Who Made Today? by Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins

Two people over a period of about three weeks asked me why our call to worship is offered in passive voice: “This is the day that has been made.” The simple answer is that it’s a choice. It’s no less correct than the active voice “this is the day that God has made” but it may be a bit more inclusive (and even more aligned with the Psalm from which we borrow it). Inclusive: Religion scholar (and humanist) Anthony Pinn understands “God” as “the indescribable more.” I often call the divine in prayer, “mystery beyond our naming.” Not everyone feels comfortable with (and some even feel threatened by) calling our Higher Power "God" (and we don't all mean the same thing when we say "God" anyway). And, even the most devout among us probably don't see our days being dealt to us like cards from a dealer. Avoiding “god-language” for this one phrase simply makes a bit of space for more kinds of people without taking anything away from traditionalists (God, Jesus, bible, church, prayer...these words will be heard throughout the hour). Aligned with scripture: The 118th Psalm refers to the divine as YHWH (an unpronounceable name for the divine that we add vowels to so we can say it – Yahweh); but the writer refers to YHWH by substituting the word Adonai (which is translated as LORD). So, most texts read, “This is the day the LORD has made…” that is, this is the day that YHWH, the ground of being, the unnamable and not fully knowable Reality has made.” To use the passive voice shares this ancient goal of not limiting the divine (the indescribable more) to any particular word or image. Using the passive voice for this one phrase is similar to our using gender inclusive language in the liturgy and multicultural images when illustrating sermons, reaching out to affirm and celebrate LGBTQ+ people, singing songs from multiple religious traditions as well as from the secular world, and including readings beyond the bible in most services. It’s one more attempt to include more kinds of people in our beautiful, blended worship experience. This is the day that has been made, let us rejoice and be glad in it! A PRAYER FOR 2024 by Rev. It’s a time to renew spiritual practices or take them deeper. Lent is a time for “alms-giving” (giving generously to church and charities), regular worship, and daily prayer. 5
You will be able to pray with us on Thursdays (Evensong), join us daily on Facebook for Midday Prayer, watch The Queer God Squad each day, worship with us on Sundays, and bring non-perishable food items throughout Lent to support our food sharing program. We invite you to observe these Lenten disciplines as a way to grow spiritually. ASH WEDNESDAY – There will be no worship service on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 14) since it is Valentine’s Day, but we will be imposing ashes from 11 am to 1 pm on that day here at the Cathedral. A deacon will be present to impart ashes in the Front Steps/Narthex area. Our Wednesday Give Back at Casa Monarca on Feb. 14 will include some special touches for Valentines Day. Take your sweetie out on Valentine’s Day to Casa Monarca (2980 N. Federal Hwy) as a gift to her/him/them and also to Sunshine Cathedral. EVENSONG – Thursdays in Lent, beginning February 15 at 7 pm, we will have a weekly prayer service that will include readings, moments of silence, candle lighting, and choruses from the Taize tradition. Taize songs are choruses in multiple languages, usually scripture verses, that are repeated several times to create a meditative atmosphere and transport the worshiper beyond discursive thinking to a focused, rich, contemplative experience of the Divine. We are offering this as a spiritual discipline for Lent. SCCPA – Friday, February 16 - SC Center for the performing Arts presents Matt Alber - Matt is a Grammy® Award-winning recording artist, filmmaker and teaching artist in public schools across America. In 1998 Matt joined the classical acapella ensemble Chanticleer. After five seasons with the ensemble, he began a solo career as a singer/songwriter. His original songs and reinterpretations of pop classics appear regularly television series’ like Bones (ABC), The Fosters (ABC Family) & 911 Lonestar (FOX.) Matt has also been presented by Lincoln Center in New York on the esteemed American Songbook Series and on stages around the globe. Matt also works as a teaching artist both here and abroad. He has traveled as an Artist Diplomat of the US State Department to Sudan, Russia, Kosovo, Estonia & Finland. Dedicating her life to the friendly citizens and responsible merchants of her hometown of Richfield Minnesota ("where butter is a spice and gravy is a beverage"), Miss Richfield 1981 is a drag legend. This Midwestern maven wins over theater audiences with an interactive format that combines homespun warmth and edgy improv, leaving audiences in hysterics. During the pandemic, Miss Richfield created the popular online franchise “Bingo Bonanza”. This live show, which continues to this day, gave the audience the opportunity to play interactive bingo games at home while providing comic relief and community during difficult times. Over the years, Miss Richfield has appeared on numerous television shows including "Today" on NBC, "Cake Boss" on TLC, “Watch What Happens Live” on Bravo, and as part of the cast of “Talk Show The Game Show” on TruTV. Additionally, she has hosted corporate events for companies including Amazon, Norwegian Cruise Lines, and Bank of America. Miss Richfield hosts events and donates to numerous LGBT charity events locally in Minneapolis and Provincetown including JustUs Health, Helping Our Women, and OutFront Minnesota, as well as national organizations including Planned Parenthood and Human Rights Campaign. SAINTS OF THE WEEK February 11: Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes - St. Mary is said to have made an appearance to Bernadette Soubirous (St. Bernadette) in a cave in Lourdes, France in 1858. Other Marian apparitions followed. The spring at the site is thought to offer healing miracles to many. Fanny Jane Crosby (1820-1915) — Hymn writer and musician. Though she went blind at six weeks of age, Fanny Crosby became one of the most prolific hymn writers in America. She eventually wrote more than 8,000 hymns. Among those that have been deeply loved (especially in Evangelical churches) include: “Blessed Assurance,” “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior,” and “To God be the Glory.” February 12: Brother Lawrence (1614 – 1691) – at about the age of 40, former soldier turned valet “Nicholas Herman” joined the Carmelite order in France and would then be known as “Lawrence of the Resurrection” or “Brother Lawrence.” He was a simple, barefoot monk. He spent most of his monastic career working in the monastery kitchen, and in his final years repaired sandals (a barefoot monk repairing sandals so others could walk in comfort was apparently very in character for Brother Lawrence).

He was known for his peaceful demeanor and happy nature. He developed a form of praying from the heart, of being in constant communion with the divine, that he called “practicing the presence of God.” People would write to him or visit him for spiritual guidance. After Lawrence died, Father Joseph de Beaufort gathered many of Lawrence’s letters and published them as The Practice of the Presence of God, which is a text still appreciated by Protestants and Catholics alike. Immanuel Kant (1724 – 1804) - born in Prussia and became a professor of logic and metaphysics. He separated the historical Jesus and the mystical Christ. February 13: Ss. Polyeuct & Nearchus (3rd century) - Nearchus was Christian, but Polyeuct was not. Polyeuct converted from paganism to Christianity for Nearchus. In 259 Polyeuct was martyred by decapitation. Shortly before he was executed, he spoke his last words to Nearchus: “Remember our secret vow.” Thus Polyeuct is known as a protector of vows and avenger of broken promises. Absolom Jones (1746 – 1818) - a former slave that would become the first African American Episcopal Priest in the newly formed United States of America. Jones preached that God was a loving Parent who always took the side of “the oppressed and distressed.” February 14: St. Valentine (d. 269)—Martyr. Though St. Valentine has long since removed from the lists of ‘official’ saints, Valentine’s Day has been taken over by the greeting card industry and become fixed in the popular calendar of most people. It seems to have its origins in England, where it was noted that birds began to pair and mate around the feast of St. Valentine. The original Valentine was likely a Christian priest in Rome who was beheaded for refusing to renounce his faith. He gave his heart to God, his divine lover. Sally Gross (1953-2014) – South African intersex Roman Catholic priest. Gross was assigned a male identity at birth and raised as a boy. In the 1990 Gross discovered and disclosed that she was indeed female (and was stripped of her priestly status and credentials). Afterward, she embraced Quaker and Buddhist spiritualities and became an intersex activist. James A. Pike (1913 – 1969) - early proponent of ordination of women, racial desegregation, and the acceptance of LGBT people in the Church. He was the Bishop of California in The Episcopal Church. He held two law degrees from Yale and a seminary degree from Union Theological Seminary in NYC. Pike invited Martin Luther King Jr. to speak at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco in 1965 following his march to Selma. After his son’s untimely death, Pike became interested in the paranormal (he even tried to reach his late son through psychics). He died in the Israeli desert while researching a book he wanted to write (coincidentally, about Jesus wandering in the desert). His rented car got stuck and he and his wife Diane tried to walk to safety, but were farther away from any community than they realized. While wandering lost in the desert, Pike fell down a steep canyon where he died. Diane found help and survived. February 16: Janani Luwum (1924-1977)—Anglican Archbishop of Uganda and martyr. Luwum was Archbishop of Uganda during the dictatorship of General Idi Amin. He
was not the type to be drawn toward social justice issues or protests; he tried at first to maintain a neutral stance of cooperation. Luwum realized the church could no longer stand silently by as Amin’s paranoid reign of terror led to the murder of tens of thousands. He was confronted with trumped up charges, and when ordered to sign a confession he responded by praying. This sent Amin into a rage, and he drew a pistol and executed Luwum himself. Elizabeth Searle Lamb (January 22, 1917 – February 16, 2005) was an American poet who wrote several spiritual articles for Divine Science publications. February 17: Giardano Bruno (1548 – 1600) - taught that God is everywhere imminent throughout the universe. Bruno was an Italian poet and philosopher who wrote, “God is the Principle of unity in all activity and is the Principle of Oneness…” Referring to divine Mind, he held that Mind and matter are one.
