Aventura Waterways Afterschool Program The afterschool program provides Aventura Waterways K-8 Center students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade with academic assistance including homework, guidance in specific areas of study, and the opportunity to engage in fun cross-curricular games at the Aventura Community Recreation Center. Hours of Operation: After School follows the Dade County School Calendar and operates from 1:50 pm – 6 pm for Kindergarten and First grades and 3:05 pm - 6 pm for 2nd and up on days school is in session. On early release days, After School will operate from the time school is dismissed at 1:50 pm until 6 pm. Program Staff: Children’s safety is top priority; therefore all staff members are trained in the areas of child development, behavior management and participate in continued ongoing professional development regularly. In addition, all staff are required to clear a Level 2 background check and a 1:10 staff to child ratio is maintained at all times.

Enrollment Procedures: Children must be enrolled in order to participate in the After School Program. Hollywood Family, Youth & Community Enrichment Center Is Finally Here!

Parents, Families and Communities Must Play A Major Role In Raising Our Children Hollywood - On Saturday, April 6, there was reason to celebrate for Senior Pastor Dorothy Roberts, her husband Scott Roberts and the dream they have had for years. With the Inauguration of the Hollywood Family, Youth and Community Enrichment Center, more emphasis will be placed on the important roles that parents, families, and communities can and must play - in raising children. An off-shoot of Harvest Reapers Outreach Support Ministry, the new Center will encourage parents, families, and communities to become actively engaged in their public schools and become an integral part of school improvement efforts. “Our mission from the very beginning was to provide the youth and single parents with

life enrichment tools, programs and support to help them make better decisions for their lives,” Senior Pastor Dorothy Roberts explained. “The vision to help and inspire the youth and single parents to become useful to their families and community as a whole.” Located at 3911 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, FL 33021, Hollywood Family, Youth and Community Enrichment Center will work diligently with homeless youth in DJJ, correction/DJJ re-entry, family preservation, homelessness, and leadership strategy. They will also assist grief counseling and referrals for services, free eye exam and glasses, Podiatrists, free groceries, free clothes and on occasion furniture. “We must be strong, expanding, well established, and

innovative,” Pastor Roberts said. “If you’d like to focus on helping our youth to be more upstanding citizens in their/our community we must work with them and not against them. Our goal is to step up to the challenges facing our family and youth to help them to be better citizens in and around their/our community.” The Saturday event was highlighted by Pastor Dennis Totimeh, who was elated to share Christ and his love for youth. In addition, words were shared by Catline V. Sutherland, Deaconess, and Sister Bernadette, Evangelist. “We will fulfill our mission by serving as a public policy advocate and by identifying, demonstrating, and promoting effective prevention and intervention practices,” Pastor Roberts explained. “We will serve as a

source of counseling, training, data, and best practices for direct service providers seeking to offer programs that will have measurable, positive impact on youth.” Because meeting the challenge cannot be accomplished by any one person or organization working alone, a partnership is most critical and unique to be as a collaborator, connector, and convener on a statewide basis. There needs to be a vibrant public-private partnership that engages businesses, state government and communities to advance knowledge, leverage resources and maximize all of our collective impact on Hollywood’s youth. While the Hollywood Family,

Youth and Community Enrichment Center continues to gain momentum and trust throughout the community, Harvest Reapers Outreach Support Ministry’s Taking Stock in Children program is something that continues to help lowincome children succeed by providing college and vocational scholarships, volunteer mentors; student advocates/case managers, tutoring, early intervention and long-term support, high standards, parental involvement, and community support. Volunteers have tutored, mentored, assisted in the classroom, helped with fundraising and participated in developing school plans - as well as many other opportunities.

SERVICES OF A NURSE REGISTRY By Terry Adler, CEO, Always Classic Care

Thank you for your questions. These are some recent ones : I see that Always Classic Care is a Nurse Registry. Can a Nurse Registry provide home health services? Absolutely. We provide professional nurses to assess your needs and aides who are carefully screened for the home or for private duty while in the hospital. As an example, Always Classic Care was referred a case a few weeks ago. The client had recent falls and the family was asking for 24-hour assistance in the home. We interviewed the family member as to the patient’s personality, medical condition and personal needs. Learning that the patient had long term care insurance, our staff helped the family initiate insurance, and assigned an appropriate aide in record time. Our RN visited the client within 3 hours since there was a safety issue involved (usual RN visit is within 48 hours). Upon assessment, the nurse advised the client to go to the ER and reported the same to her family. The client was admitted. Her aide was able to stay with her in the hospital, assisted with her transfer home, and home care for her is now ongoing. This continuity of care is of utmost importance in situations like this. It is of tremendous benefit for the patient and provides confidence for her family, who live

out of the area and feel assured that their mom is being taken care of under supervision of a professional nurse registry with whom they can communicate. I don’t need anyone to help me with my shower or getting dressed. I also can put light meals together or pop frozen dinners or restaurant leftovers in the microwave. What I need is someone to drive me shopping, for errands and to doctor appointments. I also need someone to clean my apartment, because I can’t really do it anymore. Can you help me with this? These are considered private services. Always Classic Care can provide them for you with carefully screened people at a reasonable out-of-pocket cost. With one of the largest Jewish populations in the country, there is always an April celebration in south Florida. With the eight days of Passover, running from Friday, April 19 to Saturday evening, April 27, there are many activities and meals planned. The first Seder will be on April 19 after nightfall, and the second Seder will be on April 20 after nightfall. Passover is celebrated by eating matzah (unleaven bread) and maror (bitter herbs). For the duration of the 8 (or 7 days in Israel) of Passover, chametz (leaven) is strictly avoided.

WHAT IS PASSOVER? The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring. Passover (Pesach) commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. Some of the more serious problems suffered by patients with diabetes include foot ailments caused by poor blood circulation or diabetic neuropathy. Since the symptoms of neuropathy can be pain or numbness that interferes with being able to feel injury or the pressure of a tight shoe that can break the skin, it is really important for a person with diabetes to pay special attention to their feet. Being prone to foot ulcers and the fact that high blood sugar is a deterrent to good healing puts them in jeapordy of developing nonhealing wounds. There are several things that diabetics can do to help prevent foot problems, including careful daily foot care and inspection, regular exercise, adhering to diet and medicine schedules, seeing a podiatrist every three months, and wearing comfortable well-fitting shoes. Why diabetics need special shoes Not all diabetics need special shoes. However, many diabetics will at some point require these specially constructed

shoes as their conditions worsen or as they experience foot injuries. Common diabetic foot ailments include blisters, cuts, swollen feet, and calluses. Often, as a result of neuropathy, diabetics are not even aware that they have these foot injuries until they get an infection or until they get around to inspecting their feet. Neuropathy is caused by poor circulation, a side effect of high blood sugar. The nerves become damaged resulting in a loss of sensation in the feet. This prevents the patient from feeling painful sensations in their feet that may be caused by cuts, blisters, and calluses. 4 Tips For Creating Less Chaotic, More Productive Mornings When the alarm rings each morning, do you arise quickly, eager to take on whatever the day brings? Or do you drowsily reach for the snooze button? Your answer could be crucial because the mindset you start the day with can play a significant role in whether the rest of your day is filled with successes or setbacks. “Every time the sun rises, so do new opportunities to grow, develop and improve,” says Dr. Rob Carter III, co-author with his wife, Dr. Kirti Salwe Carter, of The Morning Mind: Use Your Brain to Master Your Day and Supercharge Your Life (www.themorningmind.co m). But to make the most of those opportunities, you may need to adjust your morning routine to better prepare your mind and body for what’s to come. “Your morning routine can be as little as 15 to 20

minutes if you like,” Carter says, “but the idea is to have time dedicated to you and habits that support you.” Carter offers these suggestions for starting the day right: Plan your day the night before. A peaceful morning can quickly turn chaotic if you don’t have things carefully planned out. “It’s not unusual for people to be heading out the door and discover they can’t find their car keys,” Carter says. A lot of morning stress can be relieved by planning your day the night before, he says, such as deciding what clothes to wear, making sure your phone is charged, and writing the next day’s todo list. Make time for yourself. If you’re married with kids, this can be a challenge. But Carter says everyone needs time for reflection,

Although those devices provide more platforms on which to read, research shows fewer teenagers read for the fun of it; to many of them, reading is a chore they must do for school. How to change that? Some educators think that, in an age with so many digital options, one old-fashioned reading practice remains vitally important to child development – parents reading aloud to their children. “The benefits of parents reading to children don’t just stop at helping children become successful readers,” says Christine Kyriakakos Martin (www.youvegotthisparenting.com), an early education expert and author of You’ve Got This! Keys To Effective Parenting For The Early Years. “When adults engage and bond with children

through stories, they not only foster their child’s interest in books, spark their curiosity and prompt their imagination, but they help increase language and literacy skills, which builds their child’s self-esteem.“ A study published in the Journal of Pediatrics found that parents reading aloud to their children helped enhance the youngster’s social-emotional development and made them less likely to develop aggressive behavior. In an earlier study, researchers discovered that reading aloud increased brain activity. Martin says there are several ways to maximize the time spent reading aloud to your child: Read one children’s book a day. Taking time to read aloud to your child each day entails one book per day. “At least one book per day produces immeasurable results in your child’s life and creates amazing memories for them,” Martin says. “If your child is resisting reading

during the day, try right before bedtime so there won’t be the option of picking a different activity.” Use supplemental activities. “To enhance your child’s interest in curling up with a good story, inject some supplemental activities into your reading experiences to make them more interactive,” Martin says. “Make it fun. You can use puppets or stuffed animals to act out the story. Another way is reading books with repetitive phrases and encouraging your child to recite the phrases with you. Find out your child’s interests and go to the library to find books on that particular topic.” Focus on how they remember details. Extending your reading experiences through activities and supplemental activities can help children remember specific details and prompt their thinking. Pay attention to what they tell you. Ask them questions about the book after you read to them, and see how they interpret

the story. Introduce new words. Focus on a couple of words each day from the story and teach your children what the words mean and how they are used in a sentence. “Sound it out for them, then have them repeat it,” Martin says. “Repetition equals learning, but again, making it fun inspires more learning. So let them draw a picture of what the word means, or have them act out the definition if possible.” Have them anticipate. What will happen next in the story? “Engaging your child in that thought process can expand their mind and keep them interested,” Martin says. “Take the opportunity to ask them what might happen next before you turn the page and resume reading.” “When adults engage with children through stories and get excited reading with them,” Martin says, “they are communicating very important messages.
