Patty Asseff EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the second of a three-part series on the 2012 local election. Veteran journalist Jana Soeldner Danger asked the questions of all candidates running in Hollywood on Nov. 6.
In Hollywood, commission candidates run for seats in specific districts, except for the citywide
Judy Bates mayor’s seat. Incumbents in four of the six districts have challengers. In districts 2 and 5, the incumbents have chosen not to run again. There are a total of 18 candidates running. The South Florida Sun Times asked each of them the following questions:
Kevin Biederman 1. Why are you running for office? 2. What is the biggest problem facing your city and what would you do about it? 3. What is one thing the current commission is doing right? 4. How would you like to see the city change? 5. Why should you be elected instead of your opponent?

BROWARD DENTAL IMPLANTS & COSMETIC CENTER What Is Dry Mouth (Xerostomia) and Causes
Xerostomia is a medical term used for dry mouth due to lack of saliva - there is not enough saliva to keep the mouth wet; there is reduced or absent saliva flow. It is also informally known as pasties, cotton mouth, drooth, dough mouth or des (from desert). It is usually a subjective complaint - the patient complains about it and subsequently sees the doctor. Experts say xerostomia is usually caused by the inadequate function of the salivary glands. Xerostomia can lead to

uently a side effect of medication, which may improve with a new prescription or an adjustment of dosage. We all get a dry mouth sometimes - when we are upset, under stress or extremely frightened. Xerostomia is different the individual's mouth is dry most of the time. Some patients may think dry mouth is a normal part of aging - it is not. It is, however, more commonly found among the elderly. Experts say the main reason is that elderly people take more medications compared to the rest of the population, and some of these medications cause xerostomia. Xerostomia may be a symptom of a serious systemic disease, such as systemic lupuserythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, sarcoidosis, amyloidosis, Sjogren's syndrome and hypothyroidism. A systemic disease is one that affects the entire body. In fact, xerostomia is not a disease; it is a symptom, just like headache is a symptom and not a disease. Xerostomia is "a dryness of the mouth, having a varied etiology, resulting from diminished or arrested salivary secretion, or asialism." What are the signs and symptoms of Xerostomia (dry mouth)? A symptom is something the patient senses and describes, while a sign is something other people, such as the doctor notice. For example, drowsiness may be a symptom while dilated pupils may be a sign. The signs and symptoms of xerostomia may include: · Bad breath · Cheilitis - inflammation and fissuring of the lips · Cracked lips · Cracking and fissuring of the oral mucosa (inner lining of the cheeks and lips) · Dryness in the mouth · Dysgeusia - taste dis-
to stimulate the production of saliva. Experts say that symptomatic treatment for dry mouth typically includes four areas: · Increasing the flow of saliva · Replacing lost secretions · Controlling dental caries · Some specific measures, such as treating infections A patient with xerostomia should pay special attention to oral/dental hygiene. This includes plaque removal and treatment of gingival infections, inflammation and dental caries. Brushing teeth and flossing regularly is important. Sipping fluids (noncarbonated, sugarless), chewing xylitol-containing gum, and using a carboxymethyl cellulose saliva substitute as a mouthwash may help.
their doctor or dentist. The patient should not wear dentures during sleep. The dentures must be kept clean by overnight soaking. Individuals with xerostomia should avoid: · Sugary foods or drinks · Acidic foods or drinks · Dry foods · Spicy foods · Astringents · Excessively hot or cold drinks Alcohol consumption should be kept to a minimum or avoided altogether. Caffeine consumption should be kept to a minimum. Chewing or smoking tobacco should be avoided. Eating such foods as carrots or celery may help with residual salivary gland function. Breathing breathing through the nose does not dry the mouth, while breathing through the mouth does. Humidity - a humidifier can add moisture to a bedroom. This may help reduce dry mouth symptoms that develop during sleep. If you have any concerns with “dry mouth” or any other dental problem call us today so we can bring back your smile.

orders · Fungal infections in the mouth, such as thrush · Glossodynia - painful tongue · Increased need to drink water, especially at night · Inflammation of the tongue, tongue ulcers · Lipstick sticking to teeth · More frequent gum disease · More tooth decay and plaque · Problems speaking · Problems swallowing and chewing - especially dry and crumbly foods, such as crackers or cereals. · Problems wearing dentures - problems with denture retention, denture sores and the tongue sticking to the palate. · Sialadenitis - salivary gland infection · Sore throat · Sticky saliva · Stringy saliva · The skin at the corners of the mouth may split, or be sore What are the causes of xerostomia (dry mouth)? Xerostomia may be a sign of an underlying disease or condition, such as Sjogren's syndrome, diabetes (poorly controlled), or LambertEaton syndrome. It may also be caused by some medications. Some possible causes include: Medications - many prescription and OTC (over-the-counter, no prescription required) medications cause dry mouth, including antihistamines, hypertensive medications (for high blood pressure), anti-diarrheals, muscle relax-

ants, urinary continence drugs, some Parkinson's disease medications, as well as a number of antidepressants. Age - even though old age is not a dry mouth risk factor, elderly individuals tend to take more medications than the rest of the population. Many of the medications taken by seniors cause dry mouth. Cancer treatment radiotherapy (radiation therapy) to the head and neck can damage the salivary glands, resulting in less saliva being produced. Chemotherapy can alter the nature of the saliva, as well as how much of it the body produces. Injury or surgery which results in nerve damage to the head and neck area, can result in dry mouth. Tobacco - either chewing or smoking tobacco increases the risk of dry mouth symptoms. Dehydration caused by lack of sufficient fluids. Exercising or playing in the heat - the salivary glands may become dry as the bodily fluids are concentrated elsewhere in the body. Dry mouth
symptoms are more likely if the exercise or playing continues for a long time. Some health conditions, illnesses and habits such as: · Anxiety disorders · Depression · HIV/AIDS · Parkinson's disease · Poorly controlled diabetes · Sjogren's syndromes · Sleeping with the mouth open · Snoring · Stroke and Alzheimer's disease - more likely to cause a perception of dry mouth What are the treatment options for xerostomia (dry mouth)? Treatment for xerostomia depends on several factors; such as whether the patient has an underlying condition or disease, or is taking certain medications that may be causing dry mouth. Medications - if the dry mouth is thought to be caused by a medication, the doctor will either alter the dosage or prescribe another drug, which is less likely to cause dry mouth. Stimulating saliva production - a medication may be prescribed, such as pilocarpine (Salagen) or cevimeline (Evoxac),
Mouthwashes which contain alcohol should be avoided, because they may worsen dry mouth symptoms.
The patient should conduct a daily mouth examination, looking out for unusually colored patches, tooth decay or ulcers. Anything unusual should be reported to

–––––––––––––––––––––– middle of the night and somehow escape authorities by delivering the message-driven "outdoor toilet" to the front of the post office. It was something that mayors, police officials and residents had come to love, and the city had enjoyed a national spotlight for a harmless prank. It was an identity that this community had enjoyed, and generations of families had come to love and look forward to. But this year, for some reason, the plug has been pulled on this iconic ritual, and residents and those who have been involved with this attention-getting idea are not pleased. For some reason, after 82 years, the post office felt that it was enough. But I am not buying it. Even as I was told by an official last week that if the Outhouse was delivered, authorities would be called and those who were part of this "notorious gang" would be arrested. Are you kidding me! Arrested for having fun and bringing a smile to faces that in these times really need that humor. After 82 years, the post office, which has been the resting place for this structure, decided that it was enough. Enough of what? Positive attention that this community sorely needs? Having been part of this Outhouse prank for 50 years, I can respectfully say that this is terri-
ble and it was NOT the decision of the post office. Oh, it may have been a directive that was enforced by the post office, but it was NOT initiated. First of all, to the young lady at the post office who told me emphatically that it was their decision, I look you in the eyes and say: I know everyone in every part of this city, and I have been told exactly why this has been removed, so please save your anger toward this ritual that was in place before you were ever on this earth. Even in an election year, where it had been promised by the Outhouse Gang that nothing locally would be written, the plug was still pulled and because of a few people who were scared that it would harm them in the upcoming election, all the youngsters who have enjoyed having their picture taken through the years, will have to do without this year. It makes me sick to think that this community that so much needs positives is listening to mindless people (person) who has no clue what community pride is all about, living in their small part of the city. I would love to sit here and tell you exactly why this was pulled, but if you know anything about politics in Hallandale Beach, you already know why it happened. This is a small community and everyone pretty much knows each other's business, so figuring out why this was done is not hard. Sadly,
– 954-458-0635 – sfsuntimes@aol.com – www.southfloridasun.net
that is the direction Hallandale Beach has been headed over the past few years.
THE CITY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT Before you rush over to City Hall to complain, this has nothing to do with the City of Hallandale Beach. City Manager Renee Chrichton and her staff have no say in this matter. This has never been a citysponsored event, so please save your calls and letters. If you live in this city, you have a better than average idea who pulled the plug, so please do not bother the City of Hallandale Beach. They have far too many other things to worry about. EDDIE PICKETT HAS BEEN THE INSPIRATION Since he was in junior high school back in 1955, lifelong resident Eddie Pickett had been one of the driving forces behind the Outhouse Gang. His memories of the pranks against city and police officials are priceless. "I sit here and think back to all those smiles on city officials faces," said Pickett, 70. "Back in the 1950s, Commissioner Chancey and Brian Ingalls were heavily involved. These were icons of this city that did so much to promote the community." Pickett also remembers the themes that the Outhouse had every year. Harmless, promotional themes that directed attention to the city and brought in na-
tional news outlets like CNN to cover this one evening. Of all the memories that Pickett recalls, the funniest was back in 1978, when a police officer bragged to everyone for weeks how he would be the one to stop history and make an arrest. That never happened. "We kept hearing this officer tell everyone in the weeks leading up to Halloween how he was going to go down in history," Pickett recalled. "On the night of the 31st, we made two outhouses. One we delivered to his house, which made him think that he won. But he never knew that we actually had two that year, and while he was basking in his glory, we delivered the other to the post office." From financial icon Bill Moffitt back in the late 20s, early 30s, to Russell Wilson (1962), Ernie Pinto (1972) and Mayor Winkle (1975), the Outhouse Gang always found a way to deliver their product and brought so many smiles to faces. Even the late police chief Tom Magill got involved in the act as he stood in the parking lot of the post office, giving candy to youngsters as they took their photos with the Outhouse. Magill understood how vital the positive exposure was to his city. "It was and still is harmless fun," Pickett said. "Nobody ever got hurt from this being there. All it did was direct positives to the City of Hallandale Beach. Stopping this make no sense at all. It is a slap
in the face to all those who have carried on this fun tradition throughout the years."
THE GREAT PETER BLUESTEN Nobody spoke more favorably about what the Outhouse Gang meant for the community than my uncle, Peter Bluesten. One of the most respected people ever in this community, Peter always looked forward to Halloween night in anticipation of what would be written. But it wasn't what was written that made him smile. It was all the good that it did for the community that he always spoke so fondly of. I remember in the middle 1970s sitting in his office after the Outhouse had his name on it - with humorous messages. He ran over to take photos and was proud to be a part of the iconic ritual. "This is so great for the city," he said. "It's something that has defined our little piece of real estate and has everyone talking about it every year." DOROTHY ROSS REMEMBERS Nobody embraced the "Outhouse Gang" more than longtime politician Dorothy Ross. This is
someone who, while the butt of many of the written messages, still found it to be harmless fun, and great for the community. Ross had been a huge supporter of the Outhouse because of the positives it did for the city she governed for years. It was tremendous public relations for a community that had long been the brunt of many demeaning words. Outlets such as the Hollywood Sun Tattler, Miami Herald, Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel and the hometown Hallandale Digest covered the events every year, taking photos of kids smiling and parents posing for pictures. Ross recalls some of the greatest "Outhouse Gang" moments. Like in 1973, when Lt. David Baxter vowed to bring things to a halt after 47 years. It never happened. Back in 1982, the police dispatched 20 officers to stop the "Gang", but Captain Phil Tranfa and John Cataldo admitted they were once again tricked. Two years later, Mayor Art Cannon, Vice Mayor Sonny Rosenberg and Police Captain Joseph –––––––––––––––––––––– BLUSTEIN, Page 3B

Why Mayor Joy Cooper should be retained as Mayor of Hallandale Beach Pick up any book, on public administration and turn to the chapter on the governing, and you will read consistently the words, consensus building, compromise, negotiate and leadership. An elected body at any level of government, devoid of the forenamed attributes will fail its intended purpose. You need look no further than the current Congress which is the least productive in nearly 70 years. In my 38 years as a city manager and a consultant to local governments, I have both experienced and witnessed confrontational individuals whose intent is to disrupt the very essence of governance. Their sole motivation is self-promotion and aggrandizement. I find Keith London to be such an individual who takes any opportunity to promote himself under the guise of acting as the champion of the people. Not a single other Commissioner that he has served with, past or present supports his antics. In fact, he routinely publicly insults his fellow commissioners. I believe most citizens would agree this personality trait is not a characteristic of leadership. He acts like the kid in class who throws spitballs and pounds his chest in order to garner attention. London brags about voting against the city budget each year, but his only recommendation for reductions in the budget is for the city to eliminate a weekly column providing information to the community in the local newspaper. Maybe he is correct on this issue, although I am told a citizen survey indicates the community likes the information. Where are Mr. London’s solutions, recommendations or changes for reducing the budget? I ask you Mr. London, what services would you reduce and what departments or programs would you cut; point these out and be specific. Maybe then, an intelligent conversation can take place before the public. I do not believe there will be any recommendations forthcoming from Keith London as his real motive is to ingratiate himself before the public as a great protector of their tax dollars. According to numerous professors of scholarly work, leadership is the most significant trait a Mayor must possess. Peter G. Northouse, Ph.D, a professor of communication in the School of Communication at Western Michigan University, has written more than 30 books and journals and is considered to be one of the foremost experts on leadership. According to Northouse, leadership,” is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.” In the process of seeking consensus, a leader must maintain a communicative relationship with all involved parties. Unfortunately, Keith London has an antagonistic relationship with all existing and past elected officials he has worked with on the Hallandale Beach City Commission. His leadership style would alienate other elected officials and therefore the legislative process would be in gridlock. On the other hand, Mayor Joy Cooper has displayed the leadership qualities to advance the city forward even in the midst of a recession. Taxes have remained at the same ad valorem rate for the past four years and fees for services are lower than most other Broward County municipalities. I would highly recommend to the citizens of Hallandale Beach that Mayor Joy Cooper be retained in office.

A PASSION FOR WAFFLES, HAMBURGERS AND CARS
Waffleworks owner Sergio Goldvarg serves up much more than tasty food at his Hollywood restaurant Your chance to see the Batmobile
FAMILY
By Suzanne Wallace Sun Times HOLLYWOOD Owner Sergio Goldvarg is quick to point out that his place, in addition to having waffles no one else has, also serves 40 kinds of sweet and savory crepes, and much more (check out the menu)! But wait until you taste their incredibly delicious gourmet hamburgers made with 100% Nebraska Angus beef. Now that’s a hamburger! Now in it’s 10 year anniversary and with 16 indoor tables and booths and five more tables outdoors in front of the restaurant, Waffleworks is roomy enough for a party or a dinner out with your family. It easily accommodates 75 hungry diners from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and starting November 1st, they will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. seven days a week! Yes you read that right...Waffleworks is now also open for dinner! Although Goldvarg’s Waffleworks is a point of pride for him, his interest in cars is his main passion. He’s always been a car enthusiast and an avid collector since the age of six while growing up in his native Argentina. As he tells it, “I emerged from the womb with a love for cars. It’s very strange. I can’t tell you why I
have always loved them because growing up; no one in my family was into cars.” He insists that neither his teacher mom nor his doctor dad had anything to do with inspiring him to follow his passion for cars. Although, they did contribute “as his partners in crime” when they gave him a Frenchmade 1956 model Jaguar as a gift on his 6th birthday. To this day, he still

You read that right! We’re talking about the classic car from the “Batman” series and its here, folks. Sergio owns it! That Batmobile will be on display – right in

has that car – and a few more! His love for cars has inspired him to grow his “real” car collection to a dozen classics. Among them are a 1961 Renault Dauphine, 1962 Volvo P-1800 (the “Saint’s” car in the TV show of the same name starring Roger Moore), 1963 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spirit Bertone (formerly an official Alfa Racing Team car), 1958 NSU Prinz,
front of Waffleworks – on Saturday and Sunday, October 27th and 28th from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. both days. Goldvarg will appear in his own Batman costume on that Sunday. In case you are wondering this is not for Halloween. Sergio has actually done this before. Many times! For example, Sergio drove his Batmobile to the “National Night Out

preciation of the Goldvarg/Batmobile appearance that night. Sergio also drives his Batmobile the “Toys For Tots” charity event with Sheriff Al Lamberti sitting in Robin’s seat. Waffleworks is also the site of the Classic Car Cruise. The Antique Automobile Club of America and the Mercedes Benz Club of Fort Lauderdale proudly participated with car owners parking their cars in front of the restaurant. In addition to the “real” motorized vehicle collection, Weston resident Goldvarg boast the world’s largest collection of model cars. But don’t take our word for it. Sergio Goldvarg is the twice World Record Holder in the Guinness Book of Records with the world’s largest collection of scale model cars with 12,000 cars in the 1/43-to-1/18-scale size range, in 2005 and
gio’s Waffleworks, together with TV and movie cars memorabilia. Even the menu is an attraction in itself, loaded with pictures of movie cars and on the last page you have the name of the actor, and movie, so you can guess which car it is, and then check the answer. That’s fun! Sergio certainly hasn’t left his wife and kids out of the automo-
tive mix. During their 24 year marriage, wife Mariana has become a car expert in her own right as well as a Batman aficionado. When they call one another on their cell phones the Goldvargs ringers play the Batman theme. The Golvargs 20 year old son, Kevin is a Rally aficionado and does all kinds of Driftings and Drawings in his Peter Solberg Tribute Subaru STI. Katia, their 18 year old daughter used to drive in Argentina when she was only 6 years old. She has that “Goldvarg car fan blood” in her veins. And 10 year old daughter, Karen is not an exception. She has been a big Formula 1 fan since she was a very little girl. She knows all the F1 Teams and Drivers. As we established earlier, Waffleworks owner, Sergio Goldvarg comes for the food but gets into the cars. He invites you to come to Waffleworks for the cars...and get into the food. Either way you are in for a wonderful experience because the cars are great and the food is delicious! Come check it out!

CELEBRATING HALLOWEEN
From patch to table: the many uses of a pumpkin
(BPT) - While pumpkins are most often associated with holiday pies, don't underestimate this favorite of the squash and gourd family. Not only is the mighty pumpkin delicious, but it is also quite the multitasker. “Pumpkins are incredibly versatile. They can be used in virtually any application,” says Chef Joseph Brown, culinary chair at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Raleigh - Durham, a campus of South University. From sweet to savory, desserts to dinners, Brown and Chef Arthur Inzinga, culinary instructor at The International Culinary School at
The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, offer tips and ideas for making the most of your pumpkins. Pumpkin can be added to a variety of dishes to provide textural elements as well as flavor. “When pumpkin is cooked down it is very similar to mashed potatoes, but more sweet and flavorful,” says Brown. “It brings a sweetness to the table, which is its most unique aspect.” He adds that anywhere a potato is being cut up and cooked, pumpkin would be a good addition and/or substitution. Pureed pumpkin can be added to a variety of sauces and soups, and according to Inzinga,
“pumpkin is used a lot in conjunction with pasta.” He recommends using it as a filling in gnocchi: “Typically, gnocchi is made with potato puree. You can substitute pumpkin puree.” Brown also notes it can be used as a filling for ravioli. Adding the bold flavor of pumpkin to a variety of dishes can be achieved with some simple substitutions. Pumpkin chili can be created by augmenting some of the stock and tomato with pureed pumpkin. “This brings a richness to the chili. The pumpkin is going to be as much a textural component as it is a flavorful item,” says Brown. He also adds
Sweet Eats, Adorable Treats: Fun Food for Fall (NewsUSA) - If you're looking for a fun treat for Halloween or any time this fall, you can't go wrong with these "No Eek, No Squeak Cookie Cuties." Full of nutrients and energy, California Raisins provide a delicious burst of flavor to these cookies. All-natural and dried-by-the-sun, California Raisins deliver fiber, potassium and antioxidants, and just a quarter cup of raisins provides a serving of fruit. NO EEK, NO SQUEAK COOKIE CUTIES 3 cups all-purpose flour - 1/2 teaspoon salt - 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter - 3/4 cup sugar - 2 teaspoons vanilla extract - 1 large egg - 1/2 cup California raisins, chopped finely - 1/4 cup sliced natural almonds, for the ears - 4 30-inch black licorice laces, cut into 4-inch lengths, for the tails - 3 ounces semisweet chocolate mini chips, for the eyes In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and salt, set aside. In another bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until creamy, about 2 minutes. Gradually, add sugar, beating until mixture is pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in vanilla extract, then the egg. Reducing the speed, gradually add one-third of the flour, until mixed, add another third and another third until blended. Knead in the finely chopped California Raisins. Half the dough, flatten into two disks, wrap in plastic wrap, chill for 2 hours. Pre-heat oven to 350 degreeF. Roll about 1 tablespoon, shaping the dough in an oval. Gently pinch bridge of the nose to form eye sockets. Place two sliced almonds at top of each piece of dough, and place two mini chocolates for the eyes below the ears, pressing them gently into the dough. Place the mice on parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing the mice 2 inches apart. Bake until the cookies are light golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. ature up to one week.
that pumpkin and tomato go together beautifully. This can be seen in autumn or pumpkin pizza, where the pumpkin becomes part of the sauce. Brown likes to top his pumpkin pizza with barbequed chicken. Inzinga recommends juicing some of the pumpkin pulp and using it as the cooking liquid for risotto or mixing equal parts pureed pumpkin to mashed potatoes. “It can be used as an ingredient in pancakes and waffles to replace some of the liquid and add flavor,” he says. Pumpkin can also take center stage in dishes such as pumpkin-based bread puddings and ice creams and pumpkin butter. Inzinga says pumpkin butter is much like apple butter and can be created by adding pumpkin pie spices and cooking the pumpkin down until it is a spreadable consistency. He also recommends pumpkin/apple smooth-
ies made with pureed pumpkin, apple juice and a bit of yogurt. Enjoy the full flavor of the pumpkin by dicing and roasting with other root vegetables, sauteing it to bring out its natural flavors or even putting it on the grill. Brown says the slow heat of the grill brings out natural sugars, removes moisture and condenses the flavor. Don't forget that the flesh isn't the only part of the pumpkin that can be used. The seeds can be roasted and used as a garnish on breads, muffins or on pumpkin soup; added to homemade granola; or pureed into sauces and pesto. According to Inzinga, the flower blossoms can be battered and fried or stuffed and baked. Both chefs even recommend using hollowed-out pumpkins as bowls and tureens for chili or soup. “It's important for people to realize that when you go pumpkin picking,
those pumpkins are grown for their size and shape, not necessarily flavor,” says Brown. The large pumpkins are less sweet. He says there are hundreds of varieties of pumpkins, and you can get more sweetness and flavor if you are more selective. He recommends allaboutpumpkins.com as a reference for the characteristics of different types of pumpkins. Tips for roasting a pumpkin: To roast a pumpkin, Brown recommends roasting it at 350 to 375 F for a medium-length roasting time. The flesh will brown a bit. For a more concentrated flavor, roast at 300 F for a longer period of time and bump the temperature up to 425 F for the last 15 to 20 minutes. Pumpkins are a lot like potatoes - you can tell if they are done by touch. They will get softer the longer they cook.

Hollywood customers can avoid waiting in line to pay utility bill By Doreen Lam, City Treasurer HOLLYWOOD - Available online methods make paying utility bills easy and convenient from the comfort of home or while on the go - - here’s how! In the age of computers and mobile devices that we live in, the City has been striving to find ways to make bill paying easier and faster for its utility customers. The City of Hollywood is pleased to announce that over 20,000 utility customers are currently using the City’s website to view and/or pay their monthly utility bills. If you’re not already registered, you can join the many who are by going to the City’s website at www.hollywoodfl.org and signing up to view and pay your utility bill. Once registered, you can access the “Payment Center” on the main webpage any time you wish to make a payment. Online payments can be made by credit card (VISA, MC or AMX), or by using a debit card with a VISA or MasterCard logo. To make accessing your utility account even faster the next time you visit to make a payment, don’t forget to either create a shortcut to the login page or “bookmark” it on your computer. Need to make a payment today? Payments made by 12:00 noon weekdays will be credited to your account the same day. Always on the go? You can also access your utility account and make payment using the internet from your smart phone, tablet or other mobile device. The second way you can pay your bill online is to use the “Online Bill Pay” service of the financial institution where you bank. In the past, customers using their bank’s online bill pay service experienced delays in getting their payments posted timely to their utility accounts. This is because most banks pay their customers’ online requests by paper check, and not electronically. The good news is the City now uses an “ebox” service that collects all the online bill payment requests made each day by utility customers through their banks. The service then makes the payments electronically versus by paper check. With the ebox service, your payment now posts to your utility account within two business days after your bank processes your Online Bill Pay request. What’s the “bottom line”? Pay online and save time! For more information, please visit the Payment Center on the City’s website, or contact the City’s Treasury Services Division at 954.921.3232.
Hallandale police gave chase in two siren-squealing squad cars only to be outmaneuvered by the gang. A dozen Outhouse Gang members gave police the slip, zipping off to the post office, depositing their outhouse and fleeing before police could flush them out. ``They`re no match

Moticker worked hard to flush the culprits out. They delivered and got away. In 1989, on the 60th anniversary, while police gave chase, they lost the group and later had to read all about it in the local papers. Ross had been a huge supporter throughout the 80s, 90s and into the 2000s, urging city officials and workers to embrace this historic ritual, and they did.
WAY TOO MUCH HISTORY The Outhouse Gang has been so elusive, it has stumped police authorities for years. Even back 1972, when Police Chief George Emmerich's force was set up by the gang, it was all in fun. Just when the Outhouse was being delivered and four officers sat at the post office waiting, a mysterious call came in about a fight at the nearby bar. All four officers were dispatched to the bar, and the Outhouse was delivered. "We were set up," said a laughing police chief. "They are really smart people." In 1985, Mayor Sonny Rosenberg found out how tough it was to stop the five members of the notorious Outhouse Gang, who escaped after completing their Halloween ritual of dumping an outhouse outside the U.S. Post Office for the 57th consecutive year. ``This is probably the oldest organized crime syndicate in the country,`` Rosenberg said. ``We had so many police, and so many in plainclothes, they didn`t know who to arrest,`` Rosenberg explained of the collapse of Hallandale`s finest. ``And you know how some of those police officers look even without masks.`` City Manager R.J. Intindola had guaranteed an arrest in the Outhouse Gang caper. In 1989, the motley crew of marauders, crammed into a truck driven by Gang Member Crash, outfoxed Police Chief Richard Fox and his police officers.
for the Outhouse Gang,`` Gang Member X said with glee. ``They couldn`t have caught a jaywalker the way they were going.`` Have something to add to this - and I hope this angers you enough to do something about it. Drop me a note at Floridakids1@aol.com.

Senior Programs a Hit at Cultural Center
‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’
Mayor Joy Cooper
As residents are coming back for season I have been getting many inquires about the Memorial Senior Partners Program. Last Spring Memorial Senior Partners moved
their programs to Hollywood Beach without our city commission knowing. They had given up their lease at the Hallandale Shopping Center and entered into lease agreement with Hollywood. When the members were told about the move I received many calls from residents that have enjoyed the programs for years and they were extremely upset. They wanted me to do something to stop the move. I was
shocked at first that Senior Partners had not reached out to me or the Commission, but I visited the center and started right away to work on a solution. Since the Memorial had already committed to Hollywood, they were not willing to stop the move. I asked that they consider bringing the same programs to our Cultural Community Center and we could partner with free rent if they provided the programming. At that time, I worked im-
Nonprofit Gallery and Studio Planned for Downtown Hollywood Arts District
HOLLYWOOD – A Hollywood couple will combine their love of art and Downtown Hollywood with the opening in a few months of Gallery 2014, a nonprofit gallery and studio that will showcase the works of unestablished artists and help support community organizations. Photographer and painter Elizabeth Sanjuan purchased the 5,000-squarefoot property at 2014-2016 Harrison Street from S & M Lancaster Properties, Inc. on May 16. Ann McQueen of Elite Coastal Properties represented the buyer. When Sanjuan and her husband Ken Brown, also an artist, open Gallery 2014 in late March, the former furniture store will be transformed into an expansive gallery with studio and instructional space for the couple as well as visiting artists. Gallery 2014 will host a series of programs and exhibitions by relatively unknown artists from Broward and Miami-Dade counties and around the world, whose artwork will be available for purchase by the public. "We're highlighting art from people who really haven’t had a chance to be seen," said Brown, who paints in all mediums and draws portraits. "Their work will be moderately priced so that it's very affordable." Part of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation's mission is to assist charitable, arts and educational organizations through fundraising events at Gallery 2014. Brown sits on the board of directors of the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale and is an honorary board member of the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. The couple also has been involved with Hollywood-based Hispanic Unity of Florida and Camillus House for the Homeless in Miami. Brown and Sanjuan have been collecting art pieces for their new gallery for the past five years, most recently during a six-month assignment in Hong Kong for Brown, a partner and managing director of One Equity Partners, a private-equity subsidiary of JPMorgan Chase. mediately with the City Manager and Staff to begin initially setting up cards, Mahjong and bingo. This has worked well during the summer since there are not that many players. These programs were up and running within a week’s time thanks to the hard work of our City Staff. In addition to these games we also moved our line dancing and dance aerobics to the Community Cultural Center. To date these programs are running successfully and will continue. Staff is also working towards adding ballroom dancing. After we opened the programs Staff met with Memorial and drafted a contract. For the benefit of reducing the rent, the agreement included that Memorial would provide staff to monitor the programming and work with any instructors that would be providing classes. The partnership would also cover liability issues with the instructors. The contract has now been sitting in Memorial offices without being executed. I have been told that after evaluating their budget they may be unable to fulfill the commitment of staffing. Our staff is still working with them but is now
evaluating whether the partnership would be beneficial or if it would be better for us to manage and provide the service in house. We also are evaluating partnering with other agencies. We do currently partner with H2U for the line dancing and exercise classes. To date there are other organizations that provide an array of services. Staff is also working on grant opportunities through the USDA and other agencies that help with senior programming. Many seniors are thrilled that these programs are now at the Cultural Center. The biggest benefit is that we have a free minimum bus service that will link many of our seniors that are unable to drive. I am personally happy I was able to work with Staff and address our seniors’ concern about not having these recreational activates to enjoy. I am also excited that we are looking to expand programs. All of our seniors can rest assured that no matter what happens with Memorial we will have the programs they enjoy and are looking for. Our Parks Department has been moving forward with many new projects and programs. Foster Park is up and running with a micro li-
brary computer and workout room. DPW is working to retrofit our Teen Center at OB Johnson Park. We are also working on Laser leveling our open space at Blustein Park and our new expanded Sunrise Parks. During the last Commission meeting we discussed acquiring the Post Office parcel to complete the lands assembly for Bluestein Park. The Commission deferred the item to adopt a resolution agreeing for the City Manager to begin preparation for the revenue bond until next meeting for further information. The revenue bond for both the Fire Station and this land parcel were proposed to be combined. The Commission will discuss the matter further and will review the GEO Bond Referendum during the November 7th meeting. Remember Early Voting begins this Saturday from 7-7 at various locations including our Hallandale Beach Cultural Center. As always please feel free to contact me at any time with your questions and concerns at my office 954-4571318 or cell/text 954632-5700 or e-mail me at www.MayorJoyCooper.com.

LEVITT-WEINSTEIN MEMORIAL
Levitt-Weinstein, Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert has long focused on the needs and traditions of the Jewish community, and it offers services for those who want traditional burials. However, its services are available to everyone. No one is turned away because of financial hardship. By Jana Soeldner Danger Sun Times When a loved one passes away, family members need someone who cares to guide them through the grief and shock. Staff at Levitt & Weinstein Memorial Chapels & Cemeteries, in partnership with Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert, has been offering the kind of individualized, caring service that families can trust for more than 50 years. The privately held company is operated by the third generation of its founding families. “Our goal is to meet the needs of families in ways that are personally tailored to their desires,” says area sales director Marc Rubin. “The death of a loved one is one of life’s most difficult experiences, and we understand that it is a privilege when a family trusts us to help them through it.” When you call Levitt & Weinstein, you will never get an answering service. “We have staff members on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so anyone who calls gets a personal response,” Rubin Explained. Levitt & Weinstein is a family managed firm that personalizes every step of planning and holding a funeral or memorial service. “When you come to us, you’re not ordering off a menu like you might be with some other companies,” Marc says. “Instead, we cus-
The Place To Trust in Time of Need tomize the arrangements and final resting places exactly according to what the family wishes. For us, it’s never about what’s good for business or for the cemetery. It’s about what the family desires.”
CUSTOMIZED MONUMENTS "A stone or monument is an age-old way of remembering a loved one, and individuals have many different desires concerning them, Rubin said. “Some people want just the name and dates of birth and death,” he says. “Others want pictures on the stones, or poetry or favorite sayings. We can custom design a stone or monument to fit just about every request.” Rubin recalls one family who wanted a monument in the shape of a tennis racquet. “The deceased family member was an avid player throughout life, so that’s how they wanted him to be remembered,” said Rubin. “We also had a wife who requested a monument carved in the shape of a cowboy hat like the one her husband always wore.” A final resting place is also very personal, and Levitt & Weinstein helps the family fulfill their desires. One family requested a location overlooking a lake in a park-like setting, and staff found exactly the right spot. “Another family wanted
Unlike many funeral businesses, Levitt & Weinstein is still privately owned rather than part of a publicly traded company.
something very private, so we created a gated area that no one could enter without permission,” Rubin pointed out. Another family wanted a private mausoleum that would accommodate eight people. “We custom built one exactly to order,” he said. Unlike many funeral businesses, Levitt & Weinstein is still privately owned rather than part of a publicly traded company. “At a time of grief, people want to deal with someone they know they can count on, someone who is part of the community,” said Rubin. “They have that with us. Our directors have more than 100 combined years of arranging experience, and because we are privately owned, we
can make decisions quickly.”
PRE-PLANNING CAN HELP Pre-planning can make the funeral process just a bit easier for those left behind. “The individual can be sure that he or she will get exactly what he or she wishes, and the family doesn’t have to wonder if they are doing the right thing,” Rubin explained. “Families are under a lot of stress at a time of bereavement, and there can be disagreements and hard feelings. With preplanning, there’s none of that, because everything has been taken care of. And there are also financial advantages.” Although about 90 percent of the families Levitt-Weinstein serves choose preplanning, it can be difficult to get some people to think about the process. “You plan for a vacation, a wedding, a bar mitzvah or a birthday party,” said Rubin. “It’s just as important to plan a funeral. Why put the burden of those decisions on your family? Planning eliminates misunderstanding and makes it much easier for your loved ones.” He continues, “It’s just another part of estate planning, like making a will. If you make a plan, you can arrange to pay for it over a pe-
riod of time, without interest charges. When you need it, your family will not have to deal with the additional burden of expenses as well as the financial burden that is placed
on the family on their worst day."
MANY LOCATIONS. LONG DISTANCE ARRANGEMENTS Levitt-Weinstein has cemeteries and memorial chapels in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties, and it is the only one in Palm Beach itself. They can ship your loved one anywhere in the country, and can make long distance arrangements anywhere in the world. Levitt-Weinstein, Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert has long focused on the needs and traditions of the Jewish community, and it offers services for those who want traditional burials. However, its services are available to everyone. No one is turned away because of financial hardship. “Everyone is welcome,” Marc says. “It is our goal to serve anyone who needs us.”

Hosts Ninth Annual Ladies' Spa Day for Cancer Patients
MOUNT SINAI COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER
MIAMI BEACH - On October 23, The Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center hosted its ninth annual Ladies’ Spa Day. Approximately 60 women attended the event, all of whom are current cancer patients receiving treatment at Mount Sinai or cancer survivors. The women enjoyed a day of pampering and relaxation while also being provided with helpful information to manage their cancer. Attendees indulged in complimentary beauty services such as manicures, massages, hair styling, facials and wig care. Saks Fifth Avenue Bal Harbour, a recent partner of the Mount Sinai Cancer Center for the annual Key To The Cure event, also attended and provided make-up appli-
cation services. In addition to beauty treatments, the women were invited to participate in energy therapy, meditation and yoga sessions. Among the survivors at this event was Ada Nimo,
It’s Time to Vote
Well folks this is it.. In less than a week’s time we will decide on who will be our President. As a rule, I do not publically endorse candidates of any party, whether it be on a federal, state, or local level…. But there are some basic questions I ask myself when considering who to vote for, that I’d like to share with you…. 1. Who’s Being Straight With Us?… Who has been most forthright in presenting their accomplishments and beliefs?... Who has been the most transparent about the way they perform and keep the public’s trust?… Pictures of politicians kissing babies, and wrapping oneself in the flag, are poor excuses of form over substance…. Incredibly some politicians have justified not offering the public detailed plans on positions they takes because they might be challenged on the details of their positions… How ridiculous! 2. Who Can Get The Job Done done?… It’s great that a candidate is honest, and squeaky clean, but if he or she lacks the power and finesse to get important legislature through congress, well then, this just may not be the right job for them. 3. Who’s Thinking Like Me?... Who best represents my ethics and values, and is not afraid to say so. 4. Who do I want in the cock-pit when the ride gets bumpy?... Who will keep their cool during emergencies, and national disaster, and be efficient in providing relief for those in trouble 5. Who’s emotionally stable?..Really would rather pick someone who enjoys life, and doesn’t mind that others do also, while being able to handle the enormous stress that comes with the job 6. Who will be a visionary?.. We do not need a narrow-minded party affiliate, entangled in the throes of mediocrity… We need someone with a vision of greatness that will lead this nation to new outstanding heights. 7. Who’s got my back?.. Who will be up to task for protecting this great country from those who would do us harm?… Probably this is the most important issue that concerns us all Neighbors…, get out and vote! .Early voting and absentee ballots avoid lines... Whatever the outcome, let’s hope that our country can be a bit more tolerant of each other’s differences.. Good luck at the polls… G-d Bless America and may the best man, or woman win. Dr. Ron Dr. Ron is in private practice in Hallandale Florida, and an…. Have a question?… You can contact Dr. Ronald J. Schlossberg Psy.D; ( Licensed Clinical Psychologist by mail: 1250 E. who was diagnosed with breast cancer ten years ago and received her treatments at Mount Sinai. “I have been coming to this event since it started because I feel it is important to treat yourself and remind yourself of your beauty within, especially when cancer treatments can wreak havoc on how your self esteem and how you feel you look,” said Nimo. “But, mainly, it’s important to have the opportunity to meet and talk to other
women who are going, or have gone through, the same thing you did. There is support amongst all the women here.” Information on healthy eating and integrative medicine were also presented by Mike Cusnir, M.D., an oncologist at Mount Sinai. A special appearance by the current Mrs. Florida, Teresa Sheffield, who is also a nurse at the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center, empowered many of the women to realize
that confidence and beauty, truly come from
within.

INSIDE: SUN TIMES FOOD RECIPES
GLOBAL JEWELRY BUYING HOUSE By Suzanne Wallace Sun Times SUNNY ISLES BEACH - You saw an ad for Global Jewelry Buying House and wanted to learn more before you trusted your jewelry to them. You called and they told you to come to their Buying House at 18090 Collins Avenue, Boutique No. T-13 in Sunny Isles Beach. Not knowing what to expect, you brought only a couple of pieces of unwanted jewelry and a silver service, no longer in use. Upon arrival, you were buzzed into the store by their private security officer and were met in the lobby by the Director of Buying, Danny. He took you down a warm and inviting hallway to one of several boutique-like rooms. You were asked if you would like coffee or water and was served your bottled water in a crystal stemmed glass. Danny took out a purchase form, wrote your name and date on the form and after opening up his jewelers light, asked to see what you had brought. He examined your two pieces of jewelry and wrote a value on the form next
to a description and then looked at your silver and assessed its value. At that point, you had a decision to make...sell it now or take your copy of the purchase form to show your wife. You decided the price was certainly fair and sold your jewelry for cash. You took your silver service back home to make sure your wife agreed with the sale and showed her the purchase form with the price that was offered. Your wife agreed it was a good price so tomorrow you will take it back, along with the purchase order, and be given the price listed. What’s more, you have decided to take some more jewelry that has been lying in a jewelry box for years and cash it in too. That is a typical experience at the Global Jewelry Buying House. They have been doing business in New York for 30 years and are now beginning their rapid expansion. MORE PLANNED FOR SOUTH FLORIDA Three new Buying
COINS, GOLD AND MUCH MORE They specialize in American Eagle coins. They buy scrap gold, 10k, 14k, 18k, and unlike some, they are the top buyers of gold filled. They buy silver, platinum, rings, bracelets, necklaces, cufflinks, money clips, earrings, chains, brooches, watches, key chains, dental gold, class rings, pins, estate jewelry, collectibles, fine art and much more.
Global Jewelry Buying House. They have been doing business in New York for 30 years and are now beginning their rapid expansion - right here in Sunny Isles Beach.
Houses are in the works in the Sunny Isles Beach area and more planned in the South Florida area. One of the things that make this business unique, other than their boutique look, is that they don’t sell jewelry at their locations; they only buy from the public. Because they are a well-known International Jewelry Buying House, they have customers world-wide who buy from them. They provide a liquid global market for previously
owned jewelry and for that reason; they are able to offer the highest prices to you. They are the leading global buyer of fine jewelry, diamonds and watches from the public. A GIA Certified Gemologist is on site to examine your diamonds.
CONVERTING GOLD AND DIAMONDS INTO CASH It’s a new concept-the modern way to sell your fine jewelry. You can convert your collection of estate jewelry or dia-
monds for cold hard cash. Good to know in these economic times. Although it was pointed out that most of their customers aren’t selling because they need the money...they are selling because their lifestyle has changed and they no longer need or want the silver or jewelry.
GLOBAL JEWELRY BUYING HOUSE IS THE LARGEST GOLD BUYER IN SOUTH FLORIDA Best of all, you are treated in a professional manner and if you are worried about your security, you will be escorted to your car by their security guard. It’s a no worry, no hassle, and great way to sell your jewelry, watches or collectibles.

Five simple, nutritious lunch box swaps
(BPT) - For students, going to school isn't just about understanding reading, writing and arithmetic; it's also about learning the importance of good nutrition. Healthy eating takes center stage in the lunch room, so when your children open their lunch boxes, are they hitting a healthy home run, or striking out? “Now is the perfect time to rethink what you're purchasing and packing in your child's lunch box so that you can start new, healthier eating habits, which can be continued throughout the year,” says Danielle Omar, registered dietitian and author of the “Busy Woman's Guide To Stress-Free Grocery
drinks for milk, which is more nutritious. Moms can even find milk that comes in single-serve boxes for a convenient lunch box alternative to juice drinks. Horizon Organic offers several single-serve options including low-fat original, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry flavors. Organic milk is also produced without the use of antibiotics, persistent pesticides or added growth hormones. 2. Whole-grain bread replaces white bread Kids need at least 17 grams of fiber per day, according to the government's most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans. That's why moms should swap white bread, which is
Shopping.” “Making small changes can have a big impact, especially at lunch when kids need good-for-you foods that provide nutrients like fiber and vitamins to properly refuel for the rest of their day.” For parents, it can be difficult to know which foods to pack and which to eliminate. Omar offers five lunch box swaps that are easy, healthy and affordable. Consider these simple swaps when packing a child's lunch: 1. Milk boxes replace juice boxes A diet rich in calcium and protein is vital for active and growing children. That's why I recommend swapping sugar-laden fruit juice
heavily refined and lacks many essential nutrients, for whole-grain bread, which will help give kids the fiber they need. I like Sandwich and Bagel Flatz from Rudi's Organic Bakery because they're a nutritious, easy-to-pack option with 3 to 5 grams of fiber and 23 to 25 grams of whole grains per serving. 3. Apple slices replace fruit snacks Apple slices are easy to cut up and place in a lunch box, and they help ensure that your child gets closer to their recommended one to two servings of fruit each day, as advised by the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In contrast, fruit snacks are
SHAKE OFF THE SALT HABIT
(NewsUSA) - "Lose the salt shaker, and you'll improve your health," said David H. Stone, MD, a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery. "Adding table salt (sodium chloride) to your food increases your overall salt intake, especially when eating out or when consuming ready-to-eat foods. When it comes to salt, less is more." As a vascular surgeon, Dr. Stone knows that increased salt intake can contribute to high blood pressure. Also known as hypertension, the condition can lead to a stroke or heart attack. Hypertension is defined as blood pressure that is measured at more than 140 / 90. High blood pressure affects 74.5 million or one-third of American adults, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' "Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010." The National Institutes of Health recommends that Americans consume one tablespoon (2,400 milligrams) or less of salt per day. For at-risk Americans -- which includes about half the U.S. population (African Americans, people over age 51, people with high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease) -- the daily salt recommendation is 1,500 milligrams or less. As vascular conditions, stroke and heart attack are among the leading causes of death in American adults. On average, American adults consume 3,266 milligrams of salt daily according to a 2012 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report. Seventy-five percent of daily salt intake comes from prepared foods from restaurants or stores. The five most consumed salt culprits are: * Bread and rolls * Cold cuts/cultured meats * Pizza * Fresh and processed poultry * Soup In an effort to prevent one million strokes and heart attacks over the next five years, sodium reduction is a goal of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Million Hearts initiative co-led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A reduction of 11 percent (360 milligrams) of salt daily could avert 28,000 deaths and save $7 billion in healthcare costs annually. "Overall, fresh fruits, vegetables and meats prepared in the home are the healthiest choices," said Dr. Stone.
often full of sugar (including high fructose corn syrup) and artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. Moms can also consider choosing organic apples over their conventional counterparts since, according to The Organic Center, apples tend to have one of the highest pesticide risks. If you're strapped for time, Earthbound Farms offers presliced organic apples - a simple lunchtime solution. 4. Veggies replace chips Chips are often paired with sandwiches or wraps. A better alternative: veggies. While it can be tricky to get kids to eat their vegetables, there are many options that can get the thumbsup from even the pickiest children. Consider trying cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, snap peas and cucumbers. A fun and delicious option is ants-on-a-log - which is celery topped with

Lean proteins replace some deli meats A well-balanced lunch should include at least one source of protein, which will help give your child the energy they need in and out of the classroom. However, instead of deli meats like ham or salami, which often have higher levels of fat and sodium, consider leaner proteins like turkey or sliced chicken. When selecting meats, consider looking for organic varieties like Applegate Farms, which aren't exposed to antibiotics or added growth hormones. If you prefer to give your kids protein from non-meat sources, hard-boiled eggs, nuts, or soy products like edamame are great lunch box alternatives.
