By Suzanne Wallace Sun Times Have you been in a Miami Subs lately? I had the opportunity to visit the renovated restaurant at 116 Hallandale Beach Boulevard in Hallandale and was delighted with the changes. Even the name is different; itʼs now called The New Miami Subs Grill. What really surprised me was the inclusion of more healthy choices. Miami Subs has recently joined the healthy eating revolution by offering several healthy options on their menu and are partnering with healthydiningfinder.com to list those items on their

Along with all this growth, Beth David has also begun construction on a new mausoleum building. “Our goal at Beth David is to grow and expand to meet the needs of the community and families that we serve. As long as the needs of our families continue, we will keep growing and developing.” Says Marc Rubin, Area Sales Director. Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapels & Cemeteries along with Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert have been involved in the South Florida community for over half a century. What distinguishes LevittWeinstein & Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert is that these South Florida institutions are still operated by the third generation of the original founding families. Life is uncertain, and it's important that the final resting place of a loved one be agreed upon. Our fullservice funeral homes and cemetery are
proud to be independently owned and locally operated. We are not a public company traded on the stock market. Michael Blasberg, General Manager, said, "We have directors with over 100 years of combined arranging experience and are sensitive to the needs of families. We strive to build on our long-term relationships and create new ones that will stand the test of time." The services provided by Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapels & Cemetery along with Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert, though, dedicated to the Jewish community, are available to people from all walks of life. Although our cemetaries are strictly for Jewish burials, our funeral homes are available to service all faiths. Marc Rubin, Area Sales Director, said, "Whether your loved one is staying locally or transferring out of state, the funeral home is here for the needs of all people that we serve. The advantage of being privately owned and
managed is that decisions can be made quickly." "People make choices in life and plan ahead for many things," Rubin says. "When a death occurs, why place the burden on your family to make those eternal decisions for you? What if unforeseen situations arise, wouldn't you feel better knowing you made your plans beforehand?" Shari Bradley, Marketing Director, said, "One of the benefits of dealing with us NOW is that you're planning in advance, saving money and relieving your family of stress by having to make the last minute decisions when youʼre not necessarily thinking rationally." "Approximately 90% of the families we service have been pre-arranged," Rubin said. When you think about it logically, it makes sense because it is just another part of Estate Planning, like your Will; and you can handle your funeral and cemetery wishes at the same time with us." Rubin goes on to say,"What are you
going to do when a death occurs? It's important that each person has a pre-arranged plan. A person can set up a financial plan paid out over a period of time with no interest charges. One day you will need it, so why wait for that day to suddenly come? Long-term planning locks in at today's price and protects against inflation." Blasberg states, "There are no two fu-
neral plans the same. Increasingly, the Chapel handles special requests such as "Personalized Funerals" that celebrate the life of the person. In a matter of speaking, death is a fact of life and in those challenging moments you want a family there to
comfort you, to love, grieve, and remember your spirit. "LET OUR FAMILY TREAT YOUR FAMILY LIKE OUR OWN." Levitt Weinstein, Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert Funeral Homes and Beth David Memorial Gardens and Chapels.

Recycling will end up saving residents money HALLANDALE BEACH - Our city is always looking at ways to help reduce the cost of services to our residents. Cities are unique in that we are required through our home rule powers to provide basic core services that include police, fire, water, sewer and trash removal. Obviously, these are not the only services that are demanded by our residents, but they are vital to the daily lives of everyone in the community. Trash is one service that is often taken for granted. Until something happens to a pickup or the monthly utility bill comes in mail, typically residents do not think about trash. Times have changed. As elected officials we have been keenly focused on this issue on many levels. Residents also are concerned about the amount of trash they have and where it ends up. Recycling is something I have been doing myself for years. A good habit has to be practiced but it also needs to be available. When I moved to the city 20 years ago, Hallandale Beach was on the cutting edge of recycling and was one of the few cities to move to a single stream trash system. The city contracted with Reuters that provided direct sorting of all trash and garbage excluding white goods and hazardous materials. The trash was sorted and separated
with garbage being composted and all other bottles cans and plastics being recycled. After a few years, residents that moved to the area protested over the smell of the composted garbage and the plant no longer was composting. Of the five cities that had entered into the agreement with Reuters, we were the only city that refuses to settle a lawsuit filed over a breach of contract. We won that lawsuit in a $500,000 settlement. The battle was certainly a risk and it was certainly not without its scars. During the lawsuit the cityʼs main goal was looking at ways to cut costs for our end-users. The cost included not only a tipping rate for disposing of the trash, but the cost incurred to haul the trash. One of the solutions was to create a transfer site where trash would be delivered during the day and then transferred to the burn facility in Broward County in the evenings. No matter what precautions, con-
tracted agreements, payments to surrounding property owners, and environmental protections were put into place; residents were vehemently opposed to this concept even at the risk of increased rates. We continued with litigation and were successful, which made us what I coined the Lebron James of Broward County; free agents. While we had flexibility, we were not guaranteed we could contract for lower rates. At that time we entered into a contract with Kessler Consulting. They were hired to assist the city in negotiating a short-term transfer and disposal of solid waste contract and a single stream recycles agreement. The city entered into a short-term agreement with Choice Recycling Services. The short term contract was $62.50 from $75.41 per ton (The county agreement was at one time over $85 per ton). In addition the windshield time (time to travel from the city to the tipping site) was reduced from 52 miles to 3 miles round-trip. We were saving more than $550,000 in operating costs. This new structure allowed us to keep our $18.87 fee for residential collection for garbage and yard waste and provide an additional 64 gallon container for free. We also could provide an additional 64 gallon container for three dollars if residents needed three
bins. To date many people are unaware our city offers twice a week pickup for an additional $9.11. This cafeteria plan, as I like to call it, provides for the lowest rates and flexible services. We have also amended and reduced many of our multifamily rates to be extremely competitive to private haulers. The history does not stop there. While we were going through our contract negotiations many other cities through Broward County were also looking at their future opportunities since they were no longer obligated to continue with the County RRB service after 2013. The County rate has not been competitive. Since then the city of Miramar has been working on an RFP and has received two competitive bids; one from Wheelabrator at 52.50 and the second from Sun Waste at 53.85. These two prices are not available until 2013 and are also still under negotiations. Municipalities will be able to piggy back on the contracts and have been activity participating on the RFP team. In September the city took steps to cover our needs. We entered into a five-year renewable contract with 60 day notice prior to expiration and a one month termination clause. After negotiations with Choice we received a reduced tipping rate at 62.00 and will receive for the
first time revenues on our recyclables at $54 ton and $7.00 bonus on private haulers that use their facility. Currently our recycling rates to our residents are $2 per residential unit and 17.50 to 200 per month for commercial and multifamily. With our new rates these fees could likely be reduced in the upcoming budget. Meanwhile our city sanitation division has developed a program to offer free recycling to all condominiums willing to participate. The concept will allow condominiums a six-month period to work with our staff to implement a program that fits their needs. City Staff will come out and evaluate your property to see what types of containers or bins will best fit within the confines of your building. We are encouraging every condominium to implement this free program. Ideally, even if City Commission does not decide to reduce rates, your trash rates
should automatically be reduced. By removing recyclables from your waste stream, your monthly rate for garbage should be reduced while container fees for recyclables are less. This is a great and unique program. Many condominium dwellers have been asking for recycling. It is up to all our condominium boards to be proactive and do their part in helping the environment. The city is available to help provide you their expertise and the tools to implement your own custom program free of charge. To take advantage of this program please contacts our Sanitation Division at 954-457-1612. As always feel free to contact me at any time with your questions and concerns. Lauren Book was sexually molested by her entrusted nanny for years when she was a young girl. Lauren, who started a non-profit organization to build awareness for children who have been sexually molested, has made this her life's goal, getting the message out that it's o.k. for children to tell if they have been molested (www.laurenskids.org) Part of her mission to spread the word is to walk from Key West to the steps of our State Capitol, in Tallahassee. Along the way, people will come out to rally in support of her cause, as well as join her for parts (or even) all of the walk. On Saturday, January 21, Lauren will begin walking from the Aventura Mall and will be passing through The Village at Gulfstream Park (the area between Yardhouse and American Pie at The Village at Gulfstream Park). If you would like to support Lauren's message, please be at the event by 10:15 am.

ing in visitors from as far away as Coconut Creek, Lauderdale Lakes and several areas in between, this is now one of the prestigious celebrations around. As Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper opted to get out of the car she was riding in to shake hands and thank so many people who lined the parade route for coming to one of the premier celebrations, it was one of those cool mornings that brought out thousands. On a day that recognized Hallandale Beach Police Chief Dwayne Flournoy as the Grand Marshal of the event, the community came out to see all those who continue to make this such a unique area to work and live in. "Small town with progressive thinking," said Andy Gonzalez, a southwest Hallandale Beach residents. "If you need to know how important Dr. King was, all you have to do is come here and watch all those who celebrated his life." Gonzalez, who has attended the past four MLK Jr. events in Hallandale Beach, predicts that over the next few years, with many cities tightening their collective belts, it's this community that will continue to grab the spotlight, hosting this holiday event that continues to get bigger and bigger. One of the reasons why this event flourished through the years was because of the hard work and year-round effort of the City of Hallandale Beach and the Community Civic Association, which puts in months and months of planning. With so many floats and bands in an event such as this, timing is everything, and there was nobody who said a negative word on the over an hour parade that had Hallandale Beach Blvd. onlookers honking their horns in appreciation. In addition to Chief Flournoy, special guests included MarshallBroward Sheriffʼs Office Chief Nichole Anderson, who is the first female African-American Chief of the Broward Sheriff's Office. Another of this year's honorees was former Hallandale Beach Vice Mayor Bill Julian. From his fundraisers to countless hours of helping to feed those down on their luck, his impact has been unbelievable. Julian is this year's recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year. In addition to Mayor Cooper, Vice Mayor Sanders was on hand along with Commissioners Ross, Lewy and London. As he does every year, State Rep Joe Gibbons rode the parade route along with so many others who continue to make this such a special event. "It's all about teaching our children the impact Dr. King made," Tom Bellamy said. "I was a young man when he was killed, but I have been taught by my family how very important
Commissioner Alex Lewy.
that man was to all of us." Immediately after the parade, the scene shifted to O.B. Johnson Park, where there was the Battle of the Bands, several guest speakers, musicians, singers, dancers and community
information. Months and months of planning came to an end on Monday, and now, everyone who made their way out, understands how Hallandale Beach is becoming ground zero for so many local events!

BLUE STAR TAVERNA Blue Star Taverna owner Daniel Setton.
HOLLYWOOD - Fabulous glatt kosher food with constant ORB supervision, terrific live Israeli and other international music, and a chic, yet comfortable setting. Thatʼs what youʼll find at Blue Star Taverna, an exciting new restaurant and club in Hollywood serving kosher Mediterraneanstyle cuisine made with the freshest, highest quality ingredients. The large, attractive dining room in the completely remodeled restaurant, located at 2221 North Federal Highway, seats 150 guests at tables topped by crisp white cloths. Creamy Venetian plaster walls decorated with hammered copper artwork create a European-style ambience. At one end of the dining room, a curved bar offers a cozy spot for a cocktail or glass of wine. For those who prefer alfresco dining, a patio decked with greenery and potted flowers seats an additional 70 people, and smokers are welcome to indulge there. LIVE INTERNATIONAL ENTERTAINMENT, DELICIOUS CUISINE Hollywood businessman Daniel Setton opened the restaurant two months ago after decades of owning DSH Oakwood Jewelers. “I love music and I love food, and I wanted to open a place where I could combine them,” he says. “When I found this spot, I knew it was what I was looking for.” A stage provides the setting for live entertainment every Thursday and Saturday evening, featuring performers like renowned famous international Israeli vocalist Shalva Berti singing in English, French, Spanish and Hebrew, Peruvian guitarist “Daniel,” bazooki player Yosse Nahmias, famous international singer Eli Idan and singer David Ben-Hayon. At the helm in the kitchen is Chef Shayke Horowits “King of Hummus”, who has been a Chef in restaurants all over Florida, as well as in Los Angeles, and Panama. “I use only the highest quality meats, seafood and produce,” he says. “You canʼt have great food unless you start with great ingredients.” Issac Benarroch, the ORB supervisor, is on the premises every day, ensuring that guests can be confident that kosher rules are carefully followed. Everything at Blue Star Taverna is made on the premises, and meats

A selection of salads arrives shortly after a guest sits down, and few diners can resist ordering some of Horowitsʼ delicious hummus. FRESH FISH FLOWN IN DAILY One of Horowitsʼ specialties is branzini, a fish flown in fresh every day from the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. “I could buy it much less expensively frozen, but thereʼs nothing like truly fresh fish,” he says. “I love cooking Mediterranean-style cuisine because thereʼs so much variety, and itʼs both delicious and healthful. The menu at Blue Star Taverna allows me to be creative and prepare food that I know will please our diners.” If a guest wants something special prepared thatʼs not on the menu, Horowits is always glad to try to accommodate him or her. “Hearing someone say that he or she really enjoyed lunch or dinner is what makes the work satisfying for me,” the chef says. For dessert, guests can choose from confections like tres leches,

A cast of five women dressed in attractive black outfits, tell funny, sad and memorable tales about their families and loved ones through the contents of their closets. Gingy, a wise older woman reminisces about what she wore at on different milestone occasions in her life. Loretta Swit who portrays Gingy, is a howl as she takes the audience through three marriages, motherhood and what she wore the first time she had sex. Other funny stories involve dressing room mirrors and whether they could be distorted. There are also more im-

The mostly female audience finds it easy to relate to the stories although men have found it most interesting and hilarious as well. Based on the bestselling book by Ilene
Beckerman and directed by Karen Carpenter, is a collection of stories that uses clothes as a metaphor for matters far deeper than the average walk-in-closet. INTRODUCING THE ARP CLINIC AVOID SURGERY AND END PAIN
AVOID JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY WITH THE ARP WAVE
WE PREVENT MOST SURGERIES
Try our painless, noninvasive technique that ends chronic pain If you have been told you need surgery or have chronic pain, we can help! Read this to learn about a new, noninvasive neurological soft tissue medicine treatment used by professional athletes, that is now available to the general public.
AVOID JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY WITH THE ARP WAVE Chronic pain is debilitating, and quickly erodes quality of life. Now, a new medical technology allows many patients suffering from back or joint pain to avoid surgery and return to the activities and lifestyles they enjoyed previously. The ARP (Accelerated Recovery Performance) Wave is a noninvasive method of delivering a pioneering new branch of neurological soft tissue medicine that teaches the body to avoid nonproductive compensation patterns that cause pain, and retrains it to allow the positive progression of treatment that accelerates recovery and restores a pain-free lifestyle. The treatment works on all joint problems, tears, sprains, fractures and repetitive injuries such as carpel tunnel. It has been used by thousands of people, including many professional athletes such as Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas. The ARP Wave can help patients avoid hip and knee replacements and provide rapid alternative recovery methods. It is now available for the first time at the Wellco Care ARP Clinic in Hallandale Beach. It is also possible for patients to be treated in their own homes. A TOTALLY NEW CONCEPT “This is a totally new concept in health care delivery,” says ARP Wave inventor Denis Thompson of Minneapolis, MN. “All other branches of soft tissue medicine work on the area where symptoms manifest themselves. But that’s not the source of the pain. Ours works where your symptoms begin.” Pain from joint problems and injuries are the result of muscles improperly absorbing force. To try to avoid the pain, the brain turns to the muscles for protection. “The muscles react to the signals from the
brain by trying to eliminate the pain through abnormal contractions and movements,” Thompson says. “When this happens, the muscles no longer absorb force correctly. This, in turn, results in inappropriate compensation patterns that become imprinted in muscles and continue to cause pain.” THE ARP WAVE The painless, noninvasive ARP Wave treatment begins with a technician placing an electrode on the patient’s skin, where it identifies the signals being sent by the nervous system. “It is first a discovery tool,” Thompson explains. “By using it, we find the neurological disconnect that is causing the inability of the muscles to absorb force that results in pain. Wherever there has been trauma, there is inflammation and scar tissue, and that’s the area we concentrate on.” QUICK RECOVERY Once the source of the pain is correctly identified, treatment begins. The ARP Wave method consists of a series of painless treatments, usually about 10 of them, that are each about 20 minutes long. During the treatment, the Wave sends an electrical signal mimicking what the body should normally send on its own to direct force back to the muscles instead of to the joints, and to stimulate the muscles to correctly absorb shock again. “In other words, we retrain the muscles to do what they’re supposed to do,” Thompson says. Most patients are able to quickly return to activities they might not have been able to do for years. “Our goal is to help patients avoid surgery, as well as to replace time-consuming recovery methods like rest, ice and compression,” Thompson

ARP Wave inventor Denis Thompson, helps patients avoid hip and knee replacements and provide rapid alternative recovery methods at the Wellco Care ARP Clinic in Hallandale Beach. says. “ Accelerated Recovery Performance is, quite simply, a faster way to help the body heal.” HOW IT WORKS The ARP Wave works like this: First, it eliminates imprinting by the brain of nonproductive compensation patterns that cause the muscles to perform ineffectively, resulting in pain. The sooner the patient receives the treatment, the better. “By creating new pathways of communication between the brain and the muscles and reestablishing normal motor patterns early on, we can eliminate the imprinting more quickly,” Thompson says. Second, the treatment decreases swelling and inflammation by increasing blood circulation to the affected joint and limb. “This allows the restoration of mobility so the patient can get back to his or her normal activities and live an active
lifestyle again,” Thompson says. The cost is far less than surgery, and patients avoid the long recovery times and possible side effects associated with surgery. “The ARP Wave helps people feel better fast,” Thompson says. “Our method is not alternative medicine. It is a new, effective form of traditional medicine.” VIRTUAL CLINICS To ensure precise and effective treatment, technicians at ARP Wave clinics work through computerized technology directly with the expert staff at Minneapolis headquarters. South Florida patients can come to the Hallandale Beach clinic, or technicians can go to their homes to do the diagnosis and deliver the treatments. “One treatment is all it takes to prove it helps,” Thompson says. “Once you experience it, you’ll know it works.”
TESTIMONIALS For more testimonials, visit our Website: www.arpwaveclinic.com I had muscle pain in my lower back for years. I spent, and my insurance companies have spent, thousands of dollars by treating the pain (symptom) and not the injury (the muscles in my leg). My good friend and neighbor, a former NHL player and now agent, introduced me to ARP Wave. In one session last week, they identified the problem as a strained ligament in my left ankle By taping together my fibula and tibia (a job my injured ligament used to do) and using ARP Wave I am better distributing my body weight and am largely muscular pain free. I am looking forward to a summer at the cabin, doing all the things I used to do, and have not done recently. -- Tom Finnegan [Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl Defensive Dwight] Freeney is also using a device called ARP that is similar to a stem device to move the blood supply to the damaged ankle. The ARP operates differently from normal stem devices, but ARP has helped him in past years recover quickly from groin and hamstring pulls. -- Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, ESPN.com senior writer John Clayton and The Associated Press was used in this report. After 5 years and 15 doctors and no results, I came here and virtually am now muscle pain free. It’s nice to feel good again. Randy Hebrink, 48, Low Back, Neck, Rib, Shoulder Pain -Renville, MN I think the treatment is phenomenal. I came out of the University of Minnesota and was told I’d never play baseball again because of reconstructive surgery on my left wrist and with Ben and the ARP I haven’t had any trouble since. That along with my ankle this spring, they said I’d be out 6 weeks, I wasn’t even out a week and a half and I didn’t miss any games. I’m a walking case for Ben, but he’s helped me every time. Bad breath medically called halitosis can result from poor dental health habits and a sign of other heath problems. People that don't floss and brush daily are in risk of getting periodontal disease. Food particles can remain in your mouth, which promotes bacteria to grow between teet h and around the gum and the tongue causing infection and other diseases. Other causes of bad breath can be yeast infections on the mouth and dental cavities and gingivitis. Many other diseases and illnesses may cause bad breath. It is estimated that about 85 to 90 percent of bad breath originates in the mouth. This is because the properties of the mouth make it a virtual incubator for bacteria. On average there are about 600 bad breath germs found in the mouth. There can be some types of untreated dental pathology that can contribute to the problems a person is having with their breath. Any active infection in a person's mouth, such as those associated with abscessed teeth or partially infected wisdom teeth can cause bad breath. Teeth having extensive untreated decay can trap enough debris and bacteria that will become a source of bad odors. Your dentist can identify these problems or dental conditions.
Tongue: The surface of your tongue is covered with minute projections, which give it a furred appearance. There are also numerous tiny grooves
Dental Health and Bad Breath

running across its surface. That is where the bacteria huddle in root. Bacteria never accumulate on the front part of the tongue, which is always in contact with the plate. You are strongly recommended to brush your tongue after brushing your teeth. You can use either a regular toothbrush or special spoon for cleansing. A spoon can be done in a regular fashion, from the root toward the tip of the tongue. You are likely to be pleasantly surprised at the result of the very first tongue cleansing. Your breath will stay fresh all day long. Aside from the mouth, there are other parts of the body that cause similar bad breath, such as the tonsils, nose, esophagus, stomach and certain systemic disease. Tonsils – Putrefactions, (The breakdown of the bacteria in the absence of oxygen) the tonsils cause
bad breath in three to five percent of halitosis cases. Nose – Oddly enough, the nose ranks second in terms of sources of bad breath. However, the foul smells that originate from the nose are slightly different from the mouth. In most cases, bad nasal odors are caused by sinus infections, bacteria or foreign bodies in the nose. Esophagus – In this case bad breath is due to the malfunctioning of the valve located between the esophagus and stomach. This situation is usually caused by GERD or hiatal hernia. Stomach – Though rare, the stomach is a cause of bad breath in cases where are other underlying health issues. For instance, acid reflux and fistula are the only ways that bad odors can travel from the stomach to the mouth, as the esophagus is normally a
one-way tube. Systemic diseases this generally refers to non-oral conditions that lead to bad breath halitosis, carcinoma, diabetes mellitus, renal infections and failure. Fetor hepatics (by a product of chronic liver failure). Bronchial or lung infections, as well as metabolic dysfunctions are some of the diseases that can lead to persistent bad breath.
HOW IS BAD BREATH ASSOCIATED WITH PERIODONTAL DISEASE? Periodontal Disease or Gum Disease is the second most common (fundamental) cause of bad breath. Having bad breath is a very important sign that patients should follow up and go check with your dentist. When the infection goes to an advanced stage it creates pockets which are often so deep the person can-
not effectively cleans e them, making that person at high risk of bone loss or tooth loss. In most cases, your dentist can treat the cause of bad breath. If your dentist determines that your mouth is healthy and that the odor is not of oral origin, you may be referred to your family doctor or to a specialist to determine the odor source and treatment plan. If the odor is due to gum disease, for example, your dentist can either treat the disease or refer you to a periodontist, a dentist who specializes in treating gum conditions.
Here are some tips for our readers: Practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth after you eat. Don't forget to brush your tongue, too. Replace your toothbrush every 2 to 3 months. Use floss or an interdentally cleaner to remove food particles and plaque between your teeth once a day. Dentures should be removed at night and cleaned thoroughly before being placed in your mouth the next morning. See your dentist regularly - at least twice a year. He or she will conduct an oral examination and professional teeth cleaning and will be able detect and treat periodontal disease, dry mouth, or other problems that may be the cause of bad mouth odor. WHY IS SMOKING A RISK FACTOR FOR HALITOSIS? You are probably familiar with people who have "smoker's breath." While even though the precise odor associated with smoking depends on a number of factors, a great part of it is directly related to the tar, nicotine, and other foul smelling substances derived from tobacco's smoke that accumulates on a person's teeth and
oral soft tissues (tongue, cheeks, gums) Once again, while this type of breath malodor can be a problem, this is not the precise type of bad breath we address on the pages of this topic. Short of quitting smoking there is no effective way to totally eliminate smoker's breath, although immaculate oral hygiene can help to minimize it. As a contributing risk factor, the act of smoking does have a drying effect on oral tissues also decreased moisture in the mouth. We recommend strongly that those people who smoke visit their dentist at least every 3 months to have it checked.
DENTURES CAUSING BAD BREATH Dentures are an artificial prosthesis that can become filled with bacteria that cause breath odor. Like natural teeth, dentures have spaces where food particles can become trapped. Not only is this a problem, but also the acrylic material has many microscopic pores where bacteria can hide and cause bad breath. Many people use dentures to take care of problems with their teeth. We recommend dental implants. One of the best things about dental implants is that they will look more realistic than that of other types of dentures. Dentures may look too plastic, and in many cases, it is apparent that a person is using them. Whereas, dental implants are more realistic in their appearance. Living with Depression - What You Need to Know about Treatment
(ARA) - Do you or does someone you know constantly feel sad, empty, tired, or have difficulty concentrating? Have you lost interest in activities that once made you happy? Do you think you may be depressed but don't know how to talk about it? If so, you are not alone. More than 15 million Americans suffer from a serious condition known as Major Depressive Disorder. Dr. Prakash Masand, Consulting Professor of Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center, has answered some important questions to help you or a loved one determine if talking to a healthcare provider about your depression symptoms is needed. Q: What is Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)? A: Major Depressive Disorder, or MDD, is a serious medical condition requiring treatment. More than 15 million Americans suffer from MDD, about 7.3% of the adult U.S. population. Despite the seriousness of the condition, nearly 50% of people with MDD do not receive treatment.
Q: How do you get MDD? A: There is no known single cause of MDD. Psychological, biological, and environmental factors may all contribute, but whatever the cause, scientific research has firmly established that MDD is a biological, medical illness. Scientists believe that people who suffer from MDD have an imbalance in certain brain chemicals. However, MDD is treatable with antidepressant medications that improve the function of these neurotransmitters. There may also be an increased risk for developing depression when there is a family history of the illness, but not everyone with a family history develops depression. Q: How can I tell if I have MDD, or if someone I know has it? A: Sufferers of MDD may display a lack of interest in or pleasure
from activities they once enjoyed, and may be persistently sad or in an irritable mood with noticeable changes in sleep, appetite, and energy. They may have difficulty thinking, concentrating, or remembering. They may think or talk about feelings of guilt, worthlessness and emptiness, or death. Sometimes these feelings can be so severe they turn into physical symptoms, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain, that do not respond well to treatment.
Q: How do I get help? A: There are a number of treatment options for MDD. The majority of people diagnosed with MDD can be effectively treated. Speak with your healthcare provider to determine if you are a candidate for antidepressant treatment. Along with medication, seeking the help of a healthcare provider for talk therapy treatment can help many individuals manage symptoms of depression. Q: Are there any recently approved antidepressants? A: Yes. VIIBRYD® (vilazadone HCl) received approval from the FDA in 2011 and is available in pharmacies. VIIBRYD is the first and only FDA-approved selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and 5HT1A receptor partial agonist for the treatment of adults with Major Depressive Disorder. The mechanism of the antidepressant effect is not fully understood but is thought to be related to its enhancement of serotonergic activity in the central nervous system (CNS) through selective inhibition of serotonin reuptake. VIIBRYD is also a partial agonist at serotonergic 5-HT1A receptors; however, the net result of this action on serotonergic transmission and its role in antidepressant effect of VIIBRYD are unknown. Talk to your doctor about the benefits of treatment with VIIBRYD and visit the website www.viibrydhcp.com.
IMPORTANT RISK INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about VIIBRYD? VIIBRYD and other antidepressant medicines may cause serious side effects. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the symptoms described below, or call 911 if there is an emergency. SUICIDALITY AND ANTIDEPRESSANT DRUGS Antidepressants increased the risk compared to placebo of suicidal thinking and behavior (suicidality) in children, teens, and young adults. Depression and certain other psychiatric disorders are themselves associated with increases in the risk of suicide. Patients of all ages who are started on antidepressant therapy should be monitored appropriately and observed closely for clinical worsening, suicidality, or unusual changes in behavior. VIIBRYD is not approved for use in patients under 18. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms as they may be signs of rare but potentially lifethreatening conditions: * Agitation, hallucinations, coma or other changes in mental status, muscle twitching or coordination problems, fast heartbeat, high or low blood pressure, fever or sweating, muscle stiffness or tightness, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Who should not take VIIBRYD? * Do not take any drugs
known as MAOIs within 14 days of stopping VIIBRYD * Do not start VIIBRYD if you stopped taking an MAOI in the last 14 days People who take VIIBRYD close in time to taking an MAOI may have serious or even life-threatening side effects. What should I talk to my healthcare provider about? * VIIBRYD may increase suicidal thoughts or actions, especially when starting treatment or when the dose is changed. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have suicidal thoughts, or if you become agitated, irritable, hostile, aggressive, impulsive or restless, or if your condition gets worse. * Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription and over-thecounter medications you are taking or plan to
take, including: * Medicines to treat migraines, anxiety, psychotic or thought disorders, or mood disorders, including triptans, tricyclics, lithium, SSRIs, SNRIs, buspirone, or antipsychotics; this is necessary to avoid a potentially life-threatening condition * Aspirin, NSAID pain relievers, or blood thinners (warfarin, Coumadin or Jantoven) because they may increase the risk of bleeding * Tramadol, mephenytoin (Mesantoin) or overthe-counter supplements such as tryptophan or St. John's Wort * Before starting VIIBRYD, tell your doctor if you: * Have kidney or liver problems * Have or had mania, bipolar disorder, seizures or convulsions * Have or had bleeding problems. VIIBRYD may increase your risk of bleeding or bruising * Have low salt (sodium) levels in your blood. Elderly people may be at greater risk * Are nursing, pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant Call your healthcare provider right away if any of these symptoms or conditions occur while you are taking VIIBRYD. Some may be signs of serious side effects.
Do not stop VIIBRYD without first talking to your healthcare provider. Stopping VIIBRYD suddenly may cause serious symptoms including: anxiety, irritability, high or low mood, feeling restless or sleepy, headache, sweating, nausea, dizziness, electric shock-like sensations, tremor, and confusion. What should I avoid when taking VIIBRYD? * Until you know how VIIBRYD affects you, be careful driving a car, operating heavy machinery or engaging in other dangerous activities. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking VIIBRYD. What are the most common side effects of VIIBRYD? * The most common side effects in people taking VIIBRYD include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and trouble sleeping. * Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of VIIBRYD. For more information, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. Please also see the Medication Guide within the full Prescribing Information.

Mount Sinai Medical Center Hosts 10th Annual International Alzheimer’s Symposium MIAMI BEACH – Medical experts from around the world gathered to discuss the latest breakthroughs in Alzheimerʼs disease treatment and diagnosis at the 10th annual Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) Symposium hosted by Mount Sinai Medical Center. The annual symposium, held this year on January 14th and 15th at the Miami Beach Resort, provided a forum for new information and in-depth discussions about advances in research related to the clinical diagnosis and progression of Alzheimerʼs disease (AD). Guests included international neurological experts from Switzerland, Australia, Canada and Netherlands as well as U.S. cities such as Miami, New York, Chicago, Boston, St. Louis, Charlottesville and San Francisco. This yearʼs event emphasized the early stages of AD and presented results from several longitudinal and cross-sectional studies that explored risk factors, diagnosis and progression of Alzheimerʼs, mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Attendees explored how these studies lay the groundwork for making an earlier and even more accurate diagnosis of AD. One of the main topics reviewed were guidelines for diagnosing a pre-dementia condition known as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). “People with MCI are at increased risk for progressing to AD or dementia,” said Dr. Ranjan Duara, Medical Director for the Mount Sinai Wien Center for Alzheimerʼs Disease and Memory
search and discuss ideas that can provide a greater understanding of the clinical diagnosis, progression and treatment of Alzheimerʼs disease.
Disorders. “Itʼs just like when we detect high cholesterol in people's blood and start treating it whether or not patients have any symptoms. The same concept goes for diagnosis and treating MCI in an effort to prevent the disease from escalating. The earliest possible diagnosis can lead to beneficial pharmacological treatment and non-pharmacological interventions for the patient, and thatʼs what all these medical experts from around the world are here to discuss.” A new addition to this yearʼs symposium was the Early Alzheimerʼs Diagnostic Workshop. The workshop explored how newly developed diagnostic tests, such as MRIs, FDG-PET and amyloidal PET Scans, can be used successfully in the early diagnosis and treatment of AD. Keynote speeches were delivered by four distinguished experts. Dennis Dickson, M.D., professor of Alzheimerʼs research from the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida spoke about “Atypical Neuropathological Presentations of Alzheimerʼs”. Adriano Aguzzi, M.D., Ph.D, professor and chair of the department of pathology at the University of Zurich in Switzerland ad-
dressed “Prion-like Progression of AD”. John Morris, M.D., professor of neurology from Washington University addressed the audience with a lecture on “Early Diagnosis and Progression of AD Using Information from Clinical Evaluation and Biomarkers”. J. Scott Roberts, Ph.D., director of the genomics, health and society program at the University of Michigan, closed out the program with a discussion on “Disclosing Diagnostic and Risk Information: How, When and to Who? Unless ways are found to prevent Alzheimerʼs or delay its onset, it is projected that 13 million people in the U.S. will have Alzheimerʼs disease by 2050. Since the development of criteria for AD twentyfive years ago, major advances in our understanding of the biology and early clinical features of AD have led to improvement in clinical assessments which have enabled clinicians to diagnose an earlier stage of the illness, mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The Mount Sinai Wien Center for Alzheimerʼs disease and Memory Disorders along with Dr. Duara will continue to host this annual symposium so physicians from all over the world will have a forum to present re-

SPOTLIGHT ON HOLLYWOOD
Hollywood staff educates students during Treatment Plant tours
By Ali Parker Public Services Department HOLLYWOOD - On Tuesday January 17th the Southern Regional Wastewater Treatment (SRWWTP) plant received some very special guests. Over 50 students from St. Thomas Aquinas High School came to tour the facility as part of their environmental protection education. The first thing the students learned was the value of wastewater treatment plants. The function of the SRWWTP is to collect and treat wastewater from homes and businesses in our area. Florida, and most other states, uses sanitary sewer systems to treat their wastewater while maintaining separate stormwater systems. Some areas of the country use a different system that treats both waste and storm water together (combined sewer systems), but those systems are prone to overflows during heavy rain events which would definitely not be suitable to our storm-prone area! Wastewater treatment is also an energy-intensive process which means treating stormwater the same way we treat wastewater would not only cost more, but it would use more energy and result in a larger carbon footprint and additional air pollution. Another important idea that was discussed with the students was non-point versus pointsource pollutants. The federal government considers all wastewater treatment plants, including the SRWWTP, to be potential point sources for pollution. Therefore, plant effluents are monitored continuously to prevent pollutants from inadvertently escaping these facilities. Each facility has strict EPA and DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) approved standards and limits for discharges. Students learned more about the many tests our drinking and wastewater undergo when Students on clarifier during SRWWTP tour. they toured the Laboratory. Hollywoodʼs wastewater and drinking water are tested many times a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Various stormwater testing is also performed at this laboratory. For most of the students this was their first experience observing a professional laboratory. During the tour, students found out treatment plant operators are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to ensure the plant is always working properly. Students saw the treatment process from influent (wastewater entering the facility) to effluent (treated water leaving the plant). They made stops in the bar screen room where large solids such as rags and debris are removed from untreated sewage. They then visited the grit removal chambers. They saw how oxygen is added to accelerate the natural breakdown of bacteria. The remaining liquids are then pumped to clarifiers where additional sediments are removed. Finally, flows are chlorinated to destroy any remaining pathogens and directed to reuse or disposal systems. Students also saw how much of the plant and equipment in other parts of the City, is now run by or monitored using SCADA computer systems. SCADA stands for Supervisory Controls and Data Acquisitions and allows an operator in a control room at the plant to monitor temperature, flow volumes, and others indicators at various locations throughout the wastewater system. The Water Treatment Plant also offers tours to interested groups with advance notice. Those interested in how Hollywood’s water and wastewater are treated can also take a “virtual tour” on the department’s website: http://www.hollywoodfl.org/pub-util/tour-sewer.htm

Solving problems that damage your home and business
WATER LEAKS: DAMAGE HAPPENS QUICKLY It doesnʼt take much time for a water leak to do extensive damage to your home or business. In fact, it can happen just hours after the leak occurs. 1st Priority Restoration can find the leak and fix it quickly, using the latest. state-of-theart technology. Its noninvasive, infrared thermal imaging equipment can detect the precise location of the leak within a wall or up to 12 feet underground, greatly minimizing the area of wall or floor that needs to be removed. When the leak is fixed, technicians will fully restore the area to its original condition.
WORKING DIRECTLY WITH YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY To save the home and business owner time and money, 1st Priority will work directly with your insurance company. Its professional staff will identify and assess both visible and hidden damage, submit all bills, and take care of any negotiations. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the home or business owner. This helps you to avoid headaches now as well as in the future. The insurance company adjuster wants the best outcome for the insurance company, and may not actively seek out unseen damage that is behind walls or under floors. 1st Priority, however, advocates for the homeowner, and its technicians will use their skills and experience to identify even the hidden damage that may cause problems in the future if it is not fixed. HOW DO LEAKS HAPPEN? Some leaks happen when water gets in from the outside, such as after a heavy rain or flood. Others can occur within your plumbing system and will unnecessarily increase your water bill. Determining whether you have this kind of leak is easy. Simply read your water meter just before leaving the house for several hours or going to
sleep for the night. When you return, or wake in the morning, read the meter again. If no leak exists, the readings should be about the same. If the second reading is higher, you probably have a leak that is driving up your costs and may be causing unseen damage. If you suspect you have a leak, donʼt wait. Call 1st Priority Restoration immediately to fix the problem. IS MOLD MAKING YOUR HOME TOXIC? 1st Priority specializes in ridding your home or business of mold that may be making the air you breathe toxic. When mold exists, it can exacerbate symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments, as well as cause coughing, sneezing, and headaches. And some people are highly allergic to it. WHAT IS MOLD? Mold is a living organism that can grow very rapidly under certain conditions. It reproduces by emitting microscopic spores that float through the air and land on damp surfaces, where they begin to feed on the material on which they are resting. Thousands of different kinds of molds exist, and some are known al-
lergens. A few produce harmful chemicals called mycotoxins that can seriously affect many parts of the body. But all molds, in the right conditions and in high enough concentrations, can adversely affect human health. Getting rid of mold is vital to keeping the environment in your home or business a healthy one.
A JOB FOR PROFESSIONALS Detecting and removing toxic mold is not a simple process, and it should be done by a professional. Using the best technology and tools available, 1st Priority Restoration can get rid of the mold in your home or business before it becomes a serious problem. Mold can grow anywhere that moisture exists. Air conditioning ducts are the most common place, but it can also form behind drywall, under carpets, and on furniture and fabrics. And mold may already be growing on a surface that is not yet releasing enough spores so it is visible. The first step in eliminating mold is to do a professional inspection. Just as they do to find water leaks, 1st Priority technicians will use non-invasive thermal
imaging to find areas of moisture that are hospitable to spores. To make sure they identify the existence of mold at the earliest stage possible, they will do three types of testing: air quality, wall cavity, and tape samplings. The samples are sent to an outside lab, and results are usually returned within 48 hours.
GOODBYE, MOLD Once technicians determine that mold exists, they remove it completely. It is not enough to kill it, because injurious chemicals and proteins can remain even in dead mold. Permeable material such as drywall must be treated or replaced. Because spores are released during the removal process, 1st Priority Restoration uses an air scrubber to keep the spores from settling. Then, a special Hepa filtering system effectively traps the spores to clean furniture and other surfaces. After the removal is finished, 1st Priority technicians restore the area to its original condition. OZONE TREATMENT If your home or business has an unpleasant odor due to smoke damage or biohazards,
1st Priority Restoration can help. Technicians will use a highly effective ozone treatment to eliminate the odor and restore the air quality.
1ST PRIORITY RESTORATION: THE PLACE TO CALL 1st Priority Restoration does it all. Whatever the source of damage or contamination to your home or business might be, 1st Priority can identify it, repair it, and restore the area to its original condition, all while working directly with your insurance company. The company provides start-to-finish, 24hour service 365 days a year for repairing water, fire and smoke or wind damage, leak detection and repair, and ozone
treatment. Technicians follow through with debris clean-up, manipulation and packing, storage, cleaning and sanitizing, using the latest technology to restore your property and belongings to its preloss condition. To save you time, 1st Priority can work directly with your insurance company. 1st Priority Restoration provides the fast action and thorough service that are the most important factors in reducing or eliminating structural damage. Disaster does not knock at the door—it occurs unexpectedly. 1st Priorityʼs goal is to respond quickly and restore your home or business with the least amount of inconvenience to you.

Make over your boring breakfast with these tempting turkey recipes
(ARA) - Are you starting off your day with a bagel and a coffee ... again? It's easy for a breakfast routine to quickly turn into a breakfast rut. People often sacrifice a well-rounded breakfast that helps fuel morning activities and stave off hunger for a quick breakfast loaded with refined carbohydrates and sugar. The goal is to strike a balance: find quick and easy recipes that balance carbohydrates - derived from whole grains, fruits and vegetables - with a lean protein. One protein to consider for breakfast is turkey, which is available in a variety of breakfastfriendly and often gluten-free cuts, including links, bacon and ground. JennieO offers many quick and easy breakfast recipes on SwitchToTurkey.com and jennieo.com. "It's time for Americans to drop their

soggy cereal, pudge-inducing pastries and boring granola," says Barry Lynch of the JennieO Turkey Store. "The new year is a perfect time to start each day right with a convenient, proteinrich breakfast using turkey." To help incentivize Americans to start the day off right with a nutritious and complete breakfast, Jennie-O is kicking off a Breakfast Hall
of Lame contest on SwitchToTurkey.com . Now through Jan. 31, consumers who visit SwitchToTurkey.com can enter the contest by submitting a photo of their uninspiring breakfast or a picture of themselves with their breakfast. The person whose photo receives the highest number of votes by Jan. 31 will win the grand prize: a two-week stay at The Biggest Loser
Resort, in either location: Mailbu, Calif. or Ivins, Utah. Complete rules are available on SwitchToTurkey.com . Find recipes - including a breakfast burrito, breakfast pizza and sassy scrambled eggs with JENNIE-O turkey sausage links - as well as tips on safe handling instructions for turkey on the company's website.
BREAKFAST BURRITO 1 Package JENNIE-O Extra Lean Ground Turkey Breast 1 1/4 teaspoon onion powder 1 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1 1/4 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 egg and 1 egg white 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce 1/2 cup wheat bran 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped 1/2 red bell pepper, chopped 1 (15 ounce) can of black beans, drained 8 whole wheat MANNY'S tortillas Put the ground turkey breast in a mixing bowl. Add onion and garlic powder, paprika, and pepper; mix thoroughly. Add egg, egg white, applesauce, and wheat bran; stir well. Refrigerate the mixture for at least 30 min-
utes or overnight. Preheat a large non-stick skillet to medium high and coat lightly with cooking spray. Add the ground turkey mixture and stir to crumble and brown, 14 minutes. Add bell peppers and saute with meat for 5 minutes, continuing to stir and break up the turkey into smaller pieces. Drain the beans and add to the skillet. Cook an additional 2 to 3 minutes. Fill tortillas with mixture. Additional sides, if desired, light shredded cheddar cheese, CHI-CHI's salsa, WHOLLY GUACAMOLE dip, lime juice, and cilantro. Serving suggestions - scrambled eggs or egg whites and fresh fruit.
