A special Thanksgiving for many this year This is the time of year when giving to those who are in need is what makes our community so special. Last Wednesday, Paul Snow (Hallandale Food Bank) and Hallandale Beach Vice Mayor Bill Julian joined the Miami Marlins to make sure that families would indeed enjoy this Thanksgiving holiday. Long lines and happy families walked away with a complete turkey dinner, so it was indeed a special day for so many. For over four hours, turkeys were
handed out along with everything that goes into making a traditional holiday meal. Snow and his many volunteers continue to work year round to fill the shelves of the food bank to provide meals year round for so many in need. Vice Mayor Julian, like Snow and his volunteers, were joined by employees of the Marlins. More coverage of this past Thanksgiving week in Hallandale Beach on Page 10B.

Candy Cane Parade Celebrates 60th Anniversary on Saturday
HOLLYWOOD - Now in its 60th year, the Candy Cane Parade returns to the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk this Saturday, December 5 at 7:00 pm. This year’s theme for the parade is “Sea of Lights.” The Candy Cane Parade is one of the longest running holiday parades in the country. The festive and popular parade began back in the mid-1950’s by a group of Hollywood merchants as a way to draw patrons to their shops and businesses. Today it features dozens of lighted floats and vehicles, marching bands, cheerleaders, dance troupes and, of course, the jolly old elf himself, Santa. Snowbirds: A lot of positives have happened since you were last here in Hallandale Beach By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - It is hard to believe, it is already the beginning of December and the end of another year, 2016 is right around the corner. I want to welcome all of our snowbirds back to their winter homes. Since you have been gone the city has been busy. We have opened two new beach parks, broke ground on the new OB Johnson Park and The Hepburn Center, finished resurfacing A1A and painted the Broward 100 mural. The city is also planning Bluesten Park and the new main fire station. I have been asked many times about the development taking place around the city. The Beachwalk Hotel opened just a few months ago. I stopped in to see how operations were going as it seemed really quiet. Their GM told me last month during the boat show weekend that they were 80% occupied. That was good news, since we were all concerned about the impacts to the street. Diana Drive is still scheduled to be redone and we are waiting for the commencement date. The building going up just north of the beach fire station is also a hotel, but it is in Hollywood not Hallandale.
Apogee right north of our beach is also in Hollywood. Hollywood and Sian are in the process of applying for Hyde House also in Hollywood. So for those residents that have been away, I want to let you know what is happening in Hallandale Beach so far as developments. Hallandale Beach has only seen two developments on the East side, Beachwalk Hotel and the CVS this past year. 2000 Ocean Drive is in permit/plan review for construction of 62 units where the old Regency Spa was. This site was just cleared. Most of the new construction has been taking place on West Hallandale Beach Boulevard with the addition of new shopping centers. The NE 3rd Street mixed use project Art Square is finally moving forward. The CRA has also created single family units in the Palms area of our city. We are also holding a ribbon cutting for new townhomes. The Gulfstream Point mixed use apartment/commercial building on US-1 was approved, but has not broken ground yet. There are many developers proposing to build that are going through the city process. What needs to be said is that just because a developer proposes a development, it
does not mean they get approved for what they ask for. Typically, it is negotiated down or not approved. Even when they are approved, it does not mean they get built. Often, they need financing but do not come to fruition or it takes many months to acquire. The three major projects that are East and in the pipeline, are the Diplomat Hotel Project, the Oasis on Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Château Square at the corner of Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Federal Highway. Diplomat is requesting to build hotel/condos on the golf course and condo units to be built on a commercial parcel just behind City National Bank similar to the Duo. One community meeting was held for this development and the next meeting has not been put on the Planning Zoning Board yet. Oasis phase I was already approved a few years ago as a residential mixed use. The owners then acquired the parcel just West between 10th Avenue. They came forward with a revised plan to add 250 residential units, a 200 room hotel and additional commercial. The overall project will consist of 500 residential units, a 200 room hotel and commercial.
They will be hosting a community meeting within the next weeks to present it to the residents. Chateau’s projects has not been scheduled for a community meeting yet. They are going through development review and traffic analysis. All these projects and the plan can be found on the city’s website. I encourage all of our readers to check them out and feel free to call me anytime with your questions. The other news is our 2016 budget. Winter Camp Registration is Open in the City of Aventura, Dec. 21-31 AVENTURA - Winter Camp will be held at the Aventura Community Recreation Center from Monday, December 21, through Thursday, December 31, 2015 for children ages 5-14. Weekly registration is $109 for Aventura residents and $131 for non-residents. Registration for both weeks is $211 for Aventura residents and $253 for nonresidents. Complimentary bleacher seating will be set up on the sand along the parade route from Scott Street to Harrison Street with parade announcers stationed across from Charnow Park at Garfield Street and at the Hollywood Beach Theatre at Johnson Street. Spectators also may bring a blanket or lawn chair for topnotch viewing along the parade route or reserve a table at one of the many seaside restaurants for a complete beachfront experience. To ease traffic, the City encourages paradegoers to park in one of the downtown parking garages and take the free patron shuttles to the beach from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The parking garages are located at 19th Avenue at Polk Street and 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street. Prevailing downtown parking rates apply. In addition to the shuttle, the Hollywood Trolley will also be running from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. with convenient stops downtown and along the beach for $1 per person, per trip. The long-lasting condition that may come from holiday stress this year
(BPT) - You often hear the holidays referred to as "the most wonderful time of the year," but the truth is, they can also be pretty stressful. There's traveling to do, guests to welcome, events to plan, presents to buy and calendars to coordinate. All of this additional stress can have a negative impact on your health, and you may not realize there is a possible link between stress and the onset of an incredibly painful disease known as shingles. Toxic Mold Threatens Home & Family Health!

WHY INSPECT FOR MOLD? The purpose of a mold inspection is to determine the presence of mold spores in an indoor environment, our mold inspection will determine what kind of mold genus were found, the amounts found in the air or a surface if mold is visible and if the amount of spores found are normal for that environment or elevated. MOLD AND YOUR HEALTH We are exposed to many kinds of mold both indoors and outdoors. The exposure is greater in damp or wet conditions, especially when time drying out does not have a chance to occur. Of the thousands of molds that exist, some are known allergens (aggravating or causing skin, eye and respiratory problems) and a few molds produce harmful mycotoxins that can cause serious problems. But all molds, in the right conditions and high enough concentrations, are capable of adversely affecting human health. The potential for health problems occurs when people inhale large quantities of the airborne mold spores. For some people, however, a relatively small number of mold spores can cause health problems. Infants, children, immune-compromised patients, pregnant women, individuals with existing respiratory condition and the elderly
are at higher risks for adverse health effects from mold. Mold is a living organism that can grow very rapidly under certain conditions. If any portion of the room tested is, or has been, damp for an extended period since the time of testing, the likelihood of mold growth may have increased substantially since time of inspection.
I'VE GOT MOLD IN MY HOUSE. HOW DO I CLEAN IT UP? A common question with equally common answers. Moisture problems are not the cause of mold contamination, the source of the moisture is the problem.

Celebrating the delicious foods of Hannukah
This year, Hanukkah celebrations will commence on the evening of Monday, December 7th, 2014 through the evening of Tuesday, December 15th. The traditional Jewish holiday, known as the ‘Festival of Lights’—as the eight days of celebration are marked by the lighting of one candle per night on the ninebranched menorah—is celebrated with a customary feast, featuring savory potato latkes, juicy brisket, and sumptuous baked goods in keeping with time-honored Hanukkah spirit. POTATO LATKES Salt 2 large eggs 2 lbs (1 kg) potatoes oil for frying
Peel and finely grate the potatoes. Put them straight into cold water, then drain and squeeze them as dry as you can by pressing them with your hands in a colander. This is to remove the starchy liquid, which could make the latkes soggy. Beat the eggs lightly with salt, add to the potatoes, and stir well. Film the bottom of a frying
pan with oil and heat. Take serving-spoonfuls, or as much as 1/4 cup (50 ml), of the mixture and drop into the hot oil. Flatten a little, and lower the heat so that the fritters cook through evenly. When one side is brown, turn over and brown the other. Lift out and serve very hot.
BEEF BRISKET WITH ONIONS 1 5-6 pound first cut (a.k.a. flat cut) beef brisket, trimmed so a thin layer of fat remains in some spots (do not over-trim!) 1 heaping tablespoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1-1/2 tablespoons allpurpose flour 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 8 medium yellow onions, peeled and sliced 1/2inch thick 3 tablespoons tomato paste 3 cloves garlic 6 carrots, peeled and halved Handful fresh chopped parsley, for garnish (optional) Set an oven rack in the middle position and pre-
heat the oven to 350°F. Season the brisket on both sides with salt and pepper. Lightly dust the brisket with the flour, then shake and turn to coat evenly. Heat the oil over medium-high heat in a heavy flameproof roasting pan or ovenproof enameled cast-iron pot just large enough to hold the brisket and carrots snugly. Add the brisket to the pan and sear on both sides until crusty brown areas appear on the surface here and there, 5 to 7 minutes per side. Transfer the brisket to a platter, then add the onions to the pot and stir constantly with a wooden spoon, scraping up any browned bits stuck to the bottom of the pot. Cook until the onions are softened and golden brown, about 15 minutes. (If browned bits stick to the bottom of the pan and start to burn, add a few tablespoons of water and scrape with a wooden spoon to release them.) Turn off the heat and place the brisket, fatty side up, and any accumulated juices on top of the onions. Spread the tomato paste evenly over the brisket, then scatter
the garlic and carrots around the edges of the pot. Cover the pot very tightly with aluminum foil (preferably heavy duty or two layers) or a lid, then transfer to the oven and cook for 1-1/2 hours. Transfer the brisket to a cutting board and, using an electric or very sharp knife, slice the meat across the grain into approximately 1/8inch-thick slices. Return the slices to the pot, overlapping them at an angle so that you can see a bit of the top edge of each slice. The end result should resemble the original unsliced brisket leaning slightly backward. Check the seasonings and correct if necessary. If the sauce appears dry, add 2 to 3 teaspoons of water to the pot. Cover the pot tightly and return to the oven. Lower the heat to 325°F and cook the brisket until it is fork-tender, 13/4 to 2-1/2 hours, or longer if necessary. Check once or twice during cooking to make sure that the liquid is not bubbling away. If it is, add a few more teaspoons of water—but not more. Also, each time you check, spoon some
of the liquid on top of the roast so that it drips down between the slices. It is ready to serve with its juices, but, in fact, it's even better the second day. It also freezes well.

Cook egg noodles according to package instructions. Drain well and toss with butter. While noodles are cooking, in a large bowl with a mixer, combine cream cheese, sugar and eggs until smooth. Add cooked, buttered noodles to the cream cheese mixture and by hand, gently stir to combine. Add both milks and raisins and gently stir again. Pour mixture into a large casserole dish like we

Fry the dough until each side is a deep brown. test one to make sure they're not doughy in the middle. Transfer donuts to a paper towel, pat off any excess grease, and then coat with sugar. Giving back to the community for Thanksgiving
Helping the community, Hallandale Beach City Commissioners stepped donating time and efforts last week to distribute about 2,500 turkeys to residents and families in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Serving the less fortunate and homebound residents has become a family affair for many in Hallandale Beach. On Thanksgiving Day, several families turned out to package meals for delivery to homebound residents while others served the more than 100 residents who stopped by for a hearty Thanksgiving dinner with friends. Annually, the Hallandale Beach Police Explorers and Hallandale Beach Police deliver several hundred meals to homebound residents. Also, City Commissioners, City employees and residents turnout to volunteer to serve the 100-plus residents who stopped by the Hepburn Center. Joe DiMaggio autographed baseball heads list of silent aution items for Dec. 12th PAL Comedy Show
A piece of history will take center stage in the silent auction at the annual Police Athletic League (PAL) of Hallandale Beach Comedy Show, at 7 p.m. Saturday night, Dec. 12, at the Sport of Kings Lounge at Gulfstream Park. A baseball signed by the late Hall of Fame Yankee, Joe DiMaggio, will be auctioned off at the event. Donated by Hallandale Beach resident Robert Levey, the authenticated baseball is inscribed “HOF 55,” and is one of 300 signed by the “Yankee Clipper” on the day he was enshrined into the Hall of Fame. Mr. Levey, left, presented the baseball to Jonathan Carrillo, PAL Program Coordinator, recently in ad-
vance of the auction. The annual Comedy Show is one the top fundraising events to support PAL athletic programs for Hallandale Beach area children. Comic headliner Brad Williams leads a group of talented comedians, including Jamal, Phil Tag and Lenny Marcus.
