Eager to be heard, residents turned out last week for the unveiling of the Sunrise Park Idea Boards, four, four-foot-by-eight-foot blackboards, to collect ideas for park development. Sunrise Park, located on the corner of NE Fifth Street and NE 8th Avenue, was a one-third acre park until the City acquired the two acres to the south. Because of the additional lands, City leaders are asking the residents what they would like in the park. At the unveiling are, from left, Victoria Figueroa, Sara Chirla, Mayor Joy Cooper and Jade Lebel. Each day, Hallandale Beach Parks and Recreation Department members copy all the ideas and erase the boards to allow a new batch of ideas to be included. The boards will be up until late September. Many Americans are still confused by ObamaCare By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com When it comes to health insurance, for most of us, it sends panic through our bodies, waiting for the next wave of higher premiums heading in our direction. The uncertainty of what lies ahead with our health insurance has many of us lying awake at nights, thinking of alternatives - when premiums soar to prices many of us just cannot afford. "It really has me thinking every day as a 56-year-old with a pre-existing condition," said Mike Cooper of North Miami Beach. "What's going to happen when the prices get so high, I will not be able to afford coverage." You would be surprised at how many people are running around without any form of insurance. From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––– had to endure the past few years, along with the tough economy, had some feeling that the Gulfstream Park many had envisioned, would never become. But things have indeed started to change. The Village at Gulfstream Park has started to take hold – along with casinos, simulcast gaming and other attractions to lure new and established fans. With a resort hotel, a bowling alley and other things planned for the property, the best news that everyone heard after the winter/spring meet had ended in April was about the summer racing. “It was something that was really a natural for the entire park,” said racing enthusiast Mike Grobe of Hollywood. “I would come here during the off season and think that if you could get some weekend live racing, it had to help with bringing new fans in year round.” As Calder continues to host this current meet, Gulfstream jumped into the summer racing with plenty at stake. The facility that many had said was a total waste, leaving many of the businesses empty and the casinos seats without anyone in them, was finally up and going year round. Many longtime track visitors such as Martha Curry of Miami Beach knew that if they hosted live summer racing, it would indeed expose

many locals to the facility. “This is not the one stop racing and casino destinations like many of the other tracks,” Curry said. “There are shops and restaurants all over the place. They need to have a base of clients as well.” Gulfstream has also started to promote the facility more, having events nearly every day – and larger gatherings on weekends. It was the idea to grab every racing fan and give them an option. One that includes taking entire families to the park. “It really makes a difference when you are trying to lure adults who have the buying power,” observed Nick Williams of Hallandale Beach. “You get younger families and they will not only spend money on live racing, but in the casinos and at many of the shops and restaurants.” While gaming laws have prohibited facilities such as Gulfstream Park from playing on a level field with the Hard Rock, this is indeed a place that could surpass almost every other casino/pari-mutuel of its kind. Legendary Loretta Lynn brings her country music to Hollywood By Eleanor Hannan For the past fifty years, Loretta’s music has been an artistically, commercially, and culturally significant success. More so than any other female performer. Her music has confronted many of the major social issues of her time and her life story of a rags-to-riches tale, familiar to pop, rock and country fans alike. “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” her hit single and album, was a best seller and made into an Oscar-winning film contributing to her journey from the Kentucky hills to Nashville superstardom to her current status as an American icon. Over the next few years, Loretta wrote a string of hits unprecedented for their content of takeno-crap lyrics as: “You Ain’t Women Enough to Take My Man,” “ Don’t Come Home A’ Drinkin’ With Lovin' on Your Mind” and “Fist City,” among others from 1967 to 1968, pointing out as a warning, she was not to be messed with. You never know, that “gut feeling” might just prevent a crime. Q & A WITH BURGLARY DETECTIVE, SERGEANT PABLO VANEGAS Explain the typical circumstances of a home burglary. Sgt. Vanegas: Residential burglaries are primarily a daytime crime that usually occurs during the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and most have some sort of forced entry. The burglar usually smashes or pries open a side or rear door or window. Hollywood has a large working class community which translates into many unoccupied homes during the day. Unfortunately, sometimes people forget to take advantage of one of the best burglary de-

We’ve also recently had some attempted burglaries that were prevented because the alarm scared the burglar away. They look for the home that has areas that are not visible from the street because of high fences or overgrown landscaping. They also look for the homes that appear to have no security system or alarm signs. At night, they love homes with poor lighting. Car burglars also target gas stations. As the driver’s attention is

focused at the pump, the burglar moves in and grabs a purse or phone or anything else that’s readily available. What’s the best way to prevent your home from being burglarized? Sgt. Pablo Vanegas: I always tell people to look at their home closely. Stand in front of the house and ask yourself, “How would I break in?” Look at your landscaping—is it creating an area of cover for a burglar? We’ve gone to numerous therapy sessions which have mostly concentrated on the concepts of communication & conflict resolution, but that’s not really addressing our problems the way I see it. My husband will not go out of his way to do a damn thing for me, unless he is in the mood to do so, although I have always done so for him. I’m tired of working on communication, I want to feel that he loves me by his actions…. Am I wrong here? A… Not at all… Much of the therapeutic focus addressing martial couples relationships have centered on the concept of communication, and conflict resolution… and this is with good reason. There is no doubt that clean, and effective communications can do wonders for a relationship. There is also no doubt that even the best of relationships will have conflicts, and disagreements… and that the way one resolves these conflicts will have significant bearing on the quality and endurance of a relationship… These are two very crucial issues that are worked on diligently in sessions… but it is not everything. There is another important aspect in relationships, that often, is not brought into the forefront… and that is the concept of sacrifice… In every meaningful relationship one human being has with another, there are things we do for the benefit of the other, even when we don’t want to do them… This is called sacrifice, and it is the part of the glue that holds our most cherished relationships together. Sacrifice can come in various forms. It might involve partaking in some activities your spouse loves, but you don’t necessarily care for…, maybe it’s giving a massage, just at the time you want one yourself… maybe it’s putting up your mother-inlaw for a few weeks, even though she drives you nuts…But folks, simply put it all comes down to the same thing; “doing things for the one you love even though you may not feel like doing so”… That’s sacrifice… and all the best communication in the world may not amount to a pile of beans if you are not willing to sacrifice for the one you love. "When you're packing a school lunch, it's important to think about the perishability of the foods you're making," says Rutgers University professor Don Schaffner, an extension specialist in food science and spokesperson of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). "Perishable foods can remain at room temperature for no more than two hours - one in the summer due to the heat. Properly refrigerated foods can last a long time, but most school children won't have access to a refrigerator where they can store their lunchbox." The Institute of Food Technologists, a nonprofit scientific organization focused on the science of food offers some guidance for parents as they pack lunches this school year: * Start each day with a clean box or bag. Insulated, vinyl lunch bags are popular, and do better at keeping foods cool than paper bags or metal lunch boxes. When kids come home, clean out lunch bags using warm soapy water, and allow them to dry completely overnight before packing the next day. This helps deter the growth of bacteria in the bag. * Choose secure pack-

packing anything perishable, like a sandwich with meat or fresh cut fruit with a yogurtbased dip. Place the perishable food right against the cold pack in the bag. Wash the cold pack in warm soapy water after every use before returning it to the freezer. * For hot foods like chili, soup or stew, use an insulated container. Before storing the food, fill the container with boiling water, let it stand for a few minutes, empty it and then add the hot food. Nighttime traffic on Hallandale Beach Boulevard, I-95 will be slowing down Nighttime traffic on Hallandale Beach Boulevard underneath I-95 will be slowing down beginning this week. The I95 Express construction project will be closing two of three lanes in each direction underneath I-95 for the next several weeks, and completely closing the underpass on weekends later this month. FDOT announced plans to begin closing two lanes in each direction overnight earlier this week. The work was scheduled to begin the night of Sept. 2. The contractor will close the first lane at 9 p.m. each night and the second lane at 11 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 6 a.m. each morning. The closures will continue Sundays through Thursdays as crews prepare the area for the Interstate construction upgrade. Also, FDOT plans a full closure of all lanes of traffic on weekends, beginning Friday night, Sept. 20.

The contractor will be driving piles for the new, wider overpass and will close all lanes in both directions. The lanes will reopen at 6 a.m. Monday mornings. Dur-

ing the full closures, the entrance and exit ramps will remain open. All construction is subject to weather and could change. However, the total

• Removing your teeth and replacing them with a denture may be the best way to eliminate the infection and restore the health of your mouth STANCES. WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF AN IMMEDIATE DENTURE? Another disadvantage is that you cannot always see how the denture will look before the teeth are extracted and the immediate denture is inserted. Also, initially, an immediate denture does not always fit as accurately as a conventional denture, which is made after tissue have healed for six to eight weeks following extractions, and without wearing a denture. Additional time is needed for the construction of an immediate denture. A surgical stent (a guide for re-contouring tissues after extractions) is often necessary and more follow-up visits are needed for adjustments and re-fitting. A soft temporary reline material will be utilized for re-fitting your denture when it becomes loose during the healing process. After the soft tissues have healed and shrinkage of the underlying bone has occurred (about six months to extractions), the immediate denture must be finalized by a permanent reline or new denture. At this time, you will be charged for either a reline or a new denture, depending on your choice. Your doctor will discuss with you the pros and cons of a permanent reline versus making a new denture, to help you make a decision. A major advan-

tage to making a new denture is that the immediate denture can be a spare denture if the denture breaks, is misplaced, or has to be repaired or relined in our laboratory. IS AN IMMEDIATE DENTURE FOR EVERYONE? Not everyone is a candidate for an immediate denture. Some people may be advised against this treatment, due to general health conditions, or because of specific oral problems. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE? Four to five visits may be necessary for the fabrication phase of an immediate denture, plus any preliminary surgery. For patients requiring a complete immediate denture, the back teeth are often extracted six to eight weeks prior to the fabrication phase. This allows the extraction sites to heal and better-fitting immediate denture to be fabricated. The fabrication phase consists of impressions, bite records, tooth selection and tryin of the back teeth. On the day of delivery, you will be seen by Dr. Bobadilla for extraction of the appropriate teeth, followed immediately by the insertion of the immediate denture.
