Buying & selling a car in Spain
B
uying or selling a used car in Spain can be a hazardous business, but if you take care to ensure that all the necessary paperwork is completed to cover yourself against liabilities, things should go smoothly.
Buying a car in Spain
When buying a car you’ll need to ensure sure you have at least one of the following (though, it’s best to have as many as possible with photocopies). • • • •
Permiso de Residencia or Residence Permit (NIE) or passport. Your escrituras, or house deeds, or a rental contract for a minimum of one year. Although it should not be required, it is a good idea to have a Certificado de Empadronamiento or proof of residence in your municipality, available free or for a few cents from the Town Hall. It should not be older than three months. Some car dealers insist on it, and if you don´t have it, everybody wastes time until the dealer checks his facts. If you are financing the car through a dealer you will also need to provide atres nóminas, your three last payslips, or some other proof of income, such as a copy of your work contract.
Buying a car from a private seller involves you and the seller entering into a joint legal relationship and handling all the paperwork yourselves. You and the seller must draw up a Contrato de compraventa (a purchase agreement), and make the transfer of ownership at the Registro de Vehículos (the vehicle registration desk) of the Jefatura de Tráfico (Traffic Department). You both fill in and sign the Solicitud de Transmisión de Vehículos (transfer document), and keep a copy. Make sure that the date and time of the transfer appears on the Contrato so that any traffic fines the seller has left unpaid are not passed on to you. If you are buying a car you must ask the seller for two further documents. The local car tax, impuesto sobre la circulación de vehiculos, should be fully paid up to date (ask to see the vendor’s passport or identity card to check their signature is genuine, and ask for a photocopy for your own security, in case anything goes wrong). The other document you should have is a transferencia. This is obtainable from Trafico and should be completed and signed. Help with all these papers can be given by a competent gestor or by the Real Automovil Club de España (RACE). Be careful to check the legal status of any car you buy. All cars over four years old must be inspected and must pass the inspeccion technical de vehiculos (ITV), equivalent to the MOT test.
If you buy a vehicle from a reputable car dealership, they usually handle all the paperwork on your behalf to complete the ownership transfer. However, they will look to you for payment of Trafico’s transfer tax and fee. The transfer will take a minimum of fifteen days. Trafico charges are approximately 40 Euros plus a tax amount that is 4% of the book value of the vehicle.
Paperwork for buying a car in Spain
Whether you decide to buy from a private seller or a dealer, similar paperwork is involved. You should ask to see the originals of all documents, particularly when dealing with a private seller. • The Permiso de Circulación or Log Book, which is the car´s ID. It shows proof that the chassis number (vehicle identification number) corresponds with the one on the vehicle´s registration document, and provides information on the car, such as the number plate, make, model, name and address of the owner and when it was first registered. • A Transferencia, or transfer of ownership form. • The Inspección Técnica (or ITV) document or MOT, stamped and dated on passing the last inspection and detailing when the next one is due. This proves that the car met the minimum environmental and road safety standards required by law. • The Impuesto Sobre Vehiculos or road license fee for the current financial year, paid in full.
Selling a car in Spain If you are selling a car, you must sign the section on the back of the permiso de circulación which begins ‘Transferido …’. To make sure no problems arise you should also write in the date of the sale. This obliges the new owner to complete the paperwork within 10 days. You can also notify the jefatura provincial de trafico of the sale, to cover yourself in case the buyer omits to change the name on the car’s papers. If the car is still in your name after the sale, the new owner could be running up fines for which you will be liable. You can check this: ask at the jefatura for the form called solicitud de datos del registro de vehiculos (request for vehicle registration details). This will tell you whether or not you are still the car’s registered owner. It is however a legal requirement for the buyer to transfer the vehicle into their name as soon as possible after its purchase.

A limited production model offering more individuality
F
irst showcased as the Vision EfficentDynamics concept at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009, the production ready BMW i8 has gone from strength to strength with over 5,400 units sold in 2015 alone. With its clever hybrid drivetrain, the i8 boasts an output of 362hp and can also cover close to 22 miles in electric only mode. It also takes BMW’s EfficientDynamics philosophy to a new high, posting emissions of just 59g/km and a combined consumption figure of 113mpg in the process. Available for a limited period only, the new special edition BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition puts a new angle on the immediately recognisable BMW i model. The paintwork, created exclusively for this sports car comes in a Protonic Red finish with Frozen Grey metallic accents. On the interior, the special edition i8 comes with high-class red double-stitching and exclusive carbon fibre and ceramic trims. The exterior and interior design of the i8 are heavily influenced by its LifeDrive architecture and pioneering BMW eDrive system, however its reinterpretation of established design features ensures it’s still recognisable as a BMW.
The structure of overlapping and interlocking surfaces also contributes to the unmistakable appearance of the BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition. This layering principle allows aerodynamic forms to be wrapped up in a progressively styled package, while powerfully formed wheel arches draw attention to the wide track of the BMW i8. The dihedral doors open forwards and upwards, adding intrigue to the sports car design of the BMW i8. The BMW i8 was purposefully designed as a plug-in-hybrid sports car offering agile performance, near 50:50 weight distribution and outstanding efficiency. It starts with an exceptionally lightweight and aerodynamically optimised body – including a passenger cell made from CFRP. It includes an advanced BMW eDrive drive system technology, a compact, highly turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and intelligent energy management to all come together to create an overall package that represents a new landmark in the EfficientDynamics development strategy. The original i8 was also the first BMW production model to be powered by a threecylinder petrol engine. This turbocharged unit is equipped with the latest-generation
BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with high-precision injectors positioned between the valves, along with VALVETRONIC. This 1.5-litre engine in the BMW i8 develops 231hp and drives the rear wheels, while a maximum torque of 320Nm is available from 3,700rpm. The car’s second power source is a 96 kW/131hp hybrid synchronous electric motor which sends its power to the front axle. The motor develops 250Nm torque from a standstill. As well as providing a power boost to assist the petrol engine during acceleration, the electric motor can also power the vehicle by itself with a range in everyday driving of up to 22 miles and a top speed of 75mph on electric power alone, drawing its energy from a lithium-ion battery. The highvoltage battery has a liquid cooling system, offers a maximum usable capacity of five kilowatt hours and can be recharged from a conventional household power socket, at a BMW i Wallbox or at a public charging station. The combustion engine and electric motor, battery pack, power electronics, chassis components, and structure and crash functions are arranged together in the aluminium Drive module, while the central element of
the Life module is the 2+2-seater’s CFRP passenger cell. The battery unit is positioned low down in a central position, helping to give the car a low centre of gravity and enhance safety accordingly. Indeed, the centre of gravity of the BMW i8 is less than 460mm from the ground, making it lower than any other current BMW Group model. And this, like the car’s almost exact 50:50 weight distribution, ensures excellent handling properties. Dr. Ian Robertson, BMW AG Board Member for Sales and Marketing said: “The success of the BMW i8 speaks for itself, it is already the world’s most successful hybrid sports car and has comfortably exceeded our own expectations. I can think of no better illustration of the relevance of our young BMW i brand.”

Spain new car market
Total new car registrations in Germany, UK, Italy, France and Spain increased by 6.7% compared with January 2015

he latest analysis from JATO Dynamics points to a positive start to 2016 for Europe’s ‘big 5’ car markets. A total of 759,600 units were registered in January in Germany, UK, Italy, France and Spain, representing average growth of 6.7% compared with January 2015.
Last month Spain’s outstanding results (+11.6%) means it has the fifth largest market in Europe with 77,000 units sold. Whilst this is an increase compared to that of 2015 sales still remain in double digits whilst France, Italy, the UK and Germany all registered much higher sales.

and Rover’s partnership with Virgin Galactic helped Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson unveil Virgin Galactic’s new SpaceShipTwo at a special reveal and naming ceremony at their Mojave Air and Space Port base in California, USA. A Range Rover Autobiography, the pinnacle of premium SUV luxury, took centre stage at the global reveal, towing out the new SpaceShipTwo – officially christened VSS Unity, –in front of the world’s media, special guests and a group of Virgin Galactic’s ‘Future Astronauts.’ Guests at the unveiling ceremony including Virgin Galactic’s stakeholders, VIP guests and Future Astronaut customers, watched on as Sir Richard arrived in the Range Rover and the new SpaceShipTwo made its global debut. The event also marked the special official naming moment of the new SpaceShipTwo, with Stephen Hawking announcing the name VSS Unity via a specially recorded message. Announced in April 2014, the tow-out of VSS Unity by a Range Rover Autobiography marks the latest milestone in the partnership between the two pioneering brands; a partnership based around a strong British heritage and a true spirit of adventure, but under-
pinned by a desire to push the boundaries of technical innovation. A fleet of Land Rover vehicles currently provides valuable support for the Virgin Galactic team at its base in Mojave, and will be an important part of its commercial operations for future astronauts at Spaceport America in New Mexico Stephen Attenborough, Commercial Director at Virgin Galactic said, “Since our partnership began in April 2014, Land Rover has become an integral part of the team’s day to day operating environment in Mojave. Therefore it was fitting that the Range Rover Autobiography took a starring role in today’s events as our new SpaceShipTwo, Unity, made its global debut.
