When it comes to branding, Hallandale Beach looks to keep up with the times by making changes
‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’
HALLANDALE BEACH - Recently the city commission moved forward on our branding initiative. The last time the city embraced branding and marketing was under the leadership of RJ Intindola. The city worked with Ambit Marketing out of Fort Lauderdale. At that time coastal cities were adding beach to their name to help make it clear to future residents and business owners that we were located on the coast. It was also intended to attract investors to our community. We changed the logo through an art competition in partnership with the Art Institute in 2001. The current city logo was a result of those efforts. The commission approved the logo from a group of designs. The commission at that time did not change the motto, “City of Choice”. After the changes we gradually added the logo letterhead, business cards, buildings and entrance features. That was a little over ten years ago. In 2011 the City embarked on the next set of goals established in our Transportation Master Plan goal to install “way finding” signs throughout our community. These signs would direct residents and visi-
Mayor Joy Cooper tors to key locations and businesses within our city and act as a demarcation for various neighborhoods and facilities. The signs will help direct traffic and help remove some traffic from our main corridors by offering alternative and more direct access. Before purchasing signs, City Manager Antonio requested that we consider rebranding the city to reflect our changing economy and demographics. The city hired Motiv8 Marketing firm out of Hollywood to do the work and create a new brand. The process took over 6 months. The firm started with one on one interviews with each commissioner. After these interviews they interviewed Staff. The research did not stop there. They spent time at various venues

The commission had the two finals to choose from; a multi colored H with Beach spelled out along the horizontal line in the H and a colorful round graphic with Hallandale Beach written out in a free hand script. The H made the cut, but the Commission agreed to change the font type of beach in the H.
throughout the city interviewing random individuals and asking them questions on their views of the city. They also set up focus groups to collaborate in a group setting to see where the same themes and perceptions emerged. The marketing team then evaluated the results from all sources to create six different logos. The logos were then narrowed down. This process took many weeks. The Staff and Commission individually weighed in on which logos were their favorites. Once this phase was completed Motiv8 went back to the focus group to fine tune two of the logos and ideas for a new motto. The City Commission had chance to make a final selection at the last commission meeting in December. Choosing a logo is not easy. Not every person will like the same thing.

One was “Florida’s Best Bet” the focus group wanted to base the marketing not on just gaming, but wanted a broader appeal to reflect diversity and energy. The motto was
agreed to be “ProgressInnovation-Opportunity”. . The other tag lines can be utilized depending on the media market. The final H has not been released yet. The next steps will be the roll out. Staff will internally begin utilizing the logo and when we need to purchase items where logos are used. When capital projects are implemented including; way finding, entrance signs, vehicles and other community facilities the new logo will be utilized. The City will also begin to implement in our technology applications. starting after the CRA meeting which will begin at 6 PM. The Commission will be conducting a scheduling meeting at 5:30 PM. If you call in the morning, you can usually get an appointment the same day, and if you just want to drop by while you are in the area, Ellen will do her best to get you right in. "What we are doing here," Bob said, "is offering the best hearing care anywhere, so you won't wait long to see me and you will be treated professionally and courteously." The hearing evaluation takes 15 to 20 minutes and there is no charge. "The first thing I do is to check the ears with our advanced equipment." A video-otoscope is used, a non-invasive device that transmits images of the ear canal and eardrum onto a monitor's high definition plasma screen. "I look in there and make sure there is not a lot of wax in the ear. Wax can cause a mild hearing loss, and sometimes removing the wax eliminates the problem! If there is no excessive wax, we go to the test room and I do an audiometric evaluation to see if there are some sounds the patient cannot hear well." The natural aging process and noise can cause a hearing loss, natural aging being the most common reason for hearing problems. Stereos, I-pods, boom boxes, traffic, and a noisy work environment all contribute to the cause. "It's the prolonged exposure to noise that does it," he said. BENITEZ WAS STARKEY LAB'S FITTING SPECIALIST Before coming to the Aventura HEAR Center, Bob was, for 13 years, with Starkey Laboratories, the premier manufacturer of hearing technology in the United States. He is a Harvard graduate, a licensed Hearing Aid Specialist in the State of Florida, and nationally Board Certified in Hearing Instrument Sciences. At Starkey, he was a fitting specialist. "I was the one to whom people like myself (a hearing professional) would send their patients when they couldn't figure out a way to make those patients happy with their hearing instruments." This experience made Bob an expert with hearing aid fittings. “The new digital instruments are complex and require expertise if they are to be properly tuned for a patient’s individual needs,” Bob said.

That is why it’s important to get your hearing checked. Once you know you have a problem, you can take steps to deal with it. Just as your primary care physician does not routinely check your eyesight, she or he will not be checking your hearing. In both cases physicians normally assume you are seeing a specialist for care in these areas. The sad part is that while most seniors take good care of their eyes, very few actually have yearly hearing tests. There is no reason for it! You do not need a referral to have a hearing evaluation— just call the Aventura HEAR Center and ask for an appointment!” Improved hearing leads to an improved quality of life. Many people who have a hearing loss become more and more isolated because they cannot enjoy conversations in social situations, but hearing help is now available that really works. THE NEWEST TECHNOLOGY Hearing aids have become very sophisticated and there are many, many choices. How is a patient to decide which hearing aid to wear? “It starts with a hearing professional you can trust,” Benitez said. “It is a good thing to do research and find
out what you can about hearing loss and how hearing aids can help, but when it comes to choosing a hearing aid, you need to follow the advice of a professional.” Many patients think because their friend or a family member did well with a particular hearing aid that they will also do well. “That’s not always the case. Certain types of hearing instruments are designed for particular configurations of hearing loss, and your friend or relative may have a high frequency loss and do well with those aids, but you have a low frequency loss and the aid is completely inadequate for you. As a hearing professional, I am responsible for evaluating your loss and recommending the appropriate hearing aid for your loss, lifestyle, and budget.” “Lifestyle is important,” he adds, “because a person who is not active or who has a very limited social life due to health issues simply does not need some of the advanced features available on the more sophisticated instruments.” Some hearing aids offer features designed specifically for very active social lives, and that is not what everyone needs. On the other hand, most patients would benefit from a hearing aid that does not whistle all the time, or an aid that makes noisy rooms more comfortable, or one that allows for telephone use without having to push a button. Benitez said, “many of the old problems that people had with hearing aids which prevented them from wearing them have been overcome by advances in technology, so even if you have tried hearing aids in the past and did not liked them, there are good reasons to take a second listen.”
And what about all those different hearing aid companies, which one makes the best hearing aids? “They all do,” Benitez adds with a chuckle, “it’s not the company, it’s the professional fitting you that is crucial.” There are several big hearing aid companies worldwide, and they all make very good products, they are all priced very competitively, and the Aventura HEAR Center has relationships with all of them. “It used to be one company was better at one type of aid and another at a different type. With the advent of digital aids, that has all changed. My experience working for the manufacturer gives me a certain edge—I have a level of training and programming expertise not available to most dispensers and that’s an important aspect of what I offer my patients. HOLLYWOOD - On Friday, Jan. 11 from 7 to 10 p.m., the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood will host a ′70s and ′80s Glam Rock dance party with legendary DJ Yard to coincide with the exhibitions Elisabeth Condon: The Seven Seas, Millree Hughes and Peter Boyd McLean: Lummox, Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares: Love on an Escalator, and Rosemarie Chiarlone and Susan Weiner: Obstruction. Admission is free for Center members and $10 for non-members. These exhibitions are on display through Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at the Center, located at 1650 Harrison St. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, 12 to 4 p.m. In her painting and drawing exhibition, Elisabeth Condon introduces the 1980s Los Angeles nightclub scene as a metaphor for personal and social transformation. The Tampa and Brooklyn-based artist approaches this landscape as a repository for individual and shared memories, associations, and cultural experiences. In their exhibition Lummox, Millree Hughes presents a selection of drawings, and Peter Boyd McLean will show a related film. The drawings are of the Lummoxes glam-rockloving hooligans that came on holiday to the little resort village of Towyn, North Wales, where Hughes grew up. The characters in the drawings are permanently fixed in their lost heyday, the 1970s, peering at the present through a haze of smoke. Hughes began these drawings in 2004, while living in New York. As the Lummoxes cavorted on the page, he imagined them forming an eponymous band. In Love on an Escalator, artists Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares kiss in public. In the video work, one sees the audience encounter the artists; they comment, laugh, look, don’t look, look away uncomfortably, and look again. In this on-going project, the simple repeated gesture of the kiss tests the rules of social conduct. Why do kids stare? Adult women sneer? Men high five? And in some situations, no one looks at all. The artists stand, staking their place in the world, ignoring judgment, and declaring love. In a society flooded with sexuality and sexual imagery, why does an innocent kiss cause such confusion? Why is this act challenging? This intimacy is too intimate live. Visual artist Rosemarie Chiarlone and poet Susan Weiner’s collaboration, Obstruction, investigates women’s struggle for authenticity through a variety of formats. The imagery is subtle, and the text is aggressive in places and restrained in others. The contrast emphasizes solitary moments, confines of time and space, and ambivalence. The work references the “glass ceiling” imposed by societal constraints, which influence female relational identity. For those of you know me, fully understand that NOBODY wants this community to work more than I do. My entire life has been wrapped around this city, so if I hurt feelings, trying to make sure that the entire city is included, so be it. I have much bigger concerns in my life than worry about who I have offended. Especially when that person(s) has so little invested here. Last year, some businesses attempted to bring food trucks to the parking lot of a West Hallandale Beach shopping mall – with the idea of exposing the other businesses. It turned out to be something that many had hoped it would grow from. That never happened. The organizers of the event were told that permitting would only be issued twice a year by the city. What? That was one of the weakest attempts at being lazy I had ever heard. How can any community tell the merchants that do business and drive potential traffic into their city, that they cannot host promotional events on their property. No city I have ever heard would ever do that. It makes no sense at all. Not in this economy. Not when businesses are closing at a record pace. I want to get back to what has made Commissioner Julian special in all of this. Here is someone who has lived
in this community longer than any of the combined commission. He fully comprehends what the meaning of every corner of the city means. He is always willing to stand up to make sure that everyone is counted, and that to all of us, is what the true meaning of representing your city is. Dealing with so many cities throughout this region, I am often pointing out how festivals and other crowd-attracting events are the backbone of these communities. Many of these cities embrace their local businesses, hosting property-boosting things to stay above water – financially. They would never put a limit on what they can host in the name of keeping their businesses going. The South Florida Sun Times has gone as far as offering free publicity and free coverage – with photos that appear on the internet, Facebook and in the publication every Thursday – to those who run events. That is what we do. We
have promoted all the communities since the day we opened!
POTENTIAL EVENTS I have probably gone over this many times, but every weekend, there should be something going on. Hallandale Beach has to be known on the same level as other surrounding communities who offer art shows, antique car shows, taste of the city (highlighting great restaurants), music, flea markets and just about anything else to get people on to the properties all over the city.
If the City of Hallandale Beach has a minimum of permitted events, they should change that immediately. If not, and residents have to wait 10 minutes in line for a burrito once a month in the parking lot of city hall, the economic decline will continue and our local businesses will continue to fade away, and that would be a shame! Holocaust Documentation & Education Center, Inc. looking for Holocaust era artifacts
At first glance it’s just an old photograph. A little girl holds her father’s hand as they walk through the park. But take another look, and it is so much more. Rita Hofrichter and her father had a special relationship. “He was a wonderful father; we enjoyed each other’s company. He took me with him everywhere,” Rita says of her father, “I was a tomboy and he wanted me to be a proper lady.” The photo captures a moment in the special bond between a father and daughter, and a moment in history before their lives would be forever changed. Rita was born in Lodz, Poland. After the Nazi occupation of Poland, she and her family were forced to move to the Warsaw ghetto. During the Warsaw ghetto uprising, she and her father escaped to the Aryan side. Rita was placed in a convent and her father joined a fighting partisan unit, where he was killed in action. “He helped a lot of people to escape from the ghetto.” This photograph is just one of thousands that are part of the Holocaust Documentation & Education Center’s (HDEC) collection and will be featured in the South Florida Holocaust Museum, which is currently in the planning

Rita, who donated this precious photograph along with others and some important documents, explained why it was important to her to donate them to the museum, “I want to preserve the memory of my family and the Holocaust and I felt that by donating them, they could do more to teach the lessons of the Holocaust than inside an
album in my home.” She recognizes that it can be hard to part with such cherished items, but Rita does not regret her choice, “I felt it was much more important that the story is told and documented, because there are many Holocaust deniers and denial and antisemitism are on the rise.” With plans to move to Dania Beach, the HDEC is ramping up its efforts to collect memorabilia even more. “It is
a critical time both for the museum and in the lives of many Survivors,” explains HDEC President Rositta Kenigsberg, “We want people to know, particularly Survivors, that their precious items, alongside their testimonies, will tell their story for generations to come and their message of Never Again will be remembered. The HDEC urges Survivors, Liberators, and Rescuers to donate their items, whether in the form of photographs, documents, clothing, or other items, so that they will stay right here in South Florida and be a part of our Holocaust Museum. They will be used to educate future generations about the historical events of the Holocaust, as well as the universal lessons of prejudice, hated, and intolerance.” Today, the HDEC’s extensive memorabilia collection includes: photographs, letters, postcards, work permits, falsified documents, religious objects, Nazi guns, Nazi regalia & flags, and a large map collection, as well as a rescued Torah from Czechoslovakia, camp
uniforms, a U.S. Liberator’s uniform, and a recently restored rail car. Negotiations to acquire a U.S. Sherman tank are in the works as well. If you or someone you

The public forum is a new addition to the ongoing medical symposium hosted by the Wien Center that is now entering its eleventh year – the Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) Syposium -, which welcomes neurological medical experts from around the world to gather and share new information about advances in research related to the clinical diagnosis and progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The public education forum will be held on Sunday, January 20th, from 2:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. at the Miami Beach Resort and Spa located at 4833 Collins Avenue. Attendance is free. Is snoring more than just a sleep problem?
(NewsUSA) - Do you have a partner that constantly complains about your snoring? Do you wake up feeling fatigued even though you slept all night long? If so, you may have more than a noise complaint on your hands. Snoring is no laughing matter. In fact, 50 to 60 percent of people who snore have a condition called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which can be life-threatening if left untreated. This was the case for Geoff Malecha, a retired computer professional. For most of his adult life, Geoff maintained a strict workout regimen and was quite healthy. A few years ago, his wife, Cassie, began to notice something alarming in Geoff's sleeping patterns. He would frequently snore and even stop breathing during sleep. As the situation progressed, Geoff would often choke in his sleep and awaken in a panic, gasping for breath. According to the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA), one of the main signs of OSA may be a complaint by your bed partner that you snore loudly or that you stop breathing repeatedly while you're asleep. "That choking and gasping really got my attention," Geoff said. "It finally got me to finally see a physician about what was happening." Then, the answer was delivered. While reviewing the results of his sleep study, Geoff was told that he stopped breathing a total of 125 times per hour. Obstructive sleep apnea doesn't just
leave you tired from a non-restful night of sleep. When you stop breathing, your heart beats faster, raising your blood pressure and increasing your chances of heart attack and stroke. Insufficient sleep can affect your job performance and ability to perform basic functions, like driving a car. "My doctor recommended I begin continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment," Geoff recalled. An elegant, high-end fashion show and dinner will open the annual Community Civic Association and City of Hallandale Beach Dr. Martin Luther Jr., weekend, 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Cultural Community Center, 410 S.E. 3rd Street. The weekend culminates Monday, Jan. 21, with the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Parade and Festival, beginning at 10 a.m. Models will walk the runway in the latest creations of three South Florida fashion designers at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Scholarship Gala on Saturday. The scholarship dinner raised funds for Hallandale Beach youth to attend college. Tickets for the gala are $40 and can be obtained by contacting Delvis Rogers, 954-549-7214. Past scholarship winners have earned degrees in education, business and in other areas of study. Several scholarship winners are teaching in the area. The Gala will begin with a reception at 4 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. followed by the fashion show. The centerpiece of the weekend is the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Parade and Festival. The parade will begin at B.F. James Park, head south on N.W. 2nd Avenue, to Hallandale Beach Boulevard, then west to N.W. 8th Avenue, then north to O.B. Johnson Park. The parade steps off at 10 a.m. Parade participants will begin lining up at 9 a.m. All roads along the parade route will be closed to all traffic on Monday morning from 10 a.m. until noon. Westbound Hallandale Beach Boulevard will be closed to all traffic between Dixie Highway and N.W. 8th Avenue from 10 a.m. to noon. Traffic will be directed around the parade route. More than 10 bands and entertainers will begin performing at O.B. Johnson Park at noon. Among those scheduled to perform are National recording artist Cherrelle, Shonie, Zipporiah, Brandi of the R&B group Blaque, and C-Bone. Also, recording artists Que, TP9, Jada Blaza, Elhae, 2cute Ohginelle, Tjuan Karena Clarke and several local artists are planning performances during the five-hour MLK Festival. Entrance to the festival is free, but there is a cost for the carnival-style rides and food.
FLOOD MITIGATION AND N.E. DRAINAGE
An updated five-year Hallandale Beach Flood Plain Management Plan and plans for the new Northeast Quadrant drainage improvement plan will be unveiled at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Cultural Community Center, 410 S.E. 3rd Street. Residents throughout the City are encouraged to attend. The new flood plain management plan updates the 2007 plan approved by the City Commission. The plan encourages the City to continue finding ways to use open space for drainage and encourage developers to develop property responsibly, using more space for water percolation. One way the City is addressing the flood problem is through the Northeast Quadrant stormwater improvement project. The project, which will begin this spring, includes the placement of larger capacity drainage pipes and diverting stormwater into deep wells. At present, stormwater flows into the Intracoastal Waterway.
Miami-Dade County. The connection with Miami-Dade County was abandoned after the four-lane road was constructed. The four lanes provided more capacity than was needed. N.E. 8th Avenue and N.E. 10th Avenue were two-lane, oneway streets between East Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Atlantic Shores Boulevard. N.E. 8th Avenue is a southbound roadway; N.E. 10th Avenue was one-way northbound. “All cities are looking at ways to add bi-
cycle paths,” Mr. Labinsky said. The City initiated a sixmonth test period for Layne Boulevard. The City engineering division plans to hold a community meeting this spring gage the success of the test period. If the residents approve of the project, additional steps will be taken to make the lanes permanent. The goal in all the conversions is to make the areas more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly. Also, it encourages residents to exercise more, walking or riding.
The restriping has a residual effect of slowing traffic because there is only one lane in each direction. To slow traffic in other areas, engineers and residents have discussed adding traffic calming devices, speed bumps, in the Southeast Quadrant. Plans are being completed for traffic calming between on S.E. 2nd Street and East Hallandale Beach Boulevard on S.E. 3rd Avenue and S.E. 4th Avenue.
Food Truck Friday was a huge success
First Fridays on Federal was a huge success at Hallandale Beach City Hall on Friday, Jan. 4. A program of the Hallandale Beach Parks and Recreation Department in cooperation with BurgerBeast Sef Gonzalez, First Fridays on Federal will bring together up to 20 gourmet food trucks from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the first Friday of each month. If you missed the first one, the next is planned for Friday, Feb. 1, at City Hall, 400 S. Federal Highway. Spicing up Cold-Weather Desserts With Spirits
(NewsUSA) - Talk about a dessert that hits the spot -- especially as the weather turns chillier. You've heard of "pairing," right? Well, in shaking up the concept's traditional definition -- matching wines to dishes they most complement -- innovative chefs are now using spirits like cognac to create even more tempting culinary experiences. Cognac's spicy and aromatic characteristics have always made for perfect drinking this time of year. But when Camus VS Elegance cognac (www.camus.fr) specifically is used as one of two "surprise ingredients" in this recipe for Coconut Snowballs, well, now you've got something really special. "Camus pairs well with the creaminess of the coconut and actually enhances its flavor and the overall fruitiness of the dessert," Joshua Gripper, the executive pastry chef at the trendy W Hotel and Resort in Miami Beach, Florida, says of his creation, which he likes to serve after duck. "It gives a nice flow to the senses, and can also be enjoyed while sipping a Camus VS cognac on the rocks." Oh, the other surprise ingredient? Ladyfingers, which -- covered over as they are by the coconut -- add their own "hidden dimension, flavor and texture." COCONUT SNOWBALL 1 hour prep and overnight freeze • Servings: Makes 1 snowball CUSTARD INGREDIENTS: 1 1/4 cups coconut milk • 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar • 2 egg yolks Combine all the ingredients in a small pot, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Cook on medium-low heat while stirring constantly until the custard thickens slightly. Strain the custard and allow it to cool at room temperature. While the custard is cooling, start making the mousse. MOUSSE INGREDIENTS: 2 cups heavy cream (whipped) • 14 ounces white chocolate • 1 ounce Camus cognac • 2 gelatin sheets Whip the heavy cream with a whisk until it forms medium-stiff peaks. Melt the white chocolate over a double boiler. Soak the gelatin sheets in ice water until it's softened (5 minutes), and strain the gelatin to remove any excess liquid. Add the gelatin to the Camus cognac and melt them together (30 seconds at a time). Add the cognac to the custard, stir in the white chocolate, and mix until completely smooth. Fold in the heavy cream. Place the mousse in an airtight container and refrigerate overnight. ASSEMBLY: 4 ounces pineapple juice • 1 ounce Camus cognac • 3 ladyfinger cookies • 1/2 cup shredded coconut • 1/4 cup diced pineapple (garnish) • 2 leaves fresh cilantro (garnish) • 1/4 cup coconut milk (garnish) • 1 tablespoon olive oil (garnish)
Combine 4 ounces of pineapple juice with 1 ounce of Camus cognac. Cut 3 ladyfingers in half and dip quickly in the pineapple juice. Using a 4-ounce scoop, position the mousse onto a sheet of parchment paper. Place the ladyfingers in the middle of the mousse. Place the mousse in the freezer for 30 minutes (or until firm). When the mousse is firm but pliable, roll it into a ball, and coat it in shredded coconut. Place the snowball in the refrigerator and start the final plating -positioning the snowball in the middle of an attractive plate or bowl, garnishing the dish with diced pineapple, cilantro leaves, coconut milk and a little olive oil.
