Some South Florida businesses ripping tourists off - creating plenty of future problems

When it comes to promoting South Florida, there may not be anyone who will do more to shine the spotlight on this area than me. Thatʼs why what was discovered by Channel 10 on Monday was quite disturbing. While I still fully intend to talk about the great things going on in our community over the next few weeks, I need to address the two gas station owners across from Miami International Airport who openly admit that itʼs the tourists who pay the price for $4.60 a gallon for regular, so what the heck! My first inclination

would be to call them idiots who are getting fat off of tourists - not locals - and it would anger me to probably go over there and try divert traffic down the street, where the price is cheaper and the business would like your last impression to be positive. The hard work we have done to attract tourists from across the country and throughout the world in these tough economic times, and the
parting shot we have from these two heartless people is we are going to charge you nearly a $1 more a gallon than any other gas station because we have you trapped in your rental car in a foreign area! Itʼs people like this that all of us would hope, when we travel to other areas, that we arenʼt getting screwed by. They can charge what they want, and the tourists will pay it. The State of the City - 2012 - Part 1
‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’
Mayor Joy Cooper • FIRST OF TWO PARTS HALLANDALE BEACH - Last week I had the opportunity to address 100 stakeholders in our city; business owners, citizens and staff at an event open to the public and hosted by the Hallandale Beach Chamber of Commerce. The following is the speech I delivered that will be covered in two parts. It is in speech form. Thank you all for taking time out of your busy work schedule to attend todayʼs luncheon and listen to my State of the City Address. I want to thank Patricia and the Chambers staff for once again organizing this event and offering me an opportunity to talk about a job that I truly enjoy doing. I am especially happy to have an opportunity to talk about a place I love and call home - Hallandale Beach! I also want to extend a special thanks to Mardi Gras and their superb staff! Your gracious service and hospitality is truly appreciated. I had an opportunity this January to represent Hallandale Beach at the US Conference of Mayors. It is an honor and a wonderful experience to share best practices and ideas with fellow mayors around the country. Mayors are a unique group of people. No matter what size city, what state, East Coast, West Coast, every Mayor shares the same common goal of protecting and serving their residents. We also share a common desire to learn from one another and collaborate on a national level to address many issues including education, environment, job growth, small and large business development and infrastructure. At this year's conference one of the keynote speakers was Thomas L. Friedman. You may not recognize his name but you may recognize the
title of one of his famous books “The World Is Flat”. This book was published back in 2005 and the topic was how the new Internet was changing the world and moving us all towards globalization. Between you and me, I was not too thrilled with hearing Thomas Friedman speak. I am not too happy with the direction the world has taken since his first book. I looked at my colleague across the table and jokingly said isnʼt this is the guy that ruined the world and made it flat. At that time the United States was the leader in the global economy. We loved globalization. What happened in the technology world since then did not only change the world but changed every corner of the world. According to the International Telecommunication Union ITU an agency of the United Nations, today the population of the world is current 6.8 billion in 2010 there were over 4.6 billion cell phones worldwide. Two thirds of the world's population has access to technology. 23% of the globe uses the Internet. So not only is the world now flat, it is truly connected village to village. Freidman shared his views about not only how we are connected, but the fact that we are hyper connected. By now I know many of you have already checked that new email, text or tweet that came in on your phone. Let's face it, we are hooked and some of us know now how valuable a tool technology is, so long as you are brave enough to try. Just ask a kid they will help you out. It has become a required tool in our daily lives. Every day individuals across the globe in far corners are connecting through the Internet. Collaborations are taking place between individuals, not across town but across nations. Young entrepreneurs are collaborating, sharing new ideas and finding new ways to deliver services to customers not simply in the US but around the globe. Ordering goods and services has become as easy as surfing the web. I have even succumb to the necessity to have
Facebook, LinkedIn, text and tweets. I havenʼt mastered Skype yet. Friedman discussed this topic in his new book; That Us To Be Us: How America fell behind in the world it invented. The same country that created microchips in Silicon Valley exported the technology around the world that is now being used around world is slipping behind, we have lost our drive and desire to educate, work hard and invest. The same thing that made us strong, Made in America was exported over a flat world and we need to get back. There is one quote he shared with us from his book and it is so true. He goes on to say, “that in 2005 Facebook didn't even exist, for most people twitter was still a sound, the cloud was something in the sky, 3G was a parking space, applications were what you sent to college and Skype was a typo. Not surprisingly, he goes on to explain that while other countries are focusing on education building infrastructure and creating products America has lost its edge. His speech really inspired everyone. He affirmed what the mayors of the US have been talking about and doing back home for years, despite inaction on the national and state levels. We get it! We have to because we deliver services on a daily basis. He went on to discuss the political climate and the lack of true national leadership. That's not what I would like to focus on today. You will have to buy his book or should I say down load it on your Kindle. I do want to focus on one of chapters in the beginning of his book and right on point for local government, If you see something, say something! Of course that really means text it, email it or tweet it in todayʼs sense. Americans are finally getting it; they're getting fed up with inaction, the lack of jobs and the bad economy. More and more people are engaging in democracy and the Democratic process. And due to technology they're doing it in lightning speed. During the conference
the Occupy Congress Movement began a protest outside of the building while the mayors were meeting. I was quite intrigued to find out what was going. A colleague of mine and I went outside to watch the Occupy Movement and all the action taking place outside. There were all types of individuals; young, old, from all walks of life. All they wanted to do was speak with the mayors. My friend and I spoke with a young couple from California and soon a crowd gathered. They were well organized, well spoken and very civil.
We shared that we supported their efforts against corporate greed and changes to the constitution, that only living breathing beings are individuals. They thanked us for our comments and we proceeded to walk back to the side entrance. What happened next is what really impressed me, and provided a glimpse of how the powerful technology is and hyper connected we really are. Within matter of minutes ½ a block away there was the other group cheering us on that already knew our names and where we were from.
It's all thanks to tweets! Those of you that have gotten to know me understand that in that in addition to being hyper or should I say hyper connected, I am really motivated to work on making things better. But we all need to do this collaboratively. It goes back to, if you see something, say something. It goes back to communication and technology. Today I'm here to deliver to you my thoughts on the State of the City, but I am also going to ask you to do something along with every resident, get engaged in the community. Help improve the city in which you live work and play. You're doing it today as part of the chamber but it also needs to be done every day. Let me know what we can do better. Everyone here knows that I'm accessible and most importantly dedicated to helping solve problems no matter how big or small, if it is important to you it is important to me. If you see something, say something! The State of Our City great! We are so different compared too many other cities around the State and country. This has been accomplished with good fiscal policy and planning. Many are raising taxes lying off employees and cutting services. This past fiscal budget we kept the tax rate the same at 5.90 mills. Over the past three years we have maintained this tax rate even in light of an overall reduction in revenues of over $8 million since 2008. It should be note that we have lowered the millage a full mill over the past years. We lost revenues but we maintained or increased the level of service that our citizens expect. Most importantly we have not lost sight of the need for continued investment in our infrastructure.

Vacant Downtown Hollywood Property to Become Arts Hub
HOLLYWOOD - A prime property in Downtown Hollywood was recently sold and will be transformed into an arts hub of the community. The 12,500-square-foot corner building at 1955 Harrison Street is the former home of the Arts Academy of Hollywood, a performing and visual arts educational facility that closed its doors three years ago. Developer Jerry Mintz sold the building February 8 to Ben Cohen, who also owns the Ramada hotel on Harrison Street and three other downtown properties. Cohen characterized his vision for the site as a "marketplace for the arts" where visual, performing, culinary and fashion pursuits will be showcased. He said the new destination will be a unique addition to the historic downtown arts and entertainment district. The distinctive two-story building, which was constructed in the 1950s in the Art Deco/Moderne architectural style, will lend itself perfectly to a multifunction space, which will include a rooftop garden for holding private events, Cohen said. The building's interior already has been demolished, and the foundation is being reinforced to accommodate the rooftop venue. The building will have an elevator in addition to an interior staircase. The plans also include a new facade that will incorporate the building's existing special characteristics. Cohen expects it to take between eight months and a year to complete the project. In the meantime, he is shopping around for a national food and beverage brand or local chain to come on board, and fine-tuning his arts venue concept with input from the community. "I am in touch with a lot of arts organizations that want to join," Cohen said. "I do have the vision. I feel this is going to be a cornerstone for the downtown." By Suzanne Wallace Sun Times AVENTURA - The place was Bati Fine Jewelry, a warm and inviting shop in the Promenade Shops on Biscayne Boulevard in Aventura. The time was 8:30 on a Sunday night. My assignment was to report on a function being held there that evening and to interview the jewelry designer. I was missing the Grammy Awards for this. Iʼm thinking it must be a jewelry exhibition of some sort but it was an odd day and time for that. Boy, did I get it wrong! I was soon overjoyed with the assignment.
MUSIC AND JEWELRY - A PERFECT MATCH As I approached the shop, I noticed the door was open, an odd occurrence for a jewelry shop. There was no jewelry on display, the cases were empty, but the room was filled, with people bobbing their heads and tapping their feet to guitar riffs of classic rock from an incredible four piece band. The Who, Rolling Stones....in a jewelry shop! During a break from the music, talking to the people, I learned about the unique and creative person that is Elan Aburos. Elanʼs customers adore him, his jewelry designs, and his music. Apparently Elanʼs creativity runs in high gear. He explained to me, “It is all interconnected, the music, art, the designs, they all come from the same place, a need to express my creativity.” So after working all week on incredible pieces of fine jewelry, he unwinds on Sunday night with his friends Steve from Fashion Edge, Elanʼs nephew Michael Burman and Paul, who plays the bass. He encourages his customers to come, enjoy some refreshments and spend an evening listening to classic rock and bluesy

His maternal grandfather was the personal jewelry designer for the King of Yemen. Elan came to the United States in 1985 and began working in the Design District on 47th Street in New York. He opened a booth in the International Jewelry Exchange when he moved to Florida in
1987. Elanʼs jewelry speaks for itself and those who have commissioned him to design exquisite pieces have sung his praises and encouraged their friends and family to seek him out for their special projects. Heʼs even designing for the next generation who have seen his work with their Mom and Dads over the years.

Heart disease: First signs different, but threat similar for men and women
(ARA) - While heart disease continues to receive a lot of attention, certain myths surrounding the disease persist. A couple of the most common myths are that heart disease is more common in men than women, and that the first signs of a heart attack are the same for both men and women, says Dr. Mary Ann McLaughlin, medical director of the cardiac health program at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in men and women in the United States, affecting both sexes relatively equally. "Women are more afraid of dying from cancer," says McLaughlin. "But in fact, they are much more likely to die from heart disease." Also, the first signs of a heart attack can manifest themselves in different ways between men and women. While both men and women can experience the more well-known symptoms like chest pain or tightness and a shooting pain in the left arm, here are the most common differences in symptoms by sex, according to McLaughlin. The more obvious symptoms are more prevalent in men, which might be why research shows that men go to the emergency room with symptoms much earlier in than women. More subtle symptoms are more likely in women. These include shortness of breath, sweating or dizziness, nausea, severe fatigue, sudden sleep disturbances, pain radiating through the jaw, small of the back or between the shoulder blades. "Women with diabetes are about twice as susceptible to heart attacks as men with the condition," says McLaughlin. "Increased risk factors for women also include having an au-

Knowing the first signs of a heart attack is important, but reducing your risks for heart disease is the best way to avoid experiencing one. McLaughlin offers the following tips for a healthy heart: * Reduce salt intake. Limiting your consumption of processed foods can help with this, as they are often high in salt. * Choose your fats wisely. Use olive oil instead of butter, snack on nuts instead of other sugary and high-fat snacks, and take supplements like flax seed oil that can boost your levels of omega3 fatty acids, which can reduce artery inflammation. Consuming more omega-3s can also help you reduce your LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. * Get regular exercise. A good rule of thumb is when balanced with a proper diet, 30 minutes of exercise a day will help you maintain your current weight, while 60 minutes will help you lose weight. If that seems like a lot, try to work exercises in to your daily tasks by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or walking or biking to work. Maintaining a healthy weight lowers your risk for cardiovascular disease. * Ask your doctor whether a daily
regimen of low-dose aspirin would be appropriate for you, as it could lower your risk of a heart attack. * Maintain a daily intake of 1,000 mg of vitamin D, which can be found in some of the same fatty fish that contain high levels of omega3 fatty acids. Vitamin D supplements can also help you achieve this, as low levels are associated with heart disease and high blood pressure. Exposure to sunshine also helps your body produce vitamin D, but don't forget your sunscreen. • Know your numbers. Your doctor can help you get your readings and give you advice on how to meet the following goals for optimum heart health: Total cholesterol: less than 200 LDL (bad cholesterol): less than 100 HDL (good cholesterol): greater than or equal to 40 Total cholesterol to HDL ratio: less or equal to 4.4 for women and less than or equal to 5 for men Triglycerides: less than 150 Blood pressure: less than 120 systolic and less than 80 diastolic Non-fasting glucose: less than 120 Fasting glucose: less than 100 Hemoglobin A1c: less than 7 To learn more about heart disease and care, and to hear stories from pa-

Conquer childhood obesity with tips for healthy family living
(ARA) - Today, health professionals encourage parents of even very young children to actively confront the childhood obesity epidemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention find that obesity rates for children ages 2 to 5 have more than doubled over the past 30 years, and The White House Task Force on Obesity reports that more than half of obese children became obese by their second birthday. "With the obesity epidemic looming large, it's absolutely crucial for parents to instill healthy habits right from the start," says Dr. Laura Jana, pediatrician and award-winning parenting author. "While this may seem like a tremendous responsibility for those still adjusting to diapers, play dates and the many other demands of new parenthood, it's not hard to help children grow up healthy by committing to some simple yet important lifestyle changes." Jana recommends some tips: Downsize your plate, upsize the veggies. An easy way to cut down on unhealthy eating is to use a smaller plate. Portion
sizes are now two to five times larger than in years past, and studies have shown that the bigger the serving dish, the bigger the serving is likely to be. "The more we heap on our children's plates, the more likely we are to unintentionally encourage them to overeat. Avoiding large plates can help you avoid serving supersized meals," Jana says. What belongs on that healthier-sized plate? The USDA MyPlate program recommends making half your plate fruits and vegetables and the other half protein and grains. Other important recommendations include serving fatfree or low-fat (1 percent) milk to children older than 2, choosing
lower-sodium foods and skipping sugary drinks. This simple, fresh-plated pictureof-nutritional-health program even comes with online tools to create a customized food plan for your little one. SWAP SCREEN TIME FOR PLAYTIME. Young children thrive and learn best through interacting with others and playing with real objects in their environment. While watching TV may be fun and entertaining, or even appear to be educational, the American Academy of Pediatrics reports it does not support learning for children younger than 2. In fact, evidence suggests that screen time
may interfere with young children's healthy development and encourage sedentary behaviors and poor sleep - both are habits implicated in the obesity epidemic. Dr. Mary Zurn, vice president of education for Primrose Schools, recommends independent play as an alternative to TV. "The early years are critical to a child's development, so it's important to ensure that children have opportunities to explore their surroundings and find out what they can make happen," Zurn says. Singing songs, drawing, playing with puzzles and stacking blocks are fun, "unplugged" activities children can do on their own that also support their creative,
problem-solving and reasoning skills.
GET MOVING. Pediatricians recommend children ages 1 to 3 get 60 to 90 minutes of physical activity every day, while preschoolers need 90 to 120 minutes. Regular exercise helps children grow to a healthy weight, build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints, and strengthen their hearts. There are many fun ways to add physical activity to your family's daily routine: turn a casual stroll into a scavenger hunt, play tag, race through the sprinklers or simply get up and dance. "I love getting children to dance because it not only gives them a healthy dose of exer-

When is nonprescription cold medicine not enough? (ARA) - Do you have a cold that just won't go away? The aisle at your local drugstore is overflowing with different cold medicines, and choosing the right one feels like a gamble with your wallet taking the hit at every purchase. Without a cure, the common cold is a treatthe-symptoms illness and that's where the picture gets even more complicated. According to the Mayo Clinic, the common cold is caused by more than 100 viruses, which means signs and symptoms vary greatly. From coughing and sneezing to body aches and nausea, the common cold is different in the estimated 62 million cases occurring each year in the United
States, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. And that adds up to a lot of symptoms and cold medicine. When you take nonprescription medicine for four to seven days and your symptoms do not improve or the symptoms get worse, it is time to go to seek medical attention, according to Sarah Braga, who is a Registered Pharmacist who holds a Doctorate in Pharmacy and serves as director of drug information and associate professor at South University's School of Pharmacy in Columbia, S.C. "While antibiotics are not appropriate for treating a viral infection, complications from the common cold can in-
clude bacterial infections such as sinusitis, ear infections, and pneumonia. Remember that your pharmacist is there to help you long before you have a prescription in hand." Pharmacists are trained to conduct assessments and to make recommendations on a
wide range of nonprescription medications, including herbal remedies, vitamins, and supplements. For the common cold, remedies come in three broad categories: pain relievers, decongestant nasal sprays and cough syrups. Reading the labels and understanding
dosage, especially for young children, is critical. "Nonprescription medicine should be taken with the same care as prescription medicine, especially for those with complicating factors such as pregnancy or chronic long-term medical conditions such as diabetes or asthma," says Dr. Braga. "And your pharmacist is there to help you make good choices for treating your cold symptoms and can help you with dosage instructions." Consider these factors when evaluating whether or not it is time to see the doctor. 1. Do you have a fever? 2. Have you been treating your symptoms for a week with no improvement or have the
symptoms gotten worse? 3. Are you experiencing unusual symptoms such as dizziness, new pain, coughing blood, etc.? 4. Do you have complicating factors such as diabetes, or are you pregnant? If you can answer "yes" to two or more of the above questions, it is probably time to seek medical attention. For most people suffering with the common cold, standing in the drugstore aisle reading the labels on nonprescription cold medicine and trying to decide which one to use is a challenge. Remember, you are not alone, and your pharmacist is there to help.

Learn, grow and have fun at the 10th Annual Water Matters Day Festival!
By Ali Parker HOLLYWOOD - Broward County will be holding its yearly celebration highlighting the importance of water at Tree Tops Park in Davie on Saturday, March 10th from 9 am to 3 pm. This yearʼs theme is “A Decade of Difference.” This event was created to teach residents about water issues and conservation and give them practical help in adopting these practices. To fulfill that goal, the County provides residents free native plants, rain gauges, guidance and a host of other resources. The City of Hollywood will have its own educational booth at the park with an interactive display about the impacts of various stormwater pollutants, as well as information about city water and sewer services. Coloring and activities books will be available for the little ones at the Hollywood booth. Staff will also give out leak detection kits and cloth bags to help conserve and protect our precious resources. Plastic bags frequently end up in our canals, water bodies and beaches where they pollute the environment and harm wildlife. Using cloth bags helps prevent this pointless and harmful pollution. Leak detection kits help homeowners determine whether their toilets are leaking, costing them money and wasting water. The highlight of the event is an educational scavenger hunt of sorts. There are dozens of educational booths from the county, cities, non-profits organizations and other groups at the park. Water Matters visitors are given an entry sheet with a number and a blank space for each of these booths on it. As participants visit each educational booth or station they have a quick lesson about a water-related topic and the sheets are stamped by staff. When a certain number of stamps have been collected, they can be turned in for free trees, bushes, and other water conserving plants at the native plant center. Many schools throughout Broward County also offer their students extra credit for attending the educational events and collecting stamps. Some schools have even had Saturday field trips to the event in the past. Other interesting displays at the event include demonstration gardens, a solar car and interactive wildlife displays. There will also be food and music, games and craft activities, face painting and clowns! Water Matters Day has averaged about 4,000 visitors a year in the past and hopes to see even greater numbers of visitors this year. The event itself is free, but Tree Tops Park charges an admission fee of $1.50 per person, children 5 and under may enter free of charge. Come out to Davie on Saturday March 10th to join in the fun and learning at this popular county sponsored event!

Final Budget Town Hall Meeting Set for Feb. 29
The fourth City of Hallandale Beach Budget Awareness Town Hall Meeting is set for next Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 6:30 p.m., the North Beach Community Center, 2801 E. Hallandale Beach Boulevard. The meeting is geared toward residents, property owners and business owners in the Northeast Quadrant, but is open to everyone. Each of the four meetings held in February, one in each quadrant, has been tailored to the issues and concerns of the particular neighborhood and business community. The third meeting was held last night in for residents of the Northwest Quadrant. However, citywide concerns have been raised at each meeting. Last year, the city completed a citywide survey of residents and business owners, asking opinions on city services and a multitude of issues affecting the community. It highlighted city successes and areas that need improvement citywide and in each quadrant. The Budget Awareness Town Hall Meeting will address many of the concerns citywide and particular to each quadrant. In the first three meetings, residents raised questions about the timeline to implement the parks master plan, maintenance of city streets and facilities, traffic flow, drainage, community programs, litter and graffiti among other issues. One of the budget issues of particular concern for Northeast Quadrant residents and businessmen is traffic flow on Three Islands Boulevard. The city is reviewing a proposal to close one lane in each direction to create pedestrianfriendly sidewalks, bicycle paths and landscape areas. Also, in this quadrant, the new city marina is getting ready to open 26 slips for annual rentals and three transient slips in a secured area on the west side of Three Islands Boulevard. After this final meeting this month, city leaders will evaluate the comments from residents in each quadrant and draft the budget. The draft of the budget will be presented at a citywide meeting at 6:30 p.m., May 23, at City Hall.

Early registration ends Friday, Feb. 24; all players must register by Friday, March 2. Corporate and local sponsors are being sought for the Hallandale Beach GreenFest 2012, Saturday, May 5, on the City Hall grounds. “The chamberʼs Green Leadership Organization (GLO) committee and the city combined the Arbor Day, Earth Day and Eco Fair into GreenFest,” said Rafael Perdomo, Hallandale Beach green initiatives coordinator. In consolidating the three annual events, the city and chamber expanded event hours from four to six hours, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more than 21 years, Hallandale Beach has been designated a “Tree City USA” community for its commitment to preserving green space and saving trees. Stressing the need to protect the environment and save trees, water and conserve energy, the city annually distributed hundreds of trees during the Arbor Day celebration. This year, the city partnered with the Chamber of Commerce, and plans to hand out fruit trees and water conservation devices to those in attendance. Youngsters at Hallandale Elementary School are being encouraged to design a GreenFest poster as part of the annual celebration. Members of the City of Hallandale Beach Beautification Board will judge the posters and select the winner. The winning poster will become the design for GreenFest 2013. This year, the poster combines artwork from past Arbor Day, Earth Day and Eco Fair poster contest winners. Other events will include an art contest using only recycled materials, energy conservation information and workshops, alternate fuel vehicles and electric car updates, food and childrenʼs games. Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, Aug. 14, to begin the selection process to select candidates in the primary election for federal, state and local offices, but if youʼre not registered you wonʼt be able to participate. The group is impartial; there is no campaigning. “Weʼre just trying to get people to vote, regardless of party affiliation,” said Mary Thompson, of Organizing for America. CHICKEN CROQUETTES POTATO CAKES 2 cups mashed potatoes (Leftovers) butter corn flakes, Crushed
1. Roll the potatoes into balls and flatten them. 2. Dip them in Melted butter. 3. Roll them in crushed cornflakes. 4. Place them in a greased pan. 5. Bake the balls until they are well heated. MEAT HASH 1 onion, chopped 1 red pepper, chopped 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 potatoes, peeled and chopped 1/2-3/4 lb cold cuts (mix and match is ok) or other cooked meat salt pepper water
1. Saute onion and pepper in oil in a large skillet until soft. 2. Add the potato cubes and saute another 2 minutes or so. 3. Cut your meat into bite size pieces (large or small) and saute another few minutes. 4. Add enough water to cover the food, then cover the pot and ignore it for a while while you try to set the table or make a salad or answer the phone. 5. After about 10 minutes, stir and season with salt and pepper to taste. 6. If it is watery, leave the lid ajar for a few more minutes to let the steam escape. 7. Serve to the hungry masses, who might want to add mustard or ketchup on their plates. 8. Congratulate yourself for salvaging your leftovers and your sanity.
BEEF ENCHILADAS 1 tablespoon lite olive oil 1 onion, sliced 1 sweet green pepper, sliced 1 sweet red pepper, sliced 1 yellow pepper, sliced 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 cups cooked roast beef, cubed 1 1/2 cups taco sauce 1 teaspoon cumin 6 flour tortillas 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon green onions, chopped
1. Saute the onion & garlic until the garlic is fragrent & the onion is soft. 2. Add the sweet peppers for a minute. 3. Remove from heat add beef and 1/2 cup taco sauce.
4. Spoon about 3/4 cup of the meat mixture down the middle of each tortilla. 5. Sprinkle with 1 tbsp of cheese. 6. Fold the tortilla sides up so they overlap slightly. 7. Place them side by side, seam side down, in a 11x7 baking dish. 8. Spoon the remaining Taco sauce over them. 9. Spoon the sour cream in a line down the middle. 10. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese. 11. Bake in 350F degrees oven for about 30 minutes. The upswing in prices over the past 12 months may have you wondering what will happen this year at your local grocery store. "We are on the verge of what may be one of the most exciting and game-changing years in the food world." Lempert advises consumers to watch for 10 major trends in their supermarkets this year: 1. Higher food prices - Last year's trend will continue, so consumers will place even more emphasis on ways to save money. Mobile app marketers will offer "social rewards" for groups that shop together - think of it as the virtual version of warehouse clubs. 3. The baby boomer influence will grow - Last year, the first of the 76 million-strong boomer generation turned 65.
