We have everything from award winning high end dining to boutique retailers making unique morsels. Montville is home to two extraordinary food retailers, Fudgyboombahs make handmade fudge on the premise and have customers from all over the world, the owners Greg and Gail Jones are nearly always in store and always ready for a bit of sweet talk. Their range of sweet treats even includes astronaut food, so if you are thinking of heading into space then don’t leave without a few packets of this strange but edible essential. Then there is Monty’s of Montville with 43 milkshake flavours including liquorice for those with an adventurous pallet. In keeping up with the Jones’s the Monty’s proprietor Greg Burnett is often on hand restocking his massive range of Queensland products with 98 per cent of them from the Sunshine Coast region, oh and ask him about his gluten free waffle cones, they are amazing. Now there is nothing like the basics and you can’t beat a fresh made scone. The best scones in Montville are served at Camphor Cottage, owner and best scone maker in the world Mary is also in the kitchen most days, after you enjoy those scrumptious scones check out the huge Dr Seuss range there is a double wow factor at Camphor Cottage. The recent Curated Plate food festival showcased the variety and quality of the region’s produce, delivered by local providores, prepared exquisitely by the best chefs and presented in stunning and unique locations. I had the pleasure of dining under the stars at Flaxton Gardens, sampling beautiful cheeses from Kenilworth, wagyu beef from Kilcoy and a panna cotta made from camel milk sourced from QCamel right here on the Sunshine Coast. This was an experience to be remembered, and I’m looking forward to the next occasion. For another venue worth trying, you can’t go past the Montville Cafe, Bar and Grill in Montville, open seven days a week offering a menu to suit all tastes delivered with friendly service and a warm atmosphere. Whether you dine in the warmth of the restaurant or the relaxed beer garden, the menu is sure to impress. From succulent steaks to the awe inspiring King Henry Ribs, you are sure to leave satisfied. On a recent flight to Mt Isa, I was delighted to read about one of Maleny’s favourite cafes was mentioned for their amazing pies. In a feature article recognising Australia’s best meat pies, Maple 3 Cafe made the grade for its crisp, golden baked Killarney beef pies lovingly crafted by chef Mark Hutchinson. It just goes to show that you don’t need to go too far from home to discover the delights of the Hinterland.

Maleny’s singing chef hits high notes in hotel kitchen

Double concert weekend unites the classical and bohemian

Hotel Maleny chef Jo Veniamakis has brought a happy vibe and a surprising menu to the Hotel Maleny.

By Janine Hill if music is the food of love, diners at Maleny Hotel are leaving with full bellies and hearts. The head chef – manager at the Hotel Maleny, Jo Veniamakis, loves nothing more than to belt out a tune while cooking up her kitchen creations. And the more orders she has in front of her, the more she sings. “When it’s very busy, I sing the most. Happy chef – happy food,” she said. The singing chef’s repertoire includes renditions of hits by Ed Sheeran, Adele, and Dido.

Everything, even the sauces, is made from scratch. “A Greek who loves cooking”, Ms Veniamakis gets her kicks out of cooking for others and making them happy with food. “Most head chefs don’t go out and talk to their customers, but when you walk out and speak to all of your customers and they’ve all got the biggest grins on their faces, and they’re all happy, it’s a happy, enjoyable atmosphere, it’s really good.” And if someone wants to join in the singalong, even better.

Ms Veniamakis has been singing since she was a teenager. “I went to a kids’ eisteddfod when I was about 15 but I got off the stage three times – I was too shy,” she said.

THEY might seem like an odd couple but Lucas Parklands at Montville and The Shared at Yandina have more in common than you think.

“I’m pretty good with Ed Sheeran but I don’t always make it through an Adele song,” she admitted. Hotel supervisor Mel Patterson-Gray, who is known to harmonise when she can, said Ms Veniamakis’ singing helped create a happy, relaxed environment for staff which translated to the customers’ dining experience. “I think singing bonds you with the customers, it bonds you all together. It just shows Jo is passionate about what she does,” she says. And customers have warmed to the changes Ms Veniamakis has made since arriving at the hotel in nearly 16 months ago.

The number of chefs working at the hotel has multiplied from one to four to cope with the increased workload. Ms Veniamakis was working at the Social Brew on the Gold Coast, where trade had more than quadrupled under her kitchen leadership, when she was head-hunted by the Hotel Maleny owner Tony Walsh. Since she joined the hotel, it’s become a full house most nights, with many diners pleasantly surprised at finding food beyond the traditional pub fare. “All the food is made in-house, not from a packet. It’s not pub-style food. Everyone likes it,” Ms Veniamakis said. “It’s not about what you can do at a pub. It’s about what the customer wants.” Dining manager Helen Harrop said the popularity of the food was reflected in bookings for meals.

The Felix and Oscar of venues share common ground in each developing the musical future of their hinterland communities on the Sunshine Coast.

Lucas Parklands, which has two grand pianos, including the Flame Mahogany, the last Steinway built with ivory keys, will provide a piano for Konstantin’s concert at The Shared.

The chalk-and-cheese couple have now united for a concert weekend on September 29 and 30 during which each will host Siberian piano virtuoso Konstantin Shamray.

MC Meg Lucas, Lucas Parklands co-host Lee Lucas, and The Shared’s Boogie Man Musician Derek Payne, aka Boogie, will work together to ensure the best experience for audience members.

Konstantin performs internationally and is considered by some to be the best young pianist in the world.

The concert weekend has been months in the making and will not be the last.

He will play at the purpose-built Lucas Parklands in an afternoon concert from 2.30pm on September 29.

With a focus on good food and a good atmosphere, Ms Veniamakis has drawn customers who had given up on pub dining back to the hotel.

The gifted young man has extended his stay in the area to participate in the ground-breaking concert weekend and will perform from 7.30pm the evening prior, September 28, at The Shared. Konstantin’s repertoire will differ between concerts to suit each venue. Lucas Parklands, set in the beauty and peace of lush rainforest, has been hosting classical concerts since 2008. The 150-seat acoustically brilliant auditorium, designed by Ian Lucas, is described as one of the top two or three performance venues of its size in the world. International artists to visit include Ukrainian pianist Anna Fedorova, French pianist Pascal Rogé, Konstantin Shamray and Ukrainian-born Alexey Yemtsov who performed at the White House for President Bill Clinton.

Anna Federova has accepted an invitation to perform at Lucas Parklands in 2020 and has agreed to participate in the next Lucas Parklands/The Shared concert weekend. In contrast, The Shared is a converted 100-year-old stock feeds shed, a café, lounge, and multi-functional event and workshop space with a contemporary bohemian atmosphere.

“To have 110 booked for Friday night in a country town – it’s unbelievable,” she said. Hotel owner Tony Walsh descrbed Ms Veniamakis as “a real little dynamo”. “People come for a nice meal out, a good atmosphere, and she supports all of that, the way she moves around and greets everyone. And sings,” he said.

The vibrant, not-for-profit venue is managed by an enthusiastic team of likeminded individuals and hosts a variety of music, although it is well known for its reggae, roots and blues mixes.

you are planning to take a short break or holiday, so naturally you head to the internet for choice and convenience. There are now a huge number of online booking services in the market place, all purporting to give prospective guests the best possible deal, but here are some tips to consider to help you make the most of your bookings and get what you really want. The online booking services do not own the properties they advertise. They are advertising agencies and have no vested interest in the holiday accommodation you choose. The owners of these properties do want to give you the best experience possible; they want you to love their property, and that commitment will usually start right from the first phone call. The booking services advertise that there are no booking fees. There are no added fees to you the guest, but there is a significant commission charged to the accommodation provider. The booking site will advertise that they offer the lowest tariff, but most contracts are set so that property owners cannot offer other online sites a lower price. It’s a good idea to phone the property direct as you may be able to take advantage of a personal offer, or at least book directly on their website. By booking direct you may be able to achieve a better rate.

The descriptions of accommodation properties on the booking sites are sometimes quite restricted. Again, phone the accommodation provider directly and talk about what you really need. If you book for two adults, then don’t be shocked if you are offered a king bed when you arrive, even if it is you and your cousin. If you need individual beds then call and talk about that. If you need to check if the property welcomes children, if you need a cot or a high chair or are concerned about the safety aspects of fireplaces, then phone and talk to the property directly.

Looking onto the Razorback Road from the top of the Montville Footbridge. Montville’s iconic Centenary Footbridge, which also serves as an archway entrance into the hinterland town, was upgraded a couple of years ago and is very popular with visitors. The footbridge provides a convenient and colonial style pedestrian connector over Razor Back Road, from the Village Green and St Mary’s church to Montville State School and the nearby Razor Back Lookout and its expansive views toward the coast and into the valley The footbridge, which first opened in 1986, spans the Razor Back Road entrance into the town, has had its weathered decking replaced. When visitors arrive in Montville via the Razorback Road they pass under the bridge, a very quaint sight that has proven popular with budding photographers. If you are driving from Brisbane, take the Palmwoods exit and follow the signs to Montville. Once in Montville you will find a blend of Tudor, Irish and English cottages made from log or stone as well as Swiss and Bavarian chalets, an old waterwheel, colonial and old Queenslanders and of course, one of the most spectacular views over the Sunshine Coast region.

By Angus Richard One of the major attractions of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is the profusion and quality of its walks. Having completed seven years as an Information Centre volunteer in the early days I can attest to the interest from visitors in the variety of walks this region has to offer. Some 60% of enquires through the Information Centres were about the walks. Visitors just wanted a map, some directions and into it! It is all very professional now but in the early days of the Montville Information Centre I confess that some of the walks I had never done. However my creative description of such ‘unexperienced’ walks was almost Shakespearian in its imaginative depths. I would wax lyrical about glades, dappled sunlight and gentle waterfalls and send the visitor bubbling with excitement on their way. Surprisingly no one ever came back to complain that there was no moss encrusted stream or nymphs draped in flimsy veils cavorting in some ferny grove. I reasoned that my fanciful descriptions might just have been unexpectedly fulfilled (because the area is pretty special) or the visitors I had inspired were kicking themselves in in the belief that they had taken “a wrong turn” and so missed the highlights I had created! Over the years I somewhat redeemed myself and have walked most of the menu the Hinterland has to offer. Sadly however the nymphs remain elusive. Churchill enjoyed walking. He did it to combat the stress that wartime leadership generated. Someone suggested to him that golf would deliver similar relaxation to which he famously responded that “golf is a good walk spoilt!” Let me share with you my favourite walks but before you rush off, some common sense advice about walking in the Hinterland: 1. Carry water with you, wear a hat, and take a rain coat and wear good walking shoes. It blows me away when I see a young couple embarking on an 11km hike in thongs, no warm clothes or food and carrying a Coke bottle….true! 2. Ensure you have enough time to finish before dark. We had a young single lady from Manchester embark on a half day walk at 3pm. No water, no warm clothing and her mobile phone battery was low. Night fell and it is VERY dark in a rainforest. She was lost but managed to call us which was lucky in that in many areas of the walks there is no phone coverage. We ended up getting the police and instructed her to follow the path in the direction of their vehicle sirens. (The greatest excitement after the sirens went off was the fleeing procession of battered Ute’s that departed the forest at speed in every direction with

strange crops in pots in the back! We retrieved the young lady successfully but it could have been a cold and frightening night for her. So make the time to finish your walk in daylight.) 3. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. If you don’t show on schedule your family may be delighted if your will is in their favour or they may raise the alarm. It’s a sensible precaution and particularly if you plan to walk some of the more remote tracks. 4. No dogs are allowed in the National Parks and on the walks described. So let us talk about some of a couple of enjoyable walks on offer: 1. Kondalilla Falls has two circuits. The Picnic Creek circuit (moderate) of 1.7kms for which you should allow 45 minutes to 1 hour. This circuit takes an easy walk across Picnic Creek and includes Eucalypt forest and rainforest species. Enjoy the views from the lookouts along the way. The Kondalilla Falls circuit (moderate to hard) of 4.7kms for which you should allow 1.5 to 2 hours. A reasonable level of fitness is required. Very popular with the young in summer with the rock pools and waterfalls. The walk winds down to the base of the waterfall, then to the rock pool on Skene Creek and back up the escarpment to join the Picnic Creek circuit and from there up to the carpark. You need to have a liking for steps to enjoy this walk. There are over 150 of them so not for the faint hearted but certainly worth the effort. 2. We don’t have enough space in this brief article to do The Great Walk justice. The 58km Great Walk provides sections of shorter walks for the day visitor plus brilliant opportunities for the experienced walker to undertake a challenging adventure including camping out for several nights along the walk. If you wish to camp you need to book a site which you can do online at www.qld.gov.au/camping or call 137 468. There are a number of access points along the walk so sections can be walked in hours or days depending on the time you wish to immerse yourself in this amazing adventure. Best bet is to pick up a comprehensive map and some good advice from a Sunshine Coast Information Centre or visit www.hinterlandtourism.com.au. The choice is simply immense but many of the walks are one way. You may need to organise a pickup at the end of your walk. Many of the local accommodation properties provide this service free of charge so a bit of planning is needed to enjoy sections of or all of the Great Walk. So there you have it. Just a brief glimpse of a small part of the wide and exciting walks menu that is right on your doorstep. The choice is really inclusive. You will find detailed maps of the most popular walks at local information centres. The walks of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, so close to the city but truly a wonderful world away! Montville residents and visitors might be interested to know they very well could have instead been living in a town called Razorback.

The Razorback Road was improved in 1910 and the town’s first telephone exchange opened in 1917.

The beautiful town overlooking the valley toward the coast was named Razorback as settlers started arriving from 1887. However, 10 years later, the town was renamed Montville.

The snapshot of local history is revealed on a monument at the Razorback Road lookout, which is located just passed Montville State School.

From there, the township started a more rapid development, with the Montville School of Arts opening in 1903, more pineapple farm established in 1905, and the first local guest house opening in 1906.

The details of the township’s past – detailed on the monument plaque “Razorback-Montville: A brief history” – is worth an inspection by locals and visitors alike.

As such Persephone was required to return each year to do six months of community service in the realm of the dead. Her absence from our world is reflected in the barren winter months and her return as “Mother Nature” in the bounty of the spring and summer! Certainly “Mother Nature” has smiled upon the Hinterland. Research has proven that a walk through a rainforest has significant benefits to both our physical and mental wellbeing. Indeed a twenty minute walk through green space for a child with ADHA can improve concentration as well as or better than medication. It is all about regenerating, nurturing and healing.

“Seafood in the hills?!” That was said in 1992 when the Terrace Seafood Restaurant opened its doors in Maleny. 26 years later, that is still what is being served, fresh from Mooloolaba!

By Angus Richard from time immemorial across the history of civilization the “Mother” figure has been inseparable from the natural environment around us. The idea of “Mother Nature” embodies all the aspects of life-giving, nurturing and regeneration of the natural world that so correctly remains the domain of the female of the species. Go back to Greek mythology and “Mother Nature” emerges in the form of Persephone who was the daughter of Demeter, the goddess of harvest. Along comes the disreputable Hades who was not exactly a barrel of laughs being god of the dead. He took a fancy to Persephone and with presumably free

movie tickets, a six pack of vodka mixers and a bunch of flowers nicked from the local cemetery, lures her off down to the underworld, the realm of the dead.

Owners, Craig and Pauline Mitchell, have built a strong business with a continual team of wonderful staff, providing fine and friendly service combined with great food and views. Located at Cairncross Corner, just outside the township of Maleny, the Terrace opens for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Sunday inclusive and is fully licenced. It is closed on Mondays.

With Persephone now living in the western suburbs of the underworld her mother lost focus, had a Bex and a good lie-down and no crops would grow. The harvests were as poor as a seniors meal at a pub, the plantings failed and it was generally agreed amongst the gods that mankind was about to fall off the perch. They had not counted on Zeus who stepped in, cut up Hades credit card, repossessed his Harley, forced him to release Persephone and stick to lightly flavoured sparkling water.

If you are lucky the mist will slowly rise from the lake to soften the evening as the pale shades of the twilight deepen. It is a time quite special that will touch you with its grace, colour, splendour and tranquillity. However “Mother Nature” and the great outdoors are not for all. To some the great outdoors is what you pass through to get from your house to your car. I have friends who think camping is spelt “Hilton 5 Star”. Outdoor activity can be anathema to many of the inner city goat’s cheese set. Famously Patrizia Gucci was asked if she would rather be wealthy or happy. She replied “I would rather weep in my Rolls Royce than be happy outdoors on a bicycle!” A somewhat eccentric mate explained to me the other day in all sincerity that of the wonders of “Mother Nature” a tree in summer is perhaps the most remarkable, with the possible exception of a Wombat singing “Embraceable You” in gumboots outside his derelict caravan when the moon is full. In his defence I have to say he makes extraordinary Calvados from an ancient still. “Mother Nature” is not to be taken lightly. She is not always bright, nurturing and joyous. She is birth as well as death, storms as well as tranquillity, darkness as well as sunrise. She demands respect. She is the cycle of life. As Peter Cundall, the cheerful and planted TV gardener put it “When I die I don’t want to stop working, so I have arranged to be buried in a compost heap!” Some years ago a young lady from Manchester was staying at cottages we were managing. Unbeknown to us she decided to embark on a walk through one of the more robust sections of a popular track. It was mid-afternoon and she took only a cell phone, no warm clothes, no water and was wearing thongs. Just on dark we got a call from her saying she was lost and that the battery on her phone was almost exhausted. We knew her approximate location. She was at a fork in the track and did not know which way to turn. We contacted the Police and went to the exit point of the track. It was black by now. The rainforest has no light at night. With the last gasp of the power in her cell phone we told her to walk towards the Police sirens and lights. She emerged unscathed but not before three very battered utes burst out of the undergrowth loaded with carefully tended plants in pots. The local covert horticulturalists mistaking the sirens for a raid. It all ended happily with laughter but it could have been serious.

By Kerry Brown it was the night every guest will remember forever. Flaxton Gardens hosted Dining Under The Stars on Saturday, 10th August with 175 guests arriving on a very cool and clear winter evening for a celebration of fine dining on exquisite local produce and wines.

Guests arrived just in time to see a magnificent sunset with clear skies and the crisp winter air adding extra colour to the spectacle it was the start of a very special evening. Released from the rough, carefully shaped, and polished to perfection. It's rare, it's precious and utterly unique. There will never be another one like it.

As the winter winds lashed the marquee guests settled quickly into a very cosy and elegant setting to experience the brilliance of Executive Chef Alan Thompson and his team showcasing the flavours of the Sunshine Coast.

Matching wines were served with each course as guests learned all about the local producers and their unique talents in bringing the paddock to the plate.

We know that what we do is something very special because there is nothing quite like the moment when an opal captures your heart.

It literally all ended with a bang as Fuse Pyrotechnics presented a dramatic fireworks display to chamber music and created an electric atmosphere that stirred emotions and moved some guests to tears.

A truly remarkable night and there was a double celebration as owner and Executive Chef Alan Thompson celebrated 10 years to the day at Flaxton Gardens. Alan’s illustrious career started when he first trained in New Zealand before heading to the UK where he worked with high profile chefs before opening his own fine dining restaurant in London then later in the Cotswold country side. His vision to create relaxed elegant dining is realised. Today Flaxton Gardens is famous for its high tea served on the terrace or in the beautiful gardens at Flaxton.
