The Corona Virus

The Super Bowl Effect!

1918 All Over Again? By Jane M. Orient, M.D.

Clusters of a dozen or so deaths may get nonstop “if-itbleeds-it-leads” press coverage. But the lack of preparedness for the really, really big threats may be met with virtual radio silence—until panic breaks out. The worst, possibly existential, threat is the stealthy, invisible one that multiplies exponentially—in the accurate sense of the term: 400 cases today, 800 tomorrow, then 1600, 3200, 6400, 128000, 256000, 512000, and 1.024 million after only eight doubling times. Biological threats proliferate—until they run out of susceptible victims. In 1918, the great influenza pandemic killed as many people in 11 months as the medieval Black Death did in 4 years. Ultimately, at least 50 million may have perished. Young healthy people, especially young soldiers headed off to the front in World War I, succumbed quickly. To avoid interfering with the war effort, the U.S. government denied and covered up the threat, preventing the implementation of public health measures. Since then, the world has gotten smaller. A virus that jumps the species barrier from animals to humans in a meat market in China can cross the Pacific in hours. And despite the expenditure of $80 billion on a National Corona Virus, Page 6A

The Super Bowl, drum roll please, after ten trial formulas in South Florida, after five times in the present stadium, (XXIII,XXIX,XXXIII,XLI, and, XLIV), after five previous stadium names before the sixth name, famously known now as the Hard Rock Stadium, the Super Bowl, in a delicious way, kind of like the omni present Everlasting Gobstopper, actually became a reality in South Florida again. Back in 1968 we got a taste of it. In 2010 we got teased by the multiple flavors of it, and now that we know it’s ensemble of jubilant economic growth effects on our local economy from LIV, we are chewing on ideas for how to keep it coming back. Now that it is back in the rotation, as they call it, we don’t want it to ever end. Our thanks to all of you involved and associated with the Super Bowl stadium “Rain Maker”, Mr. Stephen Ross for deciding to move forward without public funding, for submitting the application on time, and for agreeing to the NFL stadium improvement requirements,(at a cost of around 400 million dollars or so to make it a multi-purpose stadium). We like the “Rain Gobstopper Canopy”. Thanks for keeping your word to make all the qualifying stadium frills, comforts, and other improvements to the stadium that mutually benefit the surrounding areas and the roadways. You most likely knew the prestige, civic pride, and the economic boom would be worth the investment and in the end zone, provide benefits to the surrounding communities. Looks like it paid off with lasting dividends! By the way, we knew it would too. That’s one of the many reasons we have remained living lavida loca here, moved here and invested here. This is South Florida after all! We think outside the bowl also!! There are many ways anyone might look at the many effects of having the Super Bowl here. They can size it up one way or another, or see it as various degrees of prosperity in many ways. Some could say the Super Bowl being here enhanced the already esthetic environment and local economy. Some might even say it’s a marvel, the entire Super Bowl Experience that is, before during and after. Carnivals and all. You can even call it an afro-

A Nagging Cough Can Be Serious? 1st Priority Restoration Can Help, (1-800-617-1112) With the Corona Virus in the headlines a nagging cough can make you think twice about your health. That cough can be be caused from exposure to damp and moldy environments which can lead to a variety of health effects, a nagging cough or sneezing over and over. Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, molds can cause nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation. People with mold allergies may have more severe reactions. People with chronic lung illnesses may get serious infections in their lungs when they are exposed to mold. Ever wonder why you or your children wake up coughing and sneezing on a regular basis? The CDC may have the answer. According to the CDC (Centers

A-SECTION Super Bowl From Page 1A diasiac of sorts if you want too, a break from reality from the work week. It was and continues to be a natural uplifting experience. Well maybe. It was a gamble to some, metaphorically speaking of course. Anyway anyone looks at it, it synonymously meets the definition of fun and it creates a fantasy come true type of atmosphere. The Super Bowl is a game changer for our local economy any way you think or feel about it. Is going to the Super Bowl like going to the beach? That’s a good question. Ask anyone who lives or is staying in a beach front hotel or condo while they are in town for the big event. Ask the guests and even ask the residents that own condos and houses on or away from the beach’s. Ask who is happier and feeling that, “Super Bowl feeling”. Would you feel like you went to the Super Bowl if you got paid around 40K to let someone rent your condo for three days? That’s another interesting question. Yes 40K. Some condos are renting for upwards of “40K” for a few days stay. Hotel rooms are averaging around five hundred dollars a night. Parking is a different subject altogether. Some locals are making good money renting out their houses and rooms to Super Bowl fans. I heard from local home owner Kiel that the price was like $2000.00 per week for some areas and as you read above, as high or higher than 40 Large for three whole days!!! It’s like they were in the right place at the right time, as they say. Ah, “wisdom”, as Lenore says, (paraphrasing), *the wisdom learned from living in and traveling to happening places such as South Florida for the Super Bowl, can be captivating, (*captivating: . capable of attracting and holding interest; charming). Some adventures are worth it, no matter what the price. The Super Bowl in South Florida seems to fit into that category, the ,“You only live once” category. While you are here for the football festivity’s and are at the beach walking and shopping in the board walk shops or enjoying any of the attractions and South Florida sights, think about this..., you probably already do think about how, for a business, selling at full price is like being on the proverbial “Cloud 9”. There is a Super Bowl spending and investing effect that people talk about. Some of the effects are that shoppers are willing to pay full price and this makes the business community happy. It gives butterflies just thinking about it. It’s like being on Cloud 9. Is Cloud 9 “The Cloud”? Search the web key words, Super Bowl or happy counties, towns cities, citizens and businesses. You’ll see for your self. The Super Bowl spending effect mirrors that of going to the amusement parks in Orlando on vacation. You know this, of course. Fun equals full price at the shops and

vendors, full hotel rooms, and full belly’s from local restaurants. Thank goodness the restaurants have fixed menu prices. Our advertisers get to enjoy the influx of patrons to their shops and restaurants from the Super Bowl fans. You should give them all a try. That will be a win win!! Speaking of great restaurants like those advertised in the South Florida Sun Times, I hope we get a Boketto restaurant like they have opening this February 25th, in Wynwood / Miami and in New York City! (Hint to the local owners, Bruce and Andres). Boketto serves Asian Street Fare inspired menu items. Boketto is for consumers seeking an elevated alternative to casual dining, the concept offers Asian-inspired, bowl-based cuisine, and creative shareables. Fits right in with the Super Bowl ambience and our celebrated up and coming South Florida international community. Getting back to Super Bowl business and Super Bowl Effects, it’s easy to summize that we are more naturally inclined to, “let loose with our money”, or prone to rationalize that it’s worth it to splurge sometimes, at certain times and in certain places. That’s what we work for, it goes without saying that we can’t take it, (the big “it”),with us! So, we don’t begrudge those providing us the fun, making their money. They earn it just like us. Kind of makes sense/cents in a way. Tourism is the sound of music to many’s ears and pockets, and the Super Bowl is the biggest draw, even better than holidays like Mother’s Day and Fourth Of July, fireworks over the beach and all. My friend Andy says the Super Bowl is the biggest draw, the Chi Ching for South Florida’s local and tourism related businesses along the Dania Beach, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, Sunny Isles Beach, Surfside, Bal Harbor A1A Horizon of Hotels. Andy should know. He measured it in ice cream sales when he had his cream shop in the Hollywood Beach Hotel during the 2010 Super Bowl. He’s in the real estate financing, mortgage, and property investment business now, but his measurement of choice is still ice cream. East of the stadium are the beaches with magnificent ocean front and intracoastal living, with nice views. The area is very luxurious, to say the least, but how smart were the people and businesses in spectacular Aventura, North Miami Beach, Pembroke Park and Pembroke Pines to locate so close to the stadium? How fortunate are they that the stadium is so close, convenient and cool to drive by? The stadium itself is exciting and inspiring all on its own. The stadium has sports and other events throughout the year

Plant-based From Page 1A able, but every little bit helps! Inspired by the City’s Plastic Straw Ban, Gulfstream Park Village will be giving away multicolor stainless-steel reusable straws to the first 500 attendees. Why an emphasis on Plant-based living? According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) International Medicine in 2016, high animal protein intake was positively associated with cardiovascular mortality, whereas high plant-based protein intake had just the opposite effect, especially among individuals with at least one lifestyle risk factor. Many studies since then have shown that modification in a diet that reduces red meat shows a marked decrease in cardiovascular incidents, resulting in an increase in longev-

ity. As far as the environmental impact of a meat-based society, the Hippocrates Institute, named in honor of the ancient Greek physician who recorded the first medical case studies, printed a report back in 2012 stating that “Greenhouse gases attributed to livestock are more than double that of transportation emissions.” The report also noted that livestock are fed 35% of the world’s grains, while large pockets of the world go hungry. And that was back in 2012. There are countless books and a myriad of literature avail-

able online to know more about plant-based living and the positive effects of vegan diets; you can start with the International Vegan Association website. There also are many podcasts and software avenues that educate and assist in resources and competitive pricing for vegan foods and plant-based products. Corona Virus From Page 1A Biologic Defense, the U.S. is arguably no better prepared than it was in 1918, stated Steven Hatfill, M.D., and coauthors in their new book Three Seconds until Midnight. As in 1918, we lack a vaccine or wonder drugs, but must rely on nonpharmaceutical interven-

tions (NPI), and on public health authorities to track and try to contain the spread of infection. Accurate information is critical. Can we trust governmental authorities to tell the truth? Travel restrictions, quarantine, closing businesses, and cancelling public events have a huge economic and potential political cost. There can also be incentives to exaggerate

the threat, in order to sell poorly tested vaccines or drugs. The 1976 swine flu epidemic was almost a non-event; more people were probably injured or even died from adverse effects of the heavily promoted vaccine. Citizen Government & Future Leaders By Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper

It was brought to my attention that in my last column there were two errors. The Hallandale Beach POPS Concert will be held on MARCH 10Th not in February and tickets are on sale for only $35 not $25. For more information and tickets call 954-6246829. Last Tuesday I had the chance to stop in and greet the “citizen students” at the first class of the Citizens Government Academy. This initiative was brought forward by Vice Mayor Sabrina Javellana. The seven weeks of classes have been created to teach attendees about our municipal government. This first class was an introduction to our commission, administration, attorney and our clerk. In week two finance budgeting and procurement will be reviewed. Week three staff will be review Police and Fire Rescue services. Week four will be all about development services which includes planning and zoning, building permitting and code compliance. Then in week five there will be an overview of our Community Development Agency and Human Services Department. In week six there will be highlights about our parks system, open spaces and our Technology Services. The last week students will have a behind the scenes look at our Department of Public Works and our Human Resources and Risk management. As a public servant I was truly excited to hear about this wonderful program. Understanding about what a city provides helps residents to understand not

just how we function but where your tax dollars go. Many services we provide are taken for granted until the water doesn’t come out of the faucet, the toilet backs up or the trash is not picked up. We are the first call for help. We are often a safety net for the needy. We are a safe place for children to play or Safe haven for those that may be in danger. We protect people from unsafe buildings or unlicensed contractors. During natural disasters we are there with you during the storms and most importantly after. In addition to understanding our government and services it is critical that our residents participate. I want to thank those residents that have signed up for this class. They are taking part and getting involved. This past Thursday Beverly Sanders our Human Services Director retired. She has led the Hepburn Center into a new era. Over the pasts years she has worked to expand and maintain services for our seniors and many needy children. Like the directors before her, Mary Washington and Miriam Collie, she has been a fierce advocate for funding during the past years. This year the services were preserved for many seniors and students. The center is home to social workers that help connect our struggling residents to services including emergency services. They also partner with other agencies for resources and programs. Currently they are providing free tax services for households making less than 55,000 annually. The center also is home to an after-school tutorial program that links the center

to our local schools. The program ensures latch key kids have a place to go after school rather then being home alone, or worse out on the streets. The link to the schools makes sure their homework is getting done and they provide reinforcement to their daily studies.

While we are sad to see her leave the city if fortunate to be able to hire in house which will keep continuity for the center and the many residents that depend on the services we provide. Cora Daise has been officially hired by our City Manager. Director Daise brings with her 12 years’ experience in the department. She also has a long career in the city

since 1988. She has worked in Human Services, the Police Department and was an Administrative Office Assistance in Public Works. Her well rounded background and working knowledge of many city departments brings a wealth of knowledge to maintain the department. Join us in congratulating Ms. Daise. Stop by the Hepburn Center at

Foster and NW 8th Avenue right off of Pembroke Road. In addition to the Hepburn Center there is a Teen Center, computer room, exercise room and indoor basketball. As always, I am available anytime to answer your questions and concerns at office #954-457-1318, on my cell/text 954-632-5700 or email at jcooper@cohb.org.

HEALTH

Dr. Susan B. Fox, DO RPVI, FSVM is board certified in vascular medicine, phlebology, internal medicine and has been a vein and laser expert for decades. She and her staff are experts in Laser treatments.

What Is New At Fox Vein And Laser Experts? Over the past four years, we have been expanding more and more. We have always focused on veins and vascular health and still do. Yet, in the past four years, we have increased our service options and started offering more procedures and products in our office. We now offer a variety of procedures including lasers, facials, micro-needling and our own private label skin care line and they are all amazing!!!!! Come experience Fox Vein and Laser Experts in the New Year for the New YOU! What kinds of lasers do you offer? We offer laser hair removal using the Gentle Max Pro, what we believe to be the best hair removal laser on the market!!!!! It is an Alex and Yag laser that can be used on all skin colors. This laser uses a cooling spray that helps create a practically painless experience. This same laser can be used to remove, sun-spots, spider and small blue veins and so much more. We can help control acne by heating the skin surface with the laser and performing an acne facial so that we decrease the quantity of bacteria that cause those pesky pimples on your skin. What other lasers do you offer? We offer a lot of other laser procedures!!! We offer Resolve by Picoway which is a rejuvenating laser experience. It is a non-ablative laser that can be used to help fine lines and wrinkles. It helps fade discolorations such as melasma, sunspots, darkening of the skin due to hemosiderin or other causes and can be used on practically any skin color. The Picoway laser is one of the best and fastest lasers on the market to pull out pigment or unwanted discolorations. It is one of the best lasers for tattoo removal but can be used for so much more. We originally bought it to help people with discolorations from their venous insufficiency and have been helping people ever since. What if I don’t have pigment but I have scars? Almost every female in South Florida has had a “boob job” or “tummy tuck”. Whether the surgery was medically necessary or purely cosmetic, we can help refine and lighten the scars that remain. A few sessions going over the scars with the Picoway laser or our Vivace microneedling system helps lighten and refines the incisions overall appearance. What if someone has acne scars, can you help them? Vivace microneedling is amazing!!!!!! We have seen huge improvements in patient’s skin using the micro-needling system. The thought of needles seems scary but it really doesn’t hurt. The Vivace system uses

Radiofrequency and microneedling to help decrease pore size and creates microscopic injury to the skin surface so that it rebuilds collagen and elastin and improves acne scarring. People who have had scars and large pore size their whole lives see amazing benefit with this procedure. We can often combine it with laser procedures or facials and see even more results. However, even the results with just the microneedling in most people is AMAZING!!! Can the Vivace system be used for anything else? Yes!!!!! Vivace is a microneedling system that creates 36 micro-channels in the skin which creates microscopic injury in the skin surface. By doing this, it helps rebuild collagen and elastin in a natural way. At the same time, it uses radiofrequency to help tighten the skin and an LED light to either decrease acne or help with wrinkles depending on the color of the light used. This has a variety of uses from the face to help fine lines and wrinkles and lighten age spots and discolorations to the décolleté, the neck area that most people overlook or forget when trying to decrease the appearance of wrinkles. It can also be used above the knees or on the arms to help tighten the laxity of the skin as we age. It is not a face lift or body lift but creates a gradual improvement that is noticeable. Does micro-needling help with other things? Micro-needling and platelet rich plasma or stem cells have been used to help regrow hair and help with thinning hair and hair loss. This is a newer method to help hair that has thinned or been lost. We see great results in women with hair thinning and loss or traction alopecia from pulling their hair back too tightly. There needs to be hair follicles and takes a series of treatments. We have a system that the patients can use in between their office sessions which compliments the therapy. Do these treatments hurt? Pain is relative laughs Dr Fox. What I think is painless, someone else may feel. While most procedures cause minimal discomfort, we are here to help people who are intolerant to pain. What I tell people is we are not here to cause pain but we do want to create the most pleasant experience with the best results. We do have numbing cream and sometimes even anesthetic injections available if someone is bothered by a procedure. What else are you offering? We offer the Skinwave facial which is a hydrofacial. It is the best hydrofacial you have ever had says Dr Fox. Jamie our aesthetician is amazing! This

machine sucks out your skins impurities and then rehydrates and massages the skin leaving the face glowing for days. Celebrities use it to become red carpet ready. We offer a redcarpet treatment that combines the Vivace micro-needling with the Skinwave facial. The combo helps your skin radiate the healthy, youthful glow that celebrities have. Do you offer other aesthetic services? YES! We have a huge menu of facials and cosmetic services available. We offer everything from microblading to der-

maplaning. There is an entire menu of facials to help discolorations or acne or aging. We offer a variety of services and not just for women. How does Fox Vein and Laser Experts give back to the community? We offer free tattoo removal for the radiation tattoos on people who have undergone cancer treatments. We will help mastectomy scars for patients who have had breast cancer. Also, we offer free tattoo removal for sex trafficking victim’s

tattoos that have caused them to be branded due to their predicament. Fox Vein and Laser Experts also support many local and national charities including Make A Wish, Metavivor and several local schools and sports programs. Call Fox Vein and Laser Experts and start your New Year with the New and improved version of yourself. Before and 1 week after laser and Phlebectomies.

What Else Do They Provide? Fox Vein & Laser Experts now has an aesthetician on staff and are one of the first facilities to offer Vivace Microneedling, RF for skin tightening, wrinkle reduction, scar reduction, decrease in stretch marks and more. Harmful Mold & Mildew Can Be Controlled By Calling 1st Priority Restoration, You Are Making The Right Choice - (1-800-617-1112) Serious From Page 1A example, the “black mold” Stachybotrys, along with some other types of mold, produces toxins known as mycotoxins that can cause irritation of the skin and airways in susceptible individuals. Sometimes, people may develop severe reactions to mold exposure. Symptoms of severe reactions, which are uncommon, include fever and difficulty breathing. MOLD AND YOUR HOME Mold is found both indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. Mold in the air outside can also attach itself to clothing, shoes, bags, and pets can and be carried indoors. Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows, or pipes, or where there has been flooding. Mold grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood products. Mold can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery. With all the rain and storms we have been having these past months you can see a pattern of mold growth that will last. From leaks, flooding, and driving rain, mold growth is a certainty in South Florida. If you are concerned you might have a mold or mildew problem it is best to call professionals for a complete evaluation of your home. Your health is your most important asset, so just like you go see a doctor for a test, your home health needs testing as well.

Ever wonder why you and your children wake up coughing and sneezing on a regular basis? The CDC may have the answer. tions, including shortness of breath. At 1st Priority Restoration, this is what they do 365 days a year, and nobody knows how to prevent potential dangers like they do – and by dialing 1-800-617-1112 – you can save financially - as well as with your health! VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION There are some important ways we can prevent the spread of mold, and what you can do to get rid of it. Keep an eye out for hidden leaks: Wet spots on your ceiling, at the baseboards or on the floor are a telltale sign of a leaky pipe or roof. Your homes pipes are behind drywall, which can leave a small leak unnoticed. Mold can grow behind those walls and filter into the air through ducts or pipes. At 1st Priority, they can come in and assess the situation before it gets worse. Did you know that many air conditioners, especially window units, are susceptible to mold growth! They often trap moisture, creating a breeding ground for spores. Bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms create a lot of excess heat and humidity, especially here in south Florida – whether it be from a shower, stove or even a dryer. All three of these areas should be

NEVER FOOL AROUND WITH MOLD & MILDEW When it comes to mold and mildew, we cannot take those potential hazards lightly. A mold problem can cause you to experience dizziness, anxiety and depression, and even hallucinations. If you have been experiencing a diminished attention span or problems with your memory, it might be a good idea to have your home inspected for black mold by a mold remediation crew. For people sensitive to mold, inhaling or touching mold spores can cause allergic reactions, including sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash. People with serious mold allergies may have more severe reac-

well ventilated. Education is key to anything – and when our health is at stake – knowing that mold spores can lay dormant for years after they are produced and could begin growing at any time is extremely important to know. Because of this, regular cleaning and having 1st Priority Restoration to depend on, will certainly make our lives much easier. of the Eastern European Jewish diaspora. By the 1880s, Klezmer arrived in the United States with the wave of Jewish immigration around the turn of the century. It is a genre of music that is unparalleled.
