Growing up in West Palm Beach, Dr. Martha Jacobson remembers a childhood that was not the easiest for her. Born with amblyopia, Dr. Jacobson’s early years came with an emotional scar of having to wear eye patches, use drops and deal with 20/200 vision and the ridicule of her peers in school. Amblyopia is the medical term used when the vision in one of the eyes is reduced because the eye and the brain are not working together properly. The eye itself looks normal, but it is not being used normally because the brain is favoring the other eye. This condition is also sometimes called lazy eye. Because her father was an op-

tometrist, and was always there for support and to provide knowledge, it didn’t make it any easier that she was getting bullied in school, but it did provide the information and understanding of the disease. “Things were rough,” the 71-yearold psychologist pointed out. “I never knew anything but poor vision in that one eye - while having perfect vision in the other. It was the way I went through life.” Dr. Jacobson’s father felt that wearing a patch would eventually allow the weak eye to get stronger. That has long been the thinking when treating the Braverman, Page 3A

disease. As the years moved on, Dr. Jacobson always had in the back of her mind that the one good eye was the only link to her sight. While it was scary, it was indeed a reality. It wasn’t until the last year, after developing cataracts in both eyes that Dr. Jacobson began to start to worry about losing sight. It was something that her Hollywood Optometrist Dr. Justine Chen was concerned with as well. Initially sending her to one ophthalmologist and then finally to the person that helped to change her life. “When I found out that I needed the procedure done, you think about it and then say, wow, that is my only good eye,” she recalled. “You are really apprehensive because that one eye is all you really have.” When Dr. Jacobson went to her first appointment, it was a huge turnoff to wait three hours and actually something that she feared. It was an assembly line doctor with no personal touch, and being around the profession all of her life, with her father, she knew there had to be a better experience waiting. “My sister had the cataract surgery and suggested someone else to go see,” Dr. Jacobson explained. “That was when everything changed.” From the first visit to the Braverman Eye Center in Hallandale Beach, she was sold. The professional manner in which the staff took care of her - to the consultation with Dr. Stanley Braverman, this was something that was getting a lot more comfortable. Not only was the cataract surgery with Multifocal lenses going to be performed on her good eye, but she was going to have it done on the other eye as well. “Dr. Braverman sat me down and went over everything - and when I had questions, he was there with the answers,” Dr. Jacobson pointed out. “He knew exactly what was going through my mind - with the good eye and being apprehensive about the surgery.” Performed in September, Dr. Jacobson is still working and doing what she’s done all of her adult life. But now, with vision that she never thought would be this great, she is living life and seeing everything clearly - in both eyes. Said Dr. Braverman, "Her father did a great job treating her amblyopia! After surgery, she recovered 20/30 uncorrected vision in the right amblyopic eye, and 20/25 uncorrected vision in her left eye. With multifocal implants that I used, she sees 20/20 to read without glasses!" “I am not one who uses the word amazing too much, but my approach to life is much different than it was just two months ago,” Dr. Jacobson concluded. What Are Cataracts? A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range. Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. If your eye qualifies, the second option, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery can now be done using state of the art Femtosecond Laser technology to assist with parts of the cataract surgical procedure, including softening up the cloudy camera lens. This reduces the amount of high frequency ultrasound needed. Laser As-

sisted Cataract Surgery takes a delicate procedure and refines it even more, so that the surgical precision is unparalleled. The computer-guided accuracy of the laser compliments your doctor’s skills with today’s latest technology. An artificial man made lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. There are several types of high quality premium vision lenses that can be used, giving you potentially better results than with a standard basic lens. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, and Dr. Braverman's newly trademarked LACE™ procedure. The LACE™ procedure, if you are deemed a candidate, can nearly always guarantee that the patient will need no glasses for distance vision, and no glasses for distance or near vision if a multifocal lens implant is used. At the Braverman Eye Center, we are proud to offer the advanced AMO CATALYS® Precision Laser System, for unsurpassed Femtosecond Laser Assisted cataract surgery performance. About Dr. Stanley Braverman Dr. Stanley Braverman is a Voluntary Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine and the Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital/Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Hiring a new City Manager will take time By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - During the special meeting, last week, the city commission disposed of the rules of our meetings. We can do so by majority vote. I attended the meeting by phone due to a family emergency in Philadelphia and Commissioner Sanders was also unable to attend due to a prior commitment. During the beginning of the meeting all rules were put aside and it was decided to allow commission communications and motions during a special meeting which was only intended to discuss adopting a resolution to suspend the city manager. I asked for a motion that was seconded to place on the December 7th meeting a discussion to establish the procedure and guidelines to hire a new city attorney. While it was agreed, we needed to begin the process the second was withdrawn and a vote was not taken. I also recommended that we do the same with the city manager. The vice chair while in agreement wanted to wait until after the agenda item was heard. The items were agreed to and placed on the agenda. Since I have been on the commission we have hired four city managers. Everyone left for various reasons and hired differently. Three were promoted

from within the organization and one was hired externally. When we went out to hire we used a special consultant to facilitate the process. Consultants are often used since there are some that specialize in this field of expertise. The discussion to establish the hiring procedure mirrored what we did using a consultant but with some very significant changes. The first was not to hire a consultant to facilitate the process. The consultant did cost 18,000 but buy using one they do thorough background checks including all research on experience. The second was to condense the job posting time for only two weeks typically posting are for 4 weeks. Four weeks is important due timing around the holidays. The third was to reduce the overall hiring process including evaluation for minimum requirements, background checks, interviews and final selection to two weeks. The other change was to eliminate the publics opportunity of a meet and greet the top finalists to share their views. This item was discussed this past Wednesday night so I cannot tell you at this point if the commission will pass this procedure. It is my hope the commission will at a minimum expand the time frame and consider a facilita-

tor. We currently have two excellent deputy city managers. Nydia Rafols has been with the city many years and has been the acting city manager in the past and budget chair. She has extensive knowledge with finance, the CRA and day to day operations. She is also having her accreditation. Deputy City Manager Frastai also has been with the city many years and has knowledge of the budget capital projects and is also an attorney. Regretfully neither wants to apply to become the city manager. To date I have not been approached by any other directors or staff member interested in applying. Applying to become a city a manager is a decision that one does not make overnight. As a professional once your name is in the running it will impact one’s current position, family and future positively or negatively. The same goes for the commission. The new city manager will oversee day to day operations with over 400 employees and manage a budget over 100,000,000 dollars. I am hoping the commission decides at best to extend the process so we have the time to make the best decision and the public has the opportunity for input. For now, we are in good hands. The City Commission appointed Deputy

Frastai as Acting City Manager. I want to publicly congratulate Jenifer! I have worked with her since she has been in the city attorney’s office. She was promoted to deputy under Mike Goods leadership. She is a bright young woman and well versed in law and city business. We also appointed Deputy Attorney Michele McKinney as Acting City Attorney. I have also watched her work over the years under the City Attorney David Jove and Attorney Lynn Whitfield. She has sat for meetings in the absence of the city attorneys and has done a stellar job. Congratulations to her as well! While in disagreement with the commission on the recent firings it is a blessing to have had leadership that hired excellent employees to be able to take over the helm. lieve that with all that has been done, especially here on the beach, things will really be a lot of fun,” Hailey said. “You can see this past weekend was the start of what we hope will be a very active next few months.” As thousands poured on to Hollywood Beach Saturday night for the annual Candy Candy Parade, there was a feeling in the air from locals and visitors alike. Being a warm weather destination automatically puts you in a great place. But these communities, which do what they can for six months a year to survive financially, embrace the boost in economy. “There is no blueprint for success year round,” Bruce explained. “You have to be creative and give specials that will attract a flow of customers. Even this time of year when you do have larger crowds, you can never take anything for granted.” Seth Renzi and his family were in south Florida last weekend for Art Basel and also to take in the first weekend of Gulfstream Park’s winter/spring schedule that kicked off on Saturday. Living in Syracuse, N.Y. where the weather was a chilly 23 over the weekend, Renzi was delighted to have the chance to wear a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, but was also thankful that for the week they are spending in this area. “We haven’t been here in three years, so it was great to get back,” Renzi said. “There are few places that you can come and go swimming and walk around like it’s summer in December. That’s what makes this

area of the country so special.” Weekend Was Busy Indeed Whether it was at Gulfstream Park, the Candy Cane Parade or many other destinations, the first week of December was indeed something very impressive here in this region. Gulfstream Park, Mardi Gras and the Casino @ Dania Beach all had some major events taking place from racing to big winners in the casino and at the track - to the appearance of the 1980s rock group Styx, which performed in Dania Beach, it kicked off the season. South Florida Sun Times Newspaper President Craig Farquhar has been through many “seasons” in this area, and while the summers are always going to be rough for everyone, it’s these months through April - that have made this a perfect time for residents, business owners and visitors. With so much competition for the entertainment dollar, Farquhar admits that even though many area restaurants and shops are seeing more and more traffic, this is the time when everyone becomes more creative. “This time of year, it’s always about the great deals you can offer at your business,” Farquhar pointed out. “If you look in our paper, we have advertisers who offer unbelievable specials to compete - and their success has been amazing.” Farquhar and the Sun Times are no different than any other businesses in northern

Broward College Launching an informative Memorial Healthcare System Lecture Series Pembroke Pines - Broward College recently hosted the inaugural Memorial Healthcare System Lecture Series in Medical Ethics at the Performing and Cultural Arts Theatre (PCAT). Members of the community were given insight into the approach local medical professionals and elected officials have taken for public health emergencies such as Zika. “Frank Sacco, along with expanding the Memorial Healthcare System and brand, was known for his passion for patient centered care in providing compassionate, effective and appropriate care for patients,” said Henry Mack, Broward College associate dean of academic affairs, who launched the series to honor Frank Sacco, retired Memorial Healthcare System president and CEO. “The lecture series hopes to provide the space within which clinicians, community members, and students can debate ethical matters and then grow in their ability to provide care that is compassionate and effective.” The panelists included Dr. Paula Thaqi, director for the Florida Department of Health, Broward County; Kimarie Stratos, JD, senior vice president and general counsel for Memorial Healthcare System; Dr. Michael Hurlburt, assistant professor of philosophy and medical ethics, Broward College; and Marty Kiar, Broward County mayor, commissioner and property appraiser-elect. Each explained how their respective organizations and agencies react to potential outbreaks and other situations. Dr. Ken Goodman, founder and director of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy, and co-director of ethics programs, served as moderator for the spirited discussion. The lecture focused on the challenge of balancing public health emergencies with patient-centered care. The series will continue each semester, focusing on various health topics facing South Florida. Hollywood - Earlier this year, more than 250 residents and business owners took part in a fast-paced, interactive, community visioning session at the Hollywood Beach Culture and Community Center. Cofounder of the Creative Cities Summit and author of For the Love of Cities, Peter Kageyama, along with innovation consultant Michelle Royal, led a community dialogue challenging residents to consider their vision for the City and ways they could help make Hollywood a City in which residents truly love to live. During the session, participants got the opportunity to develop and select a community project to receive $500 in funding from the City to put in place. Residents voted on a proposal for "Glow in the Dark Sea Art" to be bring a touch of the ocean to enliven parks in west Hollywood. Kyle Harris from Harris Art Studio in Hollywood came up with the project to add this colorful, community-created art to City parks. The concept developed into recycling weather-resistant event banners by painting them with scenes from the sea. Last month, volunteers came out to Harris Art Studio and spent the afternoon painting sea life on the banners. The banners are now on display at var-

ation facilities: Boulevard Heights Community Center, David Park, Driftwood Community Pool, Kay Gaither Community Center, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, McNicol Community Center, Oak Lake Park and Washington Park. Plenty of fun at the Annual Holiday Celebration

LIGHTING UP HALLANDALE BEACH BOULEVARD ABOVE RIGHT: Santa and his helpers threw the switch on Friday night to light the holiday lights along East Hallandale Beach Boulevard. A highlight of the annual Holiday Celebration, the switch ignites the City’s holiday season. Helping Santa are, from left, Kristin

Ramirez, Parks & Recreation Events and Marketing Coordinator, Vice Mayor Keith London, City Commissioner Michele Lazarow and Santa’s helper, little Lucas Kahl. Lucas handed out candy canes to every child who stopped by to pose with Santa. FUN FUN FUN ABOVE LEFT:

The great American hot dog is indeed versatile On a bagel. In Soup. Wrapped in corn batter. Any way you like • 10 wooden skewers or chopsticks • 2 Quarts Vegetable Oil, for frying

You have to admit that no matter how healthy you are, there is always a weakness for a good, ole hot dog. Mustard, relish, sauerkraut, onions, chili or just by itself on a soft bun, the hot dog is America’s own creation that can be fixed up in any way. Here are a few that we came up with: Everything Bagel Dogs Everything Bagel Seasoning • 2 tbsp. poppy seeds • 2 tbsp. dried minced onion • 2 tbsp. sesame seeds • 2 tsp. garlic powder • 1 tsp. Coarse salt Bagel Hot Dogs • 1 package puff pastry, thawed • 1 package cream cheese, softened • 1 package hot dogs • 1 1/2 c. water • 2 tbsp. baking soda Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Make the Everything Bagel Seasoning: Combine all

seasonings into a small bowl, stirring until well blended. Set aside. Make the Bagel Hot Dogs: Slice the puff pastry into 1" strips lengthwise. Spread cream cheese along each strip, then roll around a hot dog, covering it from end to end. Set aside. Microwave water until it starts to steam a little, about 1 minute. Pour into a large bowl, stirring in baking soda until dissolved. Dip each hot dog into the baking soda-water mixture, then place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Liberally sprinkle each hot dog with Everything Bagel seasoning. Bake until the pastry has puffed up and turned a light golden brown, about 10 to 12 minutes. Corn Dog • 1 1/2 cups yellow cornmeal • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour • 1/4 cup sugar • 1 Tablespoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 egg, beaten • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk (regular milk works too) • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil • 1 Tablespoon honey • 1 (10 count) package Hot Dogs

In a medium or large pot, add the oil. Turn heat to medium and heat oil to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl, add the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Stir together. Then add the beaten egg, buttermilk, oil and honey. Stir until combined. (Batter should be a little thicker than pancake batter) Remove hot dogs from package. Wipe them all dry with a paper towel (this will help the batter stick to them better) Insert one skewer or wooden stick into each hot dog. Pour the batter into a tall drinking glass. Holding by the skewer, take one hot dog and dunk it into the batter, coating all of the hot dog. Slowly remove from batter and let a little excess batter drip back into the cup. Immediately place it into the hot oil, while still holding the stick. Turn as necessary to brown all sides. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until all sides are a deep golden brown. Remove from hot oil and place on paper towels to drain grease. Repeat with all hot dogs. Hot Dog Soup • 1 12-16 oz package hot dogs, cut • into 1/4 inch slices • 1 head cabbage, cored and chopped • 5-7 potatoes, (optionally peeled) and cubed • 2 carrots, sliced • 3 Tbsp tomato paste • 1 Tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, chopped • 8 cups chicken broth • 1 tsp salt • ½ tsp ground pepper • 1 tsp basil In a large Dutch oven, heat olive oil. Cook onions until soft. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Lower heat to simmer and cover. Simmer for 30 minutes (or up to 2 hours).

Birds of a Feather Flock Together for a Good Cause in Downtown Hollywood Hollywood - Local business owners and visitors to Downtown Hollywood on December 1 were greeted by a surprising sight, with more than 100 plastic pink flamingos conspicuously congregating along a three-block stretch of Hollywood Boulevard. The iconic lawn ornaments were part of the

Hollywood Women's Club's annual holiday fundraiser, Flocking Lawns Around Hollywood. The Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) joined in the fundraising festivities by sponsoring the mass flocking of the boulevard median between Young Circle and 21st Avenue.

"Braving the early morning dark, sprinklers and the giggles of anyone who sees us, flocking is a fun event that is doing good," said Carol Fitzgerald, president of the Hollywood Women's Club. Normally a onewoman job, the flocking of Downtown Hollywood necessitated a six-mem-

Holiday Celebration with the Foster Park Butterflies

A highlight of the annual Holiday Celebration Friday was a performance by the Foster Park Butterflies, youngsters in the Foster Park ballet program. The vibrant children’s ballet program is a segment of the City’s Healthy Families program. Ballet, song, dance, a performance by members of the Hallandale Symphonic Pops Orchestra, and a karate demonstration were all part of the entertainment for the evening. ber team that gathered at 6:30 a.m. to position the proliferation of pink plastic birds before local businesspeople arrived at work. Flocks stay in place until evening, when they're collected by volunteers. Why flocks of frolicking flamingos? "It's fun. It's happy," Fitzgerald said. "People laugh when they see them - especially when they see a lot of them." To flock someone in Hollywood, call the Flocking Hotline at 954609-6625. Flockings will continue through December 23 or later. To have the birds removed, a donation of $25 is requested. The Hollywood Women's Club, part of the Greater Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC), was founded in 1922. The 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, culturally diverse volunteer organization of more than 100 members is dedicated to community service and the support of local and international charitable

organizations. Call 954-925-9394 or visit hollywoodwomensclub.org for information on club membership, meetings, events, volunteer opportunities or to make a donation. New members are always welcome. There is no charge for on-street downtown parking between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Free on-street parking is available in three-hour increments between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Garage parking is available for $1 per hour

at the Municipal Garages located at 251 S. 20th Avenue (between Harrison Street and Van Buren Street) and 251 N. 19th Avenue (between Tyler Street and Polk Street). Stephen Cummings to be honored on Dec. 28 They do not make them like Stephen Cummings - and the Kiwanis Club of Cooper City will host a Testemonial Dinner in his honor. On Wednesday, December 28, the Cooper City Community Center, 9000 SW 50th Place, Cooper City, 33328, will host this event with a Social Hour (5:00pm 6:00pm) and Dinner/Presentation (6:00pm 9:00pm). Cummings, a Plantation resident and a longtime contributor to the South Florida Sun Times Newspaper, has always had a close connection to everyone in Hallandale Beach. Along with Dr. “Joe” Amunategui and several others, founded and chartered the Kiwanis Club in Hallandale Beach. In 2007, Cummings took it upon himself to start the Cooper City Club. Along the way, he has been instrumental to the Hallandale Beach Club, Division (#24), State, National and International in fostering and promoting the goals and ideals of Kiwanis, for families and children, and has himself become an integral part of our Kiwanis Family. “Stephen Cummings is really something very special to so many people,” said Hallandale Beach resident and longtime friend, Leo Grachow. “He was recognized internationally as being one of the top individual donors, exceeding personal giving of over $100,000.00!” Grachow and others believe it is only fitting and appropriate that this honor is coming his way. If you would like to take part in honoring Cummings for all that he has done for everyone, make plans to attend the event today. Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

(BPT) - Heartburn, that painful feeling in your chest or throat that can follow a heavy meal, may be more than an inconvenience. Heartburn is actually the most common symptom of a medical condition that impacts up to 40 percent of Americans in their lifetime, and is also called gastroesophageal acid reflux disease, or GERD. If left untreated, chronic GERD can increase a person's risk for a precancerous condition of the esophagus called Barrett's esophagus (BE). BE is the primary risk factor for esophageal adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer of the esophagus. Often referred to as acid reflux, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can be diagnosed by a doctor. It occurs when stomach acids back up into the esophagus, causing painful symptoms such as heartburn or regurgitation. Obesity, increase in age and smoking are all additional risk factors that can increase a person's chances of experiencing reflux. Some people who suffer reflux may find symptom relief through the use of acid-controlling medications such as proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs. PPIs are acid-reducing drugs that are available over-thecounter as well as in prescription strength. In recent years, experts have grown concerned that PPIs are being overused. In fact, PPIs use has been associated with osteoporosis and bone fracture, hypomagnesaemia, the development of gastric polyps, enteric infections, interstitial nephritis and pneumonia. If you or a loved one has been taking PPIs, or other acid reducing medications, for more than eight weeks, it is important to consult with your physician to periodically review your treatment plan. Over time, chronic acid reflux due to GERD can damage the lining of the esophagus (the swallowing tube that carries foods and liquids from the mouth to the stomach), possibly leading to a pre-cancerous disease called BE. BE affects up to 12 million American adults. Left untreated, BE can increase someone's risk of developing a certain type of esophageal cancer (called esophageal adenocarcinoma). In contrast to more common cancers in the U.S. such as breast cancer, melanoma and prostate cancer, the yearly mortality rate of esophageal cancer nearly matches the yearly incidence rate. Once diagnosed with esophageal cancer, a patient's five-year survival rate is only 18%. There are powerful ways to treat BE, including an innovative and proven approach called radiofrequency ablation that delivers heat energy to the diseased lining of the esophagus, which allows physicians to remove the problematic cells before they become cancerous. The important thing is that there are now effective diagnostic tools, such as reflux testing, that provide physicians with more

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands. At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things. Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raising her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned. When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning. I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida. What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed! Although I had resisted going through an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match. Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry. Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete preemployment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem , question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. And, as in the case of the missing Marie, Terry told me they would have become integrally involved in the investigation. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring. As we all know, our folks are very precious and we need to put them in the best hands possible. I highly recommend the team at Always Classic Care. They have been extremely accomodating and allow terrific flexibility in schedule as per mom’s changing needs. They were even able to make arrangements for the aide mom loved to return to her after the three months we had mom in Ohio this past summer . Always Classic Care has offices in three counties and is prepared to meet all your care needs. options. Receiving a confirmed diagnosis is the first step in developing a treatment plan to best help you. For information about GERD and to find a physician near you, visit www.learnaboutgerd.com.

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus By Marylynne Newmark, RN Health and Medical Writer

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle. Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage. Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach. “The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “ the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.” Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process. “I have already witnessed many success stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds. “I have wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.” Dr. Charlton Adler is certified by three prestigious Boards: the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine, and he is a Certified Wound Care Specialist. His main office is located at 1380 NE Miami Gardens Drive, Suite 235 North Miami Beach, FL 33179. Staff is bilingual Spanish.
