It’s The Battle For Seat 1

With The Recent Negative Spotlight Shining On Hallandale Beach, Next Tuesday’s Special Election Will Attract Plenty of Attention - Locally As Well As Statewide By Larry Blustein @sfsuntimes@aol.com Next Tuesday (March 13), Hallandale Beach voters will once again head to the polls to do their part to help the City get back to business. What has transpired in the past six months - is certainly enough to keep the spotlight - and not a positive one - on a community that has certainly had its share of it. Since longtime Commissioner Anthony Sanders stepped down back in August - in the wake of a Broward Inspector General’s investigation that ac-

Hollywood ‘Officially’ Welcomes The Braverman Eye Center With Mayor Josh Levy On Hand To Help Cut The Ribbon, This Amazing Facility Is In The Spotlight By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com Hollywood - As Mayor Josh Levy spoke about how exciting it was to have Dr. Stanley Braverman and his impressive team from Braverman Eye Center in his City, the ribbon was cut and one of the most state-ofthe-art facilities of its kind officially opened. With dozens of friends and those in the profession coming out to

see this tremendous office - located right off US 1, and just north of Johnson Street, Hollywood gained yet another heavy hitter when Dr. Braverman moved north after 40 successful years in Hallandale Beach. “It is really an honor to have such a prestigious and so well respected business come into our community, and we welcome all of you

with open arms,” said Mayor Levy. “The solid reputation certainly precedes all of you.” With that, Dr. Braverman, his wife, Jennifer, and daughter, Kaelin, helped cut the ribbon to officially welcome the Braverman Eye Center to Hollywood - as dozens dined on some tremendous food and appreciated this two

story structure that is certainly the jewel of the neighborhood. “As I said when we opened back in June, this is a dream come true - that was five years in the planning,” Dr. Braverman said. “It was our idea - all along, to have an office that was spacious, state-of-the-art in technology and offer our employees and many loyal patients an experience that they haven’t had before.” “In addition, when you can have the Mayor of Hollywood and so many other quality industry people welcome us this way, it is really an amazing feeling,” Dr. Braverman added. Indeed, the official grand opening took place last Wednesday night - with tours of the spacious office as well as a chance to talk with other doctors, nurses and office staff. As many enjoyed the experience of this grand opening, very few were as excited as Dr. Ryan Hargreaves. Originally a Massachusetts native, Dr. Hargreaves has noticed the difference in the move - with more and more patients and the staff feeling rejuvenated - with more space and cutting edge technology on display. “This is an amazing facility where nobody is on top of one another,” he explained. “Everyone knew and had been looking forward to the space, and that is what you saw this evening. It really has been special for all off us.” No matter who he spoke with on Wednesday evening, Dr. Braverman was beaming with pride. Re-

member, this is someone who has performed thousands of sight-saving surgeries in over four decades, is a member of just about every organization and is one of the most well respected in the profession, but Dr. Braverman still gets excited when talking about his new eye center. “This is everything you could imagine - and much more,” Dr. Braverman said, hosting several tours of his facility. “16 examining rooms, Laser Surgical Suite with a comfortable waiting room. This is simply an amazing facility with the latest in technology, too.” With its 10 on staff medical doctors, ophthalmologists, and optometrists and countless skilled technicians - Braverman Eye Center has long been the leader in Laser Vision Correction. “What we have done - with this space - is to designate seven rooms to those patients who are there for eye examinations,” Dr. Braverman explained. “Those who are there for other reasons - medical and surgical - have their examining rooms as well. It has worked out great.” If you have not visited the new eye center, it is set up in a unique way - with the business offices and employee dining room on the second floor, away from the patients who have a spacious ground floor to move around - while waiting or going through exams and procedures. Also on the second floor is a conference room seating up to eighty doctors that will be used for teaching and hosting seminars on the latest in Lasik or any other cutting edge and new procedures. The waiting room is more than inviting. A spacious area that lets the patients see everything that is going on. Cushioned chairs, flat screen TV and wood floors

Ask Dr. Ron: Your Child Asks About Sex, Don’t Hide Your Head In The Sand

Dr. Ron.., My 11 year old son is hinting to us about sexual issues he is obviously learning from his friends. We are conservative people who have difficulty talking about these issues. We are also concerned about school programs he may enter soon that offers sex education from a different viewpoint than what we may believe. Should we send him for some counseling with a professional? P.J. Miami… A… Absolutely not…. It is up to you and your husband to get over your hang-ups, and give your child what he needs…, open and honest discussions with his parents… . Most parents are not enthusiastic communicators about sexual issues with their children. In fact, it is estimated that less than 20% of parents engage in any meaningful conversation on this topic with their kids.. So if their kids are not getting direction and information from their parents, where do you suppose most kids are getting their information from?...... You guessed it, from other kids, and the entertainment media. It is no wonder that the U.S. has one

ing points with his 2 ¼-length triumph to virtually clinch a spot in the field for the first leg of the Triple Crown at Churchill Downs May 5. The Dale Romans-trained son of Shackleford broke alertly from his outside post position to grab the early lead on the first turn, chased by Strike Power, the 7-2 second choice in a field of nine 3year-olds, and stalked by Good Magic, the 3-5 favorite making his first start since capturing the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Del Mar last November. Promises Fulfilled set fractions of 23.80 (seconds) and 48.39 for the half mile as he showed the way along the backstretch, challenged briefly by Storm Runner, a stablemate in the Romans Stable who dropped out of contention soon after. The pacesetter was challenged to the outside by Strike Power on the turn into the homestretch but kicked away to win by a comfortable margin. “The trainer told me to go to the lead and hold on,” said jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. after scoring his fifth victory on Fountain of Youth card. “When I asked my horse, he just took off again. He was impressive today. He ran the whole race. He broke great and was ready, the trainer was right.” Romans had entered three horses in the Fountain of Youth but scratched Free Drop Billy Saturday morning while opting to run the Grade 1 stakes winner in the Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct next

of the highest unwanted teen-age pregnancy rates in the world….. Schools also supply some help on this topic. About 70% of all school districts in the USA offer some type of sex-education programs. Fearing protests by some parents, the majority of these programs are of an extremely basic nature, emphasizing the biological aspects, rather than the real social issues that affect common teenagers. School programs usually present in 3 ways: 1) Abstinence Only Programs are the most basic approach, and offer no information about the use of contraceptives, relationships, or sexually transmitted diseases. 2) Abstinence Plus Programs offer besides basic biology lessons, information about sexually transmitted diseases, and the proper use of contraceptives. 3) Comprehensive Programs cover almost all issues regarding sexual matters, including relationship issues and sexual orientation. As you might imagine, which program is taught in each

school is highly influenced by the dominant ideology of the parents residing in each district. Research on the effectiveness of these three programs have supported comprehensive programs as having more positive outcomes, and correlate with students experiencing reduced pregnancies, and less high-risk sexual behavior. While I can understand how more conservative parents would rather not have their children learn about many sexual topics from a school program, they then best stand up to the plate, and talk to their kids. Hiding one’s heads in the sand, praying that the Lord will handle it.., is just too often an accident waiting to happen. P.J., if you insist on professional counseling, don’t get it for your son; get it for yourself P.J., so you can become a better communicator, and source of information for your son.. CalL me for a free 10 min eval.

Saturday. Promises Fulfilled, who won his first two races before finishing third in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) at Churchill Downs last year, proved up

to the task of getting his trainer to the winner’s circle while making his 2018 debut.

WHY DO I HEAR... BUT NOT UNDERSTAND? Study by Cambridge University in England Reveals Key Answer Until recently, there was no practical way to identify dead regions of hearing cells in the ear. However, a new British-developed procedure using standard test equipment now allows for identi cation of dead hearing cell regions. The study suggests that the presence or absence of dead regions may have serious implications in the tting of hearing aids. This research reveals that amplifying dead cells is a mistake which will result in poorer speech understanding in noise. A new type of digitally programmable microcircuit is now available using nanoScience tech-

nology that can be programmed to bypass the dead cells. As a result, the patient’s usable hearing cells receive ampli cation, thereby improving speech understanding in noise. “We are employing a like method in our diagnostic sound booths using a sound eld

speech in noise procedure,” said Falco Odorisio, HAS.“This test simulates hearing in a noisy crowd. We are able to determine maximum speech understanding by frequency shaping this new hearing aid.” The results have been phenomenal. For the rst time, a patient

is able to actually realize the exact percentage of speech understanding improvement in noisy listening environments. These new products come in the smallest digital wireless models. During its release, HearWell is o ering this new frequency-shaping wireless hearing

Election

From Page 1A

cused him of using his elected office for financial gain, Seat 1 has been vacant. Add to that, the January arrest of Mayor Joy Cooper, and much of this election this coming week has been put on the back-burner. In the first debate, first time candidate Thomas Sands, community activist Ann Henigson (sixth time candidate) and longtime politician Bill Julian took part - with first time candidates Mike Butler and Jean “John” Stassi - not present at the American Legion post. Last week, the forum moved to the Hallandale Community Cultural Center, where all candidates, except for Stassi, showed and were asked questions about City related issues, people and other things related to Hallandale Beach. While the questions were fair and clear, the answers not so much as some candidates either didn’t understand the questions or they chose not to answer. As many in the audience listened to the answers - using that as a measuring stick for who came out on top - several left confused on some of the answers. “I thought that Mr. Butler had great answers and was 100 percent clear on who he is and where he is coming from,” Elise Levin-Cohen observed. “But I also feel that Mr. Julian has learned from all the mistakes made and has the experience, too.” As questions were asked - from budget to growth of the City and the controversial Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) taking over the services in Hallandale Beach - some of the candidates did voice their opinion. “From the time I can remember, the Hallandale Beach Police Department was certainly an iconic group for so many youngsters growing up here,” Julian explained. “It was the trust that was built up with

your own City’s law enforcement.” In addition, Julian and the others spoke openly about how BSO is not such a favorable topic especially after the Douglas High tragedy. “I would think that the residents here understand how important it is to have your own Cityrun department,” Sands said. “As a kid growing up here, I also looked up to the local Hallandale Beach Police that patrolled our City.” Butler wasn’t on either side of the fence, opting to “seeing the data and understand how it’s going to affect the city.” When it came to dealing with the budget, Butler, a successful businessman, had some observations on how he would do his part. Obviously, not seeing the budget, he contends that “in all budgets, you have to see what can be reduced or cut and still maintain a solid foundation.” The winner in the special election will serve until November, when Sanders’ term ends. For Julian, there are many who will not let his go, although past cleared of any wrong doing. He believes that people have watched enough in-fighting on the Commission - and feels that change has to be made. “I think the city really needs me,” Julian said. “I miss it. I miss helping people - and they have continued to tell me how experience is my needed.” Julian lost the 2016 election after audio recordings surfaced that implied that he may have solicited favors from a developer in exchange for a “yes” vote on a high-rise project. Julian was also accused of asking the developer to get him a van for a pet charity along with 300 campaign workers. He was cleared when the State Attorney’s Office said there was no evidence he received any benefit of any kind. “If you know me, and understand how much I have done to elevate this

community, you know that I didn’t do anything,” he explained. “If elected, I can work with a dysfunctional dais. I’m not going into this to argue and fight. I want this City to flourish again.” Julian maintains that he is the only candidate who has built up trusting relationships throughout the entire City and not just “east of U.S. 1”. Henigson has also done so much to elevate the community by volunteering much of her time, and that is where she got her following. Entering the race for the first time 11 years ago, her battle to have term limits is something that many agree with. Having term limits in other areas have worked - not letting elected officials get too comfortable with special interest groups. “If you have term limits, you will have fresh faces, new blood - and less chance for corruption.” For Sands, who grew up in Hallandale Beach, his belief that he is the only true voice on the west side of the City, pointing out that “all of our elected officials live on the east side - and that area is often neglected.” Sands has been coming to commission meetings since 2010, and has a very good grasp on the things that needed to be done. He is excited to have the opportunity. While Stassi was not present for the forum last week, he maintains that, like Julian, he also thinks he can maintain peace on the dais. “I just don’t like what I see on this commission,” he said. “I have learned from my experiences that new blood is a good thing. The respect for City government is para-

mount.” Stassi also won’t support a merger with the Sheriff’s Office unless the current HBPD are

backing the move. “The thing about this election is there are not going to be a lot of voters heading out,” Julian ex-

plained. “That’s why it’s essential to support your candidate by voting. One or two votes WILL make a difference.”

Hollywood Beach Barrier Island Parking Survey Now Through March 30 Hollywood - The City of Hollywood's Parking Division is working with Walker Consultants on a long range parking plan for Hollywood Beach and the barrier island area. As part of the planning process, a survey has been created as a way for residents and visitors to share their parking experiences on Hollywood Beach. The goal of the survey is to gain a better understanding of the travel patterns of beach employees, residents, visitors and business owners while on the barrier island. This survey does not include downtown Hollywood or other areas in the City of Hollywood. The brief survey should only take a few minutes to complete and the valuable information you share will be used during the planning process. We remove spider veins and heal venous ulcers, alleviating leg swelling, aching, heaviness and tiredness and improving the overall appearance of the legs. We were one of the first and are still one of the only practices in South Florida to offer the Picoway Laser. This is the most advanced laser for tattoo removal, spot removal and non-ablative skin resurfacing. It is often used by celebrities to prepare for the red carpet and is referred to as “ The lunchtime lift” as it smooths wrinkles, builds collagen and removes discoloration, without down time. After training at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Fox practiced vascular medicine at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals of Cleveland and later moved to Miami. She has been performing vein and laser procedures for almost 20 years. Featured as a vein and laser expert by multiple news programs throughout the U.S. and Latin America, Dr. Fox has written numerous articles and lectured extensively on varicose veins. She developed her own technique for injecting veins and has served as a training facility for multiple medical establishments. She was the first physician in Cleveland to perform endovenous laser ablation and one of the first nationally. She was the first in Broward County to offer the Clarivein procedure and one of the first in the country to offer this procedure. For decades, she has performed ultrasound-guided injections and foam sclerotherapy. She is one of the first in South Florida to offer the Picoway laser and Resolve by Picoway. Picoway is the fastest and best laser for tattoo removal, spot removal and skin rejuvenation. Dr. Fox and her team have decades of experience successfully treating veins, with thousands of happy patients. Fox Vein offers the newest and best minimally-in-

vasive vein procedures including endovenous laser ablation, foam and regular sclerotherapy, and the Picoway laser for skin discoloration and tattoo removal. The Picoway laser is the best laser available for tattoo removal. Without downtime, It removes tattoos of all colors including red, blue and green. It’s also one of the most advanced lasers for skin rejuvenation, removing sunspots, smoothing scars, including acne scars, shrinking and tightening pores and removing discoloration from varicose veins in the ankles and feet. Dr. Fox and her team also use state of the art hair removal equipment, The Gentle Max Pro. This is one of the best hair removal lasers and also is wonderful at removing spider veins. All procedures are done in our office and most in less than 15 minutes.

Fox Vein and Laser experts specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of venous disease, including varicose veins. Pictured above is a before and after treatment.

WHAT IS VEIN DISEASE? HOW DOES IT PROGRESS AND WHAT SHOULD I DO? Veins carry blood back to the heart and have oneway valves. These valves may not work correctly and can cause “reflux” or back flow. This causes blood to pool in the ankles and pain, heaviness and swelling in the legs that worsens at the end of the day, after traveling or standing. Over time, the legs get more painful, swollen and bulging veins appear. Discoloration appears in the ankles and skin changes in the ankles and feet develop. As time goes on, skin changes may worsen and the person may develop venous eczema, scarring called lipodermatosclerosis, open sores or ulcers, and bleeding veins. Patients with symptoms should schedule with Fox Vein where Dr. Fox and her team will use ultrasound technology to diagnose the specific vein problem. In the meantime, the person should elevate their legs, wear compression hose and take anti-inflammatories for discomfort.

WHY REMOVE A TATTOO? Around 25-30% of people in the United States have tattoos. At any given time, around a quarter of these individuals want their tattoos removed. Men remove them more than women, usually for professional development. Many jobs will not employ or promote someone with visible tattoos. Governmental jobs, military, police and corporate America often do not want tattoos in visible areas. Some people tattoo their former significant other’s name on them. Some people as they age no longer want their tattoos. Some people want room for more ink and remove tattoos to replace them. Some tattoos fade with age and no longer look attractive. Whatever the reason, Picoway is the best tattoo removal laser. It removes all colors of ink faster, better and with less pain, using Pico technology.

WHY RESOLVE BY PICOWAY? Picoway won laser of the year in 2015. It is one of the newest and best lasers for skin rejuvenation, skin tightening, spot removal, collagen building and reducing the signs of aging with no pain or down time. It

A Delicious Passover Seder To Remember

Blue Bar & Grill Features A Four Course Traditional Holiday Meal vegetables, garlic mashed potatoes and a dijon mustard sauce. How about Braised Angus Beef Brisket (Served with braised carrots, baked potato & a demi-glace sauce)? Your seder dinner

For so many area families, the mention of Passover conjures memories of family, friends and great foods. It is indeed a tradition that ushers in spring. The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan, March 30-April 7. The holiday commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. It is observed by avoiding leaven, and highlighted by the Seder meals that include four cups of wine, eating matzah and bitter herbs, and retelling the story of the Exodus. In Hebrew it is known as Pesach (which means “to pass over”), because God passed over the Jewish homes when killing the Egyptian firstborn on the very first Passover eve. While many families tell the stories of generations, where food was the centerpiece, others begin the yearly ritual by taking the family out - and this year - nobody will roll out a better experience than Chef Anthony Raggiri and Blue Bar & Grill. The Passover Seder will be like no other for just $34.99. With a 4 course Seder planned, it is time to start thinking ahead. Making plans now for a memorable experience will ensure that you are not left out. From traditional favorites - such as Matzo Ball Soup, Gefilte Fish and Chopped Chicken Liver, the meal begins with a delicious array of foods that have been part of the culture for generations.

In preparation of a tasty meal, a refreshing house garden salad, which includes mixed greens, carrots, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and a housemade Aromatic Balsamic Dressing, is served.

A MEAL TO REMEMBER After starting the Seder off with those traditionrich dishes, it is now time for the main

event. With a selection that includes Braised Lamb Shanks (Comes with a baked potato & carrots, Lamb Sauce prunes and with toasted almonds) and two incredible fish dishes - such as Rainbow Trout Almandine (Served with sweet mashed potatoes, sautéed mixed vegetables and lemon sauce) and Honey Glazed Atlantic Salmon (Served with grilled asparagus,

garlic mashed potato with a honey & rosemary glaze). If lamb or fish is not your choice - maybe a mouth-watering Herb Roasted 1/2 Chicken is. Served with mixed

comes to a close with macaroons, jelly rolls as well as American coffee and tea. In observance of the holidays, Blue Bar & Grill will begin their weekend entertainment at 9 p.m.

Delicious Home Grown Shrimp Is Ready To Serve • 2 tsp. lime juice • 1/2 tsp. chili powder • 1/4 tsp. kosher salt • 1/3 c. chopped cilantro, plus more for serving • 1 lb. medium shrimp, peeled and deveined • 1/3 c. finely diced onion

When it comes to our coastline, we are in such a great region - year round - for the freshest seafood, shellfish. Because you can go up and down both coasts of Florida and come away with endless amounts of delicious shrimp in all sizes - chefs from all over this region have come up with amazing recipes for these tasty and plentiful residents of our waters. Today, we have some mouth-watering ways to serve up shrimp, and we are confident that every member of the family will love them all! CEVICHE • kosher salt • 1 lb. shrimp, peeled and deveined • Juice of 3 limes • Juice of 1 orange • 1/2 c. red onion, diced • 2 jalapeños, minced • 1 c. cucumber, seeded and diced • 1 c. chopped cherry tomatoes • 2 tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro • 1/4 c. mayonnaise • 2 tbsp. Hot sauce • 8 corn tostadas • 1 avocado, sliced

Bring a large pot of well-salted water to a boil. Turn off heat, add shrimp, and poach until shrimp are pink and cooked through, about 3 minutes. Drain, let cool, then chop shrimp into bite-size pieces. In

a large bowl, combine shrimp with lime juice, orange juice, onion, and jalapeños. Season with salt, then let marinate in the refrigerator, 1 hour. Stir in cucumber, tomatoes, and cilantro. Taste and adjust seasoning. Make spicy mayo: In a small bowl, mix together mayo and hot sauce. Spread onto tostadas, then add ceviche. Top each tostada with sliced avocado and serve immediately. LEMON GARLIC • 2 tbsp. butter, divided • 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil • 1 lb. medium shrimp, peeled and deveined • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes • Juice of 1 lemon • 2 tbsp. dry white wine (or water) • Freshly chopped parsley, for garnish

In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon butter and olive oil. Add shrimp, garlic, and crushed red pepper flakes and cook until shrimp is pink, 3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in remaining tablespoon butter, lemon juice, white wine, and parsley. GARLIC CILANTRO • 4 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, divided • 3 cloves garlic, minced

In a small bowl, whisk together 3 tablespoons olive oil, garlic, lime juice, chili powder, salt, and cilantro and pour over shrimp. Mix until all the shrimp are coated. Cover and refrigerate for 10 minutes, or up to 8 hours. In a skillet over medium-high heat, warm remaining tablespoon olive oil. Add onions and cook until fragrant, 2 to 3 minutes. Add coated shrimp and cook on one side until pink, about 45 seconds, then flip over. Cook until shrimp is cooked through, about 1 minute more. Serve immediately with extra cilantro, if desired.

BROCCOLI FETTUCINI • kosher salt • 1 lb. fettuccine • Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling • 1 head broccoli, cut into florets • 2 tbsp. butter • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1/4 c. chicken broth • Freshly ground black pepper • 1 lb. shrimp, peeled and deveined • 2 c. tomato sauce • 1/2 c. heavy cream • 1/4 c. chopped fresh parsley

Bring an 8-quart stock pot of water to a boil and generously season with salt. Cook pasta according to package directions until al dente. (Stir frequently as fettuccine tends to stick.) If necessary, stir in a drizzle of olive oil. In the last minute of cooking, add broccoli. Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium heat melt butter and sauté with garlic for 2 minutes. Add chicken broth, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper and bring to a simmer; toss in shrimp and sauté until pink, about 3 minutes. Transfer shrimp to a bowl and set aside. Stir in tomato sauce and heavy cream; simmer on low for 5 minutes. Toss in pasta until well combined; add back shrimp and broccoli. Stir until warmed through. Garnish with parsley and serve immediately.
