Marijuana issue becomes a very heated topic By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com One of the hottest issues right now throughout the country is the legalization of cannabis - for medicinal purposes. Marijuana From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––– group that spearheaded the effort to get the proposal on the ballot, gathered enough signatures statewide in late January to get the initiative onto the November ballot, when 60 percent of voters must approve for it to pass. Backers of a ballot initiative that would legalize a wider use of medical marijuana in Florida are working to address some voters’ concerns before the November election about how the drug would be regulated. A newly formed group called Florida For Care is planning to draft proposed rules for how medical marijuana will be managed if voters approve a constitutional amendment making it legal in the state. Florida Governor Rick Scott signed a law last month that legalized but strictly limits the distribution of a noneuphoric strain of marijuana believed to reduce epileptic seizures. November's referendum is a broader proposal that would allow physicians to recommend the regular form of marijuana to people with debilitating ailments. Growing up in south Florida, Ata Gonzalez headed to California over a decade ago, knowing that the state of Florida and those

who would one day legalize cannabis would never make the right decision. He understood how many channels were needed to go through. His introduction to cannabis - in every form - opened his eyes to how vital it is in our society. That is why he has poured his entire life into knowing everything about cannabis. After years of watching, learning and traveling, Gonzalez has been an expert in every phase of cannabis. Today, the CEO of GFarmaLabs, is a cultivator and distributor of marijuana-based products, and 2 time winner of the High Times Cannabis Cup for edibles. Recently, he was one of many guest speakers at the Florida Marijuana Conference, which was held at the Emerald Hills Country Club. It was an event that attracted over 200 people who wanted to ask questions and see for themselves what this was all about. The conferences are designed to answer questions about growing, prescribing, and distributing Medical Marijuana. “We had legal experts, medical experts, dispensary operators, growers and people who were there to impart their knowledge,” said Robert Platshorn the organizer of the Hollywood event. For Gonzalez, who

"I have lived on this block for three years and have never seen anything more than growing vegetation and a piece of property that is making this neighborhood terrible." What a far cry from what this three-story, 262-seat theater structure used to be. Tucked into a residential neighborhood south of Hollywood Boulevard - which has long been a favorite place for shows, plays and other events. For 50 years, this had been a thriving destination that attracted so many to a facility that sits at 2640 Washington St. Back in 1949, the City of Hollywood sold the land for $10 to the Little Theater of Hollywood with a clause saying it would take back the property if it was ever abandoned or not used for community theater. While the City of Hollywood got involved in the initial sale of the property, making sure that it was going to be sold for what it had originally been zoned for, the only deed restriction placed on the property was that it would be used for what it originally been bought for - or a public meeting place - such as a church. Although the new owners, Iglesia Real Church of Hollywood never got back with the South Florida Sun Times for an official statement, the residents of the community have been heard loud and clear. Tonya Alvarez lives across the street from the facility. While she has been worried that her kids - or the children in the neighborhood would stray onto the property, which has a NO TRESPASSING sign on the fence, the news that is on the property was good enough to put her mind at ease. "When we moved here two years ago, there was talk that the property would be sold and residential property would take over," Alvarez said. "But now that I see this sign that says this Iglesia Real Church is coming, at least the property will not be let go." Even though many fought to save the Hollywood Playhouse, it fell victim to poor planning and greed over the past decade. The property went into foreclosure with bank and Hollywood engaged in litigation over its future. Those like Ashley McCord had grown up enjoying her community theater. The thought of losing this piece of history was certainly a disappointment. But she also understands that people fought hard to keep it open. "I realize that so many people went to great lengths to keep this open," McCord said. "They went as far as to take donations to attempt to buy the facility, but in the end, I guess this wasn't as important to some as it was to others."

started G FarmaLabs to apply science and global resources to improve health and wellbeing at the adult stage of life, has continued to strive to provide access to safe, effective and affordable medicines and related health care services to the people who need them. In adult markets like Washington and Colorado, they offer their adult lifestyle brands which promote good health and a sense of enjoyment. "When I left this area for California, there was no way that I ever envisioned myself returning to be in a position to speak on this subject," Gonzalez explained. "I felt that I had so much to share with people about how cannabis is so overlooked and really misunderstood." What Gonzalez did was talk about his business and practices as well as the importance of the medical marijuana vote coming up. His experiences in the industry provided so many with the answers needed to form their opinions. He also talked about the medicinal properties of cannabis becoming part of Western medicine in the mid19th century when strains from Egypt and India were imported by the French and British, respectively. Between 1840 and 1940, English, Irish, French and then North American physicians and pharmacists testified to the usefulness of various cannabis preparations for pain relief and other conditions including malaria, rheumatism, migraine headaches, gout and glaucoma. Cannabis was in the Canadian pharmacopeia until it was added to a list of restricted drugs in 1923 and its possession, cultivation and distribution became illegal. "Its therapeutic potential has been recognized since ancient times—for at least 4,000 years," Gonzalez explained. "In Egypt, there is evidence that cannabis has been used in medicine since the days of the pharaohs. In China, cannabis was used as a surgical anesthetic in the second century C.E. All around the ancient world, from Babylonia to Israel to Rome, cannabis has been used as a medicine." Pointing to the fact that doctors in this country have spent countless years on researching prescription medicines, they have fallen short when it comes to taking the time to see what the benefits of cannabis really are. Hollywood resident Margo Stein is an advocate of the legalization of marijuana. A breast cancer patient who found it tough to eat during chemotherapy, she was introduced to the benefits of cannabis by here sister. While she was skeptical about smoking it because it was illegal, the results outweighed the risks involved. "Nobody ever tells you to put down that glass of whisky or

vodka, which can tear up your liver," Stein said. "Adult choices have to be made, and when my appetite spiked and the side effects from the chemo subsided, I was sold." Stein is not alone. making choices to use cannabis - in any form is an adult decision. Just like underage children drink alcohol now, you cannot take something that is proven to work away from adults who have the right to make their own choices. "I am generally old school," Stein pointed out. "But when it came to my own body, I told my kids the same thing I spoke with them about alcohol. You do not use this until you are an adult and can clearly make your own decisions." If passed this November, the amendment would allow for a physician to recommend cannabis therapy to any patient at his or her discretion. However, neither qualified patients (nor their designated caregivers) would be permitted to cultivate cannabis. Rather, the proposal authorizes the state Department of Health to determine rules within six-months following the act’s passage for the registration of ‘Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers’ (dispensaries), which would be authorized to cultivate, process, and sell medicinal cannabis and other related products. If regulators do not begin registering these facilities within this time frame, “any Florida citizen shall have standing to seek judicial relief to compel compliance with the Department’s constitutional duties,” the measure states. No matter what side of this fence you sit on, you have to admit that adults do have the right to make their own decisions - just like you and I. Just keep that in mind when your vote will count and make a major difference to so many! Even during the break, the City Commission is always available to answer and address questions

By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - As many of our readers know, the City of Hallandale Beach Commission does not hold meetings in the month of July. This does not mean we are not available. Actually, many residents know you can always contact me and our city staff is working 24/7/365. The commission is also connected. Modern technology has worked to provide a more accessible and accountable government. Even over break I enjoy writing my column. I like to catch up on issues that may have not been covered over the months or items that are ongoing. It is hard to write this week’s column only about city activities. With Israel under threat of constant bombing from Hamas, pot holes and permits have been put in a bit of perspective for me and I hope you agree. On a personal note, this past Sunday my family and I witnessed residents of Colorado uniting at the State capitol in a show of support and solidarity for Israel and peace. While my children have grown up around city politics, they have not seen a march at a state capitol. As a

family we had mixed emotions witnessing this event together while war continues ragging. Growing up in freedom, they are now learning how fragile freedom can be. It is not just a word, it is what we enjoy because others fought and sacrificed for it. Over the past days my family and I, like many people around the country and world, have been praying for Israel, peace and all the lost lives. In my opinion, all the lives lost are on the hands of Hamas and their reign of hate. This is the one fact that needs to be repeated and repeated. Israel is defending itself. Having been able to visit the Middle East, I have seen the vast differences between the countries. On a city to city basis I have seen the people like you and I wanting basically the same thing, a place to live and raise a family. Hamas is not any different then another hate group. Good people and leaders to stand up against them. I received a call on Monday from Rabbi Schwartz from Chabbad of South Broward. The young college woman wanted to hold a prayer vigil on their property. After hearing about the hate

attacks on the synagogue in North Miami Beach they were concerned about their own safety. They had also received hate threats after posting their meeting on Facebook. I received the call while out west, so I was quite alarmed to hear about what was going on in South Florida. I called our city manager and was assured that our police department was on alert. I am glad to report the event took place without incident. We all need to stand united against these groups that continue to oppress, enslave and kill innocent people and children in the guise of religion. Pope Francis’s prayer and plea to stop all the killing of all our young children was heart wrenching. Let us all hope it reaches the ears of those that want only to destroy Israel and America. Our city is very fortunate to have such diversity. We need to continue to celebrate our diversity and continue to be a great example for all of our young children. This past weekend, I also received a call from a resident on NE 3rd about flooding. It is rainy season and at that time we apparently received one inch of rain in one hour. Luckily, no home

was flooded due to the temporary pumping system that has been in place. One pump was working, that is why it took more time to reduce the level of water. I need to remind our residents that the main storm water project is not on-line yet, so we are monitoring and maintaining the temporary system. Last week FPL had to relocate power lines in the area and pile drive new poles. This work has been completed. City staff has verified that Lanzo has the large pumping

equipment ready to be installed. Currently, the city manager will be meeting to review the next steps to ensure that Lanzo finally finishes the project. In August, the city will be resurfacing 14th Avenue and finishing the roadway restoration. City staff continues to work one on one with each condominium property to make sure construction impacts are addressed. Please remember it is hurricane season. Our city is ready, are you? Do you know that once a storm strikes our first re-

sponders must retreat until after the storm passes? That means there may likely be a time when you are on your own. Be prepared with water, food and other needs to sustain your health and safety. As always, please feel free to contact me anytime with your questions, concerns and ideas to make our city a better place at my office: (954) 457-1318. Cell/text: (954) 6325700. Local dentist using Laser for ‘painless’ dentistry • Using the LightWalkerTM laser, gum disease can be treated virtually painlessly and in a way that promotes healing Dental technology has truly made leaps and bounds in the past 20 years due to the increase in communication of research and innovative ideas. The next big breakthrough is here, and it is dental laser treatment. Dr. Brian Nitzberg has acquired a Lares LightWalkerTM Dental Laser, which can be used to treat cavities, gum disease, root canals, TMJ pain and a variety of other dental procedures, usually without the need for anesthesia. Dr. Nitzberg purchased the new laser and has received extensive training and certification in its use. Lasers have been used safely and successfully in dentistry for many years, but Dr. Nitzberg is the first dentist in the area to have the new Lares LightWalkerTM laser. Dental lasers are approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and their applications are very safe. Have you been told that you need gum

surgery, there is a new procedure that offers a less invasive and effective alternative. Lasers particularly useful in the painless treatment of gum disease. More than half of adults have some degree of gum disease, which, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. Gum disease has been linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke and even respiratory disease. According to Dr. Nitzberg, using the dental laser, gum disease can be treated virtually painlessly and in a way that promotes healing. “With the laser treatment there is no scalpel or sutures, less discomfort afterward, and patients usually return to their daily routine with little disruption.” The dental laser can also be used to prepare cavities for filling without a drill or a shot! According to Dr. Nitzberg, the dental laser does not cause vibration like a dental

drill, and most patients do not require anesthesia. “Patients love it—no injections, no annoying whine sound, and no numbness afterward,” says Dr. Nitzberg. Although the laser does not replace the drill in every case, for most patients it provides painless dentistry. The Biostimulation setting on the dental laser allows areas to heal faster and decrease pain as well. By activating the cells in your tissue, laser light has the ability to stimulate the biological function of tissues and the cells that they are composed of. This can be used for common TMJ pain or even preventative measures when doing procedures with anticipated soreness. Dr. Nitzberg’s office is one-of-a-kind, with a full time lab and cutting edge technology. In addition to this new advance in laser technology, Dr. Nitzberg’s office also offers digital x-rays for decreased exposure, Oral ID diagnostic cancer screening lights, saliva testing for HPV and gum disease, and computer scanned impressions. Back-to-school nutrition primer: Give kids a healthy head start on academic success • Having adequate nutrition provides children with the energy they need to learn, and increases their ability to concentrate, focus and solve problems (BPT) - Parents arm their kids with a plethora of school supplies, new attire and the latest technol-

Can Personality really change? By Dr. Ron Q… I just bumped into someone I knew as a teenager. He’s just moved into my building, and has made overtures to begin a friendship. However, I remember him as a bossy, brattish, and abusive adolescent. I am hesitant to get involved. Am I wrong?...Do people’s personality change as they age? G.H. Hollywood A…Whether or not basic personality structures changes with age, is a highly debated issue…There are some modern researchers, like psychologist Sanjav Srivastava who believe that “not only do people continue to change after age 30, but in some way change more.”…Her thoughts are in some good company, like the thoughts of renown philosophers Carl Jung, Siddhartha (Buddah), and St Augustine. All emphasized the tremendous changes that can be made in mid-latter life… However, other researchers and philosophers disagree with this idea…Linda Breytspraak, from the Center of Aging Studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City quotes Costa McCrae; “Personality remains the same in men and women throughout life. Particular traits in youth and middle age will not only persist, but may be more pronounced in later on.” Breytspraak’s beliefs are also in good company. Such as the grandfather of modern psychology, Sigmund Freud. He believed the basis of personality was formed within the first 5 years of life. There are many factors that can help form personality style. Genetic and biological variables appear to play a large role in forming personality, but one should not easily dismiss the role personal experience, learning, and environmental factors (including cultural) play… While I do believe it is possible to make tremendous changes in personality over a lifetime, it also wouldn’t surprise me if a crude, spoiled, abrasive brat of a child, developed into a crude spoiled, brat of a man. But on the other hand, why not give this person the benefit of the doubt…Good friendships can be hard to find. Dr. Ron Dr. Ron is in private practice in Hallandale Beach Fl. demic success is often overlooked: nutrition. "Having adequate nutrition provides children with the energy they need to learn, and increases their ability to stay on task, to concentrate, focus and solve problems," says speech pathologist Lauren Zimet, an expert on oral motor/feeding and picky eating, and founder of The Healthy Foundations Program. "When nutrition is inadequate, there's an increase in moodiness and irritability and a decrease in perseverance and patience." Zimet notes recent studies have shown that brain development in young children is negatively impacted by inadequate nutrition. This affects learning in school as well as overall function throughout the child's lifetime. She reports that many of her clients find that incorporating a few powerful fruits, vegetables and supplements into a child's diet improves brain growth and fosters success at school. 1. AVOCADOS FOR COMPREHENSION Avocados are rich in a fatty acid known as oleic acid, which builds myelin, an important part of the white matter of the brain. Myelin helps information travel through the brain and can assist kids' comprehension of complex topics in school. 2. BERRIES FOR MEMORY Berries are full of antioxidants that are great for boosting brain power. Berries

When a parent models healthy eating in front of a child, it normalizes it for the child. Keep in mind that coercing, bribing or forcing the child to eat new foods can also result in power struggles and be counterproductive.

One of the most important components of academic success is often overlooked: nutrition. are sometimes referred to as "super fruits" because most of them contain fisetin and flavenoids, which are great for improving memory. Blueberries are particularly great snacks for supporting brain health. 3. OMEGA-3 FOR FOCUS AND ENERGY The brain is made up of 60-70 percent good fat. Healthy fats, such as omega-3s, support the brain in the area of focus, attention and memory, and they provide long-term energy too. The body needs these fats to build healthy brain cells and hormones, as well as to absorb certain vitamins (A, D, E, K). Experts agree that the safest, most reliable source of omega-3 fats (EPA and DHA) is a high-quality fish oil supplement. Nordic Naturals offers several options in flavors that are appealing to children. Have a selective eater? Picky eaters may not be getting the nutrients essential for optimal brain health

and academic success. Zimet suggests several techniques to help parents get nutrients into their kids' meals: Camouflage: Hide healthy new foods in small quantities within foods kids already love. For example, it's not hard to slip some butternut squash, pumpkin, or sweet potato puree into the orange color of mac-n-cheese. Bridge new foods: Take a food that your child already likes and create something healthy, bridging off the color, texture, taste, or look. For a child who loves french fries, try creating healthier versions like organic baked potato fries, sweet potato fries, or zucchini or squash fries. Lead by example: Parents who want children to eat healthier must make nutrition a priority in their own life as well. Eat and snack on fresh foods and take a Nordic Naturals omega-3 supplement daily. When a parent models healthy

eating in front of a child, it normalizes it for the child. Keep in mind that coercing, bribing or forcing the child to eat new foods can also result in power struggles and be counterproductive. It also gives the child the message that healthy eating is difficult. Patience and normalizing is key. Get creative with smoothies: Smoothies are fun, healthy snacks that are like treats to kids. It's easy to make tasty, nutritious smoothies. Frozen ripe bananas make a great smoothie base - then mix in a little unsweetened almond milk, rice milk, or water. Add some of your favorite fruits. Strawberries make the smoothie red, raspberries make the smoothie deep pink or brighter red, and blueberries turn the concoction purple! Sneak in some avocado, which has no discernable taste when ripe, and the creamy texture is ideal for smoothies.

In early 1969, Crosby, Stills and Nash was an immediate hit with singles such as: “Marrakesh Express” and Stills “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.” Stills was able to play almost every instrument on the album, earning him the nickname Captain Manyhands. All three have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame twice. They are also in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, honored for both as a group and individ-

Lot 19 Dale Chihuly 2 piece Seaform Art Glass Suite Bowl signed Chihuly. Measures 14" across. More than any other of Chihuly’s sculptures, the Seaforms look like nature’s offspring. A vegetal energy radiates from them. They resemble no species of plant, however. And they resist being perceived as containers. Yet their brilliant hues and expanding shapes are directly descended from two previous generations of forms - the erect Blanket Cylinders and the billowing Pilchuck Baskets. Dale Chihuly (born September 20, 1941), is an American glass sculptor and entrepreneur. His works are considered unique to the field of blown glass, "moving it into the realm of large-scale sculpture," (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). The technical difficulties of working with glass forms are considerable, yet Chihuly uses it as the primary medium for installations and environmental artwork. Pre-Sale Estimate: $4000-$6000.

Prepping for a party: Make-ahead appetizers make summer entertaining easy (BPT) - Don't let the first "ding-dong" of the doorbell catch you up to your elbows in dirty dishes and half-finished appetizers. For your next party, prepare your appetizers ahead of time with these simple tips and recipes: "Let's not reinvent the wheel. Take items you already know how to make and turn them cool and trendy with some add-ons," says Chef Richard Worthen, culinary instructor at The Art Institute of Seattle. You can dress up egg, tuna or chicken salad with a variety of flavors and spices. He recommends chopped cilantro instead of chopped parsley, adding chipotle to egg salad or adding almonds, walnuts or pistachio nuts for some crunch. For a gluten-free appetizer, try lettuce cups. "You could do a quick chop of a variety of three-to-four items and put it in a lettuce cup," says Chef Brian Shulse of The Art Insti-

squares

Gently mix all the ingredients together and refrigerate, covered, until ready to use. This will hold for two to four hours (or up to overnight). To serve, gently mix and place in a serving bowl with a spoon, with the chips on the side.

tomatoes and rubbing the juice and pulp into french bread slices. This can serve as a base for any type of spread. Try these easy makeahead recipes courtesy of Shulse:

tute of California - San Francisco, a campus of Argosy University. "It can also go traditional Asian - ground pork with some spices that can just be popped in the microwave to heat before serving." "You could do a flat bread with seasonal vegetables on it," Shulse says. "Make the bread in advance, roll it out, put olive oil on it, add seasonal vegetables, and bake." Worthen recommends tomato toast, which is made by taking cut

SPICY AHI TARTARE 2 pounds Yellow fin/Ahi tuna, diced in 1/8-inch pieces 1/2 cup cucumber, washed, dried, diced in 1/8-inch pieces(optional- peel) 1-2 garlic cloves, crushed, peel removed and minced

1-2 serrano or jalapeno pepper, seeded, minced fine 1 shallot, finely minced (substitute 2 green onions) 1 orange, washed, dried, zested, juiced 1 lime, juiced 1 teaspoon dry oregano (or 2 teaspoons fresh) 2 teaspoon ground cumin 2 teaspoon kosher salt (or more to taste 1 teaspoon sugar 1 bag thick potato chips (like Kettle chips) or crackers

Over medium-low heat, preheat a medium size saute pan for 30 seconds. Add the sesame oil and swirl the pan until it is fully coated with oil. Add the onion, garlic, white part of the green onion and ginger. Sweat for several minutes until the mixture begins to look translucent. Turn up the heat to high and add the ground pork. Cook on high, stirring until the meat turns pale brown. Turn the heat back down to medium-low and add the salt, diced water chestnuts, soy sauce and Hoisin sauce. Cook until moisture evaporates. Turn the pan off and add the Chinese hot mustard to taste. After this has cooled down, cover and refrigerate. Can be made up to four days in advance. Reheat gently in a microwave or saute pan until just warmed through. Place in a serving bowl, top with peanuts, and serve with lettuce cups.
