Keeping your home and family safe from fire: When choosing holiday decorations be sure to select items that are flame resistant or have been treated with a flame retardant. Replace strings of lights that may be worn or have broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini light sets together and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in type fixtures. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the maximum number of LED strands that can be safely connected together. Do not block doors or windows with decorations and be sure to turn off all light strings before leaving your home or going to bed. Add water to the Christmas tree stand daily. Battery operated candles are safer than real candles and look just like the real thing. If you use real candles use a sturdy holder and keep a safe distance of at least 12 inches from anything that could burn such as drapes, bedding or furniture. Never leave a child alone in a room with a burning candle and blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed. In the kitchen, keep oven mitts and towels away from the stovetop. If you have a small grease fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. In the oven, turn it off and keep the door closed. When in doubt, get out of your house and call 911 immediately.

Can the power of positive thinking change your life? (BPT) - A positive attitude is one of the most powerful assets you can have. Positive people find success, good health, happiness, wealth and rewarding relationships throughout their lives. This is not because they are already successful, or because they are more confident, it is simply the attitude. The law of attraction is that positive thoughts lead to positive results. Your thoughts are much more powerful than just electric signals between synapses. They have the ability to define you and affect those around you. However, it's not easy to summon this way of thinking on command. It may take years of patience and practice to change your overall mentality. Learn from the example of others. "Early leaders in the United States understood the true meaning of positive thinking," says Stanley Murphy, department chair for the Graduate School of Business and Management at Argosy University, Nashville. "It is one aspect of the root of their success. Philip D. Armour, F.W. Woolworth, Thomas A. Edison, Marshall Field, Andrew Carnegie, Napoleon Hill and a host of other movers and shakers who participated in shaping our country in the early 20th century all understood these two powerful words: positive thinking." It is true that the most successful people throughout history have all recognized the power of positive thinking. Even Gandhi was a strong advocate of positive thinking. He is reported to have said, "A man is but the product of his thoughts; what he thinks, he becomes." So what are some proven methods to developing mastery in positive thinking? Well for starters, believe that you can become a positive thinker. "Invest and commit yourself to your own personal development," suggests Murphy. "You must first believe in yourself. When you do, you will notice that others believe in you too. Examine how you are investing in yourself. Make note in your observation of yourself. See if your personal investments are constructive or destructive. If they are destructive, then try to eliminate them. If constructive, then perfect them." R. Bay Area recommends interacting with people who are on the same journey, whether they are ahead or behind. "People project who they are and you will too. You'll start to pick up their traits and ways of approaching things," says Salinas. "Read books that talk about handling the lessons and challenges that come up in life and that mirror those you want to overcome in yours. In a few years, you'll find that your story of triumph over adversity
mirrors those you read about." Consider the physical aspects as well. Try to incorporate the practice of daily meditation (a minimum of 20 minutes a day) suggests Murphy. "Take care of your body and it will take care of you. Moderate exercise, balanced diet and adequate rest will keep you physically fit for your daily task." Also, try to be realistic. Everyone has down moments, and that's alright. "Positive atti-
tude is more than the sum of your feelings at any particular moment. If a loved one passes away or you are facing a challenge that feels overwhelming at the moment, it doesn't mean that you're not a positive person," adds Salinas. "Positive people have every right to feel sad. It's even healthy to express those feelings from time-to-time. Just remember that those moments don't define us."

Type-A personalities are well-known examples of the hostility-prone personality. Type-A personality traits are exemplified by aggressive behavior, an excessive need to compete with others, a sense of time urgency, and feelings of anger, hostility, and impatience. Many studies have been implemented to understand how a personality of this style develops. While there is some conjecture for a genetic component, a greater body of evidence has linked childhood environment as a potential factor. Parenting styles that offer excessive punitive & interfering qualities, insufficient acceptance of the child, non-supportive family environments, families high in conflict, and abuse, seem to bear children, particularly males, with self-insecurity and negativity toward others. It is the anger & hostility portion of this mix that appears to contribute to coronary heart disease.., even heart attack. There are a few physiological components that are suspected culprits in hostility’s impact on cardiovascular health. For some people, it may involve vasorestriction at the periphery of the heart, accompanied by accelerated heartrate. Anger & hostility promote more blood to be transferred to through vessels that are shrinking in size, causing excessive wear & tear on coronary arteries; thus, producing atherosclerosis. Sizable blood pressure changes are also a problem, as they can contribute to plaque formation. Abrupt changes in the catacholamines (neurepinephrine & epiniephrine), which are triggered when angry, may also play a part in the durability of vessels, while sympathetic nervous system activations can cause lipids to be exerted into the bloodstream……. SPOTLIGHT ON STAGE By Eleanor Hannan The classic Disney story of a young woman named Bell and a Beast who is really a young prince trapped in a spell. The Prince lived in a shining castle and although he had everything his heart desired, the Prince was spoiled, selfish, and very unkind. Repulsed by her ragged appearance, he turned the woman away. Before leaving, she warned him not to be deceived by her appearance, as beauty is not only skin deep, but it is what one sees within. When he dismissed her again, the old woman’s entire looks melted away, revealing a beautiful enchantress. Although the Prince tried to apologize, it was too late. Use of force does not only mean the shooting of a fire arm, it entails various techniques that begin with simple verbal communication By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - As our country is still going through turmoil over Ferguson, our city is taking measures to proactively evaluate our own use of force protocols. Even before the use of the police force became a national discussion, our city set out on a mission to improve our standards and increase our community policing efforts citywide. Over the past 5 years, there had been eight police involved in shootings within our city. One of the incidents was a non-contact shooting, four of the incidents resulted in injuries to one subject in each event and three of the incidents resulted in one fatality each. The individual shootings are at various stages of investigation ranging from completely closed with a finding of justified by prosecutorial authorities to actively pending investigations. It should be noted that in some cases, events leading to the discharge of fire arms began with crimes outside of our city limits. To understand why there was this increase in shooting incidents, the chief recommended that we hire the firm of Greenwood and Striecher to conduct a fully independent audit of our
department and protocols. Our department is already accredited, but this is a focused evaluation that involves all stakeholders. Use of force does not simply mean the shooting of a fire arm, it entails various techniques that begin with simple verbal communication, all the way to the point of using necessary force to protect life. The process will involve everyone; the commission, administration, all levels of officers and most importantly, our residents. It will include an evaluation of how our officers are trained and what is lacking in that training, our departments, cultural and interactions with the community. Through the many news outlets, the point of training has not been a major focus. Regretfully coming out of the worst recession our nation has seen in many years, cities had to cut back on training. The main priority is always having police working in the community. This means rather than laying off officers, other areas are trimmed. The final report will be a working document that will provide a guidance in what we are doing right and what needs to be improved. The Chief also informed the commission that during the evalua-

tion process, changes may occur right away if recommended by the firm. There will be many avenues for our entire community to engage and share their input. This will also be a good way to educate the community about policing and the many nuances and legal regulations that must be followed that are often misunderstood. This past Monday, the City Commission was presented with the design for our new main fire station. In May, we hired the architect firm of Currie Sowards and Aguila which has a history of designing over 30 stations for departments here in South Florida. Since May they have been working directly with Chief Dan Sullivan and key fire personnel to ensure that we create a state-of-the-art fire station and Emergency Operations Facility. The plans have already hit some major miles stones in preparation for approval to go out for bidding and permitting. The city as an agency must go through the same process as every other development that is constructed in the city. Plans go through a rigorous development review to ensure they will meet all of the south Florida Building Codes in addition to the other fire building standards.
After the application goes to the Planning and Zoning Board for review. In January, the 60 percent construction documents will be ready an then the project will go out to bid with and anticipated date of March. The station will be a two story, 25,000 square foot facility that will house our main fire operations. The first floor will include four apparatus bays, dorms, a day room, kitchen facilities and supervisory offices. Adjacent to the apparatus bays, the architects have designed bunker gear rooms, a work out facility and a fire training tower. This will mean our officers will have direct access to training for fire suppression without having to travel all the time to outside facilities. The second floor, will house all of the administrative offices of the department, conference room, EOC staging area/training room and a computer data room. The building envelope is being built to withstand a Category 5 hurricane with dual fuel emergency generator back up, which will be able to run the entire building. The architects have committed to build to a Silver LEED standard with the goal to reach Gold, they are one point away from this top standard. If it is reached it will be our city’s first gold stan-
dard building. The city met another milestone on the way to completing a world class park system and implementing the will of the voters of our community. On Monday, the ordinance filing for bond validation was passed on a 3-2 vote. This process is the legal process that entails the city going to the court for a hearing to verify the bond was adopted in the correct manor. Our city attorney has worked side by side with a special bond council to ensure that have we followed all of the rules and guidelines required

Free Admission at Art and Culture Center HOLLYWOOD - Enjoy four exhibitions for free at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood on Sunday, Dec. 21, the Center’s monthly Free Admission Day. In the Center’s main gallery, internationally acclaimed artist Dave Muller created a mixedmedia, site-specific installation that merges wall murals, large-scale paintings, three-dimensional works, and recorded music. Rock ‘n’ Old is funded in part by a FAB! Knight New Work Award from Funding Arts Broward and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. For Rock ‘n’ Old, Muller painted a mural of
a timeline, or flow chart, based on the evolution of rock ‘n’ roll as a genre. The artist complemented this mural with paintings up to 7 feet tall that replicate the spines of record album covers. These depictions of 10 to 20 album cover spines are rendered at the height of the person who has chosen them. Muller’s exhibition also includes a new work of top album choices selected by legendary rock performer Iggy Pop, who personally supplied the artist with his top picks. The paintings serve as portraits of individuals based on their musical taste, while exploring the relationship between
music, memory, and human experience. Muller, who has exhibited internationally for nearly two decades, also integrated six music stations and sculptural elements in the gallery. Represented by Blum & Poe Gallery (Los Angeles), Muller was their inaugural solo exhibition for the gallery’s new Tokyo space. In Bhakti Baxter’s Returning What Was Borrowed, familiar day-to-day objects take on new roles that no longer conform to the purposes of design but rather the inherent physical properties contained in the materials of these objects.
Baxter was born in Miami, where he currently lives and works. He has exhibited widely in the United States and internationally. This exhibition features sculptures Baxter made between 2011 and 2014 in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood, where he has been based for the past four years. This exhibit was selected as one of the top 10 exhibitions to experience in the Miami Herald’s 2014/2015 Season of the Arts guide. Michael Dean, who goes by the lowercase sobriquet dj yard, transformed the Center’s Project Room into a pop-up record store. Dean, proprietor of Hallandale-
based yardbird records, is one of the finest purveyors of vintage vinyl in South Florida. Dean spun for WBUS, aka The Magic Bus, when underground radio was in its infancy in South Florida. Annie Buckley’s interdisciplinary and participatory project The People’s Tarot includes original collages, a tarot deck and guidebook, two print editions, and readings. Buckley began The People’s Tarot as a means of integrating more intuition into what felt like an increasingly analytical practice. The artist is familiar with the Tarot and has owned four decks over the years. She integrates medita-
tion and research into her collage process to create a new deck with a humanist philosophy. Interaction and intuition are at the core of this project. Place the vinegar, blackberries, cinnamon, Five Spice Powder, peppercorns and sugar into the Vitamix container in the order listed and secure lid. 2. Select Hot Soups program. 3. Switch machine to Start and allow machine to complete programmed cycle. Use tamper if needed. 4. Select Variable 2 and remove lid plug. 5, Switch machine to Start and slowly drizzle oil through the lid plug opening until incorporated. 6. Replace lid plug and slowly increase speed to Variable 10. 7. Blend for an additional 20 seconds.
