Remembring the tragic loss of innocent lives in France; recognizing our City’s first responders By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - Before writing on city business and what is happening in our city, I felt compelled to write about the tragic loss of innocent lives in France. This cowardly and deliberate act of terrorism has shocked the world. The global war on terrorism has once again awakened the heart and souls of all human beings. This question comes to my mind, Remember 9-11? It seems just like yesterday to those that lost loved ones and to millions of New Yorkers. The war has dragged on for many years and thousands of lives have been lost. As we go about our day to day lives, it is easy to think that it is happening over there, not here. This was once again a wake-up call. It can happen anywhere, anytime. We must now all continue to stand side by side to put an end to these senseless acts. No more indifference and apathy. If you see something, say something. It is time to draw that line in the sand. The plague of terrorism and voices of hatred need to be wiped out by action. The action of unified voices of peace and solidity and yes when needed at times like these, swift acts of unified police and military intervention. The world is a small place. We are blessed to live in a country of freedom and peace. Let us all never forget! Last week, January 5th though the 12th was declared a week to recognize all our first responders throughout the State of Florida. Our own country which is not perfect, has also been going through trying times. While the incidents that took place shed lite on the need

for changes on all levels, we owe thanks to the many men and women that protect and serve our communities. As the old saying goes: "Do not let one bad apple spoil the bunch." As an elected official and the Mayor of Hallandale Beach, I joined with my collogues to recognize all of Hallandale Beach’s finest by delivering two proclamations; one to the Chief of our Fire Department Dan Sullivan and the other to the Chief of our Police Department Dwayne Flournoy. While they received the proclamations we intend to thank and show appreciation for every first responder in our city; multiple ranks of personnel in our Police Department, our Fire Fighters, Emergency Medical Services and our Lifeguards. As the news was airing about police incidents around the country, I received a wonderful note of thanks from one of our residents that was a victim of a home burglar. It is not the only note I have received in my capacity of Mayor thanking our staff. I have received many phone calls, emails and letters commending the fine work our departments do in helping individuals in the most fragile and often desperate situations. As a victim of a home invasion, this letter had a particular impact on me. Over the course of two months four incidents took place in the same area. This typically does happen. We have had cases in all areas of the city. Thief case and then target homes in an area and then move on. In this case, many personal items of jewelry were taken. Our detectives went to work to solve the crimes. The follow-

ing is the letter, which I received permission to share. On December 20th, 2013 our home located at 424 Sunset Drive in Hallandale Beach was burglarized. What was taken was a large amount of jewelry, cash and most importantly, our sense of security in a neighborhood we love. The Hallandale Beach Police Department was immediately contacted and an investigation ensued. From the onset, the Hallandale police handled the burglary in a professional manner and they should be commended. There are a number of individuals who should be recognized not only for their professionalism but for their caring nature as my family was dealing with this traumatic event. First and foremost, I want to thank Chief of Police Dwayne Flournoy. Being the Chief of Police for the City of Hallandale, I recognize and appreciate

how busy his schedule is; however, Chief Flournoy was always only a phone call away and helped in any way he could and for that, we are eternally grateful. I would also like to thank Sergeant Eddy Diaz and Detective Victor Lynch for their hard work over the past year. Their constant efforts pursuing leads and moving the investigation forward, culminated in an arrest currently being prosecuted by the Broward State Attorney's Office and the return of some of my jewelry. I am hopeful and confident that the continued pursuit of this investigation, with the great teamwork of the Hallandale Beach Police Department, will lead to the arrest and prosecution of those individuals that burglarized my home, returning to my family a sense of peace, which is invaluable. This is only one of the many examples of

how dedicated our staff is to public service. I am so happy that items were retrieved and some closure may result and justice served. Most importantly, I am thankful there was no one home during the robbery. Make sure when you see one of the first responders, take a minute to thank them. They leave their families at home and put their lives on the line for us, protecting and serving our community daily. This weekend our community will be celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Saturday, the Community Civic Association will be hosting its Annual Scholarship Dinner at our Community Cultural Center at 4 PM. All proceeds from this event go towards scholarships for Hallandale Beach students. Please come out and support this worthy cause. On Monday, the annual parade will take place. If

It starts at 10 am and makes it way south from BF James Park to Hallandale Beach Boulevard and then onto MLK Blvd. (NW 8th Ave) where it ends at OB Johnson Park. In 2009, he had 15 employees, but because he had to start passing on higher prices to his consumers, layoffs started to take place. It was the reality of paying more for transporting and shipping his products. "It was crazy to think that raising gas prices nearly $2 per gallon could add up to actually having to cut back and lay some very loyal employees off," Boyer explained. "People couldn't grasp why we were having to lay our employees off because of high gas prices." What this country taught many of us is that we are so dependent on cars, trucks, planes and trains to transport our goods and services - as well as ourselves and families. That was a reality we have all had to live with. Trying to find out reasons why, with plenty of oil in reserve, that we had to pay so much, was actually starting something that would take a lot of seat squirming and blatant lies, so many of us got tired of having to hear the double talk from politicians and those who attempted to explain why those $2 per gallon prices were a thing of the past. "As someone who relies so much on my vehicle to do business and transport my family, it got to the point where we simply cut things out to pay for gas," explained Emily Reese of

Aventura, who runs a mail order company from home. "I had to drive to warehouses to pick up product and then would have to pay UPS and other shipping companies extra to compensate for the higher prices being passed on to them." While many just rolled with the punches, Hallandale Beach resident Carlos Moreno couldn't afford to give in and pay $4.50 a gallon. Instead, he was forced to downsize his van to a smaller vehicle, which really made it tough to transport four children to school and other activities. "My business never gave me a raise over the past four years, so I had to take another parttime job, eliminate trips to the movies and other things that we used to take for granted," Moreno explained. "I just was so fed up with paying $100 every time I filled my tank that I had to sell the van and get a compact vehicle." Even those who never worried about what it cost at the pump in the past, began to see what can happen when things were passed on to the consumer. That is what really started to wake many up to how serious things were.

WHAT LIES AHEAD IN 2015 In the coming year, the national average is expected to drop 23 percent to $2.60 per gallon, according to the federal Energy Information Administration. If that projection holds, it would mean an average savings of 77 cents per gallon throughout the year. That's a lot more than pocket change. According to several analysts who study petroleum statistics. Each Ameri-

can driver stands to save about $452 on gasoline in 2015. All told, the lower prices could pump more than $100 billion into the American economy over the course of the year. Why are gas prices likely to keep falling? You can thank a variety of market forces that are working together to push prices lower. American oil producers have been very fortunate lately. Thanks to new drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and the increased use of techniques like hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," on land, this country is swimming in crude. Domestic oil production has increased every year since 2008, which has contributed to a growing world supply. Meanwhile, American refineries are buying fewer barrels of more expensive foreign crudes, which is a huge factor. The increased oil supply in the U.S., combined with weakening expectations for the global economy and world oil consumption, will likely push oil prices lower in 2015. As the cost of oil falls, so will the price of petroleum products like gasoline. AUTO MAKERS ARE JUMPING FOR JOY The downturn in fuel efficiency correlates closely with the jump in public attention to falling gas prices that began to trend this past September. Last year was the first time since late 2009 that the average fuel economy declined between new vehicles bought in August – a popular carshopping month in the U.S. – compared to new vehicles purchased during December’s holiday buying spree.

Aventura Center invites audiences to experience an evening with Art Garfunkel

SPOTLIGHT ON STAGE By Eleanor Hannan Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Grammy Award winner Art Garfunkel, will perform his greatest hits at the Aventura Center on January 27th at 8 p.m. As early as the age of four, Garfield would sing and with a wire recorder, record his voice. Originally part of the team of Simon and Garfunkel, it’s been more than fifty years since “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” and “The Sound of Silence” was recorded in 1960. Their songs were created for the generation of the 1960's and 70's. They continued to combine their talents to please their audiences with catchy folk tunes. It was at the Forest Hills Junior High School that Art caught the attention of classmate Paul Simon, who lived only blocks away from each other in Queens, New York. They began singing in school talent shows and to write their own music and make professional recordings. Their song “Hey Schoolgirl,” was a minor hit that helped the duo secure a recording contract in 1957 with Big Records. It wasn’t long after, they decided to part and attend college. After graduation it wasn’t too long before Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were brought together again

as a new duo. They remained together until 1970. Today their songs are part of an entire generation. The team of Simon and Garfunkel won five Grammy Awards for their songs including “Scarborough Fair,” “America” and “The Graduate.” They parted again in 1970. The Miami International Piano Festival 2014-2015 Season Continues on Jan. 18 at The Aventura Arts and Cultural Center By Howard Rosen and Mark Patrick AVENTURA - The Miami International Piano Festival series Classical Sundays at Five continues with a recital by the British virtuoso Nick Van Bloss on Sunday, January 18 at The Aventura Arts and Cultural Center. This marks his second appearance with The Miami International Piano Festival. His May, 2014 Miami debut at the Colony Theatre was described by the Miami Herald as "scintillating ... memorable" and "a vast musical journey assayed with imagination and depth of feeling." Van Bloss will present a program of Haydn, Beethoven and Schumann. We recently asked the pianist to share his thoughts about performing here: What was your reaction to your South Florida debut last May? I’m so very happy to be returning to perform in South Florida, and for the second time in a year! Giselle Brodsky has created a magnificent platform for pianists to communicate their passion at the highest level. It’s a perfect environment for creativity. Plus, US

audiences are fabulous and, since playing in Miami last year, the generosity and warmth of the people I met has stayed with me and, indeed, moved me.

Why did you select this program? The program I’ll be playing will, I hope, be a delight. Haydn at his most witty, Beethoven full of fire, and finally, bitter-sweet Schumann full of love, hope and passion. It’s my kind of program - one in which I try to paint an image (with music) and present it, at face value, to the audience. What do you hope to achieve in your performances? For me, the most important aspect of any performance is to try and ‘connect’ with the audience. To try to steal people away from themselves and make them enter the world of music, a place where innermost thoughts, longings, and emotions reside in a timeless netherworld. Van Bloss’s performances and CDs have garnered numerous awards and rave reviews from music critics worldwide. Nick van Bloss has performed worldwide

since 2009, including major concerts in the United Kingdom, Japan, Austria, Germany, Sweden, and the United States. As part of his long-term relationship with Nimbus Records ( 3 releases to date), he will release CDs of Beethoven (Diabelli Variations and Sonata Appassionata) and Schumann (Kreisleriana and Etudes Symphoniques) in March 2015 and November 2015. 2015 Hallandale Beach MLK Festival • Alvertis ‘Al’ Bell, music executive, will be the featured speaker on Monday, Jan. 19 at O.B. Johnson Park Alvertis “Al” Bell, music executive, who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will be the featured speaker at the Hallandale Beach and Community Civic Association Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Festival, Monday, Jan. 19. The parade steps off at 9:30 a.m., with the festival beginning at noon. Mr. Bell will speak at 12:30 p.m. at O.B. Johnson Park, 900 NW 8th Avenue. Mr. Bell, who was an owner of Stax Records and former president of Motown records, marched with Dr. King in the early Civil Rights marches of the 1960s. Mr. Bell and Stax Records gained notoriety launching the careers of numerous recording artists, including Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Booker T & the MG’s and Isaac Hayes. He built Stax Records into one of the largest Black-owned companies of the 1960s. After selling off the assets of Stax Records

Mr. Bell, who was an owner of Stax Records and former president of Motown records, marched with Dr. King in the early Civil Rights marches of the 1960s. after bankruptcy in the 1970s, Mr. Bell rebounded as president of Motown before striking out on his own again founding Alvert Music and Bellmark Records, which produced chart toppers such as “Whoomp! (There It Is),” by Tag Team, and “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World,” by Prince. The address will be part of the City and Community Civic Association annual observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The day begins with the annual parade stepping off in the 900 block of NW 2nd Avenue, proceeding south to West Hallandale Beach Boulevard, then west to NW 8th Avenue (Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard), then north to O.B.

Johnson Park. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel will be the Grand Marshal. A reviewing stand will be at Foster Road and NW 8th Avenue. The annual Dr. King Festival runs from noon to 5 p.m. at O.B. Johnson Park. The Festival will include live performances by Kevin Cameron, Kelsey Nykole (from VH1’s Couples Therapy), gospel recording artists the Abraham Brothers, and Two-4, Mix Master Lee, Zipporiah, TP9, Terrance Rolle and The Motowners. The performances will be hosted by Dawnmonique Johnson and William Alexander. Red Eye Entertainment, Inc. is producing the musical talent.

Annual MLK Parade starts at 9:30 a.m. Monday The annual City of Hallandale Beach and Community Civic Association Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. parade is scheduled to step off at 9:30 a.m. Monday along NW 2nd Avenue. The parade will run continue south on NW 2nd Avenue to westbound Hallandale Beach Boulevard, to NW 8th Avenue (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue), turn north and proceed to O.B. Johnson Park for a day long activities. Westbound Hallandale Beach Boulevard will be closed from Dixie Highway to NW 8th Avenue on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. to accommodate the parade. Eastbound Hallandale Beach Boulevard will remain open. However, there will be no left (northbound) turns allowed from eastbound Hallandale Beach Boulevard from NW 8th Avenue to NE 1st Avenue during the closure. Westbound traffic should use Pembroke Road. Word-ofmouth seemed to have ignited an overwhelming popular response, resulting in Capisce Ristorante proving to be the best hidden secret in South Broward. “Every single item on our menu , including our sauces and pastas, is made from scratch in true traditional Italian distinction,” says Raul Deulofeu, manager of Capisce, “This is the philosophy of our owners , Carolina and Antonio Di Campo, whose heritage is grounded in family-owned trattorias in their native Venezuela.” “My boyhood was full of memories working in my father’s kitchens, developing a passion for cooking and enjoying the pleasures experienced by patrons who extolled papa’s delicacies,” says Tony Di Campo, “especially since he had been a young immigrant from Italy who built a business solely on his talent.” Carolina remembers her grandmother’s cucina at home where she and her mom helped prepare traditional dishes from the old country, “adding those special ingredients of love and pride,” she said with a smile. Antonio went on to become an engineer

and Carolina an economist, but following in family tradition, together they opened two popular restaurants of their own in Caracas named Casa Tua. When they arrived in South Florida, they dreamed of opening a ristorante with that same traditional Italian cuisine. At Capisce, they planned and supervised every step of the operation from décor, equipment, specialty purveyors, china and glassware. Then with Chef Rogelio Ruiz, formerly head chef at Acquo 124 in Hallandale, La Vita Bella in Sunny Isles and several New York hotels, developed an Italian food aficionado’s menu with a fine selection of domestic and international wines to pair, as well as a regular menu of familiar favorites. “We are continuously in search of, and are receptive to, adding traditional Italian dishes served mainly in Italy for Italians,” says Tony Di Campo. “We have antiquated cook books with 4 to 5,000 recipes that go back to the Renaiissanc.” “With all of our dishes, we are purists,” Carolina adds. “Our sauces begin with fresh tomatoes and our dressings are made with pure extra virgin and lemon. Nothing at Capisce is canned or frozen.” “For example,” adds Deulofeu, “our slow roasted Osso Bucco is the best, and our price is moderate accounting for the preparation and ingredients that it requires from our chef. “

The house recommends that you begin with Antipasto Italiano to share and a fabulous appetizer, or just a small meal, of Polenta, Mussels Marinara, spicy Calamari Alla Arrabbiata, Clams Oreganata or Marinara, Carpaccio de Manzo or Salmone, Rapini e Salsiccie (broccoli rabb and Italian sausage) or homemade meatballs. Specialties of the house include Country Chicken Style for Two for only $31.95 and Zuppa di Pesce for Two at $30.95. Other signature dishes include fish and shellfish delicacies that can be prepared either Francese or Oreganata, Baccala a la Livornese, Salmone a la Genovese, and Gamberi (shrimp)Fra Diavolo or Scampi, all as per your choice. Regular dinner entrees include Vitello (Veal Scallopini), Melanzane a la Parmigiana (Eggplant), a choice of five chicken dishes, Black Angus New York steak and Black Angus Skirt steak. However, for those Italian aficianados and purists, Capisce also adds traditional specialty Italian dishes of baby octopus, rabbit , slowly sautéed lamb

shank, even lamb head. Fresh Mediterranean fish like Branzino and Orata is brought in daily, which Chef Rogelio prepares per customers’ choice and palate. Handmade pastas include Buccatini Alla Amatriciana (prepared with pancetta onions and fresh plum tomatoes), Lasagna Al Forno (homemade lasagna with traditional Bolognese sauce), Spaghetti Alla Carbonara (pancetta onions, eggs, Pecorina and a touch of cream), Linguini with White Clam Sauce (using N.Y top neck clams, garlic, olive oil and touch of white wine), Fettuccini Alfredo (an original recipe with a combination of Grana Padano, Parmesan cheese and heavy cream, Pappardelle Alla Bolognese (a rich ragu made with sirloin, veal and plum tomatoes), Gnocchi Al Gusto (with your choice of pesto, pomodoro or other delectable sauces).
