If you’ve ever enjoyed a tasting flight mere yards from where the grapes that made the wine you’re drinking were grown; if you’ve ever driven the winding roads of a viticultural area; or—let’s just say it—if you have a pulse, “Wine Country” is one of those phrases that makes you go aaaahhh. The picturesque rolling hills, the people passionate about turning fickle grapes and unpredictable weather into transcendent juice, the pursuit of an irrational but always delightful tradition, charming hotels, and, above all, delicious wine often served with exceptional food.
It’s with that vision of a complete and total Western lifestyle experience in mind that we put together this issue to accompany the announcement of the winners of the annual Sunset International Wine Competition. Thousands of bottles from the wonderful wine countries of the world were tasted, the winners selected, the medals given. And to honor the wineries and people who have created such drinkable art, we’re sharing stories of visionary hoteliers and winemakers, restaurateurs, architects, and designers who create the living backdrop against which wine is grown, made, poured, and enjoyed.

A new kind of inn brings Palisociety’s irreverent charm and layered design sensibility to wine country.
With its cream-washed walls, plaid textiles, and checkerboard floors, Le Petit Pali St. Helena reimagines the classic Napa Valley inn. Founder Avi Brosh shares how the brand’s signature style translates from coast to vineyard—and why this jewel-box property reflects both California history and fresh vision. For Avi Brosh, founder of Palisociety, the idea behind Le Petit Pali has always been to flip the traditional bed-and-breakfast model on its head. “California’s most desirable towns were built in more modest times,” he says. “Those early lodgings were simple, personal,
and connected to place.” With the St. Helena property, located on three acres surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills, Brosh set out to create a bespoke version of that vintage hotel spirit, one that’s layered, irreverent, and unmistakably Napa.
What inspired you to bring Le Petit Pali to Napa Valley, and how did you want it to feel different from your coastal and urban locations? We started Le Petit Pali with the idea of redefining the classic B&B and creating something bespoke,
layered, and deeply tied to its surroundings. St. Helena had the right scale and history. It’s a smalltown setting with real character. It’s about offering an almost residential experience.
You’ve described the design as “irreverent style” layered with Napa’s classic aesthetic. What’s an example of a detail that captures that balance? There are no rules behind our aesthetic. It’s a mix of eras, silhouettes, and residential details. It’s not punk rock, but it has that independent spirit. Think preppy meets

jazz—elegant, but never stiff.
How did the property’s three acres of vineyards and natural landscape influence your design decisions?
The surroundings dictated a lot. The flow between interiors and vineyards, the way terraces frame the views. The palette and patterns nod to American and European bohemian traditions. There are stripes, florals,
and textures that feel lived in but elevated.
The Main House feels like a private home. How did you approach circulation and communal spaces like the breakfast rooms and Garden Bar? Many of our guests are design-savvy. They appreciate thoughtful spatial flow. We designed rooms where people naturally gather and start conversations. The
lounge, breakfast area, and firepit are social moments built into the architecture.
You’ve partnered with makers like Woodhouse Chocolate, Faust Winery, and Model Bakery. How do these collaborations shape the guest experience?
These partnerships create an instant connection to St. Helena. Guests recognize a Model Bakery English
muffin or a local chocolate and smile. It’s a nod to place. Good design isn’t just visual, it’s also cultural and sensory.
Napa Valley has no shortage of high-end inns. What makes Le Petit Pali’s design approach stand out?
We do what feels right and avoid the on-the-nose clichés. No surfboards on walls in Laguna; no heavy
red-green Napa tropes here. It’s about intuitive, layered storytelling. We aim for something personal and fresh.
From cream-washed walls to plaid textiles, what materials or colors were essential to your vision—and how do you source them? After 20 properties in five years, we’ve developed systems. I start sourcing a year out—mixing vintage finds with custom pieces. Today, 95% of guest room furniture is made inhouse. That control lets us shape silhouettes, proportions, and palette in a way that’s both nostalgic and playful.

Clark Ferrea Winery Redefines San Joaquin Wine Country
On the historic grounds of Zinc House Farm, the Franzia family’s newest project fuses wine, design, and sustainability—creating a destination that feels both timeless and boldly modern.
In Escalon, along a quiet stretch of Highway 120, the future of California wine country is taking shape. Clark Ferrea Winery, the newest chapter in the Franzia family’s storied winemaking legacy, is a vision for how wine, farming, and design can converge to tell a richer story about place.
Built on the historic grounds of Zinc House Farm, Clark Ferrea is a working winery, a farm, and a cultural hub rolled into one. The
10,000-square-foot arbor that greets visitors creates a dramatic threshold, framing views of the surrounding San Joaquin countryside and signaling that this is no ordinary winery visit. A monumental sculpture by British artist Conrad Shawcross anchors the landscape, offering a contemporary counterpoint to the rows of vines and farmland beyond.
Inside, designer Alexis Banks Humiston has crafted interiors that are both transportive and deeply rooted in California history. The centerpiece is a custom de Gournay wallpaper—three years in the making—that depicts a Yosemite-inspired scene in the style of Hudson River School luminists, its rose-gold accents catching the light like a Sierra sunset. The result is a tasting
room that feels like a living painting, a space where past and present coalesce.
Sustainability is at the heart of the project. The winery was designed with a high-performance building envelope, advanced energy systems, and regenerative farming practices that exceed environmental standards. Beyond wine, the property features an organic produce store highlighting Zinc House Farm’s own fruits, vegetables, and flowers alongside goods from neighboring farms. Programming is equally ambitious: seasonal camps for kids, workshops in regenerative farming and natural dyeing, and events that invite guests to engage with the land. “Everything either needs to have
flowers, beautiful leaves, or another element that shines,” says grounds supervisor David Anderson, who has added a rose garden featuring more than 400 species.
The winery’s very name honors Frances Zulieme Bell Clark and Teresa Ferroggiaro Ferrea—two pioneering women in the family’s lineage—while fourth-generation winemaker Carol Franzia crafts the wines. Together, they represent a continuation of the family’s mission: to make wine accessible, to celebrate the land, and to tell a story that is uniquely of California.

Pouring over wine labels for clues
about the liquid inside is a favorite pastime of aesthetic oenophiles. The font and the graphics have the potential to reveal the vintner’s taste and priorities in a way that a price point or a grape variety doesn’t. What’s even more revealing about their values is to see how a winemaker lives. Catch a glimpse of their turf, their tasting room, and (if you’re lucky) their home, and their point of view
is as clear as a Sonoma sky.
Winery owner and interior designer Jill Shadek and her husband and business partner Mike Lucia went all-in when they designed their Healdsburg home with an attached tasting room. The couple owns Cole Ranch and Rootdown, based in Mendocino and Healdsburg, and produce innovative, organic wines from dry-farmed vines with minimal intervention. When Shadek and Lucia hired Bay Area architectural designer Erik Kramer of the design/build firm Social Studio, they contracted Matthew Bowles of TenBooks Studio to join the team

and contribute to the design of their dream house. The goal was to create a property that embodies their commitment to sustainable practices, and their embrace of minimalism both in winemaking and design.
“That’s an interesting design challenge with a single-family home. We had to figure out how to let the public in and also maintain privacy in the home,” says Bowles. The upper two levels are the family living areas, and they’re more playful, with angular volumetric forms that create dramatic interior spaces.”
Initially, Kramer, Bowles, and Shadek intended to
modernize an existing 1960s house on the property, which had been trucked in from another location and nestled in the hillside. For better or worse, the team determined that a fresh start was in order.
“We kept that idea of partially burying the house in the earth in the design concept, but we decided to start over for a new build,” says Bowles. “The footprint of the house is the same as it was and we used a bit of the foundation. The low volume that’s in the hillside is clad in plaster, and that creates a massive, solid base to the house. The tasting room and the wine cellar are

down there and it doesn’t need air conditioning. It stays naturally cooled by the earth. It’s moody, dark, and durable. The upper two floors are lighter and more playful.”
Their design is an unapologetically modern, angular alternative to the area’s ubiquitous farmhouse. Unfinished Monterey Cypress board and batten exterior siding will silver over time. And the surrounding terraced garden lets the breathtaking natural surroundings take center stage. Inside, the team committed to using simple materials like corten steel, terrazzo tile, and dark wood paneling in exacting and creative ways.
“What’s crazy about the house is how detailed Jill allowed us to get,” says Bowles. “There’s nothing in the house that doesn’t flush out or plane out. All of the doors in that walnut paneling are blind and hidden. It’s a very high level of detailing that’s a pain in the butt for a contractor, but makes the house feel very integrated.”
Bowles describes the look as earthy modernism, which is matched by the palette of dusty rose, terracotta, and sky blue.
“It was really important to the three of us, Erik,
Jill, and myself, to use raw materials with integrity and honesty,” he says, pointing out the walnut kitchen cabinetry and subtle quartzite stone from Brazil. “We didn’t use a high gloss finish anywhere. For the stone, we went with a leathered finish that has a soft, supple feel.”
The home’s most remarkable feature happens to be in the most private space, the primary bathroom with a shower that opens up completely to a view of Chalk Hill.
“That sink is all Erik, who designed the marble vanity to run through the glass into the shower,” says Bowles. “We worked hard to get that zero-post corner so we could open up those windows, so it felt spacious and calming. And we got that top-down light like you’d get from a skylight, which is different from the light from a window. When you’re in there it feels like an outdoor shower about 30 feet off the ground.”
The result is equal parts rooted in nature and suspended in beautiful, open space. It’s both grounded and light as a feather, fun, not too serious, and punctuated with sunshine. Like you could bottle it and drink it, and savor every sip.

A little bit French, a lot L.A., Bar Etoile in L.A.’s emerging
Melrose Hill arts district is setting the bar high for a new model of wine bars in the West.

If it weren’t for this old bottle of French wine, this California neo-bistro might never have existed.
Many roads lead to a restaurant opening:
meals eaten, restaurants visited for inspiration, research trips taken, recipes tasted, Pinterests pinned, and for one partner at the new restaurant Bar Etoile in Los Angeles, a single bottle of wine in France. Bar Etoile co-owner Jill Bernheimer had never tasted anything like it: It was alive and vibrant and a little earthy, and maybe what you’d call funky. She was on vacation at a restaurant in Paris and had no idea that she was drinking a bottle made by one of the pioneers of the natural wine movement, that contested genre of fermented grape juice that most can agree is based on minimal intervention, wild yeast, possibly biodynamic, probably organic, likely regeneratively farmed. Inspired by this thrilling new-to-her (and at the time, newish to much of the United States) experience, she learned everything she could about natural wine, left her career in the entertainment industry, and opened a store specializing in natural wine, the first of its kind in Los Angeles. It’s called Domaine LA, which went on to spawn many imitators, and Bernheimer became known as a goddess of sorts of this lovely lowintervention movement. Her shop attracted Julian Kurland, a former beer sommelier and New York and L.A. restaurant veteran, who joined forces with Bernheimer at the shop and now as co-owner at Bar Etoile—the kind of restaurant with the right type of vibe, food, and wine to inspire career changes. Situated on a developing stretch of Western Avenue that’s home to a growing collection of award-winning restaurants, big-time and independent galleries, and fashion, furniture, and design stores, it’s very much of the moment in the evolution of this area of L.A. There’s the wine, of course, a wide-ranging list of natural-esque bottlings from around the world, smart cocktails, an elegant space designed by Lovers Unite with sexy banquettes and booths, a zinctopped bar in the center, and low, flattering lighting that combine to channel the chicer Parisian neo-bistros. The food from chef Travis Hayden is simple and artfully plated: chunky steak tartare, zippy crudo, two-day-brined rotisserie chicken with persimmon béarnaise, and, yes, steak frites. The recipes here are what we think of as the new California comfort cooking: built on well-sourced protein and farmers market ingredients; just rich enough to satisfy, but not so much to weigh you down; perfect with a good bottle of wine; perfect for a party to celebrate new beginnings.

Kumquat Gildas
Legend has it that the Gilda—the spicy, salty, classic Basque bar snack, or pintxo— was named after the Rita Hayworth character in the eponymous film. The version served at Bar Etoile incorporates tangy-sweet kumquats, adding another zippy layer of flavor to this superlative nibble. MAKES 12 GILDAS
6 kumquats, halved and seeds removed
12 pitted Castelvetrano olives
12 guindilla peppers
12 anchovies
12 martini skewers
1. For each skewer, start by threading one end of an anchovy onto the skewer.
2. Next, add an olive, then wrap the remaining anchovy around the olive and skewer the other end.
3. Follow by skewering a guindilla pepper, then finish with a kumquat half.
4. Repeat with the remaining ingredients to make 12 Gildas.
Blistered Snap Peas with Feta and Walnut Gremolata
Crunchy, sweet snap peas benefit from a green-fixing blanch and a quick turn in a super hot pan to play up their crisp character with a little toasty char. Rich walnut gremolata spiked with lemon and briny feta makes for a vibrant side dish.
SERVES 4
1 qt. snap peas, blanched, shocked, and dried
2 Tbsp. neutral oil
1 cup feta
1 cup walnut gremolata (see recipe at right)
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. lemon juice
1. Blanch the snap peas in boiling water for 15 to 20 seconds until bright green, then immediately transfer to ice water to cool completely. Drain and dry thoroughly.
2. Heat neutral oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear half the snap peas until blistered and slightly charred, then remove and refrigerate.
3. To assemble, toss the snap peas in a mixing bowl with walnut gremolata and lemon juice. Adjust seasoning with salt as needed.
4. Transfer to a serving dish and sprinkle feta on top.
Walnut Gremolata
¾ cup olive oil
¼ cup toasted walnuts
¼ cup parsley leaves
1/8 tsp. California chile powder
Zest of 1 lemon
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. microplaned or minced garlic
¼ tsp. kosher salt
1. In a food processor, combine all the ingredients and pulse until the parsley is finely chopped and the mixture is well blended.
2. Store any leftover gremolata in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Spiced Almonds
Not too spicy and not too sweet, this elevated take on bar snacks is deceptively simple, the ideal little crunchy and slightly spicy treat to nibble on while you sip wine.
SERVES 4
1 Tbsp. California chile powder
1 Tbsp. Guajillo chile powder
2 Tbsp. kosher salt
1 Tbsp. sugar
Zest of 1 lime
¼ cup olive oil
1 package toasted Marcona almonds
1. In a small bowl, mix the chile powders, salt, and sugar until well combined.
2. In a large mixing bowl, toss the toasted Marcona almonds with olive oil until evenly coated.
3. Sprinkle the seasoning mixture over the almonds and toss until fully coated.
4. Transfer to a serving bowl and top with fresh lime zest.
Spatchcocked
Roasted Chicken with Coriander Honey
Smoked paprika and other chile powders give this simple roasted chicken satisfying bass notes, while the punch of coriander honey makes this a moreish dish. Make the most of the hot oven and cook the roasted root vegetables (see recipe at right) at the same time.
SERVES 4
1 (3-lb.) chicken, spatchcocked
1 Tbsp. kosher salt
1 Tbsp. smoked paprika
1 Tbsp. onion powder
1 Tbsp. garlic powder
1 Tbsp. brown sugar
1 Tbsp. California chile powder
1 Tbsp. ground white pepper
¼ cup toasted coriander seeds, coarsely ground
½ cup honey
1. Prepare the Chicken: Rinse and pat dry the chicken. Lay it breast-side down on a cutting board. Using heavy-duty scissors, cut along both sides of the backbone and remove it. Flip the chicken over and press down on the breasts to flatten.
2. Season the Chicken: Mix the salt, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, brown sugar, chile powder, and white pepper in a bowl. Rub the seasoning evenly over all sides of the chicken, ensuring it gets into every crevice. Refrigerate uncovered for up to 48 hours.
3. Roast the Chicken: Preheat the oven to 360°F (180°C). Place the chicken in a roasting pan and surround it with the prepared yams and potatoes (from the recipe at right). Roast for 1 hour, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
4. Make the Coriander Honey: Combine the honey and coriander seeds in a small saucepan. Heat over low for 30 minutes, then allow the honey to infuse for 20 minutes. Strain out the coriander seeds.
5. Serve: Let the chicken rest for 15 minutes after roasting. Carve the breasts, thighs, and drumsticks, and transfer them to a serving platter. Drizzle with coriander honey and serve with the roasted root vegetables and Kewpie crème fraîche.
Root Vegetables with Kewpie Crème Fraîche
Japanese Kewpie mayo is made with all yolks, thus richer than the standard stuff, and it enriches one of the easiest, tastiest sauces we’ve had in years. Make extra and put it on pretty much everything.
SERVES 4
2 yams, cut into bite-size pieces
12 oz. small potatoes, cut into bite-size pieces
¼ cup olive oil
1 Tbsp. salt
KEWPIE CRÈME FRAÎCHE:
½ cup crème fraîche
¼ cup Kewpie mayonnaise
1 tsp. salt
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
1. Roast the Vegetables: Toss the yams and potatoes in olive oil and salt. Place them in the roasting pan alongside the chicken and roast until tender, about 1 hour.
2. Make the Kewpie Crème Fraîche: In a small bowl, whisk together crème fraîche, Kewpie mayonnaise, salt, and lemon juice.
3. Serve: Arrange the roasted vegetables around the chicken and serve with a side of Kewpie crème fraîche for dipping.
