There was a time when making your grocery decisions may
have been the easiest choice you could make. Times are changing. No longer are Publix and Winn Dixie the only two options for area shoppers. Like many other businesses around, there are several lower and discounted chains that have started to dot the landscape. For Hollywood resi-

FCAT brings to focus the outstanding education offered in Hallandale Beach
HALLANDALE BEACH - This was FCAT week in every school in the state. Our students and teachers have been all working extremely hard to continue to make amazing strides in education. Hallandale High School has been graded as an A school for the first time since FCAT testing began. They have acutely increased two letter grades from a C to A last year. Like many other stakeholders, I am not a fan of FCAT as a measure for school performance, but it is great to know years of hard work and community partnerships have prevailed. What are equally important are the “whole student” and the other life skills and programs that have had the opportunity to be presented. Over the past 10 years I have made it a point to recognize student achievement at city hall though the Student Citizen of the Month Awards and celebrate our schools. This last month I also took time to recognize students that ranked the highest in volunteer and community service hours in the High School Graduating class. The Nation’s Mayor celebrated a National Day of Service the first

week on April. I decided to focus on our students. Students, at a minimum, must provide 40 hours of community service hours to graduate. The following four students have accumulated 6,000 hours while achieving great grades. The student that accumulated the most hours was Ashley Commertie with 3,177 hours. Thamara Santiago accumulated 1,463, Aisha Lindsey 1,396 and Yoleidys Alfonso 1020. All these young ladies have received high academic honors and are all college bound. They volunteered at city camps, senior homes, day care, church and other organizations. They are true examples of young community leaders and should be an example to everyone. To put it in perspective I have challenged residents to volunteer
one hour a week at our schools. It would take 100 years to even accumulate 6000 hours. These ladies have accumulated 6000 hours over 16 years collectively. It goes to show how once you start helping others the wonderful feeling you get is so rewarding that you keep going back. Commissioner Bill Julian and many Kiwanis volunteers worked to present another Pasta Dinner. The event was very successful and brought out well over 300 attendees to support our local schools. This annual event raises funds to help the principals who quite often dig into their own funds to provide special events and supplies to students. Commissioner Julian will be reporting on how much money was raised and distributing the checks to the principals at our May 1st meeting. General Manager Ron Daniels of Winn Dixie partnered with our Elementary School for a family math night. The entire student body and their families had a chance to learn math while having fun shopping. Hallandale Elementary continues to be an A ranked school. All our schools are celebrating many
other great accomplishments. In addition to celebrating being Boards Principal of the Year, Principal Kingsley shared that 6 Gulf Stream Middle School Students have been awarded full college scholarships in recognition of their academic performance from “Take Stock In Children’’. The school also was invited to participate in the Florida Derby Poster Contest with the winner received an IPOD in a special ceremony in the inner circle. Last Monday Commissioner Sanders and I had a chance to represent our city at a special Zone meeting to kick off the Black Male Success Task Force. While our High School has reached A status, not all students are succeeding. The entire district is focusing on black male graduation rates. The
District goal is to increase the rate by developing strategic plans in each Zone. Mr. Battle has developed a Peer to Peer mentoring program called SWAG. This is a select group of students that dress in business attire and work with other classmates and younger students on life skills and most importantly, setting an example of leadership. The kickoff included breakout sessions where students teach and other stakeholders candidly discussed weaknesses and problems in the current school setting that need to be changed. Beach erosion? April 30 meeting addresses the problem
Beach erosion and how to deal with the problem will take center stage Tuesday, April 30, in a special community meeting and workshop hosted by Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper and City Commissioners at the Hemispheres Condominium, 1985 S. Ocean Drive. The meeting is set to begin at 6 p.m. Commissioners have invited the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Broward County and beach residents to discuss options for funding to repair the beach. Hallandale Beach engineers have been monitoring the beach and evaluating options to repair “hot spots” eroded during the 2012 hurricane season and during recent storms.

markets – once believed to have the monopoly with a majority of shoppers – has dwindled.” Indeed, like gasoline and other goods and services, our local grocery store had to keep up with the rising costs, and because they had so many middle men and high overheads, they had to continue to pass that cost on to us – the consumer. The days of those crowded supermarkets are over. Unless it’s a holiday, most grocery stores have watched a steady decline, and while many have made a strong reputation as being a quality grocer, that is costing several big name markets plenty. As Odalis Perez shopped at the new Okie Dokey Market on N. Federal Highway in Hollywood, she spoke about the need for these lower cost markets that still offer name brands and fresh fruits and vegetables at a much lower cost. When you have six mouths to feed daily, there is simply no other option – as Perez will head to three or four different stores a week in order to save money. “I have always found that if you go to those Costcos, Sams or BJs, and plan to save money, you have to buy in bulk,” Perez said. “I am in a situation where 8-10 gallons of milk a week is the norm when you have four children – 12 to 10 months. It’s things like that when you start searching.” Perez is also a coupon clipper, understanding that everything adds up – and when you have the chance to get something free, it’s something you go right after. There is no getting away from the fact that we are all looking to cut back and save money, and while so much food is wasted each week from spoilage or over-buying, it’s now that we have taken a closer look at how to save and where to shop. In addition to Publix, Winn Dixie and the new and smaller Okie
Dokey markets that have popped up throughout MiamiDade and Broward, there are several other ethnic markets – that while they still carry the familiar products at a cheaper price – also give the consumers an option. From Aldi to Sedanos, Bravo, WalMart and Target, the competition for the grocery dollar is fierce. Wal-Mart has gone as far as taking over older grocery store locations to add a food only market concept to this mix of competition. “It makes sense for many different markets to continue to jump into the war for that food dollar,” said Kerry Myers of Aventura. “Fresh Market, Whole Foods and these farmers markets have also cut into the monopoly that these food giants have long stood over.” While Publix and the more recognizable food stores continue the need to be competitive, lowering prices or offering 2 for 1, it’s those Penn Dutch and President markets – along with the very popular Kosher Kingdom (Aventura) and Laurenzo’s Italian Market in North Miami Beach that continue to sway customers away. Both Kosher Kingdom and Laurenzo's two of our oldest and most loyal advertisers have done very well against the mainstream markets. In fact, they have done well by offering premium items that you cannot find in your average grocery store. The need to be different and perhaps offer the consumer a small part of the weekly grocery list is what has made farmers markets - as well as fruit and vegetable businesses thrive in the war for the food dollar. “The need to be competitive is very important these days,” says Jamie, who runs Jamie’s Garden of Eden (3701 N. 29th Ave., 1 block south of Penn Dutch Grocery Market) in Hollywood. “Advertising in the paper has been huge for us, and when you are open Thursday through Sunday like we are, it’s vital for us to give our customers the very best quality at competitive prices.”

The seven-story, 350space garage at 1747 Van Buren Street opened to the general public for the first time on March 10 for Hollywood's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade & Festival. "And we filled it," said Rob Snyder, the owner of Vizcaya Valet Services, Inc., a full-service parking management company based in Downtown Hollywood. The landmark Hollywood Bread Building, which is owned by downtownbased developer MG3, sits at a prime location across from the ArtsPark at Young Circle. "The garage has never been open to the public," Snyder said. Vizcaya Valet Services, which upgraded the parking facility with a fresh coat of paint and new lighting, offers self-parking on Fridays and Saturdays beginning at 6 p.m. On-site attendants accept the cash-only $7 flat rate and provide security. "If we find there's a need, we'll be open every day," said Snyder, whose Downtown Hollywood clients include Kindred Hospital, Mama Mia Italian Ristorante, La Vendetta restaurant and Perrone's Cucina Italiana. The Hollywood Hills High School Military Academy and McArthur High School JROTC programs were awarded the coveted Honor Unit with Distinction from the U.S. Army Cadet Command. In March, the schools received formal inspection from the U.S. Army and earned the Honor Unit with Distinction rating, ranking them among the very best units in the nation. The Honor Unit with Distinction, or Gold Star status, is the U.S. Army’s highest award given to the best high school JROTC units in the nation. This is obtained by showing excellence in drill and ceremony, cadet knowledge, vigorous inspections and an overall understanding in the JROTC program. Every third year, the Corps of Cadets undergoes a rigorous inspection process by an independent inspection team composed of both commissioned and non-commissioned personnel from the U. S. Army. Members of the U.S. Army’s 6th Brigade Headquarters located in Savannah, Georgia conducted the inspections, which included training documentation, cadet records, physical fitness and drill and ceremony. Cadets were evaluated on their uniforms and drills and were asked questions about JROTC rules and guidelines. Cadets also were evaluated individually on how they performed the duties associated with their rank and job within the JROTC program. Both Hollywood Hills and McArthur JROTC programs exceeded the goal of 576 out of a possible 600 inspection total points and were designated as Honor Units with Distinction. The JROTC programs retain this designation for three years until their next scheduled formal inspection. JROTC programs receiving this distinction also quality to nominate one graduating senior each of the three years to compete for one of 20 nationwide reserved slots for appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Currently, the Broward County School District has over 7,000 students enrolled in JROTC in 29 high schools. Broward County Public Schools is the largest school district in the nation with JROTC in all of its traditional high schools.
Balanchine’s wildly entertaining, “Slaughter On Tenth Avenue,” taken from the Rodgers and Hart Broadway musical hit, “On Your Toes.” Jerome Robbins is best known for West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof. Premiered by the New York City Ballet in 1969, “Dances at a Gathering” is a work for dancers, set to piano music by Frederic Chopin. Robbins began choreographing the ballet as a pas de deux, but was so inspired by the music, he went on to expand it, ending up with a total of eighteen sections, consisting of five female dancers and five male dancers, set apart

by the colors of their costumes. Although the ballet has no specific plot, the tone of the piece is uplifting and is slightly tinged with a Slavic reminiscent of mazurkas and waltzes. “Dances at a Gathering” has been acclaimed as one of the greatest ballets of all time.

Sunday, April 28, 2013 marks the festive Jewish holiday of Lag B’omer. A massive show of Jewish unity and pride will be displayed as the South Florida Jewish community will join celebrations taking place throughout the globe with its own grandiose “Lag B’omer Unity Parade & Fair” at the beautiful newly renovated Gulfstream Park on the corner of US1 in Hallandale. The special event is being held on Sunday, April 28, from 10am-4pm. The parade and fair will commence at 10am with an exciting march-
ing parade featuring colorful Jewish themed floats plus music, marching bands, dancing and juggling clowns. The glamorous parade will begin at the SE corner of Hallandale Beach Blvd and US1 from the Gulfstream Promenade Shopping Center and will march on US1 with unwavering Jewish pride. Thousands to walk with Walgreen to cure diabetes this Saturday
Step by step, Walgreens of South Florida and the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) Foundation are moving toward a cure for diabetes in a partnership that has raised more than $700,000 to date. The third annual Walk with Walgreens Family Fun Day and Health Fair will take place on April 20 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, home to both the Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami (UM) Hurricanes football teams. Additionally, throughout April, “scannables” in the amounts of $1, $5 and $10 will be for sale in Walgreens stores from Port St. Lucie down through the Keys. All proceeds will benefit the Diabetes Research Institute at UM’s Miller School of Medicine. New to the event this year, the Keep Believin’ Half Marathon to Cure Diabetes and a 5K Run, organized by Multirace, will coincide with the Walk. The courses for each will end on the field of Sun Life Stadium, where participants can see their faces on the video board. Activities on the field include: a Gatorade Junior Training Camp with the Miami Dolphins, vintage car show, bounce houses, carnival games, a sand castle exhibition, and much more! A… Cognitive-reconstruction is a reliable, and cost-effective tool for people suffering from low self-esteem, and or selfdefeating behaviors. At its core, cognitive-reconstruction helps identify and change maladaptive thinking and behavior. It also addresses the inner dialogue (we all have) which perpetuates maladaptive beliefs. Here are some very common types of faulty thinking that therapist see regularly and help their clients cognitively reconstruct. 1. Jumping to conclusions, based on an all or nothing black and white thinking processes. (lack of mid-ground thinking). 2. Focusing on negative events and attributes, while ignoring positive ones Example: Relationships stink, they’re just an endless supply of hurt, with little comfort. 3. Catastrophizing events and experiences, while also generalizing one’s problems as lifelong and irreversible (again lack of a middle ground)…Example: It’s not just that my girlfriend broke up with me, but no one is ever going to want me again. I never did, and never will find true love. 4. Inappropriately labeling one’s self or others… Example: I’m a loser…, or “they’re all gold diggers”. 5. Disproportionably blaming ones self or others for unsuccessful outcomes (again lacking middle ground)….. Example: It’s all my fault. I did everything wrong, or it’s all her fault, she did everything wrong. A proficient cognitive-behavioral therapist will attempt to re-frame the client’s thoughts and verbalization to possibly something like this: 1. Love has both ups and downs. Maybe the next time I will experience more of the ups and less of the downs. 2. Just because my girlfriend broke up with me does not mean I will never find someone to love again. 3. I am not a loser. Relationships are not about winning or losing 4. Perhaps we both had some fault to why the relationship didn’t last. As you can see, cognitive reconstruction is simply helping one look at things from a different angle…, in a more positive and functional way….It’s really a simple concept, but right to the point, and one that a skilled therapist can use effectively for many people. PREVENTING PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE (NewsUSA) - For teens, peer pressure or wanting to escape emotional stress can often lead to prescription drug experimentation, which in turn can lead to abuse, addiction and sometimes a drug overdose. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 70 percent of children age 12 and older say they got prescription drugs, not from a drug dealer, but from a friend or relative. "Each day, more than 2,000 teens begin abusing prescription medications, believing that doctor-prescribed medicine is safer to experiment with than illegal drugs," says Steve Pasierb, president and CEO of The Partnership at Drugfree.org. "Parents and grandparents take great pains to prevent poisoning in young children by keeping household chemicals out of the reach," according to Pasierb. "The same approach needs to be taken to safeguard medications in the home." The first step is to get informed about the dangers and know how to intervene. The website www.RxSafetyMatters.org provides information to parents and community groups on how to prevent prescription drug abuse. TIPS FOR PARENTS INCLUDE: * Learn to recognize the signs of abuse. of the Protect the Paws, which is affiliated with the Humane Society of New Jersey. The Humane Society of New Jersey and its affiliates have presented more than 1,000 canine vests around the country, Ms. Holmes said. “The vests cost $828 each,” said Ms. Holmes. “They are made by Protective Products of Sun-
rise.” Local officers learned of the local organization after seeing an article in the Police Benevolent Association (PBA) newsletter. They contacted Protect the Paws and asked for help in securing protection for the two team members. “I started a donation drive and several Hallandale Beach busi-

GreenFest 2013 was a huge success
Youngsters join Mayor Joy Cooper and Hallandale Beach Public Works staff in planting a live oak sapling at the Cultural Community Center during the annual GreenFest 2013 festivities on Saturday, April 6. As part of the City’s annual observance of Arbor Day, a young tree is planted on City property. In recent years, the tree has been planted during GreenFest. Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue ‘Apparatus Housing Ceremony’
Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue added a new $254,000 rescue unit to the fleet this month in a traditional “Apparatus Housing Ceremony” at Station 7, 121 SW 3rd Street. The ceremony involves fire personnel pushing the new unit into the station, a tradition started when fire units were horsedrawn. In early days, the fire units had to be backed into the station so horses could be hooked up and pull the unit to the scene of an emergency. Following the tradition in modern times, the fire rescue equipment is pushed into the station before fire administrators place the unit in service. Members of the City’s “B” shift battalion pushed the rescue unit into the bay. The City currently has five rescue units to protect City residents. cup of beans from stew, mash in a bowl with potato masher or fork. Add mashed beans to stew; stir to thicken. Remove ham and dice. Remove bay leaves and red pepper, if used and discard. Add diced meat and green pepper to beans. Cover and simmer 15 minutes. Serve beans over fluffy white rice.
STUFFED EGGPLANT 3 medium sized eggplants 1/2 lb ground chuck or round (*) 1-1/2 cups minced onions 6 Tbsp butter 3 cups herbed bread stuffing 1-1/2 cup milk (**) Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste Parmesan cheese (optional)
Saute the onion in the butter in a 9" skillet for a few minutes, until onions are slightly translucent. Add the ground beef or turkey, and cook, stirring constantly, for about 10 minutes. Cut the eggplants in half lengthwise. Scoop the center out and reserve for the filling, leaving 1/4" around the skin. Boil the skins at medium high heat for about 5 minutes. Place skins on a cookie sheet and drain them on several layers of paper towels. Add to the skillet the reserved eggplant centers and cook until tender. Remove it from heat and while piping hot, add 1-1/2 cup bread stuffing, seasonings and milk (**). Let it cool for 10 minutes. Fill the eggplant skins with this mixture, being very careful not to break them. Sprinkle with the rest of the herbed bread stuffing and parmesan cheese. Preheat oven to 400oF and bake the stuffed eggplants for about 20 minutes.
