National Night Out attracts hundreds to Gufstream Park Hundreds of Hallandale Beach residents and neighbors turned out Tuesday night for the annual Hallandale Beach Police Department National Night Out at Gulfstream Park. Visitors learned valuable safety and health lessons and saw the City’s police and fire departments in action during real life demonstrations. The National Night Out has been bringing communites together for over two decades. It is where everyone learns to keep a close watch on their city - and helping to identify crimes before they happen. Many of the other cities also held the same events - all geared to making it a safer place for their residents.

DRUG ABUSE • While Major League Baseball deals with PED issues, local high schoolers are sadly doing the same without the resources By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com While much of the focus the past few weeks has centered around Alex Rodriguez and other Major League baseball players who have tested positive for PEDs (Performance Enhancing Drugs), there is a group that has not been talked about. Far from the million dollar salaries and the spotlight of professional sports are many amateur athletes who have been caught up - at age 15, 16 and 17 - trying to gain an edge. In a world that is dictated by how many home runs you can hit - or touchdowns you can score - the very fact that steroid usage, which was at an all-time high back in the 1970s and 80s, are very much present here in 2013. The very fact that there is a governing body that puts restrictions on using banned substances by professional athletes, it appears that very few people are paying any attention to high school age athletes.
In the recent report by the now defunct Miami-based Biogenisis, there were a number of professional athletes who were singled out for using products that were considered to be enhancing their performance illegally. "You know that people like Alex Rodriguez and other high paid professional athletes know what they are doing by using these bodychanging drugs," said parent Michael Rosen of Hollywood, who has a son playing football for the first time this year. "But these young kids who are steered to these places by coaches and others need to be reached in some way." Ask any high school coach in south Florida and the thought of their players using PEDs - of any kind - is sickening, to say the least. BLOWING THE WHISTLE This entire scandal began with one disgruntled employee. Porter Fischer, who had been described in some clinic documents as a marketing director of Biogeneis, before having an apparent falling-out with clinic founder Anthony Bosch last year, told the Miami New Times in a story last June that Major League Baseball paid him $5,000 for clinic records he turned over to the league in its investigation of the clinic's South Florida reach. That got the ball rolling. The very fact that if there hadn't been this big blow up between Bosch and Fischer, the sad part is that nobody would have known a thing, and that is something that sticks with many local high school coaches. "I have been around all kinds of athletes in every sport at the high school level," said former South Broward head football and wrestling coach Allen Held. "To me, when you make these drugs available to young kids, the damage you are doing is unknown." SOMEONE IS ALWAYS WATCHING As the first day of football practice began across Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, many coaches and players were faced with the reality that now everyone is watching. The days of trying to sneak around and gain that unfair advantage are over. "I think it's really sad when you have to cut corners and try to do things illegally," said John Battle IV, a senior defensive back at Hallandale High. "There are so many of us who work hard to gain that advantage by running, lifting weights, eating the right way." For the record, the 6-2, 190-pound Battle recently committed to attend LSU.

The Hallandale Beach Police Department under the leadership of Chief Dawayne Flournoy did an amazing job putting together an informative and interactive evening. It would not have been possible without the many volunteers, city departments and community partners. All of them deserve a special thanks especially Crime Watch and CERT our Community Emergency Response Team. These citizen volunteers work year round to make our city a safer place. CRIME PREVENTION Crime prevention starts with each individual in our city. I always say if you “see something, say something”. We all need to get back to watching out for one another. Mount Sinai to Host Skin Health Awareness Day Florida has the second highest incidence of melanoma in the United States, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. In addition, melanoma is responsible for approximately 75 percent of all skin cancers. However, because early detection of skin cancer can mean the difference between life and death, Mount Sinai Medical Center is hosting a Skin Health Awareness Day to provide free screenings to the community. The event will take place on Thursday, August 15, from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center. Mount Sinai physicians will administer a complete, non-invasive skin check – a visual inspection of moles, freckles, marks and uneven pigmentation. Participants will also receive a complimentary UV sun detector wristband. Downtown Hollywood’s Mural Program draws unusual suspects
By Shantescia Hill and D. Carrington HOLLYWOOD - It’s an exciting time in Downtown Hollywood. Art is happening everywhere, giving the area’s “Old Florida” charm renewed energy and pedestrian activity. Among many of Hollywood’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) initiatives, the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project has thrived since its inception, one year ago in August 2012. We asked Bryan Cahen, CRA Deputy Director, who is also a visual artist, how it all began. Excited about Downtown Hollywood’s revitalization, his unique perspective gives the inside track on how the mural program came to be, and how it fits into the CRA’s mission to promote economic development through public art. Why murals? Downtown Hollywood’s Mural Project began as a public art program to complement Mayor Bober’s live music initiative that promotes Downtown Hollywood as an ‘art scene.’ The project alone was designed not only to give the locals and visitors an artsy feel to the area, but also to open up the area for new investment.
How did the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project launch? What was the process behind the scenes? Through the efforts of the CRA, the first step involved the City Commission amending the City of Hollywood’s Zoning and Land Development Code and then passing a resolution allowing the CRA Board to create a process and Mural Review Committee. The Mural Review Committee, under the helm of Jorge Camejo, Executive Director of the CRA, consists of seven well-rounded members that are tasked with reviewing applications that are submitted by property owners. Working in a city that has seen many local artists rise to the national stage since the arrival of Art Basel Miami Beach, the CRA tapped South Florida’s best, including David “Lebo” LeBatard, Ruben Ubiera, Jessy Nite, Luis Pinto, Eddie Mendieta, Evoca1, 2alas, Michelle Weinberg, Rob Robi and Tatiana Suarez. Suarez, the mural program’s August artist who most recently custom-designed running shoes for Reebok, stated it best: “Street art and art accessible in public spaces have the power to bring
unique beauty and culture to a community. I believe it offers a sense of awakening to people that might not be familiar with the art-making process, and creates an opening to gain insight into the artist, as well as the idea and message behind their work.” In comparing Jessy Nite’s “Diamonds” - a black and white stripe design interspersed with colorful gemstones to 2alas’ mural,
which similarly has bursts of color, only with black and white lines forming the face of the iconic Mona Lisa, the impact can truly be seen by how each respective wall taps the aesthetic affinity of different age groups, while also bringing these groups together in a common conversation. The success of a project of this scope can be measured against the number of
groups on which it has made an impact. From the artists – along with the media attention and public visibility they receive - to the various businesses that now have a mural such as Muzart or Gallery 2014, the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project is touching individuals and businesses alike. But foot health can be a source of anxiety for both new and expectant mothers, who may wonder about the best ways to care for their baby's feet, and how to cope with changes in their own feet. Whatever shoe you choose, it should bend only at the ball of the foot, and you should never be able to twist the sole or bend it anywhere else. While it's common for women's feet to enlarge during pregnancy - and remain that size even after delivery generally that size increase occurs only with a first pregnancy. So you shouldn't worry that your feet will continue to grow with subsequent pregnancies. Instead, many new moms will worry about their new baby's feet. "The good news is, as long as the baby's feet are healthy at birth most newborns won't require special care for their feet," Garoufalis says. "Caring for your baby's feet is much like caring for the rest of her body." Don't worry if your baby's feet look discolored or wrinkled or even have flaky, peeling skin when she is born. After nine months in protective fluid within the womb, they're bound to look a bit different from yours. Your pediatrician will look for any obvious
abnormalities of your baby's feet and legs, and will let you know what to do if he or she finds some concern. Use baby nail clippers to keep your child's toenails trimmed, cutting straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. Be sure to thoroughly dry baby's feet after a bath, and choose soft, anti-microbial socks that don't wrinkle or bunch to keep her feet warm and protected. When she starts to walk, bare feet are best inside the house as
she's learning the finer points of getting around. Outside, put her in a lightweight, flexible shoe made of natural materials. If foot problems run in your family, consider having your child examined by a podiatrist when she begins to walk. He or she can examine your child's feet to ensure they're growing normally. Breakfast is essential no matter your age • Thirty-one million adults skip breakfast, according to a recent National Eating Trends survey (STATEPOINT) Everyone knows it's important to make sure children have breakfast before school, but college students and busy parents also need a dose of morning nutrition. Breakfast, which refers to “breaking the fast,” is the first meal of the day, usually consumed when the body has gone about eight to 10 hours without food. Eating breakfast is often associated with a higher nutrient
intake and being a smart way to start the day. When it comes to college students and parents, far too many admit to being a breakfast skipper. Thirty-one million adults skip breakfast, according to a recent National Eating Trends survey. And millennials, aged 1834, are the largest population of breakfast skippers. Today, with schedules busier than ever, it’s easy to simply
focus on getting the day started. “Whether you’re in college or chasing after schoolage kids, it’s easy to forgo breakfast to stay on-schedule,” says Betsy Frost, Manager at General Mills. “The tradeoff hits mid-morning with what people are calling the “hangries” -- the feeling of being ‘hungry’ and ‘angry’ or irritable,” she adds. Many universities have excellent fitness centers available for students, but you don't have to become a gym rat to stay fit. Instead of taking the bus or driving to class, walk or ride your bike. CRA launches project to redevelop the site at Foster Road and North Dixie Highway Community members, developers, investors and interested residents braved threatening skies Monday afternoon as the Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency launched a project to redevelop the site at Foster Road and North Dixie Highway. The 2.5acre tract is zoned for mixed use; commercial and residential. A prime tract in the HBCRA zone, the land is ripe for a multi-story venture with commercial businesses at
street level and residential housing units to the rear of the site. The kick-off event was to showcase the land before the City issues a formal request for proposals on Friday. “The (HBCRA) is looking for a public-private partnership that will be beneficial to the developer and for the community,” said Daniel Rosemond, Deputy City Manager and HBCRA department director. Because the development is a partnership, the builder must adhere
to the Hallandale Beach Community Benefit Plan requirements to utilize City residents and Citybased businesses whenever possible. The land is a prime tract that the CRA hopes will spur additional development and redevelopment along the North Dixie Highway corridor. HBCRA believes the development will demonstrate the potential of the area and be a catalyst for additional growth. HBCRA also used the kick-off to discuss

launching a new initiative to resurrect Fashion Row and return the area to a quaint, eclectic shopping district. Fashion Row runs east of the FEC Railroad line north of Hallandale Beach Boulevard, including NE 1st Avenue to NE 3rd St., east to NE 2nd Avenue. HBCRA will hold a community

Greek yogurt finds its way into some of the best kitchens

Preheat oven to 375 degrees and spray an 11-by7-inch baking dish with non-stick spray. Combine ground flax seed, flour, salt, cayenne, black pepper, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika and garlic granules in a small bowl. Dredge chicken pieces in dry mixture and place in non-stick pan. Surround chicken breasts with onion, red bell pepper, yellow bell pepper, mushrooms and tomato. Pour chicken broth over chicken and vegetables, then evenly sprinkle veg-

etables and chicken with remaining smoked paprika. Cover baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 30 to 35 minutes or until done. Chicken's internal temperature should be at least 165 degrees when done. Combine Greek yogurt and lemon juice in a saucepan. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and 1/2 cup liquid mixture from baking dish. Stir into yogurt and lemon juice and cook, stirring constantly, until slightly thickened, about five minutes. Pour yogurt sauce over chicken and vegetables. DESSERTS Cakes, bread puddings, pies - even cookies practically any holiday dessert can work with Greek yogurt as an ingredient. Vegetarians and vegans have been replacing eggs with regular yogurt for years, and Greek yogurt is an even healthier substitution. Generally, if your recipe calls for a cup of creme fraiche, sour cream, mayonnaise or cream cheese, you can substitute a cup of Greek yogurt. It's also a greattasting, creamy and healthier alternative for homemade frozen yogurt.
