WHAT ArE DEnTAL CAuSES Of TOOTHACHES AnD HOW THEy ArE TrEATED? Common dental causes of toothaches include: • dental cavities • dental abscess • gum disease • irritation of the tooth root • cracked tooth syndrome

DEnTAL CAVITIES AnD DEnTAL ABSCESSES The most common cause of a toothache is a dental cavity. Dental cavities (caries) are holes in the two outer layers of a tooth called the enamel and the dentin. The enamel is the outermost white hard surface and the dentin is the yellow layer just beneath the enamel. Both layers serve to protect the inner living tooth tissue called the pulp, where blood vessels and nerves reside. Bacteria in the mouth convert sugar into acid. The acid softens and dissolves the enamel and dentin, creating cavities. Small, shallow cavities may not cause pain and may go unnoticed. The larger deeper cavities can be painful and collect food debris. The inner living pulp of the affected tooth can become irritated by bacterial toxins or by foods and liquids that are cold, hot, sour, or sweet, thereby causing severe toothaches. Severe injury to the pulp can lead to the death of pulp tissue, resulting in a tooth infection (dental abscess). Deeper cavities can also lead to a small swelling or a

Toothaches from these larger cavities are the most common reason for visits to dentists. Treatment for cavities depends on the severity. for a small and shallow cavity, treatment usually involves a dental filling. for a larger cavity, a filling may be insufficient, resulting in the need for an onlay or crown. for a cavity that has penetrated and injured the pulp or for an infected tooth, a root canal procedure of the affected tooth is typically required. In a few instances, an extraction may be unavoidable depending on the size of the infection. The root canal procedure involves removing the dying pulp tissue (thus avoiding or removing the tooth infection) and replacing it with an inert filling material. The procedure is used in an attempt to save the dying tooth from extraction. Once a root

canal procedure is completed, the tooth is more prone to fracture and will oftentimes require a crown to protect it. Sometimes, a dental abscess can be the cause of rapid swelling in the mouth that could potentially spread to nearby parts of the face such as the sinuses, the floor of the mouth, or the bloodstream. This rapid swelling is caused by the spread of infection and can be an emergency if the spreading cannot be controlled and results in a compromised airway or more serious condition. Treatment at a hospital emergency room may be necessary. GuM DISEASE The second most common cause of toothache is gum disease (periodontal disease). Gum disease refers to infection of the soft tissue (gingiva) and abnormal loss of bone that surrounds and holds the teeth in

place. Gum disease is caused by toxins secreted by oral bacteria in "plaque" that accumulates over time along and under the gum line. This plaque is a mixture of food, saliva, and bacteria. An early sign of gum disease is gum bleeding. Pain is a symptom of more advanced gum disease as the loss of bone around the teeth leads to the formation of deep gum pockets. Bacteria in these pockets cause gum infection, swelling, pain, and further bone destruction. Advanced gum disease can cause loss of otherwise healthy teeth. Gum disease is complicated by such factors as poor oral hygiene, family history of gum disease, smoking, and family history of diabetes. Treatment of gum disease always involves meticulous oral hygiene by an individual as well as removal of bacterial plaque and tartar (hardened, calcified plaque) by a dental professional. vanced gum disease usually requires a thorough cleaning of the teeth and teeth roots called "scaling and root planing" and "subgingival curettage." For the first time in recent memory, global response had no reservations here. The objective was to back France, which wasted no time as it led an assault over the weekend on strategic ISIS locations in Syria. As the military did what it needed to do, the reality that this could happen here in the United States was something that occupied every news program on Saturday and Sunday. While many "experts" on terrorism believe that since 9/11, America is a much safer place, others dispute this. Carl Morgan, a Hollywood resident, has been talking about this very subject for 10 years - speaking to groups about the real threat that exists here in this country. Given that this is an election cycle, and every other country in the world is now involved - in many ways - the issue has been heightened. Morgan insists that whether people listen to or like Donald Trump or not - it is irrelevant - but when it comes to our borders, it has been proven over and over again that Mexico and Canada can be easy access to this country, and that is something that the Republican Presidential candidate has talked about over and over again. "The way I have felt all along is that it is nearly impossible to stop illegals from coming in this country without the help of Canada and Mexico," Morgan stated. "We can have the best screening process that money can buy in our airports, train stations and bus terminals, but if they aren't coming here in that manner, it is not going to help."

Complicating matters is the ease with which a terrorist might slip out of Syria, cross through Turkey and enter Greece and the European Union, as at least one of the Paris killers appears to have done. There is always going to be a challenge for security in Europe as it appears the Paris attacks involved both Middle Eastern operatives and Muslims from France and Belgium, backing up that what happens in the United States will be far less than what happened in Paris or any other city. Many will bring up the those horrific attacks on this soil that were by deeply alienated Muslims, including Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, and the Tsarnaev brothers, perpetrators of the Boston Marathon bombing. But the incidence of such malcontents is lower than in Europe, whose larger Muslim communities, social science data shows, are markedly less integrated. Any way you slice what happened last Friday, it is a tragedy that not only shook up a city and a country, but had lasting effects on the rest of the world.

Transportation remains a very hot topic in the City in December. It is a robust plan, but having the base costs, we will be able to ask future developers to mitigate the impact to pay for improvements. Transportation planning is one of the most difficult tasks. The first large project that was approved when I joined the MPO, was the 595 expressway that was back over 12 years ago. They were talking about it for years and now, it is finally done. Transportation is not easy, it is also not cheap and it will continue to evolve with new technology. Most planning is done in 30 year horizons with multi-million dollar price tags. Our biggest priced items are adding roads. We are still working on two alternative roads one going east and west that has been on the drawing board for 10 years and a new idea to add a north and south road to help our traffic. I hope that we can all work together to make them a reality. I started this series with the history of transportation. Considering the first traffic signal was created in the late 1800’s, maybe in our lifetime more changes

This is real time signal changing to adapted real time traffic flow demands. no one has been talking about it, but years ago the county could have put on the ballot, a penny tax to help pay for this system. That is why we are still at a snail’s pace. Without a fund source, we have been looking at the low lying fruit. One such project was way finding. This is placing signs in our city to direct traffic to points of interest by using alternative routes. Sounds like a waste, but how many times have you sat behind drivers that have now clue where they are going. delaying traffic? The other low lying fruit, but not so inexpensive, are alternatives we have been pursuing as improvements to transit, we have added an additional mini bus route that connects to the train and are adding bus shelters and stops where we can acquire the right of way and the biggest project, is the completion of the citywide basis of design report for completing our streets. This alone was $600,000 dollars. The draft report will be out

We have been working to make improvements, but without funding it is difficult. I wrote about our mitigation impact fee. To date, we have collected $670,000 dollars. Sounds like a lot of money to us every day folks. To date, those dollars covered the ability to place pedestrian lighting on the A1A project. fDOT funds do not include any lighting. The project also did not include replacing the mast arms. When you hear of the state cutting taxes, this is what happens. remember, to do everything on our wish list, it would cost $80 million dollars. Well, we are 1/80th of the way there. Over the past few years, signalization has been addressed by the County. new computerized signalization has been installed to help prevent stop and go traffic. By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLAnDALE BEACH - Over the past two weeks, I have written about transportation planning, governance and Hallandale Beach’s model to address traffic impacts. It is important but not that glamorous. I share this view about infrastructure. There is nothing exciting about infrastructure. It is mostly taken for granted. unless the faucet does not turn on, the toilet does not flush, your trash is smelling, your street is flooded, the swing is broken on the playground or you are stuck in traffic for hours, then people get excited! Much of what your taxpayer dollars go to, is infrastructure and the operation and management of it. That is what makes local government so important. It is real life, day to day quality issues. Transportation is different in the fact that much of the funds to pay for it, are trickled down from the federal government or are from shared revenues, sources like gas taxes or tolls. This week, there was a transportation bill passed in the federal government that is now in conference and hopefully will be agreed upon between the house and senate. Many people do not realize that if they did not take action, many united States citizens would be waiting on the platform for their trains not getting to work. In the new bill there are no local funds. This means that your city roads must be paid for by the little amount of fuel taxes, shared revenue and/or general funds. The uS Conference of Mayors has and continues to lobby for inclusion in the funding. Are There Liars in our Midst? Dr. Ron.., Can psychologists easily determine when somebody is lying. Were you able to detect falsehoods by any of the candidates in the recent debates?...... MS, Hollywood Aaaahh MS, if it were only that easy!... Although the Pinocchio phenomenon is myth, psychologist have discovered other ways to tell if someone is lying or being deceptive. The following is some scientific research on this matter, taken from a text from which I used to teach at Florida international university. (Psychology Applied to Modern Life; Weitan & Lloyd, 7th edition). It is much more difficult to detect deception than most people think. Most people give themselves too much credit for this ability. This is significantly the case because most people have false beliefs about detecting deception which misguides their judgment. Some of the most common erroneous beliefs about deception include the idea that liars take long pauses before speaking, have a slower pace of talking, engage in excessive shifting of ones posture, or present with a reduction of eye contact & smiling. Recent research; however, has offered more reliable methods of detection on this matter. Liars mostly expose themselves via non-verbal cues.., similar to what are known as “tells” in professional poker circuits. These cues can be detected vocally or visually. Vocal cues associated with deception include stammering, excessive hesitations, speaking in a higherpitched voice, and responding with short answers. Visual cues include the dilation of eye pupils, excessive blinking, nervous touching of oneself, and incongruency between ones facial expression, and lower body movements. ( ie., nervous smiling while ones feet are nervously shuffling around.). You may want to see if you can detect any of these “tells” at the next debate, but your search might be in vain for three reasons. First, sometimes people are telling the truth even if they do present with some non-verbal cues associated with lying. Second, if they are lying, they probably won’t exhibit any cues to pick up on as they surely have been prepped and coached by professionals in this area. Maybe each candidate is telling the truth the best he can from his own particular viewpoint. (BPT) - By 2030, the number of people turning to knee replacement surgery to end pain and regain mobility will likely increase to 3.5 million annually, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. for many patients, recovery from knee replacement surgery is painful and slow, and the results are often not what people expect. a Rainbow,’ the title track of their 1975 album and the song for which this tour is named. In the early fall of 1973 The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage. Their debut album had already spawned numerous hits. The band’s recent release is a time capsule from that period. “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries” says Gray. WREATH PLACEMENT - Hallandale Beach residents turned out last Wednesday to pay tribute to the brave Hallandale Beach men and women who served in the armed forces. The annual event includes ceremonies at Hallandale Beach Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Cultural Community Center and wreath placement at the City’s War Memorial. North City Beach Park and new Hyde Beach Kitchen are now open

• Thursday’s ribbon cutting event brings out City officials and residents who will take advantage of this impressive facility

After almost two years of construction, the redesigned north City Beach Park and new Hyde Beach Kitchen + Cocktails were officially opened last Thursday. Located at the east end of East Hallandale

Beach Boulevard, the park and restaurant complex were completed as part of a public-private partnership with the City of Hallandale Beach and The related Group, which built the Beach Club and Beachwalk condominiums and is currently developing the Hyde Beach condominium in Hollywood. The park was redeveloped at no cost to City taxpayers. Also, City residents with proof of City residency will receive a 10 percent discount on all food and
