Hallandale Beach City Marina begins new era in Broward County boating
Hallandale Beach ushered in a new era in boating in southern Broward County on Friday with the opening of a new $1.2 million, 30slip marina at 101 Three Islands Boulevard. Hallandale Beach City officials, Broward County and State of Florida leaders celebrated the addition of available boating space at the grand opening. Constructed in partnership with the Broward Boating Improvement Program and the Florida Inland Navigational District (FIND), Hallandale Beach City Marina is the southern-most public dockage in Broward County. Situated on the DeSoto Waterway just north and west of the Intracoastal Waterway, the marina offers easy access to inland waters and the Atlantic Ocean. HALLANDALE BEACH STATE OF THE CITY - PART I
• FIRST OF A THREE-PART SERIES. HALLANDALE BEACH Good Afternoon Hallandale Beach Chamber of Commerce. I would like to thank and recognize President Mike Long from Crowne Plaza, Patricia Gennitti Executive Director and Tula Amanna and her staff from Flashback for arranging today. It is an honor to be able to address you all today. Many of you know how proud I am to be serving as Hallandale Beach’s Mayor. It is hard to believe that since 1999 I have had the unique honor to be a public servant in this wonderful city… the place that my family and I call home. This past election I had an opportunity to knock on many doors, meet with many condominium residents, business owners and meet many new residents and business owners that have decided to also call Hallandale Beach Home. The city that I moved to almost 22 years ago certainly has changed. My first experience with the city was at the old city hall over trash collection. At that time Mayor Eudyce Steinberg was thrilled to have a young person visiting city hall, even if it was for a complaint. You see, I had a problem. Once a week trash pick-up with one trash can was not going to cut it for a young growing family. She was shocked to even hear a young family moved in; let alone showing up at city hall. She wanted me to attend the commission meeting to voice my concerns. That was my first experience addressing a commission. Who would think that my son’s diapers sitting in the hot sun would result someday in me becom-
Mayor Joy Cooper ing a mayor? At that time we had 17,000 housing units with a population of 31,000 and the average age was 65. Some in this room may recall that every restaurant hid their sweet and low and we were considered G-d’s waiting room. The population was decreasing. Housing values were stagnant. That was 1990. Fast forward to 2010 and we have 18,000 plus households, a population of 37000 with an average age of 47. We are no longer a retirement city. We have changed. The numbers are very telling. We have always been an “urban” city. We have not increased substantially the number of households. The number tells us a bit more; we have changed to a town that attracts people…not just to visit, but to call Hallandale Beach home. Even with these demographic changes we have kept our small town appeal. That is why I moved here and what keeps many of us here. Even the people that I met on the campaign trail shared what they love about our city’. And while we have plenty to offer now in the form of shopping, dining and entertain-
ment, they all came back to “I like the small town feel”. Just recently a local business placed a new sign on their store front. It caught my eye. Not because it was new; not because it was colorful, but the wording stuck with me. HALLANDALE "THE FRIENDLY CITY" In this day and age of internet, blogging, texting, Facebook and tweets the personal connection can get lost. The sign made me smile. Even with many changes, we still have nurtured one of Hallandale Beaches strengths, that “Home Town” feel. During the past few months and preparing for this State of The City, I have been reflecting on just what this past election meant; not only to me, but to our city…most importantly the future of our city. City’s do not just happen! Cities are created by the people that live in them. They evolve and change. By nature, change is inevitable; even in cities. It is how that change is managed by its leaders that make the city. Is it battled with a negative outlook, lack of compromised or worse, fear? Or is change harnessed with positive energy, willingness to work together with courage to fight for a bold vision for the future? That is what I believe the last election was about. It was not about one good decision or one bad decision, it was about direction. It was about keeping a positive perspective. That is what people are drawn to. It was about keeping our “sense of place” …Hallandale Beach the Friendly City. Is it perfect? No . Does that mean we settle for less than perfection? No. When I first ran for office I was approached by an older
man after a heated debate at OB Johnson Park. He pulled me aside and said to me, “You seem like a wonderful and smart woman. You have one problem. You want to please all of the people and make them happy. There will always be people that will not be happy no matter how hard you try. Apply the 60 -40 rule and you will be ok. “ I looked at him and thanked him for his kind advice, but before our conversation ended I told him “It does not mean I am not going to stop trying for the 100%.” I am obviously personally happy with the election results, but most importantly we all should be proud; no matter how rocky the road has been. The election was acknowledgment that that we have been moving in the right direction. The voters also reelected Commissioner Sanders, brought Back Commissioner William Julian and elected our new Commissioner Michele Lazarow. The city has elected a great team! We have worked collaboratively on many issues vital to our future over the past three months with new energy and a sense of urgency to invest in our future. During the election, work at city hall did not stop. Changes actually evolved inside city hall. I would say “we harnessed change” with the retirement of Mark Antonio and by hiring our new City Manager Renee Crichton Miller. City Manager Miller has worked extremely close with our commission and staff over the past six months. She completed the 2012-2013 budget when Mark retired. While he laid the groundwork, she added her expertise and understanding of municipal
government to effect change. She made some changes that saved money and allowed the commission flexibility to go to the roll back tax rate. The city commission understood that residents and property owners are still slowly coming out of the recession. This meant either your taxes stayed the same or in some cases were lower. Like any other business leader I like to use benchmarks to see how our products and services stand up to our competitors. You may not look at a city in this light, but as leaders we must. We want to retain the residents and business we have and acquire and attract new. We need to be competitive. Cities provide an array of different services and not all cities provide all the same services. We also come in different sizes and different populations. The way we can compare is to look at the overall tax rate to live in a community as compared to like cities. Compared to other surrounding cities our tax rate is one of the lowest at 5.6833 mills. The cost of living in the average home valued at 180,000 in Hallandale Beach
is approximately $900 annually. Utilities are also below average at $93 and our fire fee is average at $145. While the cost to live in many communities continues to go up, ours has been stable even with the financial crisis. Over the past three fiscal years Hallandale Beach went through 30% decline in property valuations. Since 2008 we lost over 1.4 billion in value that equates to a loss of 8 million in ad volume revenue. Through the tough years we did not cut services. We did more with less while still paying our bills. Governments, like all businesses and households, have to address increases in the cost of doing business. Cites buy a different basket of services than a household or traditional business. We have a price index for that basket of goods we use. It is called the government price index. In 2012 GPI was on average 2%. This year may run higher with health costs changing nationally. As your Mayor I am committed to the grand plan of making our city the best!!! odds and continue to live vibrant and productive lives. I have long been a promoter of so many things, which have helped bring the attention to causes and to several fundraisers. That is what has always given me such satisfaction in my position. I was brought up with the idea that doing things for others is the way you approach life. I have always lived by that rule.
ALWAYS TOUGH NEWS TO HEAR In my 30 plus years as a columnist, I have done so many feel good stories about survivors and in that time - have never thought about what would happen if one of these stories and causes would affect my family. How would I approach writing about something that is closer to home than ever before? On June 12, 2004, I was handed the answer to that question when I was told that my kidneys were declining and that some day, I would have to look toward a timeconsuming three-day-aweek dialysis that would actually be the only link between life and death. Eventually, I would need a kidney transplant to survive. For eight years, I changed my diet and my philosophies about life. I realized that there would come a time where my 80-plus hours and four jobs a week would take a backseat to something I had no control over. That time is fast approaching, and shedding all the tears in the world will not stop what lies ahead for my family, friends and for myself. Just like most who are told of such pending doom, I began to research and see what I could do to make this Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) slow down. From nutrition to exercise, the only chance that I would have against this disease that fully engulfs your kidneys until you simply have no filtering system left for your blood, was to lower salt, potassium and proteins and watch my creatinine levels. Never before have I read so many labels - in the small chance that anything I could do would be a positive. There is no cure presently for this disease, and while the things that you do to help can only delay. It will not deny the fact that there are so many, like myself, who are waiting on a kidney transplant, and often wait for years for the correct match that comes from being part of a list waiting for a cadaver. At a time when we are supposed to be reaping the rewards of a great life - taking those minor lumps as they come news that I am now on the coveted transplant list is almost as terrifying as it is exciting. There are thousands on that same list who are looking for a kidney for a better quality of life. KNOWING ALL ABOUT THE
PROCESS Whether it comes from a living donor - family or otherwise - getting a kidney or any organ transplant - comes with no guarantees. Blood type matches, while they are a great indicator, doesn't automatically signal that the body will not reject the transplant immediately or down the road. You are also faced with taking anti-rejection medicines for the rest of your life, but that is a minor sacrifice, to staying alive. KIDNEY WALK - KIDNEY SUPPORT Last Sunday, I took the time to attend a Kidney Walk at Bayfront Park in Miami, which was sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation of Florida. It was a chance to see so many who are willing to raise money and awareness about what it takes to donate a kidney and to give support to those who have to live with this reality every day of their lives. When it comes to my survival, everyone around me knows that I take it serious and have done everything for the past nine years that anyone could possibly do. You would be surprised at how many people, who have been told that they will need a kidney transplant, are grossly over weight, drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes - while waiting for a kidney. Somehow it does't seem fair, but fair is word you lose from your vocabulary very fast when facing anything negative. THE SALICK FAMILY One of the more emotional stories of morning was told by current National Kidney Foundation of Florida Honorary Board Trustee Phil Salick. If the name sounds familiar to surfing fans, this is the same Salick family that still shapes and has sold surfboards from their longtime home in Cocoa Beach. A really great family with a story that anyone who is going through this could listen to an embrace. It's what family and survival are all about! The Salick legend in surfing goes back over 40 years - with Rick Salick becoming one of the best surfers in the world. Rick Salick's life, while it was much about surfing, was also about survival. A revered surfboard shaper and a feared competitor who competed on the U.S. and World Surfing Teams in the '60s and '70s, Salik was first diagnosed with kidney disease in 1973 before twin brother Phil donated his own kidney - and the good mission began. Since boosting their grassroots invitational into a national event, the NKF Pro-Am Surf Festival has raised over $5 million for patient support, public edu-

cation and organ donation. And while Salick was known globally for his tireless work with the National Kidney Foundation -- where for three decades he hustled all around the state meeting with volunteers to help patients get the care they required -- not to mention his and twin brother Phil's ultra prestigious four-day-long surfing festival held every Labor Day. After enduring serious health problems for nearly four decades -three times requiring kidney transplants from his selfless brothers -- the Florida legend and NKF Pro-Am Surf Festival founder, passed away due to complications from kidney failure last June. He was 62 years old. "What it was all about when he was alive was awareness and education about kidney disease," said Phil Salick. "We have carried on that fight to talk with many who have the disease and support them at events like this." PLENTY OF SUPPORT On a day where Salick and many of those who have carried on the name of Rick, came to Miami, there were hundreds and hundreds of others who supported friends and family members who are not only looking to one day get a kidney transplant, but also boost up the awareness of dispel myths about those who wanted to donate a kidney. "The one thing that many have to understand is all you need is one kidney to live with," said Michael Fernandez, who donated his kidney five years ago to his best friend, Andres Alavarez. "Nothing replaces myths than good education. It is a huge decision to make, but one that changes lives - in an instant!" Being a live kidney donor isn't something people just decide to do. First of all, you have to have it your makeup to want to give life to someone else. You also have to understand the process of rejection and not matching with the person you are donating the organ to. To me, donors are indeed the true heroes. They are the ones who keep the cycle of life moving without thinking about the

If you fully comprehend the process and wanted to be tested to see if you are a potential match as a living donor, there are simple steps to go through. Even to do research on your own when it comes to kidney disease, renal failure, dialysis or anything that would help you further understand the process. For those who are interested in testing to see if they may be a potential match for me - or others in the program, you can contact the
negatives. "It becomes such a mind game," said 10year dialysis patient, Marie Quintero, of Miami, who had two failed kidney transplants. "Everything becomes a mental game, but you have to learn to live with it. Your mind is 100 percent of surviving the fight." Indeed, the biggest hurdle is to get through all the ups and downs that the disease throws in your direction. PKD is not a disease you get from medications, steroids or any form of organ-damaging foods or drugs. It is something that is known to skip a generation, which means back in the late 1880s, early 90s, when medical technology was archaic at best, there was no detection or research being done.

If you call in the morning, you can usually get an appointment the same day, and if you just want to drop by while you are in the area, Ellen will do her best to get you right in. "What we are doing here," Bob said, "is offering the best hearing care anywhere, so you won't wait long to see me and you will be treated professionally and courteously." The hearing evaluation takes 15 to 20 minutes and there is no charge. "The first thing I do is to check the ears with our advanced equipment." A video-otoscope is used, a non-invasive device that transmits images of the ear canal and eardrum onto a monitor's high definition plasma screen. "I look in there and make sure there is not a lot of wax in the ear. Wax can cause a mild hearing loss, and sometimes removing the wax eliminates the problem! If there is no excessive wax, we go to the test room and I do an audiometric evaluation to see if there are some sounds the patient cannot hear well." The natural aging process and noise can cause a hearing loss, natural aging being the most common reason for hearing problems. Stereos, I-pods, boom boxes, traffic, and a noisy work environment all contribute to the cause. "It's the prolonged exposure to noise that does it," he said. BENITEZ WAS STARKEY LAB'S FITTING SPECIALIST Before coming to the Aventura HEAR Center, Bob was, for 13 years, with Starkey Laboratories, the premier manufacturer of hearing technology in the United States. He is a Harvard graduate, a licensed Hearing Aid Specialist in the State of Florida, and nationally Board Certified in Hearing Instrument Sciences. At Starkey, he was a fitting specialist. "I was the one to whom people like myself (a hearing professional) would send their patients when they couldn't figure out a way to make those patients happy with their hearing instruments." This experience made Bob an expert with hearing aid fittings. “The new digital instruments are complex and require expertise if they are to be properly tuned for a patient’s individual needs,” Bob said.

IT IS POSSIBLE YOU SUFFER SOME HEARING LOSS If the tests show conclusively that you suffer permanent hearing loss … Benitez said, " One out of three Americans over age 65 has a hearing problem and half of adults over 75 have one. Everyone over 65 years old should be getting their hearing checked regularly. Hearing problems, like having difficulty understanding what people say, can get worse if not treated. That is why it’s important to get your hearing checked. Once you know you have a problem, you can take steps to deal with it. Just as your primary care physician does not routinely check your eyesight, she or he will not be checking your hearing. In both cases physicians normally assume you are seeing a specialist for care in these areas. The sad part is that while most seniors take good care of their eyes, very few actually have yearly hearing tests. There is no reason for it! You do not need a referral to have a hearing evaluation— just call the Aventura HEAR Center and ask for an appointment!” Improved hearing leads to an improved quality of life. Many people who have a hearing loss become more and more isolated because they cannot enjoy conversations in social situations, but hearing help is now available that really works. THE NEWEST TECHNOLOGY Hearing aids have become very sophisticated and there are many, many choices. How is a patient to decide which hearing aid to wear? “It starts with a hearing professional you can trust,” Benitez said. “It is a good thing to do research and find
out what you can about hearing loss and how hearing aids can help, but when it comes to choosing a hearing aid, you need to follow the advice of a professional.” Many patients think because their friend or a family member did well with a particular hearing aid that they will also do well. “That’s not always the case. Certain types of hearing instruments are designed for particular configurations of hearing loss, and your friend or relative may have a high frequency loss and do well with those aids, but you have a low frequency loss and the aid is completely inadequate for you. As a hearing professional, I am responsible for evaluating your loss and recommending the appropriate hearing aid for your loss, lifestyle, and budget.” “Lifestyle is important,” he adds, “because a person who is not active or who has a very limited social life due to health issues simply does not need some of the advanced features available on the more sophisticated instruments.” Some hearing aids offer features designed specifically for very active social lives, and that is not what everyone needs. On the other hand, most patients would benefit from a hearing aid that does not whistle all the time, or an aid that makes noisy rooms more comfortable, or one that allows for telephone use without having to push a button. Benitez said, “many of the old problems that people had with hearing aids which prevented them from wearing them have been overcome by advances in technology, so even if you have tried hearing aids in the past and did not liked them, there are good reasons to take a second listen.”
And what about all those different hearing aid companies, which one makes the best hearing aids? “They all do,” Benitez adds with a chuckle, “it’s not the company, it’s the professional fitting you that is crucial.” There are several big hearing aid companies worldwide, and they all make very good products, they are all priced very competitively, and the Aventura HEAR Center has relationships with all of them. “It used to be one company was better at one type of aid and another at a different type. With the advent of digital aids, that has all changed. My experience working for the manufacturer gives me a certain edge—I have a level of training and programming expertise not available to most dispensers and that’s an important aspect of what I offer my patients. They have to turn up the volume and their spouses (or neighbors) complain that it is too loud. The world’s longest running musical show in Broadway history ‘Les Miserable returns to the Arsht Center
Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the same name, the musical is set in early nineteenth century France, as the plot follows the stories of the characters as they struggle for redemption and revolution. The Broadway production opened March 12, 1987 and ran until May 2003, closing after 6,680 performances. In October 2010, the show became the first musical in history to have three productions running in the same city, at the same time, London’s West End, London’s Barbican Centre and a special concert version at London’s 02 Arena. Les Misérables opens in a prison where five prisoners have been ordered to do hard labor lasting nineteen years for stealing bread for their starving families and for others who had tried to escape. Eight years later, Jean Valjean, prisoner 24601, having assumed a new identity, not only becomes a wealthy factory owner and Mayor of Montreuil-sur–Mer, but gets involved in many other of the town’s problems. The show was nominated for twelve Tony Awards, winning eight, including Best Musical and Best Original Score that includes familiar songs as: “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Who Am I,” “Master of the House,” “Do You Hear the People Sing?” “What Have I Done?” and more. He retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation after 32 years of service and worked for 13 years

(BPT) - At first glance, two men from different states and from different generations would not appear to have much in common. Joseph is a 42-year-old volunteer from Minnesota, and Alton is a 75-year-old accountant from Utah. What they have in common is that both are living with gout and have high uric acid levels. Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis in men and affects approximately eight million Americans. Gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid. This uric acid buildup is also known as hyperuricemia, the medical name for high uric acid in your blood. If you have gout, high uric acid can form crystals in your joints. When this happens, it can lead to inflammation that causes extremely painful gout attacks. Gout flares happen most often in the big toe, but they can also occur in other parts of the body and can last from hours to weeks. The pain is often described as throbbing, crushing or excruciating. For Alton, the pain of his first gout attack was so intense he thought he had broken a bone in his thumb. He was shocked when his longtime physician told him the pain he was feeling in his thumb was caused by gout. According to the 2012 American College of Rheumatology Guidelines for managing gout, a goal in treatment of gout is to reduce the uric acid level in the blood to a healthy level, which is below 6 mg/dL. gout may be managed through diet and lifestyle changes paired with treatment under the guidance of a physician. Cycling to help stop diabetes
(BPT) - The American Diabetes Association is challenging bicycle riders to be part of the movement to Stop Diabetes(R) by participating in the annual Tour de Cure(R), a cycling event to raise funds to help fight diabetes. Tour de Cure is a fun way to get out with your family, friends or co-workers and has routes designed for all riders from 5-mile family rides to 100-mile century rides. It is a ride, not a race, so participants are encouraged to go at their own pace. If you have diabetes, you can join the Red Riders. This special program recognizes riders who have diabetes the day of the ride with a red jersey. During the Tour, participants call out "Go Red Rider" to encourage and celebrate the Red Riders who are fighting to manage their diabetes and live a healthier life."The Red Rider program is a great way for those with diabetes to gather the strength, courage and motivation to live well all the other days of the year when we aren't riding in Tour de Cure," says Mari Ruddy, founder of the Red Rider program. Ruddy has lived with diabetes for more than 31 years and is the director of TeamWILD Athletics: We Inspire Life with Diabetes, which provides eTraining programs and a fitness training camp for people with diabetes looking to use endurance walking, running, triathlons and cycling to improve their health. Ruddy, describes the Tour de Cure as a celebration of health and wellness. "The Red Rider program gives us an opportunity to celebrate the hard work, dedication and teamwork it takes to manage this challenging and complex disease," says Ruddy. "When we give a participant a red jersey that reads, 'I ride with diabetes,' it puts a face to the disease that says, 'This is what diabetes looks like: We get on our bikes and we Stop Diabetes.'" Ruddy will be riding in the Las Vegas, Twin Cities, Chicago and Michigan Tours in 2013. Cycling is great exercise, but it is important to make certain your biking equipment is ready before hitting the road. Be sure to check brakes, grease the chain and make certain helmets still fit properly. Take a short ride around the neighborhood to ensure everything works and that the tires are sufficiently filled with air. If it's been a couple of years since the bike was purchased or cleaned, it might be a good idea to take it to a bike shop to have all the gears and brakes inspected. More than 65,000 cyclists are expected to participate in the Tour de Cure at sites throughout the country in 2013. All funds raised at the Tour de Cure events will go to support the American Diabetes Association's mission - to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. The fee includes electricity, water and Intranet Wi-Fi. A pump-out facility is available for use at an additional cost. Shoreline Foundation, Inc., of Pembroke Park was the general contractor on the marina side of the project; Tenex Enterprises, Inc., of Pompano Beach constructed the shore-side facilities, including rest rooms, security gate and parking area.

Typically, the roots are the lower two-thirds of the teeth that are normally buried in bone. Roots can be exposed by aggressive tooth brushing, irregular tooth positioning, or gum disease. During gum disease, bacterial toxins dissolve the bone around the roots and cause the gum and the bone to recede, exposing the roots. The condition of exposed roots is called "recession." The exposed roots can become extremely sensitive to cold, hot, and sour foods because they are no longer protected by healthy gum and bone. Acidic drinks can also further aggravate the tooth and contribute to further breakdown of the exposed roots. This is referred to as "acid erosion." Early stages of root exposure can be treated with topical fluoride gels applied by the dentist or with over-the-counter special toothpastes (such as Sensodyne) which contain fluorides and other minerals. These minerals are absorbed by the surface layer of the roots to make the roots resistant and less sensitive to the oral environment. Dentists may also apply "bonding agents" or bond a filling to the exposed roots to seal the sensitive areas and provide relief. CRACKED TOOTH SYNDROME "Cracked tooth syn-
drome" refers to a toothache caused by a broken tooth (tooth fracture) without an associated cavity or ad-
vanced gum disease. Biting on the area of tooth fracture can cause severe sharp pains. These fractures are usually due to chewing or biting hard objects such as hard candies, pencils, nuts, etc. Your dentist can usually detect the fracture by painting a special dye on the cracked tooth or shining a special light on the tooth. Treatment usually involves protecting the tooth with a full-coverage crown made of gold and/or porcelain. However, if placing a crown does not relieve pain symptoms, a root
canal procedure may be needed. In some cases, the crack is too deep and the tooth cannot be saved. In this case, the tooth is
extracted.
WHAT ARE NON-DENTAL CAUSES OF TOOTHACHES? Sometimes, a toothache may be caused by a problem not originating from a tooth or the jaw.
