5 Tips to Stop Waking Up Exhausted (Family Features) It’s no secret that finding time for the recommended eight hours of sleep is easier said than done. More often than not, your time asleep is limited by your busy schedule. If you are lucky enough to squeeze in 8 hours of sleep, you’re still not guaranteed to wake up feeling refreshed.

While some responsibilities are hard to shake, setting yourself up with the right routine can vastly improve your quality of sleep and combat the issues keeping you up at night: 1. Lighten up: If it’s never light in your bedroom, you may be confusing your body’s circadian clock. The circadian clock regulates how alert you are due to the light and darkness in an environment. If you keep your bedroom dark during the day or use black-out curtains,

this can act as a signal to your body that it should be asleep. Swap out your curtains for a lighter color or keep your shades partially open - natural sunlight in your room can help you wake up in the morning. 2. Out with the old: Approximately half (49 percent) of Americans have had their mattress for five years or more and while people struggle with sleep for a variety of reasons, your mattress could be keeping you from getting a good night’s sleep. A quality mattress, like the Beautyrest Platinum Hybrid Mattress can give you the support you need to wake up feeling refreshed. It offers a “cool to touch” surface while also providing the support and pressure relief necessary to make sure that once you fall asleep, you stay asleep. 3. Tune out: Everyone’s guilty of binge-watching their favorite TV shows from time to

time. While you may satisfy your curiosity by catching the ending of your favorite series, you may not be so happy when you wake up groggy after staying up too late. Set an alarm for 30 minutes before you want to go to sleep and when the alarm goes off turn off your TV and get ready for bed. Limiting screen time before you fall asleep can also avoid disrupting your body’s level of melatonin, which controls sleep cycles. 4. If you snooze, you lose: Hitting the snooze button even once in the morning can make you feel groggy throughout the day. By hitting snooze, you are prompting your body to start another stage in your sleep cycle without giving it enough time to fully recover. Try downloading an app with a smart alarm to make sure that you are waking up during a lighter stage of your sleep cycle. 5. Cut the caffeine: While

there is nothing quite like coffee for an afternoon pick-me-up, having caffeine after 2 p.m. can impact both your sleep quality

and quantity. Instead of having a cup after lunch, take your coffee break earlier in the day or consider switching to decaf.

AVENTURA While research continues to be done to find out more about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, it is still taking lives every day. We do know that it is a progressive neuromuscular disease. Most people who develop ALS, are between the ages of 40 and 70, although the disease can occur at a younger age. It occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic or socioeconomic boundaries. It affects as many as 30,000 people in the United States, with 5,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Estimates suggest that ALS is responsible for as many as five of every 100,000 deaths in people aged 20 or older. While some may know of people affected with ALS, to others it hits closer to home. When Stu Hendel was recently diagnosed with ALS, it was Ken Hendel and his sister, Amy Hendel, who were affected by the news. The owners of GALLERY ART - internationally recognized, have a 30 year-old fine art gallery in Aventura, they knew that they could make a major contribution to the fight against ALS and support loved ones. To honor Stu, they have organized an event on Thursday, March 30th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event’s purpose is to spread awareness about the disease and raise funds for ALS Worldwide, a nonprofit organization that helps Stu and thousands like him, in Florida and around the globe. 100% of the proceeds benefit ALS. Gallery Art, a fine art gallery with an 8,000 sq. ft. showroom that features a world-class collection of

artwork from artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo Picasso and many more. The evening will include a silent auction, light refreshments, music, art tours, a brief video presentation and engaging speakers.

Clearanail: It’s a game changer in the battle against toenail fungus AVENTURA – If you want to get Dr. Abraham Wagner to smile, talk about the revolutionary Clearanail® toenail procedure. Dr. Wagner, who is the only South Florida podiatrist to offer a procedure that many are calling “revolutionary,” “state-ofthe-art” and “game changing,” realizes that patients with embarrassing, discolored/yellow, thickened or crumbling nails can receive enhanced treatment. “This is a treatment that will really change the landscape of toenail fungus and the way patients can now start to feel and look better quickly,” said Dr. Wagner. “Being the only one that uses this procedure here in South Florida, gives us the opportunity to show how well this works.” Patient testimonials have already been flooding in – as Dr. Wagner and his quality staff con-

tinue to see results in patients who have been suffering for years. While Dr. Wagner will never criticize another procedure or treatment method, he understands that traditional treatment options for unsightly toenails are sometimes less effective, because they are unable to get through the toe’s nail plate and to the nail bed. “I am not going to point fingers at laser treatment – because we still use that method, but when I tell our patients and show them Clearanail®, they are convinced,” Dr. Wagner pointed out. “We also use our laser in conjunction with this procedure, so it’s the best of both effective treatments.” You Can See The Difference With Clearanail® Controlled Micro Penetration™ (CMP) tech-

nology, Dr. Wagner can penetrate the nail plate safely, painlessly, and effectively. That’s a major reason to try it. “I try and see things from every side, and when I look at what Clearanail® brings to the table as far as treatment, you cannot be anything but excited,” Dr. Wagner said. “People are really living with a lot of discomfort, when they really don’t have to.” Clearanail® is the world’s first intelligent nail drill to utilize patented (CMP™) technology. A fully-automated fail safe system creates micro-pathways in thick toenails so that topical treatments may be used more effectively. Explaining The Procedure Once, the virtually invisible holes are painlessly drilled into the patient’s nail plate, topical treatments can reach the nail bed in much higher concentrations by targeting the source of the problem. The drill uses smart-sensor technology, which allows it to “know” when to stop drilling. This technology pre-

vents any pain to the patient or damage to the nail bed. “The other important thing that all patients should know, is that unlike other new technologies for toenails that require several practice visits and procedures, Clearanail® is effective with only a single treatment,” Dr. Wagner said. Of course, depending on how many toes need to be treated, the procedure takes between 15 and 30 minutes on average. Patients are then sent home to apply topical treatments until the affected toenail grows out and a much healthy nail grows in its place. As laser has long been a very

effective way of treating toenail issues, times change; discoveries are made, coming up with ways to do things better. It happens in all walks of life, but when you have something that can make your life better – you explore it. Dr. Wagner is accepting patients for the Clearanail® procedure. Anyone who is suffering from discolored, thickened, or crumbling toenails, can contact Abraham Wagner, DPM to schedule a consultation at (954) 8856970.

wound care needs, but any other problems, when it comes to a podiatry issue,” Dr. Wagner pointed out. “Patients respond a lot better when they are home and can heal quicker with less stress of battling traffic and waiting in an office.” Believing that: “what is old is new again”, Dr. Wagner has brought back medicine to when our parents and grandparents were all part of those house calls in the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

Staying away from serious eye problems Braverman Eye Center has kept Andy Pappas on his feet

MARCH 2017 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 10

Growing up in Chicago, and working for the City, Andy Pappas used his eyes for a lot of paperwork. While he was nearsighted and had to wear corrective lenses since the age of 4, there was never a reason to worry about eye problems - since his job depended on being able to read a lot during the course of the week. The first time that Pappas noticed anything wrong with his eyes was when he suffered a torn retina back in 1997. A visit to his family eye doctor uncovered the problem and it was corrected with rest, allowing time for it to heal. “Even though I had to wear glasses to see, I never had anything that completely shut me down or took over my life,” he explained. “Even when I had the torn retina, I was told that it was something that is not uncommon with patients who are nearsighted.” While it was explained to Pappas, in reality, vitreous gel, which is the clear material that fills the eyeball, is attached to the retina in the back of the eye. As we get older, the vitreous may change shape, pulling away from the retina. If the vitreous pulls a piece of the retina with it, it causes a retinal tear. Once a retinal tear occurs, vitreous fluid may seep through and lift the retina off the back wall of the eye, causing the retina to detach or pull away. Because he traveled back and forth with his wife from South Florida to Chicago, Pappas kept his family eye doctor back home, but after his wife suffered a stroke in 2013, they decided it was best to move to Hallandale Beach full-time. As a resident of the area, Pappas didn’t seek out a new eye doctor until he needed to make an appointment for an examination. Asking around for opinions on what doctors were the best, the name Dr. Stanley Braverman and the Braverman Eye Center came up. It turned out to be the best advice this 70-year-old received. While waiting for the routine examination, Pappas felt that something wasn’t right. He was on target. The same torn retina he had experienced in his right eye was now present in his other eye. “I still remember going to see Dr. Braverman and how impressed I was with the office and everything that they did,” Pappas recalled. “He told me straight out that my retina was torn. I knew something wasn’t right. We tend to know our bodies pretty well.”

gery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range.

Dr. Stanley Braverman and satisfied patient Andy Pappas. He was so pleased by the work they did, Pappas decided to make Dr. Braverman his regular eye doctor. Over the past four years, the Hallandale Beach resident who would walk to his eye appointments from his home, felt at ease, knowing that he had the best around. With his torn retina healed and working a few days a week at a local golf course, Pappas started to notice changes in his eyesight. When he went to see what was happening, he was told, by Dr. Braverman that he had developed cataracts in both eyes. It was news that he never expected to hear. “Even though I was apprehensive about the procedure and worried a lot, Dr. Braverman assured me that I had nothing to be concerned about,” Pappas recalled. “I had the first laser assisted surgery in April and then the other one done a few weeks later. I was completely healed and back doing what I like to do in a week.” The surgeries were explained by everyone in the office - and that was what made the experience different in other offices - without that personal touch. An avid walker who enjoys eating at the local restaurants and visiting many businesses, Pappas is feeling great and living life in year-round perfect weather. “Our eyesight is so precious and important, it’s natural to be a little nervous when you have anything done to our

eyes,” Pappas said. “But from the time you check in to seeing Dr. Braverman and his assistants, you are in good hands.” What Are Cataracts? A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or sur-

Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. If your eye qualifies, the second option, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery can now be done using state of the art Femtosecond Laser technology to assist with parts of the cataract surgical procedure, including softening up the cloudy camera lens. This reduces the amount of high frequency ultrasound needed. Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery takes a delicate procedure and refines it even more, so that the surgical precision is unparalleled. The computer-guided accuracy of the laser compliments your doctor’s skills with today’s latest technology. An artificial man made lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. There are several types of high quality premium vision lenses that can be used, giving you potentially better results than with a standard basic lens. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, and Dr. Braverman’s newly trademarked LACE™ procedure.

CITY NEWS Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands. At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things. Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raised her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who

said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned. When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning. I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida. What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed! Although I had resisted going through

an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match. Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry. Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare

workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete pre-employment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem, question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. And, as in the case of the missing Marie, Terry told me they would have become integrally involved in the investigation. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring.

Chris MacDonald’s Memories Of Elvis In Concert Comes To Aventura, March 25th This Tribute Shares The Incredible Story Of ‘The Shy Humble Country Boy Who Would Become The King Of Rock-nRoll. Chris MacDonald’s love for music came from his mother. She was the one person who had a great understanding and passion for some of the iconic performers of all time. While growing up and using some of that knowledge his mother shared with him, the legend that was - and still is Elvis Presley - was indeed someone that MacDonald seemed to embrace. His music, style and overall way his entire presence captured audiences - of all ages. That inspiration, and understanding the impact that Presley made, was what motivated MacDonald and drove him to be a performer. Not just someone who would imitate Presley, but pay tribute to a man who gave so many the best of his talents as a singer, actor and a giving man. The Memory Of Elvis Lives On Thirty-Nine years ago, we lost one of the greatest entertainers and pop culture icons of our time. If you are longing for the incredible voice, here’s your chance to come celebrate the life and music of Elvis Presley, when MacDonald presents Memories of Elvis in Concert - with a performance on Sat., March 25th (8 p.m.) at the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center. “What we have done with this show is to make this the ultimate tribute to one of the greatest entertainers of all time,” MacDonald explains. “This is a show where everyone gets involved - because they know these songs and have so many of their own memories.”

MARCH 2017 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 18

Sharing Some Memorable Experiences What makes this show extra special, and has indeed thrilled and entertained so many, is that MacDonald not only sings and performs, but his knowledge and the history of Elvis Presley’s life, gives him a chance to relate stories to the audiences about every song and the meaning behind them. During the concert, MacDonald engages the entire audience with his personality and “Elvis-isms” right down to throwing out Hawaiian leis to the audience, little stuffed teddy bears and, of course, the signature Elvis scarf.

Chris Macdonald Has Worked With The Best An accomplished and experienced entertainer, MacDonald has performed in Las Vegas, Branson (Mo.) and with the famous Legends in Concert stage productions. He has also headlined with Elvis’ own original back up group, the Jordanaires and D.J Fontana (Presley’s original drummer) at the famous Hard Rock Live Concert Arena. “When you perform songs such as That’s All Right or Blue Suede Shoes, Don’t Be Cruel and Jailhouse Rock and tell a story or relate something to the audience about each and everyone, it truly brings out the best of everything we are doing,” MacDonald said. A Full Production Show Awaits With a playlist that has everyone dancing in their seats, MacDonald truly puts on a show that can only be described as a full evening of song, history and a tribute to one of the best ever. His full production show sells out venues

throughout the country. The show is not a parody or an overdone impersonation. It is a natural, heartfelt tribute to an American Icon and his music. Adding to the authenticity of his impressive tribute, Chris had the ultimate honor of being the “Only Tribute Artist hired by Elvis Presley Enterprises to perform at Graceland’s Heartbreak Hotel.” From The Beginning “This tribute shares the incredible story of ‘the shy humble country boy who became the King of Rock-n-Roll’,” MacDonald pointed out. “There are highlights of several stages of his iconic career: the early years, the movies, the black leather 1968 Comeback, and the white fringe 1970’s Vegas concerts.” With an 8-piece band and two backup singers, live music and many costume changes, Chris MacDonald’s Memories of Elvis in Concert takes you back in time. If you grew up with such hits as It’s

Now or Never, A Big Hunk O’ Love, King Creole, Let Me Be Your Teddy Bear or dozens of other No. 1 hits, you will want to be in Aventura for this performance. It is guaranteed to be a show that will have you singing for days. It will also bring in new fans who have learned to appreciate great music - the way it used to be. If you signed up for coverage, it’s important to understand how your prescription drug costs may be affected. Even if you did nothing to alter your coverage, some features of your plan may have changed for 2017. Getting a handle on Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage is important to your health as well as your pocketbook. “A survey by Walgreens showed that in order to manage prescription drug costs, some people have delayed filling a current prescription or occasionally skipped prescribed doses to stretch medication,” said John Lee, senior director of Medicare at Walgreens. “This is a real concern as it can pose significant health risks, so it’s vital to evaluate your medical situation, have a plan that best fits your needs and

Use a less expensive brand or generic. The brand-name drug your doctor prescribed can do wonders for your symptoms but be worrisome for your budget. Many brand-name drugs have generic or other brand substitutes. First, make sure your doctor considers generic options. If those options aren’t available, there may be lower-cost brand-name drugs used to treat the same condition. Ask your pharmacist if you have that option then talk with your doctor to see if switching brands makes sense in your situation. Finally, whatever your prescription may be, a 90-day supply from

is in the preferred pharmacy network for many of the largest Medicare sponsors and, effective January 2017, offers copays as low as $0 on generic medications for select plans. Filling a generic medication at a non-preferred pharmacy could cost you $3, $5 or even $10 for the same drug. Seek Medicare’s Extra Help program and other ways to save. Medicare offers an Extra Help program to help people with limited income and resources pay Medicare prescription drug program costs, like premiums, deductibles and coinsurance. Make sure you’re taking full advantage of your insurance coverage,

then understand how to get the most value from your plan and pharmacy.” The survey shows that even though prescription drug costs are among the top concerns for Medicare beneficiaries, approximately one out of every five beneficiaries lacks a good understanding of their insurance plan. Roughly the same percentage falsely believes that all pharmacies charge the same copay and one-third of “A survey by Walgreens showed that in order to respondents didn’t know manage prescription drug costs, some people have they can switch pharmacies at any time, including delayed filling a current prescription or occasionally outside of the annual skipped prescribed doses to stretch medication,” enrollment period. Afraid Of A Hefty Long-Term Care Bill? Life Insurance Holds The Answer Even as aging Americans revel in the splendor of their wellearned retirements they still harbor plenty of worries, such as outliving their

savings. Near the top of the worry list is the fear their health will deteriorate so much they’ll be forced to seek long-term care, a

situation that could live them and their families slammed with expenses far beyond what they can afford. Surprisingly enough, the solution to this particular problem may be right in their home, tucked away in a drawer. “Many people don’t realize that a life insurance policy can be converted to pay for assisted living, home care and all other forms of long-term care,” says Chris Orestis, a senior-care advocate and author of the books “Help on the Way” and “A Survival Guide to Aging.” “What’s really sad is that, when they’re suddenly confronted with the reality of long-term care expenses, some older people may let the policy lapse figuring they can no longer afford it. And it’s the very thing that holds the answer to their financial worries.” Part of the problem is that, while millions of peo-

ple own life insurance policies, few of them understand their rights as owner, says Orestis, CEO of Life Care Funding, www.lifecarefunding.com. “Life insurance policies are assets,” he says. “Think of them just like a house. The owner of a house wouldn’t just move out without selling their property. Why should the owner of a policy ‘move out’ without first finding out what the real value of the policy is?” Here are a few key facts about how that life insurance policy can be converted to a long-term care benefit plan and potentially rescue from the senior and their family from the back-breaking financial strain of long-term care: • The benefit plan is not long-term care insurance. A long-term care benefit plan allows policy holders

to use any form of life insurance policy to pay for long-term care. In essence, what was a death benefit that would have been paid to the person’s survivors becomes a “living benefit” that covers the expenses of the policy holder now. • You can convert when you need it. You can’t wait until you’re about to move into a nursing home or assisted-living facility to buy long-term care insurance. At that point, it’s too late. But you can convert a life insurance policy to a long-term benefit plan at any time. There are no waiting periods, no care limitations and there are no costs or obligations to apply, Orestis says. • The full death benefit comes into play. The value of the conversion is not

limited to the cash value, but is based on the death benefit. “That means the senior will receive a maximum amount of value toward their long-term care benefit plan,” Orestis

says. If the insured person dies before the benefit amount is exhausted, any remaining balance is paid to the family or the named beneficiary as a final lump-sum payment. “Families can go broke trying to provide for a loved one,” Orestis says. “In many cases, they could have avoided it but they had only known about this solution.”

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle. Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage. Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.” Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process. “I have already witnessed many suc-

cess stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds. “I wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr. Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Dr. Charlton Adler is certified by three prestigious Boards: the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine, and he is a Certified Wound Care Specialist. His main office is located at 1380 NE Miami Gardens Drive, Suite 235 North Miami Beach, FL 33179. Staff is bilingual Spanish. Unexpected Strategies For Fighting Allergies Wheezing and sneezing definitely isn’t the most invigorating way of getting through the day. But runny noses, congestion and itchy throats are an unfortunate fact of life for the more than 50 million Americans who suffer from nasal allergies that can be triggered by tree pollen, grass pollen, dust mites, pet dander, mold and other causes. Some experience their worst moments in the spring. For others the agony arrives in the fall. And some unfortunates deal with the problem year-round. Max Wiseberg under-

stands and identifies with their watery eyes and every “achoo” that escapes their lips. “I had hay fever all my life and I tried everything,” Wiseberg says. “I took pills. I underwent acupuncture. Either the remedies didn’t work, gave me headaches or made me drowsy.” Not one to give up, Wiseberg mulled the problem between sneezes and finally latched onto a wonderfully crazy idea during a conversation with his sister. She suggested that it would be marvelous if there was something you could rub on the base of your nostrils to trap the allergen invaders before

they could enter the nasal passages and begin their insidious work. Inspired, Wiseberg created an organic, natural nasal balm that he dubbed HayMax™ (www.haymax .us), which could accomplish just what his sister envisioned – act as a block against pollen, dust or pet allergen. Less allergen in the body meant less for the body to react against. “It was like magic and I was greatly relieved,” he says. For Wiseberg, the personal battle with hay fever was the beginning of a new business endeavor. Not every allergy solution

arouses the entrepreneurial spirit in sufferers, but many remedies are perhaps nearly as magical, including: • Sex. In one of the more creative solutions to the problem, an Iranian neurologist suggested in a 2008 study that sex might hold the key to hay fever relief. According to the neurologist, Sina Zarrintan, here’s why: At the point of orgasm the sympathetic nervous system constricts blood vessels across the body. This can help with the nasal congestion associated with hay fever because the congestion usually is caused

by membranes becoming swollen from inflamed blood vessels. One downside for women: Zarrintan’s research applied only to men. • Pineapple and other luscious treats. Some foods are natural antihistamines. Capers, red onions and watercress, for example, contain high amounts of the natural antihistamine quercetin. Toss in a side order of pineapple because it contains bromelain, which helps the body absorb quercetin. • Curry, the spicier the better. If you’re dining out Indian style, choosing the

hottest curry on the menu can help your hay fever. If you’re making your own curry, feel free to pour on the spices. Turmeric, an orange-yellow spice, widely used in curries and South Asian cuisine, is believed to reduce inflammation caused by the enzyme phospholipase A2, which is provoked into action by pollen in your system. For itchy-eyed allergy sufferers, there’s just one ultimate goal. “You want relief,” Wiseberg says. “You’re not going to find a cure, so the next best thing is to avoid or block the pollen whenever you can.”

Is My Teen Using Drugs? Can I Know For Sure?

MARCH 2017 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 24

The drug-abuse crisis among teenagers and young adults isn’t abating. Prescription drugs, especially opioids, are a growing threat to the health of young people, with 6 percent of teens 12 to 17 saying they use the drugs for non-medical reasons. And in 2014, prescription drugs caused the overdose death of 1,741 young people ages 18 to 25, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. If those statistics aren’t alarming enough, studies reveal that 3 percent of teens have used heroin and that drug’s use is on the rise. In 2009, 21,000 teens sought treatment for heroin addiction, compared to 4,400 10 years earlier, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. So how can parents concerned their teen might be using opioids or other drugs find out for sure? Some parents seek to confirm their suspicions with one of the many drug-testing kits available at the corner pharmacy. But clever teens and free-market ingenuity are making the accuracy of those urine drug tests questionable. In fact, the urine drug test cheating industry is estimated to be near $1 billion, with products easily purchased on the web, including synthetic urine, substitute urine and even devices aimed solely at defeating the drug test. “Unfortunately, there’s a whole industry of products out there that help

people cheat the drug tests,” says Dr. Matt McCarty, CEO and founder of Genotox Laboratories (www.genotoxlabs.com). “Even if you decide to make your child use a urine test, savvy teenagers know that once you send them into the restroom alone they can substitute a friend’s urine or synthetic urine and trick you.” The challenge for parents is to confirm that their handy drug-testing kit really is testing their teen’s urine and not someone else’s. They aren’t the only ones who face that predicament. Drug-test cheating is a problem that human resource departments, law enforcement and other agencies or businesses that test for drugs encounter as well. Cheating the tests also is a problem when monitoring patients who are taking opioid medications under a doctor’s care, or who are undergoing rehab and recovery from addiction. But there are ways to foil the cheaters. Genotox Labs, for example, developed a product called ToxProtect™ that adds a cheek swab to the urine-collection process so the DNA can be matched. “With a DNA test, there’s no maybe about it,” McCarty says. “It either matches or it doesn’t match.” What might lead a parent to insist on a drug test for their teen? The National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence says there are drug-abuse

warning signs parents can look for, and McCarty says all parents should be on the lookout for these signs. They include: • Physical and health signs. Bloodshot eyes; pupils smaller or larger than normal; frequent nosebleeds; changes in appetite or sleep patterns; sudden weight loss or weight gain; deterioration in personal grooming or physical appearance; and impaired or unstable coordination. • Behavioral signs. Skipping class and declining grades; loss of interest in extracurricular activities; acting isolated, silent or withdrawn; demanding more privacy and avoiding eye contact; and sudden change in relationships and friends. • Psychological warning signs. Sudden

mood changes, irritability, angry outbursts or laughing at nothing; periods of unusual hyperactivity or agitation; lack of motivation and inability to focus; appearing fearful, withdrawn, anxious, or paranoid for no apparent reason. While schools and other agencies may provide some help, ultimately it’s up to the parents to address a teen’s drug problem, McCarty says. “All evidence suggests that preventing drug abuse starts at home,” he says. “It’s not someone else’s responsibility. It’s the person who has the problem and their family who need to deal with it. That’s why if you test your kid for drugs at home, you want to make sure you’re getting their results and aren’t letting them fool you.”
