One of Albert Einstein’s many aphorisms, “three great forces rule the world: stupidity, fear and greed,” is particularly apt in the COVID-19 Era. Our government’s duty is to warn the public of a possible Pandemic and recommend precautions. However, the initial COVID-19 tactic, was to strike fear into our hearts and minds. The constant display of COVID19 “cases” on the nightly news, suggested certain death awaited those who ventured out of their homes. During the Diamond Princess Cruiseship’s outbreak in early February of 2020, we had a real world demonstration of the behavior of the SARS-CoV-2 Virus. Trapped in a floating Petri dish, the crew performed their duties and passengers were quarantined in their rooms with a ventilation system without spe-
cial high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, only 17 percent of the 3,711 occupants became infected with SARS-CoV-2, only half of whom had symptoms. Because 80 percent of those infected, were in cabins that didn’t have a previous confirmed case, the likely mode of infection was transmission of aerosols (in contrast to large droplets that quickly fall to the ground) through the ventilation system and locking the people in, had proved to be counterproductive. We also learned from the Diamond Princess episode, that the median age of symptomatic folks were people 68 years old, 50 percent of whom had underlying medical conditions and the deaths were in those over 70 years of age. Bone Voyage: International Travel With Pets As summer approaches and the promise of widespread COVID-19 vaccination becomes more hopeful, those with cabin fever may be planning exciting vacations abroad after spending the past year in their homes. If pet parents are considering a vacation overseas and intend to bring their animal, they should plan for their furry friend far in advance and do ample research, according to Dr. Christine Rutter,
a clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. “Travel outside of the continental U.S. has specific rules, certifications, and, potentially, vaccination requirements,” Rutter said. “Some international travel requires preparation up to six
months in advance and/or a quarantine period. Each country is different, so it will require some leg-work on the part of your certifying veterinarian to make sure you are in compliance.” Pet owners should visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture – Animal and Plant Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) website to review country-specific requirements for pet travel. Their pet resource page may help to answer many owner questions. Most countries require that your pet be checked by a federally accredited veterinarian and that a United States Interstate and International Certificate for Health Examination for Small Animals (7001 USDAAPHIS Form) be issued by that veterinarian and endorsed by the USDA. Before considering traveling with a pet, owners should consult their veterinary practice and see if any veterinarians there have experience providing documentation for international travel. It is also important to check with your local USDA Service Center to ensure that your veterinarian is USDA accredited. If they are not endorsed by the USDA, the paperwork they provide will not be valid. The timetable for examination statements and certifications can
be very tight, so owners should plan well in advance and ask questions of the relevant authorities to be sure all required paperwork is complete in time for your trip. In addition to submitting required paperwork to the relevant agencies, owners may also want to keep paper copies of this documentation on-hand during their travel. “Have a digital or hard copy of your pet’s vaccination history (including rabies certificate), microchip number, medications, and health records, if they have chronic illnesses or have had major surgeries,” Rutter said. “Ask your veterinarian what records she/he recommends you take with you in case your family vet’s office is closed (if they are needed while you’re abroad).” You may also need to get your pet a rabies vaccine booster and/or have rabies antibody titers checked prior to traveling to a country considered to be high-risk for rabies. Although the U.S. recognizes three-year rabies vaccinations, some countries require annual rabies immunization. Foreign nations may also require a quarantine period after your arrival. It’s best to check with the local government prior to your arrival to avoid any unwanted surprises. For a long international flight, it’s also a good idea to have your veterinarian perform a check-up
to confirm your pet is healthy enough to fly, and while there, you may consider asking about medication that may help your furry friend during the stress of travel. “If your pet struggles with anxiety or motion sickness, ask your veterinarian how to best manage your pet’s needs during travel,” Rutter said. “This is probably a needed conversation if your pet has never traveled before or if your pet has fireworks phobia.” Owners should also research the different facilities they will be stopping at on their journey to see what amenities are offered for pets, especially in terms of their bathroom needs. “Most airports have a ‘pet relief’ area, and many have one in the air-side terminal. Do a little cyber-sleuthing or ask an airline representative where to find it. Nervous bladders may need to ‘go’ a bit more often, and a walk is good to settle the mind,” Rutter said. “Be sure your pet wears a collar or harness with a tag at all times while traveling in case of escapes. Outside of their normal environments, pets can become fearful or excited and bolt.” Rutter also recommends having pet necessities on-hand for the duration of your travel. “Carry waste bags, water, time-sensitive medications, and at least a small portion of your pet’s food on hand,” she said. “I also carry a cheap set of medical
exam gloves (purchased over the counter) in case things get messy.” It is also important to ensure that the appropriate arrangements have been made to accommodate your pet. Confirm with your lodging that animals are allowed, research nearby veterinary care facilities you can contact in case your pet has an emergency while on your trip, and have a plan for either bringing needed pet supplies with you or confirming that nearby stores carry the essentials your pet needs. “If you have activities planned during your trip, can your pet go with you or stay at your lodging location unattended? Many hotels and rentals will allow your pets to stay with you but do not allow pets to stay unattended while you are away,” Rutter said. It may also be beneficial to research the local cultural attitudes surrounding pets. Some countries may be more lenient about allowing pets in public areas than others. Taking a pet abroad is a considerable endeavor, and it’s important to do ample research and plan in advance to avoid unwanted surprises and ensure your animal’s well-being. With the help of an experienced veterinarian and the right preparations, owners can determine the best option for their pet as they embark on their next adventure.

They mix learning and fun in exactly the ways our kids need it, in this most unusual time. In addition to help with academics, they give students the chance to learn new skills: Creating Web-sites, Computer Coding, Making Videos, Planting, Maintaining Community Gardens, Learning Photography, Building Robots and so much more. They make sure students have plenty of time to run around and be kids – playing individual and team sports, splashing in swimming pools, shooting baskets or playing volleyball. They connect children with community organizations for service pro-
jects, take them to visit local businesses, science centers, libraries, museums, colleges, parks and more. Our summer learning program at the City of Hallandale Beach After School Tutorial and Enrichment Program will include project-based learning, activities in science, technology, engineering, the arts, mathematics (STEAM), cultural and performing arts activities, swimming lessons and field trips. We have 180 students enrolled and are staffed with seven certified teachers, seven teacher assistants, five teacher aides and seven summer youth aides. Even under normal circumstances – Pre-Pandemic, that is – research has shown, that students in after school and sum-
mer learning programs get better grades, are more excited about learning and participate more, in school. That’s not just because of the specific information they learn in summer and after school programs, but because of the skills they build, including teamwork and problem-solving, for example. In recent years, one significant reason that many children did not participate in summer programs, was that there weren’t programs to be found. The American Rescue Plan provides significant funding to states that can be used to support summer learning programs. As a result, school districts and state education agencies can support summer learning programs, after school programs that will supple-
ment classroom education, serving more kids, in more places, for longer periods of time and by using the best evidence-based, practices. It’s been a hard year for everyone and we’ve got a lot of ground to make up. We’ll need every player in our children’s learning ecosystem – schools, summer learning programs, youth-serving organizations, parents and families – to play a part in the recovery process. New resources make that possible, thank goodness and now, we need to make sure that we bring everyone to the table! The holiday weekend that was almost back to normal. My family and I, usually stay put on Memorial Day, it has always been a family tradition for years, a visit to place flags at loved one’s graves and then, a family BBQ. When we moved to Florida 30 years ago after the City Ceremony, my family would be front and center at my house. I always called my Dad and thanked him for his service to our Country. This weekend, I missed him and the chats that we would have about WWII and I wonder what that conversation would be like, if, he was still with us. My Dad served in over 40 plus missions in the War, he did not talk about it until he got older, as it was very hard for him. I am sure that it is the same way for many men and women. When my Uncle, Jim Ventura, came home, he was in and out of the hospital with depression and he was never the same. My sister in-law’s brother, came home and he was ravaged mentally by
Vietnam and sadly, he committed suicide. Today, we have many solders that are back, but still have the mental scares of losing their buddies on the battlefields! It’s sad when our history is forgotten and worse, it is not taught in our classrooms. In these wars, we join forces with other countries to fight tyranny, warlords, ethnic cleansing and human genocide! There is evil in our World and we as a powerful Nation, cannot and should not, sit by and let it take hold. “The only thing for necessary for the triumph of Evil to prevail, is for good people, men and women, to do nothing!” My Dad never supported the Vietnam War and spoke against Afghanistan’s involvement, saying that both were never going to be won and he would be glad,

He would also speak up for the protection of Israel, he saw what the Nazi’s did and understood the various Bedouins and other tribes in the Middle East, he actually shared, that they were warned about being captured, during World War II training. While I also believe in my heart, he would be alarmed at what is taking place in our Country now, he did live through many years of riots and protests, we used to talk about guns, he never owned one and he did not want them, in our home. My brother used to commute to NYC and he had a license to carry, however, my parents insisted that it was put away in a lock box when he was at home, my mother and father always
believed in a good education and worked hard to make sure that we had a good foundation. After this weekend and the continued senseless shootings, it is evident, in my opinion, guns and lack of education have finally caught up with our country. I am going to sound like my Dad, but there is simply a lack of work ethic and our children are no longer being taught job preparation skills, the schools are constantly failing children that are not cut out to go to college and I know, that there magnet programs that give students a glimpse into professions, but, there is a lack of trade schools. Broward County School District only has Sheridan Technical College and Technical High School with three cam-
puses, the main and largest one, is located on Sheridan Street, there is only one for automotive in Pembroke Pines, that also teaches commercial driving, the other is in Fort Lauderdale, that one, is more like a magnet program. Sheridan Technical Vocational School, boosts on-line classes in technical fields, these are the only free schools for students under the age of 18, the rest of them are all High Schools or have charges. Economical stability and jobs, are intertwined with a successful community. If we cannot address guns and the lack of education, when it comes to preparing our students for jobs, we will continue to see more gang related shootings and we will also continue to see, the rise in social unrest!
Let us remember, that many soldiers had given the ultimate sacrifice! Let us teach our children what they fought for! FREEDOM! Let all of us work together to make sure opportunities are available to all, on a level playing field. 4 Steps to Grief Recovery By Tracy Renee Lee
While the first key to recovery is to decide to recover, the second key to recovery is to discover your purpose in life. Without a purpose in life, it is impossible to recover to an acceptable standard of comfort. You must have a purpose, a direction on which to focus your heart, mind and efforts on. Without such a purpose, your mind will dwell on the pain of your loss and soon, you will drown in anguish. Your will alone will not bring total recovery. You must merge it with your mind’s ability to intellectually discern your purpose; your heart’s desire to serve, love, accomplish that purpose; and your efforts to achieve your purposeful goals. With profound purpose, your soul will redirect your energies toward its accomplishment and the by-product will be grief recovery. Earlier, I mentioned the two keys to recovery, but you will need a pathway to accomplish them. This article shall attempt to present that pathway in a four-
step program to help you accomplish your recovery goal. Let’s get down to business. Step 1 Immerse: The first step in accomplishing your recovery goal is to immerse yourself in it. You must become engaged in the goal you have set forth for yourself. It must be with your focus that you analyze it, plan it, desire it and embark, upon it. In short, you must become your goal. Everything about you, everything inside of you, everything that you are must be concentrated, focused and wanted this recovery, more than anything else in your life. Step 2 Believe: Now that you have decided to recover from the pain of grief, the second step on your path is to believe that it is possible. You must forsake any and all doubts that might be lurking within yourself. Rid your life, your mind and your soul of them. You must believe that you can recover by your dedication of your belief in yourself. You must
believe that you will not give up, that you will embark on this journey and that you will endure it, to the end. Step 3 Faith: Belief and faith are two different concepts. To believe something is to accept it as truth. Faith; however, is your complete trust or confidence in that, which you believe. Now that you have decided to recover, immersed yourself in your goal, forsaken any and all doubts, replaced them with the faith, belief in yourself, your goal with your abilities; you must now pursue your goal with complete trust and confidence that you will accomplish your efforts successfully. The Lord Jesus Christ said that should you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you could move mountains. “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place and it shall remove and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” (Matthew 17:20) Therefore, the third step to grief recovery, is
to apply faith. We are called upon to bear many mountains in life. One of the largest mountains to overcome, is grief. Miracles are predicated upon your faith; faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and in his power to help you. You must trust and have confidence that his will is to help, love and to redeem yourself. He took it upon Himself from our miseries, mistakes, weaknesses and sins. He paid the compensatory price and provided the power for us to move even the largest mountains placed before us. That power, can affect to miracles and move mountains; it is obtained not only through our belief in him, but, in our application of our faith in his miraculous mission and his grace. Moving a mountain would indeed be a miracle, so, too, is grief recovery. Step 4 Prayer: Christ and Heavenly Father do not expect us to accomplish anything without their help. have faith and doubt not, ye shall not only do this, which is done to the fig tree, but also, if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done and all things, whatsoever, ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” (Matthew 21:21-22). Over the years, the number one thing my clients tell me is that prayer is their most comforting tool. It is the tool that brings them solace when they feel alone. It is the tool that chases away the demons that grief ushers in, it is also the tool that opens the gate to the miracle of recovery. If you are suffering loss and grief, I invite you to put into practice this four-step plan. It is my belief that this plan will move your mountain and cast it into the sea. I have faith that through your faith, you will recover this dreadful loss and ensuing grief. Through immersing yourself in your goal, believing in your abilities and casting out your doubts, applying faith to your pursuit, praying to God to help you crush and remove its pain; I believe your mountain will fall into the sea and you will find joy and happiness, in life, once again. I know this path works, because, I have applied it. I have walked through the valley of the shadow of death and I have come out on the other side, renewed and able to traverse life without the debilitating pain and heartache imposed through grief. My prayer is that you will experience the healing powers of God; that you will reach out to him and ask for his assistance, that you will have faith that he will deliver you from the mountains that crush you in life, that the glories of relief and recovery, will be yours. The pain of grief is all-consuming and it may seem as though there is no light at the end of the tunnel, awaiting you. However, if you will apply these steps, I believe that Christ’s graces and miracles, will be yours.

Asset Diversification: Proper diversification across non-correlated asset classes is the key to protecting one from too much volatility in the markets, Godlewski says. A non-correlated asset is an asset whose value isn’t tied to larger fluctuations in the traditional markets. “Many people think they are very diversified because they have different stocks and mutual funds, but that is not being diversified,” he says. “Stocks and mutual funds are just one asset class. Noncorrelated assets such as real estate, commodities, municipal bonds can help you diversify.” Annuities: “They all sound similar, but, they all work differently,” Godlewski says. “Some have high fees, some have low fees. Some are safe, some have risks. Annuities can get complicated and it’s wise to have a fiduciary, that explains, the differences.
Godlewski points to three key areas where myths and misconceptions can cost you in retirement: taxes, asset diversification and annuities.

the biggest misconceptions people have is that they will pay less in taxes in retirement, but for many, that’s not true. “For one thing, they won’t have many deductions anymore,” he says. “If they were itemizing, a lot of those deductions, would go away. Most of the money, Americans have, is in taxdeferred accounts such as IRAs and 401(k)s, they’re going to pay taxes on those distributions. Therefore, they need to strategize to lower their tax bill in the future.” Taxes: One strategy, Godlewski
says, is doing partial Roth conversions on their IRAs and 401(k)s. “Roth IRAs offer tax-free growth on both the contributions and the earnings that accrue over the years, the other big benefit in retirement is that you won’t pay taxes, when you take the money out,” he says. “When current tax rates are relatively low, it’s a good window of opportunity to partially convert to a Roth.” Godlewski says tax diversification also is important – having a portion in taxable accounts, another amount in taxfree accounts and some in taxdeferred accounts.
