SPOTLIGHT ON HOLLYWOOD Modernization on the FPL Plant at Port Everglades

By Jaye Epstein, Public Affairs and Marketing Director HOLLYWOOD Florida Power & Light’s Port Everglades energy plant will soon undergo a billion dollar modernization. Modernization to the 1960s-era energy plant will include the transition to a cleaner and more efficient energy source.

Compared to the current plant, which uses 60 percent oil and 40 percent natural gas, the new plant will be powered only by natural gas. The new plant will burn 35 percent less fuel per megawatt hour and drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions. According to FPL, compared to

the former plant, the new plant would cut carbon dioxide emissions rate in half and reduce air emissions by more than 90 percent. Modernization to the Port Everglades energy plant will also include revamping the current plant’s design

and replacing it with a much sleeker design, with smoke stacks only half as tall.

In addition to environmental benefits, construction of the new energy plant will produce economic benefits for the City of Hollywood and sur-

rounding area. Construction will generate an estimated 650 jobs directly and over a thousand indirectly. Although there will be a hiatus of tax revenue being produced during the construction period, revenue is estimated to increase significantly after construction. The Port Everglades energy plant is expected to generate over $20 million in new tax revenue to local governments and school districts in the first full year of operation. Currently, Hollywood receives about $1 million a year in tax revenue from FPL for the plant. Following completion of the project the city can expect to see that number grow to $7 million.

Scheduled to open in 2016, the new energy plant will provide about 1,200 megawatts of

electricity, meeting power needs for about 260,000 of FPL’s 4.5 million customers.

Last Saturday, the City of Hallandale Beach and the Hallandale Beach Area Chamber of Commerce held its annual GreenFest at the City Hall complex, which provided four hours of learning and walking away with some free things that would help you do your part in making this a safer society.

"This is a tremendous event," said Chamber President Carol Pumpian. "It brings out the community and those who want to actually do their part to make this a greener society."

Pumpian, along with many of Chamber Board members and the City of Hallandale Beach, had the opportunity to really get involved in this year's event that provided such things as free fruit trees, faucets and plenty of information and demonstrations about what it takes to make those little changes that could add up - in a hurry.

"Anytime you choose to walk, ride a bike or take public transportation, you reduce (or totally eliminate) the carbon dioxide and particulate emissions created by driving a gas or diesel-powered car,"

said Fort Lauderdale resident and green activist Carl Miller. "You'll help slow global warming and help stave off our date with peak oil."

Miller attends several going green events in South Florida, preaching the reality of making changes in our lives. He was in Hallandale Beach to do much of the same.

No matter where you walked on Saturday, there was a reminder of how much we are all trying to do to cut down on pollution, waste water and make a difference in our community. Hosting this yearly event has truly helped in educating the residents on how the City of Hallandale Beach will end up winning in this race to keep the air clean and end up saving all of us money.

To me, many of the most interesting exhibits came from the City of Hallandale Beach. The creative displays served as a reminder that we can do our own part.

With the Fire Department, Parks and Recreation and other community services on hand, this was one of those days that every city benefits from, and certainly hundreds walked away with a lot more knowledge than they came with.

• Change to Fluorescent Bulbs - If every house in the United States changed all of the light bulbs in their house, that would be equivalent to taking one million cars off the streets.

• Don't Rinse - Skip rinsing your plates before putting them into the dishwasher. In average you will save 15 gallons of water per load. Plus, you will save time.

• Turn off computers at night - don't just put them to sleep. You will save an average of 4 cents a day which ads up to $14.60 a year.

• Use Both Sides of Paper - if you have a printer with a double sided print option use it.

You will save half of the amount of paper you would have normally used.

• Don't get bottled water - Instead of bottled water get a reusable container to carry water.

Also you can get a filter to make your home tap taste more like bottled water. It is definitely more cost efficient.

• Shorten your shower Every minute you cut from your shower is roughly 5 gallons of water. The less time your shower takes, the lower your impact on the environment.

• Use Warm or Cold Setting on Washer - instead of the hot cycle use the warm or cold setting. This will save a lot of energy a year.

• Use Matches instead of lighters - Lighters are usually considered disposable so they will most likely end up in land fills. You can use the cardboard matches which are much more eco-friendly because they are made of recycled material.

• Go to a car wash Going to a car wash is a lot more water efficient then washing your car at home.

• Pay your Bills Online If every house in the US did this then we would save 18 million trees every year.

• Plant a Tree or Vegetables - It's good for

the air, can keep you cool, and can increase your property value.

• Walk or Ride Your Bike When you can - If you have to go somewhere close consider riding your bike or walking there instead of your car. It's better on the environment and healthier.

Amanda Anisimova headed to Nick Bollettieri Discovery Open The tennis world’s most acclaimed coach, Nick Bollettieri, seeks to discover the world’s next champion tennis player. To accomplish this, he has founded the Nick Bollettieri Discovery Open junior tennis event at IMG Academies. Bollettieri and his staff of coaches pored over thousands of applications, seeking only the best 11, 13 and 15 year-old players to gain entry into the tournament. One applicant that earned an invitation to compete in this year’s Open is Amanda Anisimova of Hallandale Beach, who will compete in the 11-year old age division.

The winner of the Discovery Open will receive the once in a lifetime opportunity to earn a one-year scholarship to IMG Academies, and receive coaching at the same school that has developed ten world number-one players: Andre Agassi, Boris Becker, Jim Courier, Martina Hingis, Jelena Jankovic, Marcelo Rios, Monica Seles, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Venus Williams.

Shining the spotlight on Teacher Appreciation Week HALLANDALE BEACH - This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Far too often the dialogue about schools revloles around funding, school facilities, class size and FCAT. The focus should be on the students and people that impact their lives at school most; TEACHERS. Many readers might not be aware of the fact that over the past nine years we have taken very seriously our partnership with our local schools.

Last month our city was the first city in Broward County to be recognized for our commitment to education. Vice Mayor Sanders, I, the principles of our schools and other community partners were recognized with a proclamation at the School Board meeting. While it was about recognizing our city, the true goal was to recognize how important partnerships are and how we can help our children and educators succeed.

There are over 2800 students attending classes throughout the year in Hallandale Beach. Our elementary school is multitrack year-round with 1100 students; our middle school has been open 4 years and now has over 400 students; Hallandale High School has become a full magnet school with almost 1000 students plus there two alternative schools in our city.

Every school day there are hundreds of teachers that are working in the classroom teaching our children.

Many times they reach into their own pockets for supplies, deal with limited technical resources, and not only teach reading and writing, but they stand in as the nurse, counselor or coach. Many teachers go the extra mile and tutor students after school, run clubs, run sports teams and extracurricular activities.

It takes a special person to be a teacher. In today's times with budget cuts and threats of being laid off, teaching also takes heart and courage.

We are extremely proud of our teachers.

The super-majority of teachers continues because they love it; not simply to make a living and many go the extra mile. This week everyone should go the extra mile and take a moment to thank our teachers.

Last week a group of special teachers took time out of their schedule to help facilitate a Student Awareness Day. For the past two years the City of Hallandale Beach, Hallandale High School and the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center has partnered to present an educational morning on the Holocaust and how important it is to never forget. Under the leadership of Principal Estella Eckardt, Magnet Coordinator Marilyn Santiago worked with documentation and

Mayor Joy Cooper Staff to present over 100 students an opportunity to speak with Holocaust survivors one-on-one.

I had an opportunity to welcome all the students and survivors and spend the morning through lunch with them. This year's discussion started with a video titled “Children Remember the Holocaust”. The survivors who are still here today were children or young adults when they witnessed and experienced the many atrocities. As the table facilitator, I spent the morning with Jules Eisenstein. He was 20 years old when he was captured and sent to the work camp. He spent over four years and was fortunate to be liberated along with his brother from

Auschwitz.

The young adults around the table listened intently to his story. Each one of the students had an opportunity to ask questions and get to know and love Jules. By the end of the day, one young lady even asked if she could adopt him as her grandparent. I was so impressed and humbled by how these young adults behaved and most importantly, shared what they learned from the day.

Many students discussed how they often were bullied or became bullies and what they had learned was a different way to handle, discuss and accept our differences. On behalf of the students, the Holocaust Documentation Center and the Survivors I want to publicly thank our Commission for standing up and supporting funding for this educational opportunity.

May is also the time we recognize Law Enforcement Memorial Day. Nationally this is the time when we honor the memory of those police that were killed in the line of duty.

A special service was conducted last

Wednesday in Davie, Florida to recognize all the fallen officers from Broward County. Chief Dwayne Flournoy pointed out that it is always devastating to lose someone in the line of duty. This year Broward was more fortunate than in years past and has only suffered the loss of three officers.

Friday will be the beginning of a wonderful weekend of city fun that will start at Bluesten Park with our annual “Relay for Life” starting at 6 PM Friday the 18th to 10 AM Saturday. Relay is a great way to come together to support the American Cancer Society and the fight for a cure.

The party continues with the City’ s 85th Birthday Bash on Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM. Come out and enjoy entertainment, games food and free swimming at our pool.

After the Birthday celebrations, on May 19 we will be partnering with Hallandale High Alumni Association under the leadership of Qunea Gordon to celebrate the second annual “Armed Forces Day” at Hallandale High School from 3 to 6 PM. The theme this year is “Honoring Our Heroes” and “Unity in the Community”. We will be recognizing all our heroes in the community, showcasing our police, firefighters and all branches of the military. Organization has always chosen the high school to engage school students in a positive manner with police, firefighters and military personnel as a learning experience.

This year they will also be paying special tribute to one of our community heroes, “Sir John Hardwick”. John was noticed Mr. Hallandale and played key

roles in advocating for the Palms Community.

The Palms was the name John submitted when they were selecting a new name for the Northwest quadrant.

John also was a strong advocate for education, entrepreneurialism and the revitalization for Foster Road.

On Sunday PALS 5k/10K hosted at Gulfstream Park will be taking place. Registration starts at 6 AM. You can also register on line.

Foster Care Awareness Day at Ingalls Park in Hallandale Beach Sara Brown hosted her first Foster Care Awareness Day at Ingalls Park in Hallandale Beach that featured a bounce house, face painting and rock climbing as well as a DJ and a host of delicious grilled food for the families who attended.

“You do not have to be a foster parent or child to enjoy today’s festivities” explained Brown, the public is invited to learn more about the iCenter’s host of services offered to children and young adults who are considered at risk and necessitate assistance learning life skills that will benefit them in the future including but not limited to academic assistance, table etiquette, and dress including teaching boys how to wear a tie.

Final budget workshop to be held on May 23 Hallandale Beach residents and business owners are invited to review the proposed fiscal 2013 budget in the final Budget Awareness Town Hall at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 23, in the City Commission Chambers.

The review is the fifth Budget Awareness Town Hall Meeting hosted by City Manager Mark Antonio to collect suggestions and ideas before presenting the budget to the Mayor and City Commission. At the beginning of the budget process, Mr. Antonio hosted Budget Awareness meetings in each of the four quadrants in February.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to speak up and offer suggestions before the final draft of fiscal 2013 is presented to the City Commission. City Commissioners will review and adjust the proposed budget at City Commission meetings in August and September prior to adopting the fiscal 2013 budget.

The meeting is your chance to make a difference in the community. In the quadrants meetings, residents raised issues as varied as the Parks Master Plan, traffic congestion, drainage and litter, among others. The comments collected at the quadrant meetings were discussed by the City staff, and department heads, and several ideas are included in the draft budget.

Resident involvement is essential to the City’s new business approach to government. The City converted from a traditional government-run operation to a corporate structure shortly after Mr. Antonio became City Manager. In the corporate structure, the residents and business owners are the shareholders. Input from the shareholders is central to the budget process.

Residents are urged to attend and speak up, participate and take an active role in the drafting of the budget.

Plans for the redesign and reconstruction of B.F. James Park is the first of the three information meetings, Thursday, May 24, in the gymnasium at O.B. Johnson Park, 900 NW 8th Avenue. Discussions on the redesign of Joseph Scavo Park are planned for Tuesday, May 29, and South City Beach Park on Thursday, May 31. The Scavo Park and South City Beach meetings will be at the Cultural Community Center, 410 SE 3rd Street. At the Scavo Park meeting, residents of the Northeast Quadrant will be asked for their ideas on the development of the old Ben Gamla property, 416 NE 8th Avenue. The City purchased the property last fall.

The redesign and upgrade at B.F. James Park will include a swimming pool and new playground, among other amenities and upgrades.

At Scavo Park, a new playground is being added, along with two dog parks, one for large breeds and one for small breeds, and walking paths among other improvements at the complex located at 900 Three Islands Boulevard.

South Beach Park, located on South Ocean Drive, is expected to get a facelift, with a new dunes, sand volleyball court, redesigned bocce courts, a new pavilion, concession stand, new playgrounds and changing facilities, among others.

City officials and Parks Master Plan designer Bermello Ajamil and Partners, Inc. have tweaked the original designs in the Parks Master Plan. At the meetings, residents are will be able to examine the final scale drawings and layout of each of the parks.

Construction is expected to begin on all three parks later this year. However, work on the South City Beach project could be delayed depending on the processing of local, state and federal permits. Beach projects require review by multiple agencies because of the sensitive nature of the land. Construction at B. F. James Park and Scavo Park require only local permits.

SUFFERING FROM MIGRAINES? Treatments help prevent attacks before they start (ARA) - What really is migraine? Some people casually use the term to describe a bad headache. But the millions who have been diagnosed with a migraine condition know that it's so much more than that. In addition to severe head pain that can last for hours or even days, they may also experience nausea, vomiting and extreme sensitivity to light or sound.

Are there effective treatments for preventing debilitating migraine attacks? New guidelines say yes, but many people are not taking advantage of these treatments.

Migraine is a condition involving recurring headaches that often can last anywhere from two hours to four days, and can completely interrupt your daily activities, impair your work performance and affect your family obligations. Research shows that many treatments can help prevent migraines, yet few people use these preventive treatments, according to new guidelines issued by the American Academy of Neurology and American Headache Society.

"Studies show that

migraine is under recognized and undertreated," says guideline author Dr. Stephen Silberstein of Jefferson Headache Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. "About 38 percent of people who suffer from migraine could benefit from preventive treatments, but less than a third of these people currently use them."

Unlike acute treatments, which are used to relieve the pain of a migraine attack when it occurs, preventive treatments usually are taken every day to lessen the frequency, severity and duration of attacks.

"Some studies show that migraine attacks can be reduced by more than half with preventive treatments," Silberstein says.

Some over-thecounter treatments may offer relief for migraine sufferers.

Several herbal preparations, vitamins and minerals are used for preventing migraine.

The guideline research found that the herbal supplement Petasites, also known as butterbur, is effective in pre-

migraine. It's important to discuss prescription drug options with your doctor to see if one is right for you.

In addition, several drugs for inflammation have been studied for migraine prevention.

"I suffered with this for years and now I want to help women avoid some of the frustrations I encountered," says Iovine.

One in five women suffer with heavy cycles, but many live with the issue for years before getting the help they need. Some women have a hard time starting the conversation with the doctor out of embarrassment and may think the pain and quality-of-life issues that come along with this condition is something they must simply deal with.

While it can be a difficult topic to discuss, it's something your doctor wants to hear about because it's a treatable condition. If you're having trouble starting the conversation with your doctor, here are a few ways to introduce the topic: * "I'd like to ask you a few questions about my menstrual cycle…" * "I've noticed my cycles are different than they used to be…" * "I've heard a lot of women are getting treated - is this something I should consider?"

"My husband was the one who finally insisted I confess my monthly hemorrhaging to my gyno," Iovine adds. "I guess he'd finally noticed I slept in sweatpants on a beach towel several days each month."

In addition to the newest edition of the "Girlfriend's Guide," a new website is available connecting women with other women who've already dealt with the condition. Changethecycle.com was created in partnership with Hologic, manufacturers of NovaSure, a procedure for ending heavy periods. Though NovaSure is only intended for women who are finished having children, the simple, one-time procedure - which lasts about five minutes and can be done in a doctor's office with no incisions or anesthesia - has helped many women regain their quality of life. Iovine had the NovaSure procedure and was hired as a spokesperson.

What other steps can you take to avoid migraine attacks?

In addition to preventative treatments, it's wise to avoid common migraine triggers. In some people, migraine headaches can be triggered by certain foods and beverages, according to the American Headache Society.

Skipped meals, dehydration, strong odors and bright lights are other factors to avoid if possible.

"Migraines can get better or worse over time," Silberstein says.

"People should discuss these changes in the pattern of attacks with their doctors and see whether they need to adjust their dose or even stop their medication, or switch to a different medication."

By Marylynne Newmark Medical Writer AVENTURA - The specialists at the Miami Center for Advanced Cardiology located at Mount Sinai Aventura are on a mission to make women more aware of their own heart health, especially here in the North Dade/ South Broward area.

Their combined cardiac specialties range from initial evaluation of cardiovascular or related pulmonary symptoms to non-invasive diagnostic modalities, as well as advanced interventional technology such as cardiac catheterizations, balloon angioplasties and stent implants. All are board certified cardiologists.

The team includes Dr. Ralph G. Nader, specialist in clinical and interventional cardiology, Dr. Ranley Desir, with specialized training in echocardiography and nuclear cardiology, and Dr. Jay Levine, board certified in clinical cardiology.

All three doctors are on a campaign to educate women as to cardiac symptoms that should be checked immediately.

“Women tend to have different symptoms than men,” says Dr. Nader.

“As opposed to the acute chest pain that a man might experience, a woman might have back pain, shortness of breath, nausea, and pain radiating up to the jaw. These are symptoms that need to be checked as soon as possible.”

Dr, Ranley Desir specializes in the early recognition of cardiac pathology, using non-invasive techniques such as cardiac nuclear stress tests, echocardio-

graphy and vascular ultrasound to diagnose coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease and vascular disorders.

“Since our state-of-the art equipment is located right here in our Aventura office, we are able to immediately identify abnormalities that may be caused by myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, arterial blockage, or valve malfunction. Having the equipment on the premises is a definite plus for our patients,” he adds.

Dr. Jay Levine credits the difference in coronary symptoms between a man and a woman to a woman’s size, hormonal differences and bodily function, as well as to the stage in life that a woman’s symptoms tend to appear.

“It’s been believed that estrogen may have a protective element relating to the heart,” he says,” which is why we tend to see heart damage occurring more frequently after menopause.”

All three cardiologists feel that women are more likely to ignore their symptoms, since they generally are the caregivers of the family, placing every one else’s needs first. The doctors all stress early consultation with a board-certified cardiologist if there is any question or concern, since they agree that a woman’s heart attack or stroke can be more intense than a man’s, resulting in greater damage..

Exercise for healthy aging

(ARA) - Sixty-year-old Ester Kurz does a lot of things, but taking prescribed medicine isn't one of them. While most people her age take a pill for one thing or another, Kurz, from Baltimore, self-prescribes exercise for healthy aging.

On a daily basis Kurz, who will turn 61 in June, goes to the Life Time Fitness in Rockville, Md., to enjoy everything from boot camp to yoga. Her favorite day is Monday, she says, when she goes from kickboxing to indoor cycling class to boot camp. "Each year, I seem to up the number and types of routines," she boasts.

Kurz's attitude is counter to the majority of her peers. Just 30 percent of people between ages 45 and 64 say they engage in regular leisuretime physical activity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 2010 National Interview Survey. As people get older, they move even less: 25 percent are active between the ages 65 and 74 and only 11 percent of those 85 and older say they are active.

That's a problem because studies indicate there's a correlation between activity and a lower death rate in older adults.

"Healthy aging is the ability to maintain your mental, physical and cellular health," says Jason Stella, a personal trainer at Life Time Fitness, The Healthy Way of Life Company. "The process of aging is inevitable, but the choices you make, good or bad, throughout your lifetime dictate the rate at which you will age and the positive or negative health affects you develop."

In particular, Stella says behaviors that sabotage healthy aging include eating processed foods, taking too many medications, not controlling stress and inactivity.

"I have had almost no injuries and very few aches and pains other than when I push myself too hard," Kurz says. In addition to staying physically active, Kurz is a lobbyist for a grassroots advocacy organization, a wife and mother of two sons, ages 19 and 21, as well as a volunteer with several organizations.

"A few years ago, I fell down a flight of stairs and, other than a few bruises and scrapes, did very little damage to my body," Kurz says. "I have to believe exercise had a great deal to do with that."

Regular exercise and physical activity are critical to helping older adults stay independent as they age. Strengthening bone and joint health to protect mobility is all the motivation most active older adults need to exercise.

Kurz appreciates those benefits, too, but likes the added challenges. In February she competed in the Life Time Fitness Alpha Showdown, a national competition that tests the body's core energy systems: power, strength and endurance. Most competitors were much younger than Kurz. "I did not win," she says, "But I don't think I came in last either, which was an achievement."

Firmly in the second half of her life, Kurz is certain she has never been healthier or felt stronger. Life Time Fitness is part of her health aging program, but the facilities, programming and events cater to all ages and abilities, from those new to an exercise routine to those who are emphatic believers in exercise as good medicine, like Kurz.

"Every checkup, my doctor asks me, 'Still exercising like crazy?'" she says. "And then he adds, 'keep it up.'"

BREAKFAST FOR MOM

Banana Oatmeal is the perfect way to start Sunday out.

BUTTERMILK BISCUITS 2 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 3/4 to 1 cup buttermilk 1/2 stick real butter or 1/4 cup shortening 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt In a large bowl. Sift all dry ingredients together. Cut butter or shortening into the flour with finger tips until the consistency is like small peas.

Blend buttermilk a little at a time until all flour is moist and in center of bowl turn onto a floured surface and kneed lightly till easy to work with not sticky.

Roll out and cut bis-

cuits to your favorite size and Bake at 450.F to 475.F depending on your oven.

Bake until golden brown paint with melted butter and serve hot.

BANANA OATMEAL (With Wheat Germ) 3 and 1/4 cup water 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup quick or old fashioned oats 2/3 cup wheat germ toasted 2 medium bananas sliced into coins 4 Tablespoons brown sugar 2 Tablespoons butter You can buy toasted wheat germ or you could toast it yourself.

To toast, just place the wheat germ in a frying

How about treating mom to a Breakfast Frittata or a plate of Welsh rarebit.

Two of the many recipes we bring your way this week.

Start Mother’s Day off with a special breakfast treat pan over medium-high heat. Stir often until it starts to smell nutty.

Bring the water and salt to a boil. Slowly, add the oats and the wheat germ. Reduce the heat to mediumlow, so the water is at a high simmer. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes or until you reach your desired consistency. Sit in the butter until mixed and melted.

Divide the cereal among serving bowls.

Top with banana slices and sprinkle with brown sugar.

APPLE PANCAKES 2/3 cup flour 2 teaspoons sugar ¼ teaspoon salt

4 large eggs (beaten) ½ cup milk 2 cups apples (sliced) ¾ cup butter 2 tablespoons granulated sugar ¼ teaspoon cinnamon Sift together the flour, 2 teaspoons sugar, and salt. Beat eggs and milk together. Gradually add flour mixture and beat until smooth.

Sauté apples in ¼ cup of butter until tender.

Mix 2 tablespoons sugar with the cinnamon; toss with sautéed apples. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a 6inch diameter, deep fry pan. Pour in the batter until about ¼ inch.

When set, place ¼ of the apples on top of the batter; cover with more batter.

Fry pancake until lightly browned on both sides.

Keep warm. Repeat the procedure 3 times, until all batter and apples are used. Serve warm.

We recommend your utilize Granny Smith or Yellow Delicious apples in this recipe for a tart and tangy or mellow flavor, respectively.

Variations: Add 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract to your batter and top your apple pancakes with a sprinkling of grated Nutmeg and Confectioners Sugar.

Makes 4 servings

FLUFFY OMELET 4 eggs whites 4 egg yolks 1/4 cup water dash of pepper 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 tablespoons butter, margarine or drippings Add salt and water to egg whites and beat until stiff, but not dry.
