Breakfast at Gulfstream Park returns this Saturday Breakfast at Gulfstream, a popular Saturday morning tradition which attracts families and racing fans, will return Saturday, November 2 at the Gulfstream Park. Breakfast at Gulfstream will run from 7-10 a.m. every Saturday through March. To celebrate the first Breakfast at Gulfstream, the first 200 guests will receive free breakfast. The regular price of the all-you-can-eat breakfast is $8. Children under two eat for free. Parking and admission are always free at Gulfstream Park. It is also the fact that there is not an association, where ideas could be bounced and implemented. It would also help to have set times and days when they are open, so people would know."

Casino gaming is a very hot topic in Hallandale Beach By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - As the legislative season heats up, it is no surprise that gaming is the topic of discussion. I have been Mayor of a city the has two pari-mutuel tracks for 10 years. The majority of our commission knows this complex issue. Commissioner Bill Julian was raised in horse industry. It was very interesting seeing a group of well indented legislators conduct a meeting on the issue who have not lived in and around south Florida. Over the past years they have not even reached out to our city for input. I want to thank those that have reached out to gather information Some understand the horse racing industry and some were from south Florida. It was very interesting to see the local press quote me on the topic even though the past
years no mention has been of our city, only the tracks in it. I am not fan of destination casinos, we have tracks that have been here for years and need to be made whole before we sell the farm to outsiders. For over 80 years our city has been home to two race tracks. We have also been home to gaming for many years. Our residents supported slots. To me and many others, it is a farce that we do not have full casinos. It is not a farce, it is politics - plain and simple. I am hoping that this may change, but only time will tell. While the debate continues only lobbyist make money and campaigns get funded. Last week, the Senate held their workshop on casinos. I sat and listened to two hours of public testimony. There was only one person that came up to oppose casinos out of
100. This was one person that testified for religious reasons. I commend her, but the reality is, there are addicts and prohibition of casinos that will not stop them, everyone even testified from the health field treatment is key. Everyone agreed casinos and gambling are here and we need to make sure there is proper regulations in place or make sure we create an economy where all of the community can benefit. We have some tough decisions in our city when it comes to our tracks. We want them to be successful. We also want to make sure if full casinos do not come to pass we have a balanced economy and no ends up with empty tracks of land. Our tracks need to remain a destination within our city for people to enjoy and visitors to come and support our busi-
nesses. Part of that goal is addressed by proper land use and development goals. Our city has worked hard with our residents to make sure we have balanced redevelopment. While we want to see success, it must be balanced while preserving our community. During the hearing, there was reference to creating black holes that suck the life out of local businesses. We need to not forget that there is balance in everything. We will continue to follow this issue closely. The casino issue is complex and competitive to say the least. You cannot take one issue without it impacting the other. Decoupling cannot be
addressed as one issue. Many people would love to see the end of greyhound dog racing. The answer to those groups is decoupling. This means to not requiring racing as part of allowing slots machines. Decoupling to others means the end of an industry that they know and supported for generations. Decoupling as a whole threatens the horse industry that employs thousands of people throughout our state. To our city, there is a concern that decoupling could allow the moving of gambling licenses. That is portability. We as a city are, and have remained opposed to portability. Talk about black holes. Imagine no investment
in the two mainland parcels in our city. We are also concerned that without the proper tax structure investment will not happen. We want a balanced gaming law that will allow for a balanced playing field when it comes to table games, a fair tax rate, preservation of our current local gaming contracts and no portability. Throughout the year, Medicare has different enrollment periods. The Open Enrollment Period, or OEP, is the timeframe during which Medicare beneficiaries (people with Medicare) can make changes to their Medicare plans. Like in 2012, this year's OEP took place from October 15 and it will end December 7, 2013. Any changes you make to your Medicare plan during this period will go into effect on January 1, 2014. Please plan appropriately as time is of the essence. If you are turning 65, you are entitled to select a Medicare health plan 3 months
prior your birthday and 3 months after your birthday. COSTS FOR MEDICARE HEALTH PLANS - What you pay for your Medicare Healthplan (your out of pocket costs) depend on: • Whether the plan charges a monthly premium. • Whether the plan pays any of your monthly Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) premium. • Whether the plan has a yearly deductible or any additional deductibles. • How much you pay for each visit or service (copayment or coinsurance). Every kind of real noise one can imagine is real and produced from the vocal chords of Michael Winslow. After graduation from High School and a short attendance at college, he had his first professional performance at a club in Boulder, Colorado named Tulagi’s, where Jim Hen-
drix, The Doors, Tommy Bolin and other famous bands had played. In 1984, he finally got his big chance when Director Hugh Wilson saw him perform at a Long Beach Theatre where he was opening for Count Basie and his orchestra. Wilson was blown away with Winslow’s performance and immediately wrote him into the script of the film, “Police Academy.” It became an instant success. He also played a part in Mel Brook’s “Spaceballs” and another hit movie “Gremlins.” Michael is a master

Complete Streets Community Outreach Meeting

By Laura Borgesi, City Engineer HOLLYWOOD - A Community Outreach Meeting, sponsored by the City of Hollywood and the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, November 5th at City Hall in Room 219. The topic of discussion will be the Hollywood Boulevard Complete Streets Project which runs from Dixie Highway to City Hall Circle. The MPO has identified this segment of Hollywood Boulevard as a candidate demonstration project to high-
light the benefits of a new concept called Complete Streets. They awarded the City approximately $5 million dollars for the Project. A Complete Street is defined as a street planned, designed and operated for all modes of transportation and all users regardless of age and ability. Pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders and motorists must be able to safely move along and cross a Complete Street. Complete Street improvements create safer, healthier streets and encourage walk-
ing, bicycling and transit use. Improvements can include wider sidewalks, buffered bike lanes, pedestrian lighting, improved pedestrian crossings, road pavement areas, bus shelters and landscaped medians. This project will also look at narrowing travel lanes to address automobile traffic speeds and reallocating parking and circulation. The project will also look at incorporating new street trees, art in public spaces and new street furniture, as well as how the overall project fits with the immediate commercial

Power shoes: Choosing the right footwear for climbing the corporate ladder (BPT) - Climbing the corporate ladder requires marketable skills, initiative, creativity and ... the right shoes? While the importance of proper footwear may seem obvious for professions that require standing or walking all day, such as waitressing, nursing or cooking, poor shoe choices can also trip you up in an office setting. "At best, sore feet can be a troublesome distraction when you need to concentrate in a meeting or be at your best during a job interview," says Dr. Matthew Garoufalis, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). "At worst, severe foot injuries from poor footwear can require corrective surgery that puts you out of commission - and out of the office - for extended periods of time." While you may assume that some professions are more prone to injury than others, or that women wearing high heels are more at risk, everyone working nine to five should take steps to ensure they head to work every morning wearing shoes that will help - not hinder - how well they do their jobs. Amnesty Program is offering property owners a penalty-free break Have you had work performed on your home or property without the required permits? Do you have a code violation that has
attracted the attention of City inspectors? Hallandale Beach is offering property owners a penalty-free break if they come for-
ward and take steps to bring the property into compliance with building, safety and health codes. Under the City’s new Amnesty Program, property owners have one year to save on fines and penalties. The program began September 3, 2013 and will end September 2, 2014. Property owners can come forward to apply for permits to legalize the work performed and gain compliance with current codes without incurring the usual penalties and
City recognizes Veterans on Nov. 6 and Nov. 11 Hallandale Beach veterans who served in peace time and in time of war will be honored in ceremonies at the Nov. 6, City Commission meeting and on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2013. Veterans who live within the City will be honored by the City Commission at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 6, and all area veterans are invited to participate in ceremonies beginning at 9 a.m., Monday, Nov. 11, at the Hallandale Cemetery and Cultural Community Center. Veterans who wish to be recognized at the City Commission meeting should register in advance with City Clerk Sheena James, 954-457-1340. The annual Veterans Day ceremonies include services at Hallandale Cemetery, 801 NW 6th Avenue, beginning at 9 a.m., followed by a reception at 10 a.m. at the Cultural Community Center, 410 SE 3rd Street, and formal flag raising ceremonies at 11 a.m. at the City’s Veterans Memorial between the Cultural Community Center and City Hall.
