Stress Impact Of COVID-19
The Deep State’s Divide and Conquer Strategy Is Working
Ways To Protect Your Health
Is this so-called populist uprising actually a manufactured race war and electionyear referendum on who should occupy the White House?
Given these difficult circumstances, it’s more important than ever for people to know about coping mechanisms to better manage stress, protect their immune system, and increase their chances of staying healthy.
By John Whitehead - The Rutherford Inst.
What exactly is going on? Is this revolution? Is this anarchy? Is this a spectacle engineered to distract us from the machinations of the police state? Is this a sociological means of re-setting our national equilibrium? Is this a Machiavellian scheme designed to further polarize the populace and undermine our efforts to stand unified against government tyranny? Is this so-called populist uprising actually a manufactured race war and election-year referendum on who should occupy the White House? Whatever it is, this—the racial hypersensitivity without racial justice, the kowtowing to politically correct bullies with no regard for anyone else’s free speech rights, the violent blowback after years of governmentsanctioned brutality, the mob mindset that is overwhelming the rights of the individual, the oppressive glowering of the Nanny State, the seemingly righteous indignation full of sound and fury that in the end signifies nothing, the partisan divide that grows more impassable with Tyrant, Page 5A
omy is one example: we don’t know how or when the markets will recover. What will the business community look like postCOVID? Will people continue to work remotely, and which companies will thrive and which will crumble? Will entire industries – like cruising – buckle under the strain? How will communities deal with their struggling populations, vacant real estate, and shuttered businesses? “Now is the time for nonlinear (lateral) thinking, characterized by expansion in multiple directions rather than in a
The millions of infections and hundreds of thousands of deaths that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought globally are creating stress over everything from personal health to employment, lifestyle, and finances. Given these difficult circumstances, it’s more important than ever for people to know about coping mechanisms to better manage stress, protect their immune system, and increase their chances of staying healthy, says Dr. Nammy Patel, DDS, author of Age With Style: Your Guide To A Youthful Smile & Healthy Living. “COVID is maximizing stress for so many people,” Dr. Patel says. “It has a far-reaching impact into every part of our lives, and if we don’t manage the stress, it severely affects our bodily systems – causing burned-out adrenals, high cortisol, and thyroid issues, to name a few consequences of highstress levels. Thus, the immune system is lowered, and we are more vulnerable to illness.

Afraid To Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone? COVID Requires Taking Steps To Adapt To New Circumstances COVID-19 has disrupted the business world, and the “normal” of a few months ago may never return. In this new landscape, how business leaders process and react to new challenges will be crucial. Using critical thinking skills to make sound business decisions in a complicated, constantly changing world has never been more important, says Dr. Jim White, founder and president of JL White International and bestselling author of Opportunity Investing: How to Revitalize Urban and Rural Communities with Opportunity Funds (www. opportunityinvesting.com).
“Critical thinking in the COVID-19 era will separate effective leaders from the pack,” Dr. White says. “Before, many of us relied on linear thinking – that is, solving problems in a step-by-step fashion. When life proceeds in an orderly way, we can draw conclusions based on probabilities: this is what happened before; therefore, it will happen again. Or, we use contingency statements: if THIS is true, THAT is true. “But COVID-19 changed those premises. Now, there are too many unknowns to rely on lazy thinking. The volatile econ-

If it’s simply debris causing blockages, removal and cleaning of faucets and shower heads sometimes clears up the issues. In some cases, further

Comfort Zone From Page 1A straight line. The concept has multiple starting points from which we can apply logic to a problem.” Dr. White offers the following advice to developing non-linear critical thinking: Step out of your comfort zone. “Critical thinking requires that we see and interpret information from a different perspective,” Dr. White says. “In our old comfort zones we weren’t necessarily required to make difficult decisions. But navigating COVID requires taking steps to adapt to new circumstances. For companies, it means being nimble, finding opportunities and ways to innovate. It may mean drastically reducing a brick-and-mortar footprint in favor of a digital presence. It may mean dumping obsolete inventory at a discount. Or it may mean lay-offs.” Dr. White thinks many people have closed minds and don’t adapt well to change. “In military training, one is taught to pivot, to escape and adapt, since there is no such thing as a perfect set of circumstances,” he says. “The species that is capable of adapting well is the species that survives.” Don’t jump to conclusions. “When jumping out of your comfort zone,” Dr. White says, “be careful not to jump to conclusions as well. Instead, ask ques-
tions, and organize and evaluate information. For instance, business owners should be asking, is now the right time to be reopening? Who says the pandemic is over? Who is cautioning against reopening? What will reopening look like? Coming to a valid conclusion requires study-
ing the available data: what is happening in other parts of the world, the country, or the industry? “One criterion we rely on is, what do experts say? What are the credentials of these experts? Carefully evaluating data has never been more crucial than
during this pandemic.” Separate truth from belief. “People often have trouble separating what is valid from what is true because of ingrained beliefs, which we all have. This ‘belief bias’ interferes with our ability to think logically,” Dr. White says. “Critical thinking means making
decisions based only on data. For business leaders that means putting aside what worked in the past and being completely open to new practices and protocols.” “In the age of COVID-19, we must embrace challenges and make solid decisions based on critical-thinking principles.”
Help! The Temple Is On Fire! By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil
Legend has it that Napoleon, the great French leader, was once passing through a small town in Europe, when he heard weeping. Wanting to know what was going on, he followed the sound to inside a building, where he found men, women and children sitting on low chairs & benches, crying. The building was a synagogue and the room which had a magnificent candelabra chandelier at its center, had only a few candles lit. Bothered by the scene and wanting an explanation, Napoleon inquired to the reason for their sadness. They explained that they were mourning for the destruction of the temple. At that point Napoleon became very angered that people would have the audacity to harm the Temple of such good people, and inquired further to where the damage was, as whatever parts he saw still looked intact. No no, they explained. “We’re mourning for the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, the Beit Hamikdash, that was destroyed by Rome over 1700 years ago. Once a year on Tisha B’Av, the 9th day on the Jewish month of Av, we get together to read the Book of Lamentations and mourn the Temple’s destruction while praying that we very soon merit its rebuilding.” To this Napoleon responded, “WOW! A people that remembers the destruction of their land and temple after so many hundreds of years, will surely witness its rebuilding.” Tisha B’Av was actu-

ally the day that both Temples were destroyed. The First Temple built by King Solomon was destroyed by the Babylonians (modern day Iraq) in 3338 (423 bce). After completing the building of the Second Temple in 3412 (349 bce), it too was destroyed on the 9th of Av, this time by the Romans in 3829 (69 ce). That was also the day on which the Jews were expelled from Spain in 5252 (1492 ce), the start of World War I in 5674 (1914 ce) and the Gush Katif expulsion in 5765 (2005 ce).
If you were to witness any such atrocity, how would you respond? What would you say? What would you do? The Talmud tells us that although the Babylonians & Romans did the dirty work, it was actually the will of G-d, due to the people not behaving in a loving way one to another. Furthermore the Talmud tells us, that as long as the Temple is not rebuilt in our time, it’s as if it was destroyed in our time! In other words, since we still don’t have the Temple rebuilt, it’s

Back to School Fundraiser: Provides Students with Safe School Supplies
The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically increased the need for basic school supplies for students in Broward County schools. Business closures, layoffs, reduced hours and more have made food and rent extremely difficult for many struggling families. Whether in
Tyrant From Page 1A every passing day—is not leading us anywhere good. Certainly it’s not leading to more freedom. This draconian exercise in how to divide, conquer and subdue a nation is succeeding. For one brief moment in the wake of George Floyd’s death, it seemed as if finally “we the people” might put aside our differences long enough to stand united in outrage over the government’s brutality. That sliver of unity didn’t last. We may be worse off now than we were before. Suddenly, no one seems to be talking about any of the egregious governmental abuses that are still wreaking havoc on our freedoms: police shootings of unarmed individuals, invasive surveillance, roadside blood draws, roadside strip searches, SWAT team raids gone awry, the military industrial complex’s costly wars, pork barrel spending, pre-crime laws, civil asset forfeiture, fusion centers, militarization, armed drones, smart policing carried out by AI robots, courts that march in lockstep with the police state, schools that function as indoctrination centers, bureaucrats that keep the Deep State in power. The more things change, the more they stay the same. How do you persuade a populace to embrace totalitarianism, that goosestepping form of tyranny in which the government has all of the power and “we the people” have none You persuade the people that the menace they face (imaginary or not) is so sinister, so overwhelming, so fearsome that the only way to surmount the danger is by empowering the government to take all necessary steps to quash it, even if that means allowing government jackboots to trample all over the Constitution. This is how you use the politics of fear to persuade a freedom-endowed people to shackle themselves to a dictatorship.

It works the same way every time. The government’s overblown, extended wars on terrorism, drugs, violence, illegal immigration, and socalled domestic extremism have been convenient ruses used to terrorize the populace into relinquishing more of their freedoms in exchange for elusive promises of security. Having allowed our fears to be codified and our actions criminalized, we now find ourselves in a strange new world where just about everything we do is criminalized, even our ability to choose whether or not to wear a mask in public during the COVID19 pandemic. Strangely enough, in the face of outright corruption and incompetency on the part of our elected officials, Americans in general remain relatively gullible, eager to be persuaded that the government can solve the problems that plague us, whether it be terrorism, an economic depression, an environmental disaster, or a global pandemic. We have relinquished control over the most intimate aspects of our lives to government officials who, while they may occupy seats of authority, are neither wiser, smarter, more in tune with our needs, more knowledgeable about our problems, nor more aware of what is really in our best interests. The lesson is this: once a free people allows the government inroads into their freedoms or uses those same freedoms as bargaining chips for security, it quickly becomes a slippery slope to outright tyranny. Nor does it seem to matter whether it’s a Democrat or a Republican at the helm anymore. Indeed, the bureaucratic mindset on both sides of the aisle now seems to embody the same philosophy of authoritarian government, whose priorities are to milk “we the people” of our hard-earned money (by way of taxes, fines and fees) and remain in control and in power. Modern government in general is acting illogically, even psychopathically. When our own govern-
dedicated to serving students and teachers in Broward County Public Schools, Broward Education Foundation has pivoted to a virtual Back-to-School drive as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this unprecedented year, Broward Education Foundation is fundraising to provide safely sealed individual 18-piece basic school supply kits for students who attend 112 Title I elementary schools in Broward County. “Broward Education Foundation is proven agile, adept and responsive to shifting needs in education and our community” said Tim Curtin, board chair of Broward Education Foundation.
ment no longer sees us as human beings with dignity and worth but as things to be manipulated, maneuvered, mined for data, manhandled by police, conned into believing it has our best interests at heart, mistreated, and then jails us if we dare step out of line, punishes us unjustly without remorse, and refuses to own up to its failings, we are no longer operating under a constitutional republic. Instead, what we are experiencing is a pathocracy: tyranny at the hands of a psychopathic government, which “operates against the interests of its own people except for favoring certain groups.” So where does that leave us?
“We’ve had to completely reconfigure this annual campaign for maximum safety, and have made it seamless for anyone to sponsor an individual student, a class or an entire school. A gift of just $10 safely equips one student for success.” Statistically, more than 90% of students in Broward’s top 40 Title I elementary schools are enrolled in free and reduced lunch programs; Pre-K -12 overall that number is 65%. “Whether educating students in person or online, they all need basic school supplies,” said Shea Ciriago, executive director of Broward Education Foundation. “The impact of
Having allowed the government to expand and exceed our reach, we find ourselves on the losing end of a tug-of-war over control of our country and our lives. And for as long as we let them, government officials will continue to trample on our rights, always justifying their actions as being for the good of the people. Yet the government can only go as far as “we the people” allow. Therein lies the problem. The powers-that-be want us to believe that our job as citizens begins and ends on Election Day. They want us to believe that we have no right to complain about the state of the nation unless we’ve cast our vote one way or the other. They want us to
COVID-19 is reverberating throughout our community. It is more important now, than ever before, to keep students engaged, focused and learning.” Ciriago continued, “We hope we can count on the individuals and businesses who have not been impacted as strongly to support these children. Our students are resilient, but they can’t do it without us.” The fundraising campaign runs through August 21st. remain divided over politics, hostile to those with whom we disagree politically, and intolerant of anyone or anything whose solutions to what ails this country differ from our own. What they don’t want us talking about is the fact that the government is corrupt, the system is rigged, the politicians don’t represent us, the electoral college is a joke, most of the candidates are frauds, and, as I point out in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People, we as a nation are repeating the mistakes of history—namely, allowing a totalitarian state to reign over us. As we once again find ourselves faced with the prospect of voting for the

COVID-19 From Page 1A “This era we are living in is very traumatic, and it’s very concerning. In dentistry, gum disease, sleep disturbances or apnea, and teeth breakage can all be evidence of stress. Poor oral health, as studies show, can be a gateway to medical issues. Develop A Morning Ritual “Deep breathing exercises can be calming and get you out of the hyper state,” Dr. Patel says. “You want to get rid of the ‘fight or flight’ mode and enter the ‘rest and digest’ state of mind.”
Dr. Patel has the following suggestions people can incorporate into their daily lives to better deal with stress: Adhere To A Healthy Diet While in quarantine or a new normal in which people are spending the vast majority of their time at home, having healthy foods at home and not over-snacking are vital considerations. “We must be more mindful of the foods we put in our bodies,” Dr. Patel says. “Eat as many greens and whole foods as possible. Avoid dairy products as they increase mucus produc-
tion in the sinus and the chest, leading to lots of sneezing and congestion. The coronavirus enters the nose and makes a home in the sinus, and to increase immunity, it’s important that the sinus and chest are not inflamed. Food prep makes it easier to eat healthy while working from home. Prepare salads and other healthy meals in advance.”
Don’t Over-indulge In Drinking “For some people, drinking is the only source of enjoyment during the pandemic,” Dr. Patel says. “And we see people who are isolating having Zoom calls with friends while drinking wine. The problem is that one glass turns into two or more, and with the sugar content of wine, you may wake up during the night. This disturbs sleep, and sleep is
when the immune system regenerates. Restorative sleep is essential to our health.” Take Vitamin Supplements “Often, those with adrenal fatigue don’t take in enough essential nutrients as stress increases their body’s nutritional demands,” Dr. Patel says. “To address adrenal and cortisol burnout, take multivitamins in

Many people don’t like to exercise, but Dr. Patel notes exercise doesn’t have to be rigorous to be effective. “A type of exercise one enjoys doing at home like walking, running, or yoga goes a long way toward releasing stress hormones,” she says. “And for those who like intense workouts, it’s all good in terms of reducing stress. Another good stress management technique is using biofeedback mechanisms like alpha state meditations to increase immunity.” “The disruption of daily life by COVID-19 has caused us to rethink many things that we do,” Dr. Patel says. “How we deal with stress needs to be a priority now, and it’s not overly difficult if you develop good daily habits.”
Broward Ramps Up Enforcement: To Keep Our Economy Open As the number of COVID-19 cases, positivity rates and hospitalizations continue to rise, due in part to some patrons and businesses not complying with local emergency orders, it has become necessary for Broward County to increase its regulatory efforts and increase penalties for those who violate emergency orders. Broward County’s actions are designed to contain the renewed and rapid spread of the virus, as South Florida remains the state’s epicenter for cases of COVID-19. This past week, Broward County Administrator Bertha Henry issued Emergency Order 20-21, which is an all-inclusive order to clarify previous Emergency Orders. The Order was effective at 12:01 AM on Friday, July 10, 2020. All businesses that violate local emergency orders will be forced to close for 24 hours after
their first citation, with each subsequent citation incurring an additional 72 hours of closure (e.g. 96 hour closure after a second citation, 168 hour closure after a third citation etc.). Residents are urged to report business violations online at Mybroward.Broward.org or call 311. Both types of reports can be made anonymously. Aventura Community Green Garden The Aventura Community Green Garden at Founders Park South features 4 by 12-foot garden sections filled with sterilized topsoil for residents to grow vegetables, flowers, herbs, and other plants. Research has shown that spending time outside is good for our bodies and our minds. I’m sure you’ve experienced these benefits: After feeling stressed out or bored indoors, you step outside and your spirits lift. Gardening offers opportunities for physical activity and, in the case of community gardens, socialization. Here are some of the health benefits according to AARP: Exposure to vitamin D Vitamin D increases your calcium levels, which benefits your bones and immune system. A 2014 Italian study, published on the National Institutes of Health website, found that exposure to sunlight helped older adults achieve adequate serum vitamin D levels. So outdoor activities like gardening are a perfect way to get your sunshine while pursuing a fun hobby. (But don’t forget the sunscreen to protect your
skin, and sunglasses for your eyes.) Mood-boosting benefits A study in the Netherlands, cited by CNN, suggests that gardening fights stress even better than other hobbies. Participants completed a stressful task and were then told to read inside or go outdoors and garden for 30 minutes. The gardening group reported better moods afterward, and their blood tests showed lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Enjoyable aerobic exercise Gardening is a great form of aerobic exercise; plus, you might become so engrossed in your work that you don’t even realize you’re breaking a sweat. Pulling weeds, reaching for various plants and tools, and twisting and bending as you plant will work new muscles in your body and help with strength, stamina, and flexibility. Helps combat loneliness After retirement, many people struggle with fewer socialization opportunities, and community gardens can be a fun way to engage with others while provid-
ing benefits to neighborhoods. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, community gardens are “collaborative projects on shared open spaces where participants join together in the maintenance and products of the garden, including healthful and affordable fresh fruits and vegetables.” The American Community Gardening Association recognizes that community gardening improves people’s quality of life by providing a catalyst for neighborhood and community development, stimulating social interaction, encouraging selfreliance, beautifying neighborhoods, producing nutritious food, reducing family food budgets, conserving resources and creating opportunities for recreation, exercise, therapy, and education. Getting Started To start gardening, Green Garden membership and garden section rental are required. Members must be Aventura residents. Garden sections will be assigned in the order that the applications and required fees are received. The annual fee for one garden
section is $110. Membership is valid for one year from the registration date. New members may join at any time during the year, providing they are 18 years of age or older. The Aventura Community Green Garden will be open daily (except Tuesdays) from 9:00 a.m. to noon and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Park hours may be subject to change due to the City’s response to the Coronavirus pandemic. Registration is available online only on the City’s Online Registration System (ORS). Please visit
Aircraft Built for Clean Air Guarantees Air Quality Akin To a Clinical Operating Room The Lufthansa Group continues to ramp up its services to the United States, resuming flights to its key, global gateways. This week, the Group’s flagship carrier, Lufthansa, will resume service to Miami, FL, operating three weekly flights from Miami International Airport to the airline’s largest hub in Frankfurt, Germany, starting on July 15. Lufthansa is continuing to meet the demand of its loyal customers throughout the United States and will now connect the South Florida region to its growing network of international destinations that are slowly easing travel restrictions. The resumed route will operate out of Miami on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays using an Airbus A340300 with a three-class configuration of Business, Premium Economy and Economy classes. Initially, flights will operate three times per week in July. Beginning July 29 until October 24, the end of the summer schedule, the flights increase to five times weekly. “The Lufthansa Group is committed to connecting passengers and serving as a bridge between the continents. We are especially excited to resume service for our Miamibased customers as we expand our network connections for the benefit of all travelers in this global city,” said Larry Ryan,
senior director of sales, USA for the Lufthansa Group. By the end of October, over 70 percent of the originally planned long-haul routes will be operated by the Group carriers. Additionally, 90 percent of all originally planned short-and medium-haul destinations will be served again. Throughout the summer months, Lufthansa is adding important connections for its local Miami-area customers traveling to Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India. These include flights within Germany, as well as to other countries including Austria, France, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland. Flights to Israel have already resumed, and connections to the UAE began on July 3. More than 2,000 weekly flights to over 130 destinations worldwide will be operated by the Lufthansa Group carriers in the remaining months of the summer season. “As the world gradually begins to open up, the desire to travel has increased and there is an ever-growing necessity to see family and friends, as well as conduct important business trips. Lufthansa is continually evaluating additional connections globally,” added Ryan. Fast PCR Corona tests are now available at Frankfurt Airport. With the ease and safety

Lufthansa continues to follow its stringent hygiene guidelines and practices, and has extensive protocols for disinfecting the entire aircraft in order to ensure that the on-board experience protects the health of passengers. The airlines of the Lufthansa Group required that all passengers wear a facial mouth/ nose covering for use while on board their flights. Furthermore, it was recommended that passengers wear this protective covering throughout their entire journey, for example, at the airport before and after the flight, and whenever the required minimum social distance cannot

Plumbing From Page 1A ing based on sound and water pooling issues, problems with leaking pipes or faucets can lead to much larger concerns with water damage. If a pipe breaks and water is flooding your home, you know you need to call a plumber immediately. There are other times that may not be as apparent. It can be easy to ignore a leaky pipe, especially if the leak is small. It doesn’t seem like a big deal. But the truth is that any leaky pipe poses a risk because leaky pipes are more prone to burst. And, even if it doesn’t break, it will increase your water bill, and those costs can add up over time. If a pipe has burst, or if a leak is flooding, a plumber will know where to go to shut off your main water supply. They can quickly find where a leak originates, and they’ll know how to safely change the pipeline through the walls and ceilings of your home. Running Toilet If you hear water filling the tank even though no one has flushed the toilet, don’t just dismiss it as a random occurrence. It means the seal connecting the tank and the bowl isn’t working properly. Running toilets are the leading cause of high water bills, but Practicool can easily and quickly resolve the issue for you. Slow Drain A bathtub or shower should drain almost instantly. If your shower or bathtub takes a long time to drain, it may need more than a liquid solution that unclogs drains. Over time, hair and debris accumulate in bathroom drains. A long-term solution may require Practicool to discuss your options. Short Showers Required Your water heater enables you to take a hot bath or shower. Modern water heaters should provide an adequate amount of hot water for a family. If the performance of your water heater requires short showers, or if you hear unusual noises from your water heater, it may be time to call Practicool who can tell you if it’s feasible to repair your current water heater or whether it would be better to replace it. Such as a tankless water heater. While there are many things around your home you can handle yourself, plumbing probably isn’t one of them. Professional plumbers can inspect and diagnosis a problem. They’ll know where to start and how to fix any issues they identify. Professional plumbers such as Practicool do far more than fix problems with a sink or toilet. They help protect your home from potential plumbing problems and water damage. They can help save you money

Leaking Pipes & Water Damage
Plumbing Video Inspection and headaches. Leak Detection A tiny water leak can create huge problems in a home or business. An undetected water pipe leak will not only dramatically increase your utility bills, but it can also lead to even more expensive water damage and mold. One of the most common issues Practicool finds is a plumbing leak. Many times, homeowners have trouble locating the leak, sometimes not even realizing they have one, but are dismayed by their rising water bill month after month. This is a serious problem that requires the attention of a professional. At Practicool, they specialize in leak detection and plumbing repair. Their professionals will fix your pipes in a safe, reliable, and efficient manner. If you’ve had higher than average water bills, constantly have to refill your pool or hear running water it’s time to call the leak detection specialists at Practicool. Is water pipe leak detection possible if the pipes are behind a wall? Yes, using the newest state-of-the-art detection tools highly trained technicians are able to locate water pipe leaks that are hidden behind walls, underground, above ground, or even with camera inspection. They can even provide water
Slow Drains & Blockages plumbing leak detection within concrete slab foundations. Will insurance cover the cost of plumbing leak detection services? That all depends on your home insurance plan. In many situations when there is a need for water damage restoration many insurance companies will cover the related costs. Practicool representatives can work directly with your home insurance company to verify the need for the plumbing leak detection service, cause of the problem and the repairs that will be required to remedy the situation. What Is a Camera Inspection? It’s wise for homeowners to know what camera inspections are and what they’re used for should a problem ever arise. The purpose of a camera is to be able to see what’s causing a blockage or backup within the sewer pipe without digging up the yard or just guessing what the problem is. Because sewer repairs and pipe replacements are no small task, this helps homeowners avoid expensive repairs without knowing for certain that their problem will be solved when the work is done. The professionals at Practicool specialize in camera inspection. A small, flexible sewer camera is attached to a snake-like cable
that is feed through the pipe until it reaches the cause of the clog or break in the line. The camera records the physical location of the line and depth from the surface, telling the plumber where the blockage is and what work needs to be done to fix it. A sewer inspection camera can identify nearly any problem with your sewer line, but these are some of the most common: Tree root infiltrations These are most common with old pipes made out of clay, cast iron, or other porous materials. Tree roots seek out water sources as they grow, and if they find a crack in your sewer pipe, they’ll grow into it to get to the water inside. Major blockages Sometimes your pipes are in perfect condition, but years of sending things down the pipes that should go in the trashcan has caused a buildup of grease, paper, and other gunk. Sagging or bellied sewer lines When a section of the sewer pipe begins to sag, waste gets caught in the bellied section— resulting in repeat blockages. Broken, cracked, or collapsed pipes Since the camera feeds along
the pipe itself, the plumber will be able to tell if the pipe has collapsed, shifted, or become damaged. Teach Your Children To Avoid The Mistakes You Made With Money Numerous surveys show that many Americans live paycheck to paycheck, have little saved for retirement, and lack fundamental financial knowledge. This has become very apparent during the current Covid-19 economic crisis. Part of the problem, experts say, is that financial literacy has not been emphasized in American education; only 21 states require high school students to take a personal finance-related class. If parents want their children to learn the value of money and how to avoid financial problems as adults, the education has to start at home, says Steve Kruman (www.brycewealth.com), a financial planner and investment advisor at Bryce Wealth Management. “When they understand their parents’ financial situation and gain an understanding of financial literacy,” Kruman says, “they are more likely to appreciate the gifts they are given, or aren’t to be given, and why.” “Summer is the ideal time to teach financial literacy to children
because they can get real handson experience they need. Teaching a child to be financially literate will help them understand that they have to take personal responsibility to be financially secure when mom and dad aren’t there to put the food on the table for them.” Kruman offers the following at-home teaching methods to help children learn financial literacy: Gardening and investing The parent purchases seeds and other starting materials at a garden supply store and has the children keep track of the spending by item on a notepad. “As you work together in the garden, keep a time log of each family member working,” Kruman says. “When it’s harvest time, teach them to count up the cost of production. Help them determine the value of their produce by comparing store prices of the same product, minus the cost of production. They will learn that you can start small as an investor, but putting in more effort along the way makes things grow.”
Working and budgeting Kruman says parents can undercut their teaching of financial literacy by handing out spending money whenever their child wants something. “To learn good financial skills,” Kruman says, “work needs to be taught. They learn they are rewarded for effort, not just for showing up. With their finite amount of money, they can be taught what they’ll have to do as adults – divide it up for bills, spending money, and savings – and that it doesn’t grow on trees every month.” Saving and staying out of debt “A good lesson for your children to learn about debt would be to show them how a loan would work by you being the lender,” Kruman says. “Have them think of something that they would like to buy (such as a new bicycle or laptop) but that they don’t have enough money saved already. You could offer to help them make the purchase much earlier than continuing to save for it, but only in exchange for a loan payment that would be made by reducing their chore money. That
way, they would learn how debt eats up their earning power. You have to instill in them that savings isn’t an option, but rather a necessity, so people don’t become slaves to debt.” Toys and depreciation “Teach them to look at their toys and clothes,” Kruman says. “Toys wear out. Children’s toys and adults’ expensive items, such as cars, need to be purchased to replace old ones, and teaching an understanding of that principle of depreciation is essential to teaching your kids why people need savings. Help them understand depreciation by asking them to compare prices of toys being sold at a yard sale versus a similar toy being sold at a new price online or in a store.”
Social Security, etc. Put those slices next to the remaining part of the apple, and that difference will stick with them.”
Apple slices and taxes “Chances are your kids have already heard you bemoaning taxes,” Kruman says. “Get one of those vertical apple slicers, and cut an apple up in sections to
“Children have a lot of years to grow up,” Kruman says, “and you can give them years of ageappropriate financial lessons in their own home that will last a lifetime. Start now.”
