Mt. Beerwah, Glass House Mountains National Park

beerwah

Beerwah village is one of the larger towns dotted throughout the Glass House Mountains area, and offers a down-to-earth atmosphere with all the facilities you might need for a comfortable stay on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Beerwah has two major attractions that have really put it on the map for international visitors: one is Mount Beerwah, the largest of the Glass House Mountains, and the other is Australia Zoo, made famous by the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin.

Spectacular Mount Beerwah presides over the town like an ever-watchful mother.

If you’re an experienced climber you will enjoy the challenge of her steep ascent and the reward of panoramic views across the Sunshine Coast from her summit.

Booloumba Creek, Conondale National Park

CONOND a L e

The Maleny-Kenilworth Road is a popular scenic drive and Conondale is the half way point. There are a number of places to stop and check out this beautiful part of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, the Mary Valley and the Mary River.

The mountain range you can see is the Conondale Range and the national park is called Conondale National Park which is listed as ‘an unspoilt and undeveloped park of harsh beauty’ and is home to many rare and threatened animals, including the Mary River Turtle. The Aboriginal name Hinka Booma is all but a memory with the town renamed ‘Kenilworth’.

The major industry in the town has remained cattle farming, although it does boast the popular Kenilworth Cheese Factory.

e UDLO

The Eudlo area makes a lovely drive through the country side, situated in the valley below the Blackall Range, on the coastal side.

It can be reached via the ‘Hunchy’ or Razorback road from Montville, or from the Bruce Highway via Kiel Mountain. A stones throw from the Big Pineapple, and Nambour, it is a luscious green hilly area, and a gateway to the coast. A great area to sit in a café with a good book as you watch the world go by.

FL a XTON

Flaxton is a tiny village where you will find lovely arts and crafts and excellent Devonshire teas and lunches.

Surrounding the many avocado orchards is a town of restaurants, guesthouses, art and craft galleries and private dwellings. It is an ideal place to picnic and enjoy life. Flaxton is sometimes considered the prettiest of the Blackall Range settlements. It offers a wide variety of beautiful mountain accommodation.

Mt. Ngungun, Glass House Mountains National Park

GL a SS h OUS e m OUNT ai NS

The township of Glass House Mountains, sits amidst the majestic popular tourist destination, the Glass House Mountains, located in the traditional lands of the Aboriginal Gubbi Gubbi people. Named by explorer Captain Cook in 1770, on his epic voyage north on his ship The Endeavour, the Glass House Mountains are said to have reminded him of glass furnace houses back home in Yorkshire. The Glass House Mountains consist of eleven mountains known in Aboriginal language as ‘daki comon’ meaning ‘stone standing up’.

Glass House Mountains – “Come for a Day – Come for a Stay”

The Celebrate Glasshouse Country group continue to show initiative and a genuine desire to make our region a real marketable identity, attractive for others to visit and a better place for all of us all to live in. There is so much to do in the ‘Glasshouse Country’ that we are encouraging visitors to plan to stay and have a really good look around.

t

he geology of the g lass h

ouse Mountains

The question is often put, “are the Glass House Mountains the remnants of old volcanoes?” the short answer is NO, as they are Magma Intrusions that were formed and matured underground some 25 million years ago – Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia.

Ke N i L w O r T h

Kenilworth is the next town along the Maleny-Kenilworth Road about 20 minutes drive from Conondale, and about 50 km from the coast.

The Aboriginal name Hinka Booma is all but a memory with the town renamed ‘Kenilworth’ after the title of a book that was being read at the time by the wife of the first cattle farmer in the area, Richard Smith.

The major industry in the town has remained cattle farming, although it does boast the popular Kenilworth Cheese Factory.

L a NDS b O r OUG h

Landsborough is a small town located north of the Glasshouse Mountains and 5 minutes from the Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo. You will find quaint shops and a museum housing the social and cultural history of the area.

There’s a local pub which is a bit of a tourist attraction.

ma L e NY

This unique rural community is perched high above the Sunshine Coast with amazing views to the Glasshouse Mountains in south-east Queensland.

Locals say the rolling green hills, deep pockets of rain forest and spectacular views in all directions cast a spell over Maleny. But that’s only part of the story. Come unravel the mystery for yourself.

ma PL e TON

The area is renowned for its forests, walks and views. The Mapleton Falls have a sheer drop of 120m, and the viewing platform opens up a magnificent vista of the Mary Valley.

Mapleton Falls National park is home to rare native flora and fauna with walks through breathtaking eucalypt forest and rainforest.

The Waterwheel, Moontville

mONTV i LL e

Montville has a true village charm. You will find a pleasant blend of Tudor, Irish and English cottages of log or stone, Swiss and Bavarian chalets, an old mill water-wheel, colonial and old Queenslanders and of course, one of the most spectacular and panoramic views over a coastal plain you could find in Australia.

Ewen Maddock Dam, Mooloolah Valley
Fenella Arrindell Photography

m OOLOOL ah

a LL e Y

The Mooloolah Valley area makes for a lovely drive through the country side, situated in the valley below the Blackall Range, on the coastal side.

Mooloolah is referred to as Mooloolah Valley to distinguish it from Mooloolaba which is 25 km closer to the beach. It is a small town on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, situated north of Landsborough on the main railway line from Brisbane with regular services southbound to Brisbane and northbound to Nambour and Gympie from Mooloolah railway station.

The Mooloolah River forms part of the eastern boundary.

Quota Memorial Park, Nambour

N amb OU r

Nambour is a flourishing town on the edge of the mountains that make up the Sunshine Coast Hinterland but is also so close to the famous Sunshine Coast beaches.

Like so many of the towns in this remarkable area, Nambour has a great ‘sense of community’. While many people head to the Sunshine Coast looking for a sea-change, tree-changers head to Nambour and get the best of both worlds.

Nambour has a flourishing retro and vintage scene. It is the perfect place to discover original items and treasurers from times past. There are also unique cafes and quirky bars, a craft brewery and an impressive line-up of events scheduled throughout the year including Queensland Garden Expo, Retro Rocks, Classic Car shows and the Collectorama Fairs.

There are interactive artworks to experience as well as large-scale public paintings and sculptures, plus great parks, and walking tracks along Petrie Creek. Enjoy the country hospitality for a day trip or stay overnight. You may be surprised by what you discover!

P a L mw OODS

The Palmwoods area makes a lovely drive through the country side, situated in the valley below the Blackall Range, on the coastal side.

The small town now known as Palmwoods (named after the Piccabeen Palms that grow in the area) was originally called Merriman Flats and is at the Northern end of the valley. It can be reached via the ‘Hunchy’ or Razorback Road from Montville, or from the Bruce Highway via Kiel Mountain.

There are also unique cafes, boutique shops and quirky bars and local events scheduled throughout the year including Time Warp Festival.

A stones throw from the Big Pineapple, and Nambour, it is a luscious green hilly area, and a gateway to the coast. A great area to sit in a café with a good book as you watch the world go by.

wiTT a

Fresh air, peace and tranquillity. That’s what is on offer in the small hamlet of Witta.

Witta offers the chance to stroll the few streets that make up the little village and take in some fresh air or perhaps drop into the general store. Although the general store is a modern building, the owner, George Soady, says there was once an older store on that site. Further down the road from the store is the original Witta School. The Witta School is now a community facility with toilets, shady areas and picnic tables. Across the way from the school, the Witta Recreational Club has a children’s playground and a large playing field.

But Witta’s best-kept secrets are twofold. Just across the road from the store is what the locals boast is the best view of the head of the Mary Valley that gives rise to the Mary River. The second secret is historical - the old Witta Cemetery. A walk around Witta Cemetery proffers a snapshot of the early settlers. Scattered across the cemetery are the names of the first German families who settled at Witta. Curiously, pictures or symbols accompany many of the inscriptions on the gravestones. The symbols indicate the interests of the deceased like musical notes, piano, horse rider, fisherman and sailing ships. Then there are epitaphs like ‘It’s not the first game that counts, it’s the last one.

Woombye is located on the Sunshine Coast hinterland in Queensland. The name is derived from words from the local Aboriginal language – a place (wumbai) of black snake or (wambai) black myrtle or axe handle made from black myrtle. The relaxed and social lifestyle is complemented with the famous pub, the bowls club, and the local tennis courts. Woombye is home to one of the longest established soccer clubs on the Sunshine Coast, the Woombye Snakes and is also the location of a tourist icon

The Big Pineapple.

The iconic Big Pineapple is back, up and running. This heritage-listed tourist attraction originally opened in 1971 has a renewed presence in the town. You can again climb the Big Pineapple, explore the process of pineapple farming and enjoy the fabulous views of the observation deck. Don’t forget the train ride and visit the café for a step back in history!

Also not forgetting the Wildlife HQ Zoo (previously the Alma Park Zoo). They moved to their permanent home at the Big Pineapple in 2014. The Zoo accommodates over 200 animals and the keepers are focused on providing lifetime care for the animals whilst educating families and children about our environment and conservation.

Y a ND i N a

One of the oldest towns on the Sunshine Coast, Yandina has the magnificent Maroochy River flowing through the heart of the town and it is home to the iconic Ginger Factory. The village is packed with vibrant and eclectic fashion, food, antiques and artisan retailers encouraging a silent anything funky and groovy theme.

Just outside of Yandina is Wappa Dam and Falls where waterfalls cascade over rocks into a stunning swimming hole in the Maroochy River. Yandina is a hidden treasure in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and waiting for you to discover its magic today.

Culture

Culture and History

Culturally significant sites throughout this area demonstrate continual use of this land over thousands of years by First Nations people.

For countless generations, the Blackall Range has held spiritual significance for many Indigenous people throughout South East Queensland.

Living a traditional lifestyle, Kabi Kabi families journeyed through this area, staying for varying periods of time in one place depending on seasonal resources available. As they journeyed, reliable water sources were important in determining camp locations. Natural resources were plentiful and families were self-sufficient.

When the nut crop peaked every three years, Kabi Kabi and neighbouring Wakka Wakka people hosted the Bonyee Festival. Many invited guests travelled great distances from coastal and inland areas to share food, songs and dances, arrange marriages, and other social interactions. A large grassy area near Baroon Pocket was an important gathering place.

Baroon Pocket is in the traditional country of the Nalbo clan of the Jinibara People. The Jinibara People proudly showcased their connection to the forested hills of their country by using symbolic fern designs in their body paint. The Baroon Pocket Indigenous location is much easier to access than the other two sites on this list. Baroon Pocket was the focal point for one of the best known gatherings of Indigenous people in South East Queensland, the Bunya Nut Festival. Every three years or so, there would be a bumper crop yield from the Bunya Pine, which would herald clan gatherings of hundreds, and sometimes thousands of Indigenous Australians. Traditionally, the ‘Bunya’ nuts would be roasted on hot stones on camp fires.

The Kabi Kabi First Nation People welcome you to the Bora Ring in the Glass House Mountains!

People gathered here for business, dancing and ceremonies. In this region, boras are called durns. The durn is a large raised circle of earth made by the women within an Indigenous clan. A smaller circle, known as a kippa was usually located about sixty metres away and connected to the durn by a pathway. Male initiates used the kippa for learning and ceremony. People would gather at the Bora Ring and together, with a Bora Council, would make important decisions on behalf of their mob.

Allow the silence of the Bora grounds to envelop you, where they once echoed with the sounds and colour of traditional Indigenous gatherings.

The Kabi Kabi First Nation People welcome you to the Axe Grinding Grooves in Little Rocky Creek!

The 200 million year old sandstone and water flow at the Little Rocky Creek created the perfect spot for grinding tools such as axe heads, spearheads and cutting stones, etching a glimpse into days of old. Both the Kabi Kabi and the Jinibara people used this location to make and sharpen their tools as well as to build canoes and to find and crush their food.

This Indigenous Stone Grinding Site showcases the creativity of the Gubbi Gubbi people in creating the tools they required to live and hunt.

Tibrogargan was the father of all the tribes and Beerwah was his wife, and they had many children.

Coonowrin, the eldest; the twins, Tunbubudla; Miketeebumulgrai; Elimbah whose shoulders were bent because she carried many cares; the little one called Round because she was so fat and small; and the one called Wild Horse since he always strayed away from the others to paddle out to sea.

One day when Tibrogargan was gazing out to sea, he perceived a great rising of the waters. He knew then that there was to be a very great flood and he became worried for Beerwah, who had borne him many children and was again pregnant and would not be able to reach the safety of the mountains in the west without assistance.

So he called to his eldest son, Coonowrin, and told him of the flood which was coming and said, “Take your mother, Beerwah, to the safety of the mountains while I gather your brothers and sisters who are at play and I will bring them along.”

When Tibrogargan looked back to see how Coonowrin was tending to his mother he was dismayed to see him running off alone. Now this was a spiritless thing for Coonowrin to do, and as he had shown himself to be a coward he was to be despised.

Tibrogargan became very angry and he picked up his nulla nulla and chased Coonowrin and cracked him over the head with a mighty blow with such force that it dislocated Coonowrin’s neck, and he has never been able to straighten it since.

By and by, the floods subsided and, when the plains dried out the family was able to return to the place where they lived before. Then, when the other children saw Coonowrin they teased him and called “How did you get your wry neck?” and this made Coonowrin feel ashamed.

Coonowrin went to Tibrogargan and asked for forgiveness, but the law of the tribe would not permit this. And he wept, for his son had disgraced him. Now the shame of this was very great and Tibrogargan’s tears were many and, as they trickled down they formed a stream which winded its way to the sea.

Coonowrin went then to his mother, Beerwah, but she also cried, and her tears became a stream and flowed away to the sea. Then, one by one, he went to his brothers and sisters, but they all cried at their brother’s shame.

Then Tibrogargan called to Coonowrin and asked why he had deserted his mother and Coonowrin replied, “She is the biggest of us all and should be able to take care of herself.” But Coonowrin did not know that his mother was again with child, which was the reason for her grossness. Tibrogargan put his son behind him and vowed he would never look at him again.

Even to this day Tibrogargan gazes far, far out to sea and never looks at Coonowrin. Coonowrin hangs his head in shame and cries, and his tears run off to the sea, and his mother, Beerwah, is still pregnant, for, you see, it takes many years to give birth to a mountain.
