From ring to ring, you have entertained. From generation to generation, you have brought families together. You have invited us in to witness and be a part of the Greatest Show on Earth. But, you have also become one of America’s great tragedies. After nearly a century and a half in business, doing what you do best, you will vacate your place in the entertainment space. There will be other circuses. But, there will never be another Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus. You have never wavered from your roots – your history, your way of working and promoting, and your way of entertaining. Until, recently. Pressures to change practices. Pressures to change acts. Pressures to conform to current ways. Most people are unaware of the extent you cared for animals. Most are unaware of the brilliant business model to get people in the door to experience the circus and buy memorabilia and merchandise. Most are unaware that Ringling Bros. was the entry point for so many to begin their careers in show business. It was a gateway for many around the world to explore, to share culture, and to provide smiles. It was so
much to so many. In many ways, it was part of the American way. I remember the excitement when the train stopped in a city. I remember the authentic joy the clowns brought as the elephants paraded down the streets to the arena. I remember the genuine love of the circus by its performers behind the scenes and in the rings. I remember the sweat on the brow before each show and the smiles that filled the stands. So it begs the question: Why did Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey fail? Or did we fail it? I have struggled to explain how we allow our American icons to disappear. For what? Better, more wholesome family entertainment? Why did the business environment change so rapidly? Or did it? Was it lack of strategic foresight? Was it changing societal norms? Were there simply better options? Or did we take it for granted that what was once here will always be here? This was an icon that navigated the generations. It circumvented challenges over nearly 15 decades. Somehow it remained relevant year after year, until now. But why? To some, Ringling gave up
its core values and became something different when it removed elephants from its show. To others, no matter the advances or new innovations, it was still the circus that you only needed to see once. To others, it was a lumbering icon that couldn’t change quickly enough to keep up with the pace of technology and today’s entertainment. Perhaps, this is less Ringling Bros. giving up or giving in and more a statement of the America we live in today. We gravitate to sexy headlines. We are intrigued more by the glitz and less by the substance. We place stereotypes on things that we are reluctant to ever modify. We expose our youth more to what is ahead and much less to what is now. Reality works best when there is controversy or big names. But, that has never been the circus’ way. Theirs was a way of basic, good old-fashioned American values. This ending of an era sends a message to all of us. It reminds us that relevance is fleeting. It reminds us, as parents and grandparents, that we must find new forms of entertainment to bring our families together. It reminds us to hold on to what is important to each of us – whether it is the circus or something else. At its core, this is about family values – and working fiercely to protect them – in
whatever way is most appropriate to today’s family. The circus that convened families, generations and communities is soon to be no longer here. For many it has been replaced by the bright lights of the computer screen and video games as well as the solitude it brings. We may not be able to recreate the greatest show on earth, but we can recreate the environment and the magic that it was to families who came together to celebrate the goodness and wholesomeness it represented. There will be many questions. What really happened to end this era? What will become of the animals for whom Ringling provided such genuine and remarkable care? What will happen to the children who no longer have the greatest show on earth? There will be answers. But, unfortunately, not the same answers our parents had for us. Ringling Bros., RIP. Is Your Road To Retirement Poorly Mapped Out? Can you imagine going on an extended vacation without making any plans? No websites or tour guides consulted. No hotel reservations made. No itinerary mapped out. Of course not. If you wanted your vacation to be a success, you’d budget enough money to cover your costs. You’d know when you were going, how long you could stay and at least generally what you would do while there. But when it comes to the longest vacation most people will ever take – retirement – fewer than half of all Americans have a formal plan. And that can spell trouble. “There’s nothing worse than being 85 years old, full of life, and being flat broke,” says Randy Becker, a retirement planner and co-founder of the Becker Retirement Group in Bellevue, Washington (www.beckerretirement.com). But it takes some work to avoid the many pitfalls that can ruin your golden years, Becker says. Inflation, taxes, bad health and bad investments can be devastating. “It’s up to you to have a sound plan, so you can focus on the important aspects of a wonderful retirement life,” he says.
Becker offers these tips for getting started so you’ll know you’re ready to begin your retirement journey: • Get everybody on board. You and your spouse need to agree on your retirement goals – and the financial decisions that will get you there. Start talking about priorities: Do you want to relocate? Stay close to the grandkids? Are you emotionally and physically ready for retirement? How long will each of you keep working, and how will that affect the income streams you’ll rely on when those paychecks stop? • Make a budget. Most people think their expenses will go down after they retire, but usually that doesn’t happen. Your wardrobe budget might go down when you aren’t working, but other expenses might go up if you travel, enjoy new hobbies, or start going out more for dinner, movies and concerts. • Know where your money will come from. Most financial professionals agree that income is king when it comes to retirement planning. A pile of scattered paperwork and account statements is not a plan. A good advisor can help you maxi-
mize your Social Security benefits, come up with tax-efficient distribution strategy and talk to you about other options, such as annuities, that can guarantee income in retirement. This is vital as people now live 20, 30 or even 40 years after retiring. • Know your retirement timeline and reevaluate your risk tolerance. One of the biggest mistakes investors nearing retirement make is sticking with the same advisor and portfolio they had when they were younger. You’ll need to move to a more diversified approach, with fewer risks and more protection for that all-important income. Although he’s a financial professional, Becker says retirement is about more than money. There’s also the adjustment retirees must make from working every day to suddenly having too much time on their hands. “Perpetual Saturdays are exciting for about a week,” Becker says. “Maybe you’ll find ways to volunteer. Maybe you’ll learn to paint or play guitar. Maybe you’ll end up working part-time. But most people discover that they need something in retirement that will keep them engaged and excited about life.”

CITY NEWS Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom
Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands. At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things. Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raised her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who
said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned. When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning. I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida. What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed! an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match. Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry. Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare
workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. How To Stay Young (At Least In Spirit) When You’re Retired Mohr Keet of South Africa bungee jumped when he was 96, landing himself in the Guinness Board of World Records. Yuichiro Miura of Japan climbed Mount Everest when he was 80. Not everyone in the golden years of life will attempt and accomplish such extraordinary feats, but most people can take steps to keep themselves young – at least in spirit – when they reach retirement. Unfortunately, for many people retirement planning remains fixated on finances, so when the big day arrives they’re not quite ready to segue into life’s new chapter, says Ann Vanderslice (www.annvanderslice.com), president and CEO of Retirement Planning Strategies, which specializes in advising federal workers about their benefits. “After you’ve planned for the money, there is still anxiety about retirement,” she says. “You don’t know what it’s like to not work and so there is that emotional part of retirement you need to manage. Sometimes people aren’t ready in any way, shape or form.” She says a few ways to hang onto a little youthful exuberance while aging gracefully in retirement include: • Be a lifelong learner. Making the effort to learn about new things keeps our brains young. Read something you wouldn’t normally read. Sit in on a lecture that a college opens to the public. “Some of my clients mention they took classes in philosophy or in a foreign language,” Vanderslice says. “It’s proven that those who are lifelong learners have a greater sense of optimism and a lower chance of dementia.” • See the world – or at least some of it. There are no doubt plenty of places you haven’t ventured out to, some close by and others far away. Traveling and enjoying new experiences is a great way to keep
you feeling young and enthusiastic about life, Vanderslice says, whether you head to a state park just an hour’s drive away or you board a plane bound for Paris. “Part of the fun of traveling is deciding where you want to go,” Vanderslice says. “The sky should be the limit.” Don’t eliminate anything from your initial list just because of expense, she says. You might be able to find bargains, and because you’re retired you can travel any time you want, which allows you go in the off season when prices are lower. • Remember your doctor’s advice. April Miller remembers it well. She was in the 10th grade at North Miami Beach High School in 1983, when the Aventura Mall was officially dedicated. A 1.2-million-square-foot complex, which at the time included Lord & Taylor, J.C. Penney, Sears and Macy’s, which was the first store in Florida. From the beginning, it was a state-of-the-art shopping facility that was the talk of the southeast. With the 163rd Street Shopping Center aging, and the customer base not what it once was, something was needed to facilitate the growing northeast Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward population. “Back then, there was nothing up this way,” Miller recalled. “We lived in North Miami Beach and would shop at the Publix on Aventura Boulevard. “When they opened the Mall, it was a real treat for everyone. The food court, and the many new stores, we just didn’t have down here.” As more and more people were heading to the Aventura Mall throughout the 1990’s, and the need for additional restaurants and shopping destinations became an issue, ground was broken in 1996, on an expansion that was built onto the southeast end of the existing complex, consisting of a three-story
atrium with an AMC Theatres multiplex cinema and so much more. There Is So Much To Look Forward To Through the years, the Mall added so many new stores keeping up with the growing clientele - and now - as we are fully in a new year - the landmark will debut a new three-level expansion wing, which is scheduled for later this year. The new space is designed to create an inviting exchange between the indoors and outdoors, providing a dynamic shopping and dining experience blended with experiential, artistic elements, including a nearly 93-foot tall sculpture by renowned Belgian artist Carsten Höller that Aventura Mall visitors will be able to slide down. Highlighting the new wing will be a two-level Topshop Topman store, marking the British brand’s arrival to South Florida. “I have worked in this Mall for 14 years at different stores, so to me, the expansion is needed to keep thousands and thousands coming to this facility,” Margaret Ali explained. “When I was younger, and living in Miami, my parents used to take me here all the time. Great memories of this place.”
While many were not around when the Aventura Mall was taking shape, and part of the history, what they see now, is truly exciting. The new wing also will feature the much-anticipated return of Zara. The 34,000+ square-foot, two-level store will include an array of men’s, women’s and children’s collections. Pomellato and Under Armour also will open in the wing. Designed by renowned architect Carlos Zapata, the wing’s three key design points – transparency, connectivity and integration – will provide a completely unique experience for visitors. An 84-foot by 50-foot glass wall at the entrance will offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. A continuous 350-foot skylight runs the length of the wing, providing natural lighting and stunning views of the rooftop terrace. An open-air, lushlylandscaped piazza will be defined by eye-catching architecture and populated by contemporary art, people and nature. It will provide shaded, inside-outside dining experiences from an array of inviting restaurants and cafes, including CVI.CHE 105, Serafina, Pubbelly Sushi, Harry’s Pizzeria, Blue Bottle and more to come. “Our vision is to create a new
gathering place where local residents and international guests can connect with an array of interactive experiences,” said Jackie Soffer, Co-Chair and CEO of Turnberry Associates, owner and manager of Aventura Mall. “The new wing is destined to become one of South Florida’s most dynamic spaces.” Arts Aventura Mall: An Interactive Journey Building upon Aventura Mall’s already existing collection of museum-quality works of contemporary art, the new wing offers observation points for visitors to enjoy and experience transformative, site-specific installations typically reserved for galleries and museums. 7 often missed baby-proofing tips (BPT) - Most parents, or soonto-be parents, are often aware of the obvious baby proofing checklist items: baby gates, electrical outlet covers, cabinet locks, sharp furniture corners, etc. However, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there are a surprising number of “hidden” hazards around the home. These hazards, such as window cords, hide in plain sight and should be on everyone’s list of items to baby proof. Corded window coverings are a strangulation hazard as infants and young children can accidentally become entangled in the cords. CPSC, the window covering industry and consumer safety advocates all agree that only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords should be used in homes with young children. The window covering industry’s Best for Kids(TM) certification program makes it easy for parents and
caregivers to identify the window covering products that are best suited for homes with young children. According to the CPSC, corded window coverings are one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes. Check your window coverings for exposed or dangling cords and replace them with cordless products. Safety experts recommend using only cordless window coverings in homes with young children. High Tech Hope for Sinus Sufferers (BPT) - Katherine Troise is one of the roughly 31 million people who suffer from sinusitis, an inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages, which can become infected. It causes symptoms like facial pain and pressure, headaches, and fatigue, and the discomfort can interfere with daily life, the ability to sleep and cause people to limit activities and even miss work. Cold and flu season doesn’t help because respiratory tract infections, colds, and viral or bacterial infections can cause inflammation that blocks the sinus openings. Other causes include nasal allergies, reactive airway disease, such as Asthma, other medical conditions like Cystic Fibrosis, or even scar tissue from a previous surgery. Those with symptoms for 12 weeks or more are said to have chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Like Troise, some struggle
with sinusitis for years before finding relief. A survey of 400 CRS sufferers, found that more than half suffered for 15 years or more. Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer
According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle. Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage. Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.
“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.” Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process. “I have already witnessed many suc-
cess stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds. “I wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr. Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

5 mistakes to avoid when buying your first home (BPT) - Buying a home for the first time is comparable to the first time you ride a bike. You can learn about how it works from your parents and observe it from a distance, but you really won’t know the ins and outs until you actually sit down on the bicycle and start riding. Like most beginners, first-time homebuyers will likely make a few mistakes as they initially go through the home-buying process in the upcoming year. Here are five mistakes first-time homebuyers often make, and how to best avoid them.
1. Waiting too long to make an offer. One of the biggest mistakes first-time homebuyers will make in 2017 is simply waiting too long to get into the real estate market, according to Jay Carr, a senior loan advisor for RPM Mortgage in Newport Beach, California. However, because these buyers are typically self-sufficient when it comes to other purchases, they often think they know best when it comes to what price they want to offer. “Buyers rely too much on what they see on the internet, instead of the good advice of what they would hear from a real estate agent,” Carr says. Carr says many firsttime buyers have grown up thinking that they need to save up for a 20 percent down payment before they can enter the housing market. While it is always great to have as much money to put down as possible before you purchase a home, it’s important to consider many of the new options available today. The median tenure of a homeowner in 2017 is about 10 years, but for the 20-year period before that it was only six. Believing that this won’t be your last house can take a bit of pressure off the home being perfectly suited for you. 5. Not having your own representation. Another mistake a firsttime homebuyer can make is not having their own representation (meaning that they use the seller’s agent as their own buyer’s agent). While this is not always a bad situation, Carr cautions buyers to be careful that they have selected a good and trustworthy real estate agent that is looking after their best interests. What is PMI? PMI is a type of mortgage insurance. Like most other types of mortgage insurance, it protects the lender in the event the borrower is unable to repay the remainder of the loan. In many cases, PMI is required on conventional loans when the buyer has a down payment of less than 20 percent. Some lenders may offer conventional loans that require a smaller down payment without PMI, but the tradeoff can typically be a higher interest rate. How does PMI affect your loan? PMI can affect your loan in several different ways depending on the loan type and the lender. In some cases, the PMI will be required in a lump sum at the time of closing. This PMI payment type is called an upfront premium. Other PMI plans call for monthly payments where the total value of the PMI is divided and factored
into your monthly mortgage payments. The PMI can generally be cancelled under certain conditions once 20 percent of the amount borrowed has been reduced from the principal balance, or amount borrowed. Finally, the lender may also opt for a plan that requires both upfront and monthly PMI payments. In this case a portion of the PMI is paid at the time of closing, and then the remaining PMI is paid as part of the monthly mortgage payment. Alternatives to PMI: Some government-backed loans offer alternative options to buyers paying less than 20 percent down on a home loan. There are several of these loans and each has a different approach to handling down payments and mortgage insurance.
