What had been in the planning stages for nearly a month, became reality when 33 sailors from the USS De Wert (Mayport, Fl.) came to American Legion Post 92 in Hollywood for an evening of food, drink, fun and plenty of stories and thanks. "We have always watched other Posts in South Florida bring in men and women from ships on hand for Fleet Week," said Commander Richard Snyder. "Everyone here wanted to have that opportunity to host a group for a night. Annual Police/Fire Open House scheduled for May 12 By Virgil Fernandez, Fire Chief, Chadwick Wagner, Police Chief HOLLYWOOD - On Saturday, May 12, 2012, the Hollywood Fire Rescue and Beach Safety Department in conjunction with the Hollywood Police Department will host the annual Open House at the Public Safety Training Facility located at 3400 North 56th Avenue from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This free, informative and fun-filled event affords both departments the opportunity to showcase various facets of fire/rescue, beach safety and law enforcement. There will be a main show starting at 11:30 a.m. which will demonstrate rope rapelling, vehicle extrication, fire suppression, K-9, and SWAT. There will also be hands on activities including fire hose handling where participants actually get to charge a hose line and police equipment displays allowing people to get a close up view of a bullet proof vest and other law enforcement gear. ‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’ Green Leadership Organization will be a part of Saturday’s Green Fest event HALLANDALE BEACH - This past weekend the world celebrated Earth Day. Rachel Carson penned “The Silent Spring”, a world changing novel in 1962 that sold over 500,000 copies. It opened reader’s eyes and minds to our fragile planet and environmental issues and gave birth to a new wave of environmentalists. There were cross sections of Americans standing up and taking notice. At that time, the US was engaged in the Vietnam War and students and like minded Americans were protesting against the US involvement. The sentiment around the nation was focused against the war and not focused on the gas guzzling economy, but the movement was gradually catching on. It was a back burner issue until Senator Gaylord from Wisconsin was exposed to the 1969 California oil spill that devastated Santa Barbara. He had an idea to harness the student energy as a rallying point to save our plant. He organized a group of over 85 national organizers to establish the first Earth Day of Learning. On April 22, 1970 over twenty million Americans gathered across the nation on campuses, libraries and city halls to learn about and discuss what we could do to help our environment. In 1990 the event went
Mayor Joy Cooper global and now is celebrated in over 141 counties by millions of people. GREEN LEADERSHIP ORGANIZATION (GLO) As Mayor I spearheaded the creation of the Green Leadership Organization. The concept was to partner the city, citizens, consumers and businesses to promote environmental awareness; “Going Green”. This group has worked to create a wonderful day of learning with a focus on planting trees, recycling and conservation. The group is in its 5th year. BILLION ACTS OF GREEN 2012 This year’s GLO organization, in partnership with our City, has been planning Hallandale Beach’s Arbor Earth Day GREEN FEST. This event has been combined with Arbor Day which is celebrated on the last Friday in April. The combination
is very timely. This year’s theme to Earth Day is “Billion Acts of Green”. One of the goals is to plant 1 billion trees globally. Hallandale Beach is ready to do its part. Are you? On May 5th the Green Fest will be continuing a tradition to focus on how we can collectively address our environment. FRUIT TREE GIVE A WAY This year we will be giving away fruit trees. Our city has always promoted Arbor Day by giving away trees to our residents. Residents will need to show proof of residency to receive a free tree. Condominiums can also participate, but only one tree per building address. Fruit trees serve two goals; adding tree canopy and providing backyard gardening. What a better way to help the environment and learn the benefits of providing food that is grown locally. CONDO RECYCLING CITYWIDE The other main focus is recycling. Our recent citizen’s survey showed that our residents want to be able to recycle. Currently we have curbside recycling at multifamily and single family homes. There is a little known fact that we also provide assistance for condos to implement recycling. There has been an on going frustration
on how residents can help implement a condo recycling plan. Our staff has been working with condos to find out how recycling can fit into their buildings. If you want to find out about these best practices, our Sanitation Staff will be providing information. It should be noted that a transition to recycling can save money to your bottom line. SAVE WATER SAVE MONEY Our city continues to focus on water conservation. We have one of the strongest water conservation ordinances in the County and continue
to address water sustainability. Our residents have collectively saved millions of gallons of water. Conservation has tremendous benefits. This is obviously helping the environment, but it goes even further to save money, save energy, reduce the carbon footprint and cuts back on sewer treatment costs that in turn save energy and costs. We have continued to partner with the county on our Water Wise initiatives during the Green Fest we will be providing water saving devices and share water saving ideas that you can implement in you homes
and businesses. ENVIROMENTAL AWARNESS FOR EVERYONE Our Beatification Education and Parks Boards have partnered with GLO to add programs to promote environmental education and awareness. An outline of the evening's events had to be approved by the US Navy, and after everything was signed, it was a go! This evening, which included a great home cooked meal, started out as a group of just 20. But with a chance to get some time away from the ship in an positive
environment, that number jumped to 33. Even with the addition of 13 guests, Post 92 stepped up to the plate and really hit home run. From Snyder, Russ Dobbyn and Al Cavale, who all made it happen from the administrative end, to the Ladies' Auxiliary, it was indeed a night that the entire City of Hollywood took pride in. "I have to say thank you to Hollywood Mayor Peter Bober for getting us a bus to transport our guests to and from Port Everglades," Snyder was quick to point out.

Mount Sinai case study examines potential relationship between consumption of energy drinks and heart attacks
MIAMI BEACH - A case study from Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida examines the potential relationship between heart attacks and energy drink intake. The study was recently published in the American Heart Association’s publication, Circulation. (Circulation 2012, 125:1447-1448) A 24-year old, previously healthy male presented himself to the Mount Sinai Emergency Room with a 10-hour history of nausea, palpitations and severe chest pain described as constant pressure. His symptoms begin approximately one to two hours after having consumed three vodka and energy drink cocktails. The subject had no prior history or family history of heart disease and, tests concluded that he had no other forms of recreational or prescription drugs in his system. Upon admission, his initial electrocardiogram (ECG) showed normal sinus rhythm. However, upon repeating the test, the subject showed a rapid ST elevation, which signifies a blockage of a coronary artery most commonly caused by a thrombus or an embolus. He was taken into the cardiac catheterization laboratory where the diagnosis was made. A large clot was seen in the main coronary of the heart. The
patient developed congestive heart failure and was taken into surgery where a coronary bypass graft surgery was ultimately performed. The patient recovered well and all further laboratory tests, including a lipid profile and coagulation panel, were within normal limits. The patient was discharged home on warfarin, an anticoagulant used to prevent blood clots. Though the case study cannot conclude that the mixture of alcohol and energy drinks was, indeed, the cause of this patient’s heart failure, it also cannot be ruled out as it was the only variable present that was outside of his norm. “Though this case study does not conclude that consumption of energy drinks cause heart attacks, we cannot ignore that this was the only variable that was different in this young patient’s routine,” said Dr. Esteban Escolar, cardiology at Mount Sinai and one of the study’s authors. “In fact, there are several other published studies that have recorded a possible correlation between energy drinks and cardiac issues. Once our study is compiled with the others, they begin to show a trend that cannot be ignored and must be investigated further.” Previous case reports have linked energy
drinks with sudden cardiac death, coronary vasospasm, reversible postural tachycardia syndrome, and serious arrhythmias, including ventricular fibrillation. A recently published article in the American Journal of Medicine demonstrated that 250 mL of energy drink can acutely cause endothelial dysfunction and significantly increase platelet aggression. Almost all such commercially available drinks have the same basic stimulants – caffeine, glucoronolactone, taurine, and vitamins – and it is difficult to know which component besides caffeine, which has been ruled out, is responsible for the effect in platelet aggregation and endothelial function. It's why we get a rush when we see Jason take his axe to some unsuspecting teen in "Friday the 13th" or why we can't seem to look away when Carrie, dripping with pig's blood, incinerates her entire high-school class. While mesmerizing, to be sure, the real question is: why do we pay for the pleasure of being scared? On this, there are various schools of thought. Some believe that fans of horror (be it movies or books) don't actually experience fear, but are excited instead, while others believe that people are willing to endure the terror because they know there is no real threat, that they are essentially safe. Still others feel that moviegoers are willing to be scared in order to feel a sense of euphoric relief at the end. Whatever the reason, movie studios like Seven Arts Pictures, a Los Angeles-based indie movie production company, are counting on customers who are willing to pay to be petrified, by releasing a horror flick like "Night of the Demons." In the movie, three friends attend a party held in a mansion where, years prior, six people disappeared and the owner hung herself. "We think that people have a morbid fascination with the dark side," said Peter Hoffman, CEO of Seven Arts. "So even though a horror movie might be illogical on an intellectual level, people still like to be uncomfortable on an emotional level. It's about people facing their fears," he added. Which makes sense and explains why many of us have (reluctantly) stuck our hand down the garbage disposal, just waiting for our fingers to brush up against something (or, perhaps, for the machine to turn on by itself, shredding the hand inside ? la Stephen King), or why we might refuse to put our leg out of the covers at night. This, too, is why we keep creepy haunted houses busy at Halloween, why we tell ghost stories around the campfire and why we turn out for horror movies like they were giving away free popcorn. The works of Estera Nanassy are on display this month at the Cultural Community Center, 410 SE 3rd Street. Two dozen of her paintings may be seen during regular hours. The artwork display is part of the City’s continuing commitment to highlight art of local and area artists. Her artwork features still life, people and everyday beach scenes common in Florida. Originally from Romania, Ms. Nanassy’s works have been exhibited at, among other locations, the Gallery Art in Aventura, and in the offices of the American Red Cross in Portland, OR. Ms. Nanassy will be at the Cultural Center on Thursday, May 24, to meet members of the public. Her work will be on display through Thursday, May 31. GREENFEST 2012 The City of Hallandale Beach and Hallandale Beach Area Chamber of Commerce host event this Saturday Preserving and conserving the environment will be the focus of the first GreenFest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., this Saturday, May 5, at Hallandale Beach City Hall, 400 S. The bicycles are in and the Internet connection is being tweaked for the opening of two Broward B-Cycle stations in Hallandale Beach. Broward B-Cycle plans to open the stop at the Cultural Community Center, 410 SE 3rd Street, within the next seven days, and the new station outside the North Beach City Center, 2801 East Hallandale Beach Boulevard, later this month. When connected, the stations will serve as the southernmost stops on the Broward BCycle network, linking Hallandale Beach to Pompano Beach. The network includes about 25 stops. The City worked with Broward BCycle to install the stations as part of Hallandale Beach’s ongoing commitment encouraging green activities. As part of the event, the City is sponsoring a “Garbage-to-Art” contest. Open to students and adults, the artwork must be fashioned from recyclable materials, metals, glass, or paper, or any item that can be reused. Artwork in this
contest must be dropped off by 5 p.m., Friday, May 4, at the Cultural Community Center, 410 SE 3rd Street. Plaques will be awarded to the winners. Also, the City’s Beautification Board is sponsoring a poster art contest open to elementary school students. The winning artwork will become the official poster for GreenFest 2013. The event will include
numerous displays on water and energy conservation. Residents can drop off old batteries, cell phones and expired medications for recycling or disposal. The Broward County Sheriff’s office will be shredding documents collecting old medications for disposal, and personal papers and records for security shredding. GreenFest is free and refreshments will be available.
Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics
--Special Olympian Ricky Scott, holding torch, is ready to step out and start the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics last Thursday on South Ocean Drive at County Line Road. Ricky paced more than 40 runners, including many from the Hallandale Beach Police Department, on the annual run along the coast. Grilled Catfish With Avocado Sauce and Roasted Peppers Four 7-ounce catfish fillets Olive oil Salt and pepper Avocado Sauce: 1 large avocado, peeled, pitted and cut into 1/2-inch cubes 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon mayonnaise 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1 hard-boiled egg, peeled and chopped 1 cup toasted and chopped pecans (optional) Combine all ingredients except pecans (reserve for garnish) Roasted Peppers: 2 red bell peppers 1.
