Lorraine Johnson spends his spare time not only thinking about others, but doing for others. Johnson is Hallandale Beach’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Humanitarian of the Year recipient for 2013. Devoted to helping the homeless and those down and out, Mr. Johnson can be found volunteering his time collecting food to provide hot meals to those in need at the weekly Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church’s Wednesday luncheon. Honored at City Hall last week, Mr. Johnson was surrounded by his family when receiving the award from Mayor Joy Cooper. Sol Pearlman's zest for life Braverman From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– he was playing in the street with a ball that bounced into a storm drain on the curb. Eagerly, he tried to retrieve the ball with a wire hanger. Regrettably, the hanger poked the child in the left eye which affected the pupil, cornea and optic nerve. His mother took the child immediately to the hospital where a doctor patched him up, but the eye, to his family’s dismay, would not work normally. “From the age of six, my left eye was partially closed and I only saw shadows. As a result, I became bored reading, cut classes and had trouble paying attention. I did not excel in school as my brothers and sister did and I turned out to be the black sheep of my family. As I became older, I did my best and worked in management and eventually found satisfying work as a caregiver,” Sol said. During an annual eye exam with optometrist Dr. Norman Hershkovich in Fort Lauderdale, Sol asked the doctor about his eye trauma from childhood. “The doctor said he knows of an ophthalmologist who might who will be able to help me. At first, I thought the doctor was kidding because fifteen doctors previously said nothing could be done with my one eye and to just leave it alone.” Sol followed up and made an appointment with Dr. Stanley Braverman. After a thorough eye examination and evaluation, Dr. Braverman determined that the injury had caused a corneal laceration and Sol had severe corneal astigmatism because of the injury. Sol also had cataracts in both eyes. Dr Braverman explained that by removing the cataract and by implanting a Toric Lens for astigmatism in his left eye, as well as by doing additional astigmatism correcting incisions in the cornea, this would be able to improve the vision in his eye as well as correct the severe astigmatism from the childhood injury. “When I heard this, it was an emotional moment for me because I’ve been looking at life through one eye since I was six years old.” “It’s been almost a year since I had the successful cataract operation in both eyes. My left eye has the Toric Lens implant for my astigmatism and sees 20/30 without any corrective lenses and 20/20 with a mild prescription; and my right eye has the Tecnis Multifocal lens implant and sees 20/20 without any corrective lenses. I can read the smallest print on anything with no reading glasses and now have 20/20 vision even at night. Now when I pick up a book, I can read and enjoy reading and don’t have to use glasses.” Sol said, “I saw fifteen doctors and Dr. Braverman was the only one to say ‘yes.’ He is a real people person without an attitude. Having the surgery was definitely worth the money and I would do it again! Dr. Braverman made the comment that “it is the best feeling in the entire world to be able to help people to this degree. Over the last twenty years, I have seen incredible changes in all of our surgical procedures. Our surgical technology has moved forward by leaps and bounds. We can do things today that I would not have dreamt that we would have been able to do twenty years ago.” WHAT ARE CATARACTS A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses.

CATARACT SURGERY: What to expect Cataract surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. An artificial lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. City Commission and the CRA Board of Directors were given the first budget brief for the 2014-2015 fiscal year • The commission directed the city manager and the Chief to move forward with policies on body cameras for our police officers By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - This week the City Commission and the CRA Board of Directors were given the first budget brief for the 2014-2015 fiscal year. It is hard to believe that the first quarter is over for 2013-2014 and the new budget work has already begun. The first quarter was in line and on target for both agencies. There were a few highlights that have helped revenue. The city has been partnering with the Broward County Property Appraiser agents and going after false homestead claims. Almost 80,000 has been reclaimed so far and this means the tax increase collected will be reoccurring annually. The other highlight is our building department has been extremely busy. The increase in permit revenue will offset the cost of contracting for additional on demand contract inspectors. It also shows that the recovery is still taking place. Looking forward the city will need to address two major concerns. One is health care coverage for part-time employees working over 30 hours. Staff evaluated this cost last year but due to the change in the implementation date to 2015 we did not have to take action there are two alternatives to address this issue; reducing parting hours and adding additional part-time employees or paying the cost of healthcare estimated to be 800,000 annual. Currently the Federal government is looking at changing the regulation to over 40 hours per week. We will be watching this closely. In other business the commission directed the city manager and the Chief to move forward with policies on body cameras for our police officers. Many residents know I have been a fan of all technology to enhance safety in our community. After returning from Israel years ago I fought to get cameras in our parks and also in high crime areas. After a trip to Chicago for a Mayors Conference I had a chance to tour their traffic and 911 communications center where they have linked street police cameras, bus cameras and traffic cameras all together to move traffic and emergency vehicles. While there I also saw body cameras and how the technology was advancing. When I returned back to HB I spoke
with the Chief about implementing camera technology including body and in car cameras. The concept received a lukewarm reception. We have been implementing cameras incrementally since then. Commissioner Julian asked to look to vehicle cameras however one was installed and no more were pushed. Commissioner Lazarow asked a few months ago to research body cameras and we all agreed to have the chief bring back the item. As always there is a time for everything. On Monday we had a long debate about the Chiefs recommendation. While the commission agreed unanimous to direct the city manager to work with the police department, police union representatives and legal department
to craft a policy there were pros and cons raised. With anything new there is going to be angst. I suggested that we move forward with the camera and then reevaluate in a year. There were questions about privacy or the expectation of privacy of both the public and the police officers. The attorney confirmed that in public there is not an expectation of privacy. Standard operating procedures will have to be crafted to address when and where the cameras will be used. She also shared that the ACLU came out in support of the use of body cameras. The chief presented that in cities where cameras are unitized there has been a significant reduction in incidents where force is needed to be used and also police com-
plaints. To me it only seems natural that when people are pulled over and they know they are being recorded they will act differently. This will also help to enhance officer safety. There were questions raised as to what if a camera is not put on to retain the footage of the incident. The way the cameras operate is that they are always on but do not retain all that is captured until they are triggered. The chief also stated this
is like all other law enforcement tools. There will be a training time for officers to adjust to pressing the cameras to record the incident. The cameras will be part of next year’s budget or may be implemented sooner depending on what takes place with the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Red Light Cameras. There has been money set aside to utilize however it may not be used until the case is over. As a note the fines in question are only from

Focus for 2014 is on economic development , public safety and beautification of North Miami Beach. At its August 2013 meeting, the North Miami Beach Community Development Agency (NMBCRA) approved incentive programs aimed toward land acquisition and infrastructure development. City Manager Garcia is focusing a major effort in supporting its success. Economic stimulation plans include a Tax Increment Recapture Program, a Land Acquisition Program, an Infrastructure Remedy program and a 50-50 match program to incentify NMB businesses to improve the facade of their frontage. City Manager Garcia is spearheading an innovative project for 2014 called "Eyes on North Miami Beach." Every month, a group of city officials will select a neighborhood and walk the streets to assess the condition of the pavement, roadways, trees and landscaping to identify repair and beautification needs. Priority budget appropriations will then be reviewed. Ms. Garcia also plans to personally evaluate all City departments to determine strengths and weaknesses, and propose adjustments as needed to assure a strong team. "I believe that team building is the core of any success," says Ana Garcia. "My team is not only the elected officials and staff here in North Miami Beach, but all the businesses and residents that comprise this community. We all need to do our part to make this city clean and safe. To do that, we must have strong leadership, strategic planning, easily accessed vehicles of communication, and a shared spirit of pulling together to make it happen." From 2003 to 2005, Golda's Balcony earned Tovah a Tony Award nomination for "Best Actress" and became the longestrunning one-woman show in Broadway history. Not only did Golda's Balcony 2003 production become the longest running play in the history of Broadway, but it shows how Golda was brought to the heads of state where it put her in the position if crying for peace, where her voice could be heard. Golda never gave up on the State of Israel. This to her was like her first born child, that she had to secure the future for. Her work in high realism presents selectively edited drawings of animal subjects in the form of portraiture. Chosen images are “represented” in a stark, over-scale format, deliberately devoid of color and context to strip away all sentimental and stylized stereotypical associations. This process initiates a deeper contemplation and internal dialogue about the natural world and the relationship in which we coexist. Through documentation and faithful, yet slightly imagined recreation, Johnny Laderer shows in “Fast Fade” how the mundane, glanced-over and left-bythe-wayside are rife with meaning. Drawing from a local history and current Miami-micro cultures, Laderer chooses objects that are significant and humorous through object-combination or wordplay, and appeal to a collective memory of a place that has been exoticized and romanticized. Kristen Thiele’s imagery in “Smoke and Mirrors” is derived from the motion pictures of the 1930s through the ‘50s. She is particularly interested in how this era of film aligns with the concept of artifice via opulent and escapist themes. The subjects of Thiele’s paintings are about the fleeting, the missing, and the unattainable; however as
paintings they become the very antithesis of the ephemeral. Famed cartoonist Aline Kominsky-Crumb was inspired to do this series of portraits and related video on view, “The Hair Magic Reality Show,” by her mother’s beautician, “Cookie.” For years, when Aline visited her mother in Aventura, she would go with her to Cookie’s beauty parlor, “Hair Magic,” in North Miami Beach. Aline thought of drawing a comic about Cookie and her customers. Aline had to find a way to hang out and observe. Aline talked to her cousin Ilana, who often spends family visits while Aline is in Florida, and they came up with the idea of Ilana filming Aline getting a “Cookie makeover.” The artist is known for her work, as much as for her collaborations with her husband of several decades, legendary cartoonist R. Crumb. MLK events highlight a huge weekend in Hollywood • The City of Hollywood Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts will host the first annual MLK Basketball Tournament HOLLYWOOD - In celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. there will be a number of events in the City of Hollywood this weekend. The City of Hollywood Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts will host the first annual MLK Basketball Tournament at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 2400 Charleston Street, Hollywood. 46 teams have been formed with 500600 school-aged children from all over South Florida participating. The tournament begins at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, January 18 with teams competing in full-regulation games with each team guaranteed to play at least three games. The winning teams move on to bracket play where they will compete in 5-6 additional games to determine the Champion. Medals for the MVP,
the All-Tournament player, and The Hustle Award will be presented before the Championship Team Trophy is awarded at 4 p.m. The Annual MLK Fun Day gets started later that afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the center. The outdoor event is free and open to the public. Medications can affect oral health, because some lessen the flow of saliva, which has a protective effect on teeth and gums. Some drugs, such as the anticonvulsant medication Dilantin an d the anti-angina drug Procardia and Ad alat, can cause abnormal growth of gum tissue. Bad habits such as smoking make it harder for gum tissue to repair itself. Poor oral hygiene habits such as not brushing and flossing on a daily basis, make it easier for gingivitis to develop. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF GUM DISEASE? • Gum disease may progress painlessly, producing few obvious signs, even in the late stages of the disease. your body's immune system to fight off infection. Maintain a well-balanced diet. Proper nutrition helps your immune system fight infection. Eating foods with antioxidant properties -- for example, those containing vitamin E ( vegetable oils, nuts, green leafy vegetables) and vitamin C (citrus fruits, broccoli, potatoes) -- can help your body repair damaged tissue. Avoid clenching and grinding your teeth. These actions may put excess force on the supporting tissues of the teeth and could increase the rate at which these tissues are destroyed. Despite following good oral hygiene practices and making other healthy lifestyle choices, the American Academy of Periodontology says that up to 30% of Americans may be genetically susceptible to gum disease. And those who are genetically predisposed may be up to six times more likely to develop some form of gum disease. If anyone in your family has gum disease, it may mean that you are at greater risk, as well. If you are more susceptible to gum disease, your dentist or periodontist may recommend more frequent check-ups, cleanings, and treatments to better manage the condition. The dentist or hygienist may also: • Take an x-ray to see whether there is any bone loss. • Refer you to a periodontist. Periodontists are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease and may provide you with treatment options that are not offered by your dentist.

Bone loss alters the appearance of an individual’s face, resulting in a sunken, aged appearance and wrinkling of the skin. It can also make it difficult for a person to receive necessary treatment. When suffering from periodontal bone loss,
you'll find that your teeth will not only be sensitive but may also appear to be loose. A tooth that can wiggle even slightly, in the pocket of the gums, is a clear sign that bone damage is in progress. Without proper treatment, the periodontal bone loss will progress to a point where tooth loss occurs and, subsequently, denture replacement is necessary. In some extreme cases, the periodontal bone loss may result in complete removal of the fragmented bone and the subsequent loss of normal mouth function.

Boomers: Are you asking your doctor these critical heart health questions? (BPT) - America's baby boomers are a vibrant group of people who embrace the idea of aging well. A healthy heart is key to ensuring you can live life to the fullest no matter what your age. Even if you're committed to taking care of your heart health, the amount of information available can be overwhelming, and you may not be aware of the most important topics to discuss with your doctor. Perhaps no one understands this better than Dr. Lee Friedman, a radiologist from St. Petersburg, Fla. When his doctor told him he needed a pacemaker, his heart health wasn't the only thing affected; it could have affected his career too. Because historically pacemakers had not been approved in the U.S. for use with MRIs, Friedman worried he would no longer be able to work in radiology where he is around MRIs all day. He was also concerned he would not be able to get an MRI himself - a common medical diagnostic procedure - if he needed one in the future. Friedman asked his doctor many questions and learned that a Medtronic pacemaker with SureScan Technology was recently FDA-approved for use in an MRI environment. HOW ART WORKS In ART, the eye movements are thought to be conducive to sorting out problems quickly through increasing the integration of activities in the left and right sides of the brain. These movements also seem to help the client process information by producing a deep feeling of relaxation. Yet ART is not hypnosis. During REM our brains are quite active and the brain waves are similar to those when we are in an awake state. The main and crucial way in which ART differs from other eye movement therapies is that it is directive. The therapist focuses the client’s thoughts through interventions, most of which are unique to ART, such as Voluntary Memory Replacement / Voluntary Image Replacement (VMR/VIR). These interventions by the therapist actually empower the client. It is the information provided by the clients as they process their problems that leads the clinician in directing the session. The first of five “C’s” that contribute to ART’s uniqueness is “Client Centered” because the client is in control of the entire ART session and it is the client’s responses that shape the interventions. ART is also “Creative”, both on the part of the therapist and the client, “Conversational”, much like a traditional talk session, “Closure Oriented”, because it is geared toward helping the client out of pain or discomfort as quickly as possible, and has a
“Calming” effect on the clients as they work out their problems. The developer of ART, Laney Rosenzweig, says, “I knew the power of eye movements from my first session of using them with a client. While she was engaged in the eye movements, I directed her to go back in her imagination and speak to her younger self. My hair stood on end as I heard her make peace with her younger self.” It was the combination of eye movements and the therapist’s direction that brought this client’s problem to such a quick and effective resolution. Laney explains that “the experience is much like a regular talk session with the eye movements added to help clients quickly process the information they need to resolve their issues. Clients leave feeling that a weight has been lifted and a wonderful change has been made. They usually find healing in as few as one or two sessions in which the rapid eye movements are used and it is a drug free therapy.” POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER Do you have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? Are my numbers normal for cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose and body mass index? Similar to how a roadmap guides you from point A to point B, the results of preventive screenings give your doctor insight on your heart health today and where it might be in the future. Important screenings and numbers to know include cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose and body mass index. Ask your doctor if you're in the normal range or if you should make lifestyle changes. 3. What foods and supplements can I take to sup-
port heart health? Diet plays an important role in the health of the heart, and boomers who eat nutritious meals can help keep their heart beating strong for years to come. Foods known to support heart health include anything containing whole grain, fresh fruits such as berries and oranges, and fresh vegetables like kale, carrots and tomatoes. Also ask your doctor about hearthealthy supplements that might be a good addition to your diet, such as an omega-3 or vitamin D supplement. 4. What are some exercises and physical activities I should consider? Just like your biceps or your calves, your heart is a muscle, and therefore it needs to be exercised to stay strong. Talk with your doctor about your current level of physical activity and what exercises you should add to your routine. Even small changes can have a big impact on maintaining appropriate body weight and heart health. Try taking the stairs instead of the elevator or parking in the back of the lot rather than the front - you'll instantly boost your physical activity. 5. Will I ever need a pacemaker? You may not think you'll ever need a pacemaker, but statistics show that the number of people getting them is on the rise. If you are diagnosed with a slow heart beat - also known as bradycardia - you may need a pacemaker. Remember, an estimated 50 to 75 percent of people with a pacemaker may need to undergo an MRI scan at some point of their lives.

Symptoms of anxiety and increased emotional arousal may include: • Irritability or anger • Overwhelming guilt or shame • Self-destructive behavior, such as drinking too much

Deese featured speaker at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, Festival • Mayor Deese, a troubled youth, turned his life around to become a pillar of his community Author and five-term Marshville, NC, Mayor Franklin D. Deese will be the featured speaker at the Hallandale Beach and Community Civic Association Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Festival, Monday, Jan. 20. The parade steps off at 10 a.m., with the festival beginning at noon. Mayor Deese will speak at 1 p.m. in the O.B. Johnson Audnasium, 900 NW 8th Avenue. Mayor Deese penned his autobiography, “Inmate to Mayor” (Total Publishing and Media), to

chronicle the struggles of a troubled North Carolina youth who turned his life around to become a pillar of the community. At 18 years old, Franklin Deese was arrested, charged with robbery, convicted and
sentenced to prison. He was released from prison in 1989. Taking a page from the teachings of Dr. King, Mayor Deese overcame adversity and climbed to the summit of the community. Honored by the North Carolina Governor for his civic involvement and leadership, Mayor Deese was first elected in 2005 and has been reelected five times. The address will be part of the City and Community Civic Association annual observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The day begins with

Be sure to have plenty of drink supplies on hand, and plan
on everyone needing extra liquids to quench their thirst from yelling and cheering on the favorite team. * Serve the perfect game-watching foods Rooting for the team is exhausting work, and the fans at your party are going to need good sustenance to keep going. As the perfect host, you don't have to spend your entire time in the kitchen and miss out on the game. Try blending together Hungry Jack Hashbrown Potatoes with chili for a dip that can be served warm during the first half, or put into the oven during a commercial in time for the halftime break. Hungry Jack Hashbrowns are ready to use, fully seasoned and cook perfectly crispy every time. They are made of 100 percent Idahoan potatoes and do not require refrigeration. Try them in the following game-day
recipe: GAME DAY HASHBROWN CHILI DIP 1 carton (4.2 oz.) Hungry Jack Premium or Cheesy Hashbrown Potatoes 2 cups shredded cheddar or Monterey jack cheese (regular or reduced fat) 1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened (regular or reduced fat) 1 can (14 oz.) chili 1 cup frozen or canned corn kernels 1 can (10 oz.) Southwest-style diced tomatoes, drained 1/4 cup sliced green onions Tortillas or tortilla chips Hot sauce (optional) Directions: Heat oven to 400 F. Fill hashbrowns carton to fill line with hot tap water. Let stand 12 minutes. Drain any excess water. Combine hashbrowns and cheese in a bowl
and set aside. Spread softened cream cheese on the bottom of a 2quart or 9 by 9-inch casserole dish. Layer chili, corn, tomatoes and green onion over cream cheese. Spread hashbrown mixture over the top of the casserole; spray top of potatoes generously with cooking spray. Bake until bubbly and golden brown, about 20 minutes.
