What this landmark in western Hollywood has long represented is a solid educational environment that has turned out some impressive graduates through the years – many have gone on to much success in the working world. What happened the past two years could be traced back to this 2018 class of seniors. It was then head coach Marcello Rodriguez who brought in some talent and began to spike the program. After Rodriguez left and Jason Milgrom took the team to the next level, he then departed after one season. Last year, the work of Rodriguez and Milgrom paid off as the Lions, under first year head coach Dameon Jones, a Hallandale High graduate and former head coach, reached the state finals, only to lose to powerhouse Jacksonville Trinity Christian. With a year under his belt – and many of the players now his – Jones and the Lions were indeed a team that was ready to contend. This season, with losses to only 6A powerhouse Miami Central and No. 3 nationally rated American Heritage, it was certainly the time for everything to come together. “As someone who graduated from the school and has followed the program for years, it was really exciting for this to happen,” said John McCabe. “Something like this is not only great for the graduates and current students, but the City of Hollywood benefits as well.” Because the school is in the business of educating our future leaders, being able to add to the total school experience is important when recruiting students to come to the school. Allison Morales is going to make that decision next year – when her stepson will be leaving nearby Nativity. Even though choices are open, she admits that
having a sports balance is great for any student. “When I attended Hollywood Hills back in the 1990’s, we had very good sports programs, and even though I wasn’t really into it, I can remember going to a lot of games more for the social aspect,” Morales explained. “But that is what we want for both of our children.” SHIVERS LEAVES A WINNER Behind the running of Auburn commit Shaun Shivers (223 yards, 2 TDs) and key catches from Kentucky bound standout Akeem Hayes (4 catches, 89 yards), the Lions (11-2) won the game. With senior Daniel Longman booting the game winning field goal with time running down, the Lions indeed finished what they set out to do after losing to Trinity Christian. Defensively, junior Keontra Smith (13 tackles), Jake Hoffman (9 tackles) and Ahmaud Jordan (9 tackles), and senior C.J. Williams also added to the win with huge plays. “Our objective from the start of the season was to work hard and believe that things would work out,” Jones explained. “I cannot say enough about what this team accomplished this year.” LIONS HAVE THE TALENT TO BE BACK – AGAIN! Just as one season comes to an end for the Lions, there is a focus on 2018, and like the past two years, the expectation is high.

Being under ‘investigation’ is never good for any city
By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - Broward County’s OIG (Office of Inspector General) is no stranger to the City of Hallandale Beach. Many of our readers know that for the past years, we have been battling transparency within our City. Do not get me wrong, I believe that if people’s actions seem to be blatantly against the rules, there is a time and place for an investigation into those actions. We cannot use this office to politicized and create sound bites over “investigations”. Investigations in this sense mean the OIG is considering a matter. It does not mean there is criminal activity. It means the OIG is conducting their research and then the case is closed, or an opinion is presented in the form of findings. There may be criminal findings which are referred to the State Attorney. There may also be a finding considered an ethics issue and they are referenced to the State Commission on Ethics. In both cases it still does not mean the case is over. Personal attacks are truly not good - and when things are not true, they do more damage. The largest investigation of our CRA in the past, found that one of our community partners did in fact reimburse herself money thru her organization. This is not legal in anyway for a non-profit entity. She agreed to plead and take an intervention agreement that included $5,000 reimbursements to the City. It needs to be noted that not everyone can afford an attorney, nor do they want to go through the personal stress of a trial. During investigations, which should be respected and closed for communications and comments until they are completed, I had refrained from any comments. The OIG’s report for 2017 included the disposition of the case. Miss Brown who is well known for her great work with our children, teaching music and leadership skills to at risks children, did do something wrong. Was it intentional? I will never know, but having known her and her commitment to help children in my opinion - no. Did she use her car to transport kids on a trip? Yes. Did she use her own timeshare to house children for a trip? Yes. Former City Man-
ager Miller reviewed everything and weighed the crime against the punishment and waived the $5,000. In my opinion, Miss Brown’s personal loss to her own reputation, her professional life and her personal life was punishment enough. Her dedication to our needy children and her great programs were a beacon of light on Foster Road for years - when many would not even go into the Northwest Section, including some Commissioners, unless it was election time. The original CRA investigation resulted in a lengthy response from our former City Manager Miller that addressed allegations and opinions of the OIG. Politically motivated commissioners do not discuss this part of the final report. The weaknesses in our processes were addressed, and the ones she did not agree with were also addressed. After this OIG investigation started a year later, another “complaint” started. Another investigation was into a Series 2005 bond. Of course, we will never know who started it, but it was once again resolved, and the OIG agreed with the methodology implemented by City Manager Miller. Now the saga continues. Last year, yet another investigation has been taking place in the form of a forensics audit. I agreed to this audit as I want any issues to be resolved and the speculation that $7 million dollars is missing which is a lie and will be proven to be a lie hopefully will be laid to rest. We have been waiting for this audit which has been on the City Manager’s desk now since November. There will be a lengthy debate on its findings - I am sure. There will be findings, there always are. The question is are these issues due to human errors? Lack of internal controls? Staffing level issues? Lack of expertise within staff? I am sure all the above. It needs to be noted we are currently having staffing level issue within our Finance Department. We are down 6 people. Governments, just like every other business, can always be improved. I believe that it should be our goal. I also believe as I have stated publicly, management is an art not a science. Each manager has a dif-
ferent approach and way of addressing issues. When I studied accounting in college, the very first class our professors even asked the question art or science. Obviously, students said science due to working with numbers. Our professors said no art. There are many ways to tackle accounting and auditing. It comes down to the balance sheet with the numbers, but there a many rules and regulations open for interpretation. Many years ago when I was playing Jai Alai at the amateur court on 151 Street, a ball was served to me, which was slow, but exquisitely placed. Arching to the side wall making it a difficult, (but not impossible) serve to return. As I approached the ball, I said out loud, “Oh crap, I’m getting aced”. Sure enough, that’s what happened… The good Professor, who served the ball said; “Doc you should know better than that. You believed you were gonna miss, repeated that to yourself…, and
so you missed it. But I’ve seen you catch a ball like that many times before.”… He was right. My belief system, and inner dialogue doomed me right from the beginning of the point. Studies in psychology have shown that what we say to ourselves significantly influences our thoughts and behavior, and can have a direct effect on work and personal relationships. Therapies such as cognitive-behavioral, and neurolinguistic therapy focus on helping clients shed negative self-dialogue,

and maladaptive perceptions. Many people are not fully conscious of their negative self-dialogue, and are often astonished when it becomes clear to them how negatively, and irrationally they are programming themselves. Feelings of illogical self-worth, fear, and or hostility to others, can run rampant in folks suffering from anxiety and depression, and these constantly running sound bites of pathology may have been ingrained in one’s psyche for many, many years.
Freeing oneself from the chains of negative self-talk and perception has been a blessing for many people. Although I believe this to be more efficiently done with a competent therapist, the transformation to more positive thinking can be accomplished through self-dedication and good educational sources. An excellent source to consider are books written by Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D. He is considered the Godfather of psychological theory involving self-talk, and guided imagery.

Aventura - The City of Aventura is offering Tennis Camp during the winter break, which will be held from Tuesday, December 26, 2017 through Friday, January 5, 2018 at Founders Park. Registration is open. When school is out during the break, children ages 7-12 are eligible to learn and practice fundamental tennis skills such as serving, forehand, backhand, and volleying. Camp will be held Tuesday – Friday from 9:30 a.m. – noon at Founders Park located at 3105 NE 190 Street. The program’s weekly rate is $165 for residents and $198 for non-residents. Campers are advised to bring their own racquet, water and snack for the day. Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Gun Runner picked up the pace — especially the late pace — in last Sunday's workout at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans, motoring fiveeighths of a mile in1:00 4/5 in his preparation for Gulfstream Park's $16 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) Saturday, Jan. 27. The time matched the secondfastest of 64 works.
According to the Fair Grounds' clockers, Gun Runner started off with a leisurely first eighthmile in 13 1/5 seconds, going the next eighth-mile in 12 1/5 for a 25 2/5 quartermile. He went his next half in a flat 24 seconds for 49 2/5 half-mile, and his final eighth-mile in 11 2/5 seconds. He was timed galloping out six furlongs in 1:14 3/5 under exercise rider Angel Garcia.

Making Christmas Dinner Very Special This Year
Kick Up Your Traditional Dishes - Using Your Own Secret Ingredients • • • • •
While many families choose to eat out at a restaurant on Christmas, others still have that traditional home-cooked meal where family and friends come together for a memorable time. This year, you can be the hit of the holiday with some traditional foods - such as lamb, potatoes and vegetables - but prepared with your own touch. Try some of these dishes to please everyone and enjoy the holiday season. BAKED BRIE • 1 7-oz wheel brie • 1/4 c. apricot preserves • 1 to 2 tbsp. sliced almonds • Crusty bread for serving
Spread brie wheel with apricot preserves and scatter with almonds. Bake at 350 degrees F until soft and starting to ooze, 10 minutes. Serve with crusty bread. ROASTED LAMB • 1 lamb roast (3 to 4 lbs) • 8 garlic cloves, minced • 1 tbsp. freshly chopped rosemary
2 tsp. fresh thyme leaves 3 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, divided kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 3 lb. baby potatoes, halved if large
Preheat oven to 450º and place oven rack in lower third of oven. In a small bowl, mix together garlic, rosemary, thyme, and 1 tablespoon olive oil and season generously with salt and pepper. Rub all over lamb. In a large roasting pan, toss potatoes with remaining olive oil and season with more salt and pepper. Place lamb on top of potatoes and roast until the internal temperature is 145º, about 1 hour, 15 minutes. Let rest, then slice and serve. MASHED POTATOES • 3 lb. potatoes (about 4 large, combo of russets and Yukon golds) • kosher salt • 1 stick butter, plus 2 tablespoons for garnish • 1/2 c. milk • 1/2 c. sour cream • Freshly ground black pepper
In a large pot, cover potatoes with water and add a generous pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and cook until totally soft, 16 to18 minutes. Drain and return to pot. Use a potato masher to mash potatoes until smooth. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, melt butter and milk until warm. Pour over warm milk-butter mixture and stir until completely combined and creamy. ROASTED VEGETABLES • 3/4 lb. Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved • 2 large carrots, peeled and sliced into • 1/2” pieces • extra-virgin olive oil • 1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar • 1 tsp. chopped rosemary leaves • 1 tsp. chopped thyme leaves • 1/2 c. toasted pecans
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Scatter vegetables on a large sheet pan. Toss with enough olive oil to coat each piece, then toss with balsamic vinegar. Season with salt and pepper. Scatter herbs around the pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the vegetable are tender, shaking the pan halfway through. Before serving, toss roasted vegetables with pecan and cranberries. EASY SUGAR COOKIES • 1 stick plus 2 tbsp. salted butter • 1/3 c. sugar • 1 c. all-purpose flour • Sprinkles (optional)
Preheat oven to 325°. Use an electric mixer to cream the sugar and butter, whipping the two until the butter is almost white and the mixture is light and fluffy, almost like a slightly gritty frosting, then stir in flour. Form the cookies into 1" balls, placing them about 2 inches apart on a baking sheet. If using sprinkles, flatten cookies into a disc shape and top with sprinkles. Bake for 15 to 17 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies are lightly golden.
