U.S. 1 Sheds ‘Shady’ Reputation

New Projects & City Ordinances Have Started To Clean Things Up - Greatly! By Larry Blustein @sfsuntimes@aol.com As the “441 Corridor” has often received much of the attention - for the renovations being made to this industrial stretch of highway, U.S. 1 is still trying shed a negative image. From those “one hour” motels to the late hour bars and clubs, it has always been an area that many wanted to avoid and not so many flock to. For much of the past three decades, the street that ran from Hallandale

Beach Blvd. - north to Dania Beach Blvd. - has never been a destination. Tucked away between the fast food restaurants, laundromats, convenience stores, gas stations and car washes, were those hotels - which everyone knew what was going on, but just ignored. “It go to a point where the city officials in all the communities along U.S. 1 - tried everything possible to clean things up,” Cathy Lambert of Hollywood pointed out. “I have been here for 29 years, and

while things have been changing recently, there was a period that in between the restaurants and other businesses, other things were going on.” From drugs to prostitution, there was no getting around the fact of what was really going on - and that was something that kept people away - and brought them in at the same time. While there was that stigma that this was an US 1, Page 6A

Developments like Art Square in Hallandale Beach are going to be projects that will certainly enhance the look and reputation of the area.

Hemp & Heal Is Truly Life Changing Cannabinoids (CBD) Have Properties That Are Making Many of Us Feel Better When it comes to the way that Jonah Bolt feels about hemp and its many healing principles, he is indeed an open book. Having watched firsthand what hemp can do for all of us - especially his own family, and of course, himself, Bolt has taken his passion and knowledge to the next level - and beyond. Through Hemp & Heal, Bolt has been able to develop a superior product line as well as educate and make sure that those who want to know more, have information from some of

the leading doctors and those who have worked in the field for decades. Hemp is one of the oldest domesticated crops known to man. It has been used for paper, textiles, and cordage for thousands of years. So what exactly is hemp, and how is it different from the psychoactive form of cannabis that we consume medicinally and recreationally? “First of all, I have watched with my own family how this works and how

Hurricane Forecast: Not The News We Needed To Hear 1st Priority Restoration Will Be There For All Your Flooding, Mold & Mildew Issues

If you were watching the forecast for the upcoming hurricane season this past week, you were not not happy. While we love to share our winter weather with anyone in the world, it’s June through the end of November - where listening to the daily tropical weather report can keep

all of us on edge. The thought of another Hurricane Irma or any tropical system coming ashore and causing millions of dollars in damage and threatening our lives - is not something that we want to think about here in April. By mid June and into July - when the ocean

temperatures start to rise and the threat of storms and heavy rains will bring flooding and eventually mold and mildew, that is the time homeowners need to prepare. At 1st Priority Restoration, realizing that we live in an area

Recognizing that the upcoming hurricane season will be more active than last year’s record-breaking season, 1st Priority will be ready to spring into action right away!

they have healed,” Bolt explained. “This is proven though thousands of years that the principals are indeed beneficial, and we have certainly begun to tap into something that is being endorsed and promoted by well respected professionals.” A prominent compound found in Hemp or cannabis, CBD, or cannabidiol, has shown to treat numerous diseases. The benefits heavily outweigh the minor side affects. CBD is a chemical compound that comes from the hemp plant. It is one of over 85 unique compounds found in hemp, known as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids, which can be either consumed (phytocannabinoids) or produced naturally by the body (endocannabinoid), are chemical compounds that interact with the body’s ECS (Endocannabinoid System} which all mammals also have. This system is known to manage homeostasis in the human body and affect bodily processes such as a modulatory system in the function of brain, secretion of hormones related to reproductive functions and response to stress endocrine. CBD is an example of a phytocannabinoid. Although our bodies can naturally produce its own endocannabinoids that bind to cannabinoid receptors in both the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system, phytocannabinoids are known to help to kickstart our central regulatory system. — and the medical world is realizing that its list of medical benefits continues to grow.

PROGRESSIVE DR. MICHELLE WEINER IS SOLD! Dr. Michelle Weiner, DO, is a well respected Pain Management Specialist who has so many patients who have chronic pain, anxiety, arthritis and so many other ailments that CBD has been perfect for. Dr. Weiner has always been open to alternative

treatments - such as holistic medicine, and that is why she has openly embraced Bolt and Hemp & Heal. “I have many patients who continue to take traditional medicines, which I can fully understand, but what we have done is offer them alternatives,” Dr. Weiner pointed out. “Cannabinoids have been huge in the battle against opioids - and something that I 100 percent agree with and support. Indeed with the ongoing battle with opioids, Full Spectrum Hemp Oil has been huge and continues to help those completely get away from something that was doing them so much harm.” Dr. Weiner’s specialty is focused on prevention, treatment, reversal of health deterioration, increasing function and managing pain. She focuses on diagnosing and treating spine and musculoskeletal pain as well as chronic migraines. She performs ultrasound guided joint injections, uses platelet rich plasma (PRP) and is well trained in aesthetic medicine including botox and fillers. She supports medical marijuana and is passionate about educating other medical professionals about the benefits of its use for different medical conditions. In addition, she uses vitamins and supplements as part of her treatments as well. Recently Bolt and Hemp & Heal were selected by a midwest Native American organization to help them combat the opioid epidemic that is gripping the nation. “Because of what we do and our product line has been so successful, people want to jump aboard,” Bolt said. “We have the products - and with last December’s ruling by the World Health Organization that CBD oil is safe, everyone now realizes what we have been talking about for quite some time.” While every product or any remedy will always have its skeptics, Full Spectrum Hemp Oils high in cannabinoids such as CBD, have gained fame as millions are realizing that these neuroprotective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits extend to a variety of neurological disorders such as mild anxiety and dozens of other ailments. “Perhaps the most asked question that we get is will we fail a drug test if we take you products,” Bolt explained. “When you have someone so prestigious as Col. Philip Blair, MD (US Army retired) on your team, I think that answer would be no.” Dr. Blair represents the kind of prestigious professionals on the team - and that is the high quality service that patients can expect. Bolt knows that while Hemp & Heal has only scratched the surface with CBD treatments, there are several ailments that can be helped with the right dosage. “From Acne to ADD/ADHD, Diabetes, Parkinson’s Disease, Heart Disease, PTSD, Kidney & Liver Disease, Cancer, Strokes, Stress and many other ailments, there are certainly treatment options that we provide,” Bolt explained. “Hemp Oil with CBD are finally being singled out for their healing properties - and we

REMINDER: Product Safety Recall Kidde has recalled the Dual Sensor Smoke Alarm, models PI2010 and PI9010, due to risk of failure to alert consumers to a fire. A yellow cap left on during the manufacturing process can cover one of the two smoke sensors and compromise the smoke alarm’s ability to detect smoke, posing a risk of consumers not being alerted to a fire in their home. Hollywood Fire Rescue and Beach Safety encourages consumers to remove the alarm from the wall/ceiling and visually inspect it through the opening on the side of the alarm for the presence of a yellow cap. Consumers should not attempt to take apart the alarm, open the casing, or otherwise remove the yellow cap themselves. If a yellow cap is present, the consumer should immediately contact Kidde to receive instructions and request a free replacement smoke alarm. They should remove and discard the recalled smoke alarm only after they receive and install the replacement alarm. If no yellow cap is present, consumers should reinstall the smoke alarm and no further action is needed. About 452,000 units were sold in the U.S. and 40,000 in Canada at Menards, The Home Depot, Walmart and other department, home and hardware stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com, ShopKidde.com and other websites from September 2016 through January 2018 for between $20 and $40. area that had all that going on, there were too many important places and landmarks - such as Mardi Gras, Gulfstream Park, Jaxson’s - that many still flocked to. Along with a pass through to the beaches, the area remained in the spotlight - through good and bad. Over the years, the political side of the local communities that sit in that area along U.S. 1 have stepped up - and while Hollywood continues to add to its larger city lure, Hallandale Beach and Dania Beach have been trying to keep up - and have invited de-

velopers to make a difference. While the addition of so much in Downtown Hollywood, with residences, restaurants and a new Publix Market, it’s the area to the north that continues to be a concern - and that is something that every city - big and small - run into. “I am impressed at what they have done with the stretch north of Young Circle,” Lambert pointed out. “There are still areas between Johnson and Sheridan that are not the best, but you can see progress - and more prestigious businesses are coming in all the time.” The vacancies that exist along U.S. 1 have

been a problem for quite some time. The economy obviously dictates what direction things move in, but if you are not going to make it between November and April, you have NO shot at making things happen from May to October. In Hallandale Beach, it is all about growth and moving forward - as dining, shopping and residential have started to take the place of those vacant businesses. ArtSquare, Hallandale Beach’s newest apartment community is certainly one of the major projects that is ongoing, changing the look. The expansive communitystyle living, offers endless possibilities. ArtSquare’s

indoor and outdoor living areas fuse to encourage residents to relax, play, dine and shop amidst breezy open air spaces. Modern amenities, bold art and innovative design extend from corner to corner, bringing new life to this area that certainly needed it. In addition, the Village at Atlantic Shores, Phase 1, is moving along right outside the east entrance of Mardi Gras - with major tenants La Estancia Argentina, Doggis Arepa Bar, and Flippo's Kids Playground. Developer Elias Benaim is also looking forward to Phase II, which is also a very exciting project.

Dr. Fox and her team also use state of the art hair removal equipment, The Gentle Max Pro. This is one of the best hair removal lasers and also is wonderful at removing spider veins. All procedures are done in our office and most in less than 15 minutes.

Fox Vein and Laser experts specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of venous disease, including varicose veins. Pictured above is a before and after treatment.

WHAT IS VEIN DISEASE? HOW DOES IT PROGRESS AND WHAT SHOULD I DO? Veins carry blood back to the heart and have oneway valves. These valves may not work correctly and can cause “reflux” or back flow. This causes blood to pool in the ankles and pain, heaviness and swelling in the legs that worsens at the end of the day, after traveling or standing. Over time, the legs get more painful, swollen and bulging veins appear. Discoloration appears in the ankles and skin changes in the ankles and feet develop. As time goes on, skin changes may worsen and the person may develop venous eczema, scarring called lipodermatosclerosis, open sores or ulcers, and bleeding veins. Patients with symptoms should schedule with Fox Vein where Dr. Fox and her team will use ultrasound technology to diagnose the specific vein problem. In the meantime, the person should elevate their legs, wear compression hose and take anti-inflammatories for discomfort.

WHY REMOVE A TATTOO? Around 25-30% of people in the United States have tattoos. At any given time, around a quarter of these individuals want their tattoos removed. Men remove them more than women, usually for professional development. Many jobs will not employ or promote someone with visible tattoos. Governmental jobs, military, police and corporate America often do not want tattoos in visible areas. Some people tattoo their former significant other’s name on them. Some people as they age no longer want their tattoos. Some people want room for more ink and remove tattoos to replace them. Some tattoos fade with age and no longer look attractive. Whatever the reason, Picoway is the best tattoo removal laser. It removes all colors of ink faster, better and with less pain, using Pico technology.

WHY RESOLVE BY PICOWAY? Picoway won laser of the year in 2015. It is one of the newest and best lasers for skin rejuvenation, skin tightening, spot removal, collagen building and reducing the signs of aging with no pain or down time.

Sage Bagel & Deli Is A Tradition Like No Other! If you have lived in or visited South Florida for any length of time - and love to eat at deli, the name Sage Bagel & Deli certainly brings a smile to your face. Since 1973, this Hallandale Beach landmark has been the place where everyone wants to meet and talk about the local news, what’s going on at Gulfstream Park - or chat about family and friends. Under the leadership of original owners Milton and Iris Fuerst and their family, Sage Bagel has become the epicenter of what a South Florida bagel should taste like. It has set standards in a competitive business that has lasted through time - and the rise and fall of so many area eateries that just did not do things the right way. For Ellie Miller and her mother, Grace Topkin of North Miami Beach, Sage Bagel & Deli has been home. It is the highest quality of smoked fish, homemade soups and prepared foods that have kept them coming back. “When places like Wolfie’s and other highly-regarded deli-style restaurants were in the mix, they all used Sage’s bagels,” Miller said. “Every great bagel - back in the 80’s. 90’s and through much of the 2000’s - came from Sage, and that is a fact.” What Sage Bagel & Deli has provided through the years is a culinary destination that brought many New York transplants racing in for that early morning breakfast and the conversations that they grew up with in Brooklyn or Manhattan. It has been about visiting your neighborhood deli - like you were 10 years-old again - and seeing those display cases filled with Corned Beef, Turkey Breast, Pastrami, Beef Tongue and Salami - along with an impressive fish selection that includes Tuna Salad, Lox/Nova, Smoked Whitefish, Sable, Sturgeon and Herring. The prepared foods that have been a part of this deli tradition since opening have been a hit. The Rotisserie Chickens, Eggplant Parmigiana, Stuffed Cabbage, Potato Kugel, Kasha and delicious Po-

tato Pancakes. But perhaps the highlight of walking into Sage Deli are the intoxicating aromas that are coming from the bakery - and the bagels. From Plain to Poppy, Sesame, Onion, Garlic, Everything, Salt, Egg, Jalapeno, Whole Wheat, Whole Wheat Cinnamon Raisin, Marble, Rye, Pumpernickel and Bran, it is easily the most extensive selection you will find. Add in their delicious Onion Pockets, Onion Board (Pletzel), Bialys, Bagel Chips, Challah and Rye Bread - along with sweet treats such as Bobka, Checkerboard Layer Cake, Strudel or the world-famous Rugalach, and you can bring home delicious baked goods every day. THE FOOD IS OUTSTANDING There is no other way to talk about the food at Sage without mentioning how delicious everything is. From early morning breakfasts, to overstuffed sandwiches for lunch - to early dinners - mouth-watering would be the perfect phrase to use. The day starts out with everything from eggs (any way you like) with sides such as Bacon, Sausage and Corned Beef Hash - to 10 different Omelets and the famous Lox, Eggs, & Onions. Sage, Page 3B

Florida Derby Runner-Up Hofburg Gets Back to Work Prepares for the upcoming Kentucky Derby with Half-Mile Work at Payson Park

“This is his first work back, he hadn’t breezed since the Florida Derby, We gave him plenty of time to recover from that race and we had been picking it up, picking it up and today was his first breeze and it sounded like it was good. It sounds like he went very well,” explained Trainer Bill Mott, who missed his connecting flight to South Florida.

Indiantown – Working for the first time since finishing second in the $1 million Xpressbet.com Florida Derby (G1), Juddmonte Farms’ Hofburg cruised a half-mile last Sunday morning at Payson Park in 49.02. Mike Welsch, clocker and writer for the Daily Racing Form, had Hofburg galloping out five furlongs in 1:01.37 and six furlongs in 1:15.30 while working outside Jim Dandy (G2) and New Orleans Handicap (G2) winner Good Samaritan. Welsch said the work was “terrific.” Hofburg was making only his third start in the Florida Derby after finishing fourth at Saratoga last summer in his debut and breaking his maiden at Gulfstream Park March 3. Trainer Bill Mott, who missed a connecting flight Saturday night from Charlotte due to mechanical problems leaving Louisville, said he was pleased with the work after talking to assistant trainer and Eclipse and Sovereign Award-winning jockey Neil Poznansky and fellow trainer Christophe Clement, who is also stabled at Payson. “This is his first work back, he hadn’t breezed since the Florida Derby,” said Mott by phone. “We gave him plenty of time to recover from that race and we had been picking it up, picking it up and today was his first breeze and it sounded like it was good. It sounds like he went very well.” Mott said, depending on weather, he would ship Hofburg to Churchill Downs before his next breeze. “That’s my initial thinking, not to say I couldn’t work him down here again one more time before I go,” he added. “I just want to

wait and see. We’ll look at the entire situation and make what I think is the best decision.” Hofburg, a homebred son of Tapit who finished

two lengths behind Florida Derby winner Audible and a half-length in front of third-place finisher Mississippi, is light on experience but “pretty

professional acting,” according to Mott. “I understand he’s short on seasoning in comparison to any horse who’s had six or eight starts, but it looks like a few of them are not as hardened or seasoned as they would have been in the 70s or 80s,” he said. “But this horse was very professional down at Gulfstream Park, he’s done everything right, and he takes the dirt well, and that’s a good thing, particularly when you’re not a so-called speed horse. You have to be able to take the kick back and stay in the race, so he seems to be able to do that. He did it well at Gulfstream, which I know is probably half the size of the [Kentucky] Derby, but he still handled it well.” Although he missed the breeze, Mott, who had the work recorded, said he had no concerns working Hofburg Sunday

morning. “I have complete confidence in my staff,” said the Hall of Fame horse-

man. “They all pulled together very well and that’s why it went well this morning.”

Going Meatless Never Tasted This Delicious! • 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded fontal • or fontina cheese, divided • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Heat oil in a skillet over high heat. Add mushrooms; sauté 4 minutes. Add herbs and garlic; sauté 1 minute. Stir in 1/3 cup broth, juice, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and pepper. Bring milk and 1 1/2 cups broth to a boil. Stir in polenta; cook 4 minutes, stirring constantly. Stir in half of cheese and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Divide polenta among 4 gratin dishes; top with remaining cheese. Broil 5 minutes. Top each serving with 1/2 cup mushrooms.

While all of us may not be vegetarians, there are times when we want to go meatless - and try some of the delicious dishes you can create with vegetables, grains and unique herbs. In a world where butter and creams have brought cuisine to new levels - being creative and dynamic is what we bring you this week. Enjoy some main dishes that will not only surprise but satisfy - in a major way.

FONTAL POLENTA WITH MUSHROOM SAUTÉ • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 (4-ounce) packages exotic mushroom • blend, chopped • 1 (8-ounce) package pre-sliced • cremini mushrooms • 1 teaspoon minced fresh thyme • 1/2 teaspoon minced fresh oregano • 3 garlic cloves, chopped • 1/3 cup organic vegetable broth • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper • 2 cups 2% reduced-fat milk • 1 1/2 cups organic vegetable broth • 3/4 cup instant polenta

SPICY EGGPLANT AND CAULIFLOWER WITH BASIL • 1 1/2 cups basmati rice • kosher salt • 2 large garlic cloves, finely chopped • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger • 1/3 cup olive oil • 2 teaspoons Thai red curry paste • 3 small or baby eggplants • (about 1 1/2 pounds), cut • lengthwise into wedges • 1/2 head cauliflower (about 1 pound), • broken into florets • 1 15-ounce can chickpeas, drained • and rinsed • 2 cups bean sprouts • 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, torn if large

Heat oven to 450º F. In a large saucepan, combine the rice, ¼ teaspoon salt, and 2 ¼ cups water and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer on low until the water is absorbed, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let sit 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork and set aside. Meanwhile, whisk together the garlic, ginger, oil, curry paste, 1 ¼ teaspoons salt, and ½ cup water. Toss with the eggplants and cauliflower. Transfer to a roasting pan in a single layer.

Roast until tender, about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, adding the chickpeas during the last 5 minutes. Remove the vegetables from oven and toss with the bean sprouts and basil. Place 1 cup of rice on each of 4 plates and top with some of the vegetables.

Add 1/2 cup yogurt sauce and stir just a couple of times (do not completely incorporate yogurt sauce). Heat oil in a 10" cast-iron or oven-safe nonstick pan over medium. Add shallots and potatoes and cook, stirring occasionally, until shallots have softened and potatoes are golden, about 3 minutes. Add greens and cook, stirring occasionally, just until warmed through and wilted if greens were raw. Add egg mixture and cook, shaking pan occasionally, until sides are just beginning to set, 5–7 minutes. Transfer pan to oven and bake frittata until puffed and set, 18–20 minutes. Immediately slide onto a cutting board to cool Cut frittata into 4 wedges and serve with remaining yogurt sauce alongside.

Now that the taxes are filed, give your small business a checkup

(BPT) - A challenge for any entrepreneur is getting access to capital. If you're like many, you're constantly looking for ways to reduce expenses and free up cash flow, so you can be ready for anything, whether it's a slow season or an opportunity to expand. When tax season rolls around, you're already taking a deep dive into your expenses and income for the past year. Don't stop when you file. With all that information at your fingertips (and fresh in your mind), it's a great opportunity to take

a big-picture look at the health of your business and make sure it's running as efficiently as possible. Use the following tips to take your tax preparation efforts a step further and boost your cash flow in the upcoming year. Dust off your business plan: No doubt when you started out in business, you were eager to put your vision to paper. Most entrepreneurs get busy with the day-to-day pressures of deadlines, and that vision can recede into the background. Schedule some time with your board

members or business partners to revisit and update the business plan. Now that you understand the realities of your market, you should have plenty of ideas on creating the 2.0 version of your enterprise. When finished, it's important to not allow it to gather dust again. Set goals and schedule check-in meetings with your team to make sure everything's on track. Update your budget: The nature of entrepreneurship is being agile in the face of change. Market trends, price changes from vendors

and suppliers, effects of new laws and ordinances, even road construction are variable forces that can send anyone's budget into a new direction. That's why your budget isn't ever going to be a spoton prediction. Think of it as a plan. If you stay on top of it, you can spot the trends early and make adjustments right away so you can reap the full advantage - or head off problems before they become unmanageable. Check your credit score: If you're planning to raise capital to expand or make improvements in the next year, checking in on your credit score is an important first step you can take several months before you apply for the loan. Even if you have a business credit score, certain business loans still require a look at your personal credit score, especially if you're a sole proprietorship. Visit VantageScore.com to find free resources to learn your credit score. There's also helpful information on what fac-

tors influence your score and things you can do that can help increase it over the coming months to help you get the best rate possible. Create a tax strategy: The tax break Congress passed in December will save small business owners 20 percent on their tax bill this year. In the coming year, small business owners have many opportunities to capture more tax savings with the right plan and strategy. For example, if you're planning a large equipment purchase, you may find yourself in a better tax bracket in 2019 if you time it before Dec. 31, rather than waiting until the following year as planned. Have a meeting with your accountant to discover more ideas. Pay down debt: One way to use the windfall of your 20 percent tax savings is to pay down revolving loan debt. Doing so is a great way to raise access to working capital, should you need it down the line. on the Depending source of credit, reduc-

ing your credit-to-balance ratio is one factor that could raise your credit score. Before you do so, make sure you have enough cash flow to meet your expenses. Improve accounts receivable: If your business extends lines of credit to your customers, it may be worthwhile to implement a credit check policy on all new customers. Knowing they're creditworthy before the fact can help you create the appropriate plan for them and protect your business. Credit reporting is also an effective way for even a small business owner to let customers know they are serious about collecting what's owed. In the end, you'll get paid faster and increase cash flow. The life of an entrepreneur means things can change drastically on a dime. A thorough check-in with your finances can put you in the best position for success. To learn more about the tools and solutions offered by VantageScore, visit Your.VantageScore.com
