eorge Timothy Clooney was born on May 6, 1961, in Lexington, Kentucky, into a well-known family of media and entertainment personalities. His father, Nick, spent many years as a television personality and news anchor. His aunt, Rosemary Clooney, had a long career as a singer and actress.

Due to the nature of his father’s work, George Clooney and his older sister, Ada, moved several times to various locations throughout Kentucky and Ohio during their childhood. In 1974, they settled down for good in downtown Augusta, Kentucky, a small town on the Ohio River about an hour south of Cincinnati. There, despite some name recognition, the Clooney’s led a fairly modest life. They were a close-knit family, with Nick Clooney making sure to carve time out of his busy schedule in Cincinnati to be home in the evenings for dinner.

Exposed to the entertainment industry at a young age, Clooney made his first television appearance at 5 years old, playing sketch characters on the local talk shows his dad hosted. In middle school, however, Clooney struggled with his talent for expression when he developed Bell’s palsy, which causes partial facial paralysis thankfully he eventually recovered from the illness.

In school, Clooney was more focused on sports than books, a fairly good baseball player he managed to land a try-out with the Cincinnati Reds at the age of 16, however a baseball contract never materialized.

Graduating from school Clooney opted for college staying close to home, he attended Northern Kentucky University, where he studied broadcast journalism. But Clooney didn’t last long at college.

He didn’t think he had what it took to become a good television journalist, and he hated the constant comparisons to his father. So he dropped out of school in 1981, without a thought as to what he would do next.

Clooney stuck around the Cincinnati area for a while, finding work as a shoe salesman and, later, as a farmhand picking tobacco. He had been harvesting tobacco when he got a call from his cousin, Miguel Ferrer, the son of Rosemary Clooney and Academy Award winner Jose Ferrer. Miguel and his father were making a film in Kentucky about horse racing, and Ferrer offered Clooney a little acting work this experience gave Clooney the acting bug again.

Encouraged by his cousin Miguel, Clooney decided to move to Los Angeles to become an actor when the movie shoot was over. “I had just spent the summer cutting tobacco, which is a miserable job. So that’s what made me move to Hollywood,” Clooney told Esquire. To make ends meet, he picked up whatever work he could find. He even ran errands for his aunt and chauffeured her around town.

Slowly parts came, even if they weren’t the kind of roles he dreamed about. He landed a recurring role on the popular teen comedy ‘The Facts of Life’, from 1985 to 1987. From 1988 to 1991, Clooney also made guest appearances on the dysfunctional family sitcom ‘Roseanne’. In 1992, he starred in the

short-lived series ‘Bodies of Evidence’, playing a detective. On the drama ‘Sisters’, he played another detective and the love interest for Sela Ward’s character. There were small movie roles, too, including the part of a lip-synching transvestite in a 1993 thriller called ‘The Harvest’.

Clooney worked steadily in Hollywood, but he had yet to land a significant career breakthrough which was soon to come.

In 1994, Clooney was cast in a new NBC medical drama called ‘ER’. Clooney played Dr. Doug Ross, a caring paediatrician and a notorious ladies man, in the ensemble drama. Soon after its September 1994 debut, Clooney was on his way to becoming one of the show’s breakout stars, attracting the attention of film industry movers and shakers. His classic good looks and easy-going charm made him a natural for the big screen.

Clooney worked at a hectic pace, managing to appear in several films during his time on ‘ER’. He battled evil vampires with Quentin Tarantino in Robert Rodriguez’s ‘From Dusk to Dawn’ (1996).

In the romantic comedy ‘One Fine Day’ (1996), Clooney played a divorced father who falls for a single mother (Michelle Pfeiffer). Assuming the role of the caped crusader, Clooney starred as Batman in the summer blockbuster ‘Batman & Robin’ (1997), which eventually netted more than $107 million. The following year, Clooney starred opposite Jennifer Lopez in Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Out of Sight’ (1998).

In 1999, Clooney turned in his ER scrubs to pursue his film career full time. He starred in the Persian Gulf War tale ‘Three Kings’ with Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube that same year. Working with the Coen brothers, Clooney starred as a charming conman in ‘O Brother, Where Are Thou?’ (2000), an imaginative retelling of the epic poem The Odyssey, which led to him accepting a Golden Globe Award for his work on the film. Clooney also reteamed with Wahlberg for the popular disaster-at-sea film ‘The Perfect Storm’, based on Sebastian Junger’s bestselling novel.

In 2001, Clooney put his good looks & charming persona to great use starring in the remake of ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ directed by Steven Soderbergh.

He played Danny Ocean, a role originated by famed crooner Frank Sinatra. The comedic heist film featured an all-star cast, which included Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Bernie Mac, and Matt Damon. It proved to be such a successful venture on- and off-screen that it spawned two sequels, ‘Ocean’s Twelve’ and ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’.

The following year, Clooney made his directorial debut with ‘Confessions of a Dangerous Mind’ (2002). The biopic focused on the life of Chuck Barris, host of The Gong Show and reportedly a CIA agent. Despite the film’s poor box office performance and weak reviews, Clooney continued to work behind the scenes, serving as a producer on the 2004 political drama ‘Syriana’, for his role the usually fit Clooney gained roughly 30 pounds to play a government agent in the film, which explored political intrigue and corruption in the Middle East. Badly hurt during the filming of a scene, he damaged the membrane around his spine.

The injury caused spinal fluid to leak from his nose and left him with terrible back pain. After completing the film, Clooney underwent two surgeries to fix the problem. All of his hard work on ‘Syriana’ did not go unnoticed. In 2005, Clooney won the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in the film.

He was also nominated for another important project, ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’, that same year. The film examines the clash between distinguished news anchor Edward R. Murrow and Senator Joseph McCarthy. Clooney directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay, which served partly as a tribute to his newsman father. Widely praised, the black-and-white drama helped Clooney earn his first nominations, for best director and best original screenplay).

Clooney continues to excel both in front of and behind the camera. His performance in the 2009 dramatic comedy, ‘Up in the Air’, earned the star raves. In the film, Clooney played Ryan Bingham, a consultant who specializes in firing employees. His 2011’s ‘The Ides of March’, proved Clooney to be a triple-threat, serving as the project’s star, director, and co-writer.

The political drama featured Clooney as a presidential candidate and Ryan Gosling as one of his aides.

Also that same year, Clooney gave another impressive performance in the family drama ‘The Descendants’ directed by Alexander Payne. He won a Golden Globe for his turn as a husband and father who must cope with new challenges and unpleasant revelations after his wife is severely injured in a boating accident.

Often the target of paparazzi, both in the United States and at his vacation home in Italy, Clooney’s career has been a balancing act between maintaining his privacy and his Hollywood status. Still, the world never seems to tire of Clooney news, particularly when it comes to his romantic life. Clooney has been married once, to American actress Talia Balsam. That union was short lived, and Clooney has vowed that he will never marry again or have children. The pledge managed to catch the attention of actresses Nicole Kidman and Michelle Pfeiffer, who both stated that they believed Clooney would be a father before he turned 40, and even placed bets on it. Both actresses lost their bets, and both sent Clooney checks to pay up. The actor, who’s twice been named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” and has been called “The Last Movie Star” by TIME magazine, returned the money to his friends.

In 2011, Clooney began dating American actress Stacy Keibler, who was formerly involved with 7th Heaven actor Geoff Stults. After nearly two years together, in July 2013, it was reported that Clooney and Keibler had parted ways creating hope once again for the legion of fans dreaming of bagging the world’s most eligible bachelor!

When it’s a Citroën DS3 Cabrio.

Citroën’s new DS3 Cabrio is squarely aimed at the chic droptop city car crowd, who’ve only had the Mini Convertible and Fiat 500C to woo them up until now. But does this French contender have that touch of je ne sais quoi?

I

s the Citroën DS3 Cabrio radically different to a hardtop DS3?

Like the Fiat 500C, the DS3 Cabrio retains its roof pillars and rails, giving it an identical profile to the hardtop car (keeping the cool ‘shark-fin’ B-pillar) plus decent stiffness and roll-over safety. To call the rollback roof a glorified sunroof would be harsh, but the DS3 Cabrio isn’t a true convertible in the same vein as a Mini drop-top.

The roof itself takes 16 seconds to retract fully, and can handily do so at speeds of up to 75mph – handy in the run up to winter! Like the Fiat 500C, the fully-retracted hood concertinas like a busker’s accordion over the bootlid, blocking all rear visibility.

To compensate for the blindspot, rear parking sensors are standard, while the big door mirrors offer a decent view rearward.

The funky cabin is carried over wholesale from the hardtop DS3, and makes a refreshing change from the familiar retro-pastiche choices. It’s colourful and well-trimmed (leather seats and steering wheel are standard on the DSport), though the driving position is straight from the long-arm/short-leg catalogue. The only other changes for the DS3 Cabrio are intricately detailed rear light clusters, and a chrome strip across the rear that acts a boot handle.

Citroën claims the weight has increased by 24kg, thanks to some rear-mounted ballast to improve balance, and rear bulkhead stiffening. Making short work of the extra heft in our test car was the familiar 1.6-litre THP 155 engine that also sees duty in the Mini Cooper S and Peugeot RCZ. The turbocharged motor puts out 154bhp, 177lb ft and returns a claimed 47.9mpg.

What's life like al fresco in the Citroën DS3?

With the roof down and the integrated winddeflector/bug and spray-catcher raised, the DS3 Cabrio will handle anything up to motorway speeds without too much wind roar or a cabin maelstrom.

It’s happiest cruising at town speeds though, with the turbocharged engine whooshing in the middle distance. Drop the side windows too and the seatbelts flap loudly at anything more that urban pootling speeds.

How does the Citroën DS3 Cabrio drive?

The engine actually suits a cabrio’s character quite well: its characterless but linear power delivery and rich torque reserves mean it’s happy to lope along on the boost in taller gears, making relaxed progress. That’s just as well – the ratios are intergalactic. Third will take you from just over 20mph to around 90mph, on the way to a top speed of 132mph. Spirited driving in our test car (still a little tight, with only 150 miles under its cambelt) returned economy in the mid-30s.

Dynamically, the DS3 doesn’t quite have the go-kart reflexes of a Mini. Its steering is light but numb, the brakes slightly over-eager at the top of the pedal’s travel, and the gearchange a little rubbery, though much better than the rest of the crop of French superminis – take note, Clio and 208. The ride is firm but well-damped, and even on the attractive 17in rims of our DSport test model, perfectly acceptable on UK roads. Overall, the DS3 is a better drive than the Peugeot 208 or Fiat 500, but not quite a credible warm hatch.

If you want a truly hot version, you’ll have to beg Citroën to slot the DS3 Racing’s 203bhp hardware into the Cabrio bodystyle…

Storage Although the DS3 Cabrio seats five (its rivals offer space for four in principle, but are really 2+2s), the Citroën’s practicality is let down by the boot. At 245 litres, it’s only 40 litres smaller than the fixedhead car, but access is laughably compromised.

The bootlid rises rather gracefully to sit flush with the rear quarter, revealing a letterbox-like aperture at waist-height. It’s the only real black mark on the DS3’s usability that’s resulted from its scalping – visibility is barely any worse than the hardtop DS3.

you want to reflect on the way that fashion shows seem like a world of the weird to the rest of the universe, a Dsquared² show isn’t a bad place to start. Dean and Dan Caten blow a perfect fashion bubble, an immaculately detailed re-creation of whatever temporal fancy has gripped them for the season.

That’s because they are consummate Ziegfeld-scaled showfolk, geniuses at realizing every single detail of their fever dream. This collection was all about an ideal tiki lounge, staffed with the kind of gorgeous showgirl talent, which Sinatra and Co. would dip their wicks with the chauvinist entitlement of Vegas gods.

So defining, in fact, that you could only wonder at the milieu in which the Catens move. How often do designers declare that they’re dressing their girlfriends? Dean and Dan must surely hang with the cocktail-swining set, poolside-lounging posse.

Their women were all curves, lampshade hats and cat-eye glasses, indolent, kept. It was kind of sensational.

And, when the Catens took on clothes that might have a life outside a Rat Pack orgy, it hinted at Ginger in Casino.

Blast from the Past

l

iving in uncertain times makes people nostalgic for the things of childhood. The more hectic life becomes, the more people begin to long for a simpler time with fewer responsibilities and less stress.

Food is often an integral part of this longing as smells, colours and tastes all serve to bring back happy memories.

Comfort foods such as old fashioned sweets make people feel good by allowing them to put aside the cares of the day and enjoy a moment of indulgence to reminisce of a care-free bygone time when you could go to the school tuck shop with 10p and buy a mixture of Mojos, Fruit Salad, Black Jacks, chocolate mice, flying saucers and cola cubes.

So what happened to the tuck shop grub that time forgot? For many of us, a trip to the sweet shop

was the first time we’d make a purchase with our own money.

Many of the names familiar today Rolo, KitKat, Quality Street, Mars Bars, Fruit Gums were all invented in the late Thirties.

Then in the Seventies a new generation was being catered to with tongue-tingling Space Dust, giantbubble-blowing Hubba Bubba, Sherbet fountains, chewy Texan bars, and frothy Creamola Foam, but sadly, with the rise of the multi-national food corporations came an era of ‘brand uniformity’.
