Saturday morning. 10:30. Yonit Bloom dons her latest bathing suit and saunters through Hidden Bay Condo’s lobby like a fashion model with her mom, Liz, for the short stroll to the SplashPad at Founder’s Park. It’s a refreshing way to start the weekend. “With the weather so hot, it’s been more SplashPad than anything else at the park,” says Liz Bloom. “Yonit sees her friends from school in the toddler area and even though

Yonit knows how to swim now, I think the water pad is safer than the pool. She comes back exhausted, ready for lunch and a nap.” With five primo parks, including a dog park, within the City of Aventura’s three mile radius, there’s some park that’s within walking distance of your condo, with activities for children of all ages. The parks are open from 8 AM until sundown, seven days a week. South Aventura is served by Veterans Park on 31st Avenue, a

two-acre park featuring a restroom, covered playground and soccer net. Waterways Park serves North Aventura with seven sprawling acres. With parking for 85 vehicles, it features a covered playground, shaded picnic tables, an exercise path with fitness stations, an outdoor basketball court, a lighted, multipurpose athletic field, and restrooms. South Florida has been a hotbed for fraud for years, whether it’s Medicare fraud or identity theft. On Monday, July 30, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20) hosted a senior fraud prevention seminar at Vi at Aventura with representatives from Senior Medicare Patrol and the Aventura Police Department. The safety fair educated seniors on prevention methods and informed them of proactive measures they can take to protect themselves. “These fraud prevention seminars are so important for our seniors,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “I want to ensure seniors have the information they need to protect themselves from potential scams. According to the FBI, older Americans are less likely to report a fraud because they

don’t know who to report it to, or don’t even know they have been scammed. Each and every one of us must arm ourselves with knowledge and awareness so that we can do everything we can to protect ourselves.” During the seminar, Rep. Wasserman Schultz mentioned legislation she introduced to address the growing problem of tax return identity theft. The Stopping Tax Offenders and Prosecuting Identity Theft Act (H.R. 4362) increases penalties for tax return identity thieves to help deter this type of crime and protect victims. She is also a cosponsor of legislation to remove social security numbers from Medicare cards in an effort to help protect the 872,000 South Floridians who have Medicare.

Did you know that 30 percent of American households have no form of life insurance whatsoever, leaving millions to struggle to cover day-to-day expenses if a main breadwinner were to pass away? That’s according to a study by LIMRA, a worldwide association of insurance and financial services companies. Even if you already have life insurance, financial and insurance professionals recommend that you review your policy periodically to make sure you and your loved ones are properly covered. “As you go through life changes, your life insurance policy should change as well to reflect those changes,” says Mike Plazony, senior vice president of the Life division at Erie Insurance. “The amount of life insurance you need really depends on where you are in your life and your individual circumstances.” Plazony lists eight specific circumstances that should prompt a policy review. 1. When wedding bells ring: Anyone getting married should also say “I do” to life insurance. Congratulations! In addition to taking out a homeowner’s policy, you’ll also want to take out a term life insurance policy. T w o things in life this s e e m absolutely incomprehensible to me. One is that I have run at least 6,000 miles on Country Club Drive around Turnberry Golf Course on the Don Soffer Exercise Trail from 1998 to 2008. The other is that I turn 50 next year and finally broke down, literally, a few months ago. I went to the doctor and got my first cortisone injections last week: two shots in my left knee. I also have orders for an X-ray. Yeah, I suppose I asked for this misery somewhere after my first 1,000 miles around “the circle.” It’s my unbridled zeal for being outside, in the sunshine, and the fact that I am addicted to running around in a circle on what may be the safest and most pleasant track in the entire world, that has led to my limp spirit. 6,000 miles may actually be an understatement. Let’s see….that’s at least three miles a day. Five days a week. 40 weeks a year actually seems low. That’s 6,000 miles in 10 years. Minimum. For several years I kept an anal-retentive calendar

of exactly how far I ran, exactly how long it took, the weather conditions, and which sneakers I wore. I’ve run in pleasant temperatures. I’ve run in the rain. I’ve run in the heat with an ice pack crammed inside my sports bra. I guess I’ve run my middleaged self into the ground. On some humid days, I walked more than I ran. And yes, I believe that toenails are for sissies. I’ve lost my fair share. They always grew back. I ran at least 2,000 of those miles with my best friend. Her name is Lady. Lady thinks running around the circle is her job. She’s what you call a working dog, a border collie and shepherd mix, and while Aventura doesn’t have sheep for her to herd, it does have ducks. One of the greatest joys of my life has been running around the circle, chasing ducks, with Lady. I am sure that, on the day I die, the memory of running with Lady will flash before me. Granted, we do look a little silly, but it is just so much fun. Lady knows where the ducks are on the circle. She puts her head down and plows through very seriously, nudging them back onto the golf course. Sometimes she runs through them authoritatively, ducks quickly

scattering in our wake. Neither the dog nor I are right in the head if we don’t run every day. Unfortunately, with an ailing knee and summer heat, we’ve reluctantly abandoned our ritual. In the meantime, I’m a bit perplexed wondering what those ducks are doing for guidance, without Lady’s leadership. The circle is open 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week. It has lots of water, police call boxes, and others of my tribe with whom I identify: the people who sweat buckets. The companionship of total strangers is one of the circle’s most endearing elements. Children of all ages in Aventura are seen chasing their tails, with or without a dog, running around the circle. You’ll see rollerbladers, walkers, wheelchair athletes, par-

She brings her dog, Simon, a Boston Bull Terrier, to Waterways Dog Park about once a week, after she gets off work in the evening. “Simon was bit by a Rottweiler once, but it wasn’t a big deal and the people working at the park

do look out for you. There’s an occasional grumpy dog, but Simon loves it.” Under the shade of a tree, she relaxes on a bench with a book or her iPad as Simon curiously sniffs other canines in what Beatriz considers a clean and well-supervised park. While Beatriz enjoys her solitude, she notices many dog owners who chat and socialize not only at the dog park, but at Aventura’s many restaurants that welcome dogs. It’s all part of living in Aventura, the selfproclaimed city of excellence, which does provide wonderful options for an active lifestyle,

A Woman’s ‘Rare’ Journey: life with an uncommon disease (ARA) - Everyone has a rare quality or a characteristic that sets him or her apart from others - a special talent, a unique interest or, for some, a rare disease. A disease is considered ‘rare’ if it affects fewer than 200,000 people in the United States. There are 7,000 known rare diseases affecting 30 million people, or one in 10, Americans. For comparison, one common disease, diabetes, affects more than 25 million Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

People with the disease can get repeated swelling attacks anywhere in the body, including their arms, legs, hands, feet, stomach, genitals, face or throat. attacks can be HAE unpredictable, painful, debilitating and disfiguring. This often makes everyday activities like walking, driving or even fastening a button difficult, or even impossible. She wanted to fit in and be “normal,” so she hid her HAE from her friends and classmates. But during her senior year of high school, Williams’ perspective on having a rare disease changed. She hesitantly revealed her condition to some close friends and family, finding them to be not only understanding, but remarkably supportive. Embracing their support, she

She maintained a positive outlook and stayed involved in school and sports, including basketball and lacrosse. “My swelling attacks affect me physically, but I don’t let them stand in my way,” says Williams. “I live my life and keep up with my priorities daily, even if I’m dealing with a swelling attack.” Williams feels lucky that there are now treatment options available for HAE; 95 percent of rare diseases do not have treatments available. Since opening up about her disease, Williams has given speeches at local schools about HAE, as well as discussed her condition in her college essay. Her story was even featured in a newspaper and on a TV news segment in her hometown. She hopes that this recognition will continue to raise awareness about rare diseases like HAE, encourage tolerance for people with differences that make them rare, and improve the road to diagnosis and treatment for those dealing with a rare condition. “Hereditary angioedema has taught me to put up with hardships and continue on with my responsibilities. Health Boomers benefit from hearing aids as they stay in the workforce longer (ARA) - Let’s face it. The Great Recession put a kink in many Americans’ retirement plans. Combine that financial blow with the general uncertainty regarding Medicare and the future cost of private health insurance. As a result, more boomers are staying in the workforce longer. In fact, between 2006 and 2016 the number of older people in the workforce is expected to soar, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Workers between the ages of 55 and 64 are expected to increase by 36.5 percent; the number of workers between 65 and 74 is expected to climb by 83.4 percent, and even the number of workers who are 75 and older is expected to grow by 84.3 percent. By 2016, the BLS says, workers age 65 and over are expected to make up 6.1 percent of the total labor force - a steep jump from their 3.6 percent share in 2006. So what does this mean for individuals? It means people need to do what they can to age productively. It means they need to take charge of their health including their hearing health - so they can maximize their chances for success on the job. Along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it’s important that

boomers routinely get their hearing checked - and that they address any hearing loss so it doesn’t undermine their efforts on the job or their quality of life.
