Seeking artist to create a Pride/Allythemed flag to fly at the Center

Marchers in this years’ Candy Cane Parade and Pillars of the Community

The Art and Culture Center/ Hollywood is commissioning an original Pride/Ally-themed flag that will hang from the flagpole at the entrance to the Main Gallery at 1650 Harrison Street. In addition, miniature replica flags will be produced and given away to visitors at the opening reception and additional events during the exhibition Open Dialogues: Stories from the LGBTQ Community. The exhibition runs from February 8 – May 15, 2020, during which the flag will be on view. Deadline for submissions is December 18, 2019. A $150 honorarium will be awarded for the selected flag. Questions may be submitted to curator@artandculturecenter.org. The selected flag will support the goals of “Open Dialogues,” which is to engage with the stories and identities of a diverse cross-section of LGBTQ residents while fostering conversations within the community at large. The project includes a newly commissioned video and exhibition as well as special events.

On December 7th, The Hollywood Lions will be marching in this years’ annual Hollywood Candy Cane Parade for the 3rd year in a row. The Candy Cane Parade was first established in the mid-1950’s by a group of merchants with the intent of driving patrons and shoppers to their markets. It is a traditional event that features lighted floats, marching bands, and several vehicles passing through the Hollywood Boardwalk. But who are the Hollywood Lions, and to what extent are they involved with our community? The Lions are a local service club whose goal is to bring together the community, encourage volunteerism, and support programs that offer services to those who are in need. Although the Hollywood Lions are a local organization, they are a part of a larger international network of Lions Clubs, which span over 200 countries with 10 million members and have been around since 1917. In the 2.5 years since their club was established, The Hollywood Lions have committed themselves to the improvement of the community in numerous ways. The Lions have helped rebuild a play area for children at the LES Learning Center in Hollywood, cleaned waste from several beaches, parks, and streets, and they have conducted a massive recycling initiative (HLC Recycle Challenge) to keep plastics out of oceans and convert collected plastic into benches for city parks and schools. At 9 am, on the day of the Candy Cane Parade, The Lions will be hosting a ribbon-cutting at Lion Park for a new bench

Gulfstream Park’s Symphony In Lights Dazzles Shoppers Every Night By Marylynne Newmark

For the fourteenth year in a row, The Village at Gulfstream Park has outdone itself with an annual extravaganza, this year Introducing its” Symphony in Lights”. On Opening Night, November 9th, thousands gathered to enjoy the splendor of the season kickoff. Aside from the spectacle of dancing lights synchronized to fabulous holiday music, there were live performances, warm welcomes… and of course, Santa! Emcee for the evening was Lynn Martinez, news anchor at WSVN-Channel 7, media sponsor for the event. She introduced principal representatives of the other sponsors that include Florida Power & Light, the City of Hallandale Beach and the YMCA of South Florida. At 6:30 on the 9th, triumphant seasonal sounds of the TransSiberian Orchestra heralded the flip of the switch for the magnificent “Symphony in Lights”, a dazzling display of lights in motion choreographed to the music. Holiday music of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra was selected because of its powerfully strong tempo, which

added to the drama of the lights reflecting off the trees in The Village. During the evening, firstnighters enjoyed Christmas carol renditions from various choral groups, including the 50-member Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida, the 60-member Hallandale Magnet Marching Band, and a local band called Pulse, who performed a crowdpleasing mixture of music from top 40s to Latin to seasonal. That was then, but “Symphony in Lights” is ongoing. The extravaganza will continue with its synchronized music every night during the holiday season thru December 31st. ‘There’s always something to be thankful for.’ This quote holds so much meaning during this time of year. We are in the season to give thanks for all the things that we are grateful for. For many of us, the meaning of Thanksgiving usually includes feasting, four-day weekends, football games, floats, family reunions, and the upcoming Christmas festivities. But this is the ideal time to give thanks. In addition to being thankful, generosity is a key component in life. Gratitude and generosity go hand in hand. It has been said that ‘Gratitude is like breathing in; letting ourselves be touched by the goodness in others and our world. While generosity

is like breathing out; sensing our mutual belonging and offering our care’Unknown. The holiday season is dear to me; therefore, I try to go above and beyond during this time especially for our children. Recently, I purchased 100 turkeys in which I distributed throughout the community. As we are in the holiday season I am aiming to provide as much as I can. I will be conducting a Sneaker Drive, collecting sneakers for children aged

2 years old up to high school-aged children. The collected sneakers will be distributed to different schools, homeless shelters, and churches as needed. The Hallandale Symphonic Pops Orchestra 30 Years of Broadway, Jazz and Swing The Hallandale Symphonic Pops Orchestra is currently rehearsing for its opening concert to be held on Tuesday December 3rd at The Hollywood Central Performing Art Center. The concert includes wonderfully talented guest artists: soprano, Josephine Dolce and Tenor, Kieth Workowsi. The concert is a mix of Holiday favorites and musical theater. The orchestra founded 30 years ago has faithfully

performed a mix of popular classics, Broadway, Jazz and Swing music at each concert giving the audience a broad musical experience. The orchestra has supported local professional talent including young musicians of exceptional ability. The orchestra is made up of some retired professionals as well as a healthy number of younger musicians. Peter Fuchs, the Artistic Director is a seasoned former Broadway

conductor who has conducted many Broadway shows with big stars headlining. The orchestra now finds itself in a difficult position having lost financial support due to city budget constraints. “We are trying to keep our ticket process low and still provide the best concert” said Armin Lowenwirth The President of the Orchestra Board. We decided to truncate our season from our usual four concerts to two. We are reaching

Soprano, Josephine Dolce out to various funding agencies to try and make up the shortfall. We will use the next year to rebuild and make sure the orchestra is on sound footing.

The bench, as well as a tree planting, will be celebrated at Lion Park. The Mayor, as well as other city commissioners and Lions Club dignitaries, will be in attendance. Dale Cheek, Director and Secretary of The Lions Club, encourages any citizens to come and join them to celebrate the occasion and learn about how community members can play a role in helping to collect plastic so that we can build the next recycled bench for South Broward High School. In addition to collecting recycled material, the Lions have also adopted four streets around the perimeter of the Hollywood Beach Golf Course. As litter control, they conduct liter clean up on these streets four times a year. On December 14th from 9-11 am, the next clean up is scheduled, and all are invited to come to join. The Lions have also dedicated themselves to other causes, most

Hallandale Beach Asks Congress to Act on Climate Last Thursday Hallandale Beach joined other S. Florida city commissions in asking Congress to fight fossil fuel emissions, the largest single contributor of worldwide human caused climate change. Coconut Creek, Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Surfside, S. Miami and last month the City of Miami have passed similar resolutions. These cities are calling on Congress to enact legislation to enact a carbon fee and return the proceeds to all American households. The leading bill is Congressman Ted Deutch’s Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. The bill’s job is not to raise funds for public investment, but to shift private spending and investment away from fossil fuels and toward efficient and cleaner energy. A U.S.carbon fee will incentivise a worldwide economic shift. This legislation has been studied for over a decade and is being
