Tragedy in Connecticut stirs strong feelings!
The tragedy in Newtown last Friday was something that brought tears to very one's eyes - as youngsters were killed by yet another "sick" individual. In the hours after the tragic scene in Connecticut, as it did at the mall last week, or the church a few weeks before, the movement to make guns illegal, have been heard loud and clear. Take the guns off the streets and you won't have these problems. While I respect and agree with those who feel the way they do about the gun laws, I am also here to tell you that there is no way guns will ever be controlled. How can they be? There are 300,000 million on the

streets as we speak with no end close to being in sight. It is a battle that has been waged for decades and decades and decades - and it will not be resolved in this or any other lifetime. It's not a reality. If you just sit back and think what type of mountain that controlling guns and which kinds are being made,
it's far too much to climb. This is a time when emotions are highest. This is when politicians and lawmakers come together to quiet everyone by saying they are willing to work on a solution. Come on! What have they been doing all these years - when the same things have been happening around the country? They can't stop guns from being made and distributed and they know it. We all know it. The reality is that everyone has the right to own a gun - if they meet certain restrictions. Those restrictions are quite dicey. Who's to say that Mr. Good Citizen, a proud –––––––––––––––––––– BLUSTEIN, Page 11A

Dental implants restore missing teeth to their most natural condition. The concept behind dental implants is exactly the same as natural teeth. Implant teeth, like natural teeth, anchor to the jawbone. This is the most important difference between implant teeth and other methods of teeth replacement such as dentures and bridges. –––––––––––––––––– BOBADILLA, 8A

‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’
With the Connecticut tragedy, Mayors against Illegal Guns continues to fight HALLANDALE BEACH - The horrific tragedy in Connecticut is still incomprehensible to many of us. The senseless murder of innocent children in their classrooms has impacted our country on many levels. The mass killing has shed light on many issues that our country's leaders and some citizens seem to simply ignore; gun control, school security and mental illness. Since 2006 I have been a member of Mayors against Illegal Guns. Founded by Mayor Bloomberg from the City of New York and Mayor Menino of Boston, this group is comprised of Mayors from around the country. MAIG has grown to 700 plus Mayors. My interest began during a US Mayors Conference in 2004 when I, and many other Mayors, signed on to support extending the ban on the sale of assault weapons and the ban on magazines holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition. Regretfully, the ban was lifted and our cities began to see an influx of AK 47’s and weapons that were intended for war on our streets. A new war began on our police officers, innocent by standers and gang on gang violence. Ever since 2006 MAIG's Mayors have rallied around these common goals: protecting their communities by
Mayor Joy Cooper
holding gun offenders and irresponsible gun dealers accountable; demanding access to trace data that is critical to law enforcement efforts to combat illegal gun trafficking; and working with legislators to fix gaps, weaknesses and loopholes in the law that make it far too easy for criminals and other prohibited purchasers to get guns. The goals remain the same. Laws on the books and immediate actions to address gun related violence include: * Asking the President to make the confirmation of a new Director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms a higher priority than it's been so far. It has been six years since the ATF has had a confirmed Director. Mayor Bloomberg urged the President to make a recess appointment to fill the vacancy. * Asking the Justice Department to prosecute people who fail their gun background check after lying on the form a Federal felony under
existing law. In 2009, out of the more than 71,000 cases referred by the FBI, the Justice Department prosecuted just 77 of them. * Thirdly, the coalition is asking the President to immediately lift the Tiahrt gag order, which keeps the public in the dark about gun traffickers; specifically, who they are and how they operate.
Proposed new laws include: * Legislation now pending in Congress, the Fix Gun Checks Act (H.R. 1781/S. 436), would require a criminal background check for all gun sales. Current Federal Law requires licensed gun dealers to conduct checks on buyers, but private sellers, who often sell guns online and at gun shows, can sell with no background check at all. The loophole is enormous. An estimated 40% of all U.S. gun sales are private sales and not subject to the Federal background check; giving easy access to guns for felons, other criminals, the mentally ill, drug abusers and other individuals currently prohibited from purchasing guns by existing federal law. * Some members of the coalition also have called on Congress to ban deadly, militarystyle assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, many of which
were previously banned under the now expired Federal Assault Weapons Ban. Learn more about our goals at www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org. The Mayors are also asking for every citizen to sign on to DEMADAPLAN.org. I am asking every reader to take a moment and sign on. We need to stand up and demand action. Congress needs to act on common sense laws and back the current laws on the books. The next issue is school safety. Florida is a patchwork of different rules district by district when it comes to school security. Some districts provide school security through their own staff and others like Broward reimburse cites that provide the service. School Resources Officers have been a topic for many years in Broward. I worked with the first committee tasked to work with the School Board on a fair cost sharing model for our SROs. Currently Hallandale Beach has SROs that are in the schools, but not on a full time basis. Some cites have schools and others do not. We have taken the position that we will continue to support this partnership with our schools. With funding cuts many cities are taking a second look at what they perceive as a school board issue. What is worse is many
elementary schools in our district do not have SRO's. It is time for another hard look on how we protect our schools. The state must also play a role in this problem. With continued cuts passed down and unfunded mandates facing districts, there must be some state relief; not another unfunded mandate passed down. Our city has done its part, but we should not be forced to pay in full for something other districts are provided. The last issue is mental health. There is a hidden unspoken truth about the state of mental health services in our country. Providers are over worked, resources are limited and in many cases insurance companies will not pay for much needed treatments and psychological services. It is ironic that the first week in December after a 13 year process of analysis and debate, the American Psychiatrists Association revised the Diagnostic Manual for Mental Disorders. This is the bible of mental illness and the book is used to code mental illness. The codes are utilized for many different reasons; the main being medical billing and reimbursement. The changes in codes helped a bit but that is still being debated. The stark reality is many
people still do not have basic insurance and even those with insurance often learn that the treatments they need are not eligible for insurance reimbursement. There will not be one simple solution to prevent what occurred. It may be out of reach and unrealistic to think we can prevent tragedies of this nature. The President is right. We still need to come together and change what we can. Another thing that every person can do is “when you see something, say something”. This message was part of my state of the city last year “”See Something, Say Something” If you witness child abuse, do not turn away. Report it. If you witness senior abuse, drug dealers, vandalism; any crime; report it. If you want to remain anonymous call the city’s Tip Line 954-4571404. Let us all work together to make 2013 a safer better year for all of us especially our future, our children Wishing you a Happy Safe Holiday Season! And do not forget sign on to DemandAPlan.org

From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– in to an optometrist for an emergency visit to be treated for a scratched cornea. The practitioner told him he had cataracts. “But he said they were still quite small, and I probably wouldn’t have a problem for awhile,” he recalls. But then about 1 1/2 years ago, Paulino ordered a pair of new glasses from an optical chain store. “When I put them on, everything was fuzzy,” he says. He asked for, and got, a refund. A few months later, after having a successful hip replacement, he returned to the place that had treated his scratched cornea to get a different pair of new glasses. But the practitioner told him new glasses wouldn’t help him see better because his cataracts had worsened significantly and needed to be removed. When someone he trusted recommended Dr. Braverman, Paulino made an appointment. He’s glad he did. “I was told he’s the best,” Paulino says. “He did a great job.” Every day, Paulino is enjoying the experience of not having to wear glasses anymore. “My sight is 100 percent better,” he says. “And I have a driver’s license that says ‘no restrictions.’” Also as an added benefit, Paulino's wife Virginia, had cataract surgery by Dr. Braverman the very same day as Paulino! According to Dr. Braverman, she also now enjoys much better vision because of the cataract surgery.
WHAT ARE CATARACTS A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses.
CATARACT SURGERY: WHAT TO EXPECT Cataract surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. An artificial lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, and new upgraded premium lens designs. Eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days.
The Braverman Eye Center is located at 1935 East Hallandale Beach Boulevard, Hallandale Beach, Fl. 33009.
If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure.

BROWARD DENTAL IMPLANTS & COSMETIC CENTER The advantages of Dental Implants Bobadilla
From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––– Traditionally missing teeth were replaced with either dentures or bridges. Today, replacing teeth with dentures or bridges is no longer the best option or even an acceptable one. Dental problems associated with these kinds of restorations are complex and varied. To make a bridge for 1 missing tooth, the 2 adjacent teeth should be drilled down to half the size. This is a destructive process and results in tooth sensitivity and decay on those 2 teeth. In reality 2 healthy teeth are destroyed to replace one missing tooth. The final restoration is a 3 tooth bridge that connects one drilled down tooth to another, with one artificial tooth in the middle. Using dental implant technology, the same missing tooth can be easily replaced with one dental implant, and without any damage to any other teeth in the mouth. The restored implant tooth is individually supported and is not connected to adjacent teeth. Dentures are also

avoid vegetables, fruits, nuts, meat and other essential nutrients that are important for their health and well-being. This results in systemic disorders such as digestive and cardiovascular disease. Because dentures are bulky and cover a lot of surfaces in the mouth, including the palate (roof of the mouth), they interfere with speech and block the sensation of taste. Dentures often have a clicking sound during chewing which may be embarrassing for people who have them. People wearing dentures should remove them from their mouth after each use to clean them. This reminds them every day that they have artificial teeth. The emotional and psychological impact of this is profound. Use of denture adhesives to hold dentures in the mouth is quite uncomfortable and has an adverse physical and psychological impact. These are some of the problems associ-
ated with dentures, but by far the most serious problem is facial bone loss and premature aging. This bone loss results in collapse of facial structures, and make the person look much older. DENTAL IMPLANT ADVANTAGES ARE… • With dental implants you can eat all the food you like. Eating with implant teeth is just like natural teeth. Your diet will not be limited to just soft food. • Implant teeth feel, function, and look like natural teeth. • Unlike bulky dentures, implant teeth have the exact size and anatomy as natural teeth • Unlike bridges, implant teeth are not attached to, and do not damage other natural teeth. • Maintenance of facial bone. Dental implants prevent bone loss. This is due to stimulation of the jawbone by the chewing forces transmitted by inserted implants. • Improved chewing
ability. Dental implants provide a solid and stable foundation for new teeth. Patients are able to eat without worrying about moving or loose dentures.
Improved phonetics. Eliminating bulky, loose dentures, improves phonetics significantly. Dental implants feel like natural teeth and patients actually forget they have missing teeth. Improved psychological health. Having dental implants is like having a new set of natural teeth. With all the comfort of eating, talking, and socializing without the fear of embarrassment, the individual’s self image is tremendously enhanced. Improved esthetics. By preventing bone loss, often through bone repair and replacement, implant procedures significantly improve facial esthetics Regained chewing awareness. Dental implants directly transmit chewing forces to the jawbone, which helps
patient’s chewing awareness. With dentures, the roof of the mouth (palate) and all gum surfaces are covered, which prevents taste and chewing reception. Maintenance of muscles of chewing and facial expression. A sound, healthy bone structure is vital for intact overlying facial muscles. By preventing facial bone loss, dental implants maintain the integrity of facial muscles. Increased retention and stability of dentures. With dental implants, loose, instable dentures can effectively be anchored to jawbone and provide stability and retention. By using dental implants, the use of denture adhesives can be eliminated. The long term success rate of dental implants is impressively high (close to 100%) From the replacement of a single missing tooth to extensive reconstruction and replacement of several or even all teeth, we offer the healthiest and most intelligent treatment solutions.

Sick people are driven by the knowledge that they can go down in a famed blaze of glory. That's why mental health is important to at least start with. As we learned after

From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––– and respected resident of the community, starts to develop mental issues - where people notice, but never say anything because they don't want to get involved. While the issue is certainly making guns - assault weapons in particular - the answer and reality - is that it will not stop. We have been through that already. So, with that in mind, and knowing that the process to cut back the production of making these guns will take a lifetime, maybe we can tackle what the real issue is here. The common denominator in any of these mass killings has always been how the person who would commit such a horrific act was a "bit weird". Most who talked about these killers in Oregon, Colorado, Virginia and in Connecticut
as being "different" and "off a little". As President Obama stood before the nation proclaimed that this has got to stop, the reality is that this has become more of a mental health issue. We, as a nation, are paying enough attention to the fact that the real problem is with the person and not the guns. You may not agree with it, but that is not my problem. I have no time to waste on hunting for solutions that will never come. This is a reality and it is played out in every horrific crime scene. Spending billions to stop guns from being made is like tossing that money in the ocean. While the strong feelings and beliefs are there especially now as we continue to watch those families bury 6 and 7 year olds - the reality is that more money should be invested in mental health. "I see people all the time who need some (professional) help," Cohen said. "Are they capable of killing people? I am not sure, but at least, you try and find that out." Before you jump to the conclusion that we cannot profile everyone and turn them in, that is not what the issue is here and you know it. There are indeed people who we all know that may have a problem down the line. Instead of laughing it off, do something about it. It's a whole lot easier and more realistic than banning any weapons. Speaking of weapons, do you really think that if someone wanted to kill, not having a gun would stop them? Is that what you believe? People can get poisons, knives, grenades or anything else destructive and do more damage than with just one gun! Also, there is nothing wrong with school security. Adrienne Arsht Center presents a new holiday production ‘The Nutcracker, A Magical New Play’
SPOTLIGHT ON STAGE
For the third consecutive season, the Arsht Center and the Theatre of Chicago will partner in this new holiday production written by Jake Minton and Phillip Klapperich, featuring original music by Jefferson Award-Winning composer, Kevin O’Donnell. “The Nutcracker, A Magical New Play,” is not a ballet, but a brand new play set in a modern day atmosphere that is quite uplifting and very emotional based on one loving family’s recovery from a terrible unexpected loss. Originated from the original E.T.A. Hoffman Christmas story, the play centers on young Clara’s journey to save Christmas and bring her broken family back together, making this production a great holiday story with a different take on the original classic tale. This contemporary holiday theatre production weaves together riveting dialogue, astonishing puppetry, original songs and a spellbinding spectacle to tell a heartwarming story of magic and hope. South Florida fans may believe they know the classic story, but this re-imagined tale is far from the ballet. This “Nutcracker, A Magical New Play” is a story about family for all generations. Now on stage in the Carnival Studio Theatre at the Arsht Center through December 30, 2012. Tickets are $45 at the box office, located at 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami. For show schedules, call: (305) 949-6722. Or: visit on-line at www.arshtcenter.org. His version became a hit on both the pop and R & B charts, which was rare during that time for an R & B artist. It also gained the number 183 spot in the Rolling Stone’s magazine’s of "500 Greatest Songs of All Time. " In the 1950's, King became one of the most important names in R & B music, accumulating an impressive list of hits including “3 O’Clock Blues,” “You Know You Love Me,” “Woke up This Morning,” “Please Love Me,” “ Whole Lotta Love” and too many more to mention. In 1962, King signed with ABC-Paramount Records, which finally led to his “Live at the Regal” album recorded at the Regal Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. When Julie and Stephen were forced to leave the showboat because someone called the police to report their marriage was illegal, due to Julie being of mixed blood, which at that time, their marriage was forbidden. They were replaced by the Captain‘s daughter, Magnolia Hawks and her boyfriend Gaylord Ravenal, a compulsive gambler. They fall in love and marry, leave the boat and move to Chicago. Give up new year’s resolutions, but don’t give up on committing to doing something great
COMMITMENT IS THE NEW RESOLUTION
(BPT) - The tradition of new year's resolutions has been around 4,000 years, when Babylonians saw fit to start the year off right by making promises to the gods. Today, such promises are a media phenomenon, designed to be broken. "One reason most new year's resolutions usually fail before the end of January is because people haven't truly bought into change," says Bahram Akradi, CEO of Life Time, The Healthy Way of Life Company. "We can change the course of our lives for the better without the need for a contrived tradition." That's why Life Time has launched the Commitment Day movement. By pledging a commitment online at www.commitmentday.co m, anyone can join this national movement when hundreds of thousands of people wake up on New Year's Day to participate in a simultaneous walk/run in one of 30 cities nationwide. Alan Ali, 31, of Raleigh, N.C., will be running with his sister, uncle, and brother-inlaw because they've been inspired by Ali, who once weighed 480 pounds and has lost more than 100 pounds over the last three years
from my goals/resolutions/aspirations as my very next choice, my life changed," says Birnberg. Birnberg, who has a Twitter following of approximately16,000 people, knows a thing or two about how important community can be for reaching fitness goals. "I'm a firm believer in everything in our lives taking a village, and this virtual village with all its residents, or accountability partners, changes the sense of isolation old school resolutions give," says Birnberg. Commitment Day founder, Akradi put it this way: "Instead of feeling forced to do something you think you must do, now you can make a change for the better because you want to. Instead of feeling isolated with your intentions, now you can be bolstered with the
by eating healthy and exercising. That progress didn't result from a resolution. "Resolutions never worked for me because at that time in my life I didn't want it bad enough and I wasn't ready to make changes to reach my weight-loss goals," says Ali. He now prefers to set goals throughout the year, which he says will help him get his weight below 300 pounds by the end of 2013. "Commitment Day is more than just planning to do the 5K run/walk on January 1st," Ali says. "It's about committing to do something and working toward that goal right now. Anyone can say I 'will' do something, but its takes a committed person to put in the time to train for the goal that they set for themselves." Carla Birnberg, 43, a personal trainer in Austin, Texas, and fitness blogger is also participating in Commitment Day with her husband and daughter. She says people are eager to make bold changes at new year because the world seems so fraught with possibility.-The problem, she adds, is that they don't set themselves up for success. "Once I realized I'm never as far
support of people making similar commitments. Instead of starting the new year feeling like you're making sacrifices, now you can start the new year celebrating life." After the holiday revelry and the high spirits of the season, why should we follow ancient Babylonian customs that bring an end to the fun with a self-de-
example for her husband and 3-month-old daughter. "It just seems to set the tone for the whole year. Commitment Day takes it one step further because it's a national movement." To get $5 off the cost of registration for a Commitment Day walk/run use code "CORP0598" when you sign up.
feating "promise" in the form of a new year's resolution anyway? "I've always felt that waking up early on New Year's Day and going out for a run is a far better way to start the year than hungover and sick," says Jill Ormond Whitaker, 34, a new mom in Las Vegas, who has committed to live a healthy and balanced life and provide a good

Hallandale Beach hosts eighth annual holiday event

apologize to the police officers who I did not mention. There is rarely a charitable event where Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper and City Commissioner Bill Julian are not in attendance as they walked around the store with some very fortunate children as well as recently retired commissioner, the venerable Dorothy “Dottie” Ross. One would be hard pressed to find three other adults as dedicated to the city as these. Public Works employee Bob Kahl was tapped to play the role of Santa Claus as he received many requests for presents from the kids at Hometown Buffet during breakfast and at Walmart. Naturally, names like Joe Kessel, Barbara Southwick and Jonathan Carrillo who are fixtures at most civic activities were on hand helping some lucky boys and girls enjoy the happiest of holidays. The affable Lavar Miller who works as the store manager for the neighboring Winn Dixie at the Diplomat Mall was very helpful directing folks and often donates food and beverages to community events. Harry Escandon worked tirelessly at the event directing shoppers to the various cashiers and emptying the carts at the register expediting the checkout. Harry is one of those individuals who knows no limit with his time and charitable donations.
have witnessed the genuine devotion that the police officers have for the safety and benevolence of our children and though television usually portrays the violent part of their job making arrests, they take great joy in mentoring our youth through sports and any activity that will keep teens from the perils of street life. Congratulations Hallandale Beach for supporting another great event for the kids. Stephen P. Cummings is a Past LT.

The city of Hallandale Beach is certainly deserving of a modest accolade as the city is only 4.4 square miles, yet the residents and merchants continually rally to support the youth programming especially with the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League. Major Cowley commented that it can be frustrating asking the same merchants for financial support, but whether Shop With a Cop, the P.A.L. Comedy Show, the annual poker tournament or the 5K and 10 K run at Gulfstream, the sponsors surface making all these events so successful. A fairly new face to Hallandale Beach is public relations director, Peter Dobens. Peter can be seen at every event that the city sponsors taking photos and sharing the great work of the city. As an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach the past eighteen years and a board of director for the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League and a columnist for the SunTimes, I

By Stephen Cummings There is an old cliché that states that “you can not help everybody”, but the Hallandale Beach Police Department impacted the lives of 125 needy children last Saturday as they had the opportunity to spend $100 at the Hallandale Beach Walmart at the eighth annual Shop with a Cop. Police Officers and civic leaders from the community gathered to escort these eager youngsters through a maze of shoppers and aisles as shiny new bicycles and computer games filled the carts of these excited shoppers. I was one of the many adults assisting as I was assigned three children to supervise and the warm glowing smiles on their faces as we checked out at the register will be long remembered. This event would be impossible without the generosity of Walmart and sponsors who include Gulfstream Park, Mardi Gras Gaming and Casino, Harry Escandon from AAAA Crosstown Towing, Invicta Watches, Dr. Joseph A. Amunategui II, Hometown Buffet and The Advocacy Law Firm in Hallandale Beach. Sergeant Ricky Buoni and Major Ken Cowley from the Hallandale Beach Police Department complete the vast majority of the logistical planning, but many of the brave men and women in blue were on the scene to support this worthy cause. Four steps to combat hearing loss: the silent epidemic
(BPT) - An estimated 275 million people across the globe can't hear clearly all the sounds they love. These people suffer from hearing loss, which the World Health Organization lists as the No. 1 sensory disability in the world. Some people never had their hearing, as they were born deaf, but the majority had something happen along the way that took it from them. Infectious diseases like meningitis, measles, mumps and chronic ear infections, as well as head and ear injuries, and aging all can contribute to hearing loss. But perhaps the most common cause is excessive noise. Whether it's a one-time exposure to an intense, "impulse" sound, like gunfire, or by repeated exposure
to loud sounds over time, like machinery at work, noise has the potential to rob people of their hearing. The effects of hearing loss extend well beyond having to turn up the television. It strains a person's ability to understand conversations, which can cause problems and misunderstandings at work and at home. Hearing loss also leads to isolation from family, friends and the environment."The good news is

noise-induced hearing loss is preventable," says Dr. Laurie Wells, audiologist in 3M's hearing protection business. "So many people could be spared from it, if they just took a few easy steps." Step 1: Wear hearing protection The most important step to preventing hearing loss is to wear hearing protection. "There are many great hearing protection options, but sometimes it's a challenge to know which to choose and how and when to wear it correctly," says Wells. "Hearing protection is now available that is comfortable, fits well, and includes options to enhance communication - like microphones and two-way radio connections for people who need them." Step 2: Be mindful around the clock Sounds louder than 85 decibels (dBA) are more common than people might think. Prolonged exposure to these highlevel sounds can permanently damage your hearing, and cause ringing in the ears, along with other symptoms. Most people don't carry decibel meters, so it's good to know where those sound levels can occur. Some examples include:
An estimated 275 million people across the globe can't hear clearly all the sounds they love. These people suffer from hearing loss, which the World Health Organization lists as the No. 1 sensory disability in the world.
* Attending a football game (100 to 120 dBA) * Using a leaf blower or chainsaw (95-120 dBA) * Riding a motorcycle (80-110 dBA) * Using a lawn mower (82-103 dBA) * Attending a rock concert (90-120 dBA) * Listening to a personal music player (75-114 dBA) * Shooting firearms (140 to 165 dBA) * Watching a movie at the theater (72-104 dBA)
Hearing these sounds occasionally, for a limited time, isn't a major threat to hearing. But repeated exposure to loud sounds can cause hearing damage over time. Many people - like mine workers, police officers, construction workers, farmers and others, work in noise that is 85 dBA or higher
every day on the job. As a result, noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common occupational diseases and the second most self-reported occupational illness, according to National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Step 3: Reduce the volume or increase distance Work-related noise might be unavoidable, but many times, you
can be in control of the noise around you. Whenever possible, select quieter vacuums, chain saws, leaf blowers, power tools, etc. Also, be aware that the volume controls on portable entertainment devices can exceed 110 dBA - levels that may be hazardous if you listen for many hours a day. Lower the volume and limit how long you listen to them. If you aren't able to turn down loud sounds you encounter, take a few steps back from the source of the loud sound. Even a few feet of distance between you and a loud sound can lower the decibel levels that hit you. Step 4: Take the hearing pledge Make a commitment to wear hearing protection so you can continue to enjoy all the sounds you love. 3M has launched the Hearing Pledge. Go to www.hearingpledge.co m and commit to wearing your hearing protection. Those who pledge can enter a drawing to win a free iPod touch mobile digital device, equipped with audiolimiting headphones that keep the sound level at or below 82 dBA.

Tips for going nuts with your holiday recipes
(BPT) - Whether you're roasting them over an open fire or cooking them into your holiday favorites, nuts can be used to enhance almost any recipe. You'd be hard-pressed to find an ingredient with more versatility, as nuts can be used to create a flavor accent or to provide some extra crunch and texture while keeping dishes fresh and light. Whether you're using almonds, pecans or roasted peanuts, the possibilities are limitless. For celebrity chef Alex Guarnaschelli, regular judge on Food Network's Chopped and executive chef at The Darby and Butter in New York, the holiday entertaining season provides a great opportunity to share some of her favorite recipes. "I'm a chef, but I'm also a mom and I want time to spend with my family during the holidays," says Guarnaschelli. "Nuts are one of those special ingredients that give a dish an extra special touch, but still allow me to keep it simple." This holiday season Guarnaschelli has developed a series of exclusive recipes and tips to show at-home cooks how ingredients like nuts
can easily create a chefcaliber dish. * Healthy holiday snack: Nuts add wonderful flavor and texture when mixed into recipes, but they can also be a healthy snack—season nuts with a little cayenne and quickly roast them in a little olive or nut oil. Try using the Fisher Nuts Freshness Seal Bag - it has a re-sealable closure that will keep the leftover nuts fresh after the package is opened.* Simply delicious dessert: For a great addition to your holiday dessert table, melt some sugar in a pan until golden brown and stir in some nuts. Transfer the
mixture to a baking sheet to cook and then break into pieces for a quick and simple nut brittle. * Top off a side dish: Parsley and basil are great flavors to finish many holiday dishes. Try chopping parsley with some Fisher almonds for added texture and taste. * Spruced-up spice rub: For this year's holiday roast, try adding some ground nuts to the spice rub. The nuts can mellow some of the heat from the spice and add needed richness to the mix. BRAISED PARSNIPS WITH MAPLE SYRUP AND FISHER PECANS
"I grew up eating braised carrots with brown sugar, so I always associate them with the holidays," says Guarnaschelli. "I love the freshness and unusual sweetness parsnips have and they seem to naturally gravitate to pecans. It's also great to feature pecans in other places besides pecan pie for the holidays." 8 medium parsnips, ends trimmed and thoroughly peeled 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin seeds, lightly crushed 1 teaspoon coriander
salt and add the maple syrup. Continue to cook the parsnips over medium heat for another minute of two. Add some water and continue cooking the parsnips until they are tender when pierced with the tip of a knife. Parsnips can vary in size so feel free to add a splash of water to finish the cooking process, if needed. Stir the nuts back into the parsnips. Serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6.
seeds, lightly crushed 1/2 cup Fisher Pecan Halves Kosher salt 1/2 cup maple syrup 2-3 cups water Place the peeled parsnips on a flat surface and cut them in half lengthwise. Heat a skillet large enough to hold the parsnip halves in a single layer and add half the butter. When the butter melts and starts to get brown, add the pecans, cumin and coriander. Stir in the pecans and "toast" them with the spices for a minute. Strain out the pecans and set aside. Add the parsnip halves and remaining butter to the pan. Season with
