‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’ The budget remains a major issue in the City
Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - As the budget process continues, the City Commission has had the opportunity to review proposed capital improvement projects for the fiscal year 201213. The Department Directors have proposed their wish list of items they would like to see included. This list projected a 30% increase in the budget. At the last commission meeting I shared the areas that I suggest cuts or deferments until many of our existing projects are already completed. SUGGESTED BUDGET CUTS The first cut was eliminating $1 million of business incentive loans from our general fund budget. The CRA has already proposed a $4 million line item to encourage redevelopment within the CRA to focus on hotel and office use. $1 million was earmarked for outside of the CRA which is everything west to 14th Avenue. Since this area has already been a main focus of investors, there was no need for this additional cost to our general fund. Another area of concern is the budget of additional $1 million for the enterprise system replacement. In January I pushed for the expediting of this project and requested that the City bring in the consultant to do a full evaluation. The City Manager is evaluating consultants and will be bringing back a recommendation to the City Commission. While this item will be not be fully cut from the budget it will be prudent for us to evaluate what infrastructure will remain in-house and what systems we can utilize outside. CAPITOL IMPROVEMNTS
REQUESTED The largest proposed capital improvement that was added this year continues to be a $9 million request to replace our Main fire station. An additional $1.5 million was requested to replace the Three Islands Fire Station with a projected total replacement cost of 3.5 million. The City is in the process of planning for the main station and is negotiating with the land owner of the old City Hall. The Three Islands Station budget item will most likely be deferred. WELL FIELD PROJECT The next large budget item includes the moving of our well fields to fend off saltwater intrusion. To date the City has accumulated $7.2 million towards the cost of this project. Staff is negotiating with Hollywood as well as Broward County to ensure this project gets completed. SEWER REHABILITATION Next large ticket item is the sanitary sewer rehabilitation. Our City has continually invested in capital improvement upgrades to replace our aging infrastructure. Our readers may recall the sewer main breaks that occurred on 14th Avenue. Our city crews continually monitor our system through smoke testing and televising. There are four main areas that Staff is focusing on; Layne Boulevard to 14th Ave.; N E 7th St. to Moffit Street, Hallandale Beach force main at Egret Drive and the rehab from Layne Boulevard to Sunset Drive. These rehabilitations are critical not only to prevent future breaks, but to limit infiltration into the system. This infiltration is estimated to be costing our city over $2.8 million in sewer treatment costs to the City of Hollywood who handles sewer treatment for Hallandale Beach and five other municipalities including the County. After attending US Conference of Mayors in January I brought back a new
paid through user fees, land acquisitions which are being paid through combination CRA Tax Increment Funding and general fund and major sewer line replacement on 14th Avenue. LIMITED USE OF RESERVES Understanding the budget process is critical to understanding where your tax dollars are invested. The entire City Commission continues to be fiscally prudent and conservative. City Manager Antonio reassured the Commission that he anticipates negotiating with all the
Directors over the next weeks to keep the budget in line. He believes that there will be limited utilization of reserve funds similar to last year to make sure we are addressing the needs and goals of our residents while addressing infrastructure and pensions. COMPREHENSIVE INFRASTUTRE PLANNING The majority of capital improvement projects within our budget are usually planned multiple years in advance. Monies are set aside and carried forward and expended during the construction process. The overall budget from 2012 including what was carried over from prior years of 108 million dollars. Of that amount 72 million has been expended. The balance moving forward after January is 36 million. This year there are requests totaled $17
million. These are large figures and the best way to look at them is as an infrastructure bank. The City has been planning, saving and budgeting to keep up with the demands on our infrastructure. Included in these figures are also $8 million for programmed Park improvements for BF James Park, Joe Scavo Park and South Beach Park. As I have written in the past we have very limited debt for a city our size. We have borrowed in the past through state bonds for our water plant which is being

practice from the Water Counsel. Many water infrastructure vendors are pre-paying for infrastructure improvements and then the savings pays off the project. Staff is still evaluating this concept in the hopes to address this long-term concern. This is a critical issue. Not only does the City have to replace aging sewer infrastructure, but the lateral lines are also being analyzed for replacement. These are the lines that run from the street to the private property. At our recent Commission meeting our Public Works Director shared three alternatives that are being evaluated to address these long-term costs. One is simply having residents themselves pay for their portion from the city connection to their home out-ofpocket. This cost can range anywhere from $1500-$3000. This is the responsibility of residents in municipalities due to the fact cities only have easements up to the property line. The second alternative would be a cost share alternative where the City covers the cost and the citizen pays it out through their water bills. The third is another alternative. It is a program I brought back from the National League of Cities. It is a new insurance product that is specifically for residents to cover pipes. Staff is evaluating all these alternatives and will be reporting back to the Commission.

By Ali Parker HOLLYWOOD - The City of Hollywood recently received National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Certification as designated Wildlife Habitats for all Hollywood Community Centers, most City parks and several other public spaces (including City Hall). Over 50 City-owned locations were NWF certified through this effort. The Department of Public Services worked with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts to evaluate these locations and the habitat services they provide to local birds, butterflies and other indigenous species. The Community Centers will now all feature metal plaques that proclaim them NWF Wildlife Habitats with a brief description explaining this means the site provides food, water, shelter and places to raise young. The certifications and plaques were paid for with prize money the City's Global Hollywood Network received during the Na-
tional Mayors Conference’s 2011 "Cans for Cash" contest. The NWF is a national non-profit organization that seeks to increase public awareness of the effects of urbanization and other issues on wildlife. In addition to numerous other conservation and education activities, the NWF encourages the creation of "urban oases” for wildlife to help combat the effects of habitat loss. True habitats provide animals with food, water, shelter, and places to raise their young. Hollywood's parks and community centers fulfill these needs primarily through the use of native plants. Native bushes, trees, flowers, and grasses act as "grocery stores" for wildlife by providing then with fresh food such as nectar, seeds, berries, nuts, fruits and more. Native trees, bushes and ornamental grasses also provide shelter from the elements and predators. The variety of trees, bushes, and flowers helps provide a range of
cover and places to raise young. Water is also essential to all living creatures and many of these habitats provide water to wildlife via proximity to the ocean, the Intracoastal Waterway, lakes, canals, or ponds. Water can also be provided via fountains, bird baths, basins, or butterfly "paddling stations.” Migratory birds and butterflies are especially vulnerable to habitat loss because they require stopover (resting) places during their migrations. In addition, many butterfly species will only reproduce on one or two specific plants types. Creating urban wildlife habitats can help these species survive and continue to grace us with their beauty. Certification helps increase awareness about the importance of urban wildlife habitats. Many of our newly certified Community Centers are also holding various events and projects this month in celebration of Earth Day. A Girl Scout
troop at one center is making bird houses to enhance the habitat there, another location is planting additional butterfly sustaining plants, and a third center is organizing their youth to create a special Earth Day display. Several centers are also integrating Earth Day educational activities into their after-care programs. Our Parks and Recreation Department has also worked diligently to enhance City Parks through the installation of additional native plants. Residents who wish to help species impacted by habitat loss are encouraged to evaluate their own yards for the habitat values they provide. Even small balconies can provide habitat value through potted plants, window boxes and fresh water sources. Habitat quality and quantity can be further increased by adding native plants. Home or business owners can also certify their landscapes to help increase awareness

Romeo Et Juliette at Arsht and Broward Centers as Florida Grand Opera season comes to an end Roméo et Juliette is a timeless tragedy of starcrossed lovers, living an impassioned secret affair because of cruel and fierce family rivalries and whose deaths eventually unite their feuding families. Written early in the career of playwright William Shakespeare, set in Verona, the opera begins with a brawl between members of each Montague and Capulet family. It is one of Shakespeare’s most popular stories of young teen age lovers, using many different effects, such as switching between comedy and tragedy. His use of the sub-plots to embellish the story has been praised as an early sign of his dramatic skill. Based on an Italian tale written by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and later retold in “Palace of Treasure” by William Painter in 1582. Roméo et Juliette is a combination of both, with a more extensive plot. The opera belongs to a tradition of tragic romances from long ago. This final production of the season will be Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at the Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House, located at 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami. Coming off an active season for some, there are those who own businesses in Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, North Miami Beach, Aventura, Dania Beach and many of the other areas we reach, who are looking at the reality of closing before the next season gets started. Crazy to see long time restaurants and "mom and pops" having to close their doors because they cannot drop prices any lower. It's happening all over the country. The worst thing in this world is to have a dream, and watch it being dashed - year by year. Holly Marks of Aventura knows that better than anyone. Her Fort Lauderdale eatery had to close after 22 years. Twenty two years of sweat, sacrifice and pouring every waking moment into making her business a success, and while she blames the economy for the downfall, Marks also points to the city and property owners for not helping to promote businesses. "The thing that is crazy about a business like that is you are already starting in a hole with rising taxes and other services that go up yearly," Marks said. "Then, you have to fight to get the city to help promote. Not just me, but others as well. It only helps the city to have a business that stays open and brings people into the community." While Marks is not alone in her fight, the one thing that I have always believed about communities is that if you have an event planned for every weekend during the summer and into the fall, you keep people employed and coming into your area. I look at cities such as Hallandale Beach, with its many strip shopping facilities and top-notch parks, and wonder why there aren't more events to bring people into the community. While the Florida Derby kick-started the flow of people coming into Gulfstream Park and its impressive property, there is still a need to have events in some of those parking lots of these strip facilities. Last fall, Roy Faith from Faith Shopping Center in West Hallandale Beach, attempted to bring in the popular food trucks. While the first time brought in over 10 culinary delights on wheels, there was never a chance to gain any momentum - like other cities do. The city said that you can only hold two of these events during the year. Doesn't make sense to me. When you have a property that has the space to host events, it should be a no-brainer. While Hallandale Beach does have a number of community-oriented events, which are for the residents and not designed to bring in people from 10-15 miles a way, which is the distance many will travel for a marquee event. Ride in any direction of this region and you will see businesses getting ready for the summer, which now starts in late April and runs until Dec. 1. While those six plus months are daunting, I have always believed that we live in the best place in the world - 12 months out of the year. Yes, we have hurricanes, but so does 17 other states. Maybe my thinking comes from the fact that we have first class destinations, so many cultures and an amazing amount of things to do. It's probably natural that people would be flocking here - year round. As I looked through the Sun Times on Thursday, searching through the ads, I wanted to check what our loyal advertisers were doing as the battle to attract customers begin. I was truly impressed with the creativity with specials and making sure that everyone who reads the publication will take advantage of them. While it appears that it will be a long summer, we will continue to spotlight communities for the events they host, and keep an eye on the businesses that continues to make this part of the state so great. This year, the weather turned out to be perfect as thousands came to enjoy this showcase event. For $15, those who came out were treated to as much food as they could consume, and with such tasty dishes from all over the region, it wasn't hard to find something great to eat. "This is a tremendous event," said Donna Goldstein of Hollywood. "We go to a number of these restaurants, so we already know how good the food is." Goldstein wouldn't admit to her favorite place, but hints that she does love the food at DiSalvo's, which is a landmark in this region. Among those foods that everyone had the chance to choose from included Elements Bistro (Crowne Plaza, Hollywood Beach), GGs Waterfront Bar & Grill, SportsZone84.com Bar & Grill, Bravo Supermarket and Mardi Gras' French Quarter Restaurant. By Suzanne Wallace Sun Times NORTH MIAMI BEACH - The City of North Miami Beach is home to a unique new restaurant. Gyro Magic is not your typical PITA/GYRO shop. First of all the decor is contemporary, green and wood tones with black tables and chairs and beige floor tiles. The walls are hung with colorful Disney cells and the over-all ambiance is bright, and clean. A flatscreen TV hangs on the wall to view while dining or you can enjoy the music from a state of the art sound system. The menu that hangs on the wall above the grill is large, colorful and easily read. A tour of the kitchen area impresses you with the newness and cleanliness of the shiny stainless steel grill and hood and the Gyro Machines for the beef/lamb and chicken used in the Gyros and salads. Everything was shiny and clean and the food is excellent. The pitas are the best I have ever tasted. I
wish I could get pitas like that at the grocery. The food is cooked on premises with only the freshest ingredients. Owners George and Sharon have put their heart and soul into the restaurant. George did most of the construction himself. They do most of their own cooking and Sharon says “many of our recipes were family recipes from Greece, handed down to George’s mother and now to us.” His friend
Loukas, born and raised in Greece, is also one of the cooks. George’s story is as unique as his restaurant. He was born in New York where his family was in the restaurant and nightclub business. He moved to Florida and worked at Disney World for three years before moving to New Orleans in 1999 and opening several restaurants and nightclubs. George was there when Katrina hit

WATER CONSERVATION Saving water is saving money in the City of Hallandale Beach The City of Hallandale Beach has teamed with the Broward Water Partnership (BWP) to provide water conservation devices that save water and save the money for
the consumers. Lowflow shower-massage heads, kitchen faucet aerators, low-flow toilet retrofit kits and low-flow hose nozzles are just some of the devices the
REBUILDING TOGETHER Hallandale Beach homes to get a facelift on Apr. 28 Thirteen homes in Hallandale Beach will be getting a facelift during National Rebuilding Day, 2012, Saturday, April 28. Volunteers will meet at 8:30 a.m., at the Austin Hepburn Center, 750 NW 8th Avenue, before being sent to the various homes. The 13 families have been pre-screened and pre-selected by Rebuilding Together Broward County (RTBC). The City of Hallandale Beach has partnered with RTBC to help residents who cannot afford to make necessary home repairs. Some homes are in need of extensive repairs, including roofs; others require minor work to increase safety within the home. “We are so excited to be partnering with Rebuilding Together. There is no greater reward as an elected official than to help facilitate a program in collaboration with the City, community partners, volunteers and homeowners to help our residents with much needed home improvements,” said Mayor Joy Cooper. “It is wonderful to give owners their dream of a safe and beautiful home.” More than 200 homes have been repaired and upgraded during the 12 years RTBC has participated in National Rebuilding Day. This is the first time RTBC is concentrating efforts within the City of Hallandale Beach. “Our strategy of working in a different community each year for National Rebuilding Day has allowed us to widen our impact in Broward County,” said Allan Weiss, RTBC President of the Board of Directors. City is offering free to consumers. This is the fourth year of the project. In the initial year, the South Florida Water management District was a partner, but the program has since been taken over by the City. “In 2006, each person in the City was using 167 gallons of water per day, 167,” said Rafael Perdomo, the City’s Green Initiatives Coordinator, told residents of the Prince George Condominium Association. “Last year, it was 128 gallons per day.” Perdomo has teamed with Abidemi Ajayi to meet with area condominium association boards encouraging the use of the water-saving devices. The two engineers with the City expanded their approach this month and invited condominium residents to learn of the savings. The response was immediate at the Prince George Condominium, 1865 S. Ocean Drive. After learning from board members that the condominium association would install the free water-saving devices at no expense to

the residents, several condominium owners asked for the shower massage heads and toilet retrofit kits. Perdomo said they are taking the program directly to the residents because, “We’re trying to reduce water consumption, and not a lot
of people are taking advantage of this.” As part of the push to conserve water, the City also is offering a landscaping evaluation program for residential communities. The City is scheduling up to four tests per year for Naturescape Irrigation Services to monitor the water flow. The irrigation monitoring is paid for jointly by the City and Broward County. “They will come out and test it, check it and tell you how many gallons you can save,” Perdomo told Prince George Condominium board members. The City and BWP are funding the projects to
conserve water for future generations. Another part of the program is the toilet rebate program where the City and BWP will pay residents up to $100 per toilet to replace older, high-flow toilets with high-efficiency, low-flow units. Add melted chocolate to the egg mixture. Fold in sifted flour, baking powder and salt. Finish with chocolate chips. Place half the brownie mixture into a buttered, floured, and parchment lined 8-inch cake pan. Lay a layer Melba Toast across the whole surface in one even layer. Next, scatter a layer of mini marshmallows evenly across the toast layer. Cover the marshmallows with the rest of the brownie mixture and bake at 325 F for approximately 20 to 25 minutes. Use a toothpick to check if done. Once cool, cut into squares and add a scoop of vanilla Greek frozen yogurt or caramel sauce if desired.

A TASTE OF THE SOUTH Fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and much more FRIED CHICKEN 2-1/2 to 3 pounds fryer chicken, cut into 8-10 pieces 2 cups butter milk 6 egg yolks 2 cups all purpose flour 1/2 sugar less cornflakes (plain) 2 tablespoons of seasoning salt 2 tablespoons garlic 2 tablespoons onion powder 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon poultry season cooking oil for Deep Fryer As always the key to great cooking is preparation and quality ingredients. 1. Wash chicken and pat dry with paper towels. Pour buttermilk into a large bowl. Place chicken into bowl and soak in your refrigerator for about 4 hours. 2. Now it's time to form your mixture. In another large bowl, crush cornflakes well. After crushing cornflakes add flour, seasoning salt, garlic, onion powder, cayenne pepper and poultry seasoning. 3. After about 4 hours remove chicken from the refrigerator. 4. Place egg yolks into a small bowl and beat until smooth. 5. Find yourself a paper or plastic bag that will be used to shake the chicken. Now place enough mixture to coat a piece of chicken into the bag.
1/2 pound. 4. Bake macaroni with cheese at 350 degrees for about 1 hour. The top layer will turn golden brown when the macaroni is ready. Do not allow your mac and cheese to dry out.
6. Dip a single piece of chicken into the egg yolks and then shake the chicken in the mixture. Do this twice for each piece of chicken. Allow your chicken to sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes before frying. 7. Follow the instructions on your deep fryer for preparing and heating your oil. When the oil is ready place your chicken into fryer and cook until done. The chicken should be golden brow, using tongs turn the chicken if necessary. Don't overcrowd the fryer. SMOTHERED PORK CHOPS 4 pork chops, 3/4 to 1 inch thick 1 vidalia or sweet onion, thinly sliced 2 teaspoons seasoned salt 2 teaspoons garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/2 cup self rising flour
1/2 cup vegetable oil 2 cups water As always the key to great cooking is to be prepared and to use quality ingredients. This recipe calls for 4 pork chops because that's about what you can fit into a standard frying pan. I recommend you double the recipe because smothered pork chops are so delicious that you will definitely want to eat leftovers. Start off by giving your pork chops a good rinsing in cold water. Next pat your pork chops dry with paper towels and set aside. In a small bowl form your seasoning mixture by combining and mixing together seasoned salt, garlic powder, black pepper and paprika. Rub about 3/4 teaspoon of seasoning on each pork chop. Next thoroughly coat each piece of meat with flour and set aside. Save all leftover seasoning for later use in onion gravy.
Heat vegetable oil in heavy skillet over medium-high heat. When the skillet is hot enough add pork chops and brown on each side for about three minutes. Once your meat is browned remove it from the skillet and allow to cool on a plate covered with paper towels. Now it's time to form the onion gravy. Without removing any dripping add sliced onions to the skillet and cook until browned. Add remaining flour to the skillet and a very small amount of water if necessary. Stir the onions and flour together until golden brown, paying careful attention not to burn the gravy. Add two cups water to the onion gravy and stir. Bring to a boil over medium high heat. Return pork chops to skillet, reduce heat to simmer, cover and cook for about 1 hour. The meat is done when it's tender. Add additional season to taste if necessary. MACARONI AND
CHEESE 1 box elbow macaroni (about 16 ounces) 1-1/2 pounds shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup whole milk 1 stick butter, unsalted and softened a pinch of salt pepper to taste Cookware and Utensils: 1 large boiling pot 1 baking casserole 1 measuring cup 1. Soften your butter using your microwave. Microwave the butter on low for about 60 to 90 seconds. You only want to soften the butter, therefore check the butter every 10 to 15 seconds to ensure it doesn't melt. 2. Boil your elbow macaroni according to package instructions. 3. Place cooked and drained macaroni in your casserole dish. Add softened butter, milk, pinch of salt, pepper to taste and one pound of shredded cheddar cheese. Gently mix to blend the ingredients. Layer the top of your macaroni with the remaining cheese, about

With potatoes still in sauce pan shake the pan over low heat for several minutes until the potatoes are dry. This is to remove most of the water before adding milk. 5. Add pepper and salt. Then add milk a little at a time, beating mashed potatoes after each addition, until fluffy.

It may not be readily apparent to the person who suffers from it, because the process is often an insidious one. “It can take eight to 10 years before someone with gradual hearing loss becomes aware of it,” says Rick Cox, owner of Audibel Hearing Centers in Hallandale Beach. “Someone else who is close to the person often notices it first.” Subtle signs of hearing loss include needing to turn up the volume of the TV or radio farther than before, having to ask others to repeat what they said, or needing to be closer to someone who is speaking to you. If you do suspect you might be experiencing hearing loss, the first thing to do is to have your condition evaluated by a professional. It may be something that can be treated medically. “Sometimes it’s as simple as wax buildup,” Cox says. “Or it may be an infection of some kind. Then we send the person to an ear, nose and throat doctor.” NEW TECHNOLOGY IS AVAILABLE If, however, you have a loss that requires sound amplification, there is good news. New technology has resulted in devices that are far superior to those of yesteryear. Gone are the large, unsightly hearing aids of the past. “It used to be that appearance was a big reason people refused to get a hearing aid,” Cox says. But now, many of them fit into the ear canal so no one else knows you are wearing one.” Even more important, many of today’s digital hearing aids are designed to adjust automatically to your environment. A modern hearing aid may be able, for example, to perform differently in an intimate, one-toone conversation than it does when you are in a group or in other situations where there

CHOOSING THE RIGHT DEVICE FOR YOU Hearing aids vary in their performance and cost, and to help the patient choose the one that is right for him or her, Cox first asks about lifestyle and habits. “Someone who mostly stays at home may want a different device than someone who has a very active lifestyle,” he notes. Fitting the hearing aid correctly and then making sure it is serving the patient in the best possible way requires time and follow-up. “It’s not just a matter of putting in the hearing aid and sending the person
out the door,” Cox says. “Much of what we do is counseling, and helping the patient get used to the device.” RETRAINING THE BRAIN When a person begins to lose his or her hearing, the brain starts to forget what particular sounds are like, Cox explains. “Then when you get a hearing aid, you are rewiring the brain so it relearns those sounds,” he says. “But because you’re no longer used to the sounds, adjusting to them again may be a very gradual process.” After an initial fitting, an average patient is likely to have a return visit scheduled in one week to see how the
device is performing and how he or she is adjusting. The next follow-up might be two weeks beyond that. “But someone else might need to come back the next day after the first fitting,” Cox says. “We do whatever the person requires to make the process easy and worry-free.” Success with a hearing aid can, in fact, depend on the rapport a patient establishes with the hearing professional. “It’s similar to when you go to your doctor for treatment,” Cox says. “If he or she doesn’t treat you right or doesn’t make you feel valued, you’re not likely to want to go back again.”

It’s not unusual for someone with hearing loss to become depressed and anxious, and to have feelings of isolation. EARLY INTERVENTION IS IMPORTANT It is important to treat hearing loss as early as possible. “People sometimes say, ‘well, I’m not deaf yet, so I don’t need to do anything,’” Cox says. “But when you begin to lose your hearing, it can seriously reduce your ability to communicate with people around you. You may still hear some of what’s being said, but you’re missing bits and pieces. The brain is quick to try to sort things out, but it starts to guess at things, and as that happens more and more, it can make mistakes.” The individual may become withdrawn or even reclusive. “It’s not unusual for someone with hearing loss to become depressed and anxious, and to have feelings of isolation,” Cox says. “Sometimes, he or she may even develop symptoms similar to those of

PROTECT YOUR IDENTITY DAY Hallandale Beach Police Officer Chris Taylor and others talk about how serious this could be to everyone Hallandale Beach Police Officer Chris Taylor addressed a room full of guests attending Protect Your Identity Day at the Hallandale Beach Cultural Center on Saturday, April 14th with some jocular words. “Welcome folks. What does Tiger Woods, Oprah Winfrey and Microsoft founder Bill Gates all have in common?” Everyone shouted out MONEY and lots of it, but only Detective Layne Sauls from the Hallandale Beach Police Department answered the question correctly. They were all victims of identity theft. Detective Sauls stated that identity theft occurs

Also, Sauls recommends limiting your credit card use to point of sales transaction like a restaurant or department store rather than purchasing items via the internet. Officer Taylor reminded the audience to shred their financial documents as thieves show no reluctance to dumpster dive and never click on unsolicited emails on your computer. If you become a victim of identity theft, there are recommended measures to begin immediately. Firstly, cancel your credit cards with the company and file a police report. Next, place a fraud alert with the three major nation-
wide consumer reporting companies that include Experian(1-888-3973742, TransUnion(1800-680-7289) and Equifax(1-800-5256285). Lastly, report the theft to the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877438-4338 or online at ftc.gov/idtheft. Identity theft is a serious crime. People who have their identities stolen can spend months or even years costing thousands of dollars resolving their issues. This can seriously deny you a car loan or mortgage and you could be arrested for a crime that you did not commit.
