Aventura Summer Camp Registration AVENTURA - Hot summer days are on the way! The City of Aventura is holding summer camp from June 11 through August 17, 2012. Campers will participate in games, activities, arts & crafts, swimming, special events and exciting field trips. Camp Discovery will be open to children ages 5-8 and Camp Explorer will be available for children ages 9-14. The resident fee for the 10 week program is $1,120 and weekly registration packages are available. Resident registration begins on Monday, March 12 and non-resident registration on Monday, March 26 pending availability. ‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’ A1A landscape improvements taking shape

Mayor Joy Cooper FDOT has almost completed the A1A landscape improvements. This portion of improvements is only one phase of a total safety and rehabilitation project in partnership with FDOT and Broward County. The landscape project design under the bridge is still being reconsidered. Due to the high volume of storm water from the bridge, runoff is eroding the surface and impacting the stability of the plantings. Staff is working with the FDOT contractors to address this concern. Planning and design of the second phase is underway. This will include crosswalk safety lighting resurfacing and bike lanes. The project will match the Hollywood A1A project north of our city that was completed over the past years. This portion of the project was delayed due to state funding cutbacks. Even though we protested the delay, FDOT was able to expand the project and include more amenities. BUS SHELTERS REPLACEMENT PROGRAM Many residents have inquired about bus shelters along this roadway and throughout the city. The city is in the process of replacing many of our bus shelters and looking to add locations. The one key problem with the replacements and new locations is acquiring enough right of way necessary to accommodate handicap accessibility. One shelter in front of Hemispheres beachside was completed.

The west side stop is planned for a shelter. The City is working with the condominium to acquire right of way. The shelters that were removed along 14th Avenue are also scheduled to be replaced after the major drainage project is complete. We encouraged condominiums to work with Staff to locate bus benches and shelters. HALLADALE BEACH PARTNERS WITH MEMORIAL SENIOR PARTNERS On Monday, February 20th, many residents reached out to me very concerned about losing the Seniors Partners Programs at Memorial Center on Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Memorial was not renewing their lease at the shopping center and was moving to Hollywood Beach Cultural Center. After I heard about the move the City offered the use of our Cultural Center to Memorial Senior Partners. This location will ensure programs will be more accessible to our Hallandale Beach seniors over 50 years of age. The center has plenty of parking and our free mini bus system connects directly to the complex. Over the past two months card games, bingo and Mahjong have been offered at our center and Staff is working with Memorial to establish the balance of programs.

PALMS COMMUNITY ACTION COALITION WORKS TO ENSURE JOBS STAY LOCAL Palms Community Action Coalition was created by local residents after Hallandale Beach Weed and Seed federal funding was completed. DOJ cut all Weed and Seed funding. Over

the past years, Weed and Seed worked collaboratively with City, Police Department and local residents to address crime and create opportunities for job creation and community programs to enhance the quality of life in the Palms. PCAC became a nonprofit last year and has since been working on the Foster Community Center construction project and planning for the grand opening. Over the course of construction, PCAC has worked to perform outreach to local vendors, contactors and tradesmen to secure work on the construction of Foster Park. Recreational Design and Construc-

tion RDC was awarded the contract to build the center. Part of the agreement was a community benefit package with the promises a percentage of all work would be done locally with local vendors and labor. Through PCAC efforts, over 70 workers applied for work including a local food vendor. RDC has hired 100% local contractors and continues to hire local workers. GREEN TIP Hallandale Chambers GREEN Leadership Organization is planning the fourth annual GREEN FEST on Saturday May 5th. There will be planned events including demonstrations and dialogues

on how you can save money going green, kid’s corner, vendors, fruit tree give away and more. The City will also be hosting the Beautification Awards and the Advisory Boards annual Arbor Day Poster Contest. The Parks Department is hosting a trash to art contest. Local 7-on-7 football team getting the star treatment By Stephen Cummings South Florida has been responsible for developing many high school football players who division one college coaches covet to fill their rosters. Besides the three major powerhouses within the “Sunshine State” that include Florida State, University of Florida and the University of Miami who compete earnestly for bragging rights each year, young promising gridiron stars attend Ohio State, Oklahoma, Louisville, Auburn, Michigan and the University of West Virginia which run some of the most competitive programs in the nation. Credit local financial advisor Brett Goetz who is the founder of the South Florida Express travel team that is comprised of 48 of the most outstanding high school football players in Dade and Broward County. Goetz is an alumnus of both Miami Beach High School and the University of Florida and had the vision to assemble a group of promising players five years ago after his past involvement with the North Shore/Nor Isle Optimists program . The players compete in flag football and their talents are showcased by film to coaches across the country. Goetz commented that he receives great assistance from some notable named coaches bringing recognition to his players that increase the opportunities for athletic scholarships. Renee Crichton has been selected to become the next City Manager for the City of Hallandale Beach upon retirement of the current City Manager. As City Manager, this will be the first leadership role for the Miami Gardens Deputy City Manager who started her management career in Hallandale Beach. Ms. Crichton, 35, joined the City of Hallandale Beach in 2000 as Assistant to the City Manager, and since

Funds are available to nonprofit and community based organizations that target the City’s priority areas. The City will announce the grant and mini-grant recipients in October 2012. This is the second-year of a new grant application process. It will be explained in a community grant workshop 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, at the Hallandale Beach Cultural Community Center, 410 SE 3rd Street. All applications for grants or mini-grants will be processed by the City’s Human Services Department, located at the Austin Hepburn Center, 750 NW 8th Avenue. The City will be accepting requests for funding through 4 p.m., Monday, May 7, at the Hepburn Center only. All applications must be complete when submitted. Applications submitted or received after 4 p.m., May 7, will not be accepted nor considered. There will be no exceptions. Organizations may submit only one funding request, either a grant or a mini-grant application, not both. Submittals must be in person, or by mail. If the application is submitted by mail, it must be received prior to the deadline. No facsimiles or email applications will be accepted or reviewed. To qualify for a grant in excess of $5,000, the project must address Education, Workforce Development (job creation), Cultural arts, or Health and Wellness needs within the City. Unlike the grants, there is no requirement that mini-grants target specific underserved areas. However, potential uses for mini-grants include, but are not limited to: Educational Programs, Matching Grant Funds Capacity Building, Sponsorship, Cultural Arts, Training, Health and Wellness, and General Operating. The grants come with restrictions. Prohibited uses of the grant and minigrant money include: Capital Campaigns, Fundraising Events, Political Activities, Honorariums for Guests, Grants to Individuals, Emergency Funding, or Religious Activities. Anger Management In response to some questions I have received regarding anger issues, and anger management, I have written the following article. To cover the entire field of anger management in one article is impossible, so I have picked two of the most important: Displacement of anger”, and “Assertiveness training”… John P has a very abusive and hostile boss. Today was particularly bad as John’s boss told him he was not worth his pay, and insinuated that if his love life was like his work his wife would never end up having a child… John is too frightened to confront his boss’s snide and inappropriate comments, and instead goes home dejected, and steaming mad. He enters his home, where his wife is busily cooking, and asks “what’s for dinner”?. She responds “chicken”, and John goes into another of his many rages… “Chicken again…, Chicken again?... Can’t you think of anything different?...Your cooking stinks, and your chicken is the worst of it. You’re lucky I put up with this!... You’re not worth two dead flies!!!”. The above is a classic example of anger displacement, and projection. Projection is basically identifying onto others the unwanted feelings we have of our selves… Displacement of anger involves directing anger onto something or someone that is not the true source of the anger…John is not really mad at his wife, but he is afraid to confront his boss. Now both he and his wife are angry & miserable, proving once again: “What comes around goes around”. Is there a solution here, other than John quitting his job or his wife leaving him?... Yes there is. Anger management therapy might help John and his wife tremendously, especially in the area known as “assertiveness training”. Assertiveness training helps one understand

derstandable, and even justifiable human emotion, but it can be a great help to those who do not process anger well…. (ARA) - Hand sanitizer, flu shots and regular exercise are just some of the ways Americans build their immunity to protect themselves from harmful bacteria and illness. But many may be missing a simple step for preventing health problems. There's nothing like a nice hot shower to remove dirt and grime. But showerheads are moist, warm, and dark, and those that spray hard water are especially ripe for bacterial growth. In fact, newly published research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicated that showerheads that sprayed hard water had a prevalence of bacteria linked to pulmonary, or lung-related, disease. The study reported the results of showerheads analyzed across nine U.S. cities. Just as Americans take other preventative measures to protect themselves from airborne illnesses, there's a simple way to ensure your show-

erhead doesn't make you sick. Water softeners dissolve the minerals, like calcium, magnesium and iron that are normally found in hard water. Left untreated, these minerals leave a residue build-up in the showerhead, which plays host to bacteria. "Water softeners break down the minerals in the water and the accumulated minerals are flushed down the drain," says Jerry Poe, technical director at North American Salt Company, the producer of Nature's Own and Sure Soft brands of water conditioning products. "Using a good water softener is an easy way to protect your family from harmful bacteria and certain potential pulmonary problems." But the advantages of water softeners go beyond health benefits. They're also good for homeowners watching their pocketbooks. The Water Quality Association, in partnership with the Battelle Institute - an

independent research and development organization - examined the economic impact of water softeners. The group wanted to understand the effects water softeners had on the efficiency and lifespan of water heaters. Battelle Institute researchers tested gas, electric and tankless water heaters. The results made a strong case for soft water and water softeners. The gas and electric water heaters maintained their predicted 15-year lifespan when scientists used soft water. But with hard water, the heaters showed up to a 25 percent decrease in efficiency over the lifetime of the appliance. Tankless heaters using soft water also maintained their original efficiency rating over a 15-year span. But, when the tankless appliances heated hard water, substantial mineral build-up prevented them from functioning after less than two years of equivalent water use.

And, when it came to cost, researchers at the Battelle Institute found soft water delivered savings of almost 60 percent, compared with water heaters using hard water. Showerhead performance also was examined by researchers. Those spraying hard water

saw a 75 percent decrease in flow rate in less than 18 months due to hard water mineral deposits. Soft water showerheads maintained their consistent flow and stream over time. "You wouldn't think the simple act of taking a shower could play such an impor-

tant role in your family's health," says Poe. "But if your home has hard water, using a softener can help protect your family from dangerous bacteria and potential health problems, and it can save you money and prolong your appliances' lifespans at the same time."

BROWARD DENTAL IMPLANTS & COSMETIC CENTER Osteoporosis and Oral Health: The Mouth-Body Connection Osteoporosis is often considered a “silent” disease one that is associated with few warning signs in the early stages. However, do you know that the early signs of osteoporosis may be able to be seen in the mouth? When dentist observe bone loss in the jaw, it may be a sign of bone loss in another other part of the body. Osteoporosis is one of the most common human bone diseases affecting millions of people, including over one third of females above the age of 65. Osteoporosis is characterized by decreased bone density and weakened bones. As it progresses, osteoporosis can weaken bones to the point that they break under otherwise normal stress. Symptoms of osteoporosis often go unnoticed until a major fracture occurs, but your dentist may be able to detect the early signs of osteoporosis during your regular dental exam. Risk Factors: Although osteoporosis affects men and women, post – menopausal women are particularly susceptible to osteoporosis because diminished estrogen levels may speed up bone loss. Similarly, young women who are very thin and do not produce enough estrogen to menstruate, or those with eating disorders, may be at increased risk for osteoporosis. Other risk factors include: • Heredity • Lack of exercise • Calcium deficiency • Smoking • High caffeine and/or high alcohol consumption • Certain medications (such as steroids) How can osteoporosis affect your oral health? Besides causing weakened bones, which can lead to fractures throughout the body, osteoporosis can also have significant affect on your oral health. In advanced stages, osteoporosis can lead to tooth loss or erosion of the jawbone. Once teeth are lost, the jawbone can begin to lose its shape, which can affect your ability to eat, drink, and communicate effectively. Osteoporosis can also increase the risk of periodontal (gum) disease. Prevention – Keep you teeth and bones strong! Most people, especially women, will reach their peak bone mass by the time they are in their early 20’s, from then on only maintenance of existing bone is possible. Therefore the best prevention of osteoporosis should start in adolescence since it

may be a critical time for bone mass formation. Calcium is essential to building strong bones and adolescents should also be encouraged to consume less soda as the phosphoric acid in most cola drinks can limit calcium absorption. Ways to prevent osteoporosis for adults include: • Daily intake of the recommended amount of calcium women – 1200 mg and men 800 mg, and over age of 65 years 1500 mg. ª Perform weight bearing activities and muscle strengthening exercises. • Eat a healthy diet, including calcium and vitamin D. • Do not smoke • Reduce the amount of caffeine and alcohol consumed. • Visit your dentist regularly. Osteoporosis and Oral Health in older people: Tooth loss (edentulism) and osteoporosis are two of the common major health problems among older people. Osteoporosis occurs when the bone becomes less dense and more likely to develop fractures, and commonly affects bone in the hip, spine, and wrists. Various medical studies produce a link between osteoporosis and bone loss in the jaw, which supports and anchors teeth. Studies in Florence and other cities say that jawbone deterioration contributes to tooth loss, which affects around a third of US adults 65 and older. According to studies, women who have osteoporosis are three times more likely to experience tooth loss than those who don’t. Loss of alveolar bone, the part of the jawbone that supports teeth, has been found to loosen up teeth and develop tooth loss. The link between gum disease and tooth loss has already been established, but the relationship between bone and tooth loss has only been found recently. Some researchers and experts also suggest that decreased alveolar bone density makes more susceptible to gum disease, thus increasing other dental health risks. Oral bacteria and the body’s immune system may break down the bone and tissue that holds teeth in place. Since the bacteria flourishes in the gums, the body naturally fights these, but the gums and teeth may also be affected. However, treatments for osteoporosis may not be beneficial to oral and dental health. More research

and experiments are necessary to establish the relationship between oral bone loss and osteoporosis. A SPECIAL EASTER DINNER Lamb, ham, potatoes and a delicous desserts this Sunday HERB-CRUSTED RACK OF LAMB 1 (3- to 4-pound) rack of lamb roast 2 cloves of garlic, sliced 1 tablespoon extravirgin olive oil 1/4 teaspoon red wine vinegar 1/4 teaspoon soy sauce 1-1/2 teaspoons black pepper 1-1/2 teaspoons dried thyme 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary 2 tablespoons chopped fresh marjoram Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 400° F. Cut thin slits in the roast and insert the garlic slices. In a small bowl combine the oil, vinegar, soy sauce, pepper and thyme. Rub the roast with the oil mixture. Coat evenly with rosemary and marjoram. Place the roast on the roasting rack in a shallow pan. Place in the oven and reduce heat to 325° F. Roast 30 minutes.

STRAWBERRY TIRAMISU CAKE Directions: 1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the asparagus and cook until just tender, about 5 minutes. 2. Transfer the asparagus to ice water. Drain; pat dry with paper towels. Arrange the asparagus on a serving platter. 3. In a small bowl, stir together the onion, vinegar, oil and 1 tablespoon of the chives. Stir in the tomatoes, season with salt and pepper to taste and spoon over the asparagus. Sprinkle with the remaining chives and toasted pine nuts. Serve at room temperature.

Spread bottom layer with one third of the cheese filling; cover with one third of the sliced strawberries. Top with middle cake layer.
