CITY NEWS Contact Tracer: The City of North Miami, FIU and CareerSource Team Up As the number of COVID-19 cases in South Florida continues to rise – with South Florida as the current epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic – the need for contact tracers has grown as well. To help meet that need, FIU, in partnership with the City of North Miami and CareerSource, developed a free twomonth training program for North Miami residents who want to work as contact tracers. Contact tracers play a vital role in slowing down a pandemic. They identify and alert people who have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for an infectious disease such as COVID19, so they can take steps to prevent the further spread of the disease. According to a workforce estimator dashboard from George Washington University, MiamiDade County needs about 15,000 contact tracers – if not more. With Florida and other states seeing record numbers of cases and deaths and predictions of a stronger second wave in the winter, the high demand for contact tracing is expected to continue. FIU will train 60 participants during the initial training program. The eightweek program will be broken down in two

phases: In phase one, taking place from Aug. 12 to Aug. 28, participants study at their own pace. Phase two, Sept. 8 to Oct. 5, is taught by Melissa Ward-Peterson, postdoctoral associate and epidemiologist in FIU’s Community-Based Research Institute. Ward-Peterson is a recent graduate of the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work. “FIU is here for our community,” said Pablo Ortiz, vice president for regional and world locations and vice provost for the Biscayne Bay Campus. “We are leveraging our expertise to develop our workforce in a way that will have meaningful impact in the fight against COVID19. Our hope is that participants in this program will have the tools to educate people in their communities about contact tracing and preventing the spread of COVID-19. We’re proud to partner with the City of North Miami and CareerSource in this innovative endeavor.” The first phase will cover basic contact tracing skills and knowledge while preparing learners to work with remote platforms such as Zoom and Canvas. During the second phase, the training will delve further into issues that are particularly

relevant to South Florida, such as navigating cultural norms around communication and sharing personal information, as well as the importance of building rapport and trust with impacted communities. “North Miami residents seeking employment during these challenging times will now have the option to obtain a new skill set that is rapidly growing in demand nationwide,” said Theresa Therilus, North Miami city manager. “Earning a contact tracing certificate gives a competitive edge to our residents currently on the job market. The effects of COVID-19 have made this a very difficult time in our history; but I am pleased to see how our community partnerships and the innovation of our North Miami Community Planning and Development Department team are producing opportunities to boost our local economy, develop our workforce and further fight this devastating pandemic.” The City of North Miami is funding the course through the Community Development Block Grant funds (CDBGCV) obtained from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development,

derived from its CARES Act allocation. Learners who complete the program will receive a micro-credential from FIU. CareerSource will help provide job placement. Given the current global health crisis, the city recognizes the need to educate its workforce and equip residents with skills and training to meet the current demand in the job market. “COVID-19 has challenged the business community in a myriad of ways; pushing us to think of innovative approaches to the many roadblocks presented with a public health issue,” said Rick Beasley, executive director of CareerSource South Florida. “Contact tracing is pivotal to getting the County back to work and sustaining the progress as we transition through the phases of our new normal. CareerSource South Florida is excited to partner with FIU and the City of North Miami to identify, train, and put residents of the city back to work in support of this effort.” Residents of North Miami can apply online to participate in the contact tracing training program, https://portal. neighborlysoftware.com/northmiami/ Participant/Login

A LOOK TO THE FUTURE The Aventura Arts & Culture Center 2021 Concert Series

While the theater lights remain dimmed due to the impact of COVID-19, The Aventura Culture Center wanted to provide an update as they look to the future. The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center continues to follow the guidance of local and state officials and remain prepared to respond and adapt to evolving directives. At this time, they do not know when the theater will be permitted to open but they are preparing for a variety of scenarios based on the evolving science and guidance of health professionals. They are preparing a reopening plan which outlines new procedures and protocols they will follow. The plan has been developed in accordance with CDC guidelines and in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, which manages the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. While the theater remains closed, they continue to look at all aspects of the customer experience with the goal of providing the best possible experience within the new guidelines that will include physical distancing, required masks or facial coverings, extensive cleaning and sanitizing. The health and wellbeing of their guests, staff, volunteers, artists, cast and crew remains their top priority. The practical considerations of the performing arts industry

are uniquely challenging. National tours are not able to rehearse or make plans to go out ‘on the road’ and physical distancing requirements limit seating capacity in ways that make it difficult to viably open the theaters. These realities have created challenges for the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and their peers. While the community may be starting to reopen slowly, it’s clear that theater venues will be among the last facilities to reopen. They continue to reschedule many of the concerts and events they had slated for the summer and the fall. With all that, The Aventura Arts & Culture Center still looks toward the the future, and are proud to announce their 2021 concert series.

Fox Vein & Laser Experts The New Normal By Dr. Susan Fox, DABVLM, D.O., RPVI, FSVM

AUGUST 2020 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 10

The world is moving forward and we are welcoming a new normal. After months of quarantine, we are excited to welcome the new normal to our office with the resumption of treating patients and doing elective procedures. We will be expanding services offered over the next month to include more cosmetic procedures as allowed. We have been in business for decades and have always maintained a high level of cleanliness. Our new normal will be the normal for most physicians, hospitals and medical offices and we are doing our best at keeping our patients and our staff safe and healthy, while opening our doors and expanding our services. We are back in the office for vein procedures, ultrasounds and consults. Gradually, we will be expanding to other cosmetic and laser procedures as allowed. These include micro-needling, laser hair removal, PRP, vivace, hydrofacials, peels, laser tattoo removal, scar removal, acne removal and more. We will also continue to offer telemedicine visits and are encouraging those who do not need to be seen in person to take advantage of these virtual consults and follow ups. Are you tired of the unsightly appearance of your varicose veins or, more importantly, want to rid yourself of them for good so that they don’t cause more health problems down the line? Whichever the reason, treating your varicose veins means getting to know the different varicose vein removal procedures at Fox Vein & Laser Experts, South Florida’s best vein removal center. Providing you relief, both physically and aesthetically, from your varicose veins, has been a passion of ours for as long as we’ve been in business. We know how important feeling and looking good is to your daily routine, which is why we have a multitude of ways to treat your leg veins once and for all. “We want to ensure that no matter your age, skin type, or

vein stripping procedures of the past.

Dr. Susan B. Fox, DO RPVI, FSVM is board certified in vascular medicine, phlebology, internal medicine and has been a vein and laser expert for decades. She and her staff are experts in Laser treatments. vascular issues, there is a way for your legs to be restored to good health,” Dr. Susan Fox says. “The reason why we have so many different varicose vein treatments is because there are so many different types of veins, and we like to treat the specific vein with the correct treatment to get you the best results. What kinds of veins do I have? First, it’s important to know whether the bluish, purplish veins that you see on your legs are in fact, varicose veins. A lot of times, people confuse the more severe varicose veins with the less obvious spider veins that are pretty common, as well. Varicose veins are large, raised, swollen blood vessels that twist and turn. They usually develop in the legs and can be seen and felt through the skin. Spider veins are smaller, red and blue vessels that are tiny superficial veins that branch on the skin like a spider’s web. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin. What most people don’t know, however, is that both spider veins and varicose veins can be connected and can cause symptoms. Varicose veins can bulge out and twist and turn on peoples’ legs. They form ropes that can often be felt and seen through clothing and cause the legs to swell and ache and become more and more discolored over time. Spider veins are the small tiny superficial veins that have been shown to cause symptoms in almost 60% of people. People deem veins as being cosmetic issues but they can cause many medically necessary symptoms such as leg pain,

heaviness, clots, aching, swelling, ulcerations and more. Even people with spider veins can have symptoms. Patients who have varicose veins almost always have spider veins. However, some people get spider veins and never have a problem with varicose veins. Now that we’ve cleared that up (pun intended) let’s take care of those legs! What are the different varicose vein treatment options available at Fox Vein & Laser Experts? VenaSeal This is a great non-surgical approach to removing your varicose veins. VenaSeal™ attempts to treat veins by fostering a clot to form. It does this with a gluelike substance that adheres to the walls of the vein. This substance is injected into the vein blocking the blood flow and shutting down this vein. It is done in the office and has minimal down time. How Does It Differ from Other Vein Treatments? VenaSeal™ differs from traditional vein treatments in the way it quickly causes occlusion within the vein. Treatments take only 20-30 minutes each. The good news is that it is quick and shuts down many veins. However, there can be some down-side and this may not be the right treatment for you. You should discuss this with your physician. Varithena™ Is a proprietary foam. For decades polidocanol (asclera) has been used as a sclerosant or solution used to irritate

the vein lining and close the veins shut. Varithena comes in a canister and is a foamed version of this solution that when injected into the vein, pushes the blood out of the way and irritates the vein lining causing it to scar down and seal shut. It causes larger superficial or perforator veins such as the saphenous veins and their branches to scar down and seal shut. There is no incision, no sutures and no down time. The vein is entered using a needle usually under ultrasound guidance. The vein gradually scars down and goes away over time. Compression Stockings In some cases, wearing compression stockings is enough to help lessen the symptoms of your varicose veins. The stockings are tight and have graduated compression over the affected areas. They are very tight in the feet and ankles and then loosen up as they get to the upper part of the leg thus encouraging blood flow towards the heart - a major factor in what causes the varicose veins to begin with! The veins will not go away with compression stockings but the legs often feel better when they are worn daily. Ambulatory Phlebectomy A surgical approach to removing larger and more troublesome twisty-turny veins, ambulatory phlebectomy is an in-office procedure that requires local anesthesia. The veins are teased out through very small holes without causing any major scarring or requiring major surgery, which is a significant advancement from the extensive

Does this surgical varicose vein removal require a lot of time to heal? Although this procedure requires small incisions in the skin, most patients return to normal activities immediately afterward without any necessary recovery time. Endovenous Laser Ablation(EVLA/EVLT) One of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a success rate of 98100 percent, endovenous laser ablation involves inserting a very thin laser fiber through the affected vein via a needle so there is normally no scar or incision and requires no sutures. Small pulses of laser light energy are delivered as the fiber is pulled through the vein under ultrasound guidance, gently heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. People can return to normal activities immediately and are encouraged to walk, stay active and wear compression hose. During the treatment process, the blood from these veins is redirected to better more competent veins and these insufficient veins become shrunken scars that fade over time. Sounds perfect? Wait, it gets better. These kinds of procedures can be done in just a 15 to 30minute window of time! As you can see, we have plenty of ways to make sure the veins in your legs are at their healthiest. With these and many more options to choose from, we encourage you to give us a call and set up a consultation to determine the best course of treatment for your varicose veins, today! CITY NEWS How To Retool Your Retirement Plan In The Midst Of COVID-19 The coronavirus pandemic has hit the economy hard throughout the country, and people who are nearing retirement or already retired are feeling the stress. “COVID-19 has caused a lot of retirees and those approaching retirement to rethink their plan for retirement,” says Dennis Notchick, a certified financial planner for Stratos Wealth Advisors (www.dn.stratoswealth advisors.com). “Falling interest rates, massive volatility in the stock market, and stifled economic growth are having a massive effect on psychology. “A plan created years ago may not be as efficient when interest rates were much higher and the economy was in better shape. Stress testing your current retirement plan adapted to the post-COVID-19 world can show if you’re positioned to weather this storm or in need of an update.

Notchick suggests the following tips to re-evaluate a retirement plan and perhaps retool it to withstand the effects of COVID-19: Take precise inventory of expenses. “Sometimes people don’t realize how much they are actually spending,” Notchick says. “When they lay it out, they’re shocked. For accurate retirement income planning you must have good data to understand where the money goes each month –everything it takes to live, plus discretionary expenses. A dollar saved is a dollar earned and is more important now than ever.” Check asset location and effects on taxes. “Tax planning in retirement is critical to understand,” Notchick says. “It’s about knowing how the different accounts are taxed in conjunction with other income streams like Social Security benefits,

rental income, pensions, etc. A savings account will be taxed differently than a Roth IRA, which will be different than a 401(k), or SEP IRA. Another important point to remember is that dividends, interest and capital gains may not be taxed equally, some can be taxed as high as your ordinary tax rate, and some may be completely tax-free. Income tax planning in retirement will expose any tax-planning missteps.” Bridge the retirement income gap. Notchick points out the need to tailor retirement plans for the inevitable costs of aging, some health-related as well. Income diversification ensures a strong, well-built plan. “If you have an income shortfall in retirement, where will that come from?” Notchick asks. “It may make sense to use a variety of income sources like dividends, capital gains and income from an annuity.”

Re-assess your risk tolerance. “Some investors may have been complacent over the past year; markets kept going up and nobody worries about markets going up.” Notchick says. “COVID-19 changed that, as not only is there more inherent risk in the stock market, but because of the zero interest-rate policy enacted by the Federal Reserve, interest-rate risk is high. When rates move back up, bond prices will go down. This has also caused more risk-taking because the interest rates are so low on bonds of all maturities, and when you take inflation into account, you are actually going backwards...” Ask these questions. “Does fear of loss or stability keep you up at night? At this stage of your life, how much risk do you need to achieve your goals? Failing to plan is planning for failure,” Notchick says. “This applies to all aspects of life,

including retirement.” “Holistic financial planning for retirement ensures all parts of the financial plan are working together – investments, taxes, estate planning, etc.,” Notchick says. “The pandemic has made the picture murky for some in retirement, but an updated retirement roadmap will allow you to get to your retirement destination with clarity.” Dennis Notchick is a certified financial planner for Stratos Wealth Advisors (www.dn.stratos wealthadvisors.com), he has been serving high net-worth families and business owners since 2008. A certified financial planner since 2010, Notchick has worked with well-respected firms on Wall Street and provides consulting on investment management, retirement planning and holistic financial planning. He’s been published or mentioned in numerous online and print financial publications, including The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, and TheStreet.

Ways to Help Transition Pets to Post-Quarantine Routines (Family Features) As Florida ease COVID-19 restrictions in many areas and people get out of the house to return to work, pets around the state and country may see their daily routines of hanging out with everyone come to an

end. Some dogs and cats handle routine changes easily. For others, a routine change at home can cause behavior issues, nervousness or separation anxiety. A Suzy survey of 5,000 U.S. pet owners found nearly 70% of respondents are

concerned their pets will have additional anxiety when they return to work. It’s important to prepare pets for changes in routine, especially those that are new to a home, for their well-being and harmony of the whole family.

Consider these post-quarantine transition tips. Make a Plan The key to any plan is making sure everyone knows what to do. This goes for veteran pet owners and the owners of more than 221,000 new pets adopted or fostered since March, according to the 24Pet ShelterWatch Report. Pet owners should agree on the plan for their pets and details should be shared with children who help with care. “Pet owners should make a plan with minimal and realistic changes to help their dogs or cats adapt to new routines,” said veterinarian Elizabeth DeLomba, MBA, senior veterinary services consultant at VetriScience Laboratories. “Start by offering your pets belongings that make them feel safe and comfortable and add small things that promote mental and physical stimulation.” Practice the New Routine Ease your pet into being alone by spending short periods of time away from him or her both in and outside the home and work your way up to hours of separation.

Use practice time to get your dog or cat used to what happens before you leave for work, comfortable with a crate or other safe space and acquainted with a new toy, treat or someone who will check on him or her during the day. Before you leave, take your pet for a walk or play at home to get energy out prior to your departure. When it is time to leave, don’t make a big deal out of leaving. Say goodbye long before you leave then leave calmly. Try a Calming Supplement The survey revealed that 65% of respondents plan to use a nutritional supplement to help their dog or cat cope with any anxiety a new routine brings. Over the counter calming supplements like VetriScience Composure chews can help pets relax during stressful times without changing their personality or energy level. Calming supplements come in bite-size chews or a liquid dosage and can help relieve stress for dogs and cats of all breeds and sizes. “Fear and anxiety disorders affect 23 million dogs in the U.S. alone,” DeLomba said. “Supple-

ments may offer a convenient approach for managing separation anxiety and other behavioral issues. The ingredients in supplements work together to make a positive impact on behavior and anxiousness, which results in a calmer, more focused pet.” Keep Them Stimulated Don’t let your dog or cat feel bored when home alone. Play music, keep a television on or use a white noise machine to create some constant sound. If your pet isn’t into watching television, keep him or her busy with a treat-dispensing toy that requires some work. Or stuff a toy with peanut butter, freeze it and give it to your dog when you leave. These ideas can help keep your pet’s mind stimulated and encourage him or her to focus on something other than being alone. Start thinking about a plan for your pet and ask your veterinarian if you have concerns about behavioral changes. Learn more and find the full survey results at vetriscience.com.

How Dental Offices Are Protecting Patients & Staff During The Pandemic It’s not exactly business as usual for the dental industry – or patients – as

“Before patients come in, they need to be asked if they’ve had COVID-19

Dr. Dorone M. Manasse, D.M.D., P.A offices reopen for routine care amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The outbreak of the virus has brought several changes, some of which may be permanent, in how dental offices protect their employees and patients. “Dentists have always prioritized safety, but now we’ve significantly ramped up our precautions and standard practices because we want both patients and workers to feel comfortable during a time of great uncertainty,” says Dr. Kyle Bogan, a general dentist and speaker on workplace culture.

The asymptomatic carrier of COVID-19 limits the effectiveness of prescreening patients for the virus, but patients should be asked a range of relevant pre-visit questions on the phone. “It forces dental staff to treat every patient as if they have the virus,” Dr. Bogan says.

• Upon arrival, a new look. Dr. Bogan says that staff can allay patients’ fears by informing them of all the new safety procedures their office is taking. The visit will look and feel much different from the moment they arrive. The office should be devoid of the usual magazines and toys, and hand sanitizer should be available.” • Helping fearful employees. It’s understandable if oral care workers are hesitant to return, and Dr. Bogan says it’s important to engage them in dialogue about their concerns. “The person may be worried about contracting the virus from a patient or co-worker,” he says. “They may be highrisk or have someone at home who is. Ask them what you could do to alleviate concerns, and make sure your office is following the CDC and ADA recommendations and requirements. • Aerosols and protection. Most dental procedures create aerosols –

• Diligent hygiene and cleaning. “Dentists and hygienists should adhere strictly to hand

hygiene measures,” Dr. Bogan says, “including before and after contact with patients, after contact with contaminated surfaces or equipment, and after removing PPE. Disposable gowns should be discarded in a dedicated waste container after use. Cloth isolation gowns should be laundered after each use. The staff will thoroughly clean patient treatment areas between appointments with disinfectants.” “It’s important for people to get back to the dentist for routine treatment,” Dr. Bogan says. “The virus can give some people a reason to stay away, so it’s critical for everyone to do all the right things to mitigate risk.”

So if you have been putting off your dental visit give local dentist Dr. Dorone M. Manasse, D.M.D., P.A in Hallandale Beach a call, they are open, and your safety is their highest priority. Call today to schedule an appointment, 954-925-5153.

Dr. Bogan points out some concerns of patients and dental staffs and new protocols being implemented as offices reopen:

symptoms and, if so, if they’ve been tested.”

sprays of saliva or blood from a patient’s mouth splashing into the air. Given the possibility of the virus being included in those particles, the attending staff around the patient should wear more personal protective equipment, and environmental upgrades also are advisable. “The ADA recommends face shields, N95 and KN95 masks, goggles and disposable gowns,” Dr. Bogan says.
