Hallandale Beach Area Chamber gets together at the impressive Z Gallerie

RIDING OUT THE STORM • As we race toward October, the hurricane season has been very quiet, locally

The Hallandale Beach Area Chamber of Commerce was on the road once again - on Sept. 11 - when members and directors got together for a Business Card Exchange at Z Gallerie in the beautiful Village at Gulfstream Park. On hand for the evening were Patricia Genetti Hallandale Beach Chamber of Commerce, Tina Vierus Z Gallerie, Mirna Dawon Z Gallerie & the great staff. The chamber has been the heartbeat of the community, and will have a number of events upcoming in September and October. By Larry Blustein Hollywood resident Mark Wilson spent this past weekend trimming trees and keeping his yard free of debris. It's what he does every hurricane season, and despite little activity so far in 2013, he won't stop any time soon. Wilson, 58, grew up in southern Miami-Dade County. He experienced the fury of Hurricane Andrew back in 1992, and that "48-hours of hell" changed the way Wilson will think about this season and every other season forever. The fact that we are sitting here in the third week of September and have had only two "smaller" hurricanes has put some in a mode that we are going to dodge a bullet -

While last week was the "peak" of the Atlantic hurricane season, there were some storms, but none that would impact this region of the country.

again. That is certainly not the way Wilson thinks. "I will never, ever be one of those guys that doesn't think it can't happen to me - because it already has," –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– STORM, Page 3A

National Down Syndrome Awareness Month hits home

Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue Lt. Lori German’s, daughters, Emilee, 11, and Sarah, 10, will take center stage in the “Crossroads of the World,” Times Square in New York City, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, as part of the kickoff to October’s National Down Syndrome Awareness Month and the 2013 NYC Buddy Walk. Sarah, on top, and big sister Emilee, below, who was born with Down Syndrome, were selected from more than 1,500 entrants for the 20-minute video that highlights children and adults living and playing alongside family members. Volunteers needed for American Cancer Society Relay For Life Walkers, cancer survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), community leaders, hard workers and interested volunteers are all needed to make the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Hallandale Beach. Relay For Life is a unique fundraising event that allows participants from all walks of life – including patients, medical support staff, corporations, civic organizations, churches and community volunteers – to join together in the fight against cancer. Relay For Life is a team event where participants walk around a track relay style overnight. Teams of cancer fighting enthusiasts will gather at a local park to show their support and dedication. Volunteers from the Hallandale Beach community are needed to begin planning now for this event which will be held this Spring. "Relay For Life is as much an awareness raiser as it is a fund raiser," said Jessie Brooks, the Relay For Life staff partner. "Individuals who are willing to give their time and energy to this exciting event, as a volunteer or participant, have made a commitment to fight back against this disease and let the Hallandale Beach community know that you can beat cancer.” Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams; seek community support; and coordinate logistics, refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment, and lend their support in any way. If you would like to join the Relay For Life of Hallandale Beach as a volunteer or team participant, call the American Cancer Society at (954) 5640880 x7536 or email

Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––– Wilson admits. "It's something that may have taken just one hurricane to hit, but it really changed the way I view these months." Wilson has lived in Florida all of his life. When he was younger, he never paid attention to storms that hit this area, but he certainly was on guard after Andrew. "I think it was 1995 when I really understood what hurricane season was all about," Wilson recalled. "I think they had 11 In 1995, 11 (Tanya, Allison, Dean, Erin, Gabrielle, Jerry, Opal, and Roxanne) hurricanes that all made landfall. That is why my guard is never down." While last week was the "peak" of the Atlantic hurricane season, there were some storms, but none that would impact this region of the country. Still, while those who have never experienced the sheer fury of a summer storm, never give how fortunate we have been a second thought. In a year that we

have had Humberto, who was the first hurricane of the season, and Ingrid - over the weekend - many weather experts know that the light at the end of the tunnel is not even close. The average this time of year is three hurricanes. We have had two, so the rest of this month, October and a warmer November will put everyone on alert for the next 10 weeks. Hurricane experts point to a number of different reasons why this season has been quieter for most. They insist that areas of high pressure over the central Atlantic have been very strong and very good at driving dry air southward into

the tropics into September. Generally it is easier for tropical storms to form and tropical storms to strengthen into hurricanes when there is an unobstructed supply of moisture available. No matter what city you live in locally, you can almost guarantee that mayors and commissioners still preach being ready and being prepared. In Hallandale Beach, Mayor Joy Cooper continues to talk about never letting your guard down. She fully understands that debris in yards and other things that people take for granted, could end up doing the most damage. "We tell our residents

Page 3A

every day and every week about being prepared and never assume that the season is slow and won't affect us," Mayor Cooper explained. "This city has been so proactive through the years with forums and other informational events that are designed not to scare, but to have everyone ready - just in case. That scene repeats itself in Hollywood, Dania Beach, Aventura, Sunny Isles Beach and every other community that is subject to large storm surges - like many would experience along the coastline if a sever storm hits. It takes only one hurricane, tropical storm or hybrid storm to have a major impact on a populated area and define a disastrous season. Agnes, Andrew, Diane, Hazel, Ivan, Katrina and Sandy were a few such storms that made a lasting mark on their seasons and changed lives forever. Have something to add to this story? Hallandale Beach residents benefit from passing of the 2013-2014 budget By Mayor Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - On Monday September 16th, the City Commission passed the 2013-2014 budget on first reading with a 4-1 vote. Commissioner Lazarow's dissenting vote came as a surprise to the commission since the budget passed 5-0 at our workshops. Over a month ago, the city commission reviewed the City Manager's proposed budget during a two day extensive workshop. The general fund budget was cut by $610,000 dollars plus a requested planning position. The city commission recommended budget was released to the public and the TRIM notices were mailed out with a tentative rate. Her vote was in opposition to the use of reserves. She did not offer any specific cuts to service, programs or staff. Some people called me after receiving their TRIM notice. They were opposed to the increase in the tax rate. I explained that the rate was a tentative rate and is always set higher in case any projections in revenues or expenses are incorrect or the commission wanted to add to the budget. The commissions’ intentions and goal was

to keep the rate the same as last year 5.688 and we did. In the TRIM notice, there is a Roll Back Rate listed. Hallandale Beach’s roll back this year is 7% lower than the 5.688. This rate is the rate that would generate the exact same revenue as last year. The increase of 7% from the rollback rate equates to approximately $30 dollars a year for a house valued at $170,000 and is less then $1 million in revenue to the city. There has been this concept floated that the commission should not utilize any reserves, except for one-time capital improvements, not operating expenses. That would be 100% accurate if we had critically low reserves or we were still not coming out of the recession. It needs to be noted that we still are paying down losses in our pension funds that were a result of the financial crisis. The pension fund is able to smooth losses over multiple years. The funds are finally seeing gains, but we still have a few years of smoothing. Currently our reserves are at the same level they were 10 years ago and well over the recommended standard of

5-10 percent for the general fund. The reserves helped get us through the rainy days so we did not have to cut services, we could maintain our infrastructure and pay our bills. The other problem with not using reserves when it is fiscally sound is there are few alternatives, cut level of services or raise taxes. The use of reserves was at $4.1 million dollars until after long debate at our workshop and my request to cut $610,000 and the position. I also requested to cut the addition of an attorney, but could not get the commission to agree. This $3.5 million use is half of what was used last year even though we have increased the level of services, added a new pool and continue to upgrade our infrastructure. We were told by the City Manager during our workshop that in order to not use the reserves positions would be cut. It would not just be programs. She and staff did not leave one stone unturned, when looking to cut. Over the past years we cut positions that were not filled and eliminated some when people retired. The general fund supports police, fire, parks,

human services and all administrative positions. The City Manager had also floated an increase in tax rate to offset the use of reserves. This was not approved. As I have always said, you cannot have it both ways. Our tax rate remained the same and we reduced our water base fee by $2.00 a month. This means the owner of a homesteaded property valued at $170,000 (city average) will see a slight increase on their tax bill, but it will be offset by a $24 reduction in the water fee. We had some public speakers address the commission. Two main topics were the fire fee which remained at $145 dollars per residential unit and the water, sewer and storm water rates. Ironically the water base rate was lowered this year by $2.00. All other rates remained the same. Residents still do not understand the reasoning behind the combined base/gallon rate rather than a flat gallons rate. The base rate allows the city to spread the costs of water infrastructure evenly to all property owners. Whether the property uses the water or not, you still need the pipes and pumps to get the

water to the properties. In a city like ours, that still has a large seasonal population the gallon rate alone would place an unequal burden on year round residents. The gallon rate would need to increase to cover both fixed and variable costs which would need to compensate for months when demand is low. The Fire Fee remained the same, but a multi unit landlord asked why he had to pay per unit. The Fire Chief explained that the unit rate is calculated on total costs divided among the amount of housing units citywide not properties. The formula used has to meet state statute requirements. The same with the Commercial Rate. The entire commercial square footage citywide is calculated and each property pays based on their footage. The Fire Fee only goes toward Fire Services which is 40% of the Fire/EMS budget. The tax rate was approved anonymously 5-0 for the city and both safe neighborhood districts. The budget for Three Islands District was approved on a 5-0, but the Golden Isles budget was passed on a 4-1 with Commissioner Lazarow

voting no. She stated it was over the sidewalks, but they were not even part of this year’s budget. It was budgeted last year. The district partnered with the city last year to add sidewalks and a bike lane in the area by reducing the road to one lane. This added to the safety of the area by reducing speeding and finally added the safety of sidewalks. For years residents wanted sidewalks but did not want their front yards split in half nor their existing landscaping remove. The new sidewalks along Layne Blvd. will be placed in the the abandoned lane so no one will lose any yard. They will be at grade so cars will be able to pass trash trucks and other city vehicles. The city will be required to maintain them - not the residents. This second reading and final hearing adopting the City Commissions budget will be on September 25th at 6 pm at city hall chambers. Innovation is the key to Mei Kitchens’ success

In keeping with the ever-evolving kitchen and bathroom trends, Mei has expanded its large selection of cabinetry to include many Contemporary European and Modern styles. There's no doubt that many of us have been thinking about different ways to modernize our homes. It's only natural. While times have been tough for many, giving your home a makeover may seem out of reach. That's where Sean Lin and his innovative staff at Mei Kitchens come in. After ten years of business, Lin, his wife, Annie, and their daughter, Angela, continue to raise the bar when it comes to building dream kitchens, bathrooms, bars, closets, and much more. While much of their business centers on shipping Internet orders all over the world, Lin is beginning to focus more on the home front. Mei Kitchens is currently remodeling their Pompano Beach showroom to showcase a new line of Contemporary European styles, and a second showroom opened to the public last week in West Palm Beach. "The idea is to demonstrate that Mei is a lifestyle, and stretches way beyond the kitchen and bathroom," said Debbie Bering, Director of Marketing for this rapidly expanding business. Uproarious comedy ‘Moon Over Buffalo’ now on stage at Broward Stage Door Theatre By Eleanor Hannan Playwright Ken Ludwig has had many hits on Broadway, London and throughout the world. His best known play is “Lend Me a Tenor,” which won two Tony Awards and the Olivier Award nomination for Best Play, produced by Lloyd Webber. This was followed by the musical “Crazy For You” which won awards for Best Musical. His present play is “Moon Over Buffalo.” Just imagine a downat-the-heels theatrical family consisting of George and Charlotte Hay, who are traveling actors, who are performing “Cyrano de Bergerac” and “Private Lives” in a repertory theatre in Buffalo. Charlotte, a wacky fading beauty has grandiose dreams of becoming a Hollywood film star. George is very satisfied just being a stage actor who believes live theatre is far superior to film. Now, picture this not so popular theatrical family led by a drunken womanizer married to this determined actress, add to the family, a deaf grandmother trying to get back into show business and a daughter who has decided to never act again. They arrange to get together, one more time, for a last chance to become stars when it is known that Frank Capra needs replacements for the two stars who left his “Private Lives” show. George, in a drunken stupor, thinks they are performing Cyrano and arrives in full costume. They wind up performing for a TV weatherman, who Charlotte’s hard of hearing mother mistakenly introduces to them as Frank Capra, the result is a disaster. The rest of the play becomes even more and more ridiculously funny. The show will definitely have audiences laughing out loud throughout

the play at the Broward Stage Door Theatre now on stage through October 6, 2013. Tickets are $16 and $38 at the theatre’s box office located at 8036 Sample Road, Coral Springs. WELLS AND CORAL SPRINGS CENTER PRESENT THE EMOTIONAL PLAY “SIDE EFFECTS”: Agnes Alexander, a woman who is bipolar has everything any woman would desire. A college degree, successful career, a mother who loves her, a best friend, Rebecca who cares and will do anything to get Agnes back on her feet, Agnes’s fiancé, Brandon, who thinks the world of her...or does he? During Agnes's and Brandon’s engagement party, Brandon reveals a secret that sends Agnes, her mother and his own mother into a state of disbelief. Brandon’s announcement ignites an emotional eruption within Agnes, which triggers the “Side Effect.” Brandon is heartless and is partly responsible for the condition that causes Agnes’s reaction. When his father, Brandon, Senior, shows up at the engagement party, he may be in for a rude awakening. Although Brandon’s best man, Grady, wants to appear innocent, his silence makes him equally responsible for Agnes’s condition and when a mysterious woman shows up, getting everyone’s attention, things get even more confusing. Will friend Rebecca live to regret some of her advice and decisions? A web of confusion oc-

curs causing one great mystery. Who would be better at untying this web of confusion than Detective Joseph. The stage play “Side Effects,” Hurting People filled with high emotion, laughter and great singing, appears at the Coral Springs Center September 28, 2013, at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance, $35 at the door. The theatre is located at 2855 Coral Springs Drive, Coral Springs. The box office is open Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For reservations, call: (954) 344-5990. “CHICAGO” IS COMING TO BROWARD CENTER: The musical Chicago is based on a play of the same name originally written by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, who was assigned to cover the 1924 trials of murderesses Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner for the Chicago Tribune. Annan, the model for the character of Roxie Hart, was only 23 when she was accused of the murder of her lover Harry Kalstedt. She was found “not guilty.” Velma Kelly, based on the Belva Gaertner character was a cabaret singer and society divorceé, when the body of Walter Law was found slumped over the steering wheel of Gaert-

ner’s abandoned car. Police Officers testified they saw a woman getting into the car shortly before hearing gunshots. They later found an automatic pistol and a bottle of gin on the floor of her car. She was acquitted. The lawyers at the trial were the model for Billy Flynn, a slick criminal attorney, portrayed by awardwinning actor John O’Hurley. Chicago holds the record for the longest running musical in Broadway history. 6472 performances as of June 2012 with many of the catchiest melodies and choreography by Bob Fosse, strongly identified with the show. Murder, Greed, Cor-

ruption, Violence, Exploitation, Adultery and Treachery, set amidst the razzle-dazzle of the 1920's is what the story of “Chicago” is all about. The same sensational headlines can be seen in newspapers even today. Tickets are now on sale from $34.50 to $79.50 at the Broward Center’s box office located at 201 Southwest Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale opening October 9th through October 20th 2013. World Water Monitoring Day has many area residents concerned and interested HOLLYWOOD - On September 18, people from all over the world participated in an important exercise in the protection of our most precious resource – water. They did this by taking part in World Water Monitoring Day with people around the globe getting their hands wet to test the condition of their local water bodies and raise awareness worldwide of the importance of water quality. Here in Hollywood, residents can be mindful of doing their part to protecting this most precious resource everyday by making water conservation a part of their daily routine. So, how can you help conserve? • Check your faucets and pipes for leaks. A small drip from a worn faucet washer can waste 20 gallons of water per day. Larger leaks can waste hundreds of gallons. • Check your toilets for leaks. Put a little food coloring in your

LIMITED TIME SPECIAL: $55 Call for the appointment and save on the regular $150.00 price. Chronic pain is debilitating, and quickly erodes quality of life. Now, a new medical technology allows many patients suffering from back or joint pain to avoid surgery and return to the activities and lifestyles they enjoyed previously. Map PEMF Therapy is a painless noninvasive method of delivering a pioneering new branch of an invisible treatment that provides a revolutionary cure you were waiting for. A rapid acceleration which recovers and restores a painfree lifestyle. The treatment works on all joint problems, tears, sprains, fractures and repetitive injuries such as carpel tunnel, arthritis, and osteoarthritis. What’s truly amazing about MAP PEMF Therapy is that it actually regrows cartilage as well as increases bone density. It has been used by thousands of people, including many professional athletes. MAP PEMF Therapy can help patients avoid hip and knee replacements and provide rapid alternative recovery methods. It is now available at

the Joint and Muscle Treatement Center in Hallandale Beach. HOW IT WORKS If you have ever held two magnets in your hands, tried to force them together, and felt a resistance between them, then you have experienced a magnetic field. PEMF stands for Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Fields, which are widely used these days to improve circulation and cell metabolism. The body can become accustomed to nonmoving (or static) magnetic fields, which are generally unable to deeply penetrate the body. A pulsed electromagnetic field, however, is quite dynamic, is able to penetrate all the way through the body, and creates a cascade of effects within the body. The MAP PEMF Therapy uses moving magnets creating an energy wave

which changes the way your body copes with pain. The electrical magnets affect the nerve cells which are electrical cells and the magnetic fields affect how the nerves fire and quiet them down without using drugs increas-

ing circulation in the area and aid the healing. Inside the MAP there are electrical coils, and when electricity passes through there it creates a magnetic field that moves through the body whispering at 75 trillion cells in your body

JADE INFRARED TREATMENT... Limited Time Introductory Offer - $55.00

Jade Infrared Mats are a perfect way to fight off disease. Up until recently, there was no evidence to support what we already knew, that Infrared mats can not only prevent some major diseases such as Cancer and Diabetes, but that it can also help in healing these diseases. But recently, Dr. Nobuhiro Yoshimizu, former director of Yokohama General Hospital in Yokohama, Japan, wrote a book entitled "The Fourth Treatment for Medical Refugees". In his book, Dr. Yoshimizu, M.D. Ph.D.'s thesis is "Exposure to far infrared rays is the key to preventing metastatic cancers and strengthening the immune system." Now the Nakamachi Garden Center Director, Dr. Yoshimizu has taken his theories and put them to the test in his new clinic and has found that thermotherapy should be the fourth treatment for Cancer. Naming surgery, radiation and chemotherapy as the three accepted forms of treatment in Western Medicine for cancer, Dr. Yoshimizu shows through bonified case studies that thermotherapy (with infrared ) actually helped tumors shrink and disappear in some cases. Infrared mats great for patients with lyme disease, MS, diabetes, stress and arthritis as well.

IT WORKS FOR ASTRONAUTS - PUMP YOUR HEART DOWN HERE In the 1980's, NASA researchers concluded that far infrared helped astronauts to maintain cardiovascular conditioning during long space flights. Back home, chronically ill patients who cannot get meaningful exercise have benefited tremendously from far infrared mats. Heart rate, cardiac output, and metabolic rate all increase as the body cools itself by diverting blood from internal organs out to the extremities and skin.

DO YOU HAVE ACHES AND PAINS? So safe it’s used in hospitals to keep babies warm. So powerful far Infrared heat was used by NASA to keep astronauts healthy in addition far infrared saunas were used to assist in the detoxification process of workers at the post 911 World Trade Center. Far infrared heat is widely used for the treatment of arthritis, rheumatism, and muscle spasms. Regular use of FIR jade mats widens blood vessels and increases blood circulation, allowing more oxygen to reach injured areas. This reduces pain and speeds the healing process. HAVING TROUBLE LOOSING WEIGHT? Losing weight is vital to improving health. Yet, it is difficult to lose weight if your body is loaded with toxins and your metabolism is damaged and your intestines function poorly and if you avoid movement, exercise and flexing. The far infrared heat of the jade mat will enable you to move more, gain momentum to exercise more and stimulate that cardiovascular workout everyone agrees is the key to losing weight and good health. Many toxins that we acquire over years of breathing polluted air, eating packaged food, drinking acidic beverages, alcohol, smoking all end up stored in our fat cells. This is a protective measure that the body uses to protect vital organs. Using the far infrared heat helps you melt this fat, allowing the toxins to be excreted more quickly. The far infrared mat releases the toxins that are in your fat, and can improve intestinal functioning. Some users see great improvement in their food allergies even after just a month or two of daily use. Also, as much as 600 calories per session are used up with increased heart rate, cardiac output, and metabolic rate.

Dr. OZ introduces a breakthrough way to heal pain using Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields. Also known as PEMF therapy, this method of healing has been widely used in Switzerland for over 15 years. It’s a technology that had been developed for the Russian Space program to help prohibit the bone loss that the cosmonauts suffered when they were in space and away from the earths magnetic fields.

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS The Researched Benefits of PEMF Helps With All Forms of Pain. Though clinical research supports the benefits of PEMF therapy, to us it is the journey of our clients that brings powerful meaning to the results. If you are among the 1 in 4 adults who suffer from chronic or acute pain, we understand how the impact and consequences of living in pain can be immeasurable.

Fibroids and polyps: What women should know about a common health problem

(BPT) - Women might be surprised to know that most of them will develop fibroids or polyps as a health issue sometime in their lives. In fact, studies show that 70 percent of white women and 80 percent of AfricanAmerican women will develop fibroids by the time they are 50. Although these growths are among one of the most common health problems a woman can face, few know what they are, what the symptoms can be, and what treatments are available to them. So what is a fibroid or polyp and how do you know if you have them? FIBROIDS AND POLYPS Fibroids and polyps are growths in a woman's uterus that are usually benign but can be malignant in some cases. While they are mostly be benign, some of the most substantial problems they cause for women result in infertility, trouble with getting pregnant and suffering recurring miscarriages. Polyps are small growths on the surface of the uterine wall, an overgrowth of the lining that is easy for the ob-gyn to remove. Fibroids are larger and are usually imbedded in the smooth muscle of

the uterine wall. Fibroids vary in type, size, and where they grow in the uterus. Two types of fibroids can grow inside the uterus on a stalk or outside the womb.- Others can grow just below the lining of the uterus. Some fibroids grow in the middle of the uterine wall and some develop under the outer covering of the uterus. Heredity and race can increase your risk of developing fibroids. Uterine polyps usually occur in women in their 40s and 50s. Factors that can put you at risk for fibroids are obesity, high blood pressure and a history of cervical polyps. Endometrial polyps - or those that grow in the lining of the uterus - occur in 10 percent to 25 percent of women, and are present in 25 percent of women with abnormal uterine bleeding, or heavy periods. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? While some fibroids and polyps can go undetected based on size and where they are located, there are a number of symptoms that women should be aware of.- Many will suddenly suffer from heavier periods than usual (lasting seven days or longer), sensations of abdominal or

pelvic-area bloating, belly or pelvic pain, constipation, or pain during sexual intercourse. While none of these symptoms are life-threatening, they can detract from a woman's quality of life. If you've been diagnosed with fibroids or polyps, you should talk with your health care provider about your treatment options. TREATMENT OPTIONS There's no single best treatment approach. For uterine fibroids and polyps, your doctor might recommend "watchful wait-

ing," where active treatment is unnecessary unless the fibroid or polyp changes or if you're at risk for development of cancer. Certain hormonal medications, including progestins, may shrink polyps and lessen symptoms. But such medications are shortterm solutions at best-symptoms typically recur once you stop taking the medicine. Fibroids usually grow slowly-- or not at all-and tend to shrink after menopause when levels of reproductive hormones drop. Medications for fibroids target hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle, treating symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pressure. They don't eliminate fibroids, but may shrink them. As recently as 20 years ago, hysterectomy was the standard treatment for fibroids and polyps. In addition to the complete loss of fertility that comes with a hysterectomy, patients routinely faced

long, painful recuperation times - six weeks or more. New procedures for laparoscopic hysterectomies may have reduced recovery time for some women, but did nothing to prevent the loss of fertility and hormonal changes associated with a hysterectomy. Today, alternatives exist that are less invasive and can be performed on an out-patient basis. These procedures, such as the MyoSure tissue removal system, can eliminate fibroids and uterine polyps without having to cut

or remove any part of the uterus. The MyoSure System works for fibroids located within the uterus, is a short procedure which allows you to go home the same day. The procedure can help eliminate fibroids and polyps as well as the heavy periods that may be associated with them. To learn more, or to find a doctor who can perform the procedure, visit or Cycle.

Dental Implants vs. Conventional Dentures • Patients say their implants eliminate the day-to-day frustrations and discomfort of ill-fitting dentures Many patients who have selected dental implants describe a quality of life that is much more comfortable and secure than lifestyle endured by those dentures with fixed bridges or removable dentures. Dentures often make a person feel and look older than they are cause embarrassment in social situations when they slip and click, and restrict the everyday pleasure of eating comfortably. When they count the benefits they enjoy as a result of their dental implants, patients say their implants eliminate the day-to-day frustrations and discomfort of ill-fitting dentures. They allow people to enjoy a healthy and varied diet without the restrictions many dentures wearers face. With a sense of renewed selfconfidence, many people rediscover the excitement of an active lifestyle shared with family and friends and the chance to speak to co-workers. For all these reasons, people with dental implants often say they feel better… They look better…they live better. Dentures may contribute to the loss of bone in the area where teeth are missing. The presence natural teeth preserve the jawbone. When a tooth is missing the bone may erode until it may be necessary to graft bone to they are to strengthen it for a placement of dental implant. When a missing tooth is replaced by dental implant, the fusion, or Osseo integration, of the implant and bone provides stability, just as the natural tooth did, helping therefore to preserve bone. If you are missing several teeth in the same area of your mouth, you may still enjoy the confidence and lifestyle benefits that come with dental implants. Your Dentist will place two or more dental implants, depending on the number of teeth that are missing. Your replacement teeth will be attached to the implant to allow excellent function and prevent bone loss. The implants will save as a stable support that

tightly locks your replacement teeth and dentures to prevent slipping and bone loss. With overall success rate of about 95% and almost 50 years of clinical research to back them up, dental implants are frequently the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth. Missing teeth is a common thing these days, nearly 20 % of the population of North America is missing some or all of their teeth, but this can be resolved by getting denture implants. WHY GET DENTURE IMPLANTS? Missing one tooth, some, or even all of your pearly whites can significantly affect your quality of life. Many people who have missing teeth are not confident about their smile, and are likely to smile less, which can affect one’s personality not to mention the trouble eating or even speaking.

Dr. Patricia Bobadilla is a phone call away for all your dental needs right here in Hallandale Beach - (954) 456-1939.

The beauty about dentures supported by dental implants is that you are able to eat apples knowing that your dentures won’t slide and irritate your gums. The palate is not covered by adhesive or anything else, which means your taste will be much improved, and it will feel like you’ve got your own teeth back. If you are missing some of your teeth, you will probably opt for some type of denture. Many dentures rely on an adhesive to stick to your gums, the roof and the bottom of your mouth; all of which affect your Platte. Traditional dentures can help you to chew some softer foods; they tend to slide around causing discomfort, and irritation, which can lead to some more serious issues. So how do you prevent dentures from sliding around? The answer is: Denture Implants. WHY CHOOSE DENTURE IMPLANTS? Denture Implants are

Whether it’s Dental Implants Vs. Conventional Dentures - or any question you may have, the informative staff is always ready to help you.

basically dentures secured in place by dental implants. Dental implants are small titanium attachments that are inserted into the gum, and the denture can be attached to a dental implant. Denture implants can stabilize when in the mouth, so you don’t have to worry about them popping out. Denture implants also help to preserve the jawbone. Since the empty space tends to shrink, due to nothing been there to hold, in which your bite will be affected. A denture implant replaces the missing tooth root, and fuses to the jawbone, which will help your jaw to remain intact. The beauty about dentures supported by dental implants is that you are able to eat apples knowing that your dentures won’t slide and irritate your gums. The palate is not covered by adhesive or anything else, which means your taste will be much improved, and it will feel like you’ve got your own teeth back. Eating nuts, crispy fresh fruit, or even hard candy is not a problem once you have your denture implant installed. DENTAL IMPLANTS ARE A TREAM EFFORT

The team is organized as soon as the decision for placing a dental implant is reached. Following an evaluation that includes a comprehensive examination, x-rays and consultation with the patient and member of the implant team, the oral and Maxillofacial surgically places the post, or implant in the patient’s jaw. When the implants have stabilized in the jaw, the restorative dentist prepares an impression of the upper and lower jaws. This impression is used to male the model from which the denture or crowns are created. ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS? Whether you are a young, middle-aged or older adult, whether you need to replace one tooth, several teeth, or all your teeth, there is a dental implant solution for you. With the exception of growing children, dental implants are the solution of choice for people of all ages, even those with the following health con-

cerns: • Existing Medical Conditions: If you can have routine dental treatment, you can generally have an implant placed. While precautions are advisable for certain conditions, patients with such chronic disease as high blood pressure and diabetes are usually successful for dental implants treatment. • Gum Disease or Problem Teeth: Almost all implants placed in patients who have lost their teeth to periodontal disease or decay has been successful. • Currently Wearing Partials Or Dentures: Implants can replace removable bridges or dentures, or they can be used to stabilize and secure the denture, making it much more comfortable. Smokers: Although smoking lowers the success rates of implants, it doesn’t eliminate the possibility of getting them. • Bone Loss: Bone loss is not uncommon for people who have lost their teeth or had periodontal disease; we are trained and experienced in grafting bone to safely and permanently secure the implants. “Call our office today to find out if you are a candidate for Dental Implants. Remember that your smile is only a phone call away”. (954) 456-1939!

Hallandale Beach continues to recognize and remember those who lost lives on 9-11 Hallandale Beach paid homage to the more than 3,000 who perished in the 9-11 attacks in 2001 last week as part of the annual 911 Day of Remembrance ceremony at Fire Rescue

headquarters. (AT RIGHT) Discussing the events that changed the world 12 years ago are, from left, Deputy Fire Chief Alex Baird, Julia Bahr, and Mayor Joy Cooper. Ms. Bahr was a resident of New York at

the time of the attack. She told the Mayor and Deputy Chief about her memories of witnessing the events from her apartment window. (City of Hallandale Beach Public Relations)

Time is running out to give your ideas for the redesign of Sunrise Park Time is running out to give us your ideas for the redesign of Sunrise Park, 800 NE 5th Street. In August, the City asked residents to write their suggestions on four large idea boards placed along NE 8th Avenue in Sunrise Park. We have had so many great suggestions, but we still have time to collect a few more. The original park was a scant onethird acre when the City considered ways to improve the facility in the Citywide Parks Master Plan. With the addition of the property to the south, the park is now 2.33 acres. Now that we have a much larger area, we asked your help in redesigning the park. Take a minute, stop by the park and write your suggestions on the boards. The City collects the suggestions and erases the board each day to make way for a new round of suggestions. You only have another week to help out. (Photo courtesy City of Hallandale Beach Public Relations)

Men’s Health Symposium comes to the Austin Hepburn Center Men are more than 20 percent more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than women, and men are 30 percent more likely to die from cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). In an attempt to help men fight this trend, Hallandale Beach will host a Men’s Health Symposium, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 at the Austin Hepburn Center, 750 NW 8th Avenue. “Men, as a gender, do not take care of their health until they are at a critical point,” said Marian McCann-Colliee, Human Services Director. “We want them to take care of themselves and live longer lives.” The City will offer men free health screenings and consultations. Seminars on cardio vascular health, prostate cancer, advances in radiation therapy for cancer treatment and a personal trainer will offer tips on health and wellness. The program also includes nutritional health, acupuncture, personal massage, HIV/AIDS testing and more. There will be giveaways and an exciting grand prize for men that attend the event. The Men’s Health Symposium formerly was the City’s annual prostate cancer screening program. This year, the program was expanded to cover

Construction crews continue to reshape the landscape of the new B.F. James Park at NW 1st Avenue and NW 8th Street. The team from Burkhardt Construction has carved out the shape of the new swimming pool and laid out the basketball court location. The crew also is working to complete drainage and utilities for the park. Above, crews continue placing pipes to handle the future demands for the park’s utility service. The park is one of two under construction in the first phase of the Citywide Parks Master Plan. B.F. James Park is planned for a June 2014 opening. The second park under construction, Joseph Scavo Park, is planned to open in March 2014. (Photo Courtesy City of Hallandale Beach Public Relations)

I-95 TRAFFIC REMINDER The Florida Department of Transportation will close Hallandale Beach Boulevard 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, for bridge construction. Drivers will not be able to drive east or west underneath the overpass. The ramps will remain open. This is the first of five consecutive weekends FDOT plans to close the road for construction on the I-95 Express project. The work is weather permitting. For additional information, please visit the FDOT District 4 website, and click on constriction.

overall health issues. Three physicians, two from Memorial Health Systems and one from Mount Sinai Hospital, are donating their time to work with men at the symposium. Lunch will be provided. A large-screen TV will carry a football game during lunch. “We think this is critical. We have a large population of older men and many of these cancers develop later in life when men are less likely to take care of themselves,” said Mrs. McCann-Colliee. According to NCI statistics, 535.9 per 100,000 men will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they are 66 years old; 411.1 per 100,000 women will be diagnosed by the same age. Many of these cancers can be successfully treated with early detection. The statistics show 215.3 out of 100,000 men will die from cancer while 149.7 out of 100,000 women will die from a cancer-related disease; many can be stopped through early detection and treatment. The City will hold its annual free Woman’s Cancer Event 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Hepburn Center. Daring pairings: making a match of food and wine • Do you go out on a culinary limb and serve something impressively daring, or do you play it safe with a tried and true menu? (BPT) - Whether you're a trained chef or simply enjoy cooking at home, there's always a certain amount of trepidation at the thought of having guests for dinner. Do you go out on a culinary limb and serve something impressively daring, or do you play it safe with a tried and true menu? If you decide to take a chance, how daring are you? And, if your menu is an adventure for the taste buds, what wine do you pair with it?

Recently, malbec received praise for being a versatile wine and a great choice for food pairing. In fact, when surveyed, more than half of culinary professionals agreed that malbec pairs with many types of foods. Whether you're serving something wildly daring, such as five-spice crusted short ribs with miso black garlic jus, or something mildly daring, like rigatoni with spicy salami and tomato sauce, you

can't go wrong pairing it with malbec. Alamos Malbec, America's most preferred malbec, is grown in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Argentina. The result is grapes that combine bold layers of flavor and excellent natural acidity for a wine that pairs beautifully with just about any meal. "Our unique growing conditions of intense sunlight and cool evening temperatures produce malbec

Avoid Strokes by Switching to a Mediterranean Diet (NewsUSA) - You can improve your health -- and chances of avoiding a stroke, impairment and possibly death -- by simply switching to a Mediterranean diet. This can lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which is the "bad" cholesterol that's more likely to build up fatty deposits in your arteries. The Mediterranean diet contains: * Olive or canola oil as a healthy replacement for butter or margarine. Use it in cooking, for dipping or even as a spread on bread. * Seven to 10 servings of vegetables and fruits daily. When possible, choose fresh and seasonal produce. If you like to snack, cut them up in pieces, and store them in your refrigerator. * Whole-grain bread and cereal. Begin to eat more whole-grain rice and pasta products. Choose organic dips for bread. * Healthy nuts. Include unsalted almonds, cashews, pistachios and walnuts limited to a handful per day. Choose natural peanut butter, without hydrogenated fat added. * No salt. For seasoning use herbs and spices instead. grapes with incredible flavor making the wine highly versatile for pairing with food," says Alamos Winemaker Felipe Stahlschmidt. Entertain with confidence by leaning on malbec's versatility. Consider pushing the culinary envelope, and pair malbec with daring cuisine, such as this recipe for Manchego and Chorizo-Stuffed Piquillo Peppers. Your guests will be impressed (and your reputation in the kitchen preserved). For more daring pairings, visit alamos. MANCHEGO AND CHORIZO STUFFED PIQUILLO PEPPERS Pair with Alamos Malbec Ingredients: 1/2 pound smoked firm Spanish chorizo, chopped 3/4 cup chopped onion 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup seeded, chopped tomato 1/3 cup Alamos Malbec 1/4 cup chopped yellow bell pepper

tomato, malbec, yellow bell pepper and seasonings and cook for 10 minutes more or until all excess liquid has cooked off. Stir in cheese.
