Water resource is a hot topic year round in Hallandale Beach By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - Floridians are growing more and more aware of how critical our water resources are. Around our country it is one life sustaining element that is quite often taken for granted. Florida is literally surrounded by it. It is east, west, underground and flows all too often from our skies. Residents are becoming more aware due to flooding and also the costs to produce and treat water. Our city has been and remains much focused on water issues. Our goal is to provide affordable drinking water, treating waste water effectively without breaking everyone’s budget and protecting our properties, waterways and oceans through storm water management. I want to update readers on some important projects that are underway and the future plans that will impact these services. NORTHEAST FLOOD CONTROL After the recent flash flooding everyone was reminded how critical this project is. Residents living in the immediate area have dealt with the continued threat of flooding, which has been compounded by the impacts of climate
change and sea level rise. They always brace for the worse. Two years ago was a tipping point for this project. 16-18 inches of rain within 24 hours crippled not just the NE, but our entire community. We had planned and budgeted for a pumping project. The original system was to connect to the existing larger system. The county reversed the DEP policy on the pumping and now required a change to pump down and not out. This increased the project by millions of dollars. I worked with staff and FEMA to acquire funding for the project. It is under construction and moving along as planned. After the recent flooding we are even more excited and told our residents that we do have a system that will truly address flooding. When every community around us is flooded, there is no were to pump. The system is costly and we are fortunate to have partners assisting with the funding. This saved all our taxpayers money. It does not cover operating cost. This cost will be paid through the storm water utility fees on every user’s bill. There are no increases in the fees this year, as it was ap-

proved 2 budgets ago in preparations of the project. WASTE WATER LARGER USER PROJECT Our city is part of the large user agreement with Hollywood Regional Plant. We are still in negotiations with Hollywood in analyzing the true up every year. This is when the actual use is balanced with what was paid. We planned for this in our annual budgeting, but last year the cost doubled. We are also still working to address the ocean outfall issue. Ocean outfalls must be phased out. They will not be for the disposal of pretreated waste water unless there is an extreme event. The City of Hollywood and County have been working on a resolution that requires the phase out and the need to utilize the water from outfalls to be reused. In August we will receive a final report on a proposed solution; Salinity Barrier for our well fields. In short, the water will be pumped down to provide back pressure against saltwater intrusion. The new flooding system will be multi-purposed to reuse the water diverted from the ocean
outfall. So far the agencies involved with the required permitting have been very supportive. The modeling still needs to be performed before the county will sign off, but similar smaller scale projects have shown success. DRINKING WATER We have some of the best drinking water in the state. Last year we placed second to St Mary in a statewide test. All utilities must apply and received a Water Use Permit
WUP. Our permit has been expired and we are working on addressing the future supply with multiple approaches; moving the well fields, the salinity barrier and using our wells, reverse osmosis or purchasing water. The decision must also be made in August as to what alternative we will utilize. The city has already set aside 8 million dollars towards future water needs. The above alternative cost ranges from 27 million to 43
million over 20 years; 27 million would be if the salinity barrier is successful. The city continues to proactively plan for our future water needs. I urge all our readers to follow these issues. Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s Third Two-Week Session of Young Actors/Young Artists Begins Monday, July 8 HOLLYWOOD - The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood begins the third two-week session of the summer camp, “Young Actors and Young Artists” on Monday, July 8. During this program, children between the ages of 6 to 12 years old will gain performing and art-making skills. This session concludes on Friday, July 19. Parents have the option of enrolling their children into either half-day or full-day sessions. From 9 a.m. to noon, the “Young Actors” will participate in storytelling, movement, drama, improvisation, music, costume and set design, and more. Between 1 and 4 p.m., the “Young Artists” will explore drawing, painting, clay, mixed media, printmaking and more. At the end of each session, family and friends will enjoy a presentation and exhibition. All classes are taught at the Center’s Arts School, located at 1626 Harrison St., Hollywood. "You can actually head in any direction in this city and speak up to 11 different languages," Eddy McKnight pointed out. This is a community that has given the residents and visitors what they wanted when it comes to seaside living. With the many sidewalk cafe’s now lining the areas just blocks from the beaches, it reminds Peter Delatorre of many European destinations that happen to be on the water. "I think the appeal is that it takes many people back to their roots," he said. "From shopping and eating to just walking along the road and getting a glimpse
of the Atlantic Ocean is what many, either live or visit here, for." The destination does provide everything from medical services to grocery shopping options. It also provides a location for businesses such as Solutions Pharmacy, which is one of the most popular specialty
stores. Solutions is just part of this landscape that is home to some major businesses. For longtime residents such as Gabe Cohen, the face of this community has indeed changed. He has been here all of his 57 years, and while he embraced the change, there are some things about the old Sunny Isles Beach that really had him thinking. "The 170th Street Movie Theater, McCrory's, Jhan's Ice Cream, Rascal House and the many hotels that have been replaced by upscale condos," Cohen smiles. "I miss the days of the Castaways, Nathan's Hotdogs and spending summers with friends at some of those beachside hotels." Those beachside hotels, which still exist up and down famed Collins Ave. were the
mainstay of families in the 1950s and 60s. Summer getaways included landing at places such as the Aztec, Heathwood and other smaller destinations that offered up that feel of a vacation for the day - or just the weekend. Cohen also knows that living in Sunny Isles Beach these days comes with a mix of locals and part-time residents. As he emerges from Peruvian restaurant where he had his lunch, he begins to walk the 1 mile to his home. Pointing out some of the city's bright spots on his walk back, he talks about the languages he listens to while sitting in the park, shopping or eating. I’m not able to manage my apartment or drive my car anymore. Will my long term care insurance cover someone to help me?
Your long term care insurance covers personal care needed at home only. That means that your policy states that it will cover a home health aide who can help the insured person shower, dress, prepare light meals, do laundry, and straighten up bathroom and kitchen after using them for the care of the patient. The aide can also shop for the insured. Aides are professionals who have been trained with a required amount of state-approved hours in a legitimate training school to provide safe and efficient care with a degree of ethics. They are aware of the services they are allowed to provide under insurance coverage. Services requested other than the aforementioned needs to be agreed upon via a private arrangement between you and your aide. As an agency, we cannot and do not get involved in these arrangements when insurance is involved.
But I don’t need anyone to help me with my shower or getting dressed. I also can put light meals together or pop frozen dinners or restaurant leftovers in the microwave. What I need is someone to drive me shopping, for errands and to doctor appointments. I also need someone to clean my apartment, because I can’t really do it anymore. So, what can I do?
Those are considered private services. You definitely can hire whomever you like. However, you should consider the following items: • How well do you know this person? Can you trust him or her? Are you sure the aide does not have a police record? All of our recommendations have had to be subjected to an FBI investigative screening. • Is the aide insured to cover any liability if you should become injured while in their care? Are you sure? • Will you be paying your share of their Federal taxes? We do. Many people are unaware of their responsibility to IRS when hiring a household employee, or the aide’s legitimate status to work in this country. If you hire privately you are responsible for taxes, checking legal status and overtime pay. They are now your employee and you are legally an employer. REMEMBER… it’s always better to book services through a professional agency. You get top people and avoid a lot of trouble.

Less power, less control, less reward, plus maternal expectations all affected by a bunch of uncomfortable and uncontrollable hormones seem like a formidable constellation for a depressed episode. On Monday, Barba along with Esther Charles, Angela Keller, Rita Horton, Gary Corbitt, Karen Kaya and Officer Michael English brought 50 plus students for the annual event that rewards a job well done on the FCAT. All Level 4's and 5's in 5th grade reading, science and math. The testing, which many have been fought against through the years, is perhaps Principal Sharon Ludwig's biggest victory in the battle to bring the level of education what it is today throughout the Hallandale Beach public feeder system. That annual end of the year breakfast signals yet another positive for a school that has stood tall among others in Broward County. Teachers who have withstood pay cuts and other obstacles to produce award-winning students. "There is little you can add to what these teachers have represented to the success we have achieved," Barba said. "These young men and women have a lot to be thankful for." When IHop and Mr. Clarke host this event each year, it represents the hard work and dedication that goes into getting high scores on the FCAT. The breakfast is a way that one of many local businesses can show their support. Area businesses
have rallied around the elementary school, supporting the students as well as the teachers and administration. This year, there were 10 perfect scores for writing. That is also
important to understand when you considered that grammar was added to the overall scores this year, that makes the marks more prestigious. "In the time we have
been doing these breakfasts, Mr. Clarke and his staff at IHop have continued to be so supportive," Barba pointed out. "This is a breakfast that the students talk about for years to come."

Summer shorts has been making Florida laugh for a long time, only a few days left off to catch the fast and furious fun at Arsht Center’s Carnival Studio Theatre By Eleanor Hannan ESuntimes@aol.com Fifty thousand theatre goers know that summer kicks off with the hilarious and provocative “Summer Shorts Festival,” co-presented with the Adrienne Arsht Center. Known as America’s Short Play Festival, it is one incredible line-up of scripts written by the country’s best writers including: City Theatre National Short Play Competition winners. Summer Shorts is the most fun in 90 minutes anyone could have all summer. Each short play has lengths of at least two to 20 minutes. City Theatre is a notfor-profit professional theatre company, founded in 1996, dedicated to the creation of new plays and family theatre that entertains and enlightens. Over the eighteen years the company has produced almost 500 short plays, ranging from outrageous comedies to tender and insightful mini-dramas. Tracy loves music and loves to dance. Every day after school, she rushes home to watch the Corny Collins show on TV, to which she is addicted. She is fascinated with the shows hot Link Larkin. Suddenly one of the stars pulls out of the show, leaving an opening for a replacement. Auditions are held for 'Miss Teenage Hairspray" and with the help of her closest friend, Seaweed, Tracy auditions and is chosen for the show. She is a great hit and becomes successful and very popular, causing another contestant, Amber Von Tussle and her mother, Velma, the shows manager to be very unhappy and willing to do anything to have Tracy removed from the show, creating tremendous trouble for everyone. Tracy and her friends start a campaign to do whatever is necessary to make sure the show is fully integrated in the future, making sure all teenagers, black and white, dance together on nationwide television. When the owner of a women's clothing store, for large women, makes Tracy a model for his clothing, she involves her mother, Edna, also a large woman, played by a male actor dressed as a woman. For several months a group of mostly retired baby boomers have been meeting with city staff to develop plans for a volunteer group of boomers to use their experience and skills to help the unemployed and under-employed find career success. The Hollywood BEST program will include volunteer led job skills training classes and a career fair to help connect employees with those looking for employment or those wanting a more fulfilling job. Now the committee is seeking other boomers to join in the effort as volunteers to lead the job skills training classes and help organize the job fair. Hollywood’s Driftwood Community Completes Public Space Improvement Project perience to work helping those who need advice and training to move ahead in the workforce. All Hollywood BEST volunteers will take part in training to get ready for their roles as career coaches and instructors. These trained volunteers will then help with everything from interpersonal and professional skills to resume writing to interviewing and how-to negotiate a salary. With the help of a $30,000 City Challenge grant from the Community Foundation of Broward, the Hollywood BEST program is now officially getting started with its work. The City Challenge grant is part of the Community Foundation’s Re-engage for Good initiative, which connects the growing numbers of new retirees with high impact service opportunities to address local city challenges. In addition to volunteers, recruit-
ment is also underway for a part-time program coordinator who would operate under the City’s Department of Community and Economic Development. “The best way to engage residents, who often become disconnected from their community after retirement, is at a local civic level,” said Community Foundation of Broward Program Manager, Lindsey Linzer. “These grants give cities new ways for retired residents to give back to their communities in meaningful ways.” Hollywood is one of six
HOLLYWOOD – The Driftwood community recently completed a neighborhood beautification project funded by Public Space Improvement grant money they won in the City of Hollywood’s Great Neighborhoods Challenge. Driftwood created a certified wildlife habitat, recently recognized by the National Wildlife Federation, in two dry retention areas along Sheridan Street between North 65th Way and North 66th Terrace. In this highly visible area, Florida-native vegetation was planted to provide beautification along the corridor, educational opportunities for local schools, and a noise and visual buffer for nearby residents. The beautification project will also discourage illegal dumping. The City of Hollywood’s Great Neighborhoods Challenge was a city-wide contest to encourage property owners or tenants to beautify the exterior of their homes or businesses. Three neighborhoods in the City of Hollywood – Driftwood, Hollywood Hills and Playland Estates – were each awarded a $25,000 Public Space improvement grant for recruiting at least 25 property owners in their area to fix up their properties and develop an outstanding design to improve a public area in their neighborhood as part of the Public Space Design Challenge. Are your food and cooking choices accelerating the aging process?
(BPT) - When it comes to health, many people are aware of the major do's and don'ts of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet. However, people often focus on their cholesterol, blood pressure, and body mass index (BMI), and overlook another key medical marker: Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGEs). AGEs are harmful compounds in the body that accelerate the aging process and are linked to many of the top health concerns people face today. AGEs develop in the body or are ingested through certain foods, including browned, sugary and processed foods. When people consume too many of these foods, higher than normal levels of AGEs build up in their tissues. This accumulation accelerates the aging process from the inside out. Slowing the progression of AGEs is vital to living a long, healthy life. In an effort to educate the public about AGEs, the A.G.E. Foundation, a global not-forprofit organization, is unveiling the findings of its U.S. survey on the effect of eating habits and cooking methods on aging. The A.G.E. Foundation is dedicated to educating consumers about AGEs and how they can protect themselves. THE IMPACT OF EATING HABITS AND COOKING METHODS ON AGING Seventy-six percent of Americans know that eating and preparing processed food can accelerate aging, according to the survey. Thirty-two percent cited the manner in which they prepare food as having an impact on aging, while just 11 percent indicated cooking food at high temperatures affected aging. As temperatures warm up and outdoor cooking season begins, people will be heating up the grill with limited awareness of the way to reduce AGEs. The survey showed that six in 10 people prefer grilling their meat over oven-roasting (23 percent), stir-frying (9 percent), steaming (3 percent) and poaching (1 percent). "It is important for people to limit the amount of barbecued, sauteed or even toasted food," says Dr. Michelle Davenport, a board member with the A.G.E. Foundation. "We've found that the higher the temperature you cook something, the higher the AGE level - and excessive AGEs cause our bodies to age prematurely." The survey also showed that when people are eating processed, fried or sugary foods, 81 percent are more concerned with the impact on their weight compared with 58 percent who are more concerned about the effect on their internal organs. CONTROLLING YOUR AGES The key to lowering AGEs is to reduce heat, extend cooking time and incorporate more water and acid into your food preparation, according to the A.G.E. Foundation. Waterbased cooking methods (i.e., steaming, poaching) dramatically reduce AGEs. When queried about healthy ways to prepare meats for grilling, herb and oil ranked the highest (34 percent), followed by "straight to the grill" at 21 percent. Only 17 percent of respondents knew that adding an acid-based marinade was the best cooking method to reduce AGEs. "Adding a marinade in the form of lemon, lime or vinegar can cut AGEs by 50 percent," says Dr. Davenport. Avoiding foods high in AGEs and opting for brightly colored fruits and vegetables and whole grains, which are low in AGEs, is also recommended. Opt for foods that include iridoids, which are healthy elements produced in plants and found in certain fruits and vegetables like noni, blueberries, olive leaves and Cornelian cherries, as well as the supplemental beverage TruAge Max. We know that veggies provide nourishment, especially for growing children, but getting your kids to eat healthier can be a challenge. Luckily, there are plenty of creative ways to increase the amount of veggies in your kids' diets. Here are five tips to get the little ones in your life to eat - and even enjoy - their vegetables. SMOOTH OPERATOR Picky eaters might turn up their noses at the sight of leafy green vegetables, but they'll gladly accept a tasty, blended treat. Incorporate a variety of veggies, plus some fruit for sweetness, into a smoothie, and your kids will just taste the sweet fruit flavor. Throw a few broccoli florets and a handful of spinach, along with some green grapes, a bit of pear and avocado, plus water and pineapple juice, into a Vitamix 5200 to create a sweet green smoothie. The little ones will think they're enjoying a decadent treat, but they'll also be getting antioxidants, vitamins and other nutrients. SQUEEZE THE JUICE Most kids enjoy a nice glass or box of refreshing juice. Rather than giving them storebought juices, which could be loaded with sugar and missing essential nutrients, utilize a high-powered blender to make whole-food juices at home. Use carrots, pineapple and a little water to make a sweet yet healthy juice that contains antioxidants and fiber. With whole-food juices, you're able to keep the healthiest parts of the fruits and vegetables: the seeds, skin and pulp. Plus, you'll know exactly what your kids are drinking. SAUCE IT UP What kid doesn't love macaroni and cheese? Increase your children's veggie intake by making a homemade cheese sauce with healthy ingredients. Puree cauliflower, carrots or butternut squash, add them to your sauce and serve over whole-wheat macaroni noodles for a more nutritious version of this favorite dish. You can also make a fresh tomato sauce to serve over spaghetti squash
"noodles," a wholesome, gluten-free alternative to traditional pasta. To make the "noodles," simply halve and seed the squash, then bake in a dish with one-half cup of water at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. When the squash is cooked, use a fork to scrape the flesh, which creates the "noodles." "SOUPER" HEALTHY Another great way to get more veggies into your kids' diets is to add them to a soup. Many kids would rather not eat plain broccoli, so try a low-fat cheesy vegetable soup that incorporates this essential ingredient. All you need is broccoli or cauliflower, low-fat milk, lowfat cheese and some spices to make a nutritious, satisfying soup. Your kids will love the cheesy taste - and you'll love that they're eating more vegetables. SWEET TREATS A frozen treat is a satisfying way to end a meal. Create an avocado sorbet using soymilk and a touch of sugar, or make a spinach-lime sorbet with fruit juice for sweetness. You can make the sorbet ahead of time and let it freeze, or use frozen fruits and vegetables to whip up a quick treat in a high-powered blender. Your kids will enjoy their dessert, and you'll enjoy knowing it's full of healthy veggies. You may have to be creative to get your children to eat the recommended three to five servings of vegetables each day, but there are many ways to introduce them to new flavors. Try some of these ideas, and your kids will be getting the nutrition they need. Also, when it comes to eating your veggies, be sure to lead by example. NORTH MIAMI BEACH The most common cause of heel pain here in the United States is a condition called plantar fasciitis. Athletes are affected, as well as soldiers, sales people on their feet over long periods of time and those who are overweight. It can affect one foot or both.
What is plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fascia is the flat band of ligament that connects our heel bones to our toes. The plantar fasciia supports the arches of our feet. If it becomes strained by walking, running or standing for long periods of time, especially on hard surfaces, it can become weak, swollen and irritated, resulting in severe heel pain. People with flat feet or high arches are prone to this condition. Pronation (rolling of the feet inward when walking) is also a predictor of plantar fasciitis. Those with tight Achilles tendons or calf muscles are at risk for this, as well as people who are overweight, or wear shoes that don’t fit well or are worn out. Pain is usually felt in the heel and foot with the first step out of bed in the morning or after sitting for a long period of time. It is also likely to be felt after standing for a long period of time or when climbing stairs.
How is plantar fasciitis diagnosed?
After an indepth assessment of your medical history that would include past injuries and illnesses as well as current conditions under treatment, your podiatrist will assess how you stand and walk, where the pain is, what time of day you experience the most pain, and your level of physical activity. He or she may even xray your foot to rule out a stress fracture.
Treatment
Treatment for plantar fasciitis begins with getting off your feet or cutting back on activities that are associated with the pain. NSAIDS like Advil or other anti-inflammatories such as Tylenol or Aspirin may be prescribed to reduce the painful inflammation, or ice applications may help. We may prescribe toe and calf stretches with a towel several times a day. Shoes with a good arch support and/or cushioned soles are definitely recommended. If pain continues after these conservative approaches are employed, splints may be customized for the patient, and in extreme conditions where pain continues for more than six months, surgery may be recommended. A visit to your podiatrist after several weeks of pain would definitely be in order to alleviate your discomfort and avoid long-term damage. Don’t delay. Early intervention can save you a lot of pain.

CELEBRATE AMERICA The City of Hallandale Beach will Celebrate America from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at South Beach Park, with a beach party in advance of American’s birthday. Annually, the City honors America on the Saturday before the Fourth of July. The free event will include music, games, a bounce house and numerous activities for adults and children. The Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League (PAL) will provide the food concessions. Also, during the beach party, parking fees will be waived at South Beach Park, located in the 1800 block of South Ocean Drive, and in the North Beach Park parking garage, located on East Hallandale Beach Boulevard at South Ocean Drive. The top landscaped properties within the City of Hallandale Beach were recognized recently at the annual Beautification Awards Ceremony at City Hall. Each property owner, or representative, was presented with a plaque and shirt during the event. Residents don’t call and nominate a property; the beauty is spotted by the board members. “We look at how it’s kept up; the trees, flowers and all of this,” said Mrs. Bruccone. “We always go out in May because the summer is too hot, and often, plants die in the heat.” At the annual awards, Jennifer Smith’s house at 316 NW 5th Terrace caught the eyes of the board members. Her home was selected at the best overall residence in the City. Gold awards were also presented to one residence in each quadrant. The Olympus Condominium won best for multifamily residences, and Gulfstream Park was selected as the best commercial property. Awards were handed out for the best properties, with several others being named honorable mention. Hallandale Beach City Commissioners presented plaques to the property owners. The best single-family home property owners were presented with metal signs to display in the front yards.
City Commission meeting schedule changes for the summer The Hallandale Beach City Commission is on summer break in July. The regular City Commission meetings on the first and third Wednesdays have canceled. The Mayor and City Commission will be back at 4 p.m., Monday, July 29, and 4 p.m., Tuesday, July 30, for budget workshop sessions in the City Commission Chambers. Commissioners, sitting as the Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency Board of Directors, will meet at 4 p.m., Wednesday, July 31, to discuss the budget. Regular City Commission meetings resume in August.

Soak the bamboo skewers in water for 20 minutes. Combine the sugar, soy sauce, cider vinegar, water, ginger, chili sauce and garlic. Thread the chicken strips onto the bamboo skewers. Heat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Brush the chicken skewers with the oil and place on the grill. Brush a few times with the marinade. Turn after 4 minutes. Brush with the remaining marinade, and grill until just cooked through, about 8 minutes. * End your dinner on a high note by offering your guests something simple and sweet for dessert.
