But that is all starting to change in one city. As one of the heaviest traveled roads in all of Broward County, 441 (State Road 7) has long been the main artery for motorists moving north and south. But times changed, major highways were built and many of the businesses began to close down. When Hollywood looked toward the future of the entire city, there

Hallandale football team makes it to the big time

Last Saturday, members of the Hallandale High football program had the opportunity to be treated like a "big leaguer" - when the Chargers joined some 65 other south Florida schools to take part in the first ever Miami Dolphins Media Day at Sun Life Stadium. With LSU senior defensive back John Battle IV leading the way, Hallandale players experienced the media side of the game - posing for photos, talking to TV reporters and fielding questions about the 2013 season. The event also gave many of the players a chance to interact as the stadium was busy from 8 a.m. until after 5 in the evening. Five players and a coach were asked questions by the media, giving Hallandale maximum exposure, and experience what the Miami Dolphins go through each and every day. Former Dolphins Twan Russell and Troy Drayton put the entire event together.

When the doors fly open on Monday, Aug. 19, it will usher in another year where budgets are strained and youngsters are pointed toward an economy that is simply average at best. But keep in mind that no matter how you slice it, the first 18 years of any life are easily the most important, and leave the most impact. As our youngsters head back to school - or for the first time - in some cases - there is a feeling of apprehension. New friends will be made along the way, and the unknown of what new teachers you get and how they will influence you - are both exciting and filled with terror. For Hollywood fourth grader Michael Timmons, it's all about the new friends he will meet as he switches from public to private. His family felt that the change may be something that will benefit him. Strickland’s loss hits home to an entire community By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - This past weekend a young man by the name of Vincent B. Strickland was laid to rest at the Hallandale Beach Cemetery. I do not typically write about the passing of individual residents in our city however the death of this 22 year old young man is a sad example of what is taking place in cites around our country on a daily basis. Vincent was a promising artist, drummer and recording student with aspirations to go to college to study music. As a matter of fact he was ready to take advantage of a full four year scholarship to Full Sail College in Northern Florida when his life was cut ever so short. You see Vincent was shot while entering his apartment with a friend on NW 1st Avenue. His

friend and he were rushed to the hospital both with gunshot wounds. He did not make it home but his friend even with three guns shot wounds to his arm survived. The shooter was caught, arrested and is awaiting trial for the murder. No Mayor or Commissioners wants to hear the news that someone has been shot in their community, it is a feeling you cannot explain. This incident really hit home in more ways than one. A son, brother, grandson, nephew friend and mentor all died in an instant. His dreams were shattered. This shooting thank God is out of the norm for Hallandale Beach but around the Country on average 22 African American young men are shot daily. Quite often in black on black incidents.

• Vincent was a promising artist, drummer and recording student with aspiration to go to college to study music For me it hit home, not because it was in our city, but because after being in the city for over twenty two years I watched many of our children grow up. I watched Vincent play drums, spend time at the Palms Center for Performing Arts recording music and mentoring other young students. It was not an easy life for Vincent but because of programs we have supported like the Palms Center Arts to Work Programs there was a place for Vincent. He had a place to go after school. It was safe. It gave him an outlet to spend time with his friends learning and having fun. Most importantly it gave him footing to move to the next level, college. Ironically two weeks before this horrific tragedy another student reached out to me that went to the Palms Center of The Performing Arts. He wrote to me about his grades, 3.0 average at Full Sail as Junior. He shared that he would soon be graduating with his BA in Music Engineering and wanted to come back and get involved with our new Teen Recording Studio at OB Johnson Park. Another young man who was Vincent’s best friend and went through the program is still working to get into the Naval Academy. I keep telling him to study and he will make it. Do not let this tragedy set him back but let it move him forward. I have still not fully wrapped my head around this loss. Many of the young men that went to school with Vincent are still struggling to find some solace. Dr. Deborah Brown did a musical

tribute in memory of Vincent on Thursday. Many of her students from her summer program performed including Vincent’s younger brother. It was a beautiful bitter sweet evening that Vincent would have been proud of. The one lesson that I have taken away that gives me solace is that these programs are vital and I am happy the majority of our commission has seen fit to support them. It convinced me even more that we need to continue to work with all our stakeholders; residents, police, teachers, families, schools and corporate partners to provide after school activities, job training and safe places for our children and young adults to recreate. We also need to work to rid our city of gun violence. The criminal in case was from Hollywood, but there are no visible lines be-

tween our communities. Last week was “National Night Out” the message I delivered that night was crime prevention starts with each and every one of us. We need to work with our police departments and report crime. In our city you can call our tip line 954457-1404 if you “see something say something”. If you see someone that looks suspicious it is better to call and be safe. It is beginning to work. Our department has been called out and they have caught the thieves red handed in some areas. Our department is also working with the surrounding municipalities on a burglary taskforce. Let us get this message out, as Hallandale Beach residents we are not going to ignore the signs we plan on calling our police department reporting and fighting crime. If we all work together these tragedies do not

have to continue. August 28th marks the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” Speech. Vincent’s dream came to an end but we can break this tragic cycle so more children can lead a full life. I have asked staff to work with community leaders of the Palms to host a special event to commemorate the day. Plans are being formulated now and I will keep our readers posted. Too many people going to bed hungry

With nearly 750 families being fed last month alone, this nonprofit organization - located in Hollywood - has come to the point where they need more help and assistance from this caring community.

HOLLYWOOD - Last year, Vandor Geriatric fed 7,949 families. In these trying economic times, where the dollar is being stretched in every direction, it is refreshing to know that people care enough to step up and feed those who are in need of a meal and other services. With nearly 750 families being fed last month alone, this nonprofit organization located in Hollywood has come to the point where they need more help and assistance from this caring community. This locally owned food pantry needs donations of vans, and storage and freezer space to continue making a difference for others. Although seniors and frail adults are the focus of the organization, the need for food assistance and clothing has increased rapidly over the years to include everyone who is in need. More and more men and women do not have those basic necessities that we take for granted. "We serve people on a daily basis," said Vandor Geriatrics Owner and Administrator Dorothy Roberts. "We are available 24/7 for any hungry emergency call, and on Saturdays between 10:00 am and 12:00 noon, dedicated to people near and far." In addition to the many services provided, Vandor Geriatric also does home deliveries to the aged and shut-ins as far as Miami-Dade. "The majority of young adults who come to us always express their desire to get a job," Roberts explained. "The seniors have long been the

grants or donations, but have not been met with any success at all." In addition, the facility is in need of repairs - primarily the roof, which is essential to keep this operation rolling along! In many ways, America is the land of plenty, but for 1 in 6 people in the United States, hunger is a reality. Many people believe that the problems associated with hunger are confined to small pockets of society, certain areas of the country, or certain neighborhoods. But the reality is much different.

Right now, millions of Americans are struggling with hunger. These are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals - or even days. It’s time to educate ourselves about the causes of hunger in America. "No one should go hungry in America," Roberts said. "In the U.S., hunger and race are related. Here are some statistics to back that up: THE FACTS ARE RIGHT THERE

• In 1991 46% of African-American children were chronically hungry, and 40% of Latino children were chronically hungry compared to 16% of white children. Just facts! • Another big issue that is associated with hunger is the amount of food waste produced in America. Half of the amount of food America produces is thrown away. Recent statistics show that every day, Americans fill an entire 90,000 seat football stadium, which is between 160 to 295 billion pounds. This is equivalent to each American throw-

ing 400 pounds of food away each year. These statistics are appalling, considering that 1 in 6 children do not know where their next meal will come. What is the meaning behind all this food waste? Why aren't we informed of this on a regular basis to remind all of us to be conscious of our food decisions? We have all grown too comfortable with luxury and need to be awakened to the reality of hunger. A recent study found that if the amount of food waste was even partially corrected could save American consumers and manufacturers billions of dollars a year. “I cannot say enough about my husband, Scott Roberts and the many, many volunteers for what they do to make this all possible,” Roberts explained. 8 PALATS OF FOOD HEADED SOUTH On Saturday, Aug. 31, there will be eight palats of food delivered by Feeding South Florida for distribution. "There is a sense that when the first day of school comes around, it's really something to look forward to," Anthony Sample of Hallandale Beach explained. "Here I am shopping for school supplies for my two kids and it's a little over a week away." Sample is actually one of the early birds. Parents these days - for time or finances - simply put things off to the last weekend,, and that's where it all gets very interesting. "I went last year on the Saturday before school to get supplies and clothes," Sample recalled. "I said to myself that it would never happen again." Believe it or not, a majority of parents and students have put off their back to school shopping until this coming weekend, which is a risk of not finding the right clothing - or enough supplies to start the year out. "Waiting until the final minute should be my middle name," joked Alyson Rodriguez, an Aventura mother. "It happens to me every year that I wait until the final day. I have three kids in school now, so you would think I would get done sooner." Standing outside Whole Foods Market, she talked about her strategy that would begin at the local Target (for school supplies) and then on to the Mall for the clothing. Rodriguez is optimistic that if everyone gets out of the house early enough on Saturday, things will fall into place and many outfits and shoes can be purchased by closing. "There was no charm about this area at all." With the closing of the Hollywood Fashion Center, things started to decline. The Millennium Mall was also a huge flop that was more hype than actual substance. Having that centerpiece property sit boarded up for all these years really took a toll on the economy in the area. There was never a reason to stop anywhere along this road. As politicians met with many developers throughout the years, there was never enough interest that would give anyone hope that the 441 corridor would once again be a destination. As businesses closed and were leveled to give prospective developers an idea of what new business would be like, the name Wal-Mart began to surface. For years, it was perceived that if you build a superstore - it would certainly add to the landscape - immediately. "That property has been an eyesore and real negative on this city," Hollywood resident Shari Gruber said. "I do believe that it now paves the way for many new businesses to also open." A Wal-Mart does add instant credibility to any community, and while it is a plus, there needs to be other high profile businesses who will also take the chance. "The one thing they do have a lot of in this area are fast-food restaurants," McArthur Junior Danielle Munoz said. "Maybe they should add more family restaurants here as well. That always drives crowd." Hallandale Beach residents may be familiar with the name Francois Michel Jacques. Although known throughout the world for his work with the International Dance Council/UNESCO and the World Dance Sports organization Francois, is a longtime resident of Hallandale Beach. His first Ballroom Dance Club, Luigi’s opened in 1992 and with the success of that club, Francois expanded his vision to open the first Multicultural Dance Club in 1994 inside Kay’s Club on Hallandale Beach Blvd. and both endeavors garnered the dance guru rave reviews. This attention brought thousands of people from around the world to Hallandale Beach in search of dance solutions that blended musicology and choreology to create a greater appreciation of self in relation to other people and cultures. In 2007, while pursuing a B. A. in Filmmaking at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Francois joined The International Association for Dance Medicine and Science. This union with IADMS inspired Francois to create another ground-breaking business venture resulting from his extensive travels and study of Dance Medicine and Science in Greece, Germany, Japan, Cyprus, Europe and Central and South America. Twenty five Tips for a good nights sleep By Dr. Ron A good night’s sleep is a vital function for people all over the world. Lack of sleep can disrupt mood, behavior, and cognitive functioning. It can even induce psychosis. Many people, particularly in high-stress modern cultures, often have difficulty sleeping. Below I have listed some tips for those who suffer from insomnia. Some suggestions come by the way of documented studies, others are my own…In either case, I hope they will help. 1. Do not work strenuously, or engage in deeply thought-provoking conversations or activity, right before bed time. 2. Try hypnosis tapes, or auto-suggestion. 3. Get a deep tissue massage before bedtime. 4. Have sex before sleep. 5. Don’t eat a large meal right before bed time, but also don’t go to sleep hungry. A banana near bed time works for many. Avoid caffeine, chocolates, nicotine & spicy foods. (Although I must say, I’ve known people who sleep quite well after drinking a cup or two of coffee) 6. Try to sleep and wake at the same time each day. 7. If your bedroom is susceptible to noise that may wake you, sound-proof your room, or get a white noise machine… Some people do well with realistic music; some don’t. 8. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and teas work well for some, but longterm, every day use may start working against you 9. If thus far nothing seems to work…, try having more sex. 10. Make sure your bedroom is not too warm or humid. 11. A good shot of booze, or a glass of wine may help you relax and fall asleep, but may affect the quality of your sleep, and contribute to mid-insomnia. 12. Make a pact with yourself, as best you can, to let go of all anxiety-inducing, and obsessive thoughts a half hour before you attempt to sleep. (easier said than done) 13. Be good to yourself and other people. Sleeping is difficult besieged by a guilty conscience. 14. Have a good quality mattress and pillows. 15. If you need to get up to go to the bathroom, try to do this while retaining a sleepy state…, just don’t miss the toilet! 16. Don’t watch the clock. 17. If all else failed…, try having more sex! 18. As mentioned, working right before sleep can hinder the ability to sleep, but some people find it relaxing and assuring to write a list of things to do the next day. Feeling organized can help. 19. Don’t fight it if you can’t fall asleep. Try not to get anxious or frustrated. Do a mild relaxing activity like a cross-word puzzle, or watch some benign television show… Better yet, try reading a psychology journal., that’ll be sure to put you out! 20. Explore spiritual avenues… You can ask God for help… 21. Think good thoughts. 22. Try a hot bath. 23. Do physical exercise a few hours before bed-time, but not right before. 24. If your spouse snores, check your pharmacy for some over the counter products you can buy. 25. Having your wisdom teeth removed early, will save you problems later in life Have you recently been told by your dentist that you need to have your wisdom teeth removed? I would guess that the majority of people reading this have received the same unexpected news at a dental visit at some point in their lives. These same individuals have heard all of the horror stories associated with wisdom teeth extractions and would prefer to avoid the whole ordeal. WHY HAVE THEM REMOVED What a lot of people have difficulty understanding is why? Why, when the teeth do not bother them, do they need to have them removed? Can't they just leave them alone until they bother me? I am going to explain to you the many reasons why it is important to follow the dentist's recommendation to have them removed sooner rather than later. A big reason for wisdom teeth extractions is the lack of space. The wisdom teeth are the teeth that come in behind the 12-year molars in the very back of the mouth (Wisdom teeth usually show up between the ages of 16 and 25.). If you are able to fit the pad of one of your fingers on your gums behind this tooth and it fits there without touching the arch that goes up to the top teeth, then there is a slight possibility that the lower wisdom teeth would be able to fully erupt. Most people do not have this amount of space and need to have them removed for this reason. Another reason for wisdom teeth extractions is poor hygiene. Now, I know you are saying that you are a good brusher and flosser - that you have good hygiene and I'm sure you do. The problem here is that this part of the mouth is very difficult to correctly brush. You are very close to the throat, which can trigger the "gag reflex. If brushing a certain area is triggering this response, I am sure that it won't be getting done regularly. Also, maneuvering a brush to thoroughly clean all areas of the wisdom teeth is difficult because it just doesn't fit. The cheek muscles will press against the teeth and it can be very difficult to fit the brush between the two.

“GREAT FRIENDS - LIKE A SMILE - CAN LAST FOREVER”

• A big reason for wisdom teeth extractions is the lack of space in your mouth Even if a wisdom tooth does have enough room to erupt, sometimes a flap of gum tissue (called an operculum) may cover the tops of these teeth and will hold food debris and bacteria. This can cause decay and bad breath rather quickly. Trying to extract a tooth that is damaged from decay can sometimes be very difficult and may require more trauma to the jawbone when trying to remove the tooth fragments. Another reason for wisdom teeth extractions is impacted teeth. Many people have wisdom teeth that are trying to erupt at the wrong angle. If you looked at a radiograph (x-ray), these teeth may look like they are lying on their side. If the top of the tooth, or crown, is angled toward the last tooth that is present in the mouth, many problems can occur. The patient may have waves of pain in their jaw that can be spread over weeks or months at times. This pain is the tooth trying to push through and erupt, but is unable to go any-

where because it is blocked by another tooth. This pushing can cause the root of that last tooth that is present in your mouth, the 12-year molar, to be damaged because of something called "root resorption". This damage cannot be reversed once it occurs and it can cause the 12-year molar to become unstable. Another reason for wisdom teeth extractions is the completion of recent orthodontia (braces). If the wisdom teeth appear to be coming in at the wrong angle and will be pushing against that last tooth in the mouth, it can cause all of the teeth to shift. After someone has gone through years of being in braces, the last thing that they want to happen is to have all that progress erased. Many orthodontists will recommend the wisdom teeth be removed soon after the braces come off if they are present on the radiograph. Removing the wisdom teeth will prevent any shifting of the teeth and any retainers that the dentist makes to hold

the new position so that the teeth will not be affected. HEALING TIME IS ANOTHER MAJOR FACTOR A reason for wisdom teeth extractions at a younger age is the ease of healing. A lot of people that have been told they need to have their wisdom teeth removed, but did not have them removed until later in life. They may have decided that they will deal with it when the teeth bother them, they may have been too busy, they may have been too afraid, or they may not have been able to financially. If you are young and are able to afford the procedure, don't wait to do it. People don't realize that there is more healing time involved the older you are. Your bones in general, are harder the older you are and you do not regenerate bone as quickly as when you are younger. A teenager may have the teeth removed and bounce back very quickly, where an older person may be more uncomfortable for weeks. If you are older

When someone waits until they are older to have their wisdom teeth removed, they give their teeth time to completely form the roots of the wisdom teeth. Sometimes the root is so long that it is very close to one of the main nerves in the jaw. and employed, you will also have to take time off of work to do this procedure as well. This can be frowned upon by many employers. Your dentist and the oral surgeon will let you know prior to the surgery if this is a concern with the extraction. If the teeth were removed at an early age when the dentist first recommended it, the root would not have been completely formed and

possibly have damaged to this nerve and it would not be a concern. Obviously, wisdom teeth extractions are not something that anyone wants to do. If you have been told by your dentist that you need to have your wisdom teeth removed, take his/her advice and schedule the procedure the first chance you get. They have your best interests in mind and will not advise you to do something that isn't necessary. They have seen enough patients to know who will have problems down the road and who won't. If you follow their advice and have them all removed at an early age, the recovery is quicker, less involved, and less of an interruption than you would have at an older age.
