THE

DECEMBER 14 & 15, 2019 RIVERCENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Joy

Welcome to the 2019 performance of The Nutcracker! As president, I am honored to serve on the Board of Directors of The Columbus Ballet, an organization that has been promoting art, education, and culture in our community for over two decades. At our September parent and cast meeting, I shared this story from a recent conference in Atlanta. During that event, I was speaking with a colleague about our respective activities outside of work. I mentioned that I was the newly elected president of The Columbus Ballet’s Board of Directors. His expression immediately lit up as he conveyed to me that he used to play in the symphony for the Atlanta Ballet. He described how ballet was the most beautiful of the dance art forms, and how much “joy” he experienced attending ballet performances. I wanted “joy” to be our theme as we started rehearsals for this year’s performance. Whether it is part of your annual Columbus holiday tradition, or it is your first time experiencing the magic of The Nutcracker, my hope is that this performance brings you great joy - joy as you watch the talented dancers of the Columbus State University Youth Dance Conservatory and our community; joy as you take in the music of Tchaikovsky, as performed by our live orchestra under the direction of Maestro Paul Hostetter; and joy as you listen to the live vocals as performed by the Voices of the Valley Children’s Chorus. As we celebrate the 25th year of The Columbus Ballet, and on behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to recognize the vision of Maria Hirsch and Beth Griffin for starting the company in 1994. To the many who make this year’s performance possible: from our performers; to our Guest Artistic Director, Mr. Paulo Manso de Sousa; to our Ballet Mistress, Ms. Kylie Casino; to our Wardrobe Mistress, Ms. Britt Ellmer; to our many parent volunteers; and to my fellow board members who dedicate many hours – thank you! I would also like to thank the greater Columbus community for their support over the years, from our patrons, to the many local businesses, sponsors, and foundations that support The Columbus Ballet. The Columbus Ballet continues to cherish its partnership with the Columbus State University Youth Dance Conservatory. If this year’s performance inspires you and brings joy, consider signing up your children for Conservatory classes starting in January. In addition, please consider donating to The Columbus Ballet at our website, thecolumbusballet.net. I wish you great joy this holiday season! A GUIDE TO WATCHING BALLET FOR

OurYoung Friends

Welcome to The Columbus Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker! We hope you have fun at today’s performance and that you will come back to see us many times in the future. There are a few things to know that will help you get the most out of your experience.

Once the music starts it is important to be quiet. The music is a big part of the performance, and we want you and the rest of the audience to be able to enjoy it.

Do not eat while you’re in your seat – if you get hungry, wait until the intermission or after the performance to get a snack.

Maybe you know the music already and can’t wait for your favorite part.

Pick out your favorite costumes or decide which scene you like the most.

Don’t distract others from what’s happening on stage, we all want to enjoy the show.

Do your best to sit still and not disturb those around you.

There are a lot of things to notice while you’re watching a ballet.

Of course you can always just sit back and enjoy the wonderful dancing!

Even after you get home, there are ways to continue to enjoy the ballet.

We want you to have a great time at the ballet and we hope to see you again soon!

During the intermission, you can ask questions about the ballet, and you can talk with your parents or friends about what you liked best.

If you listen carefully, you can pick out different instruments in the orchestra or you can watch to see how the dancers respond when the music gets faster or slower.

Draw pictures of the dancers, or make up your own costumes.

Listen to the music to help you remember what you saw, or maybe you will want to learn ballet!

Thank you for coming!

The S tory ACT 1 The story involves a young girl named Clara and her magical uncle Dr. Drosselmeyer. At a family Christmas party, Dr. Drosselmeyer captivates the guests with magic and party tricks. Later, he presents Clara with the gift of a beautiful Nutcracker. Clara is delighted with her gift! That night after the party has ended, she sneaks back downstairs to be with her Nutcracker doll. The clock strikes twelve as Clara’s dreams begin to come alive! Her uncle Dr. Drosselmeyer appears and the Christmas tree magically begins to grow. Suddenly, Clara is frightened by a group of mice who appear out of nowhere. As if by magic, the Nutcracker doll defends her by summoning the rest of the toy soldiers and leading them into battle against the Rat King. Victorious, the Nutcracker is transformed into a dashing prince who leads Clara through the Kingdom of Snow and into the Land of Sweets.

ACT 2 Arriving at the Land of Sweets, Clara and the Prince are met by an array of characters. The pair recount their tale of bravery and victory over the mice and their king. The Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier then appear and order a dance celebration to honor their achievements. Beginning with Spanish chocolate, the festival continues with Arabian coffee, Chinese tea, French Mirlitons, Russian Peppermint, Mother Ginger and her Polichinelles, Waltz of the Flowers, and finally the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. After bidding her farewell, Clara awakes with her Nutcracker doll, wondering if it all was truly a dream.

All of us here at the Wade Companies want to thank you for a great year We hope you have a wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year!
