When it comes to breast cancer awareness, the month of October has watched the entire country embrace this important and life-changing disease.

As she spoke to those who wanted to find out more, she continued to relive a painful story that began when she was 44. The only thing that Dr. Roger Nydick and Dr. Adrian Salmon had in common before visiting Dr. Stanley Braverman for corrective eye surgery is they both had suffered from poor vision that prevented each from living a normal and productive life. • Suffering from poor vision that prevented each from living a normal and productive life, Dr. Roger Nydick and Dr. Adrian Salmon turned to Dr. Stanley Braverman for corrective eye surgery

Braverman From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ley Braverman, the decision was a simple one. The 63-year-old, who had practiced Family Medicine in the area for decades, was in need of Cataract surgery in both eyes. The premium surgery that he chose to correct his cataracts and severe farsightedness would require Tecnis Multifocal Lenses with a relaxing incision to correct the astigmatism in both eyes, giving him good unaided distance and near vision. While the surgery was something that Dr. Nydick needed, there was one major problem. Being on Coumadin to maintain his artificial heart valve, he was not the best of candidates. The blood thinner that he could not be off of was a major obstacle standing in the way of the life-altering surgery that would allow him not only to see and feel better, but remove the glasses he had been wearing for over 40 years. “Having to be on the blood thinner because of my heart condition, I never thought that I would be able to have the surgery performed,” Dr. Nydick recalled. “When I sat down to talk with Dr. Braverman, he assured me, because cataract surgery is bloodless surgery, that we could still do both eyes without having to get off of the medication. That was great to hear.” Because he knew Dr. Braverman’s reputation, and had followed the success stories that have unfolded at the Braverman Eye Center, Dr. Nydick scheduled the first ½ hour procedure to be done in June – and then followed up the next month with the other eye. Working at Memorial Hospital Hollywood and Miramar in Hospice, Dr. Nydick had many restrictions that he had to work around because of his cataracts. Wearing sunglasses to cut the glare from the computer screen and normal outside light, and needing the assistance of his wife Carolyn because of his reduced vision from cataracts, he was more than ready for the procedure that would change his life. “I cannot say enough about the entire process,” he explained. “From the office staff to the way Dr. Braverman went over the entire procedure with me, it was a tremendous experience. Within two days, I was a changed person. It’s been three months now, and I am back to exercising and living my life to the fullest. I only wish I had done the surgery earlier!” THE BUILDING WAS A HUGE ATTRACTION Moving to Hallandale Beach within the past year, Dr. Salmon, who practices Critical Care, Internal Medicine and Physical Therapy, had worn glasses for over 20 years and suffered from severe farsightedness and astigmatism that altered the quality of his life and work in a major way. Because he is active, and loves to participate in all sports, Dr. Salmon was limited due to the condition in both eyes. Fixing them would require a Hyperopic Bladeless Z-Lasik procedure; but being new to the area, it was a visit to the Diplomat Mall for dinner that first grabbed his attention. The Braverman Eye Center was one of those buildings that drew him in. “I had passed by the building a few times and there was something about it that got me thinking,” Dr. Salmon recalled. “Being someone who has always researched everything, I looked Dr. Braverman up on the internet and was impressed with the many positives about his work. I also started asking around, and everyone I spoke with talked so highly about him.” Because his job required reading X-rays and being so detailed, vision was a huge part of what Dr. Salmon was about. Surgery that would correct his deteriorating eyesight would indeed change his life. “I can remember making an appointment to see Dr. Braverman and listening to everything he said about the entire process and what it would entail,” Dr. Salmon pointed out. “Because I am the same way with my patients, he sold me right away. He went over every step of the procedure and was up front with the pros and cons. That is the only way a doctor should be.” Unlike Dr. Nydick who opted for two separate procedures, the late July LASIK surgery was done on both of Dr. Salmon’s eyes, – and after a blurry first day – the second day, he began to see clearer and has improved ever since. “The entire experience was amazing and really changed my life,” he explained. WHAT ARE CATARACTS A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range. CATARACT SURGERY: What to expect Cataract surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. An artificial lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, and Dr. Braverman's newly trademarked LACE™ procedure. Laser Assisted Cataract Extraction (LACE™) surgery, if you are deemed a candidate, can nearly always guarantee that the patient will need no glasses for distance vision, and no glasses for distance or near vision if a multifocal lens implant is used. WHAT TO EXPECT WITH Z-LASIK SURGERY

Topical anesthetic drops are applied to the eye. The surgeon first uses a special Ziemer LDV femtosecond laser to create a thin layer of corneal tissue that can be folded back (a corneal flap). Then, another type of laser (an Allegretto Eye-Q excimer laser) is used to reshape the underlying cornea, painlessly. After the excimer laser treatment, the corneal flap is repositioned and bonds back into place naturally. The corneal reshaping improves the focusing power of the cornea. Although no one can promise patients “perfect” vision, most Laser Vision Correction patients with mild to moderate prescriptions with or without astigmatism, do achieve 20/20 or better vision. Evening on the Front Porch Neighborhood Block Party attracts huge crowd for event

From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––– ly a decade of countless trips to the doctor for gut-wrenching chemo treatments and being prodded and poked at so many times, she cried from the pain. Hopper is a survivor. She has the physical and emotional scars to prove it - and as she sat in the chair at this important Breast Cancer Awareness event in Miami, she was giving back to the fact that she is now in remission and wanted to share her experiences with those who attended in hopes that they would never have to go through what she has lived since 2005. "I never paid attention to any of this before because I was one that didn't think it would ever affect me," she said. "I was healthy, ate right, ran marathons and was simply immune to anything that would resemble cancer." Hopper lives in North Miami and remembers the day she couldn't get out of bed in the morning because of a pain that she ignored for over two weeks. Her husband had told her several times to at least go and get checked out, but she was too stubborn and in her mind, too healthy for cancer to ravage her body. With no family history

of the disease, Hopper learned a painful lesson. One that she has continued to preach the past decade since being diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. "I simply was stunned to find out that I had cancer," she recalled. "I sat there and cried the entire day and feeling sorry for myself. But I did find out that Stage 2 means the breast cancer is growing, but it is still contained in one area. But that if I didn't get it checked out, I would have been gone." During the next six months, Hopper's life changed. Her entire lifestyle changed - and she admits - she was starting to learn about the disease the way she should have years before. "My neglect almost cost me my life," she recalled. "That is why I am here today and have continued to preach the word to everyone who will listen. Early detection can really save lives and I am living proof." The focus on cancer has now become something people watch and listen to year round - and as October has been designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month across the country, we are all reminded about how serious this disease is. From local high schools and businesses to the National Football League, wearing pink during October is a

stark reminder that this is something that everyone needs to keep focused on. With local football players at schools such as Hallandale, Hollywood Hills, South Broward, Dr. Krop and Chaminade-Madonna wearing pink as part of their uniforms, it makes youngsters aware that cancer, especially breast cancer does indeed exist and can tear families apart. "Knowledge is so key to anything," said Maria Ramirez, who attended the event with her mother, who just happens to be a two-time cancer survivor. "Before my mother had cancer, I never gave much thought to the disease. It was like everyone gets it but me. Now, I go for mammograms every year and get screened for cancer." Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and the secondmost common cancer overall. In 2014, an estimated 232,030 cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. alone. So no matter who you are or where you live, under-

Early voting will start throughout the state from October 20th to November 2nd from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - This coming Monday, early voting will start throughout the state from October 20th to November 2nd from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Broward residents can vote at any Broward early voting site. We have early voting at our Community Cultural Center on Southwest 3rd Avenue only minutes away. There are many issues on this ballot that will impact our everyday lives. Do not wait, go and vote. Obviously, the Governor’s race is front and center, but this should not be the only thing you vote on. You should vote on every item all the way down the ballot. There are elected official positions on all levels of government. There are also state questions, county questions and our Parks GO Bond. Commission Seat 1 held by Commissioner Anthony Sanders and Seat 2 held by Commissioner Leo Grachow are on the ballot too! Every vote does count. When voting, you need a form of picture ID. You can vote by absentee ballot and can request one up to the Wednesday before the election. You must

mail it or drop off to the Supervisor of Elections office in Fort Lauderdale before 7 p.m. on election day. If you do not want to mail it, you can take it to an early voting site to be voided and then you can vote in person. To request a ballot, you can do it on-line or by calling: (954) 357-7055. For other information, you can call the supervisors office at: (954) 357-7050. This evening, Thursday, October 16th, there will be an important meeting about our elementary school and middle school. Over the past 8 years, we have been requesting that the Hallandale Adult Center be moved to a different location. The current site has created many issues within our residential area. We now have Gulfstream Middle School that has been very successful, but does not have the same amenities as other middle schools. The last time we met with the board representatives, the Education Advisory Board asked the location be swapped out and that Gulfstream Middle School be moved. This would create a K-8 campus. Most importantly, it would provide a school that has a gym and playing fields to

our middle school scholars. It would also be much safer for our middle school students since the PE facility would be right on campus and would not have to go to HAC to do sports. HAC would then be closer to the commercial corridor and public transportation be away from our residential area. The city commission has already endorsed this concept on multiple occasions. It simply makes sense. It is a much better use of school resources. The Adult Center does not use the gym or the fields since they are an alternative school. We have been advocating for a facility swap. Regretfully, there is not a board policy that provides for the exchange even though the school is just blocks away in the same city. For many years, state policy prevented any students to be relocated without triggering a boundary change process. These changes only occur when there is a capacity issue. There is now a process called Student Success Opportunity Schools SSOS, it allows parents to address changes they want to see in their school system that will serve the needs of their children.

• Obviously, the Governor’s race is front and center, but this should not be the only thing you vote on in this important election A committee of parents have been working on this issue with the school board staff and will be holding the meeting with the School Board at Hallandale Elementary School 900 Southwest 8th Street, starting at 6:30 p.m. All residents are encouraged to come out and share their views about this issue. The Hallandale Beach CRA continues to move forward on many great projects. Over the past two months, we have closed on eight brand new affordable housing units. These single-family homes have been built with the cooperation of many partnerships that have not only provided families a place to call home, but jobs and business to our local vendors in Hallandale Beach. The CRA is also in the process of building 15 more units. The Foster Road Gateway project is also moving forward. The project will include 12 Townhomes, rental apartments and commercial shops. The recession put this long awaited project on hold for a few years, so it is great to

see it finally taking shape. This past Monday, the board approved a partnership with B.A.N.D. This organization has worked county wide doing housing rehabilitations. Under the Neighborhood Stabilization program and our CRA, they will be purchasing blighted homes and rehabbing them. What is unique about this partnership is recaptured NSP funding that was used to rebuild homes that

were sold, is now being reused and paired with CRA funds to create better living conditions in our community. ‘Why I love Parks’ Students Contest Winners Honored

Hallandale Beach area students were honored by Hallandale Beach City Commissioners on Monday for creativity in the visual arts, computer arts and creative writing in a contest about what they love about the City’s diverse parks. Students at Hallandale Elementary School presented art work and essays on the parks. Gulfstream Middle School students were judged on PowerPoint presentations and students at Hallandale High School were judged on creative arts. The Education Advisory Board scoured dozens of entries before selecting the top three in each grade at Hallandale Elementary, and the top three from Gulfstream Middle School and Hallandale High School. Among those presented awards for artwork was Nia Harris, center in blue dress, a second grader at Hallandale Elementary School. The "Parks Plan" G.O. Bond is on the ballot this year. Voters will have the chance to renovate and beautify our local parks when Early Voting begins on Monday, October 20th. Don't forget to vote!

‘Gulfstream Park West’ now open for racing

An agreement reached this summer that allows the Stronach Group, owner of Gulfstream Park, to lease the Churchill Downs Inc.-owned Calder Race Course put an end to the bitter head-to-head conflict between the two tracks that plagued the south Florida circuit for a year. Now named “Gulfstream Park West,” the Miami racetrack opened last Wednesday. Dubbed the “Fall Turf Festival,” the 40-day session will continue through Nov. 30, with racing Wednesdays through Mondays most weeks.

Autumn Casey Wins Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s Instagram Contest HOLLYWOOD - Miami artist Autumn Casey is the winner of the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s #acchfocus Instagram contest, which spanned 52 weeks, starting Sept. 1, 2013 and ending Oct. 8, 2014. During that time, the contest generated 1,347 hashtags (#acchfocus non unique entries). Balance issues and altered gait patterns are not necessarily a normal consequence of aging

Getting Effective Delivery from Your Asthma Inhaler • What Parents of Asthmatics Should Know (BPT) - Did you know that Asthma affects approximately 26 million Americans, including 7.1 million children? May is Asthma and Allergy Awareness month and the perfect time to remind parents of asthmatics about the importance of making sure their child is getting the correct delivery of their asthma medication. Asthma is a very common chronic disorder in children. While many believe that asthma can be outgrown, once you have asthma, you will always have it, so it is important to make sure it is well controlled. To manage asthma, there are two types of medications -

quick-relief medicine and long-term control medicine, both of which are available through metered-dose inhalers. How one sailing boat is empowering those living with multiple sclerosis (BPT) - The term smooth sailing doesn't always apply, especially when faced with rough waters and stormy skies. But despite any challenges from Mother Nature, the crew of Oceans of Hope will not let anything get in their way, even multiple sclerosis (MS) - a condition that attacks the central nervous system and in some cases can be debilitating. The Sailing Sclerosis Foundation's (SSF) project, Oceans of Hope is the first circumnavigation of the world in a sail boat crewed by people living with MS. The project aims to show what is possible when people with a chronic disease are empowered to conquer their individual challenges. "The idea for this project came after I met a patient who had built a boat to sail around the world. After being diagnosed with MS, he thought his dream was shattered. Through Oceans of Hope we want to show people that MS shouldn't stop them from achieving their dreams," says Dr. Mikkel Anthonisien, founder of the SSF. "Since the program's inception, the number of people involved has grown by leaps and bounds, and they have come to realize their MS doesn't mean they have to stop doing activities they love; it's just a question of doing things a bit differently." Another unique aspect of the 33,000 nautical mile voyage is that people living with MS are able to be crew members as well at different ports throughout the journey. Seattle resident, Cara Lauer, who was diagnosed with MS four years ago, joined the crew of Oceans of Hope during a stopover in the northeast. Cara experienced the first signs of MS when she had numbness on the left side of her face after returning from her honeymoon. Although she did not experience other symptoms at that time, Cara still went to her doctor to get it checked out. Initially her doctor wasn't too concerned, but decided to consult a neurologist who suggested that Cara get an MRI to detect damage to her central nervous system. The MRI confirmed an MS diagnosis and Cara became one of the approximately 400,000 people living with this chronic condition in the U.S. Cara decided that she would face her diagnosis head-on and share the news with her friends and family right away so they could be a part of her much needed support system. Ringo Starr, former member of the Beatles & his AllStar Band, set to perform at the Broward Center SPOTLIGHT ON STAGE By Eleanor Hannan Ringo Starr is the man who became the legendary Beatles’ drummer and the narrator for the world’s most popular musical group. His first recording session, as a member of the Beatles took place in 1962. Starr became known as the friendly Beatle with a great sense of humor and quotable sayings. The song “Eight Days a Week” was written after the band’s first movie, “A Hard Day’s Night” in 1964. Drums became the love of his life. His inventive drumming also gave the band a distinctive sound and his down to earth manner made him a great band member. Like the other Beatles, Starr became interested in the Liverpool style of music known as skiffle. In 1962, the Beatles released “Revolver,” which included the song “Yellow Submarine, ” the only number one single in which Starr was the lead singer. He was the lead vocalist on most of the studio albums as “With a Little Help From My Friends” and many, many others.
