Navy, Light Blue, and Grey with the school logo embroidered on the left chest. Only school-approved uniform T-shirts can be worn on sanctioned spirit day events. Plain white T-shirts (no writing) can be worn underneath polo shirts and must be neatly tucked in. These are the only shirts

The school’s acronym has been placed on the pants for identification purposes. CITY NEWS Aventura City of Excellence School Important Dates For The New School Year Do you have a son or daughter attending the Aventura City of Excellence School? Here are some important dates and times to remember: August 15th 5-5:45pm is New Families Only Orientation - there will be a brief presentation to familiarize new entering families about ACES policies and procedures, and for you to get to know ACES administration and staff. August 15th 6pm - 7pm is the “Meet and Greet” your child’s teacher, and August 19th is the first day of school, so start preparing your child now. For kids, the start of a new school year is like New Year’s Eve: a chance to start fresh and set intentions for the year ahead. It’s a time to reboot, make new friends, get new clothes and gear, and find new opportunities to fuel their passions. As parents, you can help your children have a Happy School Year by encouraging them to set and accomplish their goals or school year’s resolutions, including their summer reading. School Year’s Resolutions Whether they want to join a club, improve their math skills, or just make the bus on time every day, here are some resources and tips to help your kids achieve their goals this year.

1) Record school year’s resolutions. Take the time to sit down and chat with your children about what they hope to accomplish in the new year and how they envision getting there. This is a great way for you to learn more about your kids’ dreams - the answer may surprise you! Plus, it’s even a great time for you to make school year’s resolutions. A new school year represents a fresh start for parents too. By setting goals with your child, you can lead by example and bond over the journey of seeing your goals through. 2) Celebrate school year’s eve. Help your child avoid a case of the “Sunday scaries” before the first day of school by hosting a School Year’s Eve Party! Make the new school year something that is fun and celebrated, not feared and dreaded. Include festive decorations and party props, create a Happy School Year music playlist, and serve your
kid’s favorite foods and treats. There are a lot of sweet school-themed snacks you can make too. Grab some fun cookie
cutters or check out Pinterest for tips on how to use what you already have in your kitchen to make fun treats. 3) Get organized. New school year, new schedule. Develop a system to keep yourself and your family organized, ensuring resolutions don’t fall by the wayside. Create a “Wish List” to keep track of supplies needed that aren’t on the schools suggested items list for the year, a personalized planner to track projects and activities, and sticky notes to keep everyone posted (literally) on family whereabouts. To help your family track progress, you can even create and decorate a family “Happy School Year” cork board. 4) Stock up for success. Every new school year comes with classroom supply lists and new wardrobe needs. THE LATIN HIT MAKER From Cuban Refugee to World-Renowned Songwriter Rudy Perez is one of the most iconic names in Latin music. He has written over 300 #1 or Top 10 songs, and has written/ produced for Beyonce, Julio Iglesias, Christina Aguilera, Natalie Cole, Michael Bolton, Luis Miguel, Jose Feliciano, Marc Anthony, Jon Secada, Cyndi Lauper, and dozens more. Billboard Magazine named him “Producer of the Decade,” and Perez is one of the founders of the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (LARAS), The Latin Grammys as well as the co-founder of the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame. This past July, Perez told his story in a memoir: The Latin Hit Maker: My Journey from Cuban Refugee to World Renowned Record Producer and Songwriter. The book details Perez’s remarkable journey from being a young Cuban refugee to receiving over 500 Gold and Platinum album awards and earning 19 Grammy nominations, with five wins. The Latin Hit Maker begins in 1958 when Perez was born into a close-knit family in Pinar del Rio, Cuba. Perez was just seven months old when Fidel Castro swept into power and rapidly destroyed
Cuba’s democracy and prosperity. Oppression soon settled over every aspect of life in Cuba and his family endured many hardships. Yet, la Familia Perez was strong, resilient and unified. Some of Perez’s earliest childhood memories are of his family gathered together in the evening listening, singing and dancing to songs on the radio. And church was where the three great loves of Perez’s life merged – family, faith and music. Readers follow as Perez and his family were able to get on a ‘Freedom Flight’ to the U.S. when his father, who was in jail as a political prisoner, was on a temporary leave from prison. Perez’s start in the land of plenty and opportunity wasn’t easy. He endured daily taunts by bullies from his
very first day of elementary school until he dropped out of high school after the 11th grade. As a teen, Perez and his fellow Cuban refugees were threatened and coerced into joining a violent and criminal gang which landed Perez in a state school for juveniles. Upon Perez’s release, he made a promise to God to never return to a life of crime. Focusing on music instead, before long he received his first big break when he became the lead vocalist and guitarist for a Miami-based band. Perez’s personal and professional journeys have been filled with low valleys and high peaks. As he puts it, he was a ‘ten-year overnight success’. Perez recalls painful moments from his past, including being the victim of sexual assault as a child, succumbing to the temptation of drugs and early in his career being deceived by shady characters in the music industry. After signing one of his first contracts, he was stunned to see
his photo on the album cover with the name, David Bass, under it. The record executives had changed his name! But, with his strong faith in God and the ‘miraculous measure of drive and ambition’ instilled in him by his parents, Perez went on to marry, become a father and achieve fulfillment and success in an unparalleled music career. From recording his first Spanish album, Rudy, in 1983 with RCA Records to working with just about every notable singer, producer and music industry giant, Perez will say he has and continues to be deeply blessed. He can even thank Julio Iglesias, whom he considers his musical father, for not giving him a Rolls Royce! “To sum up my sixty years, I have to say that the only way a Cuban boy who came to America with one set of clothes could become an internationally known music composer and producer, working at the level I have been allowed to create at all these years, with the incredible artists I have been blessed to know as friends, is by the grace of God,” Perez states. 5 Tips To Live A Simpler Life Millennials have been coined “the burnout generation.” Culture observers attribute the burnout to work, social, financial, and technological pressures that can leave a young adult overwhelmed and their coping mechanisms frazzled. With so much life yet to live, what can millennials do to reverse or avoid burnout? Further, how can subsequent generations handle the pressures that consume millennials? Simple life and self-help guru Gary Collins says it comes down to simplifying their lives. “Burnout is an undeniable fact among many millennials,” says Collins, author of The Simple Life Guide To Decluttering Your Life (www.thesimplelife now.com). “They’re feeling the effects of complicated living. It’s no secret today that we’re bombarded by outside stressors that are unfamiliar to earlier generations of humans, and we’re struggling to deal with them. “Decluttering is a popular concept today in terms of organizing your closet, garage, etc., but it’s also an effective mindset for simplifying your life. It’s about removing the unnecessary internal and external stressors in order to live the life you want.” Collins offers five principles for decluttering your life or living a simple life from the outset of adulthood: Knowledge is power. People tend toward the quick fix in today’s fast-moving world, but Collins says it takes time to acquire the correct, in-depth information that helps someone make lasting, positive changes.
“New habits are most effective when you know why you’re doing them,” Collins says. “Otherwise, you’re likely to be swayed by the next fad product
that promotes the easy life but does not work longterm.” Avoid extremes. People can be drawn to selling pitches such as, “Make millions in just a few hours per week,” but extreme claims rarely pan out. “A slow-and-steady approach with a wellthought-out plan that’s followed day-after-day delivers true change for the positive,” Collins says. Keep it simple. “As a culture,” Collins says, “we’ve turned the concept of living a healthy, happy life into a confusing and overwhelming selection of products and gimmicks. But less is more. We love to overthink everything and make living the life we want far more complicated than it needs to be. Once you cut out the noise and clutter, everything comes into focus.” Something is better than nothing. While overhauling an entire lifestyle can seem daunting, little changes and choices can add up. Examples are analyzing spending habits when short on money each month, or developing skills to find a job you enjoy rather than staying in a job you don’t like. “When it comes to doing nothing versus doing at least something, some-
