LIVE SUMMER RACING Usually, when May rolls around, I pull out my column and start to write that feel good, inspirational piece that is designed to motivate the businesses in our community. I guess it comes a few weeks earlier this year. Last week, Hallandale Beach Commissioner Bill Julian asked me about that very column. Florida officials approved requests by Calder Race Course and Gulfstream Park to allow both tracks to begin year-round racing starting on July 1. Art and Culture Center of Hollywood Offers Summer Arts Camp Programs for Ages 6-18
HOLLYWOOD – For the first time, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood will offer as part of its Summer Arts Camp a one-week Hip Musicians’ Percussion Groove program in addition to its popular Young Actor/Young Artists and Broadway Actors/Broadway Actors Advanced sessions. All of the visual, performing, and interdisciplinary programs allow children and youth to practice the skills they have learned while preparing for final exhibitions/performances. Here is a look at the Center’s summer camp programs: • “Young Actors and Young Artists Series” kicks off on Monday, June 10. Parents may choose between half-day (9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m.) and full-day (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) sessions of this popular weekday camp, where students, ages 6 to 12, can create a variety of art projects and learn the fundamentals of movement and drama. Participants may register for one or all of the camp’s five two-week sessions (for a total of 10 weeks). These classes take place at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s Arts School, 1626 Harrison St. Each session culminates with a final performance or exhibition for family and friends. Cost per session: $300 members/$325 non-members for half day, or $400 members/$425 non-members for all day. • “Broadway Actors” occurs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The first four-week session begins Monday, June 10. In this camp, students ages 8 to 15 study acting, voice, movement, improvisation, costume design, set design, and technical design. Camp participants also gain skills in character development, projection, articulation, creative thinking, problem solving, concentration, sketch design, and artistic creation. Each session culminates with a “Junior Broadway” production for the public at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, located at 1770 Monroe St. (U.S. 1 and Monroe Street). Cost per session: $750 members/$800 non-members. The dates for this year’s “Broadway Actors” camps are as follows: • Session 1: June 10 – July 5 (No class on July 4) Featured Show: “Annie” Performance at 5 p.m. on July 5 • Session 2: July 15 – Aug. 9 Featured Show: “The Little Mermaid”Performance at 5 p.m. on Aug. 9 • “Broadway Actors Advanced” takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. This four-week camp begins Monday, June 10 for students ages 12 to 18 who have previously attended a Broadway Actors session or have had previous performing experience. Students will hone their skills and take their performance to the next level. This camp takes place in the dance studio at the Arts Park at Young Circle, located at U.S. 1 and Hollywood Boulevard. Cost: $750 members/$800 non-members. The show for “Broadway Actors Advanced” camp is “Grease, School Edition,” which takes place at 1770 Monroe St. at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 6. All classes follow State Standards used in Florida public schools. Camp prices range from $225 to $800 per session per child. There are a number of partial scholarships available for qualifying families. Awards are given on a first-come, first-served basis and may not be available for all sessions. "They understand that when things are tough during the summer months, you have to give something back. We have created our summer advertising specials to make sure that our customers - new and old - can stay above water with lower prices." If you read my column each week, you know how much of a homer I am when it comes to doing everything and anything possible to get that flow started in the economy. That is why many local businesses continue to run specials that will create that traffic and bring on that confidence spending that all of us have been talking about. To me, the summer months have always been the focal point of any community. That is where your residents look up to local politicians and those who plan and promote different events to create positives within the city. While many cities take advantage of the summer - with outdoor festivals and other things to create that rush into the city, many slow things down and do little planning during May, June, July or August. That to me, is not the way for positive results. "I have long been one of those people who push for more community-oriented events," said Julian. "I think it becomes vital to any city to have things going on year round. You never know who will see a restaurant or specialty shop on that initial visit to your city. They will always come back." Aventura, North Miami Beach, Sunny Isles Beach, Hollywood, Dania Beach and in Hallandale will be hot, and as usual, many will struggle to stay afloat. But if you have experience at surviving the five and six months without the large crowds, you will come out in November and December with the knowledge that you have become a year round destination. "The tourists have come and gone for the 35 years I have lived in Hollywood," said Raquel Peterson. "You just have to be smart, understand
that the financial climate is not the best ever and move on, accordingly." Indeed, with rising gas prices, and goods and services going through the roof, it is always wise to look for businesses who understand what you are dealing with. CRA continues to provide many programs to address blight

Hallandale Beach CRA continues to provide many programs to address blight. Last month the CRA Board of Directors adopted the CRA Annual Report for 2012. The report highlights the CRAs utilization of the CRA Trust to address the distressed conditions within the CRA during 2012. Keeping with the goals of comprehensively addressing slum, blight and crime prevention has been a main focus. The CRA has contracted with the police department in multiple strategies to address crime. The result was 4.1% crime reduction and over 696 youths received training or intervention. In addition to these programs, the CRA partnered with the Hepburn Center to provide employment services to 140 individuals. The CRA has also provided multiple grants to Nonprofit Agencies that provided many types of services to enhance the quality of life within the CRA. These programs promote job creation, provide job training and court diversion; to name a few. Through agencies including Phileo Outreach Ministries, Lampkins Creative Arts, Mt. Everet Resource Center, Palms
The CRA has directed Executive Director Renee Crichton Miller to amend our CRA plan based on a day long visioning session with the Board of Directors. The plan will be amended to focus on two main strategies. The first is to make tangible capital improvements that create cohesive visual appeal within all areas of the CRA. The second will be to promote projects with large scale impacts.

Center for the Arts and Palms Community Action Coalition, over 294 residents and youths were served. The CRA also continually invests in “Bricks and Mortar” projects. Through a public-private partnership, the CRA closed on 29 Affordable Housing Units and completed a rehab of 8 foreclosed townhomes. The CRA is in the process of completing crosswalk upgrades for handicap accessibility and establishing a way finding system in the CRA Area. The CRA budgeted $500,000 to rehabilitate 1st Avenue. The design of this project was approved last month and is currently being implemented. The CRA Neighborhood and Business Improvement programs continue to be very
successful. The CRA provides loans and grants to upgrade properties throughout the CRA. The CRA BOD has been focusing on the next 13 years of the CRA. Over the next years we will be expediting the upgrades of public right of ways throughout the entire CRA area. The CRA will not lose focus of the various programs, so we can continue to maintain the progress we have made. The BOD added two items to the list: NIP that will be eligible for grant/loan assistance; seawall and backyard restoration and security enhancements. The CRA Board and the City of Hallandale Beach are also providing grant opportunities to non- profits that address the goals of our city and CRA. Applications became available Monday, April 1, 2013, online at www.cohb.org or at the following locations; Cultural Community Center and Austin Hepburn
Center. The application deadline is Monday, May 13, 2013 at 4:00 pm (no exceptions and they must be time stamped by Staff.) The final CRA plan will be brought back to the board when complete.
GREEN TIP This past Saturday, the City and Hallandale Beach Chamber of Commerce host the Annual Green Fest. For the past five years the event has focused on educating residents of all ages on the importance of conservation. This month marks the celebration of many programs; Arbor Day Earth Day and Water Conservation Month. The celebration continues all month.

Sidewalk Art Project Puts the ‘fun’ in Functional

HOLLYWOOD The City of Hollywood will soon be reaching out to residents to help get involved in designing sidewalk art for six sections of sidewalk that will be installed throughout the City. Its part of an Art of Community Grant Hollywood applied for and received from the Community Foundation of Broward. The idea behind the grant is to impact issues of public concern through a collaborative civic engagement project using the arts. A report by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in partnership with Gallup showed “a significant connection exists between residents’ levels of emotional attachment to their community and its economic growth.” Shared meaningful experiences are an effective tool to connect people and create a sense of pride for, and attachment to, their community. City staff has worked to identify areas of highest need
areas within the community to install, replace or repair sidewalks. The grant requires the City to work with the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood to develop the artistic components for each section of sidewalk. The City will help coordinate a series of meetings throughout the City where residents can meet with the artist and share their ideas for the section of sidewalk closest to their neighborhood. The project will culminate with the installation of the artwork and sidewalk coinciding with a community unveiling. Hollywood residents have shown their interest in improving their City. Last year more than 300 residents participated in the City’s first ever Great Neighborhoods Challenge making investments and improvements in their properties and competing for grants to improve a public space in their neighborhood. FORT LAUDERDALE - The waterfront Fort Lauderdale home of Marti and Wayne Huizenga was the lovely location again this year for PAWS’ Tea in the Garden to benefit the Humane Society of Broward County. Chairs Bonnie Muxo and Jamie Stiles were delighted with the March event’s sold-out status, and equally thrilled with the resulting sum of $41,000 raised! Arriving guests were greeted with flutes of champagne, as well as an adorable host of adoptable puppies and an Adoption Ambassador dog – all looking for forever homes. A Chinese auction also tempted attendees with the lovely items that were offered. As they mingled, guests browsed a selection of hats by Barbi Brunton and jewelry by Pamela Huizenga Jewelry; these sponsors’ hats and jewelry were also featured in a fashion show later in the afternoon, and both donated a portion of their proceeds to PAWS. Models for the fashion show were kindly provided by Betty’s Model Group. While being serenaded by harp music, tea party attendees moved outdoors to a beautiful garden setting. Once seated, they enjoyed a selection of tea sandwiches, scones and other treats. An assortment of teas was also served. The lades at Tea in the Garden wore beautiful and unique hats, all vying for the “most fabulous hat” prize – which was awarded to Michelle DiMarco for her glamorous topper. Live racing will really help Gulfstream more than any other facility. The idea of having people coming there in the summer truly helps with the many businesses and restaurants that need that economic boost. The move to summer racing enhances that those restaurants and man specialty shops will have a better economic summer. "There is plenty of optimism going around this facility," said tenant Mike Russo. "Just to have a few days with extra people coming here is enough to get through those long, hot months." Russo believes that Gulfstream and its property will benefit for years to come. The very fact that ownership recognizes that there are so many year round businesses that need that help is something that keeps everyone moving forward. "I know they try and bring different things into this facility," Russo pointed out. "Anything that would drive traffic to some of our businesses in here is always a plus." Gulfstream will hold racing on weekends only from July 1 to Nov. 30; Fridays through Sundays Dec. 6 to Dec. 14; four days a week for the following three weeks, and five days a week through March 30 during the winter season. Gulfstream Thoroughbred After Racing Program Inc., a company owned by Gulfstream Park, also received approval for a permit to race Quarter Horses on June 30 and July 1. Horsemen report the permit was obtained
only to qualify for an additional casino license if expanded gambling legislation passes in the county. HANDLE RECORD SMASHED - AGAIN Gulfstream Park will end its meet Friday setting records in both total handle and on-track handle for the third consecutive meet. Gulfstream's total handle will be approximately $769 million, up nine percent from $673 million in 2011-2012. Meanwhile, on-track handle will be approximately $63 million, up 22 percent from 2011-2012 when on-track handle surpassed the $50 million mark for the first time in Gulfstream's new facility. "We're thankful to our

Viola & Piano Unite in Grand Finale Concert at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, Sunday April 21st AVENTURA - On Sunday April 21 at 5P.M. the unique Classical Sundays at Five series comes to a spectacular close with the extraordinary violist Michael Klotz and acclaimed pianist Kemal Gekic. The Classical Sundays at Five concert experience brings the tradition of the salon concerts of the 19th century back to life, allowing artist and audience to know each other on a deeper level than ever before. By breaking the barrier between artist and audience through a guided tour of the program and artist insights, a new level of intimacy between performer and spectator is achieved. This will not be the first time these two highly acclaimed artists have joined forces. Klotz, the violist with the Amernet String Quartet (Ensemble in residence at FIU) and Gekic (Artist in Residence at FIU) have had the opportunity to collaborate on several chamber projects in the past, but this will be the first time with just the two musicians in a program that features works that showcase this unique pairing of instruments. Michael Klotz made his solo debut with the Rochester Philharmonic at the age of 17. He has also appeared as soloist with the Miami Symphony, Eastman Philharmonia, Mannes Bach Festival Orchestra, Bowdoin Festival Orchestra, and the World Youth Symphony in London, England. Kemal Gekic has graced the stages of the Miami International Piano Festival since his US debut at the second annual Festival in 1999 which ultimately led to his appointment as Artist in Residence at FIU. Since then

The duo will perform works by Vivaldi’s Sonata in B flat Major, Ernest Bloch’s Suite Hebraique which was written for violin or viola with versions for orchestra and piano. It draws on traditional Jewish sources, such as the sound of the shofar's call, as Bloch explored his Judaic heritage. In addition Maria Theresia von Paradis’ Sicilenne and Fritz Kreisler’s Toy Soldier’s March will be performed. Klotz & Gekic have selected the pieces typically performed by viola and piano. Zoetic stage brings their season at Arsht Center to a close with ‘The Savannah Disputation’

This wonderfully funny and thought-provoking play, features a great creative cast that will entertain any audience with its humorous debate on faith and belief. The production of “The Savannah Disputation” shows how the irrational idea of trying to bully others into accepting one’s beliefs which is portrayed in a very hilarious manner. The scene takes place in a home on Duffy Street near Skidaway, Savannah, Georgia. Two extremely feisty Catholic sisters, Mary and Margaret, find themselves in a verbal downright disagreement when Melissa, a young persistent Pentecostal missionary, who appears on their doorstep and is asking Mary whether she has been saved. She answers in the affirmative and sends her on her way with some harsh words. Later she regrets she didn’t ask her to return, in order to slam the door in her face once more. Her wish is granted, only this time Margaret, more good natured, invites her into their home, only to be warned by the missionary, that the sisters are idol-worshiping heathens who will burn forever. To rebuke the missionary and expose this deluded young lady, the sisters engage the help of their unsuspecting parish priest, Father Murphy, setting the stage for a real hysterical theological showdown to prove what it means to truly

Bad Company former lead singer Brian Howe comes to Mardi Gras, Apr. 23
As one of rock's legendary voices, Brian Howe exploded onto the scene when he partnered up as lead vocalist with multi-platinum artist Ted Nugent for the 1983 album, Penetrator. As the front man of Nugent's live show, the album’s tour took Howe around the globe – his first opportunity to share his killer rock vocals internationally, and it wouldn't be long before the world would take notice of Howe’s ascension to super-stardom with his next venture Bad Company. After 5 albums in as many years, and frequent touring, Bad Company wrapped up the 70's in a decline. At this point the band decided to take some time off which proved to be professionally disastrous. Maybe it was a new decade, and a new wave of artist, the importance of MTV, or simply that the band could not find its stride again As one of rock's legendary voices, Brian Howe exsince their last successes in the 70's. Whatever the ploded onto the scene when he partnered up as lead reasons, the group wound up releasing the album vocalist with multi-platinum artist Ted Nugent. On Tuesday, April 23, he will give a free concert in the Rough Diamonds in 1981 which continued their Grandstand at 8 p.m. downward spiral, resulting in the band performing at much smaller venues and consequently, the departure of Paul Rodgers - leaving remaining members to re-evaluate the group's future. Enter Brian Howe - Bad Company courted Brian to take the helm as lead vocalist in 1984. He accepted the offer, launched the group back into sold out arena tours, and the rest is history. Subsequently, Brian created, wrote, recorded and toured with Bad Company for the next ten years, headlining every major venue around the globe. In 1991 Brian Howe was reunited once again with Ted Nugent when Damn Yankees were brought on to support Brian and Bad Company in what was credited as one of the top 5 grossing tours of that year. In addition to Bad Company's highly acclaimed, (and long–awaited) 1993 live CD What You Hear Is What You Get - The Best of Bad Company – Live, Brian wrote and sold 19 million additional albums highlighted by such radio and MTV music video hits as Holy Water, If You Needed Somebody, No Smoke Without A Fire and How About That. FORT LAUDERDALE - The Humane Society of Broward County’s Adoption Ambassador Program, in conjunction with the ASPCA, has reached a milestone with 117 dogs being adopted, since the first dog was placed with an Adoption Ambassador in late August of 2012. Being an Adoption Ambassador is a lot like fostering, but goes a step further. Ambassadors “market” the dogs through social media, going to events, making flyers and posting at work, and networking with their friends and family. The dog’s photo also remains on the Humane Society of Broward County’s website and dogs in the program are identified with a border around their picture. In addition, each dog is fitted with a bright orange vest that says “Adopt Me” so that while they are out-and-about with their temporary families others will know the canine is looking for forever home. The Ambassadors interview potential adopters and complete all necessary paperwork once the perfect home is found. Currently there are 54 active Ambassador Families including 22 which are Teens Ambassadors. (Teens can earn their required high school community service hours for participating in the program.) The average stay for a dog with an Ambassador Family is just 22 days, but for some dogs it was shorter…there have been eight dogs that were adopted by their Ambassador Families. Next, the tooth root implant, which is a small post made of titanium, is placed into the bone socket of the missing tooth. As the jawbone heals, it grows around the implanted metal post, anchoring it securely in the jaw. The healing process can take from six to 12 weeks. Once the implant has bonded to the jawbone, a small connector post -called an abutment -- is attached to the post to securely hold the new tooth. To make the new tooth or teeth, your dentist makes impressions of your teeth, and creates a model of your bite (which captures all of your teeth, their type, and arrangement). The new tooth or teeth is based on this model. A replacement tooth, called a crown, is then attached to the abutment. Instead of one or more individual crowns, some patients may have attachments placed on the implant that retain and support a removable

Because the implant is secured within the jawbone, the replacement teeth look, feel, and function just like your own natural teeth. HOW PAINFUL ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS? Most people who have received dental implants say that there is very little discomfort involved in the procedure. Local anesthesia can be used during the procedure, and most patients report that implants involve less pain than a tooth extraction. Mount Sinai Medical Center Achieves Positive Net Income for the Fourth Consecutive Year
MIAMI BEACH - For the fourth year in a row, Mount Sinai Medical Center’s mission-driven operations have brought positive earnings and reinforced the medical center’s strong image as a healthcare leader and community resource. Mount Sinai’s 2012 net revenues were $497.1 million in 2012, up from $484.9 million in the prior year, representing a 2.5 percent increase. This is due to an increase in cardiac-related procedures, outpatient surgical volume and emergency department visits on the hospital’s Miami Beach and Aventura campuses. The Mount Sinai Heart Institute, a partnership with New York’s Columbia University, continued to produce strong cardiac surgical volume by capturing the largest market share of all cardiac surgeries in Miami-Dade, as well as the largest market share of cardiac valve and bypass surgeries in South Florida. In addition, diagnostic cardiac catheterization and angioplasty procedures increased by 6.9 and 12.9 percent, respectively, as compared to the prior year. The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) data shows that Mount Sinai continues to be the area’s leader in cardiovascular care. Mount Sinai has the best cardiac surgical outcomes in Florida among adult hospitals that perform more than 600 cases. In addition, Mount Sinai’s chief of cardiac surgery, Dr. Joseph Lamelas, performs the most heart valve surgeries in Florida. Mount Sinai also offers patients the best heart attack survival rate in the state, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare data. Mount Sinai’s emergency room visits increased by 5.1 percent, or 3,091 visits, as compared to the prior year, driven by the freestanding emergency room in Aventura, which showed a 5.8 percent increase in visits. The Miami Beach campus’ emergency room showed a 4.9 percent increase in visits. Additionally, Mount Sinai’s satellite facilities in Hialeah, Coral Gables and Key Biscayne experienced continued outpatient growth. Mount Sinai Hialeah and Mount Sinai Key Biscayne experienced a 77 and 18 percent growth, respectively, from the prior year. The Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only oncology program in Florida to receive the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) Outstanding Achievement Award three consecutive times. Mount Sinai was also the first hospital in South Florida to receive accreditation in radiation oncology by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). The ACR-ASTRO seal of accreditation represents the highest level of quality and patient safety. Fewer than 10 percent of radiation oncology programs nation-wide are accredited. The medical center continues to be a leader in lifesaving research and remains committed to its teaching program, training more than 166 residents and fellows in 19 medical specialties. Mount Sinai also serves as the training ground for 342 allied health students and 577 student nurses. BACON GUACAMOLE GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH A buttery and toasty grilled cheese sandwich stuffed with cool and creamy guacamole, crispy bacon and melted jack and cheddar cheese. The crunchy crumbled tortilla chips in this grilled cheese pay tribute to the classic combination of tortilla chips and guacamole dip. 2 slices bacon 2 slices sour dough bread 1 tablespoon butter, room temperature 1/2 cup jack and cheddar cheese, shredded 2 tablespoons guacamole, room temperature 1 tablespoon tortilla chips, crumbled (optional) Directions 1. Cook the bacon until crispy and set aside on paper towels to drain. 2. Butter one side of each slice of bread, sprinkle half
of the cheese onto the unbuttered side of one slice of bread followed by the guacamole, bacon, tortilla chips, the remaining cheese and finally top with the remaining slice of bread with the buttered side up. 3. Grill over medium heat until golden brown and the cheese has melted, about 23 minutes per side. BUFFALO CHICKEN CLUB Grilled chicken breast covered is buffalo hot sauce in a club sandwich with tangy blue cheese. 4 small chicken breasts 1 teaspoon paprika alt and pepper to taste oil for the grill 1/2 cup hot sauce (such as Frank's Red Hot) 2 tablespoons butter, melted 4 buns 8 strips bacon, cooked (optional) 1/2 cup blue cheese, crumbled
