Sunny Isles Beach - Every community has an event that is so successful, people look forward to it each year. In Sunny Isles Beach, it’s the Jazz Fest - and this year - the 10th annual event is on Saturday, Nov. 18, promises to be the best yet. When South Floridians head to Gateway Park (151 Sunny Isles Blvd.) from 7-10 p.m., they will be treated to an evening, featuring The Spinners, Cornell Gunter’s Coasters - featuring Edwin Cook and Lourdes Valentin. “We are looking forward to this event so much,” Aventura resident Kayla Price explained. “I went last year, and when we found out who was appearing, we cleared the schedule, right before Thanksgiving.” Through the years, The Spinners have gained popularity with millions of fans worldwide. The rhythm and blues vocal group that formed in Detroit,
Michigan, in 1954, enjoyed a string of hit singles and albums during the 1960s and 1970s. While they had some success in the early years, it wasn’t until the 1970s, where the hits started to come in - and they truly did. Hits such as: “One of a Kind (Love Affair),” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love”, “They Just Can’t Stop It (The Games People Play),” “The Rubberband Man” and a collaboration with Dionne Warwick, “Then Came You,” certainly put a stamp on a Hall of Fame Career. Most often thought of as a Motown recording act, the classic group sound of legendary R& B recording artists, The Spinners, has never lost its universal appeal. Throughout the years they have sold millions of records and topped both the Pop and R&B charts with smash hits like “I’ll Be Around” and “Then Came You.” Today, original member Henry Fambrough is joined onstage by lead singer Charlton Washington, high tenor
Marvin Taylor, tenor Ronnie Moss, and bass singer Jessie Peck; a soul-infused 5-piece band, led by Keith Ferguson, backs them up. The Spinners have six Grammy nominations and have performed twice during the awards ceremony. Inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999, they have also been awarded the Rhythm and Blues Foundation Award for their contribution to the genre. The group has performed for presidents, received a star on the Hollywood “Walk of Fame,” and has appeared in numerous network and cable television specials paying tribute to the music of the 70’s. “When we were kids, we would listen to those songs on the way to school,” said Ricky Glazer of Aventura. “We have relatives who are coming in for Thanksgiving and will be here for the event. I am excited.” Among those who made the group so impressive through the
years include: Pervis Jackson, Billy Henderson, C. P. Spencer, James Edwards, Bobby Smith, George Dixon, Edgar “Chico” Edwards, G. C. Cameron, Philippé Wynne, John Edwards, Frank Washington and Harold “Spike” Bonhart. The second act features R&B/rock and roll vocal group, Cornell Gunter’s Coasters featuring Edwin Cook. Joining Cornell Gunter’s COASTERS in 1982, Edwin Cook has enjoyed performances all over the United States, Asia and Europe. The Coasters, the original group, were the first inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and were known as The Clown Princes of Rock & Roll. A performer well-known to locals, opening act, Lourdes Valentin, was born in the Bronx, New York to Puerto Rican parents. Her training in classical,
jazz, pop and musical theater gives her a unique perspective which she brings to every performance. Her spirit shines through in her music. Tickets for this year’s Jazz

Levitis insists that there are an abundance of cases that go unnoticed. “I’ve been working with a lot of Condo Associations in Aventura and in Hollywood,” Levitis notes. “A lot of them had their roofs torn off back in 2005 during Hurricane Wilma and they weren’t compensated for it. For the first 65 years of her life, Verona Hibbert had no problems with her vision. However, through the years, she progressively needed stronger and stronger glasses. She lived a normal life, went to college in England and just did what most of us do. Then, a little over three years ago, her optometrist told the longtime nurse that she was developing cataracts - and it was not getting better. It was actually going to get in the way of her doing a job that has consumed her life. One that she loved and had a passion for. “I remember the day he told me about my vision, and because I was a diabetic, the cataracts were developing at a faster pace,” Hibbert recalled. “That is when I needed to make something happen. It really was not even an option. I had to get this corrected.” Because she is a nurse and her vision is indeed paramount to the very patients she cares for, Hibbert immediately started to ask around and see who would be the right doctor to get her vision back again. So, from a person who was always told that she had healthy eyes and outstanding vision, the Miami Gardens resident was faced with that important decision, but she was ready. “I asked around, and someone told me that Dr. (Stanley) Braverman was the ‘man’ when it came to these surgeries,” Hibbert explained. “From the first time I met him and his staff, it was a perfect fit. Every-thing I had heard about the entire office was right on target.” Because Hibbert has worked with so many medical professionals in her job, she knew immediately that Dr. Braverman was what she needed to get her vision back. What Are Cataracts? A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a
cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range. Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. CITY NEWS Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom
Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands. At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things. Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raised her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who
said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned. When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning. I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida. What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed! Although, I had resisted going through

an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match. Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry. Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare
workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete pre-employment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem, question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer
According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle. Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage. Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.
“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.” Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process. “I have already witnessed many suc-
cess stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds. “I wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr. Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Feeling stressed? Have some salt (BPT) - Stress. No one wants it, but we all experience it from time to time. Higher levels of stress can cause problems at work and at home. But stress is not just hard on your mental well-being; it is also

hard on your body and can lead to many negative health outcomes. Stress levels can also increase significantly when economic times are tough. In England, the British Health and Social Care Information Centre found that stress had increased by 47 percent during that country’s recession and that stress was the single biggest cause of sickness in the UK, affecting 20 percent of the population. Professor Cary Cooper of Lancaster University, an expert on stress, was alarmed and told The Independent, “I have never seen figures like this before. Stress is a trigger mechanism for a whole range of conditions, from heart attacks to immune system disorders, mental illness and depression and anxiety.” Everyone is familiar with comfort foods, but the key comfort foods that have been shown to actually reduce stress all contain salt. Stress is characterized in the human body by high levels of the hormone cortisol, referred to as the “stress hormone.” Scientific research has
shown, in animals and in humans, that increased levels of salt consumption are effective in reducing levels of cortisol. Research from the University of Haifa, published in the science jour-
nal Appetite, confirmed the relationship between salt and stress in humans. Researchers found an inverse correlation between salt and depression/stress, especially in women. Craving salty foods may very well be a biological defense mechanism we evolved to cope with daily stress.
The researchers reviewed data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) using 10,000 individuals and demonstrated that depression and stress were higher in individuals who consumed less salt, a trend more prevalent in women than men. They noted that the relationship of higher depression with lower salt intake in humans was consistent with the results of other animal studies. They also found that young people, up to the age of 19, selectively choose foods that are higher in salt, indicating a natural feedback mechanism driving them to consume higher salt foods and rewarding them with more vigorous growth. Other good stressrelieving tips include getting a good night’s sleep and taking time off to
focus on relaxation and regular exercise, which has added health benefits. Of course, with exercise, another benefit of salt becomes apparent, as this vital nutrient is necessary to remain properly hydrated and healthy. When you sweat, you lose
not just water but also electrolytes (including sodium) which need to be replenished. The fact remains that whether they are called comfort foods or mood stabilizers, research indicates salty foods are effective at making us feel bet-
ter and reducing our heightened stress levels, a common condition in today’s ever-changing world. So, the next time you finish a stressful day and want to wind down and relax, don’t be surprised if you instinctively reach for a salty snack.
