Mo’s Bagels offers a great place to meet and eat By David Volz
“A passion for the restaurant business and creating a place where people want to eat and hang out with their friends.” This
is what drives “Mo” Mohamed, the owner of Mo’s Bagels and Deli with locations in Aventura and Hallandale Beach. Mo opened his namesake res-
taurant in Aventura in 1995 and it quickly became known as a Jewish style deli with great food and a fun atmosphere. It is a large, roomy and comfortable
160 seat restaurant that is similar to the television restaurant “Cheers,” “where everybody knows your name.” Many of the wait staff are from various states
and countries. There is a huge variety of food and any kind of bagel you could want. The Mo’s Bagels, Page 6A
Insuring Valued Clients for the Next Generation The stories of Riemer Insurance Group and South Florida are inextricably linked. From the events that defined the region, to the companies that drive its business and enterprise, to the towers making Miami’s mark on a global skyline, the insurance agency has been the trusted partner at their sides. Founded by Stephen Riemer in 1978, the Hallandale-based agency grew along with the region’s insurance needs. From 1993 to 2000 Riemer purchased 12 insurance agencies, gaining strength by scaling the business. The company then switched gears and added to its growth strategy by hiring a different kind of salesman for a different kind of customer. Stephen Riemer brought on savvy sales professionals whose clients would follow them for their commercial insurance. In the early days, those were restaurants, hotels, country clubs, even a business that sold smoked fish to delicatessens. One by one, they became Riemer clients. Soon shopping center developers, office building owners, auto dealerships, retailers, and professional practices became the core group of Riemer’s client base. Today, the client base has expanded nationwide and, now Riemer Insurance Group is even the insurance agency for national insurance companies, hedge funds, banks, and other financial institutions. Then as now, clients were not joining a firm for commercial lines, personal lines, and employee benefits. They were getting a partner. “My father always said to serve your clients

When Brian returned to South Florida, he left behind a wholly different career. With his economics degree from Harvard University, and his MBA from Wharton, Brian had pursued investment banking with Peter J. Solomon Company and private equity with Audax Group. It was

his master’s focus on entrepreneurship and family business that convinced Brian he could lead the family business and help the closely held companies that they called clients. “My father built a practice that advises clients on how to best protect themselves, using a private equity discipline to evaluate business models, risk, growth potential, and even their management teams,” he said. “I knew my education and career prepared me for this moment.” What Brian leads today at Riemer Insurance’s two South Florida
offices in Hallandale Beach and South Miami are 50 employees supporting more than 12,000 businesses across the region and nation. Commercial clients range from mom-and-pop shops to the biggest names in the marketplace. Harnessing innate knowledge amassed over its 42-year life, its in-house expertise is unparalleled. Riemer knows every client faces complicated insurance requirements and has unique financial needs, especially as premiums continue to rise. He’s partnered with “captive insur-

ance companies,” where for financial, tax, and legal purposes, policies are held by the insured members, who serve as both policyholder and the insurance company. This can lower costs and broaden coverage, while driving profits through additional dividends. The firm’s commitment to continuous improvement requires that its people pursue individually unique industry education, with little overlap so it builds its bench of highly skilled, multidisciplinary experts. “A rising tide lifts all boats, so as our employees commit to attaining higher education, the Riemer Insurance Group grows its level of expertise each year” said Brian Riemer. Some things cannot be taught, however. It’s called loyalty - to its clients and coworkers his team calls family. It’s never lost that Riemer Insurance Group remains a family - owned and operated business that suffered no layoffs or payroll cuts during the pandemic. Riemer Insurance Group is known for bringing value added to the table by integrating its client relationships with each other to solve problems and overcome obstacles. “We bring our client base of professionals including accountants and attorneys to assist those who need help getting over the fence. Then and now, we see the important role an insurance partner plays in helping people and companies get through the roughest times of their lives,” Brian said. “It’s about relationships. My dad coined a phrase years ago that remains true today. ‘Our business is protecting yours.’”

23% of young Floridians have relied on parents to help pay the bills since the start of the pandemic (March 2020).
Since The Start Of The Pandemic 1 in 4 Young Floridians Have Received Funding From The Bank of Mom & Dad The Florida State Bank of Mom & Dad is beginning to turn on the lending taps to children, signaling a shift in the way young Floridians are accessing credit since the start of the pandemic. The USAWillGuru.com survey of 4,500 20-29 year olds pro-
vides a snapshot of young people’s living circumstances since the biggest economic shock in modern times. As Gen Z moves into adulthood and millennials advance into middle age, an overwhelming trend has emerged, revealing that 23% of
young Floridians have relied on parents to help pay the bills since the start of the pandemic (March 2020). The survey revealed that young people are no longer tapping parents for non-essential purchases, such as vacation
money. Instead, credit is being requested for making ends meet for day-today living. The categories most parents are requested to help pay for are: Rent: 52%; Car: 22%; Groceries: 15%; Childcare: 11%. For those respondents who
have accessed funds from the Bank of Mom & Dad, 78% say there is no interest on the loans (with 5% saying repayment terms had not even been discussed). And for those who have moved back in with parents, an equally high figure (72%) say they are living rent-free. However, in a sign that it is not only young people being affected by the economic crisis, 52% of parents who have given adults children money since the start of the pandemic, admit that they haven’t been able to provide the full amount requested. The majority said that this was simply because they didn’t have the funds available, but a significant 1 in 5 admitted that they were not confident their children would pay them back. 32% of 20-29 year olds surveyed said the first place they would turn to cover a sudden $1,000 expense they could not afford would be the Bank of Mom & Dad. “We are living in unprecedented times” says Martin Brieger, editor of USAWillGuru.com. “The Bank of Mom & Dad is as old as the history of finance. However, what we are seeing now is a squeeze on both sides, with data showing a significant proportion of parents unable to provide the full amounts requested by children. We expect to see a trend of parents funneling funds previously set aside for inheritance to be transferred earlier than previously planned.”
Attention Hallandale Beach Be a Part Of The Solution To Greenhouse Gas Pollution We get it, greenhouse gas emissions are an intangible thing that most of us don’t think about every day. Those emissions, however, are part of our everyday routines and will make themselves more oppressively known in the coming years and decades. It’s such a big issue, where would I even start? Greenhouse gas emissions in Hallandale Beach come mostly from our transportation sector and the electricity used in commercial and residential buildings. In fact, almost half of our emissions (49.1%) come from the transportation sector alone. Focus on those sectors in your ideas and how the fossil fuels used to support those sectors can be reduced or even eliminated. There are so many solutions out there to reduce emissions and we simply want to know which solutions you’d prefer your city to pursue. I won’t experience climate change in my lifetime, so why should I care? Reducing emissions can have co-benefits that improve quality of life. Most of the solutions residents have shared so far would increase shade in our city, make walking and biking safer, and reduce flooding. What’s not to love about that? Of course, future and already

We’re already starting to feel some of the impacts and other impacts will be arriving before we know it. There isn’t time to kick the can down the road. When the person writing this piece is elderly, she will experience sea-level rise of 4.5 feet (she is 5.5 feet tall) and over 9 months of temperatures that “feel like” 100 degrees or hotter in Hallandale Beach. The Art Heist Experience: Socially Distanced Immersive Theater The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of MiamiDade County (@arshtcenter), Broward Center for the Performing Arts (@browardcenter) and Right Angle Entertainment are pleased to announce Art Heist Experience (@artheistexperience), an interactive, socially-distanced theater experience which takes audiences in small groups on a quest in and around the Arsht Center’s Downtown Miami campus and the Broward Center’s Downtown Fort Lauderdale campus to gather clues to solve a real-life art heist March 16 – April 14. Based on a true story of the world’s biggest art caper, Art Heist Experience is a true-crime walking show where socially distanced groups of up to 35 people move through five walkable locations to gather clues. The amateur detectives interact with a wild group of wily career criminals, slimy con men, rumpled artrecovery specialists, a possible inside man, a gentle psychopath and the larger-than-life but definitely real self-proclaimed “Greatest Art Thief of All Time.” The cast of exclusively South Florida-based actors, through conversations and scenes, will reveal clues to the detective audience that lead them on their way. Sharp sleuths will guess who the liars are and hopefully solve the case. No two performances will ever be the same, as the actors improvise with every interaction. Every good crime story has someone getting framed and Art Heist is no different, as the experience ends with the sleuths having the opportunity to become living art inside a giant picture frame that they can share on social media and by using #artheistexperience. The story is based on the biggest art heist in history, which took place on March 18, 1990, when two thieves disguised as police officers entered Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in the middle of the night, telling guards they were investigating a disturbance. Valued at a half a billion dollars,
13 works of art, including paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Monet were stolen. The $500 million pieces, as well as the robbers, remain at large today. Art Heist Experience contains some mature themes, making it recommended for ages 13 and up. The masterminds behind bringing back live theater, employing local actors and presenting it outdoors are creator/ producer Justin Sudds and writer/director TJ Dawe and Ming Hudson. Dawe co-created The One Man Star Wars Trilogy, One Woman Sex and the City, and PostSecret: the Show, which have toured internationally. Hudson is a physical theater practitioner, freelance performer, devised theater creator and teacher and instructor at the Canadian College of Performing Arts.
Tickets Tickets for performances at the Arsht Center are $43 (Thursday) and $48 (Friday – Sunday). Tickets are available now and may be purchased online at arshtcenter.org or through the Adrienne Arsht Center Box Office by calling (305) 949-6722. In-person events at the Arsht Center will be socially distanced and conducted according to CDC and local health guidelines. Guests can expect touchless digital ticketing, wellness screenings and temperature checks prior to entry and face coverings (over the mouth and nose) required for all attendees. Tickets for performances at the Broward Center are $39.50. Performances are offered in the afternoon and evenings, Tuesday – Sunday. Each detective squad
is limited to 35 and begins its journey at the Broward Center AutoNation Box Office. Tickets are available online at BrowardCenter.org and Ticketmaster.com, the only official ticketing service of the Broward Center. Ticket buyers for the Broward Center performances are encouraged to arrive at the Broward Center AutoNation Box Office 15 minutes before their scheduled time as the tour start time may vary in order to manage tour group size due to physical distancing guidelines. The tour is wheelchair accessible. Rain or shine. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is preparing for the day when it can once again welcome audiences to the theater. Ticket sales benefit the Broward Center’s Road to Recovery
Fund to support operations as the Center prepares for the day when the doors reopen, the curtain rises and the lights return to the Broward Center Stages. Health And Safety Measures Our focus continues to be on keeping our guests, artists and staff safe. We have implemented a series of new measures for everyone’s safety and peace of mind. Mo’s Bagels From Page 1A bagels are made fresh everyday and taste wonderful. You can have many toppings on the bagel, including smoked salmon or high-quality tuna. For Mo, owning bagel restaurants is not just a job, it is a real calling. Mo loves being in the food service industry. He has worked in New York style bagel delis for many years. He loves producing great meals and getting to know his customers. He also loves and cares for the people who work at his restaurants. Mo is from Egypt and still has family there. He began in the Deli business working across the street from the current Mo’s in Aventura. After many years in the business, he was able to buy a restaurant. “The most important thing is you have to like what you are doing and I love the restaurant business. It is like being a father. You must take care of your customers and your employees. You must keep the quality of the food very high. You have to make sure the restaurant is being run well,” said Mo. Mo loves the daily challenge of running a large and popular restaurant operation. One can see the enthusiasm he brings to the restaurant. “You have to make sure everything is clean. We offer a huge variety of food items. You have to get to know different types of customers. There is a lot of action and it is fast paced. I love it.” Being a part of the community is also very important to Mo. “We donate bagels and food to schools and temples. We want to help people in the community. Mo’s partner, Paul Kruss is very active in the local Jewish community. He has been a leader at the Jewish Community Center and the Miami Jewish Federation. When you come to Mo’s, you are considered family. You will see long time customers eating and hanging out together. The wait staff is professional and pleasant, and they will make sure you are comfortable. The meal portions are plentiful. There are plenty of egg and pancake combinations for breakfast. Mo takes pride in the restaurant’s white fish and tuna that go on the bagels and into salads. You can also enjoy corned beef, turkey, smoked fish, seafood salad and brisket of beef. You can have a large sandwich, Philly cheesesteak, wraps and knockwurst. There are a wide variety of bagels including everything, onion, plain, sesame, poppy, cinnamon raison, salt, rye, pumpernickel and others. There really is something for everyone. Mo’s is not considered a kosher restaurant, rather it is what is known as “kosher style.” It offers traditional Jewish items such as noodle pudding, fresh challah, Hebrew National hotdogs, blintzes, smoked white fish

Glenn Singer, the mayor of Golden Beach enjoys eating at Mo’s and will bring his friends to share a lunch. “They have great food here and it is consistently good. I love coming here to eat and the staff is very friendly.” Kenneth Bernstein, a Golden Beach council member also loves to eat at Mo’s. “They have a great menu here with a good variety of items and the wait staff is very good,” he said. A group of men got together to have lunch. Mohamed Ali (not the boxer) said, “I like the lamb
chops here and the kabobs. This is a really good place to eat.” Jorge Florez, who was eating with him said, “I like the salmon. I think all the food here is good.” The lamb chops the men were eating were large and tasty. This writer had an everything bagel with a piece of smoked salmon and some vegetables. The bagel was very tasty and so was the salmon. Around the restaurant groups of friends were eating and have pleasant conversations. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. Born in Egypt, Mo came to
South Florida in 1984. He began working at Pumpernik’s and wanted to own a bagel restaurant. He then began learning the bagel business by working at Bagel Cove in Aventura. He eventually became a partner at Bagel Cove. He then moved on to develop Mo’s Bagels & Deli at Northeast 187th Street. Mo has been sending money to his family in Egypt since he arrived here. “I have never forgotten where I came from,” he said. Recently Mo’s Bagel and Deli expanded to Hallandale Beach at 800 Hallandale Beach Boulevard
with a new 90 seat restaurant. It replaced a well-known bagel restaurant known as Sage Bagel, which closed in March 2020 after being at the location since the early 1970s. The restaurant was completely renovated. The new Mo’s features industrial style décor with wood on the walls and higher ceilings. The brick oven was rebuilt to produce even better bagels and a large food steamer was placed behind the counter. Local residents, many of whom ate bagels at Sage for years were looking forward to a new place for bagels.

When managing diabetes and heart health, building a consistent eating plan with the right balance can be a powerful tool. Healthy eating provides benefits for the whole family whether members are managing existing health conditions or not. This recipe for Baked Parmesan Chicken is packed with 30 grams of protein in each serving yet delivers only 280 calories. Hallandale Beach Update & A Bit of History By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper
COVID-19 Vaccine Information Update: Remember, as a City, we do not run, nor do we control sites. To get on the list for Broward, to make an appointment, call: (866) 2016313.To get on the list for MiamiDade, to make an appointment, call: (888) 499-0840. To register on-line, visit: www.myvaccine.fl .gov. You can also schedule an appointment at: www.Publix.com/Covid-vaccine/ florida. This is not yet available in Dade or Broward stores. Publix did the first round and they were booked. They reopened appointments on February 3, but I am certain it would have been fully booked too, since this article comes out on the 4th. A unique Facebook group started by a nurse also has some great information and updates about availability: SouthFloridaCovid19Vaccination Info. As we celebrate “Black History Month,” it has been difficult to come together due to COVID-19. This does not mean that we should not be reflecting on our own unique history and how our City has evolved. When I first moved to Hallandale Beach 30 years ago from Philadelphia, I recall vividly the big differences in South Florida and what expression the other “Side of the Tracks” meant when it came to physical segregation. In Levittown as a young
child, we were raised to accept everyone one as equals and I had never experienced hate crimes or blatant racism. None of my schools were segregated. There was a section of Black Americans, but I always figured that was how it was. To me, it was like the Italian section in Trenton. I did not realize until later in life that it was because of racism. When I moved to Hallandale Beach, the pocket of poverty, which was the Northwest Section; this truly opened my eyes to the impacts of segregation and years of systemic neglect. I have also learned that with the tragedy of racism, there is still a proud rich history in the Northwest. I had the blessing of learning a lot of the history from Mary Washington’s nephew, John Hardwick, he won the name competition for the area. He owned and operated “Top Shops” a Barber Shop Network. When we had casinos run, literally Meyer Lansky and the mob, were in the Northwest
Section, this was the place that many entertainers from all over the world would travel to frequent. It was a place called: “The Palms,” it was part of the Chitterling Circuit, where many celebrities were known to visit, such as: James Brown, Sam Cooke and Etta James.
John Hardwick’s Aunt, Mary Washington, herself was a legend and worked tirelessly to bring resources to our most needy. Mayor Lanner and his wife worked side by side with Mary to create the Friends of the Hepburn Center, raise awareness
and funds to grow these resources. The Austin Hepburn Center was created and named in memory and to honor one of our first black officers, sadly, he was shot. The center is now thriving in its new home on the site which was called Dixie Park, back in the days of segregation. Foster Road was a place of business and social gatherings. When I was elected, our City was fighting to create our CRA, which has helped to redevelop the area, there is still much that needs to be done and we are finally seeing some projects coming out of the ground. Over the past 20 years, I, along with Commissioner Joe Gibbons, the second African-American Elected Official, former Vice Mayor, Anthony Sanders, was the third AfricanAmerican Elected Official in our history, Vice Mayor Bill Julian and Mayor Dottie Ross, one of the first female Police employees in our history, who have truly fought to redevelop “The Palms.” As a note, many will say they

support the residents, but their voting records will prove otherwise. We worked with residents and Clergy members to rebuild O.B. Johnson Park, Foster Park and B.F. James Park, they all share in the history of our community. B.F. James was a black Junior High, it was named after a respected pioneer of education, Franklin James. O.B. Johnson was named after a City water plant employee, he took many black children under his wing, taught them life lessons and many sports that lead to state championship teams. Foster Park was home to a very small and rundown building, but now it is home to a micro-Black History Library. We continue to create a vision for the future in “The Palms.” The goal to preserve history while creating a new era for everyone to enjoy. While the history of segregation is a scar on our country, the rich history and lives of our African-American brothers and sisters need to be remembered and memorialized for future generations. As always, to make our City a better place, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns and ideas on my phone/text at: (954) 632-5700. You can e-mail me at: jcooper@cohb.org.
