Over the past few years, Winn Dixie Supermarkets throughout Florida, and the southeastern United States, have been fighting an uphill battle. At a time where the Wal-Marts and Targets have joined the hoards of grocery outlets that consumers have to choose from, it has been very tough for the company to hold onto its many stores, which have indeed been part of the landscape for generations. While many chains have closed up through the years, leaving behind only memories, there have been too many people who have worked too hard to keep Winn Dixie in the spotlight. To be honest, it was something that was not a priority going in. I was wrong. What District Manager Robin Castillo and Store Director Lavar Miller have done is bring the community feel back to shopping. From the moment you walk into the store, you are bowled over by how fresh and clean everything looks. Vegetables are colorful and bright, the prepared foods from Chef Jacqueline are not what you find in any Winn Dixie location - let alone most any grocery store. There is also a butcher and knowledgeable seafood specialist on hand to help your chopping experience as well. "Fresh is the key in this store," said Castillo. "Fresh meats, seafoods, and organic produce. In fact, we have organic items throughout the store. We want this to be a shopping experience and not something you have to do." Indeed, this is not your typical every day grocery store. You can sense that huge difference when you walk in the door and are immediately hit with clear views of the entire facility. What Winn Dixie did was listen to its customers. Even with all the options that any consumer has these days with a grocery location on nearly every corner - this is a company that took all the ideas and started to make them a reality. That is something that rarely happens. PREPARED FOODS AND CHICKEN WINGS Fresh, affordable prepared foods such as salmon, beef stew, meatloaf and fresh vegetables, and enticing sides like macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes. Pizza? They have them freshly made-the-wayyou-want. Hot sliced turkey, ham and roast beef at the Carving Station. How about chicken wings? They have it all. "Our chicken wing bar has already been a hit," Castillo smiled. "You can come in here and fill up a bucket of several flavors with sauces. You cannot get that anywhere else." EXPANDED KOSHER SELECTION One of the biggest additions to the store is the expanded Kosher Section. This part of the store easily rivals local markets with fresh meats, poultry and fish as well as a complete selection of canned and boxed favorites as well. "That is one of the upgrades that many of our customers have been asking about," Castillo explained. "What all of us have learned is to give the shoppers what they ask for. I think we've done that." ‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’ The transition is on for new City Manager Renee Crichton HALLANDALE BEACH - As of June 1st the transition period for our new City Manager began. Renee Crichton formerly from Miami Gardens has started to work side by side with City Manager Mark Antonio. This arrangement was agreed to by the City Commission to provide the ability for Renee to get to know Staff and our city departments. During our last Commission meeting Ms. Crichton actually stepped in for Mark during the afternoon portion of the meeting. After a daylong interview process the City Manager selection was narrowed down to the top ranked candidates. Renee ranked top on the list; receiving support from Commissioners Ross and Lewy, Vice Mayor Sanders and myself. The second ranked candidate was Alvin Jackson, the current CRA Director. The final vote for Renee was adopted on a 5-0 vote. From the beginning, the majority of the Commission knew that she had the best background experience and philosophy that matched perfectly with our community. Renee helped to establish the City of Miami Gardens. She shared the fact that she knows city functions from the ground up which gives her the ability to tackle issues by systematically deconstructing them to the foundation and solving them. She helped establish many departments; including their police, building services, finance and many of the other support functions. She was their lead in developing the budget before it was given to the City Manager. She has previously led Union negotiations and worked directly with other agencies. Not only has Renee had the city experience needed to fill the City Manager position, she also understands how to work in a city that has large attractions. The biggest benefit was her direct experience working with Calder Racetrack and gaming issues. She has also has experience in development and community redevelopment. She has said that it is like coming home to her since her career started in Hallandale under the leadership of RJ Intindola in our Development Services Department. This past week Manager Crichton has already been put to test. She has been following through on negotiations with the Beachwalk Project along with City Attorney Whitefield and Staff. The Beachwalk Project ordinances on the Planned Development Overlay District and the ordinance on the vacation of old 26th avenue was passed on first reading unanimously with the understanding specific issues and areas of concern must be addressed and ne-

The development agreement, allocation of flex units and major development application were all deferred. The Beachwalk application is for a mixed use, 31 story, 305 foot condo/hotel with a 1225 square foot restaurant and 5 story parking garage. It consists of 84 residences that cannot be utilized year round and limited to 120 day use by the owner. The hotel consists of 216 suites with 432 keys. This means that a unit

Part of the development hinges on a lease agreement of the North Beach Park concessions. The developer has proposed building all the North Beach Park improvements with the rights to lease the restaurant and share revenue with a minimum 60,000 dollar guaranteed to the City. It should be noted the existing land use provides that the developer could build a 350 foot hotel and parking to meet existing codes without approval of the Commission. Due to the fact they would like to add residential units and combine the two parcels by utilizing the right of way on old 26th they need Commission approval.
While the majority of individuals supported the project there were many valid concerns raised over the impact of traffic and parking on Diana Drive. The parking that is proposed is based on a formula for condo/hotels which has not been utilized in our City, but has been applied in other tourist destinations; Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and Coral Springs. It provides for full valet tandem parking. These cities have adopted ordinances utilizing parking ratios based on occupancy levels. Our city has not adopted a new category for this use. Currently parking for a hotel is one spot per room. Condo/hotel is a lesser percent based on an 80% occupancy level. Staff was
directed to continue to work with the developer on an agreement that includes monitoring and lock out mechanisms if parking is found to be insufficient. Diana Drive access and utilization has been on the top of the list of issues. The developer originally offered to pay to reconstruct the road according to our Parking Committee’s recommendation that would add over 70 on-street spots. The residents were opposed to the plan. Currently the developer offered to make a contribution of $250,000 toward whatever improvements are agreed upon between the city and residents. Staff is negotiating an alternative to traffic flow and parking monitoring. This meeting can be

Broward Center brings South Florida’s Pride Wind Ensemble to the Amaturo Theatre The South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble presents this concert commemorating twenty six years of outstanding concerts with “The Music of Our Lives” on June 16, 2012 at 8 p.m. for a one night only, top notch performance. Using special lighting effects, videos and guest artists, the ensemble will perform songs featuring audience favorites, including hits by: Billy Joel “Root Beer Rag,” Queen’s: “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the theme from: “Super Mario Brothers, “Flight of the Bumble Bee,” and other chart-toppers, as well as: music of current pop stars such as: Lady Gaga, to name a few. The ensemble is South Florida’s premier LGBTS band. All under the direction of Daniel Bassett, Artistic Conductor. While the band has definitely grown and changed throughout the years, one thing remains constant. Their primary function is to entertain audiences in South Florida and support the community through their various performances. Flag Day is another way to salute the military By Dan Adkins With the recent Memorial Day holiday, I realized that all of us could do more to salute the men and women of the military with every opportunity to say “thank you” for their service. It also seems that the United States flag should be flown during both Flag Day and the Fourth of July holiday. I would like to personally encourage all Americans to display our flag prominently over the next few weeks to help restore pride in our country. Flag Day is Thursday, June 14th and on this date the United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday. Our United States flag conveys past history and future goals. As citizens, we have the opportunity to advocate for harmony among all residents and we will become stronger upon recognizing our history, including Flag Day. Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s Second Two-Week Session of Young Actors/Young Artists Begins Monday, June 25 HOLLYWOOD - The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood begins the second two-week session of the summer camp, “Young Actors and Young Artists” on Monday, June 25. During this program, children between the ages of 6 to 12 years old will gain performing and art-making skills. This session concludes on July 6, and camp will be closed for the July 4 holiday. Parents have the option of enrolling their children into either half-day or full-day sessions. From 9 a.m. to noon, the “Young Actors” will participate in storytelling, movement, drama improvisation, music, costume and set design, and more. Between 1 and 4 p.m., the “Young Artists” will explore drawing, painting, clay, mixed media, and more. At the end of each session, family and friends will enjoy a presentation and exhibition. All classes are taught at the Center’s Arts School, located at 1626 Harrison St., Hollywood. Expert Q&A: Wear and Tear or Osteoarthritis of the Knee (ARA) - More than 10 million Americans begin their day with their usual routine, only to discover the spring in their step has been replaced by a creak in their knees. "Wear and tear" disease or osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is the most common form of arthritis and can be life-changing. The associated pain and stiffness decreases an individual's ability to carry out routine dayto-day activities, such as climbing stairs or standing for a long period of time. It is estimated that women older than 50 years of age are more likely to develop OA of the knee than men.i Jeffrey E. Rosen, M.D., a leading osteoarthritis expert and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation at New York Hospital Queens, shares expert insights and advice that all osteoarthritis of the knee sufferers should know, including ways to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle and common disease

Often referred to as "wear and tear," osteoarthritis is a chronic disease in which the cartilage, or cushioning tissue between the surfaces of joints, wears away. When cartilage surrounding the joint breaks down, the joint has to bear more weight; this transmits across the joint possibly leading to changes in the underlying bone. What are some common misconceptions about osteoarthritis of the knee? Osteoarthritis is often confused with osteoporosis, which is a disease that affects the makeup of the bone, as opposed to the joints and cartilage surrounding the bone. Another common misconception is that osteoarthritis of the knee only affects older people. Who is at risk of developing osteoarthritis? There are certain fac-
tors that can increase a person's risk including weight, age, gender and injury or trauma to the knee joint. Those who have had repeated trauma to the knee joints, also referred to as "microtraumas," are at higher risk, and women are affected more than men. Approximately 60 percent of the nearly 27 million people affected by osteoarthritis of the knee are women.ii What are the symptoms? How can you tell it may be time to see your doctor? General osteoarthritis of the knee symptoms include stiffness, particularly when getting up in the morning, aching in the joints and pain while walking up and down stairs. Patients will normally use over-the-counter medications to treat the symptoms. However, if symptoms progress over time or you start to feel a "crunching" sensation from inside the joint, this may be a sign that it is time to schedule an appointment with your doctor.
Summer Biters Are Out for Blood (NewsUSA) - They want to suck your blood! We aren't talking about the characters from those popular vampire movies, but rather summer's pesky mosquitoes. It's not only time for backyard barbecues and afternoons by the pool, but it is also the season that brings us 200 species of biting, buzzing, bothersome mosquitoes. Dr. Jorge Parada, spokesperson for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), cautions that mosquitoes are not just a nuisance pest. "Mosquitoes in every region of the country transmit disease-causing pathogens that can trigger a range of symptoms and illnesses. In the United States, West Nile virus and allergic reactions are some of the more frequent concerns." According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were more than 1,000 reported cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in the United States in 2010 (the latest year for which data are available). To minimize your family's risk of mosquito-borne illnesses, there are certain precautions that should be taken. NPMA recommends the following steps: * Wear insect repellant when outdoors. Products containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus have proven to be safe and effective. (Parents should consult with their pediatrician for repellent recommendations.) * If you will be outdoors for long periods where heavy mosquito activity is predicted, consider wearing clothing treated with permethrin. * Eliminate sources of standing water around your home, including flower pots, clogged gutters and grill covers. Take proactive measures by drilling holes in the bottom of recycling bins, and replacing water in birdbaths weekly. * Inspect window/door screens for holes, and repair any tears to minimize chances for entry into the home. * If bitten, clean the area thoroughly with soap and water. Avoid scratching the bite area and apply anti-itch cream if necessary. Some homeowners feel a sense of security by using citronella candles, but it's worth noting that while they may minimize the mosquito population in a targeted area, they will not eliminate the insects nor prevent them from biting.
Also, consult your doctor when pain, stiffness or swelling becomes too persistent or starts to affect your stability when standing. Another sure sign to seek medical attention is when symptoms cannot be alleviated with an anti-inflammatory or an over-thecounter medication, such as acetaminophen. The key to a better outcome is seeking support early and before the problem progresses too far. How is osteoarthritis knee pain treated? Traditionally, physicians have approached treating osteoarthritis in a stepwise fashion, beginning with improving diet as well as a modified exercise program, then moving towards pharmacological intervention as needed. However, now physicians are starting to try different treatment approaches to help get the best result possible for patients as quickly as possible. My preference is to use multimodal strategies
where I can combine treatments and therapy strategies. I tell my patients the importance of being informed. Ask your doctor about ways to
maintain proper body weight and an exercise program that is appropriate for you. It is also important to keep an open dialogue with your doctor about worsening symptoms so treatment can be adjusted as necessary. What are three things you would recommend someone diagnosed with osteoarthritis knee pain to keep in mind? 1. Maintain a healthy body weight. It is essential to maintain a healthy body weight. In fact, every 10 pounds, either lost or gained, is magnified by four times depending on the physical activity being done by the individual. 2. Stay active and exercise. Keep up an active lifestyle and make sure this includes a stretching and exercise program. A common misstep is to focus on cardiovascular training only or weight training only, whereas a combination of the two is ideal. Stronger muscles can act like shock absorbers to joints, so a strength training program is beneficial. 3. Educate yourself about your disease. Finally, it is imperative to be educated about your condition and aware of the contributing factors so you know when it is the right time to see your doctor. HURRICANE FORUM Cultural Community Center hosts annual event to get residents prepared for the next six months More than 150 residents learned how to prepare a hurricane evacuation plan Tuesday night at the annual City of Hallandale Beach Hurricane preparedness Forum at the Cultural Community Center. Experts from the City, County, federal government and utility company were on hand to discuss hurricane evacuation and plans with residents. Chuck Lanza, Broward County Emergency Management Director, and Dan Gregoria, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service, explained the need to be prepared no matter what the season may bring. Saluting the Police Athletic League (PAL) track and field champions
Members of the Police Athletic League (PAL) of Hallandale Beach brought home the hardware in the Florida Track and Field Championships recently. Demonstrating superiority, each member of the 32member team brought home at least one medal. Combined, the team collected 27 gold, 17 silver and 16 bronze medals en route to scoring 288 points in the competition. The performance avenged last year’s second-place finish to the Jacksonville PAL. Jacksonville PAL finished second this year with 245 points. The Lakeland PAL was a distant third at 222 points. To ready the community, Hallandale Beach Fire-Rescue members prepared emergency kits to show residents what they need to be prepared for a disaster; including, but not limited to, flashlights, batteries, water and an emergency contact plan. Chief Dan Sullivan stressed the need to have a plan if you evacuate. He told residents to be sure a family member or friend out of harm’s way is aware of the evacuation. All family members should contact that person to ensure everyone is safe. Hallandale Beach and Broward County haven’t
been impacted by a hurricane since Hurricane Wilma in October 2005. Several storms have skirted the coast in recent years, but South Florida has been fortunate. The experts predict that can’t last forever. When Hurricane Wilma left her mark, many areas were without power for weeks. Dan Vargas, FPL project manager, explained the utility company has contingency plans in place to have crews on the road as soon as a storm passes. However, emergency services, such as hospitals, police stations and other critical-care and essential communi-
cations services take priority. Being prepared is essential. Everyone needs to be self-sufficient for up to 72 hours. Stock at least one gallon of water per person per day for a minimum of three days to ride out the storm and the aftermath. Now is the time to stock your shelves with non-perishable foods. If you have pets, get extra for them as well. If you ride out a storm in a high-rise building, remember, emergency services may not be able to reach you for several days after a storm. Being prepared is the key to survival, they all told the gathering.

MARINATED BEEF ROAST CHILLED 'FRIED' CHICKEN PEACHY PORK ROAST BARBECUE 3-6 lb boneless pork loin, rib, leg, or shoulder roast 1 can sliced peaches, packed in light syrup 1/2 sup brown sugar 3 tbsp chili sauce 2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tsp. each ground ginger, salt 1/2 tsp. ground pepper Place pork roast in a plastic bag. Reserve a few peach slices for garnish. In a blender, combine remaining ingredients, blend until smooth. Refrigerate half of the mixture and pour remaining half over the pork roast. Seal bag and refrigerate overnight, turning bag over several

times. Preheat barbecue to medium low. Place pork roast on grill over a drip pan or skewer for rotisserie. Barbecue, basting often with the marinade, approximately 25 minutes per pound (50 minutes per kilogram). Let stand 10 minutes before carving. Add the "Kitchen Bouquet". Marinate roast for up to 3 days, turning in marinade occasionally. BBQ; basting every 30 minutes. Set 10-20 minutes wrapped in foil before serving. BOURBON STEAK 2 tablespoons yellow onion, diced 1/2 cup bourbon 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup lemon juice 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped garlic (about 2 cloves) 4 (10 ounce) New York strip steaks Mix onion, bourbon, soy sauce, brown sugar, lemon juice and garlic in a small bowl. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Place steaks in a shallow dish large enough for them to be in a single layer. Pour marinade over steaks. Cover and refrigerate for 4 to 8 hours. You may turn steaks occasionally. Remove steaks and discard marinade. Grill to desired doneness. Makes 4 steaks. BARBEQUED PROVENCAL ROAST OF BEEF 1/3 cup Red wine vinegar 2 tbsp. Each chopped fresh thyme &
rosemary or 2 tsp.. each dried 2 Tbsp. Olive oil 1/2 tsp. Pepper 2 Cloves garlic, crushed 1 Sirloin tip or rump roast (or used cross rib) 3 lb.. 1 Bay leaf 1 Strip orange rind, 2 inches long Whisk together first 5 ingredients. Pour into large plastic bag. Add beef, bay leaf and orange rind. Coat beef well. Seal bag and refrigerate, turning occasionally, for at least 12 hours or up to 24 hours. Discard marinade; place meat on greased grill over medium-high heat; close lid and cook, turning to brown all sides, for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to medium; cook for about 1 hour longer or until meat thermometer registers 140°F for rare or 150°F for medium-rare. Transfer to cutting board and tent with foil; let stand for 10 minutes before carving. Add shrimp and tomato. Cook 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add beer and stir. Cook until shrimp turn pink and opaque (about 1 minute longer). Serve over hot white rice.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 2quart casserole dish. Mix soup, pepper, salt and milk together. In the prepared casserole dish, place half of the potatoes in a layer, then half of the onions. Pour half of soup mixture over potatoes and onions. Repeat layers with the remaining potatoes, onions and soup. Sprinkle grated cheese on top. Bake uncovered for about 1-1/2 hours.
BAKED BEANS 1/2 lb. bacon 1 c. finely chopped celery 3 c. finely chopped onion 3 lb. ground beef 2 cloves garlic minced 2 can baked beans 29 oz. ea. 1 1/2 c. catsup 3 Tbsp. prepared mustard 2 beef bouillon cubes 2/3 c. boiling water salt & pepper to taste
FUDGE PIE Makes one 9-inch pie Chocolate lovers will crave this sinfully delicious pie! This recipe was given to me so many, many years ago that the donor is unknown.
Fry bacon slices in skillet. When crisp remove from pan. In drippings sauté celery and onion. Set aside. Drain excess grease. Cook ground beef with 2 cloves garlic, until meat is brown. Drain grease. combine 2 cans baked beans (like B$M) and the onion and celery and ground beef with catsup and mustard and salt and pepper to taste and 2 beef bouillon cubes dissolved in the boiling water. Add bacon, crumbled. Bake 1 hour and 15 min at 375. Can be made ahead and baked at the last minute.
Nutty Crust 1/4 cup ( 1/2 stick) margarine, at room temperature 1/4 cup sugar 1 tablespoon flour 1 cup chopped pecans, walnuts or almonds Mix margarine, sugar, flour and nuts until well blended. Press over bottom and sides of 9-inch pie pan. Fudge Filling 1/2 cup (1 stick) margarine 1 cup sugar 3 eggs 2 (1 ounce each) squares unsweetened baking chocolate,

melted and cooled 1/2 cup flour 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/8 teaspoon salt

Topping: 1 pint frozen vanilla ice milk or ice cream Preheat oven to 325 degrees. With electric mixer, beat margarine, sugar, eggs, chocolate, flour, vanilla, baking powder and salt until well blended and smooth. Pour chocolate mixture into prepared crust. Bake for 35 minutes until set. Let cool for 10 to 20 minutes before serving. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice milk on top.
FRESH STRAWBERRY PIE Makes two nine-inch pie During the fresh strawberry season, this pie will be especially delicious. The texture is light, creamy and brings out that fresh strawberry taste!
PECAN PIE Makes two 9-inch pies A Southern specialty! When pecans are plentiful, bake several and freeze them for later. 1/2 cup (1 stick) margarine, melted 1 (16 ounce) box light brown sugar (2-1/4 cups) 2 tablespoons corn meal 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 eggs, beaten 2 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon vanilla 2 cups chopped pecans 2 nine-inch unbaked pie shells Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large mixing bowl, beat margarine, brown sugar, corn meal, salt, and eggs until creamy. Add water and vanilla. Beat until mixed. Stir in pecans. Pour half of filling into each pie shell. Bake for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 300 degrees and bake and ad-
2 nine-inch pie shells, baked and cooled 1 (4 ounce) package vanilla pudding and pie filling (not instant) 1 (3 ounce) package strawberry or wild strawberry gelatin 1-3/4 cups water 1 teaspoon lemon juice 8 ounces prepared nondairy whipped cream topping 2-1/2 to 3 cup sliced fresh strawberries Combine pudding mix, gelatin, water and lemon juice. Stir and heat over medium heat until the mixture comes to a boil, and boil 30 seconds, stirring constantly. Pour into a bowl and chill in refrigerator for about 2 hours. Fold in 1-1/2 cups whipped cream topping and blend well. Stir 2-1/2 cups strawberries into the mixture. Pour strawberry mixture into prepared pie shells. Chill 1 to 2 hours until set. Spread remaining whipped cream topping in a thin layer on each pie. Decorate topping layer with remaining sliced strawberries. Refrigerate. Cut into wedges. Serve cold.
