• Cardiovascular disease. Research shows that serveral types of cardiovascular disease may be linked to oral health. These include heart disease, clogged arteries, stroke and bacterial endocarditis. Some researchers believe that bacteria from gum disease can enter your bloodstream and travel through your arteries to your heart, affecting your cardiovascular system. Although periodontal disease seems to be associated with heart disease, more studies are needed before the link can be confirmed with certainty. • Pregnancy and birth. Gum disease has been linked to premature birth. Some research has shown that disease-causing organisms in a pregant woman’s mouth can wind up in the placenta or amniotic fluid, possibly causing premature birth. Unfortunately, treating periodontal disease during pregnancy may be too late, because the infection may have already spread in the woman’s body. This is why it’s vital to maintain excellent oral health before you get pregnant. • Diabetes. Diabetes increases your risk of gum disease, cavities, tooth loss, dry mouth, and a variety of oral infections. Conversly, poor oral health can make your diabetes more difficult to control. Infections may cause your blood sugar to rise and require more insulin to keep it under control. • HIV/AIDS. In some cases, one of the first signs of AIDS may appear in your mouth, with several gum infections. You may also develop persistent white spots or unusual lesions on your tongue or in your mouth. • Osteoporosis. The first stages of bone loss worsens from year to year, your dentist may be able to spot this on routine dental X-rays. If bone loss worsens from year to year, your dentist can suggest that you discuss the issue with your other health care providers. • Other conditions. Many other conditions may make their presence known in your mouth before you know anything’s wrong. These may include Sjogren’s syndrome, certain cancers, eating disorders, syphillis, gonorrhea and substance abuse. So you can see how very important regular dental visits are and how avoiding the dentist can have severely adverse

effects on your overall health. The truth is that the bacteria in the mouth replicate and double every 30 days reaching destructive levels in just 90 days-so people with gum disease can have bone loss in as little as 3 months! Research keeps finding new links between oral health and the health of your body every day. The latest study was done on pancreatic cancer. Here’s what they found: The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute found that periodontal disease was associated with an increased risk of cancer of the pancreas. The study appeared in the January 17, 2007 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Data for the new study came from the Health Professional’s Follow-Up Study, which began in 1986 and includes 51,529 U.S. men working in the health professions. Participants respond to questionnares about their health every two years. After analyzing the data, the researchers confirmed 216 cases of pancreatic cancer between 1986 and 2002; of those 67 reported periodontal disease. The results showed that, after adjusting for a smoking, diabetes, body mass index and a number of other factors, men with periodontal disease had a 63% high risk or developing pancreatic cancer compared to those reporting no periodontal disease. “Most convincing was our finding that never-smokers had a two-fold increase in risk of pancreatic cancer,” said Michaud. So that’s the latest information about your mouth!! I know time slips by and seeking a dentist often gets put off until there is a problem or pain. I just wanted to let you know - we understand and don’t lecture our patients about haveing not been in for so long. The key thing is to take care of any problems, create a great re-care system fo you and make sure you keep your teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime which will in turn keep your whole body healthier!!

(BPT) - Some rules are meant to be broken - like the one about not wearing white after Labor Day. Others should remain sacrosanct, such as the rules of good credit. Those are the kind of rules that can make life easier and happier when you follow them and help ensure your finances stay in good order, too. Unlike fashion rules, the rules of good credit are really not subject to interpretation or personal opinion. They derive from the formulae that credit bureaus and lenders use to calculate your credit score.

So what are the 10 unbreakable rules of good credit? Here they are in descending order, a la David Letterman: 10. Create a budget and stick to it. Your budget should cover everyday expenses and allow for the smart use of credit. 9. Use credit cards wisely. Smart use of revolving credit - not carrying a balance, paying the full balance immediately - is an important component of a healthy credit score. Unwise use, such as running up debt, can lower your score. And in that vein ... 8. Always pay more than the minimum balance on your credit cards. Ideally, you would pay off the entire balance right away, but if that’s not possible, pay more than the minimum - as much as you can afford. Paying only the minimum balance means it will take years - and thousands in interest charges - to pay off your debt. 7. When applying for a loan - which includes applying for new credit cards do so wisely. Comparison shop and make your applications (if you’ll be making more than one) in a short amount of time, so that those credit inquiries will only count against your credit score once. Stretching applications over time, or making too many in a short amount of time, can negatively impact your credit score. 6. Your credit utilization ratio - the amount you owe compared to the amount of credit you have available - is a key factor in determining your credit score. Avoid maxing out your credit - including credit cards or home equity lines of credit. At any given time, try to keep three quarters to two thirds of your total available

credit free for use. 5. Don’t immediately close a credit card account just because it’s paid off. Doing so can skew your credit utilization ratio. Before you close an account, be sure you understand what impact - if any - the action will have on your credit score. 4. Practice identity theft protection measures. From shredding sensitive paper documents before trashing them, to keeping your PC’s virus protection software up to date, it’s important to take steps to protect your credit from identity theft and fraud. 3. If you’re in financial trouble, don’t practice avoidance. If you can’t pay your bills, contact your creditors to work out a payment plan, but know that not making minimum payments may negatively impact your credit score. Being proactive may not solve your financial woes but it can help minimize the negative impact on your credit. 2. Keep an eye on your credit score. Maybe you’re in the habit of reviewing your credit report once a year, or only check it when you’re planning to apply for a loan, but it’s important to stay on top of your credit score all the time. Fortunately, the Internet has made it easy to monitor your credit report and score. Enrolling in membership of a product like freecreditscore.com can help you understand your credit. With enrollment, you get credit score alerts, identity protection alerts and fraud resolution support if you find an error on your credit report. And, the No. 1 rule of good credit: 1. Pay your bills on time. A consistent, long-term history of timely bill paying goes a long way toward a healthy credit score. In fact, a solid payment history can pull up your score even if there are other negatives on your credit report, such as a high ratio of credit used to credit available. Not paying your bills on time - or at all - is a surefire recipe for bad credit.

Solid retirement planning a must for Generations X and Y

benefits their parents and grandparents enjoyed like pensions and companysponsored retirement plans likely won’t be available any more. This will result in members of these generations having to rely on their own personal savings if they want to retire,” Duncan said. Only one in five Gen X and Gen Y consumers work with a financial professional, according to the LIMRA research. LIMRA also found that younger professionals with access to a retirement plan through their employment were more likely to participate in the plan if they were knowledgeable about financial products. Tom Henske, a financial professional in New York and author of a weekly news column MoneySmart Kids, believes members of both Gen X and Gen Y can take positive steps toward planning for a better financial future with a few simple steps: 1. Educate yourself with a trusted financial professional on different financial products and opportunities available to you, both via your benefits and retirement savings. 2. Understand what your work benefits can do for you, as well as areas that these benefits might not fully cover your future

(BPT) - When it comes to making plans for retirement years, today’s younger workers are struggling to make heads or tails of all the resources and products available to them through work and personal investments. Younger professionals who fit into the Gen X and Gen Y categories also are not taking advantage of financial professionals, who can provide information and education on planning for a secure retirement, according to 2013 research by LIMRA, a research, consulting and professional development organization. Such lack of financial acumen is a challenge for young adults who face a challenging job market as many continue to struggle paying back student loans and establishing both short and long term savings while balancing the needs of their growing families. Working with a trusted financial professional should be a priority for Gen X and Gen Y members, says Jeff Duncan, a financial professional with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) who concentrates his practice in planning for retirement. “As the younger generations approach retirement age, a lot of the

needs. Determine what opportunities exist to cover any gaps. Also be sure to take advantage of any “free” money offered by your employer. For example, a company may offer a 3 percent match payment to your 401(k) account if you contribute 6 percent. 3. Give yourself a good financial head start now by paying down debts and developing a long-term plan that includes emergency savings, retirement products to create additional income for when you won’t be bringing in a paycheck any longer as well as protection products like disability income insurance and life insurance. 4. Review and evaluate how well your strategy fits your current and planned future lifestyles once a year. 5. Pass on your education and lead by example. Demonstrate to your children how you take responsibility preparing for retirement. You can demonstrate this in several ways. For younger children, educate them on the importance of paying bills on time - try playing a game of pretend bank. For older children, discuss savings accounts and properly using these accounts. And for young adult children, ask them what actions they’re taking now to plan for their financial future. “Because people in Gen X and Gen Y will likely fund their retirements via savings, it’s extremely important for them to understand what actions they can take to put themselves in a better financial position, while also taking advantage of any savings tools through employment benefits and retirement savings,” says Henske.

Tips for baby boomers seeking divorce The 25-year itch may be the new 7-year itch (BPT) - Baby boomer couples that have been married 25 years or more are divorcing at record rates, according to a recent study by the National Center for Family and Marriage Research at Bowling Green University in Ohio. While overall divorce rates peaked in the 1980s at around 50 percent, divorce among baby boomer couples 50 years or older has doubled over the last 20 years. In 1990, the study noted, 1 in 10 people who divorced were 50 years or older. Today, that figure is 1 in 4. And, if you’ve been married previously, the likelihood that your second or third marriage will end in divorce is 2.5 times greater than firsttime marriages. “Because of several high-profile splits of baby boomer couples in the news recently, most people would assume that infidelity is the leading cause of divorce among older Americans,” says Don Cosley, a divorce attorney with the Cosley Law Office in Chicago. “The reality is that lack of communication is often the deal breaker. Empty nesters wake up one day and realize they have nothing in common with their spouse. That’s because they haven’t kept up the communication in their marriages.” Unlike a younger couple that divorces, when a couple that has been married for a long time breaks up, the impact can be dramatic for the couple and those around them, notes Cosley. The division of assets, health care issues, handling longtime friendships with other couples, and sharing the holidays with adult children are just some of the issues that come up in the dissolution of a long-time marriage.

If you’re over 50 and considering filing for divorce, or if you’re in the middle of a divorce, here are some tips from FindLaw.com, the nation’s leading website for free legal information: • Prepare financially: Legal fees alone can range from several hundred dollars to tens of thousands, depending upon how long you’ve been married, child

custody and the size of the estate that needs to be divided. The cost alone of establishing a new household can double expenses overnight. If you foresee divorce in your future, it’s important to save to prepare for a new transition. Women should especially be concerned. According to the National Center of Health Statistics, it’s not uncommon for women to experience a 45 percent post-divorce drop in their standard of living. • Seek professional help: Couples divorcing may just want to rip off the bandage and sever all ties as quickly as possible. However, immediately cashing out stock and bond investments, IRA accounts and selling your home or vacation property can cost both parties thousands in capital gains taxes. Consider consulting a certified divorce financial analyst to assist you in making wise decisions in separating assets, in conjunction with your divorce attorney. • Retirement and Social Security: Couples that are retired and living off retirement assets face other complexities. A Qualified Domestic Relations Order, which is a separate court order determining the division of retirement assets, may be required. Older couples also need to face questions about survivor benefits if the other spouse dies. They should review special rules regarding Social Security benefits, such as entitlement to survivor benefits for couples that have been married for more than 10 years and are older than 62. • Be cautious with social media: According to the American

Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, 81 percent of U.S. divorce attorneys say they’ve seen a dramatic rise in the number of divorce cases involving social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Family law attorneys warn baby boomers that some of these websites can be potential problem spots. Posts on social media sites are frequently being entered into evidence in divorce cases to document infidelities or spousal neglect.• Consider your pets: You may think of your pets as if they were your own children, but the courts look at a pet as property. Because pet custody cases have increased dramatically over the past several years, divorce attorneys say if you want to avoid a judge making a decision about who gets the pet, it’s best if the couple decides between themselves. Consider ownership, visitation rights and how veterinary bills will get divided. Otherwise, judges are most likely to award pets to the spouse who gets primary custody of the children. • Health care insurance: One of the most complex aspects of divorce among older couples is health care insurance. In cases where one spouse is dependent on the other for health care insurance, some couples separate but do not go through with divorce because of the enormous costs of insurance, especially if one of the partners is suffering from a health issue such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s diseases. Many insurance companies have strict rules related to divorce, so check your policies and consult an attorney.

inspire. Start by learning your personal wedding style - are you modern, vintage or offbeat? Then jump into learning about color schemes, fashion, honeymoons and more. MyWedding.com is a helpful resource also, with a variety of planning tools, insightful guides and the opportunity for couples to create a free website about their wedding. Want to know some of the top bridal trends of 2013? From color to cake, brides today are thinking outside the box. Here are some top trends to consider: Color: When it comes to colors there’s no need to be coy - top trends of 2013 are bright and bold. From ruby reds, rich blues, vivid violets and sunshine yellows, splashes of color liven up your decor and create a memorable atmosphere. It’s easy to seamlessly incorporate a fun color without going over the top when you rent - consider renting runners, centerpieces and even stemware in the color of

your choice. Dessert: While traditional brides may prefer a multilayered wedding cake, many others are taking a fun approach to desserts. Do you and your honey love apple pie? Place homemade apple pies on each table. Have your first date at an ice cream parlor? Set up an ice cream bar with a variety of toppings for guests to create their own sundae. You can rent all the extras to create an authentic ice cream shop atmosphere.

Go virtual: It’s unlikely that every guest you invite will be able to attend, so now technology is bringing people closer together no matter where they reside. Couples with guests who live far away or family who aren’t able to attend are now sharing their special day by livestreaming the ceremony and reception. Guests can then attend the wedding virtually. Bouquets: Flowers are beautiful, but creative brides are taking a fresh look at traditional bou-

quets. Adorn your blooms with gems or feathers for a stunning accent as you walk down the aisle. Or, skip flowers altogether and create a family heirloom gather vintage brooches from friends and family and make a sparkling jewelry bouquet with supplies from your local craft store. Whatever trends you decide to incorporate into your big day, renting your dream wedding supplies rather than buying is a wise decision. You’ll get the latest trends at an affordable price.

‘Til death do us part, but how do you handle ‘in sickness and in health’? Survey highlights gender differences in long-term care perceptions

The Aventura Foreign Film Series Concludes This April With A Screening Of Le Harve

APRIL • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 16

Aventura – The Aventura Foreign Film Series concludes with Le Harve on Tuesday, April 16 at 7 p.m. at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. In this warmhearted portrait of the French harbor city that gives the film its name, fate throws young African boy Idrissa together with Marcel Marx, a wellspoken bohemian who works as a shoe shiner. When the boy arrives by cargo ship, the aging shoe shiner takes pity on him and welcomes Idrissa into his home. There, a journey of surprise awaits them both. Award-winning and internationally renowned director Aki Kaurismäki created a beautifully realized fable-like story with Le Harve, which is presented in French with English subtitles and hosted by Shelly Isaacs, who will introduce the film and host a post-screening discussion. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times wrote, “Buster Keaton isn’t dead, he’s alive and well in Finland, where under a new identity he pursues his own particular brand of deadpan absurdism to wonderful effect. If the name Aki Kaurismäki doesn’t mean anything to you, it should, and Le Havre may be the film to make it happen.” The Broward Center for the Performing Arts manages the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, a 14,864-square-foot, 326-seat waterfront complex that hosts performing arts, cultural and educational programming for all ages. The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center is located at 3385 N.E. 188 Street in Aventura and on Twitter @AventuraCenter. Tickets are $10. (BPT) - Apparently “in sickness and in health” can mean different things to men and women. As the population ages and the need for extended health care increases, a recent nationwide omnibus survey of 1,005 American adults shows that men and women approach the issue of long-term care planning and insurance from different perspectives. Those differences, according to the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans survey, could have a significant impact on their retirement years - and their family relationships. Men vs. women With women living longer than men, there should be some concern about who will actually foot the bill of the costs should a woman require longterm care. With married couples, the woman is more likely to need long-term care - she will likely care for her husband during his final days, and then may rely on long-term care herself since she is likely to outlive him.

Despite that, according to Thrivent Financial’s survey, males seem more versed in the topic of long-term care insurance than females. The survey indicated that men are more likely than women to own or plan to buy long-term care insurance. For example: • 12 percent of females surveyed currently own long-term care insurance. • 19 percent of males surveyed currently own long-term care insurance. • 60 percent of females don’t intend to buy long-term care insurance in the future. • 53 percent of men don’t intend to buy long-term care insurance in the future. • 27 percent of both men and women surveyed plan to purchase long-term care insurance in the future. In short, men seem to be coming around to the necessity of preparing for long-term care, while women appear to be slower to acknowledge the need. The sandwich generation issue: stuck in the middle but continuing to work? When it comes to providing care, the

differences between the sexes continue. When asked how they would care for both their children and one or both of their parents or another loved one at the same time, male and female respondents had differing opinions. • Twenty-six percent of women reported they would quit their job to be the primary caregiver for a loved one should the need arise. • Only 14 percent of men said they would consider that option. • Thirty-three percent of men said they would rely on the savings and assets of those needing care and continue working. • Only 21 percent of women would rely on the savings and assets of those needing care and continue working. And what will you do in retirement? Long-term care in retirement is an important issue facing both men and women but it is often overlooked during the retirement planning process. According to Thrivent Financial’s survey: • Only 10 percent of women considered the possibility of caring for someone else while retired. • Only 6 percent of men considered the possibility of caring for someone else while retired. In contrast, 43 percent of women

and 41 percent of men plan to retire fully and devote their time to travel, philanthropy and/or hobbies. Unfortunately, many don’t stop to consider the impact to those plans should the need for extended care arise. What will be given up to pay the expenses? Are family members trained to provide the type of needed health care? Who is willing to alter plans when push comes to shove? “The disconnect between our expectations for a long, healthy and independent life and the reality of the chances of needing long-term care is staggering,” says Dean Anderson, product leader at Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. “Planning ahead is critical for both men and women, given the potential the consequences to the emotional, physical and financial wellbeing of your family.” The moral of the story Taking the time to discuss priorities and plans when it comes to future care needs can help alleviate worry and stress in relationships - and ensure that expectations are appropriately set and finances allocated. Women should be especially sure to consider all the benefits that long-term care insurance brings. For more information about long-term care, visit www.thrivent.com /insurance.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 - April 19) The first part of 2013 has been, so far, highly unusual in that the planets seem to have a movable party, moving like a group of drunk little planets from one house to another, unwilling to go home. Apparently they like to be together! They started out in January in Capricorn, headed to Pisces in a big way in March, and now there will be a remarkable FIVE in Aries as of the new moon. You’ve been trying to gain control of things, but doing so in March proved difficult. Now, in April you get your chance.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) Your friends will have an enormously positive influence on the course of events that you will be drawn into this month, especially in the first three weeks of April. At that time, you will have a remarkable FIVE heavenly bodies in Aries - half the solar system - that will fill your eleventh house of friendship, hopes, and wishes. You might say, well, my friends are always on my mind, and they always have a big role in my life! Yes, that might be true, but not on the scale I see coming for you, dear Gemini. This is special!

TAURUS (April 20- May 20) The big news this month is that we are back in eclipse season, and this season will be bigger than most. Usually, we see two eclipses coming at one time, two weeks apart from the other. Not now, for when one family of eclipses is about to end and a new series is just starting up, like now, you see three sets, all two weeks apart. All eclipses coincide with new moons and full moons, and multiply their power and might by at least a factor of three.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22) You have just arrived at your most important month of 2013 for professional progress and affairs, and if you play your cards right, you should see a major breakthrough in the weeks ahead. Top-level positions are hard to get, as is new business, but if you begin interviewing or pitching now, you have the best new moon of the year to help you. Along with the new moon in Aries will come the Sun, Uranus, Mars, and Venus - all in Aries, too - to help you. All these will gather in early April to get things ready for the majestic new moon to arrive at 21 degrees Aries.

LEO (July 23- August 22) You’ve been concentrating hard at work, but you seem to be longing to do something new and different to put a little variety in your life. During the friendly first half of April, it may be time to switch up your schedule. If you want to take a vacation, see if you can take a little time to do so in early April, a great time to go, and even a business trip would have you enjoying the change of scene. If you can travel, go anytime from through April 23, and you’ll be assured a happy, joyous trip.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) Saturn has been orbiting Scorpio since October 5, 2012, so a full six months have gone by now. No doubt you are setting into new and greater life responsibilities. If you were born early in your sign, as an October Scorpio, your life has changed quite dramatically as you have begun to tackle bigger life goals. All Scorpios are about to grow in authority as you learn new life goals. Saturn teaches that nothing is given in life without a genuine commitment to hard work. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21) A joyous confluence of planetary energy in adventurous Aries will assemble in your house of true love at the start of April, quite out of the blue, and remain there several weeks. Five heavenly bodies are already in place in your fifth house of true love, including Venus (love, luxury), Mars (energy and attraction), Sun (authority, ego, and confidence), and Uranus (surprise), all awaiting the arrival of the majestic new moon in Aries, 21. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19) You are starting to see the plan of the universe, specifically that change is necessary, and often, with change comes a need for adjustment. You are one of the four cardinal signs - Aries, Libra, Cancer, and Capricorn - and as such, cardinals are quick to take a leadership role in any process of change. Cardinal signs define direction, for the cardinal signs align with north, south, east, and west points on the compass and on the globe.

VIRGO (August 23 - September 22) At the start of the month, you are intent on getting your finances in order. You have an unusual emphasis on money, and you seem more determined than ever to get a good grip on any matter at all, and you may have several on your list. You have a strong buildup of planets in Aries, in your eighth house of other people’s money now, including the Sun, new moon, Venus, Mars, and Uranus - five heavenly bodies in all.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18) After weeks of dealing with Mercury retrograde (until March 17) and many delays that were beginning to drive you a little crazy, early to mid-April will be highly productive and very much in tune with all you hope to accomplish. As the month opens, you may be busy writing, speaking, traveling, or negotiating a major contract. Many heavenly bodies, all in enterprising Aries, are now gathering in your third house of communication, including Uranus (genius, and disruption), Mars (energy and action), Venus (beautiful design, fun, and romance), and the Sun (authority and strength).

LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) Many planets are gathering in your opposite sign of Aries, and while you will cooperate closely with others to win your goal, you may have to make a few compromises along the way. Yet who is better to do that than a Libra? You practically invented the art of negotiation, dear Libra. There is absolutely no doubt that a partner romantic or in the business sense - will be important to you this month. This person may be your spouse, or a client, or a buyer or seller, or even an expert you hire, or other collaborator.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20) You are not a sign that enjoys spending a great deal of time on money management, but this month, doing so will pay off. As the most creative and imaginative sign of the zodiac, you enjoy getting involved with new projects that will allow you to direct your considerable talents, but focusing directly on money is often put aside. Money will often be a byproduct to your creative efforts, but that’s good because by focusing on the assignment, you create work of great quality, and quality is usually always rewarded in time.

HEALTH

How to host a healthier happy hour (BPT) - Going out with co-workers or friends after work is a great way to relax, but when you host a happy hour at home, you have full control over the guest list, atmosphere, music and, most importantly, the menu. Use these simple tips to entertain your friends, and your home may just become the new happy hour hot spot. Create whole-fruit drinks Entertaining at home allows you to use whole fruits and natural juices to create wholesome, yet delicious cocktails. For example, you can make a Whole Fruit Margarita using fresh oranges, lemons and limes instead of a bottled sweet and sour mix. Add the fruit, along with your favorite tequila, a few ounces of Grand Marnier or Triple Sec, water, a touch of sugar and some ice into a high-powered blender, such as the Vitamix Professional Series 300, for a

refreshing, restaurant-quality cocktail. Add the final touches by pouring the drinks into salt-rimmed glasses and toast to better-for-you margaritas. Plan a nutritious menu Plan a menu to go along with the healthy theme by creating a variety of small bites for your friends to sample. Try making soup shooters, nachos with low-fat shredded cheese and extra veggies, or a sweet and spicy Mango Salsa served with tortilla chips or crackers. With just a little creativity, it’s possible to have a fun and delicious happy hour while keeping the fare healthy. Set the mood Shake off the stress of a tough day - literally - with an energetic playlist that will have you and your guests grooving in no time. Mix up the music by plugging into a friend’s iPod, or send an invitation asking

guests to RSVP with their favorite party song selections.-In addition to mood-enhancing tunes, soft lighting is a relaxing, welcome addition to any after-work soiree, serving as a contrast to the bright, fluorescent lights found in most work spaces.Plus, the right lighting helps your guests feel less self-conscious, and free to dance their cares away. If you must go out If you’re not one for hosting and would rather spend the evening out, there are still plenty of ways to keep your choices on the right track. First, be aware of how much you’re drinking. Second, make healthy menu choices. Order a salad or lean meat like chicken satay with sauce on the side; skip the chips, pretzels and fried indulgences. Another tip is to have a glass of water between drinks. This will cut down on your alcohol intake and keep your body hydrated.

Enjoy a healthier happy hour by incorporating wholesome ingredients - and a few mood-boosting additions - into your work week. For more happy hour recipes, visit www.vitamix.com.

HEALTH A ‘not-so-rare’ story in the journey of a rare disease diagnosis (BPT) - In the year 2000, Lisa Wollman, a young, vibrant woman in the prime of her life, was pregnant with her second child, and like many expectant mothers, was experiencing changes in her mood and body. However, she knew something was not quite right. Lisa started experiencing anxiety and insomnia, which had not occurred during her first pregnancy. After visiting multiple doctors, Lisa was told her symptoms would subside post-pregnancy, however several weeks after giving birth, she began experiencing other unusual symptoms, including excessive facial hair growth, acne and depression. These signs and symptoms prompted further doctor visits ultimately leading to the diagnosis of Cushing’s disease, which affects approximately one to two people per million annually. Cushing’s disease is a rare but serious, debilitating endocrine disorder caused by the presence of a noncancerous pituitary tumor in the brain which ultimately leads to excess cortisol in the body. Cortisol is a vital hormone that regulates metabolism, maintains cardiovascular function and helps the body respond to stress. The excess cortisol circulating in the body can lead to many unwanted physical and emotional effects, including those Lisa experienced, as well as symptoms such as high blood pressure, irritability, high cholesterol, rapid uncontrollable weight gain, central obesity, a round, red full face and striae (purple stretch marks), among others. Symptoms can vary from person to person. During the journey to diagnosis for many Cushing’s

disease patients, doctors may look at, and treat, individual symptoms, resulting in a missed or delayed diagnosis of Cushing’s disease. In fact, the average time to diagnosis is six years from the time the patient first notices symptoms. In Lisa’s case, it took about eight months of proactively advocating for testing and visiting doctors before learning that she had Cushing’s disease. “Each specialist just looked into select symptoms based on their area of expertise and no one was willing to look at the full picture in order to consider a complete diagnosis,” said Lisa. “It wasn’t until I gained enough weight, lost enough sleep, and started to look like a football player that I was pushed by my father and my psychiatrist to get my own cortisol tested.” Following her diagnosis, Lisa faced the emotional effects and social stresses of having a rare disease, and felt as though she was viewed differently in both her personal and professional life. Fortunately, Lisa connected with a Cushing’s disease support group, and found comfort in sharing her personal story and learning from others with similar Cushing’s disease journeys. “When I was sick, I found that talking to other people who had been through what I went through was very, very helpful, and at times life-saving,” Lisa said. “I encourage people with Cushing’s disease to talk to each

other about their experiences, because otherwise there’s a feeling of isolation and the sense that you’re suffering alone.” In recognition of patients living with Cushing’s disease, people across the globe celebrate Cushing’s Disease Awareness Day on April 8 - the birthday of Dr. Harvey Cushing, who was the first person to describe the disease. Spreading awareness can help educate and unify the community in support of this underserved disease.

To help support Cushing’s disease patients worldwide, tell your family and friends about Cushing’s Disease Awareness Day and pass along educational resources like CushingsDisease.com. For more information about Cushing’s disease, please visit, CushingsDisease.com.

HEALTH

Knowing your health heritage: the familial link of diseases (BPT) - Family members can have many things in common, including physical characteristics and personality traits. While some traits are obvious, like having red hair or blue eyes, some shared traits are not as obvious, such as the risk for developing a common medical condition, like high cholesterol, or a rare disease. A rare disease is one that affects fewer than 200,000 people, and about 30 million Americans have one of 7,000 known rare diseases. Because about 80 percent of rare diseases are genetic in origin, knowing one’s family history is an essential part of the recognition and diagnosis of these conditions. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for family members of someone diagnosed with a rare disease to go untested, which could delay getting an accurate diagnosis and potentially appropriate medical attention. Families should keep an open line of communication about diseases that may be genetic and if appropriate, encourage their relatives to seek evaluation by a knowledgeable medical professional. Nikia, 32, who is living with a rare swelling disease called hereditary angioedema (HAE), knows firsthand the importance of familial testing. HAE is a genetic disease that affects about 6,000 people in the United States. The disease causes repeated swelling attacks that can occur anywhere in the body, including arms, legs, hands, feet, stomach, genitals, face and throat. HAE attacks can be unpredictable, painful, debilitating and disfiguring. The average HAE patient endures about 10 years of repeated misdiagnoses before the disease is accurately identified. Along with a blood testing, a comprehensive family history can help accurately diagnosis HAE. Often, people who are diagnosed with HAE report having relatives who suffered their whole lives

from severe stomach aches or unexplained episodes of swelling, or even relatives who died unexpectedly due to throat swelling, who likely had HAE but were never accurately diagnosed. Nikia was first diagnosed with HAE when she was just 5 years old, after experiencing severe swelling all over her body. Nikia’s mother had also suffered from bouts of unexplained swelling throughout her life, but because her attacks were less severe and only occurred in her feet, she never sought medical attention. It was Nikia’s cousin who eventually encouraged her mother to get tested for HAE, and three years after Nikia was diagnosed, her mother’s testing indicated that she also had HAE. Because of her cousin’s persistence, Nikia’s mother was finally able to understand the cause of her own unexplained swelling episodes and received medical attention that helped her manage her attacks. Understanding the likelihood that she could pass HAE on to her children, Nikia had both of her children evaluated for the disease. Although her daughter was not diagnosed with the condition, her son eventually was. When Nikia’s son was about 3 years old, he was frequently being sent home from school for nausea and vomiting. Nikia, who had experienced similar symptoms as a child, recognized the likelihood that it could be due to HAE. Testing confirmed that her

information she learns with her extended family and encourages members of her family to get evaluated for the condition. To date, she has prompted two cousins to undergo testing for HAE. It is her hope that her loved ones will also spread knowledge about the disease so that others may be properly diagnosed without having to endure years of untold suffering. “Even though some of my family members have been tested for HAE and the results came back negative, they are now educated about this disease and can help raise awareness among others,” says Nikia.

son did, indeed, have the disease. “When my son was diagnosed with HAE, I wasn’t afraid or sad,” says Nikia. “It gave me the spirit to further educate myself and other health care providers so that they could potentially help someone else by getting an earlier diagnosis. I learned as much as I could about the HAE landscape so that I could be the best advocate for my son. Today, Nikia dedicates much of her time to staying up to speed on new information or medical advances in HAE and spreading awareness of the disease amongst her family, friends and community. Tips for optimizing small spaces (BPT) - The trend toward smaller, more efficient homes is still in full swing, with new home builders offering floor plans that lower square footage while amping up usability. If your home is older, however, or you live in an apartment, your smaller space may just feel ... well, small. Being short on space doesn’t mean you have to be short on style or efficiency. Even older small spaces can get an open, useful feel with the right design and decorating tactics. Here are a few ways you can optimize your small space: Be size wise - Nothing makes a small room look more cramped than filling it with furnishings that are too big for the space. For example, if your living room is 10 by 12, a 9-foot-long sofa is going to dominate the room and leave little space for anything else. Conversely, placing a smaller bed (such as a twin or single) in a modestly sized bedroom is a classic trick designers and home stagers use to make a bedroom look larger. When buying furniture for your small space, keep scale in mind. Furnishings should fit the space

well, leaving plenty of area for you to move around them. Mohawk Homescapes blogger Cecilia Staniec advises homeowners take room measurements. “You should never shop for furniture without a complete set of measurements,” she writes. Open up floor space - Smart use of wall space can open up floor space, which is often at a premium in small rooms. Some items must occupy floor space, such as sofas, tables and chairs. Others - like lighting, TVs and electronic components - don’t. Wall-mounting TVs, especially flat screens, can be a great way to conserve floor space and create an appealing focal point for a petite room. Low-profile wall mounts, like Sanus’ Super Slim Full-motion VMF408, are perfect for small to medium screens of 26 to 47 inches. The mounts keep the screen close to the wall while providing a full range of motion for optimum viewing from multiple seating areas. Similarly, you can wall-mount your computer monitor - even an iPad. Work with your walls Your walls can work for you in other ways, too. Even in small

open. Avoid dark colors around windows, as darker hues absorb more natural light. Recessed lighting overhead can help a room feel loftier, and wall sconces provide illumination without occupying valuable floor space. rooms, the walls are one of the largest design elements. Choosing a bright or light wall color can help a smaller room feel more open and airy. Adding mirrors is another way to make a room appear larger. You don’t need to install a full-length mirror on one wall; a series of smaller mirrors attractively positioned in a cluster can do the job just as well without being overwhelming. Carefully consider accessories you place on the wall, and don’t overdo it. Too much on the walls will make them look cluttered and even smaller. Sometimes, one or two thoughtful graphic elements are all you need to make a design statement. Let there be light - A lack of lighting can make a small room look positively cramped. Whenever possible, enhance the size and appeal of your rooms with plenty of light. Natural light is optimum and adding a skylight or solar tube is a great way to bring sunshine into your home.

The Most Effective Guidance In This Growing Market . . . SANDI AARONSON . . . “Our Team Speaks Your Language”

(BPT) - Just 10 years ago, homebuyers would have started the purchasing process with a phone call to mortgage broker or real estate agent, a drive through a desirable neighborhood and a perusal of the classifieds. In 2013, however, buying a house is a high-tech affair, with technology making it easier than ever to find and finance the home of your dreams. In fact, nine out of 10 homebuyers use the Internet as a primary search source, and more than half (52 percent) go online first when looking for a home, according to a joint study by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and Google. If you’re in the market to buy a house this spring, here are five must-have tech tools to make the process easier: 1. Online mortgage applications and approvals - Real estate experts advise buyers to get approved for a mortgage before they begin shopping. Doing so allows buyers to move quickly when they find a home they want, and can make their offer more appealing to sellers. While many lenders allow borrowers to initiate the application process online, credit reviews and final approval, however, has continued to be done through slow, traditional methods. Now, the eighth largest mortgage company in the U.S., Guaranteed Rate, has upgraded its online services to allow buyers to apply for and get approved online - virtually instantly. Applicants can choose and customize a loan, submit an application, receive their credit scores from all three major credit bureaus, and receive an official approval letter that recognized the borrower’s ability to be financed by the company - all online. On GuaranteedRate.com, customers can choose and customize a loan, submit an application and receive an official approval letter, recognizing the ability for the borrower to be financed by Guaranteed Rate. “Despite technological advances in other aspects of the real estate industry, the mortgage application process has remained largely manual - and time intensive,” says Scott Stephen, president of Guaranteed Rate’s online division. “By automating the process, homebuyers now have access to the same tools as loan officers. The time it takes to obtain a mortgage approval has been compressed from days or even weeks to as little as 15 minutes.” Go to www.GuaranteedRate.com to learn more. 2. Mobile apps - The mobile Internet now accounts for 15 percent of global

Internet traffic, according to Business Insider. What’s more, about one-fifth of real estate related Internet searches happen on mobile devices, according to the NAR/Google study. Google real-estaterelated searches on mobile devices soared 120 percent from 2011 to 2012, the study notes. From Realtor.com (NAR’s multiple listing website) to lifestyle websites like Trulia and apps like House Hunter, homebuyers can access a wealth of real estate information, listings, news of buying trends and more via their Android-based mobile devices, iPhones and iPads. 3. Credit monitoring products While the arrival of truly automated mortgage processes may make it easier to apply, consumers still bear the responsibility of making sure their credit scores are good enough to qualify for a mortgage. Online credit monitoring products are a great tool for getting your credit score and report mortgage-worthy. All three major credit bureaus - Experian, TransUnion and Equifax -- and a host of other financial services companies offer this type of product. Many allow you to access your credit report in real time, and obtain your score. 4. Multiple listing sites - Searching home listings still remains the most common way house-hunters use the Internet to aid in their efforts. One hundred percent of the buyers studied in the NAR/ Google report used the Internet to search for homes. From national sites like Realtor.com and Zillow to to the home pages of local realtors, the interconnectivity of multiple listing services allows consumers to access a broader, more indepth database of available homes than ever before. 5. Regional/local websites - For many people, the quality of schools and security of the community are key considerations when home shopping. A plethora of websites provide buyers with ample information, including local school district websites, municipal and police department sites, local and state chambers of commerce, state education department sites, and even sites maintained by homeowners associations. “Just as the Internet has touched virtually every other aspect of our lives, technology has truly transformed how consumers find and finance their homes,” Stephen says. “From finding just the right house to ensuring they’ll be able to pay for it, technology has made it easier than ever for buyers to get in the door of their dream homes.”
